Privilege Series 5

privilege-series5-4

Description

The Privilege Series 5, which has been rebranded the 510, is a luxury long distance cruiser that has made a name for itself thanks to its quality build and finish. These boats are a real step up from other cruising catamarans which is why we have included them in our Luxury Catamarans sections. There is an associated jump in price of course.

This boat has been well thought out with wide, easy-to-navigate side decks and plenty of hand holds. and you can tell very quickly that she was designed for long passages. The helm, engine controls, instruments and electric sheet winches are all around the raised helm station that should make her easy to sail with a short-handed crew. Visibility is good all around from the elevated helm position on the port side.

The hulls, deck, cabin top and bimini are foam-cored and resin-infused, and to reduce weight, furniture and bulkheads are made with foam-cored maple laminates. The quality of the joinery finish is a real step up from less expensive boats, as you would expect.

The Privilège Series 5 has rounded hulls, with chines above the waterline for decent living space down below and buoyancy at sea. She feels like a very solid boat under power or motor and is very quiet below. On a reach, you should comfortable hit 9 or 10 knots in a decent breeze.

There’s a full main and genoa, and an inner stay-sail, also with a furler, plus options on light wind and down wind sails off the bowsprit. The new angular lines of the updated Marc Lombard design look like they will cut through a sea- she’s an impressive looking catamaran.

Cruising speed under power is around 8 knots

It’s probably the interiors that Privilege are so well known for and it was Franck Darnet who had his hand in designing this one. These are semi-custom boats so owners have a great deal of input into the configuration of individual boats. The signature feature is the huge master stateroom in the nacelle forward- it’s probably the biggest owners cabin in its class and many lead onto a big ensuite bathroom in the starboard hull (I can’t quite call it a head).

Privilege was started in the 80s by Philippe Jeantot, and launched as a safe family cruising and offshore catamaran. The Privilège Serie 5 ticks all of these boxes. If you are looking for a solid, safe long distance cruiser with the space and ability to soak up all of the toys, then the Privilege Series 5 is your boat.

Gemini 105Mc

This is the third version of an already thoughtful design that tony smith has been tweaking for years. it's a spacious, stable platform for a fast-cruising couple..

05 catamaran

Tony Smith’s most recent design is the third iteration of a 34-foot catamaran that his company, Performance Cruising, Inc., of Annapolis, first introduced to the American market in the 1990s. The result of Smith’s continued tinkering, the 105Mc, is, he says faster than the original. Since this is our first review of the Gemini cat in any version, we can’t compare. But we can report that this boat is fast for a cruising catamaran. It’s also evidence that when a builder is willing to incorporate new and sometimes expensive ideas in design development, the results can be worth the investment.

Company History Tony Smith is a British expatriate who, with wife Susan, formed Performance Cruising in 1980. Following graduation from the University of East Anglia with a degree in engineering, he studied the mechanics of boat performance while participating in singlehanded races, including the first 2,100-mile Round Britain race, in which he finished fourth.

He began his boatbuilding career by constructing a 24-foot Piver trimaran in a shed in England. Then, in 1969, he developed a method of integrating foam coring with fiberglass, and produced the Telstar, a 26-foot, folding trimaran. During a 10-year run, 300 of the boats were sold worldwide. Along the way, he also was involved in the construction of 30- to 70-foot custom yachts.

Eventually emigrating to the US, he introduced the Telstar to the US market. Following the loss of the molds in a fire in 1981, he re-emerged on the scene with the design for a new catamaran, appropriately called the Phoenix, the first Gemini.

Gemini 105Mc

In 1993, the company launched the Gemini 3400, the first catamaran with a lifting underhung rudder system. It was eventually modified and reintroduced as the 105M, and the 105Mc is the most recent upgrade.

With 800 boats on the water, the company claims to be the best-selling catamaran manufacturer in the US. In 2002 the company’s 20 employees built and sold 54 boats, valued at $8 million, in a 16,000-square-foot factory. An additional 25,000 square feet of production space are currently under construction.

Six dealers are located in Florida, Maryland, California and Washington. Though the company also sells directly to customers, there’s no price advantage, and a connection to a local dealer would be an advantage if warranty issues arise.

A prototype for a new Telstar trimaran is undergoing sea trials, and can be seen on the Performance Cruising website.

Appearance/Design Smith’s perspective on sailing and yacht design fits the definition of a multihull advocate. From his standpoint, sailing is about speed, comfort, and stability.

From an aesthetic standpoint, comparisons of a 35-foot catamaran to a cruising monohull are usually akin to comparing a coupe to a delivery van. Though both may be designed to accomplish the same purposes, the execution varies greatly. Many cruising multihulls present a slab-sided appearance, and boxlike profiles with cabins extending high above deck level.

The 105Mc does not. When viewed from the quarter, the Mc has a relatively sporty appearance, even with the addition of a cockpit canopy that raises the boat’s profile. Viewed on the centerline, there’s no question she’s a cat, though the unsightly strakes of the 3400 version have been eliminated.

Smith says Gemini catamarans are designed for “serious ocean cruising,” adding that “a 23-day passage with son Neil across the North Atlantic opened my eyes to her capabilities.”

During the passage, he says, the pair encountered 45-knot winds and 35-foot waves, but never felt they were in harm’s way, and were comfortably ensconced in the cockpit wearing layers of fleece.

As most readers know, voyaging in multihulls offshore demands some different sailing techniques and priorities than sailing ballasted monohulls. The high initial stability of a multihull works both ways: the boat will mightily resist capsizing, but if it does go over and invert, it will be virtually impossible to right again without the assistance of a large ship with a cargo crane. Assuming the essential integrity of the hulls, the platform will be stable, and the crew will live in an inverted world pending rescue. However, very few owners of cruising multihulls have the occasion to take their boats into conditions that seriously challenge their initial stability, and (North Atlantic deliveries by designers notwithstanding) this Mc will usually be sailed in coastal or near-coastal waters.

The Mc has the same basic dimensions as the 3400. Note that the weights published in the company’s sales literature and on its website are at odds with each other. Dimensions in this article are accurate, Smith says: “The 105M and the Mc are the same weight—9,600 pounds. We realized after our trans-Atlantic trip that the weights we had given for the 105M were too low. We finally bought a pair of scales!

“The mast on the Mc is a foot taller than the 105M, and has a 1′ crane.” The mainsail now carries a large roach and full battens, increasing mainsail area from 260 to 340 square feet, a hefty jump. The 150% genoa carries 350 square feet.

A new option is a flat-cut overlapping genoa known in the multihull world as a “screecher.” This 490-square-foot sail produces spinnaker performance without adding a pole and guys.

The furling drum for the screecher tack can move athwartships on a curved track that is mounted at the prows of both hulls and across the bowsprit/anchor platform, forward of where the anchor is dropped through. This movable tack allows more flexibility with sheeting angles, especially when attempting to work to weather.

The cut of the sail allows it to be sailed to within 50 degrees of the apparent wind, and the tack arrangement doesn’t get in the way of the ground tackle.

Smith describes the hull shapes, introduced in 1995 on the 105M model, as “revolutionary in the multihull industry.” They have a 9:1 length to width ratio.

“They closely resemble a racing monohull,” Smith says. “They are shallow and fat, with a teardrop shape to produce more speed and increase load-carrying capacity. Compared to the 3400, narrower shapes allow hulls to be moved outward to produce stability without increasing beam.”

The foredeck has 39″ of clearance at the bow. (Note that the builders refer to the deck area forward of the cabin as the “bridge deck,” but we’ll use “foredeck” as we don’t want to confuse it with the bit of decking often found between the cockpit and the companionway.)

Asymmetric centerboards were designed to reduce turbulent drag and increase lift. Constructed of a combination of fiberglass mat and Kevlar surrounding closed cell foam, they pivot upward to allow shallow-water anchoring. Located in cavities on the hulls, they are raised from inside the main saloon, a convenient arrangement that does not interfere with galley or navigational chores. Smith says the combination of hull and centerboard redesigns produced a boat requiring “25% less energy to push it the same speed.”

The cockpit sole has been lowered slightly to increase headroom to 6′ 7″. However, the modification does not impair the helmsman’s view forward through a large Lexan window that spans the deck. The wheel was moved outboard, allowing the helmsman to steer from the rail. Mainsail controls are now located on a thicker transom that provides more comfortable seating for crew, and the stern has been modified to allow access from swim ladders.

Smith’s personality is that of a consummate tinkerer. However, unlike industry giants, he enjoys the luxury of being able to continually focus his attention on one product with an eye toward evolutionary improvements.

Deck One early impression while sailing this boat is that the cockpit doesn’t resemble a spaghetti factory, though the boat is as well-equipped with name-brand equipment as a similar-sized monohull.

Halyards are led to winches on the mast rather than sheetstoppers on the cabintop because, Smith says, “you’re operating on a stable platform, even in a blow,” so moving forward is not as treacherous.

The mast carries straight double spreaders and is stepped on deck atop the main bulkhead. The headstay is opposed by a split backstay with tensioner. Halyards are internal. Shrouds are dead-ended on chainplates at the main bulkhead. The chainplates are bolted through steel strapping bonded into the foredeck area.

The mast is rigged with permanent checkstays angled 20 degrees aft. These are supported through the deck by a stainless steel rod married to a steel plate mounted horizontally in the hull. The powerful sailplan is well supported.

As is true on most catamarans, movement forward is relatively effortless. The combination of 14″ wide steps, a handhold on the canopy, a stainless steel handrail recessed in the cabintop, and 10″ wide decks, allowed us to move forward safely in blustery conditions we encountered on a test sail.

Gemini 105Mc

The large sundeck and plastic seats attached to the forward rail provide passengers comfortable lounging spaces forward of the mast when underway. Unlike a lightweight monohull, the cat’s performance is relatively unaffected by weight on the foredeck. Storage compartments are located in each hull.

The helmsman steers seated on a 27″ wide x 16″ deep seat that affords unrestricted views forward. We sailed with three passengers under the canopy without interfering with the skipper. Though the saloon may be enclosed in stinky weather, clear windows on the top half of the cockpit bulkhead slide open to allow the driver to commiserate with passengers.

The mainsheet is attached to the end of the boom and a section of track mounted on the stern rail that affords excellent sail control. However, the task becomes difficult when the cockpit is enclosed by a clear vinyl cover.

Lockers for storage of propane tanks and an optional generator are also located in the cockpit.

Belowdecks Step over an 11″ doorframe into the saloon and there’s no comparing the open spaces of the Mc’s 14-foot beam to the view along the saloon of a typical 34-foot monohull. That impression is augmented by a portlight array that provides 360-degree visibility, and four Bowmar hatches that allow light and air to flow in from overhead.

Fiberglass surfaces are light and shiny, and veneers nicely finished. The fit of most cabinetry is above average.

The centerpiece of the saloon is a C -shaped dining area surrounded by cushions that, with the table removed, serves as a conversation pit. When lowered, the table converts to a double berth.

The space to port, amidships along the hull, is dedicated to the navigator. The master stateroom is forward amidships and to starboard, with the bunk set at a slight angle. The head is forward to port. There’s an elongated galley on the starboard side, matched by a navigator’s station along the port side, and twin staterooms aft.

The boat has enough bunks for 6-8 adults, but Smith rightly calls it “a couple’s boat.” This is a refreshing contrast to builders who overstate the livability of their products.

In addition to its spaciousness, the minimum headroom, even in the head, is more than 6′, so most passengers will be able to stand upright.

Though the interior is not dramatically different than typical production boats, several touches contribute to a favorable impression. The dining table is solid teak. Leaves increase the surface of the table to feed 6-8 adults, and it rotates 90 degrees to fit the crowd.

Part of the navigator’s 89″ long work surface is elevated and shaped so a chart kit fits securely.

Aft staterooms have a 28″ x 28″ area in which to change clothes without banging the hull. Both have double berths and opening ports. Propane sensors and fume detectors are standard equipment in the staterooms, as are audible alarms.

The size of the galley on the Mc was increased by locating countertops on the inboard and outboard sides of the passageway, and the addition of drawers and cabinets. Similarly, room for a built-in microwave was added. The space is filled with a Voyager 2000 two-burner stove with oven and broiler, and two-section stainless steel sink. A solar vent is located overhead. The four-cubic-foot refrigerator is a Dometic American.

Skipper’s quarters are filled with light by a port spanning the hulls that presents views through black Lexan. The queen-sized berth sits on an island with nothing below it but water. Storage is forward in the hull, and in bins to starboard. The aft bulkhead of the compartment is enclosed by smoked glass that slides out of the way to provide a view corridor for the helmsman.

The head compartment on the Mc is big, bright, and well-ventilated. A good touch is a siphon arrangement that allows fresh water to be pumped through the toilet after every use, helping to eliminate odors.

Throughout the catamaran, spaces are well-organized and proportioned, so crews will rest, eat, and sleep in comfort. The skipper’s quarters are large enough to help compensate for the monthly mortgage payment and slip fees.

Construction The Gemini plant is a model of efficiency, with no wasted space, as we learned during an afternoon tour. Boats typically require 5-7 days to proceed past six stations to a forklift waiting to launch them into a creek behind the facility.

Hulls, decks, and interior liners that provide reinforcement of the structure and a base for furniture are solid fiberglass. Liners are glassed and tabbed into the hull prior to installation of the deck.

The lamination schedule calls for vinylester resins bonding a barrier coat of 1.5-oz mat followed by two layers of 18 x 15 Cofab mat. The only coring is 1/2″ end-grain balsa across the foredeck and cabintop, and in cockpit areas in which there are no deck fittings.

The hull-deck joint is a shoebox design bonded with something Smith calls “black poly putty,” produced by Cook’s. Most builders prefer 3M5200 but Smith has used the putty for 20 years because “it has an 8- hour setup time that allows workers to be more precise in the placement of the two sections. It makes a phenomenal bond that is not brittle because it is chemically cured, a better alternative than air-cured products.”

Once installed, the deck is secured with stainless steel fasteners on 5″ centers and the joint is covered by a gunwale guard.

Following his trans-Atlantic trip, Smith decided that the boat needed to undergo a weight loss program. When constructed, most boats are heavier than designed, and the Mc was no exception. Smith estimates the boat was 1,000 pounds too heavy.

“It was not a matter of speed, but of comfort,” he said. “I felt that by reducing the boat’s weight I could increase its buoyancy and produce a more comfortable ride.”

To that end, he replaced drawers in the forward stateroom with bins, substituted 1/2″ plywood for 3/4″ in some areas, and lightened the lamination in some nonload-bearing areas.

The boat’s Achilles heel could be the solving of wiring or plumbing problems, should they occur. Wiring looms are attached to the liner prior to the installation of the liner to the hull, and are virtually inaccessible. Of the arrangement, Smith says “our looms are foolproof. Remember, we’ve been doing this for 20 years and the process is evolutionary, not revolutionary.” Spare hoses are installed during construction to ease retrofitting appliances, and 12-volt wires are run through PVC to avoid heat and chafe. Wires exit the mast into the forward stateroom, and can be accessed in a panel between the deck and liner. Still, we wouldn’t want to perform subcutaneous surgery on this boat.

Performance We sailed the 105Mc on the day after the Annapolis Boat Show ended, when multihull manufacturers congregate to offer rides to interested sailors. A northeaster arrived that morning, bringing winds that built to 25-35 knots and produced a 3-4 foot chop. We were the only multi hull on the water.

Gemini 105Mc

With the wind abeam when we slipped dock lines, once we were underway she motored well despite her windage. On the bay, the boat sailed with little heel, and fast, under a reefed mainsail and a flat, 90% jib. Nearby, the three-person crew aboard a 30-foot monohull struggled to keep their boat on her feet.

Sailing closed-hauled, speed fluctuated between 6.5 and 7 knots. The short chop produced a bumpy ride and water over the bow, but we stayed on course with very little leeway. When we cracked off, speed fluctuated between 7 and 12 knots in wind speeds ranging from 17 to 25 knots. She was easy to steer, and responsive when we made sudden maneuvers to avoid crab pots.

The canopy protects crew from the elements, but may provide a false sense of security, as we learned when we moved forward from its protection and stepped into a chilly breeze and seaspray. Handrails are well located, and the nonskid was effective on the wet deck.

The boat is propelled under power by a single Westerbeke diesel, using an outdrive leg than can be lifted clear of the water. The current standard engine is 27-hp, up from the 20-hp engine previously installed.

Conclusions This third generation of Gemini cat is an improvement over her predecessors. She sails as well to windward as can be expected of a cruising catamaran (better than many) and shows good speed and stability off the wind. She’s easy to operate, and well-built. Spaces belowdecks are comfortable and larger than those on similar-sized monohulls, though the lack of a second head will be an inconvenience for skippers overnighting with large crews. With the 27-hp engine, a 150% genoa and furler, and electronics, the tab for the 105Mc is $129,500. Add a screecher for another $5,400.

Where is the production site, and can a tour of the facility be arranged?

The boat is no longer in production. Tony retired and sold the company. I think during the 2005 market crash everything fell apart. The outdrive and engine aren’t made anymore. The new owners redesigned the boat and ruined the original idea. They tried to design a boat for the single handed rental market in the Caribbean with a deeper draft and fixed keels. It didn’t sell well.

Catamaran spinning circles

The popularity of the multihull (aka catamaran or cat) fishing boats has never been greater, as more and more boatbuilders enter this growing segment of the market. The inherent stability of the catamaran design rolls less with the seas, making fishing offshore less tiresome and more comfortable. Available from 20 to 48 feet, catamarans typically offer a large fishing platform with generous storage and fishing amenities. They are available in a wide variety of deck layouts, including center-consoles, dual-consoles, and even pilothouse and express variants.

Catamaran foredeck

Big Picture

The large deck area of a catamaran enables many large underdeck storage lockers and insulated fish boxes in the sponsons. This gives anglers ample room for gear and the day’s catch. The catamaran’s stability, fishability, and smooth ride in rough seas make it attractive to anglers as well as day-cruisers. A center-console version adds 360 degrees of angler access to the rail. With the dual-console design, generous seating behind a beam-to-beam windshield makes for a great family fishing-friendly setup.

Live bait is one of the most popular types of fishing in virtually every coastal zone. To do it successfully requires optimal water capacity and proper flow. The minimum size of the outflow water plumbing should be twice the size of the inflow. The plumbing should have a drain at the bottom to shed scales at the end of the day, as well as a drain at the top of the well to adjust capacity and allow overflow. Above-deck transom-mounted wells should fully flood to the lids when running to keep baits from getting beat up.

Tip: A sump box with multiple pumps in case a pump fails is the best setup for first-rate livewells. Conveniently located inflow and outflow valves make it easy to optimize the flow without tiring your bait from swimming too much in the well.

Catamaran helm

Rod Storage

Having enough rod holders is essential to be successful for opportunity fishing. Look for vertical rod storage along the console and across the back of the T-top. Many models also have rod holders along the outboard transom wall. Having plenty of gunwale rod holders for drift- and kite-fishing is helpful.

Tip: Placing adjustable swivel rod holders by Gemlux makes deep-dropping, lure-fishing and drifting even easier because they allow your rods to face the direction the baits are fishing, yet they can be swiveled back to keep rods from sticking out of the boat while running and docking.

Manufacturers often offer multiple choices for horsepower, but whatever the choice, the engines must come in pairs. For example, you might order twin outboards (one for each sponson) or four outboards (two for each sponson), but single- or triple-outboard configurations are not common on a cat. Optimal selection should be made based on user load, weight of the boat, ride comfort , performance desires, and best case for resale. It’s a rare day when you can run wide open, but having more horsepower gives better torque at slower speeds and thus better control. Running larger engines slower gives better fuel efficiency too.

Tip: When possible, choose the highest horsepower offered because it typically leads to a better resale value with a shorter sales cycle.

Power steering from engine manufacturer Optimus or SeaStar is essential with the higher horsepower required for larger boats, and it makes installing and operating the upper station in a tower far more practical and comfortable.

With the power demands of electronics, livewell pumps, stereo amps and more, it is wise to have at least two house batteries, and for larger boats, a third or fourth with a multibank charger for dockside. Each engine should have its own dedicated battery as well.

Electronics

Typically choosing the largest screen or multiple screens that will fit on the console is best-case scenario for ease of use, ergonomics, and visibility. VHF radios, stereo controller, and equipment switches for lighting, pumps, and accessories should all be integrated with greatest visibility and ease of operator reach.

A Tale of Two Hulls

A catamaran rides on pair of hulls, or sponsons, each thinner and sharper than  that of a similarly sized monohull boat. The narrow sponsons of the cat tend to slice easily through water to deliver a smooth ride, even in rough seas. At the same time, with the sponsons positioned out to the sides of the boat, cats tend to roll less, thus providing great stability to enhance crew comfort, security and safety. However, cats tend to corner more flatly than a monohull, and some hulls (but not all) tend to lean outward versus inward during a turn.

Catamaran running

Experts Say

Newer designs such as Invincible’s Morelli and Melvin-designed semi-asymmetrical sponsons eliminate some of the negatives of the cat design, such as “sneezing,” where water sprays out the front of the boat when hitting a wave. They’ve also controlled the uncomfortable “outboard lean” sensation common in older designs when in a turn. Once transitioned to a catamaran, many become true believers and preach the benefits of the design.

Editor Says: Saltwater fishing cats not only offer superb stability and smooth ride, but some also display exceptional speed and range. I recall one trip out of Key West, Florida, aboard an Invincible 40 Cat with four 350 hp outboards to the Dry Tortugas. It was a 60-mile run, and we made it there in 70 minutes. We caught more fish than our arms could bear, and then dashed back to Key West, arriving in time for cocktail hour on the same day. -Jim Hendricks, Staff Editor, Boating and Fishing Group

IPS engines, fitted on some Fountaine Pajot motor catamarans are designed to offer greater energy efficiency, which translates into better fuel economy compared to other systems of propulsion. The overall design of IPS engines aims to optimise a boat’s performance in terms of speed , manoeuvrability and fuel economy. And of course, IPS engines offer excellent manoeuvrability thanks to steerable propellors, thus facilitating manœuvres in tight spaces like harbours.

Spacious and comfortable when sailing, Fountaine Pajot motor yachts also offer fine cruising speed. Depending on the model and the engine installed on board, they can reach a max speed of 24 knots and 18 knots in fast cruising mode.

Power catamarans are naturally more efficient than monohull power boats . Depending on the model and the engine installed on board, at a high cruising speed, i.e. around 18 knots, motor yachts in the Fountaine Pajot range can reach between 260 and 425 nautical miles. At an “economical” cruising speed, they can reach up to 1000 nautical miles. The Power 67, the Flagship model in the range, can reach up to 4000 nautical miles at economy cruise speed. Take a look at the boat comparator here

Thanks to its architecture with two floats and a central suspended platform, its mass is divided by two and better spread. Thinner hulls decrease the Archimedes thrust and require much less energy to move the keel through the water. Half the consumption of a monocoque is the result, increasing the range of motor catamarans for long crossings and long stays at anchor. For the same length, a catamaran gives much more living surface . The great width permits much more spacious cockpit space as well as a huge interior-exterior living space on one level,

Innovative, high-tech composite materials constitute most of the structure of our motor catamarans : hulls, flybridge, decks, bulkheads and more. Fountaine Pajot has perfected a resin injection and infusion technique, an advanced technology that gives our boats all their robustness. Thanks to this expertise, we can make our motor yachts considerably lighter while maintaining consistent quality . Injection also makes it possible to meet the most stringent environmental requirements, in line with the commitments of the Fountaine Pajot Group.

Choosing The Right Boat for Your Sailing Charter

By: Zeke Quezada, ASA Charter , Cruising Tips

You’ll ask yourself if you need a watermaker or if air conditioning is important or even if you want a full-sized refrigerator onboard the boat you are going to charter. The truth is when you decide to take a sailing vacation aboard a sailing vessel that you will call home for a week or two you’ll be surprised by just how much you think you need.

Choosing the right boat for your sailing charter can be simple as you really only need to think about four basic questions :

  • How many people?
  • How big of a boat?
  • What type of boat?
  • How much do you want to spend?

Who Are You Taking on Your Sailing Charter Vacation?

If you decide to take a quaint sailing vacation with just you and your significant other you might find that a small monohull is more than adequate for your sailing vacation. If your crew consists of children, mother-in-laws and sailing newbies you may want to consider a large catamaran that boasts space enough for everyone’s needs and personalities.

When you are taking more than your immediate family ask questions about the number of berths and the number of heads. Also, is your group the type that will need more or less privacy? Will kids share a berth or sleep the saloon?

Spending a week on the boat? The need for space and privacy will be magnified if the group does not normally live in the same household.

Size of Boat The bigger the boat the more hands you will need to be active crew. Even though charter boats have all the required bells and whistles that make sailing easier, if a boat is much larger there will be a need for more experienced and willing crew members. You can expect most boats over 36 feet to have twin steering stations that allow for easy passage from the cockpit to a swim platform carved into the transom. Most handling will be done from the cockpit.

If this is your first charter consider a smaller boat and fewer people so that you have less crew with which to deal.

There are a few things to remember when dealing with the size of a boat. A larger and therefore heavier boat requires more skill to maneuver and takes practice. The crew will be required to work with larger anchors and dock lines and that requires more muscle power.

05 catamaran

Type of Boat The choice is between a monohull and a catamaran. Simply put it is between the roomier accommodations and increased privacy of a catamaran and the generally smaller layout of a monohull. Two boats of the same length will vary significantly on the beam and will sail vastly differently.

Does your crew enjoy the feeling of heeling and cutting through the swells or is the condominium on the water what your group is going for? With two boats of the same 43-foot length a catamaran will provide more generous living space – with four cabins, each with its own head – than a monohull. However, it is also a bigger boat to maneuver under power and sail.

Cost Cost is a factor in how you choose your boat for a sailing vacation. Catamarans on average will be more expensive relative to your sailing location. Size, quality, features, and amenities all play a role, as do location and season. Establish upfront how your group will share the charter and incidental expenses.

Remember: If a deal is too good to be true…it probably is. Don’t risk your vacation on a cheap charter.

  • Charter Resources
  • Your First Charter Sailing Vacation Today bareboat chartering is the culmination of your sailing education. When you walk across the deck and get your sailing diploma you step on to the metaphorical boat of your future and you can sail it anywhere you want!
  • Charter Sailboat Resources Whether you have just begun to sail and have recently earned your ASA 101 certification or if you have already mastered ASA 114 and are a veteran of bareboat charters this resource should help you.
  • Bareboat Charter in the BVI Getting aboard your bareboat charter is the goal when you get your ASA sailing certifications. Where do you begin? For many, it is a sailing vacation in the British Virgin Islands.
  • Choosing a Charter Boat Company It’s time for you to set off on your own and explore endless shorelines and secluded coves. You have mapped out your plan and you have reserved your vacation time now all you need is a boat. How do you choose a charter company to rent a boat for a week?
  • Choosing The Right Boat for Your Sailing Charter When you decide to take a sailing vacation aboard a sailing vessel that you will call home for a week or two you’ll be surprised by just how much you think you need.
  • Sailing in Europe? Chartering overseas is on the bucket list of many a sailor, but making it happen comes with a stipulation or two. A sizable number of countries require an International Proficiency Certificate that lets them know the charterer is trained, qualified and prepared to take one of their boats out to sea.

Multihull of the year

15 of our favorite 35 to 45-foot catamarans

Rather well-canvassed and above all quite light, this catamaran is reputed to sail well.

Curvy and convivial, the saloon is adjacent to a functional galley.

Fast for its size, the 381 is also pleasant to sail. Top speeds of 20 knots are on the cards!

The nacelle’s low volume and the narrow hulls lend themselves more to a small crew.

The 380 takes up the broad outline of the 410, which came out three years earlier…but offers engines accessible via rear lockers rather than under the berths.

The nacelle and its large vertical portlights offer an uninterrupted view and excellent protection from the sun.

Certain owners report top speeds of over 18 knots. Seawinds are fast!

The nacelle is occupied by the saloon alone; as a result, there is no lack of space at aperitif time!

An unusual silhouette, especially head on… But the marked longitudinal steps in the hulls keep the waterline beam moderate, and offer good performance.

Small floor area in the nacelle, but welcome vertical portlights to limit the greenhouse effect.

Well-canvassed, the Lavezzi is capable of averaging 9 knots during ocean passages – if the trade winds are present.

The triangular saloon table and the offset companionways guarantee easy movement around the bridgedeck.

The steering positions offer a good view of the sail plan.

At the cost of less than fluid movement around the boat, nothing is lacking aboard, and you can spend long months on the water.

Maximum freeboard for comfort in the hulls, but a tall rig so you don’t get stuck in light airs.

The owner’s version which offers the happy skipper a full hull, with a large bathroom and desk, is our preference. The companionway can even be closed, to cut oneself off from the bridgedeck.

The first examples, equipped with a non-overlapping jib, deserve a ‘real’ genoa, to pep them up!

Rounded saloon and athwartships aft berths: the designer Olivier Flahault presents some appealing and functional innovations.

51 four-cabin models as opposed to 13 private owner’s versions: it’s not easy to find a three-cabin boat!

All the Leopard 43’s berths are arranged athwartships.

Two innovations on deck: the builder has provided a forward cockpit and a raised steering position.

The vertical portlights provide an exceptional view of the sea, light and no greenhouse effect. At the price of debatable aerodynamics.

Thanks to its double 'steps', the Leopard 44 succeeds in keeping the hulls quite slim at the waterline.

With 2.12 m of headroom, the saloon is comfortable. And there is no lack of light, thanks to its generous portlights.

The sail plan, with its mast positioned well forward, clearly favors the mainsail.

The U-shaped galley inherited from monohulls is appealing in use: you are perfectly secure when the sea is rough.

Marc Lombard took great care to design rather slim hulls. A good point for performance.

Inside, we find once again the Privilege finishing quality and the very special atmosphere aboard these catamarans built for demanding owners.

This 45 is certainly a particularly fast catamaran, but it is also very safe in heavy weather.

The compact nacelle reduces the liveable volume. Ideal for lightening the boat and offering more trampoline area.

Second-hand is of course cheaper…and is often the opportunity to sail aboard a multihull which is ready to set off (again). From 35 to 45 feet, the budgets remain moderate, with some good opportunities. We have chosen for you 15 of the most well-known 35 to 45-foot boats, which will therefore be easy to re-sell when you return – if you choose to return one day…

Athena 38 Best seller in the under 40-foot category

05 catamaran

In 1994, the Athena 38 came in between the Tobago 35 and the Venezia 42, two boats whose design it echoed – rounded lines, pug-nosed bows and a coachroof extension. Although it remains relatively lightweight, it is slower than the builder’s previous models. Its hulls are in fact appreciably beamier, and the freeboard is higher. It is thus perfectly suited to a long cruise in the West Indies or the Mediterranean, as a couple or a family. On the other hand, during long passages, it is a little lacking in length for a smooth passage through the sea. Nevertheless, its load-carrying capacity is appreciable for a catamaran of less than 40'. Pleasant under sail, easy to handle, this model quickly became a great commercial success – for both charter companies and private individuals – to such a point that it remained in its builder’s catalogue for almost 10 years. In 1998, the Athena was improved: we enjoyed a better view forward, thanks to a new steering position, directly inspired by the one on the Bahia 46. A solid platform was also provided, aft of the mainsheet track. This model’s strong points: great comfort, despite its modest size, easy movement both on deck and inside, and a particularly successful rounded saloon. The finishing on this model is clearly improved, compared to previous generations; just a few glued headlinings can be noticed here and there.

The plusses: very liveable catamaran for its size, good performance, very pleasant bridgedeck

The minuses: Not comfortable to windward in big seas, tiny hull portlights, small chart table

Most of the boats are still in good overall condition. To be checked: sails, engines, electric circuit, standing and running rigging. For those who wish to set off, check the following points: forestay and gooseneck fixing points, and steering cables.

54’ Ocean Renegade R5 - A Unique Solar Hybrid Electric Sailing Catamaran

05 catamaran

54’ Ocean Renegade R5 Catamaran

A Unique Solar Hybrid Electric Sailing Catamaran

If you cross the pond and head south to a place feared by mariners for as long as the Cape of Good Hope has been mapped, you will find Ashley Dee. He is a yacht builder with a vision for the future and a zeal for fast sailing catamarans. He has constructed some of the most advanced carbon re-enforced, electrically propelled sailing catamarans on the market and he has expanded his build capability to satisfy the American market. Ashley led the construction the 2020 54’ Ocean Renegade R5 Catamaran named ‘Oxygen’ and with the assistance from Nova Luxe, the boat arrived in St. Petersburg, FL in October from Cape Town, South Africa. Alternating between thrill and relaxation with a sport-minded, hybrid sailboat. The Ocean Renegade series is as keen on seizing the winds as it is cruising independently while you entertain. The vessel is tightly engineered to fit all of the comforts of a live-aboard boat, but when you’re behind the helm, sails like a race boat. And like the rest of the NOVALUXE fleet, the Ocean Renegade series features emission free solar/electric technology that preserves places worth going, and gets you there without the need to stop for diesel. Local Captain Scott MacGregor with Redbeard Boatworks has had the pleasure to pilot this unique vessel on a number of charters around Tampa Bay “The boat is very responsive due to it being lightweight. It is a wonderful sailing vessel which smoothly slides through the water at almost wind speed,” says Captain MacGreggor. “The setup of the sailboat lends itself nicely to the operation with the center wheel that articulates so you can see the sails as well as the ease of the controls of the running rigging due to its location. The all electric engines make motoring quiet, quite a change from a diesel engine vibrating through the boat with the exhaust gases.” “The sail plan with the code 0 really helps move the boat along. It will sail very close to the wind and will reach back to about 120-130 degrees wonderfully. The self tacking jib makes tacking easy as well.” “In all, it is a well thought out platform and a very performance first catamaran sailboat. Long distance cruising aboard this vessel is easy and with the electrical systems the fuel dock you would not need to be a stop along the way!” To say that Oxygen is a well equipped boat would be a huge understatement. Launched at the end of 2020, she is the yard's third electric catamaran and without a doubt the most capable. Equipped with the Torqeedo Deep Blue system, the gold standard in electric yacht propulsion, and for good reason. This catamaran was built in epoxy eglass with extensive carbon reinforcing and construction, including the entire coachroof and all spars.

She has the galley and salon volume of a much larger yacht and with her twin forward sailing cockpit doors together with her large aft cockpit doors, she possesses amazing flow and energy as one moves fore and aft. Amazing views of what’s ahead and below from the overhanging unstayed carbon longeron down the center of her bow. Move aft via her secure sailing handling cockpit, all the way back to her huge "dock-like" stern scoops to enter the warm Florida waters.

Under sail she is a pleasure to manage from her secure sailing cockpit with the electric line driver and primaries making her capable of push button sail trimming of the Jib-sheet, main-sheet, and traveler at the same time, from one position. She can also be sporty and rewards an eager crew with a deck gear plan and extended longeron that is able to fly dual headsails. This is especially useful in light air.

The 54’ Ocean Renegade R5 Catamaran, Oxygen is an incredible yacht and available now, ready to cruise, with beautiful finishings and extensive cruising equipment.

The Evolution of Innovation

When a Gunboat sails into an anchorage people stop what they’re doing. Heads turn and mouths open – It’s part of the joy of owning one! First impressions are as important as the view from two feet away, from any angle. The design is seamless, the finish millimeter perfect and the luster unusually deep. This is no ordinary yacht, but one with intoxicating looks and sailing prowess that most will only dream about. The first of the Gunboat-VPLP collaborations was an immediate trend-setter: The Gunboat 68 marked a step-change in the evolution of the brand, and performance cruising catamarans would forever be changed again. Building on the best, now we invite you to explore the Gunboat 70, the latest integration of sailing and lifestyle, elegance and comfort, in an ultra high-quality, ocean-going catamaran.

Uncompromising Design

Eye-opening, head-turning, jaw-dropping..

The synthesis of performance and lifestyle. The world’s foremost multihull naval architects and leaders in the yacht design industry came together to move the needle of the high-performance cruising catamaran market and set the pace for the future of Gunboat. Today’s Gunboat designs evolved through a close collaborative loop with VPLP, Patrick le Quément and Christophe Chedal Anglay, driven by our in-house design team. The Gunboat 70 blends athleticism and aerodynamics with aesthetically captivating sleek lines.

05 catamaran

The latest generation of Gunboats would not go unnoticed, with visual appeal as provocative as their ability to sail.

05 catamaran

“For the interior we orchestrated a seamless experience and a feeling of streamlined integration. The design team utilized virtual reality to test the experience of the environment to make every detail a pleasantry, more functional, an extension of natural use, a lifestyle.” Christophe Chedal Anglay — Chedal Anglay Design

Creating an Ocean Home

The Gunboat 70 interior design team guides you on a stimulating adventure to discover the unique characteristics and personality of your Gunboat. Patrick le Quément and CMF specialists Diane Noetinger and Estelle Barreau collaborate under the supervision of Christophe Chedal Anglay to present a number of concepts as a springboard. The essence is subtle and balanced, a well-rounded and well-traveled imprint on the core spirit of Gunboat style. We invite each owner to explore their own aesthetic inspiration and create a truly personalized yacht interior.

An inner sense of light

The disciplined focus on weight savings and performance continues throughout the interior with no compromise on the alluring style of a Gunboat, for an interior that is light, elegant and inviting. Gunboats feature luxury aircraft furniture constructed of a Nomex core and ultra-thin veneers - saving weight and elevating style.

Beautifully appointed, exceptionally intentional.

Throughout the interior, the selection of exotic materials enhances comfort and the feeling of light and space, creating clean and sophisticated spaces with ergonomics and practicality at the forefront. Each thoughtful detail of the interior adds to the overall feeling of comfort and refinement.

Space is maximized for usable storage and ample headroom.

Lighting is recessed and on dimmers for perfect ambiance.

Air conditioning is strategically placed to surround you in slow-moving cool air.

Upholstery panels and soft materials add comfort and absorb sound.

Performance & Sailing

Adrenaline-infused.

Pure performance is a magnetic force. Gunboat ignites the deepest desire to cast off the dock lines, take the helm, trim the sails. The attraction to the experience is as dynamic as the sailing itself. Any one of the compelling characteristics will lure you to the rest: sensational helm feel, aero design, high end materials and construction, and the finest sailing gear and instruments to name a few. Speed – the freedom to go – awakens the senses. You feel alive. The quest for superior sailing ends here.

05 catamaran

Stability and comfort, thrill and adventure - and to the monohull’s chagrin - an inverse relationship between performance and suffering.

05 catamaran

“In design, there is a rule that one searches for balance. With Gunboat we sought the perfect imbalance – the notion of movement and speed. The proportions make the boat look right, positioned to move forward in the sea, resolute and intentional for its purpose.” Patrick le Quément

Blue Coast 65 Sailing Catamaran

The Blue Coast 65 is a new, modern, fast and luxurious performance sailing catamaran for a smaller crew who want to enjoy worldwide cruising on all oceans.

Description

A dynamic "full-custom" design by our Naval Architect Jean-Jacques Coste, who has been recognized worldwide for his fast sailing performance multihull yachts for many years.

2 half-height helm stations provide sheltered positions. In bad weather, the yacht can be steered from the inside steering position in the saloon.

On the spacious flybridge with generous sunbathing areas and a dining area you can enjoy the sun, the steering positions can also be placed there as an option.

The very spacious main deck offers an enormously large, comfortable living area:

The forward cockpit area is directly connected to the saloon with a watertight door, the perfect place to find peace in port.

The saloon with a comfortable lounge area and a fully equipped kitchen in a U-shape is a great place to be, with a bar counter in the middle with a retractable TV.

The shaded rear terrace is larger than the saloon and is probably the most popular place to dine, relax, welcome guests and friends. An outdoor kitchen can also be accommodated there.

On the cabin deck, a spacious master suite with bath and shower, a crew or single cabin that can alternatively be set up as an office or walk-in wardrobe, 2 guest cabins and a workshop offer a high level of comfort.

The forward storage compartments provide space for the washing machine, supplies, sails and equipment.

The layout of the flybridge, main and cabin decks can also be customized to suit your requirements.

Available with traditional diesel engines or with the innovative electric hybrid system "Green ECO Power".

Design according to your ideas

The design of the BLUE COAST 65 can be adapted to your ideas as you desire in terms of number and layout of cabins, interior fittings and furnishings.

Silent Yachts

Creators of the world’s first series produced, solar-powered electric yachts.

Unlimited Range

Noiseless cruising, zero emission, minimal maintenance, pioneering solar powered yachting since 2009.

Silent yacht with solar panels on the roof in crystal clear water

The Original Solar Yacht

As the original inventors of series produced solar-electric yachts, we pioneered this innovative approach. Our first model, the Silent 64, was launched to the market in 2016, several years before any other shipyard considered the possibility of going electric.

For optimal performance and efficiency, our solar-electric drivetrain integrates seamlessly with all onboard systems. Compared to fossil fuelled powertrains of motoryachts, electric powertrains have very few moving parts, resulting in minimal maintenance, maximum reliability and significantly lower running costs.

Electric yacht sailing across the open waters with solar energy

The ability to recharge your own batteries with the sun marks a new era of freedom. Depending on cruising speeds and weather conditions, a Silent has virtually unlimited range, enabling you to live a fully self-sufficient lifestyle on board. Unbound by the limitations of fossil fuels, you are free to explore the horizons.

The technology powering our yachts today has been pioneered by our founders almost three decades ago. Continuous upgrading and steady optimization of the entire system are some of the key reasons our in-house developed solar-electric drivetrain offers a comprehensive portfolio of assurances and warranties.

A couple driving an electric tender

Powered by an advanced jet propulsion system, the fully electric Tender Series perfectly complements the experience on board of our catamarans. Following the same philosophy as our electric yachts, it was developed with a strong focus on being spacious, lightweight and efficient.

Two men driving an electric speed boat

As a new breed of Silent, the Speed 28 combines futuristic design with blistering pace. Her high-performance drivetrain is supported by triple foils and embedded solar cells on the hardtop. Advanced hydrodynamics and latest AI management make for a stable ride which always remains comfortable.

Why Silent Yachts

A sensible approach to yachting which works in self-sufficient harmony with nature and creates a completely new experience on board.

How Much Does a Catamaran Cost? (By Type)

Posted on May 27, 2022

We all want our catamaran or to upgrade our current ones, but keeping up with the prices and knowing whether we’re getting a good deal isn’t always easy.  For those of us who already own one, we know they are expensive, but we hope to get a deal.

The online forums are usually of great help with costs. You should check the market before asking to see what’s listed and what recently sold prices are. In the meantime, let’s take a general look at what the prices are out there. Keep in mind that the prices jump significantly every extra 15 feet in length.

For cruising cats, you’ll fork out between $200 thousand and a million dollars to get a new one. The median price is $500K. On the other end of the spectrum, pre-owned cats average $300 thousand. Generally, they cost between $200K and $600K. Looking for something recreational, that’s small? Prepare to spend about $45K to $50K.

Let’s look at the different types of cats, their average prices plus the things that impact their prices. We did in-depth research, but as suggested above, still go ahead and check because getting the right price means being thorough. Let’s take a look!

catamaran

We are going to tell you what the different types of catamarans cost and what helps to determine their prices.

New catamaran’s average price per foot :

Catamarans get a lot more expensive from 50 feet and up:

  • $2,835 per ft for under 30 feet
  • $9,767 per ft for 30 to 50 feet
  • $18,055 per ft for 50 to 75 feet
  • $41,737 per ft for 75 to 120 feet

New Cruising Catamarans

05 catamaran

A new cruising catamaran is one of the most costly sailboats on the market. It is only topped by the most modern aluminum or carbon yachts. Catamarans for cruising have an average price of $350,000, and you won’t ever find them for less than $100,000 when they’re brand new. According to length, a new cruising cat can fetch up to $1M in cost.

I know what you’re thinking (these prices are ridiculously high. I’ve been there, and I know what you’re thinking.) Why don’t I go with a monohull? You may count on paying about twice as much for a catamaran as you would for a monohull of the same length. It’s worth it, however, for the increased comfort and unparalleled quickness it provides.

Is there a reason why one catamaran costs $170,000, while another costs $340,000? Size alone isn’t the only thing to think about in defining the price difference between two cats. Pricing is influenced by the brand. However, design is the most important factor.

To keep costs down, a basic cruising catamaran uses only simple materials and tools. State-of-the-art cruising catamarans of the same weight and size class have vastly variable equipment, automation, and sailing traits. A pricey catamaran design takes thousands of extra hours to design and build.

The integrity of under-deck accommodation has a big effect on the boat’s final cost. The initial cost of high-end catamarans with central HVAC, innovative energy-saving systems, automation, and all of its related equipment is astronomical. It’s also worth noting that high-end custom interiors need quality fabrics and hours of expert labor.

Catamarans for cruising can be built and marketed for almost the cost of a fancy monohull. There aren’t very many differences in price between the various types of onboard cabins and equipment. Carbon fiber masts, AC, and auto-sailing controls aren’t standard equipment on the majority of cruising catamarans. That means they’re out of reach for most cruisers.

Small Racing Cat Prices

racing catamaran

Prices for small racing catamarans are very stable for specific types and makes. There isn’t much of a market for these yachts because they lack cabins. They’re great for weekend boat events.

The make, size, and condition of a small catamaran all play a role in its price. Racing catamarans like Hobie Cats, which are very popular with the sailing community, range in price from $10,000 to $30,000. Generally, an open racing catamaran costs between $10,000 and $20,000 and is readily available for less than $50,000.

The Cost of a Secondhand Catamaran for Cruising

catamaran

Pre-owned catamaran’s average cost per foot :

The average pre-owned catamaran costs about more than 30% less than a new one:

  • $2,200 per ft for less than 30 feet
  • $9,000 per ft for 30 to 50 feet
  • $16,200 per ft for 50 to 75 feet
  • $30,900 per ft for 75 to 120 feet

There are certain pros and cons to buying pre-owned catamarans. Around $250,000 is the typical price of a 40-foot secondhand catamaran. In the 1990s, these types of catamarans became popular, and the age of the boat isn’t much of a factor.

A used cat for sale under $100K is about as cheap as you’re going to get. It’s possible to get a tiny vintage catamaran or one that needs repairs, such as new masts or rigging. Fixing a cat can save owners up to $50K. Therefore, the trade-off is worth it for them.

The most expensive pre-owned catamarans typically cost between $700K and $1 million. These 45- to 55-foot-long vessels represent the apex of the industry. They’re typically no more than a few years old.

It’s not uncommon to find a pre-owned 2019 Lagoon 450F for roughly $550,000 to $620,000, or $635,500 brand new, with a wave-piercing hull. The depreciation on late-model catamarans is relatively minor.

There are a plethora of variables at play when determining the price of a secondhand cruising catamaran. The age of the boat is the most important determining factor in its price.

Most newer and late-model catamarans, even those made by reputable manufacturers, are in the $100,000 price range. Many sailors can’t afford to buy a sailboat outright, therefore this is a barrier to entry.

Catamarans Before the ’90s

old Catamarans

Used catamarans from the 1970s and 1980s can find for significantly less money, and the main consideration is the boat’s condition. Interior, rigging/hull conditions are all included in this category.

Since these vessels have an enviable reputation for their mythical qualities like speed, seaworthiness, or handling ability, they’ll command a higher price no matter how old or damaged they may be.

It’s important to have a good reputation when buying a secondhand catamaran because of its small size. Catamaran enthusiasts are close-knit and frequent the same web forums. Used catamaran prices are influenced by folks like this.

Why Do Catamarans Cost So Much?

how to pack for children on a cat cruise

Sailing enthusiasts often ponder why catamarans are more expensive than monohulls. Buying a 15-year-old 40-foot catamaran is more expensive than buying a new 40-foot monohull. Construction costs, demand, and ability all play a role in why this is happening.

The handling advantages of catamarans over monohulls cannot be overstated. For starters, they’re rock-solid, which means they’re better for passengers and crew alike when traveling through rough waves. They’re safe, easy to handle, and nearly impossible to capsize when on the water. They also feature a lot more useful interior storage and living space, so they can accommodate a large number of individuals.

When it comes to speed, catamaran vessels have an advantage over their hull-bound counterparts. Catamarans can go twice as fast as monohulls, resulting in lower expenses and a longer usable sailing range.

The cost of designing and building catamarans is significantly higher than the cost of building monohulls. To link the two halves and hold up the mast, catamarans necessitate meticulous engineering and material strength calculations.

A catamaran has two separate hulls with living quarters and an enclosed center cockpit, which consumes a lot more material than a monohull. Greater-quality components, such as winches, navigational systems, and other shipboard controls, all add up to a higher overall cost.

With just the expense of design and materials, a catamaran’s construction can cost as much as three times as much as a conventional boat. Used catamarans are in high demand because of the numerous advantages they offer their owners, and as a result, their manufacturers are unable to keep up with the demand.

What Determines the Catamaran’s Cost?

Numerous factors affect the cost of a catamaran, but the most important is its size and type. Predictably, larger catamarans cost a lot more than smaller ones. As compared to monohulls, the size of catamaran vessels does not vary greatly. There are significant price and use differences between large and small catamarans.

This is because there are two primary varieties of catamarans on the market, and they come in a wide range of sizes. The largest catamaran is the cruising catamaran, which is virtually never less than 30 feet in length or more than 50 feet in length. Catamarans used for leisure or racing have no cabins and are rarely longer than 30 feet.

Identifying an Affordable Catamaran

Is it possible to tell whether or not you’re getting a decent price on a catamaran? A suitable “official” source for boat pricing is a catamaran dealership or yacht appraiser. However, the online catamaran community must not be neglected.
