Meet the Nordhavn 51

Pacific Asian Enterprises has announced the newly designed Nordhavn 51, a sistership to the N41 that emphasizes streamlined build orders instead of individual customization.

The Nordhavn 51 has two staterooms and two heads, along with a flybridge. According to the builder, the Nordhavn 51 will closely resemble other long-range cruising Nordhavns with a separate pilothouse, while the interior will mirror the finishes of the N41. The yacht will be built with stabilizers, a bow thruster and a davit among the standard equipment.

Standard power will be twin 160-horsepower John Deere 4045AFM85 M1 engines. The Nordhavn 51 will be CE Certified Category A for offshore use.

According to Pacific Asian Enterprises, the first seven hulls of the Nordhavn 51 have already been reserved for purchase.

When will Hull No. 1 of the Nordhavn 51 hit the production line? Tooling is underway, and the first hull is expected to lay up in March in Turkey. Construction is expected to take 18 months.

Nordhavn Building New 41 in Turkey. Around the World, Anyone?

Here’s big news for Nordhavn fans. The company is building a new Nordhavn 41 in Turkey, and it’s going to be ready to cruise around the world. Indeed, Nordhavn says the new 41 will be “the most capable, efficient, safe and sea-kindly passagemaker ever built.”

The 41 certainly comes with a rich heritage. Nordhavn put power cruising on the map when its 40 went 24,000 nm around the world in 2001-2002. Since then Nordhavns, with models now ranging from 47 to 120 feet, have gone more than seven million nm in ocean crossings. In keeping with that tradition, the new 41 has a CE Certification Category A, meaning it can operate in winds over 40 knots and waves above 13 feet.

The original lines for the 41 were drawn by Jeff Leishman, Nordhavn’s design chief. Nordhavn then worked with its new partner, Vripack Yacht Design in the Netherlands, who ran computerized test programs to optimize the hull design for performance and safety.The boat comes in two layouts: A single, with the large owner’s cabin in the bow with lots of drawer space, a walk-in closet and a large head with stall shower; extra guests can sleep on the port and starboard settees in the salon. There’s also a two-stateroom option.

The engines are twin Kubota mechanically-injected diesels marinized by Beta Marina. Each engine is capable of pushing the boat at cruising speed. The props are protected by a deep, long keel. The boat has a standard bow thruster to make maneuvering easy, particularly with the twin engines. For cruising comfort, it has ABT Trac 220 stabilizers, and 4,000 pounds of lead ballast in the keel.

Ready for cruising, the new 41 has room for a 12-foot tender on the boat deck, and a standard 800-pound davit. It’s equipped with a 7/9 kW Onan genset, combination washer/dryer, 400-watt flexible solar panels on the salon cabintop, and a four-person Revere life raft.

In a new twist, Nordhavn is making a big plus out of the Turkey location. You can pick up your new 41 near the factory in western Turkey, spend the summer cruising through the Aegean, the Med and the Adriatic, and then turn it in to Nordhavn’s agent in Gibraltar who will ship it to the Nordhavn facility in Palm Beach. The point is, you could cruise it across the Atlantic in your own, or you can enjoy some of the best cruising grounds in the world, fly home, and pick up your new boat in Florida.

Nordhavn 51 first look: Turn-key trawler yacht promises globetrotting adventures

Nordhavn has released details of an all-new 51ft trawler yacht. As with last summer’s entry-level 41, the new Nordhavn 51 is designed to be a more affordable ‘turn-key’ model than the semi-custom cruisers that make up the bulk of its fleet.

Built in Turkey rather than Taiwan or China, both the Nordhavn 41 and Nordhavn 51 are fixed spec production boats designed to simplify production and help keep prices down.

Outwardly the 51 is a classic go-anywhere Nordhavn trawler yacht . This includes Nordhavn’s unusual asymmetric layout – on the port side the saloon extends right out to the full beam of the hull whereas to starboard it leaves room for a wide, partially covered side deck.

To hang fenders on the port side you’ll have to step up to the flybridge from the cockpit or via the shorter run of stairs from the foredeck.

Twin doors on either side of the bridge also lead out to truncated side wells with steps up to the foredeck rather than a full-width Portuguese bridge, presumably to create more headroom down below.

Other design features like the raised wheelhouse with reverse-rake windscreens, high foredeck and split-level flybridge with an aft deck crane for tender storage are classic Nordhavn styling cues. The forward half of the hull accommodates two ensuite double cabins that are much the same size.

Nordhavn 51 owners will be able to choose whether they prefer to take the amidships one with a bed athwartships that may offer better passage comfort or the one in the bow, which has a central island bed and gives better privacy when lying in a busy marina.

Turn-key specification includes everything you need to start cruising

Propulsion consists of twin 160hp John Deere diesels spinning out via straight ZF boxes and shafts – another change from the Nordhavn’s usual practice of fitting one larger main engine with a smaller ‘get-you-home’ wing engine hooked up to a sailboat-style folding prop.

The expected top speed of the Nordhavn 51 will be around 10 knots with a typical cruising speed of 7-8 knots. A total fuel capacity of 5,500 litres located in two tanks outboard of the engines gives a maximum theoretical range of more than 3,000nm at slow speed.

Prices for the new Nordhavn 51 will start at around US$1.5 million excluding taxes and delivery. That includes a comprehensive sailaway spec, which according to Nordhavn’s director of marketing Jenny Stern covers pretty much everything you’d need, bar a watermaker and tender.

Asymmetric styling leaves room for a wide side deck to starboard

For comparison, the base price of the single-engined semi-custom Nordhavn 52 is $1.52m but that doesn’t include delivery to Europe or an estimated $100,000-$150,000 worth of extras on top. A well-specified Nordhavn 41 comes in at $699,000 excluding taxes and delivery charges.

Sales of both the Nordhavn 41 and Nordhavn 51 are proving very strong with 30 orders for the former and nine for the latter within a month of the first renderings being revealed.

Turkish build partner Telgeren has already opened a second production facility to keep pace with demand. The first Nordhavn 51 is expected to be delivered in summer 2022.

Interestingly, many European customers are now choosing to pick up their boats from Turkey and cruise them westwards through the Mediterranean or up through Europe via the Danube and Rhine. Even a few American clients are planning European cruises prior to shipping their new boats home.

“The current vogue for trawler yachts shows no sign of stopping,” says MBY editor Hugo Andreae. “Part of their appeal is the inherent fuel efficiency of a displacement hull but the ability to travel the globe in the safety of your own floating home also looks a far better option than being crammed into a flying cigar to go and stay in a busy hotel.”
