Absolutely one of the nicest facilities around. Great dock hands, docks and amenities. Plenty of water at all tides. Nice pool and spotless restrooms. Barnegat Light also had a lot to offer with nice restaurants and of course the lighthouse.

This is a peninsula off of 20th Street in Barnegat Light that is a part of Long Beach Township. A residential community of lagoon and bayfront homes that attracts the boaters with its wide bay for sailing, jet skiing & paddle boarding plus easy access to the Atlantic Ocean through Barnegat Light inlet. A few homes are not located on water, but you can keep a boat the High Bar Harbor Yacht Club either by purchasing a condominium boat slip or renting one. Excellent crabbing and fishing for the beginner and seasoned anglers can be found off your dock or among the salt sedges. Bring your bike to explore Barnegat Light and definitely grabbing coffee and a bag of breakfast goodies to take back to the family. There are two parks for children to play [one with a bocce ball court – bring your own equipment] plus the playground in Barnegat Light. Reoccurring sales seem to be families wanting the water experience off their dock. Vacation rentals are cottages, raised ranches and large 4 bedroom contemporaries; each with their own character and pricing. Let one of our agents expand on this for you.

I have decided to keep my boat out of the water this summer to complete some long over due maintenance and repairs. The slip is 60 ft and located at the High Bar Harbor Yacht Club on Long Beach Island in Barnegat light. Docks are all floating with power, water, cable and pump out provided by the staff. Slip rental comes with complete use of all the yacht clubs benefits which include use of the club house, pool, private individual bathrooms with showers, complete full kitchen and lounge. Slip is D-8 and this dock is located second from the last overlooking the bay and the Barnegat Lighthouse with the Barnegat Inlet in view. Linekin Bay Yacht Club at Murray Hill

high bar harbor yacht club

I wrote part of this article 16 years ago in 2008. I enjoy at times writing about the not too distant past, meaning the 20th century and my memories of childhood adventures.

The south end of Murray Hill Road was a quiet place when I was young in the 1950s, but it was not always so. Most sizeable summer colonies had or have casinos, which are places for meetings, church services, group dinners, fairs, and so on—an all-purpose building that colonies often built and that had no relation to gambling. People unused to localities with summer colonies often struggle with the use of the term casino.

Murray Hill and Bayville

According to Greene’s 1906 history, in 1904 the Murray Hill and Bayville summer colonies combined forces to build a casino at the end of Murray Hill Road. The printed material we have at the museum generated toward the mid-1900s by Bayville colonists doesn’t mention a shared casino with Murray Hill. As a matter of fact, the material states they didn’t have one at all. I can only assume the arrangement was shortlived and that the Bayville writers hadn’t read Greene’s 1906 region history and had lost its colony’s earliest history. The 7-8-1911 Boothbay Register recorded that the Linekin Bay Casino Association had been changed in name, scope, and organized capacity to the Linekin Bay Yacht Club ( the LBYC). Not too much chance it was a fantasy.

Big Doings

Soon after the casino was built in 1904, the Bayville and Murray Hill colonists complemented it with a large steamer wharf, and the Linekin Bay Yacht Club was complete. In 2008 John Tibbetts of Burlington, Conn., sent us the photo shown along with a few more of the combined colonies’ amenities, including many other wonderful old region shots. Some were taken from the casino and another shows a regatta near a rather grand wharf. It's too bad that the pattern on the LBYC flag is not clear. I imagine the photos may date to 1912 or 1913, which were particularly active years for the little yacht club. They even entertained the Boston Yacht Club during the July 1913 regatta and Fete Days, putting on motor boat races, clambakes, luncheons, and a dance.

The wharf disappeared long before I came on the scene. If not removed by the LBYC, the town, or state, or some such entity would have demanded its removal as a navigational hazard with planks and pilings perhaps going adrift. But the old casino lived on in the ramshackle fashion that abandoned buildings did in that era: dark, dank, moldering, and an invitation to kids like me and Sarah Jones Giles in the late 1950s. Large and cavernous, we remembered a stage at one end of the casino. For about five years before high school, I was down at or around Sarah's house on Murray Hill most days, and in the 7th and 8th grade, we enjoyed cooking hot dogs after school on a little fire along the shore down by the casino. We often saw signs in the road of couples having parked down there or the aftermath of parties, but we haunted the place only in daylight.

Robert Rice’s Memories

I talked to Robert Rice (born 1938), caretaker for the casino property, about its demise. He said he believed it was used until World War II by Murray Hill summer people. But the war’s increasingly stringent gas rationing cut down the summer population’s ability to drive here, and the casino eventually became disused permanently. I heard many a story from older residents about the illegal hidden buying and selling of ration stamps in that era.

In the early 1960s, boatbuilder Sonny Hodgdon, of Murray Hill Road and Sarah’s uncle, tried to resurrect the association with the casino a part of a revived organization, but to no avail. At some point, Robert said he thought Merle Hyson tore off the rotten south end of it for the Manns, who’d bought the casino and added on to it to make it their cottage.

In the 1950s Sarah and I followed the summer surface water line by the casino to the Harbor through the woods. It was a toss-up—walk Route 96 and hope cars would give us a ride or walk directly by the water line. When going by the pipeline the Presley house was the only structure before Bayville, and Sarah remembers us running across his property, to minimize invading his privacy.

And the first time we hit Bayville heading to the Harbor, we were shocked that there was a village with a post office (seasonal) so close to our homes that we knew nothing about! Not to mention passing through Appalachee and Lobster Cove—brand new places to us. All in all, walking the pipeline from the end of Murray Hill Road to the Harbor was a very revealing adventure.

Things to Do

Music and concerts, subscriber only, music and concerts | what to know if you’re headed to the minnesota yacht club festival, gwen stefani, alanis morissette and red hot chili peppers are headlining.

A stage and bleachers next to a river.

Headlined by Gwen Stefani, Alanis Morissette and Red Hot Chili Peppers, the festival (which despite its name has nothing to do with yacht rock) is promoted by C3 Presents, an Austin, Texas, company that’s also behind Austin City Limits Music Festival, Voodoo Music + Arts Experience and the modern-day Lollapalooza. C3 was the largest independent promoter in the world until Live Nation bought a controlling stake in the company in 2014.

Organizers expect to attract more than 30,000 concertgoers each day.

While the Irish Fair of Minnesota calls Harriet Island home each August, music festivals have had a rough go on the site. The original Lollapalooza (back when it was a traveling festival) landed on the site in 1991, 1992 and 1994, but flooding forced the fest to move to the late St. Paul Civic Center in 1993.

Live Nation attempted to establish a new annual event, the River’s Edge Music Festival, in 2012. Despite big-name headliners Tool and the Dave Matthews Band, the festival didn’t attract enough paying customers to convince the concert promoting giant to return for a second year.

Here’s what folks headed to the Minnesota Yacht Club Festival need to know:

As of Wednesday afternoon, tickets were still available at a number of price points, starting at $135 for one day general admission (or $255 for two days) all the way up to platinum tickets for $925 ($1,395 for two days), which include a number of perks including free food and drinks, front-of-stage viewing and access to an air-conditioned lounge. See minnesotayachtclubfestival.com for details.

Many of the general admission and general admission plus tickets are sold out, but there are verified resale tickets available, some at lower prices than face value.

Getting there

There are two entrances to the festival. The main entrance is at Harriet Island Boulevard and South Wabasha Street, while the west entrance is on West Water Street between Bidwell Street and Plato Boulevard.

There is no on-site parking at the festival, but its website lists numerous downtown St. Paul parking lots that are a 10- to 16-minute walk from the site. Several Metro Transit buses stop a half-mile from Harriet Island. The rideshare drop off is at 49 E. Fillmore Ave. The festival promises “ample bike parking” located near the two entrances.

What is allowed on site

Feel free to bring: Small clutch purses and fanny packs (6” x 9” or smaller) with no more than one pocket, all other bags must be clear and smaller than 12” x 6” x 12”, empty hydration packs and reusable water bottles, strollers, frisbees, binoculars, blankets, basic cameras (no detachable lenses or other accessories), sunscreen in non-aerosol containers (3.4 ounces or less), personal-sized hand sanitizer and factory sealed Naloxone/Narcan kits.

What isn’t allowed

Pretty much everything you would think, including outside food and beverage, coolers, aerosol containers, umbrellas, chairs, wagons, skateboards, drones, fireworks and illegal substances.

Concertgoers must wear securely fastened wristbands that are available at the box office. Wristbands can be activated online to add an emergency contact and to use for cashless transactions (with a pin number). Wristbands that are damaged, lost or stolen can be replaced by the original purchaser one time only for $20. Patrons can leave and reenter at will up until 7 p.m. each day.

There is a guest services tent that has earplugs and a lost and found. Free hydration stations are located throughout the site. Lockers are available to rent for $25 each day or $48.50 for both.

Who is playing

Gwen Stefani sings on stage flanked by two dancers.

Friday’s schedule includes: Harbor and Home (12:45-1:15 p.m.), Gully Boys (1:15-2), Michigander (2-2:45), Morgan Wade (2:45-3:45), Durry (3:45-4:45), Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (4:45-5:45), The Head and the Heart (5:45-6:45), Gwen Stefani (6:45-8), the Black Crowes (8-9) and Alanis Morissette (9-10:30).

Saturday’s lineup includes: Nico Vega (1-1:30), Bugsy (1:30-2:15), Wilderado (2:15-3), Soul Asylum (3-4), Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue (4-5), Hippo Campus (5-6), the Hold Steady (6-7), the Offspring (7-8), Gary Clark Jr. (8-9) and Red Hot Chili Peppers (9-10:30).
