Where to go mega-yacht-spotting in Mallorca
With its prime position in the glittering Mediterranean and ever-growing popularity amongst celebrities, tech moguls and the rich and the famous, Mallorca has established a position as the port of choice for the worlds most fabulous megayachts. The island builds on its reputation and invests further in creating state-of-the-art facilities and booming service industry around them. Even if you don't yet own a magnificent boat, make sure you include a trip to one of the marinas in Mallorca to get your fix of yacht-spotting! There are over a dozen marinas in Mallorca, but three of them stand out if only super-yachts float your boat (pun very much intended!). Palma de Mallorca: Real Club Nautico & Club de Mar Palma has two neighbouring marinas located right in the heart of the city center. Real Club Nautico is the oldest and biggest marina in the Balearic Islands. It's also the one best known for hosting an annual Copa del Rey Regatta, where one of the crews is skippered by the reigning King of Spain, Felipe VI. The event takes place at the end of July - try to arrange your trip to coincide and get a glimpse of the competition. Club de Mar is just very slightly west of the Palma Cathedral and Real Club Nautico. It boasts facilities for mooring the biggest yachts, up to 135m in length (plus a waiting dock for boats up to 350m). You can expect to see the most magnificent and biggest of super-yachts here. Clients include Jeff Bezos, Steve Jobs' heirs, David Geffen, and a whole host of tech moguls, industrialists and celebrities. Both 'Clubs' are easily accessible and a perfect place for yacht-spotting - this is where the biggest boats are moored. We particularly recommend an evening walk when the boats are gloriously lit up! Puerto Portals About a 10-minute drive west of Palma is a slightly smaller, but equally exclusive Puerto Portals. It's the axis of a whole upmarket neighbourhood and very much an engine for the whole local economy. Known as the ‘millionaires’ marina', it's not just about the boats, it's a great place to spend the day. With plenty of luxury boutiques, pop-up shops (like Elizabeth Hurley's beach pop-up), lots of restaurants and bars, it's the ultimate place to see and be seen. It's also known for organising fabulous events, including an annual Christmas Market - make sure you have a look at the agenda to plan your visit. Port Adriano A little further west of Palma and Puerto Portals lies the last marina on our list. It's a fairly new addition to Mallorca, having been built in 2007. But what a spectacular addition it is! Possibly the most technologically advanced marina in the Med, it was designed by Philippe Starck. The main building was shaped to resemble a mega-yacht itself. It melts into it's surrounding, with the woodwork mirroring that on the decks of moored yachts, bollards and lighting being reflecting the design of the yachts themselves. It's a particularly great place for yacht-spotting as it can accommodate boats up to 80m long, having had the floor of the harbour dredged to create enough depth for them. Port Adriano was built to become a lifestyle axis for the neighbourhood, so you can expect plenty of shopping, dining and events. Make sure you plan a few hours to spend on your visit.
Other than the marinas, Mallorca offers plenty of places to go yacht-spotting. During the high season pretty much any cove will be speckled with a few at least. But if you'd like to make yourself more comfortable, buy a day pass in a hotel like Hospes Maricel, Nixe Palace or Pure Salt Port Adriano . Each of them will let you lounge comfortably by the pool, while a yacht parade passes by! Photo by Arno Senoner on Unsplash

Jeff Bezos’ $500 million sailing yacht Koru is spotted for the first time cruising under sail and it’s a sight to behold. So massive is the vessel that the crew on the deck appear as tiny specs.
Exactly a month after the $500 million Koru megayacht was delivered to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, the stunning luxury vessel was spotted for the very first time with its sails unfurled – it’s a sight to behold. The record-breaking megayacht left for her maiden voyage to Gibraltar on April 6 and is currently undergoing sailing sea trials off the coast of Palma de Mallorca, as confirmed by its AIS data. Reportedly, Koru has been joined by its shadow vessel named Abeona . Built by Damen Yachting, the 75-meter superyacht has been designed to function as a support vessel for Koru. Named after the Roman goddess of voyages and departures, the vessel will carry all the toys and tenders that aren’t carried on board the mothership along with accommodating the additional crew. It also features a helipad and hangar for a D14-type helicopter.
Previously known as Y721, Koru was commissioned by Bezos in 2018 after he fell in love with Oceanco’s Black Pearl. Measuring 127 meters in length, it’s the world’s second-largest sailing yacht, with Russian oligarch Andrey Melnichenko’s Sailing Yacht A currently holding the record. Nevertheless, Bezos’ majestic sailing yacht is the largest vessel built in the Netherlands.

U.S. seizes mega yacht owned by oligarch with close ties to Putin
PALMA DE MALLORCA, Spain — The U.S. government seized a mega yacht in Spain owned by an oligarch with close ties to the Russian president on Monday, the first in the government’s sanctions enforcement initiative to “seize and freeze” giant boats and other pricey assets of Russian elites .
Spain’s Civil Guard and U.S. federal agents descended on the yacht at the Marina Real in the port of Palma de Mallorca, the capital of Spain’s Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea. Associated Press reporters at the scene saw police going in and out of the boat on Monday morning.
The seizure was confirmed by two people familiar with the matter. The people could not discuss the matter publicly and spoke to AP on condition of anonymity. A Spanish Civil Guard spokesman confirmed that officers from the Spanish police body and from the FBI were at the marina searching the vessel Monday morning and said further details would be released later.
A Civil Guard source told The Associated Press that the immobilized yacht is Tango, a 78-meter (254-feet) vessel that carries Cook Islands flag and that Superyachtfan.com , a specialized website that tracks the world’s largest and most exclusive recreational boats, values at $120 million. The source was also not authorized to be named in media reports and spoke to AP on condition of anonymity.
The yacht is among the assets linked to Viktor Vekselberg, a billionaire and close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin who heads the Moscow-based Renova Group, a conglomerate encompassing metals, mining, tech and other assets, according to U.S. Treasury Department documents. All of Vekselberg’s assets in the U.S. are frozen and U.S. companies are forbidden from doing business with him and his entities.
The move is the first time the U.S. government has seized an oligarch’s yacht since Attorney General Merrick Garland and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen assembled a task force known as REPO — short for Russian Elites, Proxies and Oligarchs — as an effort to enforce sanctions after Russia invaded Ukraine in late February.
Vekselberg has long had ties to the U.S. including a green card he once held and homes in New York and Connecticut. The Ukrainian-born businessman built his fortune by investing in the aluminum and oil industries in the post-Soviet era.
Vekselberg was also questioned in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and has worked closely with his American cousin, Andrew Intrater, who heads the New York investment management firm Columbus Nova.
Vekselberg and Intrater were thrust into the spotlight in the Mueller probe after the attorney for adult film star Stormy Daniels released a memo that claimed $500,000 in hush money was routed through Columbus Nova to a shell company set up by Donald Trump’s personal attorney, Michael Cohen. Columbus Nova denied that Vekselberg played any role in its payments to Cohen.
Vekselberg and Intrater met with Cohen at Trump Tower, one of several meetings between members of Trump’s inner circle and high-level Russians during the 2016 campaign and transition.
The 64-year-old mogul founded Renova Group more than three decades ago. The group holds the largest stake in United Co. Rusal, Russia’s biggest aluminum producer, among other investments.
Vekselberg was first sanctioned by the U.S. in 2018, and again in March of this year, shortly after the invasion of Ukraine began. Vekselberg has also been sanctioned by authorities in the United Kingdom.
The U.S. Justice Department has also launched a sanctions enforcement task force known as KleptoCapture , which also aims to enforce financial restrictions in the U.S. imposed on Russia and its billionaires, working with the FBI, Treasury and other federal agencies. That task force will also target financial institutions and entities that have helped oligarchs move money to dodge sanctions.
The White House has said that many allied countries, including German, the U.K, France, Italy and others are involved in trying to collect and share information against Russians targeted for sanctions. In his State of the Union address, President Joe Biden warned oligarch that the U.S. and European allies would “find and seize your yachts, your luxury apartments, your private jets.”
“We are coming for your ill-begotten gains,” he said.
Wednesday’s capture is not the first time Spanish authorities have been involved in the seizure of a Russian oligarch’s superyacht. Officials there said they had seized a vessel valued at over $140 million owned by the CEO of a state-owned defense conglomerate and a close Putin ally.
French authorities have also seized superyachts, including one believed to belong to Igor Sechin, a Putin ally who runs Russian oil giant Rosneft, which has been on the U.S. sanctions list since Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.
Italy has also seized several yachts and other assets.
Italian financial police moved quickly seizing the superyacht “Lena” belonging to Gennady Timchenko, an oligarch close to Putin, in the port of San Remo; the 65-meter (215-foot) “Lady M” owned by Alexei Mordashov in nearby Imperia, featuring six suites and estimated to be worth 65 million euros; as well as villas in Tuscany and Como, according to government officials.
Para reported from Madrid and Balsamo reported from Washington.

A premier snorkeling experience in Mexicos' famed Cabo Plumo National Marine Park
We hop from a small fishing boat onto an even smaller panga, as we’re about to enter Mexico’s Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, located along the East Cape of the Baja California Peninsula between Cabo San Lucas to the south and La Paz to the north. I’m here with my two teenage daughters, and they are about go snorkeling for their first time. They are excited and a bit nervous. “Will there be sharks?” they inquire for a third or fourth time. “Definitely not,” our guide responds with a smile. Which comes across as comforting if not convincing.
It’s February, and we’ve traded the prime ski season of our home in Park City, Utah, for some warmer adventures, together with a healthy dose of fine dining, relaxation and tanning our pale winter skin. The UV index has crossed into double digits, which is the only KPI (key performance indicator) my daughters have for a beach vacation. It’s a metric they obsess about for weeks in advance. Alas, the skies above the Sea of Cortez are finally clear after a couple days of wind and passing clouds. The air temperature is climbing into the 80s, and the water temps are “wetsuit optional” in the 70s.
The reason for switching watercraft is because larger boats are prohibited within the 27 square miles of the protected Park. The area was designated as such in 1995 and has since became a UNESCO World Heritage Site (2005) and a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance (2008). This is because it’s home to 11 different species of coral, which are also the oldest in North America and the northernmost in the eastern Pacific Ocean.
There are other groups in the Park searching for marine wildlife experiences with their guides, and it brings back memories of our safari in Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve . Except we’ve traded bush vehicles for a pangas, and instead of leopards and elephants, we’re seeking sea lions, sea turtles, humpback whales and perhaps a pod of orcas that’s been spotted recently. The big difference between a safari and snorkeling is that we’re about to get up close and personal with these sea animals.

Quite fortunate to spot a humpback whale and to hear him sing from beneath the surface
There are three stops on the snorkeling tour. The first is a swim along one of the bigger reefs, where schools of colorful fish including Mexican goatfish, snapper, porkfish and yellowtail snapper are concentrated. We’re in approximately 40 feet of water, and visibility is phenomenal. Next stop is an area frequented by sea turtles, and the finale is swimming with a raft of friendly sea lions around a large rock outcropping, upon which they can otherwise be found sunning themselves. Given how they play and bark and interact with one another, it feels like we’re swimming in underwater dog park.
The bookends of this marine adventure include seeing a humpback whale on our way out to Cabo Pulmo. We can actually hear the big boy singing from under the water, which is quite a treat. And on the way back, the rumored killer whales make a cameo. These apex predators put on a playful performance, at which point our guide lets slip that shark sightings are, in fact, a possibility even if highly unlikely. Had she been completely transparent, though, I’m not sure my daughters would have gotten in the water.
The Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas
Newly constructed residences overlook the marina, which can accommodate certain classes of mega ... [+] yacht
When planning a vacation to Baja California Sur, you can choose from a range of different Cabo experiences. I’ve personally marveled at how you can fly two-and-half-hours from LAX to Mexico just to drive 30 minutes back to California. Because that’s what it feels like at resorts like the One & Only, Las Ventanas and countless others. There’s certainly a market for that sense of familiarity in a foreign land, as if these resorts were extensions of the US Embassy. But that can be antithetical to an authentic Mexican experience.
Unique on this vast desert peninsula, the Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas is found on the remote East Cape. You get here by way of a 45-minute ground transfer from the airport. After a winding drive through the desert on Mexico’s Route 1, you pass multiple security check points before arriving at the resort, which sits on the serene, crystal clear and swim-friendly Sea of Cortez. The Four Seasons is the anchor property for an ambitious East Cape development project (Costa Palma) that includes a marina with mega yacht capacity, two more luxury hotels in the planning stages and a private airport nearby that will be ready in the next few years. Today, however, the Four Seasons feels like a secret oasis in an undiscovered part of Mexico. It feels more like staying in a village than a resort, as there is little else on the East Cape beyond this self-contained paradise. Is it luxurious? Obviously. Is it authentic? In a less touristy sense, absolutely.
One of several secluded, semi-private pools on the property
The Four Seasons accommodation options now include full residences and villas in addition to the standard suites and guest rooms. These homes range from two to six bedrooms, all with ocean views. Our residence features three full bathrooms and three bedrooms, one of which includes four bunk beds; an exquisitely decorated living area, a full kitchen and dining room; and a covered patio with plunge pool. A few amenities to note: connecting to the WiFi also means connecting to the sound system for playing music from a mobile device, and the toilets include heated seats with bidets.
Despite an occupancy rate of 80% while here, the layout of the property makes it feel like we have the place to ourselves. The beach is quite expansive with plenty of toys for kids and adults alike. The ‘60s era VW bus beach bar is an authentic and nostalgic touch, given that I used to own one while at the University of Arizona in Tucson and often drove it to Mexico for beach adventures. And though the Four Seasons beach is beautiful, the pools are equally alluring. There are a two main pools, one dedicated to adults and another for families. However, there are several satellite pools that offer secluded experiences while also being protected from the wind if that happens to be in the forecast. The pools are constructed in such a way that they feel quite beachy. They are surrounded in beach sand, and the pools themselves feature natural rock features as if you’d stumbled upon a hot spring in the mountains. Where you’re also served sea bass and shrimp tacos with margaritas for lunch.
The Sea of Cortez is often as calm as a lake, which is a big advantage over the open ocean of Cabo ... [+] San Lucas
The dining options are also rather extensive with plenty of options to keep your palate engaged over a week-long trip. Estario Milos hosts both breakfast and dinner. This is one of chef Costas Spiliadis’ seven Mediterranean seafood restaurants of the same name. Breakfast features an expansive buffet as well as menu service, but with sister locations in New York, London, Las Vegas and Montreal, it is best known for ultra fresh seafood dinners. From local oysters and red snapper to Maine lobsters and a whole bluefin tuna, the choices span the globe. Preparations range from sashimi and tartar to grilled and salt baked. The bluefin sashimi is some of the best I’ve ever had. This should be the premier dinner of any Four Seasons trip, so plan outfits accordingly.
Bluefin tuna sashimi
Limon features an al fresco dining experience from Four Seasons executive chef Fabio Quarta with a menu consisting of wood-fired dishes including pork ribs, shrimp and tomahawk steaks. The signature Asado Argentino entree includes a shareable selection of chorizo, short ribs, skirt steak, sweet breads and chimichurri. The roasted cauliflower is a highlight starter with just enough kick from the serrano chili, and then there is a selection of pastas, such as the Baja style rigatoni carbonara with a cured organic egg yolk and pecorino cheese for a second course. For dessert, I’d recommend the Choco Cake with a Tabasco chocolate sponge, chocolate ganache and dark chocolate sauce paired with an extra añejo tequila digestif.
Nancy Silverton’s Mozza Baja is an Italian-themed restaurant located across the marina at the Marina Village. Silverton is best known for Michelin-starred Osteria Mozza and chi SPACCA, along with founding La Brea Bakery in Los Angeles. Mozza Baja is a short sea taxi ride from the Four Seasons, so that’s an extra feature for this dining experience. The restaurant’s key feature, both aesthetically and gastronomically, is the wood-fired pizza oven, around which diners can sit to enjoy their meal. Beyond the pizzas, menu highlights include a cauliflower friti starter with Calabrian mint aioli; a selection of pastas such as the sopresine bolognese and a 32-ounce bone-in porcini-rubbed ribeye steak.
More than likely, the Four Season will offer more adventure options that you'll have days to fill
In addition to snorkeling in the adjacent National Marine Park, the Four Seasons offers a range of different land and sea adventures from hiking to waterfalls and horseback riding to surfing and big game fishing. This is in the true spirit of the Baja peninsula, as it is renowned for its multitude of outdoor pursuits that most tourists will miss on a typical trip to Cabo. If you encounter a windy day, which is not uncommon on the Sea of Cortez, the two-hour ATV off-road adventure is an ideal option.
This guided trip features high-end, Honda side-by-side ATVs that seat up to four people. The trails head south along the coast toward Cabo Pulmo National Park. If you’ve already done the scuba adventure, this parallels that initial 45-minute boat trip on land. The reason it’s ideal during a windy day is because these ATVs kick up a sizable wake of dust. You wear goggles and a face covering to handle it, but a steady breeze is all you need to clear the dust before you drive into it. You just manage a follow distance accordingly.
The ATV route is a combination of tight sand dune trails winding up and down the hills along the coast and going flat out along the beach, where the waves will be lapping at your tires on several sections. There aren’t too many beaches in the US that would allow this, so it’s quite a privilege to rail ATVs along a picturesque beach on the Sea of Cortez as the sun starts to set over Baja’s Sierra de la Laguna mountains. It’s a small glimpse of what drivers experience during the famed Baja 1000 desert endurance race.
Our view from the residence
It’s worth noting that residences include a dedicated butler during your stay. We were fortunate enough to have Vincent, who knew our entire itinerary and was always there with a golf cart to give us rides to activities and dinners and was a wealth of information about the ecology of the area and what is planning for the development.

Superyacht Cup Palma 2022 Set to Kickstart the Summer
April 12, 2022 By: Marie Cullen
Mark your calendar for June 29 through July 2 if you’re an avid sailor. The Superyacht Cup Palma 2022 edition has already attracted regular racers, as well as some newcomers. Crews and owners are eager to enjoy the traditionally excellent conditions, vie for bragging rights, and of course share camaraderie in Mallorca’s capital.
One of the returning racers is the sailing superyacht Ganesha, which finished second last year in her class. Her captain and crew are striving to improve this year. “Superyacht Cup Palma is always a geat event,” says Capt. Alex Pamment. “We can’t wait for the end of June to come around!”
Ganesha is among an expected dozen or so competitors, in fact, according to Superyacht Cup Palma 2022 organizers. Already confirmed, for instance, are three J Class yachts, each of which raced previously. Specifically, they are Ranger, Topaz, and Velsheda. They compete on their own course, too, on June 29. Additionally, expect to see Kiboko Tres, whose owner raced in 2015 and 2016 aboard her predecessor, Kiboko Dos. Then there’s Huckleberry, who received the North Sails Boat of the Day award back in 2019.
Due to the differences among the sailing superyachts, the Superyacht Cup Palma 2022 will offer three categories of racing once again. These categories are the Performance Class, for (naturally) high-performance yachts; the non-spinnaker Corinthian Class; and the Superyacht Class. The Real Club Nautico de Palma is providing race-management input, as well as serving as the host venue.
Also hosting some of the activities: the St. Regis Mardavall Mallorca Resort. Owners will head there for an exclusive dinner. Details on the date, as well as the captains’ welcome cocktail, are on the website.
“There is a great energy, emerging around this year’s event, and optimism,” Kate Branagh, the race’s event director, states. “The level of interest has been inspiring.”
On a related note, race organizers say the recent announcement that Barcelona will host the America’s Cup in 2024 is raising Palma’s, and the regatta’s, profile.
