Ryan Harrison, a Partner of KPS Mid-Cap Investments, said, “We are excited to make this significant investment in Princess Yachts, a leading company in the luxury global yachting industry with an iconic brand grounded in British tradition, a remarkable and growing product range and worldwide reputation for quality and innovation.  KPS’ investment will accelerate Princess’ growth trajectory and fund numerous investments for its future.  We look forward to working with Princess’ existing stockholders, Chief Executive Officer Antony Sheriff, the senior leadership team and the talented employee base at Princess Yachts.”

Princess Yachts Make for a Pleasurable Cruising & Ownership Experience

Aug 4, 2022 | Magazine , News , Princess Yachts | 0 comments

“I’ve never bought a new Princess,” begins Craig Kushner. Although he prefaced the discussion with these six words, we soon learned that his experiences with Princess Yachts —like the experiences of new Princess owners—is unsurpassed in every expectation. For Craig and his wife Hilary, it all started in 2003 with a photograph of a new Princess V50. “I fell in love with that boat at first glance,” Craig recalls. “The look was so sexy, and I loved it!”

The Kushner’s previous Princess, a V50

The following year, the Kushners fulfilled their dream and purchased a one year old Princess V50 (at the time, a Viking Sport Cruisers model). After a decade of enjoyment aboard their V50 and flawless support through the years, they sold it in 2014 and purchased a different motoryacht. All the while, Hilary missed owning a Princess and eventually it became clear they needed to find another to call their own. Tapping the expertise of Bluewater’s Chuck Meyers , the Kushners spent a portion of 2020 looking for their next Princess yacht.

“When searching for our next Princess, I thought sixty feet would be the largest boat I could handle as a captain,” Craig explains. Although one deal fell through, Meyers helped lead the Kushners to a late model 60’ flybridge owned by his clients who were building a new, larger Princess. “We closed on our Princess at the end of 2020 and Chuck Meyers was great throughout the whole process,” Craig explains. “He’s not a salesman, he’s an honest person who is extremely knowledgeable about the boats. He never sold to us, he let us buy.”

After taking delivery of their Princess, they had the name applied to the transom: Kush . Craig laughs, “I get a lot of funny looks and questions about the name of our boat because these days it’s slang for marijuana.” As it turns out, Kush is simply a long-running nickname that began with Craig’s father when he was a young man. “It all started with my dad, and for many years my nickname was Kush as well. Then it was passed on to the kids and I stopped answering to Kush because it became too confusing.”

As for the boat, “It was in phenomenal condition—better than advertised,” Craig recounts.

“Princess is the ‘gold standard’ and when you own one, new or used, what you get from Princess America is fantastic!”

Craig and Hilary use their Princess as a floating condo, splitting their year in half between Annapolis and Palm Beach. When in Florida, they enjoy cruising to the Keys and marina hopping, while their time in Annapolis is spent traveling the Chesapeake. Craig jokes, “Our boat has autopilot from Annapolis to St. Michaels every single week.” Their favorite restaurant is The Crab Claw, situated near the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum on the Miles River, which they visit more than once per week. “There’s only two slips I can fit our Princess 60 in at the dock and one is reserved for me, and one is reserved for my friend who also pilots a larger motoryacht,” Craig explains. “If they know we’re coming, they keep those slips open just for us.” The Kushners also enjoy their biannual cruise along the coast from Maryland to Florida, stopping in at all the great ports along the way, including Charleston, Hilton Head, Fernandina Beach, St. Augustine and more. “I thought my limit as an owner-operator would be 60-feet, but after a few months, I realize we can go bigger,” Craig explains. The Princess is very easy to maneuver and a joy to pilot for short and long distances. “In a year or two, we’ll be looking between 68 and 72-feet for our next Princess,” Craig says.

Craig and Hilary are looking forward to their next Princess as they continue enjoying their current, knowing that no matter what may come, Bluewater Yacht Sales , Chuck Meyers , and Princess Yachts America are all there and ready to ensure the best ownership experience possible, now and into the future.

Catamaran motor yacht on the ocean at sunny day

Britain's biggest luxury yacht-builder is being put up for sale even as a string of the world's most valuable private vessels are being seized by governments clamping down on their sanctioned Russian owners.

Sky News has learnt that L Catterton, the private equity group, has hired bankers at Macquarie to find a buyer for Plymouth-based Princess Yachts .

A formal process is yet to get under way but is expected in the coming months, according to City sources.

Princess's valuation was unclear on Friday, although one insider indicated that it was unlikely to represent one of L Catterton's most successful exits.

The business was founded in 1965, and distributes through a 50-strong global network.

It has been backed by L Catterton and its predecessor entity since 2008, making it a lengthy period of ownership by the standards of private equity backers.

Princess's boats have become symbols of luxury among the world's super-rich, although in recent months a number of yachts have been seized by authorities around the world as they seek to prevent sanctioned Russians from retaining their most prized assets.

Princess Yachts has been taken over by a major American private equity firm in a deal which will take the Plymouth company “to the next level”. New York-headquartered KPS Capital Partners has entered into an agreement to acquire a controlling interest in Princess Yachts (Holdings) Ltd, and said the investment will accelerate the company’s growth and innovation.

Existing shareholders will retain ownership in the company under the deal. Completion of the transaction is expected by the end of March.

KPS runs a family of investment funds with more than US$14.4bn of assets under management. For more than 30 years it has been acquiring manufacturing businesses and its current portfolio includes component maker Autokiniton, light vehicle manufacturer AM General, Briggs and Stratton engines, battery maker C&D Technologies, and plant-based foods business Primient.

Antony Sheriff, chief executive of Princess Yachts, said the deal will enable the Plymouth firm, the UK’s largest manufacturer of luxury yachts, to grow and bring out new models. He said: “We are thrilled to partner with KPS for this exciting new chapter for Princess Yachts. KPS and the Princess Yachts team are deeply committed to investing in the company’s future while continuing to further strengthen our portfolio of best-in-class motor yachts.

“With a current order book nearing a record US$1bn and many model lines sold into 2025, we have never been in a stronger commercial position. Together with KPS’ tremendous track record of manufacturing excellence and investing in leading brands, we are now positioned to take Princess Yachts to the next level of industry leadership in quality and innovation. Under KPS’ ownership, we will accelerate a range of growth and operational initiatives to build upon our long and successful history.”

KPS’ portfolio of companies already generates total annual revenues of about US$22bn, operates 232 manufacturing facilities in 27 countries and combined has about 53,000 employees. KPS said it creates value “almost exclusively through operational and performance improvement”.

Ryan Harrison, a partner of KPS Mid-Cap Investments, said: “We are excited to make this significant investment in Princess Yachts, a leading company in the luxury global yachting industry with an iconic brand grounded in British tradition, a remarkable and growing product range, and world-wide reputation for quality and innovation. KPS’ investment will accelerate Princess’ growth trajectory and fund numerous investments for its future. We look forward to working with Princess’ existing stockholders, chief executive Antony Sheriff, the senior leadership team, and the talented employee base at Princess Yachts.”

Princess Yachts was acquired by L Capital 2 FCPR, an investment group co-sponsored by LVMH (Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton) and Groupe Arnault in 2008. In January 2016, L Capital merged with Catterton to become L Catterton, now recognised as the largest global consumer-focused investment firm.

Last year L Catterton hired bankers at Macquarie to find a buyer for Princess Yachts . At the time, Princess Yachts told PlymouthLive it was looking to start discussions with potential investors to provide financial support needed to build a huge new factory at its Devonport operation.

In late 2021, PlymouthLive revealed Princess Yachts wants to build another factory in Plymouth’s freeport area in the South Yard so it can produce more vessels, employ more people and fulfil a US$1bn order book. The company was also undergoing a sales boost, now selling more than 300 boats annually.

Princess Y95

It’s hard to believe it’s that time of year again, but boat show season is about to begin. The 2023 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show is fast approaching, so make sure to get your travel and hotels booked so you can come see the latest from Princess Yachts.

Making its North American Premiere at the show, the Y95 is designed for top-notch performance and stunning aesthetics. It boasts an advanced hull design for exceptional seakeeping. With ample storage, a versatile bathing platform, and the option for a beach club, your water experience is maximized. The sleek exterior showcases the largest hull windows on any Princess yacht, while spacious interiors rival larger vessels.

Making its FLIBS debut, the X80 features a ‘super flybridge,’ offering over 30% more interior space compared to traditional flybridge yachts of its size. It can have a main deck master stateroom with a private sundeck. It’s built for adventure, with an option for a long-range 2,325-gallon tank. The X80’s distinctive profile includes taller bulwarks, topsides, and an enclosed wheelhouse. The generous use of glazing floods the main deck with natural light, and below decks, there are 4 en-suite cabins, including a full-beam master stateroom. Additionally, it offers crew quarters for 3. The X80 redefines life onboard for a yacht of its size.

In addition to these exciting premieres, Princess Yachts will also be displaying the F50, F55, and Y85.  The F50 offers a superb on-water experience with a strong focus on space and performance. Designed for seamless indoor-outdoor living, the saloon includes a convertible U-shaped sofa and dining table for 6, while the foredeck features a luxurious sun pad. The flybridge offers ample seating, helm stations on both levels, and the yacht accommodates up to six guests in three beautifully appointed cabins with abundant natural light and versatile berths.

The F55 offers luxurious space and an elegant exterior profile combined with clever interior layout solutions. Expansive hull windows flood the interior with light, creating a sense of constant motion. The F55 offers both refinement and performance, featuring an architecturally inspired interior with spacious cabins, en-suites, and flexible guest arrangements.

The all-new Y85 showcases contemporary design with an elegant profile and a modern interior. Its flybridge offers an enticing outdoor entertainment space with a large dining area, well-equipped wet bar, and a spacious aft sun pad while the single-level main deck provides ample entertaining space. Below deck, it accommodates up to eight guests across four en-suite cabins, including a full-beam master suite, a VIP cabin, and two additional cabins. The Y85 is a must-see, embodying the unmistakable Princess style.

World’s coolest boats: Why the Princess V52 is the original ice queen

  • Top stories

Each month we pick out an iconic boat that can lay claim to the title of world’s coolest boat. This month, we take a closer look at the original Princess V52...

In the 1970s, Princess Yachts and Sunseeker were two British leisure boat brands clearly defined by their product ranges.

Princess was the sensible one, building a worthy range of flybridge boats , whereas Sunseeker curated a slightly more maverick image, making low, sleek high-performance open sportscruisers that might lack the volume but made up for it with dazzling style and the promise of high performance.

It took until the mid-1980s before both manufacturers started eying up the competition and the lines started to get blurred.

Princess launched the 286 Riviera, an open sportscruiser that trod lightly on the toes of Sunseeker’s Portofino 31 but offered a little more internal comfort; Sunseeker launched its first flybridge boat, the Jamaican 35, that brushed gently against the Princess 35 but offered slightly more performance via its slimmer and more easily driven hull.

Princess’s Riviera range of open-cockpit boats grew to include models like the excellent shaftdrive 36 Riviera and the flagship 46 Riviera, but sensible, practical and unshowy vessels were always at the forefront.

Princess V52 yacht tour: Is this sportscruiser the ultimate two-cabin boat?

Princess f55 or sunseeker manhattan 55 we help you decide: head-to-head yacht tour.

Then, in 1994, Princess launched the V Class with two new boats that broke the mould: the Princess V39 and the Princess V52. Gone were the plain-Jane white hulls with double knuckles, in were smooth shapely topsides in dark blue or maroon (although white was still available).

The old-fashioned stainless steel windscreen frames were history, replaced by chunky white GRP, and radar arches jutted aggressively forward. The V52 was, by some margin, the largest and coolest open boat Princess had ever made. It didn’t just throw down the gauntlet in Sunseeker’s back garden, it lobbed an entire hand grenade into it.

On board, a large tender garage with built-in crane was hidden beneath a massive aft sunpad while down below, high-gloss burr maple or mahogany was referred to as a ‘ superyacht finish’. And under the cockpit floor, two meaty MAN D2866 LE401 600hp engines gave it the bite to match the bark.

Top speed was mid-30 knots or more, and the rev band of the low-revving diesels was so narrow that it would do 6 knots at tick-over. On one engine! Snick the other into gear and you’d be closing on 8 knots.

That issue was solved by fitting larger MAN D2848 LE403 800hp engines as these would run on a single cylinder bank at low revs. Despite such overt styling, Princess ensured the V52 was a wide, comfortable and practical boat with three cabins and two heads as well as a huge saloon on the lower deck.

The V series was marketed with the rather pointed slogan ‘Performance without compromise’ and the Princess V52 became the coolest kid at the 1994 Southampton Boat Show . Job done.
