The biggest Classic Yacht Regatta in Greece was excellently organized by the Yacht Club of Greece between June 30 th – July 3 rd for the 6 th consecutive year, under the auspices of the Municipality of Spetses , with the support of the Spetses Yacht Club and the Poseidonion Grand Hotel . Spetses Classic Yacht Regatta 2016 was completed with the participation of 70 classic and traditional boats and hundreds of visitors, establishing itself as not just the most popular regatta in Greece, but as one of the most important regattas in Mediterranean . It was a ceremony of sailing and the art of wood shipbuilding.

The astonishing races of the classic boats, the schooners and the lateens, gave spectators the opportunity to watch unique competition and beautiful classic boats coming from every corner of Greece and abroad. This year’s regatta welcomed two classic yachts for the 1st time in Greece, Puritan and Skylark , which were built in 1930 and 1937 respectively. It is important to note that this year the number of participating boats was increased by 20%, proudly promoting Greece worldwide. At the same time, Glaramara and Baccara , which were participating for the 6th year in a row, won the 3rd and the 1st place at the Classic Boats races. Challenge Race was held, for the 2 nd consecutive year, one day before the official start of the races, and gave the opportunity to four pairs of boats to compete in a fun race.

The main Awards Ceremony , which took place at the Bouboulina’s Museum for the first time, included special awards for each category, given by the race’s prize supporters . The prize supporter of the Classic Boats Category was the vice-president of the World Sailing, George Andreadis . The prize supporter of the Schooner Category was an anonymous donor that dedicated the award in memory of John Z. Goulandris , while the prize supporter in the Lateens Category was Dr. Stefanos Chandakas and his daughter Alexandra .

The ceremony was honored by the presence of the president of World Sailing, Carlo Croce , who participated in the race with the traditional boat “ Afroessa ”. During the ceremony, the president of the Yacht Club of Greece, Alexandros Papadogonnas , stated: “ The Spetses Classic Yacht Regatta, condenses the values of the Yacht Club of Greece. The constant development and the success of this race, has established it in the Mediterranean and reflects the hard work and the absorption we have given, as well as the evolution of the sea tourism ”.

A highlight of the event was the moment when Lascaris Foundation , gave the Gold Sponsor Award . The award was shared to 3 sailors, who will represent Greece in Rio 2016 Olympics: Takis Mantis & Pavlos Kagialis in the 470 class and Giannis Mitakis in FINN , who honorably participated in the regatta. Throughout the awards ceremony, the President of the Foundation , Mrs. Georgia Lascari and Mr. Nikos Lascaris , wished the Greek athletes to live such great moments in Brazil, having been awarded Olympic Medals this time! Lascaris Foundation aims on fully supporting the sports and athletic achievements in Greece, as well as reinforcing the Greek entrepreneurship and the sections of health and education.

The majestic Poseidonion Grand Hotel , fully supporting the race from the very first year, was the Concours d’ Elegance Prize Supporter for the best preserved and authentic boats, this year as well. The hotel’s CEO, Mr. Antonis Vordonis , gave these prestigious awards to: Puritan for the Traditional Boats Category, Marida for the Schooners Category and Christina for the Lateens Category. In addition, IWC Schaffhausen , the official Timekeeper of the Regatta, offered to the crew of Puritan an impressive Aquatimer Automatic IWC watch from their special diving collection.

Porsche Hellas and Motodynamics S.A. were Sponsors of the races, with the new hybrid Porsche Cayenne S , a high performance SUV car – like every Porsche – with low fuel consumption and low emissions. The new hybrid Porsche Cayenne S , was on display at the Poseidonion square during the races.

Official Timekeeper for a 2 nd consecutive year was the Swiss watch manufacturer of haute horlogerie, IWC Schaffhausen , famous for its passion for innovation and technical ingenuity.

SCYR’s new Drinks Sponsor was METAXA , the Original Greek Spirit that since 1888 has spread its sails and travels around the world, constantly revealing new aspects of its multidimensional character. Gaining strength from its traditional values to express new trends in the world of cocktails , METAXA got inspired by the island of Spetses and the colors of the Greek sun, and offered three specially designed cocktails ( Sun Fashioned , Spetses Sunset and Spirit of the Sun ) at all the cocktail-parties of the event. The combination of these new flavors with an excellent live music concert added a unique flair to the parties, which admittedly were very successful and participants had the time of their lives.

Suncare Sponsor of the races was La Roche-Posay , protecting the sailors – who are exposed to the sun for many hours – with Anthelios XL UltraLight Fluid SPF 50+ as well as everyone else urging us to save our skin and the skin of our loved ones with the #SaveYourSkin campaign.

SEBAGO , which emphasizes on the respect for the art of hand-made shoes, offered docksides pairs to the members of the organizing committee and ran an online contest for more pairs of Docksides for the SCYR visitors and participants during the four-day event, and SALTY BAG , the top Greek brand that made the skippers’ bags by decommissioned sails and took part in the races with the traditional Greek boat, “Stratis” , impressing everyone with the amazing skirts sewed by spinnakers(!).

The luxury hotels Amanzoe Resort and Nikki Beach Resort & Spa , which hosted the kick-off party of SCYR 2016 on the impressive Pearl Rooftop of the hotel one day before the official start of the races, as well as Technohull , a leading company in the field of luxury speedboats and specializing in high performance RIBs (Rigid Inflatable Boats), which provided its impressive boats for the races’ needs, were also Supporters of Spetses Classic Yacht Regatta 2016 .

Foundation of Anargyrios & Korgialenios School of Spetses , Spetses Trade Association , Bouboulina’s Museum and the Traditional Boat Association of Greece were the contributors of the race.

Communication Lab and Dr. Marina-Lida Coutarelli were in charge of the Press Office and Sponsors management for a 6 th consecutive year.

10 Best Things To Do in Spetses – Greek Island of Captains

My name is Michael and welcome to my guide on the best things to do Spetses. I grew up in Spetses and spend most of the year on this beautiful island . It’s one of those places you can come and go all year round.

I’m passionate about technology and gadgets, especially drones and drone photography . Spetses has the perfect landscape for drone photography as the island includes beaches, lots of greenery, ports and picturesque roofs.

Spetses is a small island of just 22.2 km². You only need a couple of days to explore the whole island. This destination is famous for its hidden beaches, paths leading up to mountains, beach bars and spectacular sunset spots.

Spetses

History of Spetses: The Island of Captains

Spetses is known as ‘The Island of Captains’. It has a wealth of history, both in recent years and in the past. In fact, it was the first island to revolt against the Ottomans who occupied Greece from the mid-15th century until 1821. Merchants and captains led the way in assisting the revolution.

One of those leading figures was Laskarina Bouboulina . She is considered one of the great local heroines of Spetses for her epic contribution to the Greek War of Independence. Many streets in Greece are named after her.

The second wave of recent history began in the 20th century when visitors consisting of royal families, international jet-setters and famous celebrities all started travelling to Spetses. They enjoyed the seclusion and privacy of this island in comparison to other popular Greek Islands like Mykonos .

Spetses

10 Best Things To Do in Spetses

Spetses is located just a stone’s throw away from Peloponnese. The island is famous for its historic old town, rolling hills, pine forests and secluded beaches. There is a lot to see and do here – especially for those who love history, art and a good party. Below are my top ten things to do in Spetses.

Verdant Pine Forest

1. Visit the Fascinating Bouboulina Museum

Bouboulina Museum is one of two local museums in Spetses dedicated to the female heroine of the Greek War of Independence of 1821. Until recently, Laskarina Bouboulina had the honour of being the only female admiral in world naval history. She is extremely popular throughout Greece.

Learn all about Bouboulina’s life in the beautiful garden area of the museum. A guide will narrate her story in Greek which can be translated into 21 languages including English, French and Spanish. Afterwards, you will head inside the mansion to learn more about this historic figure.

2. Relax at the Pebbly Ligoneri Beach

Ligoneri Beach is one of the best beaches in Spetses. It’s located near a small cluster of villas which tend to be occupied by Athenians as summer homes. The beach itself is pebbly with a little bit of sand and a rocky seabed. There is also a shaded area produced by a large pine tree.

You can spend the day here swimming in the sea, reading a book in the shade under the pine tree and having a picnic in the sun. At the far end of the beach you will also find a diving platform. This is the perfect spot to practice your diving skills. Ligoneri is a popular beach with locals.

3. Swim at the Peaceful Kouzounos Beach

This beautiful beach is located 1.5km from Agia Marina on the way to Agii Anargyri. Here you will find a quiet beach with crystal-clear waters and colourful pebbles. Take a dip in the refreshing sea and relax on the shore. For those without a motorbike, you can arrive by bus from Agios Mamas.

Spetses

4. Discover Bekiris Cave on Anargiri Beach

Anargiri Beach is the longest beach in Spetses. It offers sunbeds and water sports on the uninhabited side of the island. You can access the beach by motorbike, bus ride or take a boat from the main port of Spetses. This stunning beach is also famous for the impressive Bekiris Cave .

The cave is accessible by following a 150m long path that leads to a small entrance between rocks. You can also swim into the cave through a sea entrance which ends up on a tiny sandy beach. A natural spring inside the cave offers a beautiful sight of hanging stalactites from the cave roof.

Lots of myths surround the story of Bekiris Cave. One includes a myth about mermaids. However, these stories can actually be traced to seals who visit the cave in winter and leave tracks from their tails on the floor.

5. Celebrate the Spectacular Armata Festival

The second week of September is a big deal in Spetses as it celebrates the island’s stand against the Ottoman Fleet during the Greek War of Independence. Spetses prominent role in this war is celebrated with week-long events that end in a spectacular fireworks display.

These events include traditional dances, theatrical performances, various exhibitions and re-enactments of historic battles. One of those key battles was the naval battle which occurred on September 8th of 1822. Dramatisations of this victory are on full display with the use of real ships!

6. Enjoy the Various Sporting Events of Spetses

Spetses Marathon and Spetses Triathlon are the two major sporting events that attract athletes from Greece and all over the world. The island is accessible by road all around and it’s ideal for running, cycling and swimming (close proximity to the mainland allows for open sea swimming).

These events normally take place in the spring and autumn seasons. If you are a sports person then that would be the ideal time for you to visit Spetses to either watch the events or participate in them yourself. It certainly adds a different dimension to your vacation in the Greek Islands.

7. Go Sailing with Spetses Yacht Club

Go sailing with the Spetses Yacht Club in a renovated Rhodes 19 – a 19-foot-long (5.8m) sailboat designed by Philip Rhodes. This is a genuine sailing experience on one of the most beautiful boats in the world. Up to three people plus the skipper can join each individual sailing trip.

Rhodes 19 Boat

8. Have a Cold Beer or Cocktail on Kaiki Beach

Kaika Beach is also known as “College Beach” as it’s located by Anargyrios College. This organised beach has crystal-clear water and beautiful natural surroundings. Here you’ll find sunbeds, umbrellas and a lively bar that is active in summer. Enjoy cold beers and cocktails with your swim!

9. Party with Young People at Vrelos Beach

Vrelos Beach is a party beach popular with young people. This small natural bay has a club atmosphere and vibrant social scene. There are plenty of hammocks to relax in and a beach bar to order some drinks. They even have live music which adds to the overall atmosphere of the beach.

10. Revel in the Literary History of Spetses

My last recommendation is for all the literary fans out there. Whoever has come across the best-selling book The Magus by John Fowles will know about an imaginary island called Phraxos. Try not to give away the secret but Phraxos is actually based on the island of Spetses in Greece.

The author lived here in the mid-20th century while teaching at the Anargiros and Korgialenios College (a famous boarding school). Perhaps give Agia Paraskevi Beach a visit while you’re reading the book and you might be able to decipher the scenes from The Magus.

Spetses

Best Restaurants and Bars of Spetses

Another highlight of Spetses is the food. Fish is a big part of the cuisine here. The best place to enjoy fresh fish and seafood is undoubtedly Tarsanas Fish Tavern located in the heart of the Old Harbour opposite the traditional boat shipyards. This family run business is a real treat!

To start the day, though, head to Roussos Cafe for coffee and breakfast located in the new port. If you’re feeling super fancy or nostalgic you can always stop in at Poseidonion Grand Hotel for brunch. Later in the evening, visit Votsalo Cocktail Bar for a refreshing cocktail.

Then head to Spetsa Bar! Here you can find the purest drinks, no cocktails, music from the 60s till the 80s only on CDs, no Wi-Fi and, as advertised, probably the bar with the worst view on the island. What makes it so great? Costa, the 70 year old bartender who has run the bar since 1987.

Important Tips for your Visit to Spetses

Accessing Spetses by land is much easier from Athens as you drive down past Corinth, Epidavros, Porto Heli and Costa. From Costa you take a short ferry ride across the sea to Spetses. Boats from The Port of Piraeus are also an option but driving down relaxes your time schedule a bit.

Remember though, cars for private use are not permitted on the island. You will have to park on the mainland. On Spetses you can walk, rent a motorbike or electric bike, and even ride a traditional horse and carriage!

Winding Roads

There are plenty of fantastic hotels and airbnbs to choose from on the island, as well as smaller studios and larger villas. Your accommodation really comes down to your budget and how far out you want to be located from the centre of town. Thanks for reading my guide on Spetses!

Guide to Spetses

A playground for Greek tycoons and the global elite

A hot spot for wealthy Greeks and discerning world travellers, the island of Spetses has enough old-world glamour, nautical charm and scenic beauty to challenge the most exclusive charter regions in the Mediterranean .

An air of quiet elegance encompasses Spetses, with hotels, bars and restaurants ranging from luxe to modest – all embracing a dash of Greek-island boho. Located in the Saronic Gulf, it is one of the Saronic Islands  as well as triangle of beautiful islands to include Nafplion, Hydra, Monemvasia, Elafonisos, Ermioni and Porto Heli that are being dubbed the new Greek Riviera.

A historic and important maritime centre of Greece , you can reach Spetses by luxury charter yacht in around two-and-a-half hours from Athens or Piraeus. Welcoming you into the port is the century-old Poseidonion Grand Hotel which has played host to silver screen sirens such as Marilyn Monroe, Ingrid Bergman and Elizabeth Taylor. Now, like the town itself, the hotel has undergone a modern refresh to offer a luxurious setting for Athenian weekenders and the global superyacht set, providing a majestic backdrop to the superyachts that occupy the docks.

As you venture further through the winding streets, past the fish market and the stylish boutiques, the surroundings become classically picturesque and the cobbled lanes are lined with traditional shops, barbers and tavernas. There are a number of iconic and culturally significant statues dotted around the island including a unique metal mermaid that commands the Old Port and most famously the effigy of historic Greek heroin Bouboulina who watches over the main port.

Punctuating the coast of Spetses are an array of both sandy and pebbled beaches as well as secluded coves and bays which are perfect for swimming, snorkelling and watersports. The season starts around Easter time, when the island comes alive with celebrations, and carries on until mid-October. During September an annual re-enactment (Armata) of the island's greatest naval victory in 1822 takes place followed by a two-week festival which culminates in a sea battle and the burning of an Ottoman warship to the backdrop of a spectacular firework display.

Yacht racing in spetses with a ‘salty bag’.

Project Name

Mid June saw Greece ’s sailing aficionados come together for the ‘ Spetses Classic Yacht Race 2013 ’ for the third consecutive year on the island of Spetses, off the Peloponnesian coast. Organised by the Yacht Club of Greece, the event successfully came to a close on the 16th of June after three not-so-windy but mind-blowing days . Yatzer attended the event to witness 65 participants from all over the country competing in the following categories: a) Classic Yachts – divided into Vintage (prior to 1939), Classic (post – 1939) and Spirit of Tradition (yachts - built according to the classical yacht standards), b) Aegean Classic Schooners (locally known as caiques) which raced for the first time in 2011 alongside the Classic Yachts, and c) Lateens.

Although I wasn't exactly an official member of any of the yachts’ crews, I got a bird’s eye view of the ensuing ‘''battle on the sea'' from a small speedboat. The sight of the most renowned classic yachts in Greece set against the beautifully preserved, historic and picturesque Spetses Town with the renowned  Poseidonion Grand Hotel  as the centre piece created my visual cart-postal. The neoclassical mansion which first opened in 1914 by  Sotirios Anargiros , the visionary benefactor who was responsible for much of Spetses’ development closed its doors for a five-year restoration in 2004. Its transformation, completed in 2009, has created not only a five star hotel guaranteeing luxury and relaxation for international jet-setters all year long but a hub of cultural, political and social activities.

Speaking of painstaking restorations, four Greek young entrepreneurs  Stratis Andreadis ,  Panos Varouhas ,  Spyros Daikos  and  Chrysa Halikiopoulou  have come up with the perfect upcycling idea. In answering the simple question '' What happens to yacht’s sails that can no longer be used after the ravages of time and the sea? '' they went on to create a line of handbags made of decommissioned sails. The brand’s name  Salty Bag  was conceived from the objective of giving the sails a second life beyond that of the salty sea. In their new, reincarnated form, the bags begin counting new nautical miles - or just miles - from the Greek island of Corfu where they are created. So after their heroic lives sailing the stormy seas, and witnessing some of the most magical sunsets in the world, they’re now ready to travel with their new owners, some of whom may not have sailed the seas but wouldn't say no to a hard wearing, waterproof companion on their travel adventures. Each bag is accompanied by the story of the sailboat from where the sail hails and a percentage of the proceeds from their sale will go towards supporting the Greek Sailing Team for the  Rio 2016 Olympics .

This weekend in  Spetses  definitely increased my appetite (not that I’m blaming the Poseidonion's chef Christoforos Peskias and his incredible Greek Salad!) . So if you haven't planned your holidays yet, start packing a  Salty Bag  with all your summer essentials and jump on a sailboat. The  Spetses Classic Yacht Race  may have come to an end for this year but  summer in Greece has just begun !
