Spirit was designed and built in an era when good racing performance was tempered by respect for the power of the mighty southern ocean. Spirit of Sydney offers a reasonable level of comfort with heated insulated interior, antarctic specified water maker and hot fresh water showers, however the emphasis is on safety, adventure and hands on experience. The saloon with windows at eye level has a diesel drip heater in-set in the saloon table and offers a cosy social environment, while the aluminium and plexiglass ‘ bomber style’ dodger over the cockpit keeps the crew relatively warm and dry whilst on watch. The large sugar scoop or stern platform is an ideal platform for kayaking, diving or just boarding the zodiac. Spirit of Sydney is based in South America (Ushuaia – Argentina). As well as excellent service in support of expeditions, Spirit offers sailors an exciting opportunity to cruise in one of the most beautiful (and fast!) yachts in the spectacular regions around the southern tip of South America, the Antarctic Peninsula and the sub Antarctic islands including South Georgia.

A native of Australia, Darrel Day, first traveled to Antarctica the summer of 1999 on a mountaineering expedition. Since then he returned every summer and built his life around Antarctica. In 2003 he bought Spirit of Sydney yacht and has been supporting the most amazing expeditions ever since: including documentary makers from Discovery Channel’s Globetrekker, Animal Planet’s “Steve Irwin The Croc Hunter”, an HBOs VICE episode, scientists from Oregon State University Marine Mammals Institute (tagging Humpback Whales), University of British Columbia (Orca study), HBO Munchies (First ever cooking show filmed in the drake) and many others! Other expeditions have included National Geographic photographers, mountaineers, dry suit divers and kayaking expeditions including Andrew  Mc Cauley’s epic sea kayaking expedition in Antarctica. 

Darrel has sailed over 200,000+ nautical miles while supporting over 70 expeditions to Antarctica, as well as 13 to South Georgia. With all this experience gathered in Antarctica over the years, now his company and team have grown, and aside from his expeditions with Spirit of Sydney every season, he is currently managing and consulting within companies like Oceanwide, Cookson’s Adventures, Pelorusx. He designs some of the most incredible Antarctic operations including helicopters, submersibles, superyachts and ski-mountaineering.

Darrel is a leader in his industry, a full voting member of the International Association of Antarctic Tourist Operators (IAATO) and is a longstanding committee member on both the Membership, Yacht and Field Staff Committees.  

With nearly two decades of experience in Antarctica involved in yacht expedition support, permitting, lecturing, expedition staff work, consulting for aviation projects, expedition ships and super yacht voyages Darrel truly enjoys sharing his knowledge of Antarctica with others and working in a field he loves.

Spirit of Sydney Expeditions

Spirit of Sydney, an icon of Australian yachting, was originally designed and built for the 1986 BOC single handed around the world race by America’s Cup winning designer Ben Lexcen. Spirit is an ocean greyhound with real sailing ability and thoroughbred performance, and has been sailing the Southern Ocean and plying Antarctic waters every summer since 1994, having made more than 70 trips to various parts of Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic. Spirit is a tough heavily constructed 60ft aluminium yacht with 6 watertight compartments and an over built sailing rig ready for the southern ocean.

Spirit of Sydney regularly supports expeditions in all parts of Antarctica with groups such as documentary makers from Discovery Channel's Globetrekker, or scientists from Australian Antarctic Division, Oregon State University Marine mammals Institutniversity of British Columbia, as well as television documentaries, like Animal Planets Steve Irwin The Croc Hunter, Bindi the Jungle girl or HBO Vice and many more. Other expeditions have included, National Geographic photographers, mountaineers, dry suit divers and kayaking expeditions including Andrew McCauley’s epic (900km) sea kayaking expedition in Antarctica.
