Saudi businessman’s 377-feet Lurssen superyacht was so magnificent that billionaires started making offers the moment he took delivery of the vessel. Roman Abramovich made an offer so ridiculously high that the sheik immediately sold him his boat after taking just one cruise on it.

Pelorus, the mighty—

With two 3,900kW Wärtsilä V12 engines and four 465kVA alternators, Pelorus is a powerful beast, and that’s an understatement. Adding the pretty to the powerful is the indomitable team of Tim Heywood on exteriors and beachside villa interiors by Terence Disdale.

After Abramovich, the luxury vessel went to his now ex-wife, Irina Abramovich, as part of her divorce settlement, who sold the Lurssen beauty in 2011 for $300 million to tycoon David Geffen. Pelorus was then sold to Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates) for $215 million and finally went to Chinese billionaire Samuel Tak Lee in 2016.

Iconic yachts: Inside the story of Lürssen's 114.5m superyacht Pelorus

The original owner of Pelorus  was a Saudi businessman who already owned a 72 metre motor yacht that he wanted to extend. Designer Tim Heywood was commissioned to investigate this possibility but could not find a really satisfactory result and instead proposed a new yacht of 85 metres. Extra features were added until the overall length reached 114.5 metres, making it the 11th largest yacht in the world at the time.

Easily the largest yacht to be built by Lürssen at the time, she was too big for the parent yard and had to be constructed at the Krogerwerft subsidiary. The word 'yacht' seems hardly appropriate for any vessel over 100 metres in length: Pelorus is clearly a ship in every technical sense. Her two 3,900kW Wärtsilä V12 engines are the kind you might expect to find driving a car ferry, while her four 465kVA alternators could light up a small town.

The huge size of Pelorus made it possible for Heywood to include exceptional features such as the top-deck lido with two swimming pools and the vast sea-level platform that is created by opening the transom. Two helicopter pads are provided, and large doors in the hull side open to reveal a cavernous tender deck containing a wide selection of small boats.

The owner’s suite, which enjoys horizon-to-horizon views, includes a private deck that cannot be overlooked from other parts of the vessel, while, as an example of the ingenious use of opening platforms, one guest suite has an entire wall that lowers to form a verandah.

The hull design is based on the same powerful outline as Carinthia VII , with a high forebody and reverse sheer sweeping down towards the stern, but in this case Heywood added a line that curves down towards the bow and was inspired by the 'armour belt' on HMS Belfast , which he could see from his office window.

The immense task of designing the interior was taken on by Terence Disdale , who created an informal beach house atmosphere using natural materials wherever possible. Many cabins, for instance, use 'distressed planking' as floorboards, though in reality they were specially made from new. While it is difficult to maintain a 'casual' atmosphere in such a large and sophisticated yacht, Disdale's informal style of extreme luxury was brilliantly successful.

After Pelorus  was delivered in 2003, the owner enjoyed one long, glorious cruise and then decided to sell. Perhaps surprisingly, she attracted an immediate waiting list of potential buyers eager to acquire one of the world's most spectacular yachts virtually brand new and ready for use. The top bidder proved to be Roman Abramovich, who made  Pelorus  the first of his ever-expanding fleet of giant yachts.

In May 2011 media mogul David Geffen bought  Pelorus  for an estimated $300 million. It was his second superyacht purchase within seven months, having bought out Larry Ellison's share in R ising Sun in October 2010.

Pelorus is currently listed for sale with Burgess asking €185,000,000 .

Roman Abramovich’s Yacht Fleet Past & Present

Boss Hunting

Say what you want about the elite, but you can’t help but marvel and low-key admire their spending habits when it comes to luxury toys. While Roman Abramovich might only be Russia’s 12th richest man (with a net worth of 9.8 billion USD), he’s undoubtedly the one you’ve heard the most about.

A fortune that began with a toy doll company, Abramovich and his now ex-wife used its success as a catalyst to world domination through everything from oil to consumer goods.

Among his arsenal of past and present superyachts, the billionaire tycoon also owns a private Boeing 767 and Gulfstream G650, while his ex-wife Irina took the Dassault Falcon 900 during their divorce settlement.

The pricetags below of these Roman Abramovich yachts – past and present – are in Australian dollars.

A Complete List of Roman Abramovich’s Yachts

Sussurro – $146 million.

Rumour has it that Sussurro is now owned by his ex-wife by way of a divorce settlement, and is rarely used regardless as it is almost always docked in Antibes.

Roman Abramovich Yachts

ECSTASEA – $154 MILLION

Ecstasea is one of the fastest large yachts around, with an impressive 43,000 horsepower at a length of 86 metres.

LUNA – $386 MILLION

This 115-metre monstrosity boasts dual helipads and was built by Lloyd Werft at Stahlbau Nord Shipyards. The world’s second largest expedition yacht, the LUNA was sold to Abramovich’s friend and Azerbaijani billionaire Farkhad Akhmedov for 240 million Euro in 2014.

PELORUS – $386 MILLION

Clocking in at the same length and a very similar price tag, the Pelorus was built in 2003 by Lurssen and was briefly owned by a Saudi businessman before being sold to Abramovich the year after.

Optimised for long distance cruising, the Pelorus is without a doubt the sleekest of the tycoon’s line-up, with this vessel capable of 6000 nautical miles at 16 knots in a single voyage. Pelorus is now owned by Hong Kong businessman Samuel Tak Lee.

ECLIPSE – $643 MILLION

There’s no way Roman Abramovich could part from his flagship superyacht and the world’s largest by length at 163.5 metres. Known as the 1.5 billion dollar superyacht, Eclipse’s original cost price was realistically no more than 500 million USD.

Built in total secrecy by Blohm + Voss of Hamburg to custom request from Roman, Eclipse sports bulletproof windows, an advanced missile detection system and a provision to escape via submarine located at the bottom end of the yacht. Bond villain gadgets aside, its other amenities are things such as dual swimming pools and 20 jet skis.

A £300million superyacht, once owned by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich and where John Terry honeymooned, is at the centre of an extraordinary row between its billionaire owner and it crew.

The 115 metre mega boat Pelorus is currently docked in the port of Tivat where it has been impounded by the Montenegro authorities.

Its international crew say that they have been sacked and are owed four months’ wages.

However, in the international row, its owner Samathur Li Kin Kan, a Hong Kong based tycoon, accuses them of taking advantage of the Covid pandemic and trying to charge him ‘extortionate’ fees to run the boat in a practise he called ‘price gouging’.

The Pelorus, launched in 2003 after being commissioned by a Saudi businessman, was promptly bought by Russian oligarch Abramovich who had just taken over Chelsea.

Two years later, when the club won the Premier League title, he lent it for a fortnight to the club’s star players John Terry and Frank Lampard as a reward.

Now, port authorities in the Bay of Kotor are carrying out an inspection while a case against its owner has been filed in the country’s Commercial court.

It is understood that the crew are in talks with lawyers at Nautilus which represents the interests of seafarers.

One of the international crew told Mailonline: ‘Things started to unravel on Christmas Eve last year when most of the 35 crew were dismissed and just 10 left on board which is below its minimum manning.

‘Two weeks ago we were told that the vessel was to be left to rot and run out of fuel and that the 10 of us had lost our jobs while being owed over four months’ salary.

‘It is unheard of for this to happen with a yacht such as this which has been owned only by Royalty and billionaires.

‘The owner feels we are objects that can be picked up and thrown away and we understand that there are a string of debts all over Europe that he owes as well as in Montenegro.’

But in a statement released through the law firm Taylor Wessing, Mr Li Kin Kan hit back.

He said: 'The Pelorus has been fully funded throughout the period of ownership by my company, and I consider that it still has more than sufficient funding today.

'However, we have for some years fallen victim to, in my view, significant overcharging by parties dealing with different aspects of the yacht, and this position has worsened substantially since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, with those parties taking advantage of the increasingly difficult circumstances, to increase charges to a level which I believe constitutes price gouging.

‘In addition, I believe the parties involved have sought to unjustifiably and unfairly discredit the running of the Pelorus such that in the current circumstances it cannot reasonably attract and retain sufficiently qualified crew for its minimum manning, without the company accepting their unreasonable and unjustifiable costs.

‘Given this, in order to try to redress the situation, and the actions of the unethical parties involved, I have had no choice but to engage with The Montenegro Government to protect our ownership interest, and the interests of all other bona fide creditors who had been prejudiced by such actions.

‘I believe that justice will be served in due course. I have experience of owning many yachts over decades, and it is clear to me that in the current circumstances within the yachting industry, it is extremely difficult for owners to protect themselves from what I believe to be extortions and price gouging in relation to many aspects of yacht ownership.

‘This is particularly the case at present, when owners are unable to easily access their yachts given the ongoing pandemic and related travelling restrictions; sometimes the only option is to seek legal recourse.’

It is understood that Mr Li Kin Kan took over the running of the ship from his father, Samuel Tak Lee, a property billionaire who owns vast swathes of central London.

According to port authorities in Tivat, the yacht is now undergoing an inspection by the Navigation Safety Inspectorate.

Drasko Loncar, a spokesman for the Montenegro Minisitry of Capital Investments, said: ‘The inspection acted on the report of entities that have claims against the yacht.

‘A record was made within a legal deadline and sent to the captain. According to the law a deadline of 10 days has been set for the correction of irregularities.

‘The procedure in the Commercial court of law is conduct by persons who have claims against the owner of the company.’

He said they were awaiting a statement from the Captain of the yacht. It is a spectacular fall from grace for The Pelorus, once the pride and joy of Abramovich.

He added a second helipad, kept a crew of 44 and would use it to cruise the western Mediterranean in the summer and travel down through the Red Sea in winter.

In 2009 its ownership transferred to Abramovich’s wife Irina in a divorce settlement and she sold it for $300 million to Dreamworks boss David Geffen in 2011.

He sold it to Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the son of the founder of the United Arab Emirtes and its last recorded sale was to Mr Tak Lee in 2016.

That summer it played host to a party featuring MC Hammer and David Guetta. Its current owner Mr Li Kin Kan is also owner of the world’s most expensive car, the Rolls Royce Sweptail, worth $12.8 million.

His family also own five Ferraris and other sports cars but it is their interest in the London property market that truly marks them out as among the world’s super rich.

Their Guernsey-based company Mount Eden Land Limited is the registered owner of the 14 acre Langham Estate in central London.

Last year, Mr Li Kin Kan’s 81-year-old father sold property in the Shaftesbury area of London’s Chinatown for £436 million.

He is estimated to be worth $3.7 billion. Mr Li Kin Kan recently hit the headlines when he took legal action ‘against a robot’ he blamed for losing him $20 million.

He had invested in a ‘computer controlled’ hedge fund after meeting Italian investor Raffaele Costa, dubbed Captain Magic.

Roman Abramovich’s luxury yachts, from Chelsea owner’s new £430m Solaris to the £1BILLION Eclipse

ROMAN ABRAMOVICH certainly doesn't do things in halves.

The Chelsea owner, worth a cool £10bn, was sanctioned by the UK government as part of attempts to crackdown on wealthy Russians with assets in the UK - but what yachts does he own?

Roman Abramovich's new yacht Solaris is currently in development

The Russian, 55, who has faced calls to be barred from owning Chelsea and his £152m home amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine , must love travelling by sea.

He has had a private navy of yachts - with SunSport believing Solaris to be his EIGHTH over the years.

The latest yacht was completed last year and is believed to have cost £430million to build .

A 460ft beast of the sea, it features eight decks, as well as a helicopter pad and was seen cruising the French Riviera last summer.

The yacht was built at the Lloyd Werft shipyard in Bremerhaven, Germany and the shed it was constructed in was larger than Buckingham Palace.

Solaris has 48 cabins, accommodating up to 36 passengers, and a crew of 60 plus and boasts two advanced engines to be the most powerful yacht in the world.

Roman's current superyacht , the Eclipse - with all the work that's been done to it - is said to now be worth £1billion.

Built in 2010, it was completely rebuilt in 2015 to cater for the high-spec needs of a multi-billionaire.

Incredibly, the 553ft Eclipse has its own missile defence system - should it come under attack.

There are 24 guest cabins, two swimming pools, hot tubs, a sauna, and even a nightclub.

It also boasts a cinema, conference room, children's playroom, hair salon, and a mini-submarine that can dive to 50m. Yes, that's right. It's a yacht that boasts its own submarine.

The colossal Eclipse sails into New York harbour

LE GRAND BLEU

Worth £135million, Le Grand Bleu was once Roman's pride and joy.

Twenty guests can stay in luxury onboard, and enjoy it's many amenities.

Astonishingly, as is the theme with these yachts, there are more boats on board.

As well as a 73-foot sailboat, guests can also enjoy taking a 68-foot powerboat for a spin. And there are two more boats in its internal garage on top of that.

It is now owned by Abramovich's friend Eugene Schvidler.

Currently available to buy for £16million, the Sussurro is now over 20 years old.

It was built by Feadship, measures over 163 feet long and boasts six luxury cabins that can house 12 guests.

Rarely used, it has been reported that the Sussorro was given to Roman's ex-wife Irina Malandina, as part of a divorce settlement.

With 15,000 combined horsepower, it is capable of reaching speeds of 46 knots.

Sussorro can reach speeds of up to 46 knots

Valued at around £110million, the Ecstasea is still one of the fastest superyachts around - boasting 43,000 horsepower and measuring 282-feet.

Abramovich was the original owner from 2004, before it was sold to Pakistani businessman Alshair Fiyaz in 2009.

There's room for 14 guests, can be staffed by a crew of 25, and can be reached by helicopter, which can park on one of two helipads.

The Ecstasea suffered damage in 2019 when it clipped the Simpson Bay Bridge in the Caribbean island of St Maarten.

So that's what £270million gets you.

Built in 2003, the 377-foot long Pelorus was briefly owned by a Saudi Arabian businessman before Abramovich got his hands on it in 2004.

A year later, he lent it to Chelsea legends John Terry and Frank Lampard for two weeks as a bonus for helping the club win Roman's first Premier League as owner.

Then in 2007 he allowed Terry and his wife Toni to enjoy their honeymoon on board.

However, it was also reportedly handed to Irina in the divorce settlement, who sold it to American film exec David Geffen in 2011.

Abramovich got his hands on the Pelorus in 2004

Currently the second largest expedition yacht in the world, the Luna was delivered to Roman in 2010.

It boats 10 VIP cabins, that are 100 square metres each, as well as a 20-metre outdoor pool.

Like the Eclipse, it also has an anti-missile system, as well as bulletproof windows.

Roman Abramovich's Pelorus yacht in St.Petersburg | by dyadyavasya

Roman Abramovich's Pelorus yacht in St.Petersburg

Pelorus is the world's eleventh largest private yacht at 377 feet 3 inches (115 metres) in length, with a price tag of us-$300 million (254 millione euro). she was built at the lürssen yard in bremen, germany to the design of tim heywood and was launched in 2003.   she was briefly owned by a miles businessman who sold her to russian billionaire roman abramovich the following year. abramovich had her refitted to his own requirements by blohm & voss. this included the addition of a second helicopter pad forward, four new zero-speed stabilisers and modifications to the exhaust, mast and stern. abramovich also owns ecstasea, and gave away le grand bleu to friend eugene shvidler.   pelorus is powered by two 5,500-hp wärtsilä 12v 26 ( dugattyús motor ) engines which will do a maximum 19 knots but often cruises between 12 and 14 knots. details about the interiors are scant, as abramovich is protective of his family's privacy and highly security conscious. the interiors are reportedly well appointed but simple. they were designed by terence disdale and some interior detail is shown in a presentation on their website.   she has a number of tenders on board and a garage full of 'toys' including jet skis and wave runners. a full time crew of up to 46 people lives aboard all year long and a large security contingent comes and leaves with the family.   pelorus will often be found cruising around the western mediterranean during the summers and commonly ventures down through the suez for the winters.   in 2005 abramovich lent pelorus to frank lampard and john terry for two weeks as a bonus for being the two best players at his english football club chelsea f.c. the previous season. after john terry married his fiancee toni poole at blenheim palace on 15 june 2007, they had a two week honeymoon on pelorus in the mediterranean.
