2022 Lincoln Navigator First Drive Review: An Updated Land Yacht Coming for Cadillac’s Ass

Refreshed with sleeker styling, the 2022 Navigator’s big news is the addition of Lincoln’s hands-free driving mode. Spoiler alert: It’s pretty good.

As far as I’m concerned, there are only two American luxury automakers vying for the title of Greatest of All Time. In recent years, it’s been pretty back and forth between the Cadillac Escalade and the Lincoln Navigator , but ever since the former has been optioned with the world-class semi-autonomous driver-assistance system, Super Cruise , the Ford-backed Navi has had some catching up to do. But now that the 2022 Lincoln Navigator

will offer Dearborn’s version of hands-free driving—something rather unfortunately named ActiveGlide —it’s time to see if Lincoln can take back the crown.

Besides a mild facelift and some interior upgrades, Lincoln was smart not to mess with the current Navigator’s already-winning formula, just improved it where it could. It’s a fine line to walk, for sure, but the resulting Navigator is truly deserving of the phrase “refreshed.”

  • Quick take: With a slightly sharpened-up exterior and the new availability of ActiveGlide, Lincoln didn’t mess with what already made the Navigator great. It just improved what was already there.
  • Score: 8.5/10

Semi-Familiar Face

Shaking off the old and stodgy image when the current, fourth-generation debuted at the end of 2017, the Lincoln Navigator emerged with contemporary looks, a sumptuous interior that’d give anything from across the pond a run for its money, and an ass-hauling engine and transmission combination that made it drive like a low-flying private jet.

New for the 2022 facelift is a larger, 13.2-inch high-definition center stack screen, a slightly reworked front grille shape, slimmer headlights, a simplified lower front facia, and new 3D taillights. I’d always thought the rear of the Navigator was its weakest design point and that’s been fixed with this refresh. What stays are the 10-speed automatic and the twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 that produces 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque—10 hp down from outgoing Navigator.

message-editor%2F1646314832293-18navigatorl-bl-destination_08_hr.jpg

This is because, according to a company rep, Lincoln’s engineers added some extra powertrain technology (such as an electric grade booster). They also prioritized the car’s low-end torque, quietness, driveability, and increased efficiency. After making sure the car could do all that, the engine wound up producing slightly less hp than in the previous iteration. You can’t tell at all from the driver’s seat, though, so put it out of your mind.

Two new trims also join the Chalet and Yacht Club schemes you can get with your top-tier Black Label Navigator: Central Park (which comes with black walnut interior wood trim and green leather, à la the test vehicle) and Invitation (which comes with Khaya interior wood trim). Both wood trims feature very beautifully laser-etched detailing. The second-row seats can be optioned with dual entertainment monitors, as well as massage capabilities.

Finally, the 2022 Navigator will be the first Lincoln to come with ActiveGlide, the automaker’s hands-free, advanced adaptive cruise control. How is it different from the Blue Cruise technology you’d find in other Ford cars , you ask? It’s not. Someone just decided to give it a different name because apparently you gotta keep the Lincoln and Ford products distinct.

An Old Friend

Much of what I remember—and loved—about the Navigator from the week I spent with one in back in 2019 carries over to the facelift.

If you’ve never driven one, here’s the first thing you need to know. The Navigator weighs, like, three tons. It is goddamn massive. Nowhere will you ever escape that sensation of mass. And not only is the truck massive, but it is also tall. You feel imposing while driving it. It dwarfs passing crossovers; an Acura MDX’s beltline was even with my navel. This makes for wonderful forward visibility, though, like being a sentry atop a watchtower.

The second thing you need to know is everything else the Navigator is equipped with—its engine, brakes, transmission, steering, suspension—feel specially designed to handle that mass. Not just handle, but to minimize it, wield it in a powerful way.

message-editor%2F1646315271517-2022lincolnnavigator_chromacaviarblacklabel_27.jpg

In comfort mode, things are as palatially plush as anything this side of a Rolls. The ride is masterfully unruffled over even the worst of bumps. You barely hear the engine above the lowest revs. Gear changes come smoothly and seamlessly. The brakes never grab hard— gasp , can you even imagine grabby brakes—and operating them feels like a cushy push beneath your foot.

For the driver, the infotainment system is clear and easy to use, with hard buttons for radio volume and climate temperature. The new screen is noticeably improved in picture quality. The 30-way configurable driver’s seat—which, crucially, also includes pedal adjustments—brought me closer to my most optimal driving position than ever before. I was free to sit further back, my shins not brushing the underside of the steering column for once, and the steering wheel nice and far from my face because I could scoot the pedals toward me. There were a truly dizzying number of adjustments to be made; the only complaint I have is I wish the bottom seat cushion could shorten a bit more to accommodate my stubby femurs. But I’m probably an outlier here and it certainly didn’t make driving the car any less pleasant.

The second-row captain’s chairs offered good legroom and massage capabilities. The optional rear-seat Fire TV entertainment was like wizardry to me—I still remember being floored at the ceiling-mounted DVD player in the family Lexus RX 330 from 2003—but if you’re like me and you suffer from motion sickness, it might be more difficult to benefit from. Finally, the third-row of seats were roomy considering they were third-row seats. But the Navigator’s boxy profile means no weird interior slopes those passengers have to contort themselves around.

message-editor%2F1646316115043-2022lincolnnavigator_kl_16.jpg

Put the truck into sport mode, though—here called Excite—and it turns into one that merely gets to it quickly to one that fuckin’ mobs. If you’ve never been gapped by one of these modern Lincolns, you have no idea. The engine gets louder, the throttle becomes more responsive, the shifts come faster, and the Navigator reaches into the blessed torquiness of its twin-turbocharged V6.

Suddenly at your command are 510 reasons to floor it—the truck wham s forward like an incoherent cannonball. But at speed and along Arizona’s sweeping and wide highways, the Navigator never felt like it was hurtling out of control. It handled the momentum smoothly, and though there was body roll, it wasn’t the out-of-control rollicking kind. You’re just aware you’re driving something very big and all-powerful that also needs to corner once in a while.

One thing I wish Lincoln had addressed in the 2022 Navigator is the steering. It was vague and floaty the last time and it’s vague and floaty this time, too. In normal mode, it felt inconsistently weighted, especially in the turns. Only during sport mode did it feel properly weighted and most consistent.

message-editor%2F1646315484536-2022lincolnnavigator_kl_28.jpg

I’d be lying if I said this wasn’t the mode I used during most of my drive. My gas mileage was probably terrible but why use a hammer when I do the same job with a sledgehammer?

Hey! I'm Gliding Here!

It took all of my concentration not to slip up (heh) and call the car’s advanced driver-assist system “Astroglide” instead of “ActiveGlide” to the Lincoln reps’ faces, but I managed not to, and that’s what matters. Not a fan of the name, though, it must be said!

Much like General Motors’ Super Cruise, ActiveGlide uses a front-facing camera for the road and a driver-monitoring camera (mounted on top of the steering column) to make sure the driver is watching the road in order to provide hands-free driving. The system is available as standard on all Black Label Navigators.

message-editor%2F1646315719890-message-editor_1646315590757-2022lincolnnavigator_manhattangreenblacklabel_22.jpeg

I was only able to spend about 20 minutes on a highway outside of Phoenix, Arizona, while using ActiveGlide and I can report that it ain’t bad. The way it braked and accelerated felt natural and progressive and it maintained lane-centering well. I got cut off by cars in front a couple of times but I had set the follow distance far enough that the Navigator wasn’t forced to do any panic-braking. It can handle stop-and-go traffic, but once the car comes to a complete stop, you have to nudge the throttle to get it moving again. The system takes it from there after that.

But as compared to Super Cruise, this current iteration of ActiveGlide is still a bit lacking.

In those 20 minutes, it shut off about half a dozen times, necessitating me to put my hands back on the wheel. In the hour I spent with Super Cruise on a highway in North Carolina, it didn’t turn off once. Lincoln says ActiveGlide has mapped more than 130,000 miles of North American highways for its compatible, hands-free “Blue Zones.” Meanwhile, Cadillac says it has mapped over 200,000 Super Cruiseable miles in the United States and Canada as of this writing. Finally, unlike Super Cruise, ActiveGlide cannot yet change lanes for you.

message-editor%2F1646315660508-2022lincolnnavigator_kl_26.jpg

But these should be only very fixable bumps in the road. As time goes on, Ford/Lincoln will map more and more highways for ActiveGlide to use. A Lincoln rep confirmed that lane-change capabilities are coming. Both of these things can probably be easily addressed via an over-the-air software update.

For now, even in places that aren’t ActiveGlide-enabled, the car’s existing advanced, adaptive, hands-on cruise control cuts it just fine. The only time the system freaked and shut off without warning was on a 45-mph road and the truck was met with a very sharp bend.

Otherwise, I highly recommend keeping it on for long highway cruises with the massage seats going. It feels almost illegally decadent.

Sustainability

message-editor%2F1646315754412-2022lincolnnavigator_kl_35.jpg

It seems silly to consider something like the Navigator through the lens of sustainability, but Lincoln has made noise about launching an all-electric one at some point in the future, which would be extremely cool. There’s already barely any engine to hear and an electric Navigator would keep that furious power while removing the sensation of gearshifts. Give it a skateboard design, open up the front as a massive trunk, and you’ve got one luxury EV on your hands. Plus, seeing as Lincoln celebrates 2022 as the 100th anniversary of joining the Ford family, you know something future-focused and battery-electric is probably on the way.

I do wish the current Navigator made use of the Aviator 's very excellent hybrid system, though. It would have added even more weight and complexity but the power bump alone would have been worth it.

Value and Verdict

Base Navigators, with an MSRP of $89,745, come with the 10-speed automatic and twin-turbo V6, its power output unchanged when you move up in trims. Other standard features include the pixel projector headlights, heated and ventilated second-row seats, and a suite of safety features. You can equip your Navigator with ActiveGlide and the optional rear-seat entertainment and massage capabilities if you'd like. From there, the price only increases as you option up through different Black Label trims. The Black Label Central Park test car came out to $107,050 MSRP.

message-editor%2F1646315867511-2022lincolnnavigator_kl_29.jpg

You don’t need my expert opinion to see that the Ford Expedition-platform-sharing Lincoln Navigator is pretty expensive. But how is a luxury car that costs more than $100,000 supposed to drive? That’s hard to quantify, but if I could, the new Navi certainly comes close. Being in one is to exist in your own private suite and its powertrain is both modern and awe-inspiring—something I could not say of the Grand Wagoneer . Nothing about the Navigator was lazy.

True, ActiveGlide can use some light updating to get it closer in capability to Super Cruise. But the possibility is there. And this tech combined with what the Lincoln already offered brings the Navigator back to being neck and neck with the Escalade.

What’s next? The Escalade V-Series I guess!

Manta Landsailers

The single-seat WinJammer landsailer and the two-place TwinJammer landsailer are the land yachts that revolutionized landsailing. These wind powered vehicles use the materials and design concepts of ultra-light gliders, Manta has created landsailers so light, yet so rugged and potent. They give high performance landsailing on any hard, flat surface - your local parking lot, beach, dry lake bed , or field. Using the natural free energy of the wind, you can accelerate quickly to over twice the speed of the wind! The current landsailing speed record is 126.1 mph , set March 27th 2009 on the Ivanpah dry lake bed 45 minutes outside of Las Vegas.

Ladsailing with a Manta

The Manta can be set up for landsailing action in 5 minutes. The ultra-lightness is revolutionary because it permits exciting operation even in small areas. The WinJammer weighs just 70 lbs, with a fully battened sail of 45 sq/ft and a turning radius under 6 feet. The TwinJammer weighs 105 lbs, carries 59 sq/ft of sail and has a turning radius of 8.5 feet. The incredible acceleration and maneuverability let them make the most of any site.

This is the stunning new Pininfarina Pura Vision, a luxury electric land yacht

Pininfarina's follow-up to the Battista is this bonkers four-seat luxury EV with rear-hinged doors and much power

Pininfarina Pura Vision electric SUV revealed 2023

In Seventies Top Trumps  land, Pininfarina was one of the kings. As well as clothing virtually every major Ferrari from 1951 until the Prancing Horse took its design destiny in-house in 2011, these guys regularly smashed it out of the park when it came to concept cars. Case in point: the Modulo , which rebodied a Ferrari 512 S endurance racing car as a flying saucer. To this day, it remains the show car to end all show cars, a four-wheeled WTF (not least because using a 512 S as a donor car is majorly punchy).

Now meet the Pura Vision, the follow-up to the Pininfarina Battista . At this point we must remind you that these are the products of Automobili Pininfarina, which is a separate entity to the original carrozzeria . It's effectively a start-up whose goal is to be the world’s leading purveyor of luxury electric cars. Since 2018, a team of 116 has been building and refining the Battista 1,876bhp hypercar, while new CEO Paolo Dellachà, formerly chief product and engineering officer, insists the company’s financials are increasingly robust.

We like the Battista a lot, but the Pura Vision is something else altogether. Car designers will give you chapter and verse on the importance of stance and proportion, but this thing gleefully rips the rule book to shreds. Look how shallow the glasshouse is compared to the body. Check out the Pura Vision’s floating roof. Stare if you dare into its minimalist face and notice the way the cockpit sits within the body. It even has preposterous front and rear ‘suicide’ doors.

It’s also huge, almost six metres long, two metres wide and 1.7m tall, and has the imperious bearing of an automotive super yacht. The nautical parallel is encouraged by design boss Dave Amantea, who says the Pura Vision looks especially like a boat from above. Dave, it should be noted, is also one of the world’s most enthusiastic human beings.

A market research company reckons electric cars will get cheaper by 2027

“The first iteration dates back to 2018. A 40 per cent scale model was presented in 2019, and we wanted to gather, not suggestions as such, but the vibes and understanding of what our customers wanted,” he explains. “We have to bring the customer to the centre of our project. Remember, these guys own everything. They’re probably getting a little bored because they can buy anything they want. This is the most difficult segment to make ‘wow!’ to the people.”

This surely gives Automobili Pininfarina scope, if not total carte blanche, to go a bit nuts. They have delivered. Although its production targets are more ambitious for the quasi-SUV than the Battista – think into the thousands rather than 150 – imagine you’re a cash rich tech bro (or sister) on the hunt for something electrified but outrageous. The Pura Vision manages to look very Silicon Valley while channelling Pininfarina’s history. The lounge doors are a nod to 1956’s Lancia Florida, the roof – currently being co-developed with a Swiss specialist – echoes the Modulo, and the body section where the doors meet is a conscious link to the Battista. A central ‘biscotto’ supports the curved single-piece side windows, which are integral to the doors. The headlights are hidden and use L.E.S.S nanofibre technology; the fibres measure less than one millimetre thick.

It sits on 23 inch wheels, the minimum diameter on a vehicle with proportions as bonkers as these, its tyres wearing an elegant white pinstripe. The rear tapers in beautifully, another aspect best appreciated from above – a vantage point Dave the designer actively encourages. A ring of anodised aluminium runs around the car’s beltline.

Nor is it overcooked. Amantea says that simplicity underpins everything, partly because the purer the surfaces the greater the contrast that can be achieved when clients start spending big in the bespoke department. The body on the show car is finished in Bianco Sestriere Gloss paint, with powerful contrasting exposed carbon fibre on the body’s lower elements.

“Details are vital. You need the unexpected element that pops out to give you the emotion,” Amantea says. “You have to amaze the customer, balance the classic effect with the futurism. The idea of finding beauty in imperfection, it’s in our bones. It’s about finding the perfect emotion not the perfect alignment of line.”

The interior is equally fabulous, contains four ‘floating’ captain’s chairs, and aims for an airier sensation than the exterior suggests. The central display rises into view when needed, disappears out of view when not. Each head-rest has a speaker to create individual sound zones. Charcoal leather on the dashboard and door tops creates an ‘accent band’ that mirrors the aluminium one on the outside. The centre console, upper seatbacks and headlining combine 30 per cent wool and 70 per cent recycled polyester. There’s a fridge hidden between the rear seats.

Automobili Pininfarina calls the Pura Vision an ‘e-LUV’ – electric luxury utility vehicle – an abbreviation that might get lost in translation anywhere within the M62. We love it all the same, for its colossal ambition and emotive cab-rear design. No news yet on what platform it might use or the extent of its electric powertrain. A deal is being done on the former, with the latter being shared with the Battista. So it will have the performance to back up its presence.

Buying used: Luxurious ‘land yachts’ for under $12,000

This article was published more than 9 years ago. Some information may no longer be current.

land yacht car price

2013 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid

Comparing something with a luxury item usually denotes an equally high level of quality: "It's like the Rolex of calculators" or "It's the caviar of cream puffs." You get the idea.

But when you compare a car to a yacht, that's something altogether different. For a long while, North American-made luxury cars were just that: coddling and cavernous and full of plastic leather and plastic wood, but also floating, seasick-inducing rides with vague steering and the inabilities to turn without listing to the opposite direction – earning them the nickname "land yachts." And while well-to-do pensioners and grey-haired executives might have appreciated moseying about in them, those who yearned for an exciting drive looked across the shores to the sharp luxury cars coming from Germany.

But times have changed. Domestic auto makers have realized that you can have comfort and control, even at high speed and in the corners. There's been a resurgence at Lincoln, Cadillac and even Buick, which are all producing cars that, while they may not be better than the German juggernauts, are nipping at their heels.

So, there's no need to feel bad about wanting a domestic luxury car any more. And there's no need to feel bad about not wanting to pay more than $12,000, either.

What better way to instantly make a brand more exciting than by bringing in a German car? The latest Buick Regal is based on architecture used by Opel, General Motors' German outfit, and first appeared in this iteration in 2011, the same year you may find them for sale at this price, if you're patient. While it still isn't exactly considered exciting, especially with its base 2.4-litre, 182-horsepower engine, it's worlds away from the last Buick to use the Regal name. In sporting fashion, they were even offered with a six-speed manual gearbox. Plus, there was only one recall for this model, for a seat adjuster, and it's had a decent history of reliability.

Again, not exactly a barn-burner, but the MKZ has kicked away the "land yacht" status for Lincoln. Available in front-drive or all-wheel drive, you can find these anywhere from 2008-2011. You'll enjoy a distinctive look, and the well-appointed cabin has high-quality materials, including real wood. The handling may not be as crisp as you might like, especially with its overboosted, vague steering, and it may not be the quickest pony in the stable, but it does have a firm yet forgiving ride and a quiet cabin. The MKZ also has just one recall – this one for floor mats – and it is considered a "good bet" by Consumer Reports.

Indispensable

This car returned the name Cadillac to an adjective: the CTS is the Cadillac of domestic luxury cars, and it's also a perennial addition to Car and Driver's Top 10 lists and has twice won the Motor Trend Car of the Year award. It really turned Cadillac around when it was introduced in 2002, but you can find it from its first redesign in 2008 up to around 2010 for our prices. Its sharp, aggressive exterior is like nothing else in its class, while the interior rivals the best of its generation for style, fit and finish. And the handling? Honed on the famed Nuerburgring, no less, which has delivered knife-edge steering, little understeer and overall predictable control. A series of powerful V-6 engines are available in either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Again, even a manual transmission was available. While relatively reliable, it does fall under that GM recall for ignition switches, as well as another for a heated windshield washer module. But get those sorted and you have a world-class luxury sport sedan. And in the unlikely event you find the CTS-V models in this price range – the ones with a 556 hp V-8 under the hood – then don't hesitate.

Questionable

The Buick Lucerne is not so much the big brother of the Regal as it is its Geritol-popping grandfather, one who might rant on about the good old days of Detroit from a cushioned rocking chair. If you need a mushy ride, sloth-like acceleration and room for your walker, then this land yacht is for you.

What's It Like To Drive A Land Yacht?

We like to talk sports cars and other fun-to-drive lightweights, but let's not forget America's great modern addition to the car world: the land yacht. We know and love how big they are, but what are they like to drive?

While we were discussing cars that everyone should be forced to drive , Liberte for le Jetstar! chimed in with a description of what it's like to drive his (surprise) Oldsmobile Jetstar 88.

I've been driving a 1964 Oldsmobile 88 for 5 years now as a daily driver. Here's what I've learned: Plan ahead when you're braking. Four-wheel drums will stop you relatively quickly...once. After that, it's fade-o-rama. The steering is indeed nautical, but with over-assisted power steering and a surprisingly decent turning radius, low-speed maneuvering isn't too hard. I've done three-point turns on two-lane roads. Reverse is your friend. I usually back into parking spots; it's easier to get in and waaaaaaaaaaaaaay easier to pull out. J-turns are extremely useful, not just for scaring your passengers and bystanders, but for turning around quickly. Don't be afraid of potholes and curbs. With tall tires, a tough-ass suspension with massive amounts of travel, and cushy springs, driving over deep ruts and speed bumps is almost fun. Keep your foot in it if you get into mud/sand. Drive on the interstate a lot. On inner-city expressways, you can easily clip along at 90 and get a feel for what these cars are really meant to do. We all hear about the 30 dead hooker-sized trunks, but there's truth in the jokes. Especially in an older car with no frilly carpeting, it's really like having a little watertight truck bed. Just vacuum out the fur needles and oil every once in a while. You can make it fast pretty easily. Through technique alone, I was able to bring my 1/4 mile time down from 21.4 to 17.685. That's with a 5.7 liter engine, two-barrel carburetor, a two-speed transmission, an open 3.08 differential, and a 4,200 lb. car. In short, forget about gas mileage and buy one, especially anything from 1961-1967. You won't regret it.

Have you driven a truly massive American sedan? An equally-huge Russian sedan, perhaps? What tips do you have for driving one of these old beasts?

The Audi Landjet looks set to take four-ringed brand into the future of motoring, and here’s everything we know about the next-generation Audi electric car:

According to a Top Gear report dated September 30, 2022, the Audi grandsphere concept, unveiled in 2021, is the precursor to the highly anticipated Audi Landjet model. Oliver Hoffmann, BoM member responsible for Technical Development, Audi, told the British publication that the show car “gives a clear view to the first Artemis car.” Hoffmann went on to state that Audi will use both exterior and interior design of the open-top sphere concept for the dealer-bound EV.

Audi grandsphere exterior live image

The Audi grandsphere is a low-slung, highly aerodynamic, avant-garde four-door. It’s no ordinary sedan by any means. It blends the characteristics of a grand tourer and a shooting brake as well. And interestingly, it’s almost impossible to figure that out if you’re looking at it from the front three quarters. The designers have discretely packaged the dramatic proportions at the rear.

The Audi grandsphere concept has a striking appearance at the front with the concave hexagonal Singleframe and the narrow headlights that look like focused eyes. On the sides, the chief design element is the dynamically sloping arc of the roofline akin to Audi Sportback models. Also worth noting are the 23-inch wheels inspired by the Audi Avus from the 1990s. As for the rear, the boat tail looks like a piece of art, and would be the talking point if translated into production.

Audi grandsphere interior cabin seats

The real highlight of the Audi grandsphere is its futuristic interior. In fact, getting the interior right was so important in this case that Audi designed the concept from the inside out. The company is reimagining the interior of its cars with the trio of sphere concepts (Skysphere, Grandsphere, and Urbansphere) for the future when autonomous driving will be the new normal.

With reversed rear doors and no B-pillars, the grandsphere concept gives a grand welcome to its occupants, and in no time, the sense of spaciousness, opulence, and future forwardness starts reeling in. The 2+2 seater provides the most attractions for the passengers in the front seats, not in the rear seats like traditional sedans. It’s ready for Level 4 autonomous driving, on enabling which the steering wheel and pedals disappear. There’s no traditional dashboard either, and effectively, the car becomes a spacious first-class lounge.

The Audi Landjet should be a revolutionary product at Audi, and that’s exactly how Marc Lichte, Head of Design, Audi, described the project while speaking to caranddriver.com in December 2020. At Volkswagen Group’s Power Day event in March 2021, Markus Duesmann, CEO, Audi, had hinted that the development of the dealer-bound Audi Landjet concept (the Audi grandsphere) will begin shortly.

After almost nine months, we have now reached an important project milestone and successfully completed the concept phase for the first model based on the Artemis. We are now starting serial development of this project. Markus Duesmann, CEO, Audi, in March 2021 (Volkswagen Group Power Day)

Neither an ‘A’ nor a ‘Q’ model

In an interview with Wirtschafts Woche in January 2021, Duesmann discussed the branding of the Landjet. He said that “the first from the new Artemis e-car business unit,” internally called Audi Landjet, will belong to a “new vehicle category.” It will be neither a large sedan positioned above the Audi A8 (and thus not an Audi A9) nor a large SUV positioned above the Audi Q7 . It’s not an “A or Q” series car, Duesmann confirmed.

Traditional grille

Audi grandsphere front cropped

While all developments so far indicate an unconventional design for the Audi Landjet, some things are likely to be traditional. For instance, the front-end of the car will likely feature a Singleframe grille. Singleframe is a signature design element of Audi, and it won’t go away despite the fact that EVs don’t need large grilles

The German automaker has said that the Singleframe grille will appear on even self-driving Audi models, MotorTrend reported on July 19, 2021. The large front grille is as crucial to aesthetics as functionality, perhaps even more so in the EV era where designs are changing drastically with the flexibility that electric powertrains provide. It will continue being a part of the “electric face,” as the company’s designers refer to the front-end of Audi EVs.

New materials

Norbert Weber, head of Interior Design, Audi, has suggested that the company will use alternative interior materials that are easy on both environment and animals in its upcoming EVs. Speaking to CarBuzz , he said that the company is developing vegan materials and considering surrogate leather. Soon, Audi models will have new materials, textures, and fabrics, the design chief added.

Specifications

According to a report Automobilwoche released on December 5, 2022, an ‘SSP 61’ platform, a version of the Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), will underpin Audi Artemis models. Previously, during Volkswagen Group’s New Auto strategy announcement, Duesmann confirmed mixed usage of PPE and SSP elements as well as a unified battery cell format.

With the Audi Artemis model, we will be spearheading major modules of the SSP starting in 2025. It symbolizes the transition from the PPE platform to the SSP. And with E3 2.0 and the new unified battery cell format, it already brings an important part of the SSP into serious production from 2026 onwards. Markus Duesmann, CEO, Audi (Volkswagen Group New Auto strategy 2021)

Audi PPE Audi Landjet specs

Duesmann indicated at Volkswagen Group’s Power Day event that the Audi Landjet will debut the parent company’s unified battery cell format, which offers the best conditions for the eventual transition to solid-state battery technology. He said:

The model (Artemis) will play a key role in its respective model series. Among other things, it will be the spearhead of our electronic platform. This first model based on Artemis will also be the first one to use a new unified battery cell format. Markus Duesmann, CEO, Audi (Volkswagen Group Power Day 2021)

At the Audi Annual Media Conference 2022 on March 17, 2022, Oliver Hoffmann reaffirmed that the Audi Artemis model will be Volkswagen Group’s first EV to feature battery cells built with unified technology.

In the Group we also opted for a streamlined, harmonized cell technology and the Artemis project, which customers will see in 2025, this harmonized cell format will be applied for the first time in a Group vehicle. Audi has a pioneering role in that, and it also ties in with this unified technology in terms of achieving a volume effect as well. Oliver Hoffmann, BoM member – Technical Development, Audi (Audi Annual Media Conference 2022 on March 17, 2022)

Audi grandsphere side profile

By 2030, the SSP will cover a bigger volume than the PPE and the MEB put together. Volkswagen Group wants to sell more than 40 million vehicles based on the SSP over its lifetime. Duesmann said at the New Auto strategy announcement event that the rollout of the new mechatronics platform and the related reduction in complexity will be faster than ever before.

Battery & Motor

The grandsphere concept offers clues on what Audi has in mind for its new electric flagship and next-gen born-EV models. The grandsphere has two electric motors, one on the front axle and the other on the rear, generating 530 kW (710 hp) of combined power and 960 Nm (708 lb.-ft.) of combined torque. Feeding these high-output motors is a 120 kWh battery pack that can provide a range of more than 750 km (466 miles) when driving efficiently. This would be in the ballpark of the Mercedes EQS sedan which does 770 km (478 miles) in the WLTP metric.

The system voltage is double the norm – 800 volts, so rapid or ultra-fast charging is possible. The maximum DC charging rate is 270 kW, and it allows charging from 5 to 80% in less than 25 minutes. Just ten minutes of charging can provide a range of more than 300 km (186 miles).

Dedicated charging network

Dedicated Audi electric car charging hub

Audi is rolling out a high-power charging (HPC) network across Europe that is exclusive to its customers. The company opened a pilot HPC outlet with six reservable charging points with up to 320 kW in Nuremberg, Germany, in 2022. A second compact pilot site is coming up in Zurich, Switzerland by December 2022, followed by more sites in Salzburg and Berlin in Germany. The company’s home market will get additional charging stations in 2023 and 2024. These would be accessible to customers of the Audi Landjet.

New vehicle software architecture

The Audi Artemis will debut a new-generation vehicle software architecture called E³ 2.0, and CARIAD will be responsible for the development of the same. Dirk Hilgenberg, CEO, CARIAD, announced this development at Volkswagen Group’s New Auto strategy announcement event. He said:

We will integrate our stack 2.0 in Audi’s Artemis project for the first time in 2025. Dirk Hilgenberg, CEO, CARIAD (Volkswagen Group New Auto strategy 2021)

CARIAD business model

With CARIAD, we are fully committed to developing the leading automotive software stack in the industry. We are moving towards a synergetic business model. Most of the software-related R&D costs of the brand have been shifted to CARIAD, which will be reported as a standalone entity in the future. The CARIAD business model foresees a significant upfront investment phase of about 2 to 2.5 billion Euros per year. In the income phase, CARIAD will receive licensable fees paid by the brands or paid by potential third parties for the software use. This already started with the rollout of the ID family architecture. Arno Antlitz, CFO, Volkswagen Group (Volkswagen Group New Auto strategy 2021)

Duesmann talked about the benefits of the E³ 2.0 software architecture at the New Auto strategy announcement event. He said:

When it comes to the advantages and performance of the SSP, E3 2.0 is probably the best example. Especially E³ 2.0 as one of the high-value modules will be the enabler for a growing portfolio of software services. Through this electronic architecture, we will be able to provide new functionalities quickly and efficiently to our customers across the group and we will realize significant economies of scale. Markus Duesmann, CEO, Audi (Volkswagen Group New Auto strategy 2021)

Level 3 & Level 4 autonomous driving capability

VW and Bosch have joined hands to develop the software required to build Level 2+ and Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities for VW Group’s future cars, such as the Artemis project, according to an Automotive News report dated January 26, 2022. Bosch will get the marketing rights in the agreement, and VW will use Bosch’s AOS operating system for autonomous driving.

CARIAD CEO Dirk Hilgenberg told journalists on January 25, 2022, that the Bosch-VW partnership will help Audi catch up with the Artemis Project. Hilgenberg said that even though the brands will start work on Level 2+ and Level 3 technologies, the Artemis will also be Level 4 ready.

Level 2+ and Level 3 autonomous driving require considerable driver intervention and are not fully autonomous. However, Level 4 autonomous driving is a ‘High Automation’ level, where systems do not require inputs from the driver but their functions are limited to some areas—such as in a parking lot or on highways. The driver needs to take control when the vehicle leaves the defined areas, like when it drives into town.

Germany’s federal cabinet has passed the draft for fully autonomous driving, which would serve as the model for other EU countries. Mercedes-Benz already offers Level 3 autonomous driving in the country, as an optional package, with the S-Class. The Audi Landjet will be technically ready for Level 4 autonomous driving. In Level 4 on the highway, the driver would “no longer need to operate the car,” and so, he/she would “no longer have to be able to reach the steering wheel and the touchscreens” with hands all the time,” Lichte said.

Volkswagen Group has allocated the Audi Artemis project production to Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ Hannover plant. The German factory will manufacture a slew of BEVs in the future.

Hannover would entirely change with the ID. Buzz . Launched next year, we are entering the BEV world. The most interesting German premium car, the Artemis, will be built in Hannover as well. In addition, we are expanding our body manufacturing for a new model of Bentley. With the MOIA shuttles and the ID. Buzz AD, this site will be spearheading autonomous driving. Hannover will be a technology driver for the entire group. Dr. Herbert Diess, ex-CEO, Volkswagen Group (Supervisory Board meeting on December 9, 2021)

Release Date

Originally, Audi’s plan was to make the Artemis electric car available to customers in 2024. Various external and internal factors have officially delayed the release date to the second half of the decade.

For a few years now, Volkswagen Group has been announcing new software platforms and autonomous driving functions for its future electric cars, especially those originally scheduled for around 2025. However, these planned groundbreaking innovations are repeatedly pushing back launches, especially those from Audi and Porsche.

According to an Automobilwoche report dated December 5, 2022, the originally conceived Audi Artemis is dead. Oliver Blume, the CEO of Volkswagen Group (and also Porsche), has “pulled the plug” on the former prestigious project, the German publication said. Volkswagen Group hasn’t confirmed this rumor, but Blume has scheduled a new software strategy announcement on December 15, 2022, during which he could share an update on this matter.

For now, it’s best not to pin your hopes on the Audi Artemis electric car. It will probably go on sale closer to 2027 and the final car might not be as radical as Duesmann and other executives were pitching it back in 2020.

Previously, according to a report Automobilwoche published on July 10, 2022, Audi won’t conduct the launch until the end of 2026, perhaps even 2027. Investors, dealers, and prospective customers would surely be disappointed, but the German automaker has come up with an interim solution.

Audi Artemis VW Trinity Audi Apollon release date

Automobilwoche claimed in the July 2022 report that Audi will launch “a slimmed-down version” of the originally planned model (that will now arrive in 2026 or 2027) with a “higher body shape” to fulfill its promise of releasing an efficient electric car from Artemis by the middle of the decade. Internally called ‘Audi Landyacht,’ this model won’t be as advanced with respect to autonomous driving capabilities, which could mean that it won’t support Level 4 hands-free driving, at least not at launch. Instead of Software 2.0, it’ll settle for Software 1.2.

Audi to focus on luxury models

Audi has confirmed that there would be no successor to the Q2, and the carmaker is not going ahead with developing a new A1. In early 2022, Duesmann told German business newspaper Handelsblatt that the VW Group has redefined the roles of its brands, and Audi has been realigned as a premium carmaker. As such, Audi is limiting its model range downward while expanding upward with cars like the Q8 e-tron, Artemis and Apollon .

Audi activesphere concept

The Audi activesphere concept is the fourth and final member of the Audi sphere family of concept cars. Like the other three EV models introduced progressively since August 2021, it has a unique character designed as per the needs of people with an active lifestyle.

Audi activesphere concept front three quarter teaser

The activesphere concept is a soft off-roader that blends a poised two-door coupe with a few traits of an SUV, such as high ground clearance, black fender flares, knobby tires, etc. The show car flaunts an aggressive face with ultra-slim, angular headlights, an athletic side profile with oversized, protruding wheels, and a taut tail section. The finesse of a coupe is present all around, too. A long, low hood slopes down all the way to the front. The roofline, which is similarly low, swoops down to the short trunk lid. We’ll know more when Audi reveals the concept car in early 2023.

TopElectricSUV says

With some of Audi’s most futuristic technologies for drive components, in-cabin electronics, comfort features, and driver assistance systems, the Audi Landjet promises to be a groundbreaking product. Although it won’t be a sports car, this is likely to be the most exciting Audi to come out since the 2008 R8.

  • A car manufacturer wants to promote its electric vehicles to environmentally conscious users living in the city after office hours. The advertising is presented on a page with related content (such as an article on climate change actions) after 6:30 p.m. to users whose non-precise location suggests that they are in an urban zone.
  • A large producer of watercolour paints wants to carry out an online advertising campaign for its latest watercolour range, diversifying its audience to reach as many amateur and professional artists as possible and avoiding showing the ad next to mismatched content (for instance, articles about how to paint your house). The number of times that the ad has been presented to you is detected and limited, to avoid presenting it too often.
  • If you read several articles about the best bike accessories to buy, this information could be used to create a profile about your interest in bike accessories. Such a profile may be used or improved later on, on the same or a different website or app to present you with advertising for a particular bike accessory brand. If you also look at a configurator for a vehicle on a luxury car manufacturer website, this information could be combined with your interest in bikes to refine your profile and make an assumption that you are interested in luxury cycling gear.
  • An apparel company wishes to promote its new line of high-end baby clothes. It gets in touch with an agency that has a network of clients with high income customers (such as high-end supermarkets) and asks the agency to create profiles of young parents or couples who can be assumed to be wealthy and to have a new child, so that these can later be used to present advertising within partner apps based on those profiles.
  • An online retailer wants to advertise a limited sale on running shoes. It wants to target advertising to users who previously looked at running shoes on its mobile app. Tracking technologies might be used to recognise that you have previously used the mobile app to consult running shoes, in order to present you with the corresponding advertisement on the app.
  • A profile created for personalised advertising in relation to a person having searched for bike accessories on a website can be used to present the relevant advertisement for bike accessories on a mobile app of another organisation.
  • You read several articles on how to build a treehouse on a social media platform. This information might be added to a profile to mark your interest in content related to outdoors as well as do-it-yourself guides (with the objective of allowing the personalisation of content, so that for example you are presented with more blog posts and articles on treehouses and wood cabins in the future).
  • You have viewed three videos on space exploration across different TV apps. An unrelated news platform with which you have had no contact builds a profile based on that viewing behaviour, marking space exploration as a topic of possible interest for other videos.
  • You read articles on vegetarian food on a social media platform and then use the cooking app of an unrelated company. The profile built about you on the social media platform will be used to present you vegetarian recipes on the welcome screen of the cooking app.
  • You have viewed three videos about rowing across different websites. An unrelated video sharing platform will recommend five other videos on rowing that may be of interest to you when you use your TV app, based on a profile built about you when you visited those different websites to watch online videos.
  • You have clicked on an advertisement about a “black Friday” discount by an online shop on the website of a publisher and purchased a product. Your click will be linked to this purchase. Your interaction and that of other users will be measured to know how many clicks on the ad led to a purchase.
  • You are one of very few to have clicked on an advertisement about an “international appreciation day” discount by an online gift shop within the app of a publisher. The publisher wants to have reports to understand how often a specific ad placement within the app, and notably the “international appreciation day” ad, has been viewed or clicked by you and other users, in order to help the publisher and its partners (such as agencies) optimise ad placements.
  • You have read a blog post about hiking on a mobile app of a publisher and followed a link to a recommended and related post. Your interactions will be recorded as showing that the initial hiking post was useful to you and that it was successful in interesting you in the related post. This will be measured to know whether to produce more posts on hiking in the future and where to place them on the home screen of the mobile app.
  • You were presented a video on fashion trends, but you and several other users stopped watching after 30 seconds. This information is then used to evaluate the right length of future videos on fashion trends.
  • The owner of an online bookstore wants commercial reporting showing the proportion of visitors who consulted and left its site without buying, or consulted and bought the last celebrity autobiography of the month, as well as the average age and the male/female distribution of each category. Data relating to your navigation on its site and to your personal characteristics is then used and combined with other such data to produce these statistics.
  • An advertiser wants to better understand the type of audience interacting with its adverts. It calls upon a research institute to compare the characteristics of users who interacted with the ad with typical attributes of users of similar platforms, across different devices. This comparison reveals to the advertiser that its ad audience is mainly accessing the adverts through mobile devices and is likely in the 45-60 age range.
  • A technology platform working with a social media provider notices a growth in mobile app users, and sees based on their profiles that many of them are connecting through mobile connections. It uses a new technology to deliver ads that are formatted for mobile devices and that are low-bandwidth, to improve their performance.
  • An advertiser is looking for a way to display ads on a new type of consumer device. It collects information regarding the way users interact with this new kind of device to determine whether it can build a new mechanism for displaying advertising on this type of device.
  • A travel magazine has published an article on its website about the new online courses proposed by a language school, to improve travelling experiences abroad. The school’s blog posts are inserted directly at the bottom of the page, and selected on the basis of your non-precise location (for instance, blog posts explaining the course curriculum for different languages than the language of the country you are situated in).
  • A sports news mobile app has started a new section of articles covering the most recent football games. Each article includes videos hosted by a separate streaming platform showcasing the highlights of each match. If you fast-forward a video, this information may be used to select a shorter video to play next.
  • An advertising intermediary delivers ads from various advertisers to its network of partnering websites. It notices a large increase in clicks on ads relating to one advertiser, and uses data regarding the source of the clicks to determine that 80% of the clicks come from bots rather than humans.
  • Clicking on a link in an article might normally send you to another page or part of the article. To achieve this, 1°) your browser sends a request to a server linked to the website, 2°) the server answers back (“here is the article you asked for”), using technical information automatically included in the request sent by your device, to properly display the information / images that are part of the article you asked for. Technically, such exchange of information is necessary to deliver the content that appears on your screen.

This clean, elegant, and very original 1964 Buick LeSabre sedan is a great example of the no-nonsense styling of the period, and to be honest, it has an undeniable appeal that still works today. Make no mistake, this is a big car, but the clean, purposeful styling masks its sheer size. Buicks were expensive machines and part of that was a lot of sheetmetal to demonstrate that you'd well and truly made it. The handsome LeSabre styling offers an upright greenhouse on a slender body, like a 9/8 scale Impala sedan, a look that really works well. The color is pretty close to Coral Mist, a factory offering in 1964, and just about the only part of this car that's a little extroverted. In a field of staid blue, gray, and green Buicks, this one will truly stand out and it really is quite handsome. It has likely been repainted at some point in its life and the finish still has a great shine that could easily be bumped up a notch by a talented hobbyist. The chrome is very good and the long strip of trim that runs down the flanks remains in excellent shape. Given how well all four doors fit, we're also confident that this car has never been seriously wounded. The brightly upholstered interior is a bit extroverted for Buick, but since it's almost entirely original, we're willing to forgive it. The seat covers are that cool mix of simple patterns and funky fabrics that worked so well in the '60s and you can see what they meant by "full-sized comfort." The gauges are in excellent shape, arranged in two large round pods ahead of the driver, and the steering wheel is remarkably well preserved. The carpets are a little discolored but it would be a mistake to replace them, and all the bright trim on the dash shines up nicely. A later AM/FM radio has been installed in the dash, but other than that, the interior is almost exactly the way Buick intended. There's cavernous storage space in the trunk, which is outfitted with traditional mouse fur fabric and a full-sized spare up on its own shelf. Buick's famous 300 cubic inch all-aluminum V8 was revolutionary in the early '60s, and survived into the 21st century under the hoods of Land Rovers. In 1964, it made 200 horsepower and a rather stout 355 pounds of torque, and probably had the best power-to-weight ratio in the industry. The engine bay is very nicely detailed, looking as if it's been restored rather than simply maintained, and it's the highlight of the entire car. It starts easily and runs smoothly, pulling the big sedan around without working hard. Power steering and brakes are welcome additions on this big cruiser, and thanks to a correct transverse muffler, it has a pleasant V8 burble that's suitably muted for a Buick. The underside is quite clean and with a 2-speed automatic transmission and highway-friendly gears out back, this is a car practically designed for your next family vacation. Original wheel covers live inside a set of 7.10-15 bias-ply tires that accurately replicate the original driving experience. Affordable, stylish, and rather unusual, this neat Buick will bring you into the hobby in a big way without breaking the bank. Clean, sleek, and in the case of this 1965 Calais hardtop, subtle and elegant. There's no question as to what this car is and from any angle it says that you've finally arrived. For the money, this car represents a lot of luxury and style that you probably can't get anywhere else. Park this next to, say, a comparable Lincoln of the period and the Lincoln looks downright frumpy while the Cadillac looks modern and low. It was repainted a few years ago in its original Aspen White and while it looks decent, a professional cut and buff would work wonders on this big coupe. With it you also get super straight bodywork that looks like it has never needed major surgery and with the long side trim and fender skirts, straight bodywork is critical. Cadillacs were always famous for their chrome, and yes, there's plenty here to keep shiny, all of it in good original condition including the front bumper and cool rear taillight housings with white lenses that illuminate red when you hit the brakes. With a little TLC, this car could be outstanding. The all-original interior might be showing a few signs of age, particularly otn he driver's seat, but I don't know if I'd be in a rush to replace it. Instead, take a good look at that cool textured upholstery and how cool it would be if you could just stich it up and keep it a high-grade survivor. The slender steering wheel frames a wide Cadillac-style instrument panel with lots of shiny trim to give it a very upscale look. And while the Calais was technically the "entry level" Cadillac, there's nothing low-rent about the quality of the materials or the elegant design. Options include factory A/C plus power windows and seat, so there's really nothing entry level about it. The door panels are in very good condition, as is the back seat, and the carpets are protected by a set of Cadillac-logo floor mats that have probably been there for decades. And yes, there's a massive trunk that's highly original and carries what might very well be the original spare tire. Cadillac's 429 cubic inch V8 made a stout 340 horsepower and moves the big coupe with the kind of effortless ease that you'd expect from a major luxury car like this. It's not detailed for show under the hood but it is quite clean with lots of signs of regular maintenance and as a result it's easy to start, has a smooth idle, and cruises through traffic like a great white shark. Recent service items include a new power brake booster so stops are smooth and confidence-inspiring. There's also a TH400 3-speed automatic transmission, which was used for the first time in Cadillacs in 1965, and it powers a rear end big enough to look at home under a 1-ton truck. The underside is quite original but shows signs of a life outside the snowy, salty northeast and the single exhaust system offers a new muffler that sounds mellow and smooth, just the way a Cadillac should. 235/75/15 whitewall radials are fitted with original hubcaps that give the big Caddy a very understated look. Just watch, these cars are going to be hot. How can they not? Great looks, plenty of power, and a sleek attitude that is just the epitome of cool. Vehicle Review Vehicle Information ?Overview ?Introduction ?Walkaround ?Driving Impression ?Interior ?Summary Luxurious and capable, the ultimate Range Rover. The Range Rover is Land Rover's most prestigious offering, a luxury sport utility vehicle with a long history of quality craftsmanship and legendary "go anywhere" off-road prowess. The five-passenger Range Rover is available in two trim levels: HSE and Supercharged. The HSE is powered by a 375-hp 5.0-liter naturally-aspirated V8 engine, while the Supercharged trim boasts a 510-hp 5.0-liter supercharged V8. Both powerplants feature direct fuel injection and are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with CommandShift manual mode; full-time four-wheel drive with Land Rover's acclaimed "Terrain Response" system and an electronic air suspension help tackle a wide range of off-road conditions. Standard equipment on HSE trims includes a power sunroof, 19-inch aluminum wheels, bi-xenon headlights, LED tail lamps, heated leather seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, hard drive-based navigation system, satellite radio, Bluetooth wireless connectivity and a portable audio interface with USB and iPod integration. Supercharged trims are further outfitted with 20-inch wheels, cooled front seats and upgraded interior trim elements. Safety features include seven airbags, anti-lock brakes with brake assist, electronic stability control with traction control and roll mitigation, front and rear park assist and tire pressure monitoring. Adaptive front lighting, automatic high beam assist, blind spot monitoring and a surround camera system are also available. The Land Rover Range Rover carries over with minor changes for 2012. New standard equipment includes HD radio, while the exterior gets refreshed with body-colored door handles, along with a gloss black treatment for the headlamp/tail lamp back plates and grille surround. Additionally, a Towing Preparation package is now offered, featuring a cross member with receiver, full-size spare and variable rear differential lock, as well as a new Silver Pack. Source: Model Reviews Introduction The Range Rover represents the top of the line for Land Rover. The current-generation Range Rover has been with us nearly 10 years, since the 2003 model year, yet it still feels fresh, it still feels like a superb vehicle, and it's still one of our favorite new vehicles. It's classy and luxurious, it's smooth, it's incredibly powerful particularly in supercharged form, and it is amazingly capable off road. The 2012 Range Rover lineup includes a new top-line model called the Autobiography Ultimate Edition. Swathed in soft-feel semi-aniline leather, its four power-adjustable bucket seats flank a full-length console that incorporates a machined aluminum laptop table, a drink chiller, separate rear-seat climate controls and more. Two Apple iPads are linked to the rear-seat entertainment system. Oxford leather covers the door casings, dashboard, and steering wheel, and the wood inlays in the dash and doors is genuine Kalahari. Even the luggage floor is special, paneled like speedboat's deck in teak, with metal and leather detailing. Each Autobiography Ultimate Edition will be built to order, and only 500 will be sold globally. 2012 Range Rovers come with HD Radio and an iPod lead, and a new Towing Package is available. The Range Rover's off-road capability is downright astounding, thanks to its Terrain Response electronic all-wheel drive and suspension system. The system includes Hill Start Assist and Gradient Acceleration Control. Range Rovers can scramble up rocky mountainsides, cross rivers and traverse mud bogs. They are easy to drive and instill confidence. The Range Rover interior is rich and beautiful. There are premium materials everywhere you look and touch. The leather seats are tall and supportive in all the right places, and there is a nearly infinite amount of adjustment. The steering wheel carries buttons galore for cruise control, telephone and audio, two of which are up-down-left-right selectors for display and information functions. All the rotary switches on the instrument panel are hefty, and scalloped so they can be used with gloved hands. Options include power reclining rear seats and a 1200-watt harman/kardon sound system. For 2012, the 5.0-liter V8 engine offers more power, now rated at 385 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. Land Rover says it can accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 7.2 seconds. That is plenty fast for anyone in the real world, and plenty impressive for a 5700-pound vehicle. We found the engine beautifully smooth. The Range Rover Supercharged model blows 510 horsepower out of the engine and gets to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds. We found the performance of the Supercharged Range Rover scintillating. It's an off-road rocket ship, with 460 pound-feet of torque available for passing or towing. All Range Rover models come with a 6-speed automatic transmission that's velvety smooth yet very responsive. The Supercharged uses powerful six-piston Brembo brakes, which will slow the truck safely whether braking repeatedly down a curvy mountain road or coming to a straight, quick stop from high speed. Naturally, they're supported by a sophisticated anti-lock brake system that's behind Hill Descent Control and Gradient Acceleration Control. Both are features that enhance safety on icy streets, not just off road. We've found few four-wheel-drive vehicles combine this level of acceleration and braking with a hushed, plush highway ride in a roomy cocoon of high-grade leather and wood. Whether crossing the Gobi Desert at night or negotiating Manhattan during the daily rush, the Range Rover is at ease. Source: New Car Test Drive Walkaround After a moderate facelift for 2010 and new grille textures for 2011, appearance changes for 2012 are minor. Door handles and side grilles are now body-color, while all lamp clusters acquire gloss black backplates for sharper contrast. The Range Rover design remains distinctive among SUVs, boxy and sleek at the same time, very classy. It has the shortest possible front and rear overhangs to maintain its awesome off-road clearances. Modest fender flares are integrated into the steel fenders rather than tacked on. Autobiography Ultimate Edition is distinguished by a unique, deeper front fascia that more sharply defines the lower air opening, wrapping body color around it rather than just over its top, as on the standard models. Matching upper and lower grilles go for the hot-rod Bentley look with a plain mesh that resembles, frankly, a chain-link fence in its texture, but with a brighter finish of course. The foglight nacelles are more prominent and bright-finished as well. The trademark fender vents are accented with brightwork. Politely short sill extensions visually connect the front and rear wheels, suggesting a running board more than anything racy. Like the deeper front fascia, they are not unattractive so much as out of place on an ultimate off-roader. Half a dozen different wheel styles are available, but the most striking features nine pairs of alternating thick and thin spokes (for 18 spokes in all), set tangentially to the hub. They look like they're spinning even when they're standing still. We prefer the more traditional styles. The teak-plank cargo floor looks quite convincingly like the deck of an antique yacht or speedboat. The planking continues on the inside of the fold-down tailgate, so opening the tailgate enhances, rather than spoils, the effect. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression All Range Rover models use the same compact 5.0-liter V8 that powers Jaguar sedans, with the latest technology including double overhead cams, 32 valves, variable valve timing, and direct fuel injection. The Range Rover engines are specially prepared to handle extreme tilts, water fording and extreme weather conditions. The Range Rover HSE uses a normally aspirated 385 horsepower version with 380 foot-pounds of torque. It accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds, a pace that's more than quick enough for safe passing. The engine sounds wonderful and feels blissfully smooth at full throttle, and is nearly soundless at cruising speeds. The Range Rover Supercharged takes that engine and adds the latest generation of Eaton supercharger, boosting the power to 510 horsepower and 461 foot-pounds of torque. The acceleration leaps from 0 to 60 in 5.9 seconds, which is hot rod territory, for this SUV weighing nearly three tons. All models use a ZF 6-speed automatic transmission, which features Normal, Sport and Manual modes. We found it effortless and unrestrained, and it shifts quickly in response to throttle input. There's a two-speed locking transfer case that can be shifted on the fly. The steering and suspension systems are nearly faultless, as long as you're not trying to treat the big SUV like it's a sports car. Lots of power-steering assist is needed for quick left-right moves at low speeds and off-road, but less is needed as speeds climb. The Range Rover is a tall, heavy vehicle, but it takes extreme maneuvers in stride. It works better to drive it in a stately manner. We found the ride quality of the Range Rover HSE to be about perfect. The suspension uses electronically controlled air springs and shock absorbers. We found the HSE provided excellent handling and little body roll in corners, especially for a hefty truck that rides this high off the ground and has a high center of gravity. The ride is smooth and the steering response is good, if not sports-car-like. It's a wonderful mix of luxury, silence and serenity. But it should be. Listen to all the things working for you: Dynamic systems include All-terrain Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Enhanced Understeer Control (EUC), Electronic Rear Brake Boost (ERBB), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Roll Stability Control (RSC), Hill Descent Control (HDC) and Gradient Release Control (GRC), Hill Start Assist (HSA) and Gradient Acceleration Control (GAC). It's a lot of alphabet soup, but it all works together both to increase capability and to make up for occasional deficiencies in the driving department. The Terrain Response system has five settings: Highway, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud/Ruts, Sand, and Rock Crawl. All you have to do is look out the windshield, assess the terrain, and select the appropriate setting. The Range Rover will drive accordingly, including setting the suspension height. We also got to test drive a Range Rover Supercharged model. Just going down the highway, it was delightful. The huge tires are very quiet, and they combine with the electronically controlled air suspension and premium Bilstein Damptronic adaptive damping shock absorbers to deliver an extremely plush luxury-car ride, sampling the roadway 500 times per second and changing shock rates accordingly, each corner acting independently of the other three. In consideration of its 140-mph top speed, the brakes on the Supercharged are big Brembos, with six-piston calipers in front. We found them extremely powerful, and very progressive and sensitive to conditions. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior The Range Rover interior is rich and beautiful. Premium materials are everywhere you look and touch. There's European leather on the headliner, pillars, and door casings. High quality satin black and natural wood trim adds to the sumptuous feel of the interior. The HSE offers Burr Walnut or Cherry wood trim and both are pretty. The Black Lacquer looks impressive when clean, but it quickly shows dirt and we prefer the traditional woods. A 12-inch Thin Film Transistor screen replaces the usual instrument cluster. This screen displays the tach, speedo and other instruments virtually. The driver is able to move the gauges around on the screen for more convenient off-road operation. It's bright, clear, interesting and versatile. The front leather seats are tall and supportive in all the right places, and there is a nearly infinite amount of adjustment. The steering wheel carries buttons galore for cruise control, telephone and audio, two of which are up-down-left-right selectors for display and information functions. All the rotary switches on the instrument panel are hefty, and scalloped so they can be used with gloved hands. The window glass in the rear doors is laminated to enhance the silent running in the back seat. Power reclining of the rear seat, in addition to heating and cooling, is available. The 710-watt, 14-speaker harman/kardon system that comes standard produces chamber-like sound. A 1200-watt, 19-speaker system is optional. The available rear seat entertainment system includes a 6 DVD changer, separate screens in the front seatbacks, and headphones. The elaborate full-length console in the Autobiography Ultimate Edition incorporates, among other things, a small writing (or laptop) desk and a cooler with a slide-open top. Inside are holders for a couple of glasses (sized just right for cupholders that look as bright and solid as machined billet) and a bottle of your favorite back-seat beverage. It's really a striking bit of functional sculpture that looks, above all, convincingly expensive. The Terrain Response system, controlled by a click-wheel on the console, allows the driver to select among six chassis setups, depending on the terrain being traversed. Height control allows the driver to lower the body of the Range Rover for easy entry of passengers or raise it for off-road clearance. A third control allows for locking the center and rear differentials for demanding off-road conditions or icy on-road driving. There is a separate switch for Hill Descent Control, the system that restricts downhill speed to 2 mph on any grade without touching the brakes. In any off-road mode, a set of icons is displayed on the TFT screen showing the front tire steering angle and the locked/unlocked differential positions, so the driver always knows what's what when driving off-road. Using the height control to lower the Range Rover is a great aid when loading dogs and cargo. Source: New Car Test Drive Summary The 2012 Range Rover is luxurious, powerful, smooth, classy and extremely safe, with offroad capability that's off the chart and handling that's downright nimble for a 5700-pound truck. It uses a 5.0-liter V8 made by Jaguar, with an excellent 6-speed automatic transmission. The standard Range Rover HSE has plenty of performance. The Supercharged model makes 510 horsepower and blows your mind. Sam Moses contributed to this report after his test drive of a Range Rover in Colorado; with Jim McCraw reporting from Eastnor Castle, England. Well, when was the last time you saw one, let alone one in virtually stock condition? Maybe it's not a collector car yet, but something this clean with V8 power and room for the whole gang can't be a mistake, not at this price. The low-key looks of the big Malibu have aged well, and with everything '70s being popular again, you could have the coolest ride around if you're into irony. Actually, the green paint and smooth bodywork look pretty good for their age and it's obvious that someone has taken care of this car over the past 40 or so years. It comes from a warm climate and all four doors fit well, suggesting a car that has never been wrecked or neglected. Is it perfect? Nope. But imagine all the attention this car will generate at next week's cruise night, because everyone knew someone who drove one of these. It's also got a rather rare matching green vinyl top that's in quite good condition without the usual fading and popped seams you'd expect on a car of this vintage. The massive battering-ram bumpers are in excellent shape, the stainless shines up well, and you have to admit that the stacked headlights look pretty good on this body style. The big interior is also wonderfully well-preserved. Aside from some sun fading, which is inevitable on a car with this much glass area, it's completely intact. The plush bench seats are just as soft and comfortable as your sofa at home and the button-tufted door panels will look and feel familiar to anyone who grew up in the '70s. Instrumentation is basic, with just speed and fuel level, but the compartmentalized instrument panel is easy to read and still looks quite good. There's a newer AM/FM/CD stereo in the dash that sounds good in the hushed Malibu's interior and while it's not heavy on options, you just can't duplicate that big car feel these days. Your friends will be amazed by the stretch-out room available in back and if there was ever a car designed for road trips, this is it, from the comfortable ride to the gigantic trunk that's a little scruffy but in otherwise great condition. Chevy's bulletproof 305 cubic inch V8 provides good torque and reasonable fuel economy in the big Malibu, plus a nice V8 burble from the single tailpipe out back. Everything suggests that this is the car's original engine and it's in very good condition overall. It's so clean under the hood that we have to believe it's been recently restored, because no 40-year-old car has engine enamel that looks that good. You also get a correct air cleaner with snorkel intake, fresh belts and hoses with tower hose clamps, and lots of new parts wherever you look. The TH350 3-speed automatic transmission is also original to the car and shifts smoothly to complete the luxury car feel. There's some light surface rust underneath, but you can see originality everywhere, from the floors to the exhaust system with a factory-style catalytic converter still in place. Simple hubcaps and blackwall tires emphasize the car's simplicity, and we wouldn't want it any other way. Collectable? Maybe not. Cool? Depends on who you ask. Affordable fun? Absolutely! This Malibu will bring back memories for many and offers a great alternative to the more familiar cars of the '70s. Recently serviced and ready to have fun, this end-of-the-line ragtop is the heavy cruiser you've been looking for. Repainted perhaps 25 years ago in its original dark blue livery, this big luxury drop-top has that old-school land yacht look. It was purchased new by the current owner's grandmother and has remained in the family since it was new, so there's a lot of history behind it. It's also lived its entire life in sunny, warm Atlanta, so the bodywork is quite straight, unlike the cars from up north. The paint is about what you'd expect from a car this age, with a good shine and a few signs of use, and it's exactly right for a car that you're going to drive regularly. The Caprice's styling was clean and uncluttered, a rarity for the mid-1970s and today it represents an era we'll never see again because there's just nothing like a massive American luxury car. Nice chrome bumpers and stainless side trim make the car look as long as a city block and it's fitted with fender skirts to help with the sleek profile. The black interior is completely original and offers a tantalizing glimpse into the 1970s luxury car market. Wide bench seats were good for six passengers and the contrasting blue carpets not only work well with the bodywork but add some style to the otherwise monochromatic interior. There are minor signs of age and since this car has lived in a warm climate, there's a bit of fading, but it would be a mistake to change anything in this awesome survivor. The gauges are all fully functional and as the top-of-the-line Chevy, just about everything is included, from factory A/C to power windows and locks, to an AM/FM stereo radio that is probably due for an upgrade today. The seating surfaces are in good shape for their age, with a back seat that still looks almost new and while it's not real wood, the faux burled walnut on the door panels and dash do warm up the interior. There's a recent black power convertible top with glass rear window, and it stows easily under a matching black boot. And for road trips, nothing beats one of these heavy cruisers, with this one offering a very original trunk that includes what might just be the original spare tire. The 400 cubic inch V8 is this car's original engine and it runs superbly thanks to a recent major service. It's not detailed for show, of course, but you already know these engines are virtually bulletproof and the big V8 never balks at moving the Caprice around. The carburetor is freshly rebuilt, the water pump is new, all the belts have been replaced, and even the radiator was flushed so it's ready to enjoy immediately. It starts easily and has a smooth, luxurious idle and pulls well with big-cube torque. The TH350 3-speed automatic transmission feeds 2.73 gears out back, so it's an effortless highway cruiser and the quiet dual exhaust system just purrs along at highway speeds. 215/75/15 Michelin whitewall radials are fitted, adding a period-perfect final touch. Documented with a lot of original paperwork, including manuals and maintenance records, this is a car you can buy with confidence and enjoy for a long time to come. Lots of room, a pillowy soft ride, and purring V8 power all make for a very unique driving experience that we'll never see again. With incredible preservation, this one will take you back to the great days of open-air cruising when American luxury made you feel like the king of the world. The color is called Silver Taupe and it looks just about right on this big Olds. Not aggressive, but rather sophisticated and elegant. It's also the car's original paint, and while it's not perfect, it is remarkably well-preserved for being more than 40 years old. You could give it a deep clean and a buff to really bring out the shine, but as it sits, it has a nice soft glow that makes you want to heat out west on a long road trip. Obviously with original paint the sheetmetal underneath is also original and in excellent condition and despite the era's reputation for excess, the Delta 88 is clean and chiseled without looking too baroque. A contrasting rub strip accentuates the car's clean flanks and a familiar Oldsmobile split grille up front was the corporate look during the mid-70s. Sure, there's some chrome, including a pair of bumpers as big as battering rams, but the overall presentation is restrained and trim. The black interior is also 100% original and shockingly well-preserved. Wide bench seats offer room for six and even the guys in the middle probably won't be complaining about space. There are no splits or tears in the seats, no major wear, just some very minor comfort marks that are probably inevitable. Neat trim on the doors adds a bit of interest to the otherwise monochromatic interior and even the faux woodgrain on the dash is pretty convincing. Power windows are a useful addition on any convertible and the AM/8-track radio provides reasonable entertainment if you happen to have some 8-track tapes lying around. The convertible top is also probably original and in good condition, and these big GM ragtops used a unique scissors mechanism that allowed for a full-width back seat as well as a glass rear window. There's a matching black boot for when the top is down and the trunk is outfitted with a correct rubber mat and full-sized spare. The 350 cubic inch "Rocket" V8 under the hood delivers plenty of power for effortless cruising and entertaining performance. No, these were never intended to be fast cars, but it has a graceful and inevitable feel and you just know that it was built to cruise all day at 80 MPH across the wide-open spaces. The engine bay is pretty original and not detailed for show, but there's plenty of recent maintenance, including a new radiator up front to keep it cool. It starts with a familiar Oldsmobile growl from the single tailpipe and idles smoothly enough that you can barely feel it through the steering wheel. As a full-sized car, the big Olds gets a TH400 3-speed automatic transmission and a 10-bolt rear end with 2.73 gears inside, so it's a superlative highway cruiser. The floors are in good condition for an original car, and it hasn't lost a bit of its impossibly smooth ride. Part of that is attributable to the cushy 225/75/15 Uniroyal radials, which have been fitted to the original wheels. With only three owners and a remarkable state of preservation, this Olds represents high-quality summer time fun at a very reasonable price. Forget about the humble motorhome, Dembell is launching the world’s most luxurious “land yacht” for explorers who appreciate the finer things.

The fledgling German outfit designed by Ustory Branding has just unveiled a lavish new RV that is more akin to a superyacht than perhaps anything else currently on the roads. Built around a three-axle Mercedes chassis, the camper is decidedly sporty with sleek lines and a red racing stripe, but it’s inside where things really get interesting.

Mercedes-amg’s scrappy new 4-cylinder gt43 might just make your muscle car jealous, bentley buyers spend more than $42,000 on add-ons.

Available in three different trims, the motorhome boasts the finest furnishings and a laundry list of top-notch amenities that includes a separate garage for your supercar. The upscale interior can be tailored to each driver’s needs and was spearheaded by Italian design team Galeazzi e Minotti , which is also responsible for outfitting some of Azimut’s drool-worthy superyachts.

At the front of the RV, the cockpit is equipped with four captain’s seats that each come with air spring suspension and a built-in massage function. This area flows seamlessly onto the plush lounge that sports a large leather sofa, a 55-inch TV, and a lift-away queen bed that can accommodate guests or children when needed. There is also room to add an optional dining table.

The. electric parasol is perfect for alfresco dining.

The nearby kitchen is fitted with state-of-the-art Miele appliances, including an induction cooktop, oven, refrigerator, dishwasher and microwave to help you cook up a storm while on the road. The bathroom, meanwhile, features stone tiles and a ceramic sink, shower and toilet. The camper also comes equipped with a washer and dryer.

As for the primary suite, it stretches the entire width of the vehicle and comprises a large bed (79 inches by 79 inches), a few drawers and wardrobes and another TV for binge-watching while under the blankets.

Naturally, the camper offers all the requisite creature comforts, such as A/C, central heating, ambient lighting and a Bose home theater system that pairs with the two TVs. It also sports roof-mounted solar panels, an onboard generator and a 1,000-liter freshwater tank for when you want to live off-grid. There’s even an electric parasol for alfresco dining.

Dembell Motorhome

The interior resembles that of a luxe superyacht.

The real pièce de résistance, though, is the “tender garage.” It’s available in three sizes and can accommodate a wide range of vehicles. The first option comes with three slide-outs and offers just enough room to store a quad bike or bicycle. The small garage is fitted with two slide-outs and can fit smaller cars. Finally, the large garage boasts enough space to fit a Ferrari California or any other supercars measuring less than 14.75 feet.

The Dembell motorhome is slated to make its first public appearance at the Düsseldorf Caravan Salon taking place on August 27 in Germany . Details regarding pricing and production are still to come, but this is one land yacht that shouldn’t have any issues finding a captain.

This Futuristic SUV Is The Epitome Of A Luxury Land Yacht

The EV concept shows how a future Pininfarina-branded SUV will redefine today's standards of what a luxury SUV is.

Key Takeaways

  • Pininfarina's Pura Vision concept car provides a glimpse into the future of luxury SUVs, showcasing premium materials, design principles, and high-tech features.
  • The vehicle combines the design principles of past Pininfarina sports cars with elegant and timeless aesthetics, creating a futuristic and powerful SUV-like stance.
  • The Pura Vision is equipped with advanced technology, including a wide digital display, floating center console, touchscreen panel, hidden headlights, and sustainable materials such as zero-impact leather and recycled aluminum.

Legendary car design firm and coachbuilder Pininfarina recently revealed a concept car that it believes to be the future of luxury SUVs .

The Pininfarina Pura Vision concept is an ultra-luxury EV SUV that showcases the premium materials, design principles, and tech that the coachbuilder will equip its future vehicles with — giving car enthusiasts an exciting look into future production Pininfarina vehicles.

The ultra-luxury SUV gracefully blends the design principles of past Pininfarina-designed sports cars with the more elegant and timeless aesthetics that define modern vehicles. A combination of high-tech equipment, space, and elegance makes the Pura Vision a true futuristic land yacht.

The Pininfarina Pura Vision Is A Peek Into The Future Of Ultra-Luxury SUVs

Pininfarina says the Pura Vision isn't an SUV and is more of a LUV — Luxury Utility Vehicle. It's an EV concept with an elegant timeless design inspired by sailboats and yachts.

The coachbuilder's designers focused on a few key factors to create the Pura Vision's eye-catching sleek exterior, the most major of which is the beauty of simplicity. The EV greets on-lookers with its minimalist design which its smooth, expansive white-colored exterior panels and sharp exterior lines highlight.

Despite the vehicle's sports car-esque sloping silhouette, its low hood, high fenders, and bold upper body give the vehicle a more powerful and imposing SUV-like stance. The Pura Vision's designers said that the 1947 Cisitalia 202 Gran Sport , a beautiful Pininfarina-designed sports car that became the first car in the Museum of Modern Art's collection, inspired this particular design language.

The Pura Vision's occupants, however, get a better deal by getting to witness and experience the vehicle's luxurious yacht-inspired interior.

The horizontal boom of a sail on a yacht inspired the floating center console that houses the vehicle's infotainment screen. While the foil of a sailboat inspired the vehicle's two front floating seats.

According to Pininfarina, the vehicle serves as a peek into the future vehicles of the company — vehicles that will exemplify the "Pura" design principles its designers applied to the Pura Vision concept car. By taking design principles from some of Pininfarina's greatest vehicles and adding modern design aesthetics, the legendary coachbuilder was able to create a pioneering futuristic vehicle with iconic and timeless looks.

Passengers Get A High-Tech Futuristic Ride On The Pininfarina Pura Vision

As the Pura Vision showcases the future of Pininfarina, it is only right that the vehicle is chock full of tech.

The EV treats drivers to a wide digital display that contains the vehicle's instrument clusters. Vehicle photos reveal the driver's digital display showing vehicle information as well as an interesting navigation app with 3D buildings and objects.

Flanking the steering wheel and driver's digital display are two knobs with small digital displays — one for gear shifting and another for selecting what seems to be driving modes. Drivers also get a head-up display.

One of the main design elements in the front half of the cabin is the floating center console which houses the center infotainment screen. While drivers and occupants use the screen, it holds a low angle and hosts a variety of vehicle controls.

RELATED: Automobili Pininfarina Imagines Electric Luxury With The PURA Vision Design Concept

Interestingly, it folds flush against the center console when it isn't in use. By folding, Pininfarina says it reduces distractions and enhances the airy atmosphere of the passenger cabin as it reveals additional space that extends to the driver and passenger footwells while it's stowed. The luxury vehicle also has a touchscreen panel on the front driver-side door to control other vehicle functionalities such as selecting music.

It also has hidden headlights that only reveal themselves when in use. While hidden, the 0.04-inch ultra-slim daytime running lights steal the show. According to Pininfarina, it uses L.E.S.S. nanofiber lighting tech that'll eventually make its way to future vehicles thanks to the versatility of the tech.

The Pura Combines The SUV Ruggedness With Ultra-Luxury Car Styling

Contrasts are one of the highlights of the car's design philosophy as it manages to pull off a sports car silhouette in an SUV body — a contrast found on other high-performance SUVs like the Ferrari Purosangue super-SUV . Highlighting this particular contrast is the Pura Vision's pristine smooth white body panels that are right up against the aggressive exposed carbon fiber elements in the vehicle's lower half.

RELATED: The Real Reason Ferrari And Pininfarina Stopped Collaborating

However, there are plenty more contrasts on the vehicle. For example, its rugged-looking matte black 23-inch wheels give the appearance of an off-roader. Yet, Pininfarina matched it with the sleek elegant lines of the rest of the Pura Vision's luxurious exterior, just like on this off-roading custom Ferrari Purosangue pickup truck render.

Pininfarina Pura Vision Features

  • Matte black 23-inch wheels with all-terrain tires
  • Floating seats
  • Roomy cabin with a cocoon-like effect
  • Wine cooler
  • Champagne flutes
  • Speakers in each headrest
  • Interior and exterior exposed carbon fiber

The rugged yet luxurious contrast extends to the vehicle's interior, where occupants experience a roomy cabin with a cocoon-like effect, an expansive glass roof, premium materials, and a wine cooler with accompanying champagne flutes. The Pura Vision also has speakers in each seat headrest giving individual passengers a bespoke listening experience.

All The Doors On The Pininfarina Pura Vision Open In A Unique Way

Getting in the Pininfarina Pura Vision will surely capture the attention of everyone around the vehicle thanks to its unique stargate doors. These unique pillarless doors open in three ways. The front doors open just like any other vehicle, while the rear doors are suicide doors just like the Ferrari Purosangue . Where it differs however is its windows that open upward just like a gullwing door.

According to the Pura Vision's designers, they took inspiration from the doors of the elegant yet oddly named Lancia Florida .

Even the two-part tailgate opens in a unique way. First, the upper window of the tailgate swings upward. Next, the lower half slides out like a drawer before folding downward and revealing a flat surface. Dividing the two sides of the rear cargo area is a light strip right down the middle.

'Everything is rising at a scary rate': Why car and home insurance costs are surging

Ezra Croft from North Carolina saw his annual homeowners' insurance surge to $1,600, a $700 increase. Many others across the country are also seeing surging auto and home insurance premiums.

Ezra Croft has never filed an insurance claim, and his house in Raleigh, North Carolina isn't close to a stormy coastline or a fire-prone forest.

So Croft was surprised when his annual homeowner's insurance premium shot up to $1,600, or $700 dollars more than he was paying just a couple of years ago.

4 reasons why your car insurance premium is soaring

4 reasons why your car insurance premium is soaring

"I'm a middle income guy," Croft says. "Don't make a ton of extra money. At this point I'm teetering on the point of inaffordability."

Similar complaints can be heard all over the country. On average, insurance companies sought to raise homeowners' premiums by more than 11% last year, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence .

Auto insurance premiums are climbing even faster , far outpacing overall inflation .

Take Paul Morro. His auto insurance bill just jumped by $600 a year.

"Here's the kicker," Morro says. "My wife and I both work from home. So we have no commute to speak of."

He's bracing himself for the bill to insure his house, in Herndon, Va.

"It just feels like everything is rising at a scary rate," Morro says.

Why insurance costs are surging

Insurance companies insist they're just playing catch-up, after two years of big losses. For every dollar in home and auto premiums they collected last year, insurance companies paid an average of $1.10 in claims and expenses, according to the Insurance Information Institute.

"Nobody wants to have that higher-price bill," says Sean Kevelighan, the institute's CEO. But he added companies "need to price insurance according to the risk level that's out there."

Inflation is partly to blame for those big payouts. The cost of fixing or replacing damaged homes and cars has jumped sharply in recent years as a result of rising labor and material prices.

Even as those prices start to level off, though, insurers are having to contend with a mounting toll of natural disasters, and not just in the usual places like Florida and California.

A car remains in the wreckage after a house and garage were abruptly destroyed by a landslide as an atmospheric river storm inundates the Hollywood Hills area of Los Angeles on Feb. 6, 2024. A spate of natural disasters is helping lead to soaring insurance premiums across the country.

Last year, there were around two dozen severe storms in the U.S. with billion-dollar price tags, spreading lightning, hail and damaging winds through many parts of the country.

"While a lot of these storms don't make national headlines, they do tend to be very costly at the local level," says Tim Zawacki, principal research analyst for insurance at S&P Global Market Intelligence. "And the breadth of where these storms are occurring is something that I think the industry is quite concerned about."

As a result, insurance premiums are likely to keep climbing this year even as overall inflation cools.

Insurers have a lot of pricing power

While state regulators have some power to limit those price hikes, insurance companies tend to get their way. Regulators know that if they move too aggressively to limit premiums, insurance companies might stop offering coverage altogether.

"The insurance companies have become really aggressive in their bullying," says Doug Heller, director of insurance for the Consumer Federation of America. "You've heard a lot about companies that are threatening to pull out of the market if they don't get what they want. Generally speaking that bullying has worked."

Douglas Heller, director Of insurance at the Consumer Federation of America, speaks during a Senate Banking Committee hearing about the property insurance market on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 7, 2023.

Last week, the Treasury Department hosted a roundtable with consumer and environmental groups to discuss the ways climate change is rattling insurance markets. The department also plans to host a meeting on the topic with insurance industry stakeholders.

Customers can sometimes save money by shopping around. Alicia Pitorri switched insurance carriers after the cost of her family's auto policy jumped more than a thousand dollars.

"It was Liberty Mutual," she says with a rueful laugh. "We've since switched to State Farm since the renewal went up so much."

Extreme weather, fueled by climate change, cost the U.S. $165 billion in 2022

Extreme weather, fueled by climate change, cost the U.S. $165 billion in 2022

Pitorri, who lives in Nashville, says while she managed to shave a few hundred dollars off the bill, she's still paying a lot more than she did two years ago.

"What can you do?" she asks. "You need insurance. You can't have a vehicle or a house without them. So you have to pay for it. And you figure out where you can cut other things to make sure you can drive around."

Going without insurance

Auto insurance is required in nearly all states. And lenders typically require homeowners who have a mortgage to carry insurance as well. Still, as premiums keep climbing, more people are scaling back their coverage or even going without.

Ezra Croft considered dropping his homeowners' coverage, but ultimately decided to pay the higher premium.

"I'm fairly good at home repairs, but if something like a tree fell on my house or a tornado or a fire, I don't know what I would do," Croft says.

A survey by the Insurance Information Institute last year found 12% of homeowners had no insurance, up from 5% four years earlier. Going without coverage is risky, though, for both individuals and communities.

"Insurance is an important product, not only for economic stability but for community resilience," says Heller. "We are very concerned that these escalating premiums are going to lead to escalating rates of uninsured drivers and homeowners, which makes us all quite vulnerable."

Restaurant-Yacht Chaika

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!

Thank you for your feedback and invite you to have lunch or dinner again aboard the ship in an atmosphere of high standards of yacht hospitality.

everything was perfect - the food, the service, the desserts were the best, nice atmosphere and the location - magical

Best food, best view in Moscow. absolutely faultless from arrival to finish. Best risotto i had for many years absolutely perfectly cooked. The view on Ukrainian hotel and the white house by night is amazing

Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Hello, Alexander Your comment is extremely important for us, thank you a lot for it. We are terribly sorry for your time that you`ve spent waiting your order and we have already taken actions to improve quality of our service and it would be realy... More

Food is very expensive, very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.

I often visit this restaurant and must say it’s one of the best in Moscow in terms of quality and service. Staff really try hard to make sure that you are happy and satisfied. Customer service is a huge problem in Moscow but Chaika sets... a great example for others in the industry! Food is delicious and the menu has lots of options for everyone! Atmosphere is great and view is beautiful on the embankment. Special thanks to German & Oleg! More

Thank you for your feedback! Again aboard the yacht restaurant "Chaika" in accordance with the high standards of yacht hospitality.

Highly recommended, great location in the city center of Moscow with a superb atmosphere. Too many menu choices, though all delicious!

Thx a lot for your review! We are looking forward to see you in our restaurants.

Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap.
