chief stewardess, i first spoke to jacob from bespoke crew in my first few weeks of dock walking near antibes. the first call was extremely helpful; and he took an interest in my own background, qualifications, and experience. we then discussed the position i applied for in great detail. i am now secure in that role we discussed and after five months in i couldn't be happier with the yacht i am on, and the crew i am with., james lashmar - pt/ deckhand, it has been a great experience dealing with bespoke. excellent communication and a fast turnaround from the initial discussion to being placed on the yacht i am on now., euan ratley - deckhand, it was great dealing with jacob, one of the better agencies out there, tom riley - avit, claire provided such amazing support when looking for a new role. she really took the time to listen to both my previous experience and what i was looking for in the future to find the ideal position. claire’s help enabled me to make the transition from lead service to chief stewardess. i’d absolutely recommend bespoke crew to anyone in the industry., bonnie mitchell – chief stewardess, after working closely with bespoke crew over the past 3 seasons for permanent and temporary crew placement, they have become our go-to agent for crew. we have been highly satisfied with bespoke’s high caliber of service, which has been very professional yet personable. we have found they genuinely listen to and understand the requirements expressed for the crew sought and deliver only highly suitable candidates that meet the specific experience level, necessary skillset, and personal demeanor desired., brianna stenhouse - chief stewardess, i had a fantastic experience working with frankie. she found my cv, reached out to me, and i was successful in landing the first role she presented me with, which she ensured met my needs. she is communicative, friendly, and professional; most importantly, in a recruiter-candidate relationship, she comes across as very honest. when i am ready for my next opportunity, and if i take on any recruitment on board, i know who to call. i look forward to working with frankie again., helena sanguinetti - purser, i had a great experience with claire from bespoke crew she’s super helpful, always checks-in, and answers all of my questions. she helped me land my new role on an amazing yacht with great opportunities. i’m so happy for all of the support, i would love to work together with her again in the future would really recommend bespoke crew., linn sundqvist - stewardess, i had the luck to have claire contact me from bespoke crew recruitment. as a greenie, i heard it would be hard starting in the industry, and only on my second day of searching for a job, claire told me about me three amazing options. one of the yachts got in contact with me, and the next day and everything fell into place. she takes time to get to know you and find the job that would make you happy on all terms. thank you, claire, for sticking by me the trust i have in you is immense., zoé meeuwens - stewardess, this is the first crew agent where we feel listened to and not just sent 10+ candidates that vaguely fit our requirements and with the candidates that we hire through bespoke crew we always get great longevity. we have complete faith and trust in the bespoke crew team, so much so that they are the only crew agent we work with., ruben mejier - chief officer, i have been using bespoke crew for the past few years. they have done a wonderful job and have presented me with first class crew to choose from and have not inundated me with an inbox full of candidates. the backup and follow up also has been exceptional. i highly recommend bespoke and their staff as an excellent choice for crew placement., scott miller - captain, it was such a pleasure working with bespoke crew thank you, claire, for your swift responses and for providing us with good quality crew that fits our specific requirements in a short time frame i look forward to working with them in the future., tina floegal - chief stewardess, i wouldn’t work with any other crew agent. the team at bespoke crew listens to exactly what we require in a candidate and delivers solid, carefully selected, and well-vetted crew. the team has placed multiple candidates across the interior, deck, engineering, and galley. their excellent communication and high level of professionalism, it makes them a joy to work with., savannah squire - chief stewardess, i was first introduced to bespoke crew when i was personally called for a reference check. as we know, the industry is small, and we are all somehow connected by social interaction. checking references, especially verbal references, is of utmost importance when trying to find that “perfect fit” for your yacht. i immediately knew that the friendly, trusted voice on the end was doing their job diligently, trying to find that ‘perfect fit’ for another captain, and i respected that. we have worked closely with bespoke crew for nearly three years and have only positive feedback to contribute to their professional service. most, if not all, the crew has served on a longevity basis, all of whom fit in very well with our crew dynamic. i can highly recommend bespoke crew for your crew placement needs., aldon beukman - captain, bespoke has hands down become my number 1 crew agency. the agents i have worked with have all been extremely responsive and friendly and have made a real effort to build a relationship with you. they truly understand what you are looking for and never try to 'throw anything out there.' with my crazy schedule, they are good about chasing me up when need be and never letting anything fall by the wayside. there is always open, honest transparency, and i appreciate that so much. it is a big relief that there is such a consistent, all-star crew agency out there, brielle crumpler - chief stewardess, it’s been a pleasure dealing with the bespoke crew team ….thank you for discovering the right individuals for our program. we greatly appreciate the care is taken when introducing quality candidates to us and the effort to ensure a good long-term fit., len beck - captain, bespoke crew and their team have been a great help in finding the right people for our island. even though land-based and a very remote location, frankie was able to forward excellent candidates competent for the roles. bespoke crew is very responsive, responsible, and highly reliable. they stand behind their candidates 100%. excellent background checks and written and verbal references were provided. a great database of staff. highly recommended, ana white - general manager - private island in the caribbean, we are the managers in charge of a 25m sailing yacht and used bespoke crew to employ a new captain. frankie at bespoke crew was excellent. she acted quickly, provided regular updates, and produced an excellent list of highly qualified candidates. we placed the captain and would highly recommend her and bespoke crew., tom benson - Marine Engineering Jobs

Please note: you must have an EU passport or a Greek work visa to apply! Do not apply if you are not eligible to work in Greece.

Sail Ionian are looking to expand their team of marine engineers for the 2024 season. The maintenance and appearance of our yachts is of great importance. Therefore our engineering team is a vital part of the company. Our reputation as the leading charter company in the Ionian hinges on guest satisfaction and our engineers ensure that everything on a yacht is kept in top condition.

As a dealer for Bavaria we stock an entire warehouse of spare parts, this not only makes sure all the equipment on the yacht works but makes the job easier and more enjoyable. We like to see our engineers take pride in their job and in their yachts. Find out more about our company here.

In short, yacht engineering is a very varied role including everything from engine maintenance, electrical and plumbing to fibreglass work. Similarly our charter fleet is varied and consists of yachts from 30 feet – 56 feet including catamarans. In addition, our engineers are also responsible for our fleet of three fast RIBs, an RYA Powerboat qualification (or equivalent) is a strong advantage for this role.

What is the work like at Sail Ionian?

Firstly, during the summer sailing season our engineering team is busiest on the day our guests arrive. Each yacht is thoroughly checked and any repairs made before the guests board. Once the yacht is out on charter the engineering team will take calls from guests with issues and if necessary go out on one of our three fast RIBs to the yacht and swiftly fix any problems. Secondly, over the winter months our team work in the nearby boat yard completing a full annual maintenance program on each yacht.

In conclusion, whether you have years of engineering experience or simply a passion for boats then why not apply for this fantastic opportunity.

Sailing in Greece – Things to Know Before You Go

sailing in Greece

Are you planning to go sailing in Greece? You’re not the only one!

With its thousands of islands and islets, Greece is one of the world’s most popular yacht charter destinations. And it’s easy to understand why.

When you set sail for Greece or rent a boat in Greece, you’ll get to explore diverse nature, incredible culture, great architecture, and delicious food, all in one country.

You might, as many other boaters, decide to return to Greece more than once!

Whether you’re thinking of sailing your own boat or chartering one, you’re going to need some tips if you want to do some island hopping. So today I’ll share some practical information with you.

Something worth knowing is that there are more options than ever to charter a yacht in Greece with online rental companies like Sailo and Click and Boat  making hiring a yacht an easy and convenient process.

Now, let’s dive into it!

Things to Know About Sailing in Greece

1. the best time to sail in greece.

Sailing to Kefalonia, one of the Ionian islands

Greece’s sailing season is in full force between late April and early November.

High season lasts from the last week of June until mid-September. High season does mean crowded marinas and anchorages, which is something to keep in mind.

But, there are some upsides to sailing in Greece during high season as well. It’s when Greece is the most lively. All the shops and restaurants are open, the streets are filled with people and the atmosphere is happy and vibrant.

You might know that summers in Greece can be very hot and dry. Think of temperatures up to 35 degrees Celcius (95 ºF) around the coast and islands. However, the Meltemi winds offer some relief from the heat, but more about that later.

I would say, the best time to sail in Greece is either in June or the second half of September, as you’ll still be able to enjoy that summer feeling, but with less of a crowd. On top of that, if you are renting a yacht, there will be some great offers!

2. Changing Winds & Weather Conditions in Greece

A view of Port Gaios

Greece’s weather is characterized by hot, dry summers and damp, mild winters.

The weather conditions start to get unstable at the end of October , due to the decreasing Azores High and the combination of cold and hot air masses, which cause thunderstorms.

Winds in Greece are also known to be very changeable .

The wind will change its direction from north to south and back every 3-4 days. The Meltemi winds , the strong, dry northerly winds, dominate across the Aegean Sea from the end of June until the beginning of September.

The Meltemi blows up to 8 Beaufort. And although this wind can cause harsh sailing conditions, it also brings down the temperature and humidity and provides good visibility. This, as mentioned before, makes summer temperatures a lot more pleasant.

The Meltemi winds are strongest during July and August and the Cyclades are affected by these winds the most.

The Meltemi is one of the few Mediterranean winds that do not necessarily die out at the end of the day and can easily last for three to six days. It is however strongest during sunny hours.

We can divide Greece into five wind zones. Sometimes, the winds of each zone blow independently, but not when the Meltemi gets strong, then the wind directions are very similar everywhere.

Northwest winds dominate the Ionian Sea, they start blowing in the midmornings and get less in the evening.

Westerly winds dominate the coast around Peloponnese, which can reach up to 6 Beaufort, and sometimes southerly winds (Scirocco) as well.

All other regions near the coast can expect north-dominated winds because of the landmasses.

Between and behind isles with high mountains you can experience serious gusts of winds , which is something to keep in mind when sailing around Greece.

In short, when you are sailing in Greece you want to check the weather frequently. But this is no different in most of the rest of the Mediterranean. And if you don’t like the sound of strong Meltemi winds, then avoid the Cyclades.

3. Where to Go Sailing in Greece

Greece is full of golden sandy beaches, secluded anchorages, hillside towns, and hidden coves.

When you charter a boat in Greece your time here most likely will be limited. And even if you plan to spend the entire season sailing the Greek islands, you still couldn’t visit everything.

So, you’ll have to make a selection.

Some of the best sailing destinations in Greece are the Ionian Islands, the Saronic and Argolic Gulfs, the Sporades, and the Dodecanese.

It’s hard to make a small selection, but I’ll list a few of the best anchorages below.

3.1 The Ionian Islands

a sailboat anchored in Zakynthos, one of the Ionian Islands

Corfu, Lefkada, Meganisi, Ithaca, Kefalonia, and the many other Ionian islands are full of wonderful places to explore.

Unique rock formations and crystal-clear waters are what you’ll find here. The region has a large number of good anchorages and the islands offer easy and protected navigation.

The Best Anchorages Around the Ionian Islands:

Petritis, Vlicho, Abelake Bay, Frikes, and Blue Caves Agios Nikolaos.

3.2 The Saronic and Argolic Gulfs

Aegina, one of the Saronic Islands of Greece

These regions are sheltered from strong summer winds, especially from the Meltemi.

The Saronic and Argolic Gulfs offer lots of possibilities for sailing along the coasts and around the islands of the gulf.

There are many famous archaeological and historical sites to discover in the region and its proximity to Athens makes especially the Saronic Gulf a popular destination to charter a boat.

The Best Anchorages in the Saronic and Argolic Gulf:

Perdika Egina Nord, Skilomango West, Ormos Kalamakiou, Lefteri (to visit Athens ), Ormos Skindos, Vivari, Romvi, and Arvanitias.

3.3 The Sporades

sunset while sailing in Greece

Coming from the Saronic Gulf it will take you two or three days to sail to the Sporades.

If you don’t mind a slightly longer sail you are rewarded by a quieter Greek sailing destination , simply because it’s further away from the main rental areas.

There are many little gems to discover around the Sporades as the islands differ a lot from each other. Think of small ports, wild anchorages, and many historical and natural attractions.

The islands can be explored by scooter or car.

The Best Anchorages in the Sporades:

Koukounaries, Limnonari Beach, Skiropoula East, and Tzortzi Gizmos.

3.4 The Dodecanese

boats docked in Kos

Between Samos and Rhodes lies the famous Dodecanese region which is also known as the Southern Sporades.

It’s an archipelago that makes a great sailing destination, filled with small coves and harbors on more than 160 islands and islets that are mostly uninhabited.

Samos and Rhodes are large and rich in archaeological sites. Take some time to explore those by car.

The Best Anchorages in the Dodecanese:

Kos, Ormos Livadia, and Tigani.

4. Cruising Guides for Sailing in Greece

I use Navionics for navigation and although that works well, I always try to get a cruising guide for each country or region I visit.

Cruising guides not only give great information about marinas and anchorages and how to approach them, but also about what there is to do around the anchorage or marina.

For sailing in Greece the most popular cruising guides are written by Rod and Lucinda Heikel and published by Imray. They have four different books:

  • Greek Waters Pilot
  • West Aegean
  • East Aegean

I recommend getting at least the Greek Waters Pilot, which contains a wealth of useful information!

5. Is Sailing in Greece Safe?

safe sailing in Greece

This is a question I get a lot, and a concern of mine as well each time I choose a new sailing destination. The last thing we want is for our dinghy to get stolen or our boat to be broken into.

Thankfully, generally speaking, sailing in Greece is safe . It’s a trouble-free country for cruising boats, in particular on the islands.

The main areas where theft is on the rise are around Athens and the major harbors and resorts.

While sailing around the Greek islands you don’t have to worry too much. Just secure your boat and belongings, as you would anywhere.

6. Renting a Boat in Greece – Different Types of Charters

renting a boat in Greece

If you decide to charter a boat in Greece you have various options. You can choose a ‘bareboat charter’, meaning without a skipper, you can charter a boat with a skipper, or you could rent a yacht with a full crew.

Before exploring all the charter possibilities, it’s wise to decide where in Greece you would like to sail and base your decision on what’s available there.

Much like sailing in the rest of the Mediterranean, the weather can change quickly in Greece and that might mean you’ll have to move anchorage. And sometimes that means a long sail to a next protected anchorage. Preparing yourself well and checking weather forecasts daily is very important.

But if you don’t feel like skippering a boat yourself in these changing conditions, chartering a boat with a skipper, who knows the sailing conditions in Greece well and will make sure you are going to the best places depending on the weather, is a great option.

Plus, your skipper will help you to get to know more about local islands, the best anchorages, restaurants, bays, and beaches.

To step it up a notch, you can also rent a yacht in Greece with a full crew. Besides a professional skipper the crewed yacht will have a host, a professional cook, and, depending on the size of the yacht, one or more deckhands.

If you know how to sail, then renting a sailboat in Greece without a skipper is perfect. Don’t let the changing winds put you off, Greece is a great sailing destination that offers easy island hopping and so many places to explore!

Perhaps you are dreaming about sailing around the world ? The Greek Islands are a great place to build some miles and gain sailing experience while also exploring one of the best sailing destinations in the Mediterranean.

Two popular websites to find boats to charter in Greece, for a wide range of budgets, are Sailo and Click and Boat .

Conclusion: Greece is a Great Sailing Destination!

Sunset in Kythnos, the Cyclades

Whether you want to charter a boat in Greece or sail your own boat here, Greece is an incredible sailing destination.

You could sail to a different island every day and see so much of Greece in just a few weeks.

But, I’d recommend taking your time. Explore different anchorages, swim in Greece’s beautiful waters, go ashore to get to know the rich history, and of course enjoy all the delicious food the country has to offer!

Special Cruising Requirements & Documentation For Greece

  • Individual passports of all crew members are inspected on entry into Greece aboard a yacht, as is the case on departure with the same yacht. If leaving or arriving by other means (e.g. by air or ferry), documents will be inspected by Immigration at the point of arrival/exit and any visa (if required) date stamped.
  • All non-EU yachts must clear in with the port police, Customs, Health, Immigration and Currency Control on arrival. The ship’s papers – including detailed crew list – will be inspected by the port police and cruising tax levied as detailed below.
  • EU-registered yachts need only report to the port police office at their first port of call with their documents and pay the cruising tax as detailed below. Proof of VAT payment may be required but in practice is rarely asked for.
  • Yachts must carry their original registration documents and ship’s radio station licence – one member of the crew must be in possession of a certificate to operate the radio/VHF
  • 293,470 EURO liability for death or injury by sinking, collision or other cause for crew and third parties,
  • 146,753 EURO for damage,
  • 88,041 EURO for pollution.
  • The skipper should have an International Certificate of Competence (although in practice this is rarely requested)
  • For non-EU citizens, nights should be spent on board (not in hotels ashore, etc) – if not, the Harbour Master and the Immigration officer should be notified
  • The registered yacht owner/skipper should be on board. If handing the boat’s command to someone else, ensure that the proper documentation is obtained from the Port Police
  • Fishing is only allowed with a snorkel in certain areas. Fishing with scuba gear is prohibited
  • To protect archaeological sites, scuba diving is restricted – permission should be sought locally
  • Chartering by foreign yachts is now allowed, but the vessel must be inspected and certificated according to Greek law, a process that involves a huge amount of red tape

Fees and Charges

  • From 1 January 2014  all boats entering Greek waters are subject to a new cruising tax, irrespective of how long they stay. The tax is levied as follows:  Overall length 7m – 8m: €200; 8m – 10m: €300; 10m – 12m: €400; Over 12m: €100/metre.  There is a 30 per cent reduction for yachts permanently kept in Greece. For yachts over 12m, it is also possible to pay the tax on a monthly basis at a rate of €10 per metre. It appears that this new tax will replace all other current taxes, including the  Transit Log , but until it is fully in force this is not absolutely certain.  Athene of Lymington
  • EU-registered yachts have for a number of years been required to obtain a  Dekpa at their first port of call at a cost of 30 EURO, to be presented for stamping on arrival at and departure from each subsequent port of call. The  Dekpa  is valid until there is no more space for stamps, when a new one must be purchased. In practice, it is only required to be presented once a month for stamping. Currently it appears that the issuing and stamping of the  Dekpa  will continue after 2014 (when new regulations are due to be introduced to coincide with the introduction of the new cruising tax).
  • Note:The Depka situation has changed from 14/4/2014. The Greek law is number 4256/2014 and the main points that affect private cruising boats are as follows: 1. it is only necessary for Greek flagged and EU flagged boats to obtain a DEKPA stamp once per calendar year (this will be when you pay the cruising tax – whenever they start collecting that). 2. Greek flagged and EU flagged boats only need to visit the port police on first entry to Greece and then only once per calendar year (Chapter D Article 10.1a). 3. Greek flagged and EU flagged boats do not need to report to the port police on entry or exit to/from any Greek ports (Chapter D Article 10.2). 4. The Depka requirement applies to yachts over 7.0 metres (previously, it applied only to yachts over 9.0 metres).

Transit Log

  • As of 1st October 2015 Greece has re-adopted the EU-wide protocol for non-EU flagged yachts. Non-EU fagged yachts will be issued with a Transit Log on first entry to Greece that allows VAT-free movement anywhere in EU waters (including Greece of course) for up to 18 months. The EU rules also allow for an extension to 24 months, Greece has indicated that this extension will be available on application (HMRC in the UK reserves it for ‘exceptional circumstances’). The 18 month clock can be stopped by placing the boat in customs bond (which in Greece means on the hard and local customs advised). Neither the EU, nor Greece, specifies how long a boat must be out of EU waters before it can return for another 18 month Transit Log. It is likely in Greece that evidence of leaving the EU will be required (a marina receipt for example) but it should be possible, on expiry of the 18 month Transit Log, to pop over to Turkey for a night and then return to Greece and obtain another 18 month Transit Log. The TPP (cruising tax) will have to be paid by non-EU flagged yachts at the same rates as EU flagged yachts (when and if it is ever introduced).
  • Note that these provisions only apply to non-EU flagged yachts that are owned by a non-EU resident. Non-EU flagged yachts owned by EU residents will be given a Transit Log valid for only 30 days, after which the yacht must either permanently leave EU waters or be imported into an EU country and VAT paid. This provision is to allow EU residents to purchase a yacht that is not VAT paid in the EU and export it.

Other charges

  • All public harbours charge a mooring or anchoring fee based on the tonnage and length of the yacht that is  usually around €8 for an 11.0 metre yacht, payable to the port police. Boats from EU countries pay lower fees than those from non-EU countries, while Greek flagged boats pay even less. A debate is currently taking place in the Greek marine ministry as to whether the new cruising tax should replace these local payments entirely –  Athene of Lymington .
  • If a boat is stored ashore a ‘lift permission’ is required, and a ‘launch permission’ to launch it. These are obtainable from the Port Police and cost a few euros – and some tax. Good boatyards will obtain these for you.
  • Note:Non-EU boats may now be charged by the port police a fee (I paid 672 Euros in 2014 for a 10 metre sailboat) that was originally applied to non-EU fishing boats. I was told that this is a one time fee, due when a non-EU boat enters Greece for the first time. The port police in Lavrion are charging this fee but I am not aware of any other port police who are doing so. — Daphnoula .

Mykonos yacht charters.

Boats moored at Mykonos marina

Mykonos yacht charters have attracted well-heeled guests time after time with the island's sugar-cubed villages combined with cosmopolitan allure. Mykonos' main attraction is undeniably its vibrant nightlife; amid its myriad seafront bars and clubs, partygoers dance till dawn under rose-gold skies. But this is not the island's only appeal.

Wander around the enchanting vividly-colored houses of Little Venice as the sun sets; savor a candlelit meal at one of its many fine-dining options (such as Nobu); and discover some of the magnificent bays such as Ornos . Of course, there are also a vast array of beaches to bronze on: from the iconic Paradise Beach  to the hip and happening Psarou or the more tranquil Agios Sostis .

Vouliagmeni Yacht Charters

Beautiful lake in Vouliagmeni

A Vouliagmeni yacht charter is highly exclusive, with the idyllic coastal town being a popular superyacht haven for vacations beginning or ending in Athens. Located 13 miles southeast of the capital, yacht charter guests can moor here with ease at its peaceful bay. It's an absolute must whilst you are here to take a dip in the emerald-hued waters of the lake, hugged by soaring cliffs and gently warmed by thermal springs. For the more adventurous, be sure to make the most of the bountiful underwater caves.

Santorini Yacht Charters

View of colorful houses in Oia, Greece

A Santorini yacht charter is a firm favorite amongst discerning travelers who fall in love with its endless, dramatic beauty at every turn. Dappled with whitewashed cottages and cerulean-hued domed churches tumbling down the hillsides of  Oia to and up to the capital of Firá , guests have no shortage of backdrops for sunset tipples or sights to gaze at. Visiting the world-famous Red beach in nearby Akrotiri village whilst you are here is also a must.

Santorini is also superbly located for cruising towards the crystalline shores of Magganari beach on Ios island: an ideal location for snorkeling or taking out the toys.

Hydra Yacht Charters

Crystal blue shores of old main port in Hydra, Greece

Jetsetters have long adored Hydra for yacht charters , largely owing to its heavenly seascapes. The sheltered island enthralls guests onshore, who feel as if they have stepped into a bygone era: no cars roam around, just donkeys who hobble around its picture-perfect, labyrinthine streets and harbor. Soaring escarpments set the scene for sun-drenched meals under a lingering sun, with seafood served so fresh that it's practically dripping straight from the water. Admire also the innumerable secret coves and bays to be found here, many of which can be explored on your tenders.

Milos Yacht Charters

Kleftiko Bay, Greece

The luminous, volcanic island of Milos and its fabulously turquoise bays are a superyacht favorite, yet remain largely undiscovered to the wider public. But why do the elite cruise towards its shores? For the staggeringly beautiful beaches (more than 70 of them, in fact) perfect for bringing out the water toys.

The spellbinding Kleftiko bay , the geothermal Paliochori beach, and the surreal charms of Sarakiniko beach  (with its moon-like surfaces flecked by countless caves) are popular spots here. Abound with ancient ruins, make sure you also pay a visit to the Catacombs of Milos near the village of Tripiti , and the achingly pretty hilltop Venetian Castle of Milos .

History and Culture

Greece's location at the confluence of the East and West, as well as its Roman and Ottoman occupations, have had a huge cultural and historical impact that can be still felt today in terms of cuisine and architecture.

Greeks are fiercely proud of their heritage and culture. Marvelous regional traditions permeate mainland Greece and the Greek islands, ranging from religion to music, language to food and even wine, making a Greek yacht charter a truly thrilling experience.

Types of Yacht Charters in Greece

Superyacht Irimari underway in Greek waters

Greece has a very diverse yacht charter market, so you can be sure to find the perfect yacht for you and your charter party. There’s a wide variety of motor yachts for charter , as well as sailing yachts and traditional Turkish gulets.

However, be aware that all yachts wishing to begin or end a yacht charter in Greece must be in possession of a valid Greek charter license. Speak to a  yacht charter broker for more information.

If you’re unsure about the type of yacht you’d like to charter, here are some things to consider first.

Motor Yacht Charters in Greece

Charter yacht at anchor in a quiet cove in greece

For those looking to rent a motor yacht  in Greece, you’ll find a wide range to choose from.

The most common type of motor yacht you can hire in Greece is a yacht with a planing hull. Stylish, sporty and speedy, they’re great for zipping between islands quickly and ensuring you get the most out of your itinerary. If you’re looking to spend most of your time on land or splashing in the sea, a yacht with a planing hull is the top choice for you.

You’ll also find a superb selection of displacement and semi-displacement superyachts at your disposal (pictured above). These are typically larger and more stable at anchor, with more onboard space for facilities and amenities such as gyms, movie theaters and wellness suites. They’re ideal if you’re chartering with a large group, particularly one that includes children.

Sailing Yacht Charters in Greece

Greece is a playground for sailing yacht rentals , with plenty of yachts available throughout summer. A combination of light winds, clear skies and plenty of anchorages create great sailing conditions across all the islands.

The most popular destinations for sailing charters are typically Corfu, Kefalonia , and the Sporades Islands . Other destinations are equally desirable, including the Cyclades and the Dodecanese islands - but be aware that these areas typically encounter more winds. This means it might be more challenging to drop anchor, and you will have to consider spending more nights in port.

Gulet Yacht Charters in Greece

Gulet yacht at anchor in Greece

A gulet is a traditionally Turkish-built sailing yacht made out of wood. They are usually two or three-masted and are typically much larger than your average sailing yacht.   Luxury gulet yacht charters  in Greece are very appealing alternatives to both sailing and motor yacht charter. While they usually rely on their motor underway, they are very fuel-efficient and don't require a lot of fuel to get from point A to point B. They have displacement hulls which make them very stable and seaworthy, and typically offer lots of volume and open-plan living spaces.

Greek gulet yachts also tend to be cheaper than other types of charter as they sometimes offer all-inclusive or semi-inclusive packages, meaning you don’t need to worry about additional expenses such as food and drink. They also normally include a standard number of cruising hours per day.  Plus, their crew are often local to the region that they cruise in, meaning they can double as tour guides and have a lot of expertise and valuable insight into the area.

But be aware- many gulets are Turkish-flagged, meaning they will need to hold a Greek charter license to start or finish a charter in Greece.

How Much Does it Cost to Charter a Yacht in Greece?

The price of a Greece yacht charter vacation varies depending on a number of factors, including the type of yacht, the age of the yacht, and the month in which you choose to charter.

  • A Greece motor yacht rental can range from $33,000 to $1.8m per week plus expenses
  • A sailing yacht charter in Greece averages from $27,200 to $559k weekly plus expenses

In Greece, VAT on a yacht charter is charged at 24% and is based on the value of the yacht. However, this figure can be reduced if the yacht meets specific criteria.

The three tax brackets are as follows;

  • VAT at full 24%: applies to charters that take place in Greek waters without exiting to non-EU or International waters (Staying within the six nautical miles limit)
  • VAT at 24%: with a deduction option for time spent outside of EU waters or in international waters.
  • Discounted at 50% (VAT 12%):for yachts that spend a minimum of 60 % of charter time/days outside of territorial waters. (Territorial waters are considered: six nautical miles from the mainland and six nautical miles from the territorial waters of an island). This also applies to yachts charters commencing outside EU territory and that remain outside for more than 60% of the chartered days and end their charter in Greece.

Greek Charter Licences Explained

When is the Best Time for Greek Yacht Charters?

Quiet cove in Greece

The best time for Greek yacht rentals is between July and August, but warm weather typically extends well into September and even May in certain destinations. The peak of the charter season is usually July, although August historically has the hottest temperatures.

Between June and August, you can expect highs of 85 - 90 degrees Fahrenheit (26 - 32 degrees Celsius) in Athens, with even hotter temperatures recorded further south.

Where Should I Begin My Greece Yacht Charter?

Aerial view of Piraeus, the busiest passenger port in Europe

By far the most common embarkation point for a  Greece yacht rental vacation is Athens . Around 90% of the Greek charter fleet has a homeport in Athens, and there are numerous luxury marinas that cater to superyachts.

However, for those looking to charter around the Ionian Islands in destinations like Corfu , Cephalonia and Zakynthos , you may wish to begin your charter closer to your desired destination.

It is possible to begin or end your charter elsewhere in Greece. However, you may have to consider the cost of repositioning as the fleet is mostly based out of Athens.

If you want to meet the yacht elsewhere – for example, Santorini, Mykonos –  you can expect to pay a hefty repositioning fee. It’s generally more economical to begin your Greek yacht charter in Athens and spend the day cruising to your desired start point, enjoying your yacht to the fullest, and soaking up the scenery as you travel underway.

Where to Find a Yacht Slip in Greece

Exploring secluded coves - luxury yacht charter vacation

Around the main yachting hubs of Greece, you’ll find plenty of marinas that cater to a variety of yachts of different sizes. However, be aware that Greece doesn’t have as many big marinas as destinations such as the South of France or Italy , and demand for slips can be very high in peak season.

  • Zea Marina:  located in Piraeus, Athens, which is the largest seaport in Greece and one of the largest harbors in all of Europe. It's a hive of activity, offering 670 slips up to 150m.
  • Athens Marina : revered marina, accommodating 130 slips measuring up to 130m. Provides plenty of amenities on land, including a helipad service.
  • Flisvos Marina: award-winning and perfect for starting and ending a charter. Located 6km from Athens city center, with a 303 slip capacity (up to 70m). Well-equipped facilities and high-end restaurants at your disposal when you dock here.
  • Kos Marina: close to the enchanting island's old harbor, this marina has a capacity for up to 250 slips with a maximum length of 80m. Provides an excellent array of facilities and dining options.
  • Rhodes Marina:  world-class marina complete with a stunning backdrop. Can accommodate a staggering 382 yachts with a maximum length of 120m.

Where to End a Greece Yacht Charter

Beginning or ending your yacht charter in Athens, one of the most exciting cities in the world, is a popular choice. Be sure to explore this historic destination in all its glory before you leave.

How to Book Your Yacht Charter in Greece

Planning your yacht charter with a Broker

Greece is one of the most popular charter destinations in the Mediterranean. Therefore, advanced booking (three to six months ahead) is absolutely essential in order to secure your dream yacht on your preferred dates in the perfect destination.

When it comes to Greece yacht rentals, many charterers are repeat clients; meaning they’ve already booked the yacht once, fallen in love with the yacht and its crew, and chosen to return again to explore a new destination. This means that competition for yachts is fierce and it’s even more crucial to kickstart the booking process early.

Don’t forget that your choice of yachts in Greece is comparatively smaller than Italy or the South of France since all yachts beginning or ending a charter yacht in Greece must have a Greek charter license.

That said, it is possible for a foreign-flagged yacht to charter in Greece so long as the charter begins and ends in international waters, such as Italy and Albania for yacht charters around the Ionian Islands or Turkey for charters around the Aegean islands.

Greece Yacht Charter Q&A

Most itineraries for yachts around Greece begin in Athens because around 90% of the charter fleet in Greece has a homeport in Athens. Therefore, the yachts are usually based in the country’s capital, and you will most likely have to pay a repositioning fee if you’d like to begin elsewhere in Greece.

A Greek yacht charter license is a special permit that allows yachts to begin and end a yacht charter in Greece. Not all yachts hold a Greek charter license, so you will need to speak to your charter broker for more information about starting and finishing a charter in Greek waters.

You could start a yacht charter in Mykonos, but you will most likely have to pay a hefty repositioning fee as most yachts have their homeport in Athens. To get the most out of your yacht charter, it’s usually best to begin in Athens and spend the night underway to reach Mykonos.

The most popular destinations for sailing vacations in Greece are the Ionian Islands. However, great sailing conditions exist across the country, and other popular hotspots include the Dodecanese Islands, the Sporades Islands and the Saronic Islands.

The standard Value Added Tax (VAT) is 24%, and it is calculated based on the value of the yacht. The VAT can be reduced in certain circumstances; read our guide above.

The Cyclades Islands of Santorini, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos are great for exploring on a luxury yacht charter during summer. The best times to visit are between June and September when you can expect long days and warm sea temperatures. The beach clubs of Mykonos will be in full swing, and the island of Santorini will be alive with activity.

Some Countries Are Trying a Four-Day Workweek. Greece Wants a Six-Day One.

The country, which already has the European Union’s longest average workweek, wants to add another day in some cases, bucking a growing business trend.

A group of people stand holding orange flags.

By Niki Kitsantonis and Amelia Nierenberg

Niki Kitsantonis reported from Athens, and Amelia Nierenberg from London.

As the rest of the world zigs toward a four-day workweek, Greece is opting to zag.

On Monday, a law came into effect that allows some companies to enforce a six-day workweek, a shift that is intended to prop up the country’s aging work force and compensate strapped workers, while respecting workers’ rights.

The law applies to private sector workers in certain industrial and manufacturing sectors, or to those who work in a business that operates continuous shifts 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with some exceptions. And it would be allowed only “in exceptional circumstances,” like an unexpectedly increased workload.

Labor unions, which have long pushed for better working conditions and rights, have opposed the move. It has prompted a fierce debate and, when the bill was approved last year, protests. Greece already has the longest average workweek in the European Union, and it is not clear whether the extended workweek will bolster productivity.

The action in Greece stands in sharp contrast to much of the world. Senator Bernie Sanders, independent of Vermont, in March pushed to reduce the standard workweek in the United States to 32 hours from 40 hours. Trials have been carried out in Britain , Iceland and New Zealand , at least in part as a response to the drastic shifts in work that were precipitated by the coronavirus pandemic .

Here’s what to know about Greece’s overtime measure.

Why do some think a six-day model could help?

Greece is dealing with a shortage of skilled labor, as are its peers in the European Union.

Conservative lawmakers in the country have billed the law as a way to provide more resources for employers, while providing additional income for workers.

The extra day, said Niki Kerameus, the labor and social insurance minister, will allow employers to address “urgent operational demands” that cannot be met given the current supply of workers, and will also put more money in the pockets of employees.

According to the law, workers get an extra 40 percent on their sixth day. This rises to 115 percent if that day falls on a Sunday or a public holiday. Some workers are already working more than 40 hours per week without getting paid for the extra time, and backers of the new measure say it affords them protections because employers would have to declare extra hours to the government.

The labor shortage has its roots partly in the financial crisis that began in 2009. Huge numbers of workers, most of them young Greeks, went abroad in search of better prospects, and some companies cut back on training and development, adding to the problem.

The boom that came after provided welcome financial relief, but it also left employers short handed as the economy rebounded. Greece has struggled to deal with a huge influx of migrants in recent years, but it is now offering some more established migrants residency and work permits, as well as signing deals with other countries to bring in more workers for certain sectors like agriculture.

How have critics responded?

The Greek government has sought to downplay the implications of the move, stressing that it was an “an exceptional measure” that “does not affect in any way the established five-day working week,” Ms. Kerameus said.

But many, especially on the left, are furious.

Syriza, the leftist opposition party, denounced what it called “a return to working conditions of the 19th century that puts the country to shame.”

Nikos Fotopoulos, the general secretary of Greece’s private sector labor union, excoriated the measure in an open letter to Ms. Kerameus, the labor minister, calling the government “the most barbaric, most anti-worker government ever.”

Nearly one in five Greek adults were at risk of poverty last year, according to the research institute of Greece’s private sector workers’ union, and Mr. Fotopoulos said the government’s argument that workers can forgo the extra day did not hold up.

“Which worker, with the unemployment and poverty we have, would dare to say no to unchecked employers who you’ve allowed to treat workers like their slaves?” Mr. Fotopoulos wrote.

What’s the case for a four-day workweek?

Supporters of a four-day workweek say it could have significant benefits for employers and employees.

The logic? Fewer hours at the office should mean that the time there should be more productive. Workers, according to the theory, will have more energy and incentive to power through the 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. need-a-snack lull, or other periods when fatigue sets in and their minds begin to drift.

“When people work less, they tend to work smarter,” said Dale Whelehan, the chief executive of 4 Day Week Global , a nonprofit group. “As a result, they cut out unproductive time within their work and are able to get more done in less time.”

The evidence is still emerging, but a British trial run — conducted by Dr. Whelehan’s group — seemed to have favorable results. In a survey about halfway through the study, which took place in 2022, most of the companies reported no loss of productivity during the trial.

How does the productivity argument play out in Greece?

Greece had the longest average workweek in the European Union last year. Working-age people spent an average of 39.8 hours at their jobs, compared with the bloc’s average of 36.1 hours.

So while Greece is looking to extend the workweek in certain cases, backers of the four-day workweek like to emphasize that less can sometimes be more when it comes to productivity.

And Greece’s productivity has long been lower than the European Union’s average . Data from Eurostat , the bloc’s statistics agency, shows that Greek productivity per working hour was 30 percent lower than the bloc’s average last year.

“It offers an incentive to workers who want to boost their salary — while also increasing fair play by employers,” said Emmanouil Savoidakis, a lawyer based in Athens, who said some of his clients in manufacturing have already expressed interest. “Anyone who wants to boost production has to do it subject to certain rules and pay the overtime.”

Fishing boat carrying 283 migrants to Europe safely reaches southern Greek island

  • Copy Link copied

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — A fishing boat carrying nearly 300 migrants to Europe has safely reached a southern Greek island after a large rescue operation in the Mediterranean Sea, Greek authorities said Monday.

There were no immediate reports of injury or ill health among the 283 migrants, the coast guard said.

A coast guard statement said a search was launched before dawn Monday after authorities were notified that a vessel carrying migrants was hit by high winds south of Crete.

Two coast guard vessels, four merchant ships and two smaller private boats took part in the operation, and the migrant vessel was located 18 nautical miles (20 miles) south of Gavdos, a small island off southern Crete. The fishing boat was finally able to reach the port of Gavdos with its own engines, and the migrants safely disembarked.

There was no immediate information as to the nationalities of the migrants, or where they had departed from.

Tiny Gavdos in recent months has become an important destination for migrant boats crossing the Mediterranean from eastern Libya. Typically, people from the Middle East, Africa and Asia seeking a better life in Europe pay thousands of dollars to smugglers for a spot on the dangerous, overcrowded vessels.

In June 2023, a rusty trawler that was carrying an estimated 750 people from Tobruk in eastern Libya to Italy sank off southwestern Greece leaving hundreds feared drowned. Only 104 passengers survived, and 82 bodies were recovered.

The coast guard said the migrants who reached Gavdos Monday were transported to southern Crete, from which they would be taken to the western port town of Chania.

Elon Musk mocks Mark Zuckerberg's big hydrofoil swag moment, says he prefers to work instead of having fun on yachts

  • Elon Musk has weighed in on Mark Zuckerberg's latest viral stunt.
  • The Meta CEO posted a video of himself hydrofoiling while wearing a tuxedo. Musk wasn't impressed.
  • "May he continue to have fun on his yachts. I prefer to work," Musk said of the video.

Insider Today

Mark Zuckerberg may have wowed his fans with a badass video of himself hydrofoiling on Independence Day, but Elon Musk certainly doesn't seem impressed.

"May he continue to have fun on his yachts. I prefer to work," Musk wrote in an X post in response to the video .

Zuckerberg went viral on Thursday after he posted a video of himself surfing on a hydrofoil to Facebook and Instagram. In the clip, the Meta CEO can be seen waving an American flag and taking sips from a can of beer, all while dressed to the nines in a tuxedo.

"Happy birthday, America!" Zuckerberg captioned his post.

Representatives for Musk and Zuckerberg didn't immediately respond to requests for comment from BI sent outside regular business hours.

This, of course, isn't the first time Musk has thrown shade at his tech-world nemesis.

In June 2023, Musk challenged Zuckerberg to a cage match following reports that said Meta was building an X rival .

Zuckerberg initially agreed to the request but brushed aside the proposal after months of back and forth. Musk, however, hasn't forgotten about the fight.

"If only Zuckerberg were as tough (sigh). I've offered to fight him any place, any time, any rules, but all I hear is crickets," Musk said in an X post on May 15, a day after Zuckerberg celebrated his 40th birthday .

Zuckerberg isn't the only yacht-owning billionaire that Musk has accused of being a slouch.

In 2021, Musk made a similar remark about his fellow space baron, Jeff Bezos . The SpaceX CEO told the Financial Times in an interview then that Bezos should spend more time on his rocket company, Blue Origin.

"As a friend of mine says, he should spend more time at Blue Origin and less time in the hot tub," Musk told the outlet.

Bezos, it seems, paid no mind to Musk's zinger and has gone on to enjoy some hot yacht summers.

To be sure, Musk is no stranger to yachts.

In July 2022, he was seen lounging on a yacht in Mykonos, Greece, with Endeavor CEO Ari Emanuel and his fashion designer wife, Sarah Staudinger.

"Haha damn, maybe I should take off my shirt more often … free the nip!! (already back in the factory btw)," Musk wrote in an X post on July 18, 2022.

That getaway was a rare moment for Musk, who's famously said that he hates taking vacations.

Musk once came close to dying in 2000 when he contracted malaria while vacationing in South Africa.

Musk said the trip, which he took after Peter Thiel ousted him as PayPal CEO, was his first real vacation from work. Musk was booted from PayPal while on his honeymoon with his first wife, Justine Musk, a few months earlier. "In the last 12 years, I only tried to take a week off twice," he said in 2015 . "The first time I took a week off, the Orbital Sciences rocket exploded, and Richard Branson's rocket exploded in that same week."

"The second time I took a week off, my rocket exploded ," Musk said.

"The lesson here is, don't take a week off," he added.

Greece is moving some workers toward a 6-day workweek

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

The workweek is about to get a lot longer for some employees in Greece.

Starting July 1, workers in the private sector could be going into the office six days a week—as the 48-hour workweek goes into effect .

Select industrial and manufacturing facilities, along with businesses that provide 24/7 services, are eligible to extend the workweek beyond five days under new labor laws. Food service and tourism workers are not included in the longer workweeks.

The change to the labor laws was approved last September following productivity issues in the country, which have led many workers to put in extra hours and often not be compensated for the time. Officials also note there has been a shortage of skilled workers due to a shrinking population.

Workers who do put in the extra time will receive 40% extra during the additional eight hours—and 115% of their normal salary if they work on a holiday.

Employers who decide to embrace the 48-hour workweek will be required to notify employees at least 24 hours before the shift begins. No additional overtime beyond the eight hours is allowed.

The new rules were not met with widespread acceptance ahead of their approval. The day before the bill was passed, public sector workers, such as teachers, doctors, and transportation workers, walked off the job in protest, calling the overhaul an affront to workers’ rights that could create “ barbaric ” conditions.

Workers in Greece already work more than those in the U.S. and most of Europe. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) notes Greeks worked an average of 1,886 hours in 2022, compared to 1,811 in the U.S. and the European Union average of 1,571.

Greece’s unorthodox approach to labor comes as many other regions are experimenting with a four-day workweek. Last year, the results of the world’s largest trial of the shorter schedule showed workers who put in four days were just as productive as they were during a five-day week. The nonprofit that ran the pilot program called it a “resounding success on virtually every dimension.”

Last March, one member of California’s legislature floated legislation for a 32-hour workweek to become national law, with the backing of the AFL-CIO and the Economic Policy Institute. The bill failed to find traction.

Greece's new 6-day workweek law takes effect, bucking a trend

For most people, working five days a week is plenty. How about six?

Greece enacted a new employment law this week that lays out a six-day workweek — at a time when dozens of other countries are increasingly seeing positive results from experiments with four-day workweeks.

Law 5053/2023, passed by parliament last fall, says an employee cannot work more than 8 hours on the additional day, according to the official Government Gazette . The employee would be paid 40% overtime for the sixth day’s wages.

These companies tried a 4-day workweek. More than a year in, they still love it

These companies tried a 4-day workweek. More than a year in, they still love it

Workers in Greece have been sharply critical of the change, saying the last thing they need in an era of rising cost-of-living expenses is to be on the hook to work an extra day each week.

The new system allows employers to decide unilaterally whether a worker should come in on a sixth day. It leaves intact rules that allowed the option of a six-day workweek, in which employees work 6.5 hours for a total of 40 hours weekly, as Greek public broadcaster ERTNews reports.

Why shift to 6 days of work?

The government is giving multiple reasons.

In one explanation, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis' administration says that clearing the way to make six days of work mandatory was necessary due to “the twin perils of a shrinking population and shortage of skilled workers,” according to The Guardian , which cites statements from when the legislation was adopted last year.

The government also says that setting formal rules about a six-day workweek would fight the phenomena of undeclared work and also increase the income of employees, according to a message from the Labor Ministry in late June .

The law specifies 24-hour operations

The new law applies to companies that operate continuously around the clock seven days a week, and to companies that adopt heavy shift work to cope with an unforeseen increased workload. Employers that want to bring their workers in for a sixth day are required to notify a labor inspector before the added shift.

The law doesn’t apply to people employed in hotel and food service industries — but the Athens Labor Unions Organization, or EKA, says those businesses have already been allowed to institute six-day workweeks.

Unions condemn the new law

Protests quickly erupted over the added workday. And with Greece also contending with several dangerous wildfires , Mitsotakis was criticized as being out of touch when, on Tuesday, he posted a photo of himself smiling and standing next to singer Chris Martin and the rest of the band Coldplay.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kyriakos Mitsotakis (@kyriakos_)

Greece’s large labor unions, including the Greek General Confederation of Labour , have pushed back both on the law and the way it’s being enforced.

Workers in Greece rank low in wage surveys

“Greece has the 7th highest average working time among the 38 countries of the [OECD] but is also 3rd from the bottom in average wages,” the news site Greek Reporter said in May.

Greece raised its national monthly minimum wage for workers in the spring, to 830 euros ($897). It was the fourth wage increase in five years, Reuters reported .

AtlantiCare nurse manager Kathryn Dixon sits with her laptop at a desk.

These nurse managers were burnt out. Then their hospital gave them a 4-day workweek

Before she was replaced last month, then-Minister of Labor and Social Security Domna Michailidou said the administration wants to keep raising the minimum wage , with the goal of hitting 950 euros ($1,027) within the next four years.

Greece’s economy has navigated numerous crises in recent decades. Despite recent gains, it remains well below the highs it achieved in 2007 and 2008 in terms of GDP per capita, according to the EU’s statistics database . That stands in contrast to many similarly sized economies in Europe, which have either mirrored or surpassed those earlier highs.

Why work four days a week when you can work six? Greece gives it a shot.

New legislation for a longer workweek in Greece took effect in July as other countries pilot and adopt four-day workweeks.

work on a yacht in greece

While the four-day workweek has picked up steam in many European countries and even at some U.S. companies, Greece is going in the opposite direction.

The country’s new legislation, which took effect this week, introduced a six-day workweek for businesses that operate 24 hours with the goal of boosting productivity. Workers have the option to work up to 48 hours per week, and those who work the extra day will get a 40 percent bump in overtime pay .

The plan bucks the trend of shortening the workweek to four days, which research has shown benefits productivity and employee well-being and satisfaction. Greece’s government suggests the move will relieve labor shortages, ensure workers get paid for overtime and address tax evasion issues as it relates to undeclared work. But worker advocates say that Greece’s new legislation probably won’t produce the desired results and instead could cause unintended consequences such as high turnover, burnout, illness and even death .

“It definitely feels like a step in the wrong direction and shortsighted,” said Malissa Clark, director of the University of Georgia’s Healthy Work Lab, which studies work-life balance. “We know long work hours are detrimental to employee health.”

In the U.S., 77 percent of workers believe a four-day, 40-hour workweek would have an extremely or somewhat positive effect on their well-being, according to a recent Gallup survey . U.S. companies that have piloted or adopted shortened workweeks say they have seen the benefits.

Danielle Abril

In many parts of Asia and other developing countries , a six-day work week is routine. But globally, more countries are also looking at slashing hours. France is among the most recent countries to pilot a four-day workweek, and Belgium became the first country to officially approve the shortened week back in 2022. Other countries that have been experimenting with the four-day workweek include Iceland, Japan and South Africa.

But hurdles to the wide adoption of the shorter week persist as many worry about staffing issues, potential productivity drops, increased costs and complex changes to operations.

How can I keep my energy up as I age?

Greece’s move goes against much research that shows increasing hours actually hurts productivity rather than boosts it, said Brigid Schulte, director of the work-family justice program Better Life Lab at think tank New America. Instead, increasing hours often leads to workers making more mistakes, being slower on tasks, and suffering from exhaustion, stress and illness.

“The proof will be in the evidence,” Schulte said. “If all of a sudden Greece turns around its economy, maybe people will take a second look. But I don’t think that will happen.”

Schulte also said policies like this often hurt caregivers and women, which then lowers employee and leadership diversity and increases the gender pay gap.

Greece’s legislation opens the door to allowing people to work a 48-hour workweek but does not require it. And European Union laws require employers to ensure employees don’t exceed 48 hours per week on average, including overtime. But Clark says Greece’s legislation only creates the perception of choice because the increase in pay incentivizes people to work longer.

“You’re making it difficult to turn [the pay] down,” she said. “Also what are the norms and expectations going to be in the organization?”

While Greece is going against the grain and adoption of the shorter workweek has been slow, Schulte and Clark say future trends probably indicate fewer working hours versus more. Companies will continue learning how to make their processes more efficient, leverage tech and discover the benefits to workers and profits, they predict.

“It’s like an organizational excellence mission in disguise,” Schulte said. “Shorter work hours is better for business, people and the economy, if you do it right.”
