DESIGN RULES
The largest of the models sailed by RCMSC members, this 37 inch long wood hull sloop sports a 45 inch mast with 635.5 total square inches of sail area (mainsail is 391.1 square inches and jib sail is 244 square inches). A 7 inch beam gives her a sleek profile; and a shallow keel-fin depth of 11.5 inches allows her to be launched at shoreline. A finished weight of just under 5 pounds and a removable mast make her easy to transport. A 2-channel radio controls both sails and rudder.
One of the few all wood sailboats to be sanctioned by the AMYA, the T37 is unique for its lack of internal framing or bulkheads. The 1/8 inch mahogany hull sides, bottom and deck are instead joined using a West System epoxy that results in a light, strong composite boat. Available in kit form (see kit package pictured below) or as a sail-ready model, the T37 comes complete with electronics, sails of nylon spinnaker cloth, solid brass or marine grade stainless steal fittings, and lead ballast. Builders need only supply batteries and paint or varnish. A racing upgrade is available and recommended for both the kit and assembled model. Included in the upgrade are a double throw sheeting system, CF booms, boom-vang system, and ultra torque HS-645 metal gear sail servo. In 2020 the sheeting system, trim adjustments and boom vang where all updated in the latest Racing kite/upgrade, instructions and retrofits are available.
Designed and manufactured by Will Lesh at Tippecanoe Boats in Everson, WA (US), the T37 is a one-design class that allows few variations. The T37 must be assembled using manufacturer’s parts and building instructions, including the choice and placement of electronics. Some discretion is allowed in rigging, rudder configuration, and hull finish. And it is in the finishing that T37 builders may display both craftsmanship and originality. With the silhouette of a classic wooden yacht, the T37 invites a high gloss finish (varnish or paint), raised cabin structure and marine brass bits. Roughly 4000 T37 models are now sailed worldwide. No surprise, the largest contingent of T37 sailors is found in the Pacific Northwest, providing RCMSC members with the opportunity to join other T37 skippers at more than a dozen venues in Oregon and Washington. Several AMYA sanctioned model sailing clubs in the area host T37 regattas, and welcome nonmember participants for a single event fee. The National\International Championships are usually held in the Pacific Northwest. Servos recommended: Sails – Hitec D645MW, Rudder Hitech HS-422 If anyone is looking for a Hitec Digital Servo programmer, Peter has a Hitec DPC-11 which will allow an increase the arm movement from 90 to 180 degrees on Hitec digital servos (120 degree movement recommended). Servo’s from Will/ Tippecanoe already come programmed.

With over 3,075 T37 Racing Sloops sailing across the world, T37 fleets have emerged around the US to bring like-minded sailors and racers together for competitive and fun racing! Whether match-racing with just two boats or sailing with 20 others, T37 sailing is fun for sailors of all ages and experiences. The T37 Class is sanctioned by the American Model Yachting Association!
Some of the biggest T37 fleets are located in the Pacific Northwest; one of the fastest growing of these fleets is the Port Townsend, Washington fleet. Since its formation only a few years ago, the fleet has grown from zero boats to 43 boats. Many of these current fleet members found the fleet by walking past the pond and seeing how much fun other T37 racers were having!
Because the T37 Racing Sloop is a one-design class, sailors do not have to buy expensive boats or fancy sails to ‘get an edge’; instead, T37 racing is about strategy and model boat racing skills. Many of the sailors have never sailed sailboats or model sailboats before racing the T37. Many other T37 sailors have sailed and raced ‘big boats’ for many years; Carl Buchan and Jonathan McKee, who have won Olympic gold racing the Flying Dutchman sailboat, are both active T37 racers (Carl Buchan finished 3rd at the 2012 T37 US National Championships).
For sailors in the Pacific Northwest, the Pacific Northwest Model Yacht Club (pnmyc.org), for many years under the direction of Commodore Allan VanNess, and now under the able leadership of Commodore Ron Knight, organizes many sailing events for sailors across the region from Portland, Oregon to Vancouver, British Columbia. While activities are centered in and around Seattle, PNMYC regattas are also held in the San Juan Islands, Bellingham, and other areas around the Northwest.
PNMYC also hosts the T37 US National Championships (held every October), as well as providing resources for T37 sailors across the country. If you are interested in starting your own T37 fleet in your area, or would like to learn more about racing, PNMYC has many resources!
T37 Racing Sloops are sailed at many clubs across the Northwest (and on the East coast), and they are always looking for more sailors to join the fun!

just put in last year a new beta 35 less than 20 hour on engine, been fooling myself that I can keep the boat but age and money forces me to sell asap, entire deck and cockpit was opened up and all rot replaced, glassed in around chain plates, new auto helm auto pilot, new water heater, new electrical panel, new plumbing, newer reverse cycle AC, new fixtures, new head w/macerator pump (not installed), hull was ground down and repainted flag blue, 5 coats of barrier coat 2 years ago, new extended rub rail, allot of stuff you would normally see in a refit, new windows, what I am unable to complete is the interior and that is why the price is so low. cannot afford to finish the wood work and new cushions and like i say just too old and broke to throw any more money at it. its a steal for someone a bit younger then me that’s a little handy - I’m older and not going to spend allot of time for non serious people I just dont have the time or desire, if your serious and have cash in hand. window shoppers beware

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.
Classic hull speed formula:
Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL
Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL
Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
Nearly the same as the earlier BLACK WATCH 37, but with all glass coach roof instead of wood, for easier maintenance. Available also as a keel-centerboarder (Draft: BD:9.33’/2.84m BU: 3.83’/1.17m) Sloop or yawl. The HOOD 37, built by Little Harbor Yachts, is said to be based on the same design.
