NEW WINDELO 50 SPORT

Features of windelo 50.

The Windelo 50 sets the standard for environmentally friendly fast cruising catamarans. This yacht is equipped to take you to Patagonia via the Pacific Islands, leaving zero carbon footprint, except if you sail under power for a long time. The Windelo 50 delivers outstanding performance and high levels of comfort combined with a sturdiness that inspires trust. This is a yacht that is just begging you to dare to dream. Step aboard and start your own adventure. The Windelo 50 is tailored for sailors with vast horizons. One look at the slightly fuller lines at the entrance than some other catamarans, confirms the architect duo Christophe Barreau and Frederic Neuman have designed a boat that performs well even when it is fully loaded for a blue water adventure. Combine this with a powerful rig, modest displacement, and daggerboards to ensure that you can cover broad stretches of the ocean at speed without having to cut back on vital equipment needed to travel in comfort.

The nacelle: a user-friendly and modular space

The key to the layout was to create a friendly space that worked for everyone and involved everyone. The first essential step was to ensure that the helm station was an integral part of the layout. You can create a spacious unified area where the skipper steps out of isolation and integrates fully into the onboard social life by opening the sliding door between the forward cockpit and the galley. With the help of autopilot, you could easily cook and steer simultaneously! It also means that crew who are relaxing in the saloon are readily available to lend a hand at a moment's notice. There are other thoughtful practical benefits, such as the highly comfortable 115 x 200 cm pilot berth, situated in the main saloon within easy reach of the helm.

There is a chart table at the foot of the forward cockpit in the saloon layout, which makes circulation on board easier. To give you an idea of the space available: the saloon dining table expands to accommodate 6 to 12 people. You can also use an additional outside table for 6 to 12 people at anchor.

Depending on the power output of your solar panels, the nacelle roof can be fitted with sun pads for sunbathing at anchor.

Features of Sport version

Are you looking for a fast, efficient, high-performance sailboat, with comfortable living spaces? Do you love technical innovations and believe that less is more in an environmentally friendly world? Our Sport version is a perfect fit for you. Enjoy managing resources, while achieving your full potential and feel the speed of the wind and the sea spray on your skin. The Sport version is a high-performance boat. We have used top-quality technical materials to reduce the catamaran’s weight (carbon, technical fabrics, etc.) The layout, equipment, and deck gear options also help to make the boat light and optimize performance under sail. The hull structure has been strengthened, yet the boat is lighter, since the composite materials and textiles have been tailored to the structure, indoor fittings, furniture and floors.

The following are available on the sport version as standard:

As part of the creation of new types of catamaran made in Occitanie, an audacious choice of ecological innovation has been selected in partnership with the Materials Center of « Mines d’Alès » (C2MA – IMT MINES ALES) (Gard, France). It’s a question of combining ecological performance in terms of minimizing the environmental footprint and structural resistance, and this, in a global approach of circular economy on all parts of the boat. To do this, and in connection with the IMT MINES ALES, Windelo has relied on the use of secondary raw materials, competitive  virgin petroleum-based materials, that fully comply with the specifications in terms of mechanical performance. This is a real first step to the development of a 2.0 fleet ships fully integrated into the challenges and ecological challenges of the 21st century.

Associated with an ecological approach of circular economy integrating a not insignificant part of competitive secondary raw materials from virgin materials, the architectural design and the resistance of materials on the new Windelo catamarans are mechanically tested in the Materials Center of « Mines d’Alès » (C2MA – IMT MINES ALES) (Gard, France) in connection with the architects and designers of the project. The design of the ship, and in particular the hulls and bows, go through a search for efficient structuring and arranging of materials composing it, combined with a mechanically optimized geometrical assembly. To this end, specific test developments, such as the study of distortion of the structure and of the panels constituating the hull of the ship, are studied by digital image correlation techniques coupled with standardized strength tests.

Founder of Catana

“The cruising program for this new boat raises the question of the antagonism between the search for performance under sail and the pleasure of navigation, and the development of pleasant living spaces. The originality of the answer is provided here in the arrangement of the cockpit bringing together the helm and maneuvers to the center of the boat and in the arrangement of living space that occupies the rear of the nacelle.

Just behind the mast the outer cockpit offers two helm stations protected from the wind and spray, a beautiful view of the sails and bows, and allows to have all the maneuvers on hand while limiting the needs to circulate on the bridge. Out of navigation, the cockpit can be more widely protected from the outside and open to the rear space.

Fully opened behind this cockpit, we have not developed two living spaces duplicating one inside the other but a single large space which is ajustable. We have focused our efforts on the geometry of the material and visual limits of this space and on the opening kinematics of the bays. Once opened, they “disappear” to transform the interior into an exterior. The generosity of these openings also allows to modulate the ventilation of this space by playing on a wide range of opening on its four sides

This work on the modularity and the disappearance of limits is found at the extreme rear of the nacelle, with an articulated platform to the davits transforming it into a floor when anchored, and in the rear cabins, whose wide turning porthole eliminates the angle between side plating and back side. The cabin space is therefore generous despite the relative narrowness of the hulls.

All these choices allow us to combine a contained hold of the nacelle, pledge control of the weight estimate, to a generous living space, with a central part given to navigation and maneuvering. The slenderness of the forward spikes, the significant free height under the platform, and the attention paid to the centering of the masses, complete the marine qualities expected for an offshore navigation program.

The other originality of the project brought by this new construction site is in the approach of “eco-design” on materials and construction. Strongly limiting the use of molds, the latter brings a greater margin of freedom in the variations and evolutions of the boats thus conceived. ”

Who could know if it is the father or the son who is the most  passionate? It doesn’t matter. The important thing  is to write an innovative project within a family culture, for today and for generations to come. Hand over the guiding light, this is Olivier Kauffmann’s will. “At first I wanted to make my own boat, for me and my family; go on trip around the world living on a  efficient and pleasant catamaran. I dreamed of a new quality of space. Today, the dream has matured, and I want to share it with the great family of sailors. »

Windelo is the desire to expose us to something new, innovative, powerful, bigger than oneself. To seek innovations on materials, techniques of industrialization and uses to impulse a new economic reality. “We want to be part of this transformation related to the respect of our environment, it is for us, essential to work in this respect of men and nature. Men are at the heart of the project with the desire to recruit and form a passionate team, surrounded by experts recognized as the best in their field.

And the innovation doesn’t stop here, because the constructive process makes it possible to envisage fast evolutions from one boat to another while remaining well priced. An ambitious and respectful project ; Welcome to the Windelo adventure.

2024 Boat of the Year: HH44

  • By Dave Reed
  • December 18, 2023

HH44 testing

On a cool late-October morning in Annapolis, Maryland, Sailing World ’s Boat of the Year judges stepped on board the gleaming red HH44 built by the Hudson Yacht Group in China. With them for the test sail was HH Catamarans president Seth Hynes and commissioning skipper Chris Bailet, who had tuned the rig and bent on the boat’s Dacron delivery sails. (The race sails were delayed in shipping.) It was their first time sailing the boat too, and like the judges, they were eager to see what it could do.

As the crew slipped dock lines and motored away in silence, the boat’s twin 10-kilowatt electric engines propelled the sleek catamaran through the mooring field in silence. If not for the sound of water gurgling from the transoms and the apparent wind blowing across the foredeck, the judges could barely tell they were underway.

The mainsail was then carefully hoisted inside the lazy jacks, and the halyard held firm with an innovative Karver KJ cone (a conical rope-holding device that acts like a restricter). They bore away and unfurled the non-overlapping jib, which snapped full, and the boat immediately accelerated.

“Once we got going, it was 5, 6, 7 knots and then—boom—we’re right up to 10,” Stewart says. And with that they were laying tracks all over the Chesapeake Bay, making good pace on all points of sail, even without a reaching sail to deploy. (That too was stuck in transit.)

HH44 salon

After two hours of straight-lining, tacking, jibing, and enjoying the comforts of the interior in a 10- to 15-knot southerly and sharp Chesapeake chop, I extracted the judges from the boat and asked, “So?”

“Boat of the Year,” was veteran Boat of the Year judge Chuck Allen’s immediate response. “That thing is wicked.”

Greg Stewart and Mike Ingham confirmed with nods of approval and big grins. There was no need to debate any further: The HH44 had earned the first award of what will be more to come. This $2 million crossover catamaran is the performance sailor’s retirement race boat. [Editor’s note: The judges’ estimated price was based on an expected racing inventory and associated hardware, but according to HH Catamarans, the new 2024 pricing is as follows: The HH44-OC will start at $995K and is approximately $1.3m fully optioned with EcoDrive and sails). The HH44-SC will start at $1.45m and be approximately $1.6 million fully optioned with EcoDrive and sails.]

HH44 helm

With a stated 37 of these 44-footers on order as of late October and a waiting list of three-plus years, HH44s will someday be scattered about in cruising grounds around the world, says Hynes. But it’s only a matter of time—and it will be sooner than later—before owners gather and give the racing thing a go.

Aft lounge

The HH44 is the smallest of the builder’s new lineage of hybrid-powered performance catamarans (there is a 52-footer in the works), so it is positioned as an entry point into big-cat sailing. This model does not require a professional captain or crew because simplicity and owner-operator considerations are prevalent throughout the boat, which is designed by young naval architect James Hakes, son of Paul Hakes, one of the company founders. Chinese entrepreneur Hudson Wang is the other “H” of HH Catamarans.

“It had a great groove upwind. The self-tacking jib was really easy to deal with, and for the mainsail it was just a few feet of ease on the mainsheet, adjust the powered traveler up to center, trim on and go.”

“James brought the hybrid idea with him, and Hudson was willing to take a risk and look at doing something kind of game-changing in the industry with our parallel-hybrid approach,” Hynes says. Morrelli & Melvin was intimately involved in every performance aspect of the boat, from the appendages to the final hull profile.

“It’s a diesel engine with a shaft drive, and then independent of that is an electric motor with a belt to the shaft, so they’re really independent of each other,” Hynes explains.

HH44 Sport Cruiser rear

HH isn’t the first or only builder to use the system from Hybrid Marine, but Hake’s approach to the boat overall is inextricably linked to maximizing solar coverage, which means a clean roof and placing the helm stations down in the cockpit. To address the known challenges of cockpit steering in such catamarans, the steering wheels pivot inboard and outboard to allow for better forward visibility and communication with anyone on the foredeck dealing with sails, anchors or dock lines.

Placing the steering stations in the cockpit eliminates the tiered wedding-cake look of most big catamarans these days. More importantly, doing so allows them to lower the sail plan. “That allows for more sail area and less stress on the standing rigging,” Stewart says. “Plus, it looks so much better.”

There are 4,432 watts worth of solar panels piled onto the coach roof, which Hynes says has plenty of juice to get by off the grid, even in low-light conditions. “At full battery capacity, you can run the boat at full throttle using the two 10-kilowatt electric motors and get 7 knots of boatspeed for approximately two hours,” he says. “In light air, you can even keep your leeward electric motor running to build yourself some apparent wind. That’s what’s great about this system: You can sail quietly when no one else can sail at all.”

HH44 daggerboards

The port helm station is where a lot of the boathandling happens; there are powered halyard winches and a meticulous array of labeled jammers. Tails disappear into a deep trough forward of the pedestal. The wheels are sized just right, Stewart says. “Initially, I was steering from the weather wheel and I could see fine, and when I went to the leeward wheel, I could easily see the telltales. It had a great feel to the helm—light and responsive with no slop or tightness.”

In Allen’s sailing assessment of the HH44: “It had a great groove upwind. The self-tacking jib was really easy to deal with, and for the mainsail it was just a few feet of ease on the mainsheet, adjust the powered traveler up to center, trim on and go. There is some choreography to learn with the steering wheel, though. You have to move the wheel inboard to get better access to the sail and daggerboard controls during the tack. But once you’re done, you pop the wheel right back out to the outboard position. We didn’t have a screecher to really light it up downwind, but even with the Dacron jib and main, the boat took off. I was really impressed.”

catamarano sportivo

One wish for Stewart would be a sliver of a coach roof window for quick sail-trim checks, but he understood the priority of using every inch of solar-panel coverage.

Not having a sail-trim window wasn’t an issue for Ingham, however. “Most of the time, you’ll trim it to your best guess, take a step outboard and up the stairs right next to the wheel, and check yourself on the trim. It’s all push buttons anyway, so you’re not having to reload a winch or anything like that every time you make an adjustment.”

Even as the morning’s fresh breeze abated, the boat continued to perform beyond expectations, Stewart says. “As we got down to 5 knots of wind, the boat was still quick through the tacks. We didn’t have to back the jib at all, and it sailed at good angles upwind. I was impressed with how well it tacked, and how well it tracked with only one daggerboard down.”

catamarano sportivo

Stewart, a naval architect himself, also appreciated the boat’s modern styling and “sexy-looking profile,” especially the uncluttered interior. “It’s a nice departure from other similar-size catamarans,” he says. “I like the styling—it caught my eye the very first time I saw the rendering. The transom angle and the reverse bow give it nice aesthetics and the buoyancy you need. The curved boards worked well and are integrated nicely on with the boat. Overall, it’s a great-looking package, and it would be a lot of fun to do some races on.”

“We will definitely end up racing in the Caribbean and doing some fun events for owners,” Bailet says. “The cool thing about this boat is you can take a smaller crew of friends and race competitively, and it isn’t going to cost you $50,000 in paid crew and housing. You can race this boat with three or four people, no problem. Doublehandling is pretty easy too, but if you really wanted to go banging around the buoys, with this boat it would be easy.”

2022 Boat of the Year: Best Performance Catamaran

  • By Cruising World Editors
  • December 15, 2021

During and in the four days immediately following the US Sailboat show in Annapolis, Maryland, the  Cruising World  judges inspected and sailed on 27 boats vying for recognition. Learn more about the boats in our  2022 Boat of the Year  »

OK, confession time. When the roster of nominees for the 2022 Boat of the Year awards was released, the contest’s team and judging panel couldn’t help themselves, and quietly put three check marks, little symbols of anticipation, alongside a trio of boats: the untamed cats that would vie for the title of best performer in their class. After all, both Balance and Seawind had entered the winner’s circle in previous BOTY competitions, and it was clear they’d have a serious contender for the throne in yet another player from cat-crazy South Africa, the Kinetic KC54. How’d it go? Let’s just say, nobody was disappointed. The conditions on Chesapeake Bay were ideal for putting the three nominees through their paces, and the trio of scalded cats all acquitted themselves superbly.

For 2022, if anything, the trend for flybridge catamarans is on a major upswing. New cats for 2022 from both Lagoon and Fountaine Pajot continued down that design path, putting an emphasis on living accommodations, not performance. But not aboard the latest Seawind 1600 , a brand originally built in Australia that is now produced in Vietnam. And that suits judge Tim Murphy just fine. “This boat was very dialed in,” he said, “and one place Seawind has always been innovative is with their helms. This one was really great; it was -outboard and aft with great visibility, sort of half-protected where you could step in and out. There was also good access to the boom and mainsail, which you don’t always see on cats. The deck layout was excellent, particularly the forward trampolines. Some cats have lacings with large openings where you can twist an ankle, but these were nice and tight.”

Seawind 1600

“Compared to other Seawinds that I’ve seen, I was just blown away with it in terms of what it could do and how it performed,” said Ed Sherman.  “It’s a fairly conservative boat in terms of technology compared to some of the other boats in the same category, which depending on a potential buyer’s state of mind, could be either a good thing or a bad one. I loved the centralized winch aft which is where all the sail-handling takes place. It’s pretty brilliant for a short-handed crew, and it’s all in a very safe and easy-to-access location that a cruising couple can deal with without scaring the heck out of themselves.”

The Kinetic KC54 is a fresh entry in the cat universe, and we’ll let Tim Murphy get right to the point: “This is a fairly new company that was started within the past couple of years. My breath was absolutely taken away by this boat; it was spectacular. I think it was the best-built boat in the entire fleet. It’s an all-carbon boat, with a foam core, epoxy resin, all infused–fantastic. The whole boat felt integrated. You didn’t feel like there was a conflict between the forces in terms of accommodation versus performance.” With a price tag approaching $3 million, it perhaps should not be astonishing. That was a major factor in evaluating the boat, and while it did not win its class, the experts panel did present it with a Judges’ Special Recognition prize to honor the boat’s overall excellence.

Kinetic KC 54

“It was my personal favorite in this year’s contest,” said Sherman. The materials that were used are absolutely the highest quality available in our industry at this point, and it’s a very high-tech boat in terms of systems.” Gerry Douglas was also duly impressed: “This was the Tesla of sailboats. I think that that was their model. In terms of design and execution and technology, it hit all three of those marks. This boat is built without compromise, and what it cost was not an issue, they just wanted to do the best they could in every aspect of the boat. The construction was impeccable, the fit and finish was amazing. There are some very clever design things in the boat, but it all really worked seamlessly.”

With that level of competition, the Balance 482 had a tall order to overcome to win its class. And it did. “The sailing performance was excellent,” said Douglas. “The boat felt really good. The steering was terrific. The structure of the boat throughout was exemplary. Storage is really good. Visibility was good. Ventilation was great. There was even a rain collection system on the cabin top, which is the only one of the boats we looked at had that. It was very well concealed because the gutters formed a handhold going forward. The solar panel installation was also well done. The panels were encapsulated into a fiberglass tray that elevated the deck so the panels wouldn’t overheat. Very clever.”

Balance 482

The driving force behind Balance cats is Phil Berman, a world champ at racing beach cats who brought that passion to developing and marketing fully found cruisers. Judge Murphy knows him well: “Phil comes from a very strong view of wanting to see boats that have solid sailing performance. He’s also a strong proponent of daggerboard boats, which tends to be quick shorthand for the dividing line between cats that are more about payload versus cats that are about performance, but not so much where you’re going to fly a hull or break a rudder. There’s a balance within a boat that really performs that you can still live aboard.” A winning balance, it turns out, with the Balance 482 securing its position as the Best Performance Cruiser for 2022.

sport-catamaran

A sport catamaran is a light, fast twin-hulled sailboat without a cabin, designed for one to three persons.

These boats are for leisure or competition sailing. They also can be used for coastal racing, since beaching is easy and the trampoline is an ideal place to pitch a tent. Water sports centers sometimes have a fleet of rental cats.

The two identical hulls are joined by arms. The hulls can be of polyester, polypropylene, carbon or even inflatable plastic. The mast, stepped on the forward arm, sometimes carries only a mainsail, though jib and spinnaker, generally asymmetrical, are optional additions. Twin rudders are linked by a steering rack. The catamaran has one or more trapezes for hiking out.

Choice will depend on crew capacity and intended use including leisure, regatta and coastal racing. The many models range from 12-foot single-handers to 22-footers for two or three people. The larger the catamaran, the more powerful. Inflatable cats are easy to transport, but cannot match the performance of the others. All can be trailered. Common standard models offer the possibility of participating in class regattas.

How to choose a sport catamaran?

What are the different uses for a sport catamaran, what about the number of practitioners, why choose a sport catamaran equipped with a trapeze, which sails should i choose for my sport catamaran, why choose a foiling sport catamaran, what equipment is essential for a sport catamaran.

Choosing the Right Sport Catamaran

A sport catamaran is a type of 2-hull sailboat that’s light and fast. It does not have a cabin and usually carries one to three people, for short periods. It is used for sport sailing, recreation or regattas and can also be used for sail camping or coastal racing. The more sporty versions are equipped with a trapeze to improve performance. Like the majority of sailboats today, you can find sport catamarans equipped with foils.

View sport catamarans

To choose the best sport catamaran for your needs, there are a number of key criteria to consider. Whether you’re getting into the sport or are already experienced, you will need to look into the points we mention in this guide. Your choice of sport catamaran will depend not only on your intended use and the number of practitioners, but also on the configuration with or without a trapeze, the type of sails and the type of appendages.

The choice will mainly relate to:

  • The intended use
  • The number of practitioners
  • Configuration with or without trapeze
  • The type of sails
  • The type of appendages

Choosing a sport catamaran greatly depends on the intended use. There are three main options: recreation, regatta and sail-camping.

Recreation : Intended for a wide audience, children and beginner adults can enjoy this practice. Sport catamarans suited for recreation are fairly easy to use with basic sail settings and often no trapeze. They are often found for rent on beaches or lakes.

Regatta : Intended for experienced practitioners. These boats are used to race on courses marked by buoys or natural obstacles with the aim of going as fast as possible. They feature advanced adjustment systems allowing the sails to be adjusted as efficiently as possible and generally include a trapeze to increase the crew’s return torque. Finally, they are increasingly equipped with foils to further improve performance.

Sail-camping : This practice consists of sailing over several days along the coast and stopping at night on beaches. The sport catamaran is ideal for this because one can easily run aground and take advantage of the trampoline stretched between the hulls to set up a camping tent.

You will have the choice between single-handed sport catamarans and those which can embark several people (most of the time: 2 people).

On the solo models, as there is only one person they must act as the helsman and take care of trimming the sails. This is why these boats are usually only equipped with a mainsail. To be able to navigate correctly, the user will need to have a good level of experience.

Most multi-crew sport catamarans are designed to carry two adults on board and are referred to as double-handed catamarans . The sail plan is more advanced with a mainsail, jib and sometimes a spinnaker which means there are more adjustment possibilities. Recreational sport catamarans can sometimes carry three adults or two adults and two children.

Eagle Catamarans single-handed sport catamaran

Row&Sail GmbH double-handed sport catamaran

Intermediate and experienced practitioners can use sport catamarans equipped with a trapeze. These are thin cables that connect the crew to the mast and allow them to hike out while standing with their feet on the hull and their body off the boat.

The use of trapezes requires specific training, but once acquired, it can significantly improve performance. The sensations of the practitioners will also be increased tenfold by the position above the water.

All regatta sport catamarans are fitted with one or two trapezes . When there is only one, it is normally for the trimmer while the helmsman remains seated on the hull or trampoline.

Nacra Sailing single-trapeze sport catamaran

Hobie Cat Europe double-trapeze sport catamaran

Nacra Sailing asymmetric spinnaker sport catamaran

As we have seen, the number of sailors has a huge influence on the sails that can be used, a solo sailor having difficulty handling a boat equipped with more than one sail. Many single-handed sport catamarans used for racing are only fitted with a mainsail that has a large surface area, which helps to maintain a good level of power and performance.

In doubles, the boat will generally be equipped in addition to the mainsail with a jib and sometimes also a spinnaker, most often an asymmetrical one . In this configuration, the boat will be very powerful in all wind conditions and will offer the best performance.

Eagle Catamarans foiling sport catamaran

Today,  foils are being used for more and more sailing practices. Foiling sport catamarans represent the latest technical development in terms of performance. Foils can be of different shapes (C, L, S, T, etc.) and they are always accompanied by a rudder with foil which makes it possible to control the “flight.”

The use of foils significantly increases the technical level required and although there are some models intended for a wide audience, most of these boats can only be used by experienced sailors. This sophisticated equipment is also expensive to develop and produce, which is why foiling sport catamarans are more expensive than classic versions (whether they have a daggerboard or not).

The use of sport catamarans requires a lot of equipment for the boat itself as well as for the user. Here is a non-exhaustive list:

  • A trailer is needed to transport the boat and launch it.
  • Sails are essential! Mainsail, jib, spinnaker.
  • The fittings must be suitable for the sails: blocks , shackles, jammers, cleats and lines. On larger models, there are also winches.
  • A protective cover may be essential if the boat is stored outdoors.
  • For practitioners, wetsuits are often necessary to avoiding getting cold.
  • Given the high speeds possible, practitioners are increasingly wearing helmets as well as protective gear integrated into their wetsuits.
  • Neoprene gloves and booties are also recommended for more intensive use.

2023 Boat Buyers Guide: Catamarans

  • By Karl Anderson
  • December 27, 2022

Catamaran spinning circles

The popularity of the multihull (aka catamaran or cat) fishing boats has never been greater, as more and more boatbuilders enter this growing segment of the market. The inherent stability of the catamaran design rolls less with the seas, making fishing offshore less tiresome and more comfortable. Available from 20 to 48 feet, catamarans typically offer a large fishing platform with generous storage and fishing amenities. They are available in a wide variety of deck layouts, including center-consoles, dual-consoles, and even pilothouse and express variants.

Catamaran foredeck

Big Picture

The large deck area of a catamaran enables many large underdeck storage lockers and insulated fish boxes in the sponsons. This gives anglers ample room for gear and the day’s catch. The catamaran’s stability, fishability, and smooth ride in rough seas make it attractive to anglers as well as day-cruisers. A center-console version adds 360 degrees of angler access to the rail. With the dual-console design, generous seating behind a beam-to-beam windshield makes for a great family fishing-friendly setup.

Live bait is one of the most popular types of fishing in virtually every coastal zone. To do it successfully requires optimal water capacity and proper flow. The minimum size of the outflow water plumbing should be twice the size of the inflow. The plumbing should have a drain at the bottom to shed scales at the end of the day, as well as a drain at the top of the well to adjust capacity and allow overflow. Above-deck transom-mounted wells should fully flood to the lids when running to keep baits from getting beat up.

Tip: A sump box with multiple pumps in case a pump fails is the best setup for first-rate livewells. Conveniently located inflow and outflow valves make it easy to optimize the flow without tiring your bait from swimming too much in the well.

Catamaran helm

Rod Storage

Having enough rod holders is essential to be successful for opportunity fishing. Look for vertical rod storage along the console and across the back of the T-top. Many models also have rod holders along the outboard transom wall. Having plenty of gunwale rod holders for drift- and kite-fishing is helpful.

Tip: Placing adjustable swivel rod holders by Gemlux makes deep-dropping, lure-fishing and drifting even easier because they allow your rods to face the direction the baits are fishing, yet they can be swiveled back to keep rods from sticking out of the boat while running and docking.

Manufacturers often offer multiple choices for horsepower, but whatever the choice, the engines must come in pairs. For example, you might order twin outboards (one for each sponson) or four outboards (two for each sponson), but single- or triple-outboard configurations are not common on a cat. Optimal selection should be made based on user load, weight of the boat, ride comfort , performance desires, and best case for resale. It’s a rare day when you can run wide open, but having more horsepower gives better torque at slower speeds and thus better control. Running larger engines slower gives better fuel efficiency too.

Tip: When possible, choose the highest horsepower offered because it typically leads to a better resale value with a shorter sales cycle.

Power steering from engine manufacturer Optimus or SeaStar is essential with the higher horsepower required for larger boats, and it makes installing and operating the upper station in a tower far more practical and comfortable.

With the power demands of electronics, livewell pumps, stereo amps and more, it is wise to have at least two house batteries, and for larger boats, a third or fourth with a multibank charger for dockside. Each engine should have its own dedicated battery as well.

Typically choosing the largest screen or multiple screens that will fit on the console is best-case scenario for ease of use, ergonomics, and visibility. VHF radios, stereo controller, and equipment switches for lighting, pumps, and accessories should all be integrated with greatest visibility and ease of operator reach.

A Tale of Two Hulls

A catamaran rides on pair of hulls, or sponsons, each thinner and sharper than  that of a similarly sized monohull boat. The narrow sponsons of the cat tend to slice easily through water to deliver a smooth ride, even in rough seas. At the same time, with the sponsons positioned out to the sides of the boat, cats tend to roll less, thus providing great stability to enhance crew comfort, security and safety. However, cats tend to corner more flatly than a monohull, and some hulls (but not all) tend to lean outward versus inward during a turn.

Catamaran running

Experts Say

Newer designs such as Invincible’s Morelli and Melvin-designed semi-asymmetrical sponsons eliminate some of the negatives of the cat design, such as “sneezing,” where water sprays out the front of the boat when hitting a wave. They’ve also controlled the uncomfortable “outboard lean” sensation common in older designs when in a turn. Once transitioned to a catamaran, many become true believers and preach the benefits of the design.

Editor Says: Saltwater fishing cats not only offer superb stability and smooth ride, but some also display exceptional speed and range. I recall one trip out of Key West, Florida, aboard an Invincible 40 Cat with four 350 hp outboards to the Dry Tortugas. It was a 60-mile run, and we made it there in 70 minutes. We caught more fish than our arms could bear, and then dashed back to Key West, arriving in time for cocktail hour on the same day. -Jim Hendricks, Staff Editor, Boating and Fishing Group

53 YachtCat Sportfish With Yacht Broker Jack Stringfellow [Highlights]

ULTIMATE LURE , a custom 53′ YachtCat Sportfish, is unlike any other modern catamaran in the world.

Offering a complete interior and exterior yacht layout comparable to a 60′, with three staterooms, three ensuite heads, a spacious saloon, galley up with main saloon seating for eight, all with the comfort of the 17′ beam added for stability in action or at the dock, the 53′ “YachtCat” is truly distinctive. This Custom Sportfish belongs in a class of its own with design features that separate this fishing machine from all other traditional monohull sportfish. Her owner-specified details offer the best use of interior space and exterior layout for world-class fishing performance.

Custom Sportfish 2016 | 53′

53' Yachtcat Sportfish 2016 ULTIMATE LURE

• Length Overall: 53′ • Hull Beam: 17′ • Engine Power: 2 x 900HP • Engine Make: Volvo 1050 IPS • Cruising Speed: 28 kn • Maximum Speed: 35 kn • Range: 365 nm • Cabins: 3

ULTIMATE LURE is purpose-built. Her catamaran hull (rather than the typical monohull for sportfish) has more stability and better righting moment from an engineering perspective, which allows for more favorable seakeeping in a beam sea condition or waves on the side of the hull. The catamaran hull defines stability without the need for added gyro stabilizer or other costly, heavy systems.

53' Yachtcat Sportfish 2016 ULTIMATE LURE

What makes this Sportfish stand out at first glance is her high freeboard catamaran hull, the walkthrough upper helm forward to the bow for single-handed docking, and tuna tower with full helm controls, electronics, and joystick. With accommodations like a 60-footer, she has an extra large interior living area with a high-volume full-beam master, 6’10” headroom, and full-size master shower/tub.

53' Yachtcat Sportfish 2016 ULTIMATE LURE Interior

The larger cockpit offers the deck space of a 60-footer. Additional exterior details to note are the comfortable lazarette seating for 10 people at the upper helm level, with the enclosures offering a full 360-degree view, and the shade-covered dry stable lounge with a chilled beverage box cooler storage. There is a built-in, extra large livewell powered by a high-volume, 230V pool pump, which is plumbed and wired for dual purpose, as a back supply line for the boat’s air-conditioning systems and professional tackle station.

Performance

Achieved by the unique catamaran tunnel hull design and Volvo IPS engine system, this Custom Sportfish operates at 30% more fuel efficiency, reaching a cruising speed of 27 knots with 64 GPH fuel burn more like a 45-footer. Her maximum speed is 35 knots.

The Volvo IPS “fly by wire” technology allows for complete electronic control of the engine to propulsion to steering system versus a mechanical/hydraulic system with more parts, pumps, and maintenance. It is controlled by a joystick, providing ease of operations for most Owner Operators with less crew. Generally, this hull is more nimble for the operator while fishing, cruising, docking, or relaxing at the mooring.

Having fished many tournaments with scoreboard results and miles of sea time, the one key factor to this build is the Volvo Penta IPS Drive System.  This system has technology features that are unmatched in the industry. The reason for this amazing maneuverability is that the propulsion units are individually steerable turning and pointing the entire thrust in the desired direction. This enhances maneuverability and by far greater response to driver commands.

Twin counter-rotating propellers on each hydro dynamically optimized pod unit mean superior thrust and no side forces, resulting in excellent course holding capability. Electronic controls give a distinct and precise feeling—and shifting is immediate. The progressive electronic steering allows the wheel to spin easier at low speed, further reducing driver effort.

Catamarani sportivi usate

  • mantenere la barca nelle sue linee per avere una navigazione fluida;
  • mantenere l'angolo del timone il più basso possibile , facendo attenzione che il timone non rallenti troppo il catamarano;

  • Hobie-Cat: primo costruttore ad aver creato un catamarano sportivo con scafi asimmetrici;
  • Sirena Voile: costruttore francese specializzato in catamarani sportivi usati;
  • o ancora Nacra: costruttore californiano che produce principalmente catamarani da regata.

XCAT MULTI-SPORT CATAMARANS

Whether sailing, rowing, stand-up paddling or motoring, the xcat is the perfect multi-sport platform. this boat is simply enjoyed thanks, in part, to its ease of assembly and transport. simply unload it from your roof rack or truck bed and assemble it in only a few minutes with no tools. the xcat is the perfect fit for anyone looking for a portable sail or coastal rowboat and aren’t interested in fussing with inflatables or trailers..

A winner of SAIL Magazine’s 2017 award for Best Day Sailer, the XCAT combines versatility, portability and performance in a way that no other boat on the market can. From capturing high winds with XCAT Sail, or leveraging the forward-facing RowVista® or rear-facing RowMotion® rowing mechanisms with the XCAT Row, the XCAT opens up a whole new world of adventures.

THE XCAT’S DESIGN IS COMPLETELY MODULAR

To create a boat as versatile, portable and unique as the XCAT, the cracked team of engineers at Row&Sail developed a boat that can be accessorized with a modular platform. But what does that mean for you? The XCAT starts with the XCAT Basic, you can then configure the boat with accessories to set it up as a 1-2 person SUP, a sailboat, a rowboat (with traditional or forward facing styles) and a motor boat (up to 3 hp outboard). But it doesn’t stop there, the XCAT has a trick of it’s own. It can be configured with all of these functions at the same time! You can even switch between functions while out on the water. Switching from rowing to sailing (or vise versa) takes less than 60 seconds!! No production boat on the market offers this many functions, and the XCAT delivers by doing each function very well.

Scroll down to explore the unique modular configurations of XCAT.

01 THE XCAT BASIC

Whether you are planning to use the XCAT as a rowboat, a sailboat, or better yet, both, it all starts with a great platform—the XCAT Basic. Made from only 5 parts, the XCAT Basic is easy to transport on the top of your car or SUV and assembles in about 2 minutes or less. The frame is durable and lightweight, made from anodized aluminum for durability and corrosion resistance against seawater. The hulls, which are the single heaviest component of the boat at 38 lbs each, have skins made from a sheet of recyclable HDPE. The sheet is thermoformed into shape then filled with floatation foam—this combines for a portable and unsinkable boat.

While we don’t offer the XCAT Basic as a standard offering, we are happy to special order one for you. Click to link below to inquire about the XCAT Basic.

02 THE XCAT SAIL CONFIGURATION

So you like to go fast—like really fast—like 15 knots fast? Behold the XCAT Sail configuration. In this sailing configuration, the XCAT Basic gets a short mast and a generous sail area that provides plenty of speed with just a little bit of wind. The mainsail generates high-power thanks to its proprietary loop system. Not only is the XCAT Sail fast, but it’s also the most stable boat we sell, capable of handling big water and bad weather, with a built-in, heave-to feature that will work even in the strongest of winds.

With a tool-free assembly time of just 12 minutes or less (Red Beard Record is 7:30), you’ll be on the water in no time. To explore the XCAT Sail configuration, click the link below.

03 THE XCAT ROW CONFIGURATION

Here’s where the flexibility, versatility and unique functionality of the XCAT’s modular design system really shines. The XCAT Row is a smooth and stable rowing platform, thanks to being built atop the lightweight XCAT Basic. At Red Beard Sailing, we’ve pre-configured the XCAT Row into three different packages: the XCAT SUP, the XCAT RowMotion (available with or without oars) and the XCAT RowVista, our proprietary forward-facing oar system, to accommodate your rowing/paddling style.

The XCat SUP lets you stand up and paddle for fitness or fun. The catamaran stability, coupled with the optional tiller-fix accessory helps keep you on track whether you paddle alone or with a friend.

ENGINEERED FROM THE GROUND UP

The xcat story.

Jochum Bierma, founder and developer of XCAT, was motivated to put sailors and individual customers first. The end goal: to have as much fun as possible while being equipped to discover something new every day.

To drive this innovative product, the XCAT team focused on selecting quality materials and then put those materials through rigorous testing to ensure that even the most skilled and daring sailors would be satisfied with the end product.

The result is an award-winning ultra-portable, ultra-lightweight boat designed for sailing, rowing and outboards.

Industrial Series Production

XCAT production control is held to the highest standards. The unsinkable hulls are filled with EPP foam and are made using production machinery that was designed specifically for XCAT. The unique hull manufacturing process in expanded polypropylene is proprietary to XCAT.

The Everglades Challenge

Red Beard himself sailed the XCAT in the 2018 Everglades Challenge. In his journey he experienced 20-30 knot winds and 6-8 foot waves. He also camped aboard and poled out the genoa with a SUP paddle to row and sail down the ICW and Lemon Bay. The XCAT performed beautifully, beating every Hobie Adventure Island and Tandem Island to CP1. Click here to read the whole story.

Enthusiasm and Innovation

We’re not overstating when we say the XCAT development is a feat of engineering. The XCAT team was dedicated to providing an experience that exceeded expectations in all aspects of boat ownership.

Electronics

Boat Specification

Advantages A lot bigger than the other 'standard' inflatable that I have, and also faster. Seems very well built. more Disadvantages A standard-shaft OB motor will not work with this raft. It will cavitate, no matter how far you trim down. I'm using a 1980 Johnson 9.9. So I will either have to find a long-shaft OB motor, or may possibly notch the transom a few inches (Discussing with the manufacturer). more Comment A lot bigger than the other 'standard' inflatable that I have, and also faster. Administrator reply Thank you for your feedback and the great pictures. The new 2023 Saturn Triton catamarans are indeed larger and of greater quality than our prior models, and we appreciate you noticing that. While the transom is custom designed for a short shaft motor, it is possible that certain motors/brands may not perform as well as others. We look forward to continuing to partner with you to help resolve the motor performance.
Comment Steve..just sent you some pics today before the big snow fall tonight...made lifting bridles from new tow straps so they lift from under the tubes worked out great! Cheers Tim Wrangell AK (These photos are now shown on product page) more
Comment I bought this for carrying lumber to remote building sites in Alaska, it's light enough to use the main Halyard to lift it out of the water and place on top of my boat. I will be doing a whole video on YouTube this spring. Steve Susten has delivered on time..as quoted every time....Great Inflatables! more

Already at light winds fantastic sailing pleasure

Pdf language versions, sensational single-handed racer, unbelievable small in the pack bags, infinitely large in the sailing pleasure.

Unbelievably small in the pack-bag yet with so much sailing pleasure to offer: The handy sailing boat for solo sailors is a fast and agile fun catamaran that is ready to use in no time: From your camper van onto the water in just 20 to 30 minutes! The NEO is very light and makes it all the easier: The inflatable catamaran can be easily stowed away; it is spectacular – and light – to sail on one hull and easy to set back upright if it capsizes. Ideal for easy sailing, beginners, young people and up to two people on inland waters: Perfect for all those who appreciate lightness.

catamarano sportivo

Small but excellent

The two practical pack-bags for the NEO measure only 185 cm so that they can be easily stowed away in your camper van or car.

catamarano sportivo

Innovative hull

More buoyancy, extra loads, increased safety – and smooth sailing with less spray:

The convex hull bottom reduces resistance at the bow and stern, and the modern Wavepiercer bow cuts through the waves. You will be the fastest sailor on the water! It is has been developed and optimised through tank testing and the boat-skin is hand made from tough Grabner car tyre rubber.

catamarano sportivo

Robust profile frame

Frame with internal profile: The frame doesn’t twist, the hulls don’t bounce off: The profile frame, which is made from saltwater-resistant anodised aluminium, is firmly connected to the hull at the top and at the sides with four sleeve inserts. These angular connectors provide torsional stability, while the trampoline mesh is integrated seamlessly and directly into the profile frame.

catamarano sportivo

Long centreboard, great effect

The deeper the centreboard extends into the water, the better it reduces lateral drift – the centreboard of the HAPPY CAT reaches particularly deep and it can also be infinitely inclined to optimally trim the pressure point to the speed of each course.

The extremely robust and hydrodynamically optimised aluminium centreboard retracts automatically when it touches the ground and can be pulled in completely during landing.

catamarano sportivo

Extremely easy steering

Servo-like steering: The high-speed rudder, which is made from strong aluminium and shifted towards the rear, ensures easy operation and smooth sailing while improving the steering control just like a hydrodynamically optimised blade that extends deep into the water. It releases automatically when it touches the ground.

catamarano sportivo

Easy assembly and dismantling

The practical mast foot joint makes it easy to right and lower the mast, which can be righted by just one person.

catamarano sportivo

Professional profile rig

Angular connectors keep the mast stable. The sail is directly retracted directly and flush into the mast profile to become one unit with the mast which rotates together with it – this results in a professional profile.

Double shrouds and the additional forestay increase safety and ensure that the mast bends in a controlled manner to optimise the sail profile. The mast can be adjusted/left erected independently from the sails.

catamarano sportivo

Wind in the sails

Sailing at high speed: The upper section of the Square Head mainsail is wider, which allows you to sail at high speed even in light wind conditions; the modern shape of the fully battened 6 m² mainsail, which is made from thick Dacron canvas, provides you an ideal profile for any wind condition, and thanks to the sail surface, which has been extended further downwards, the formation of air vortices is reduced to a minimum. Large, reinforced windows provide the skipper with unobstructed all-round visibility.

Foresail advantage: The 3 m² jib reaches up to the mast to allow you to sail with more height using the tow points which are fixed at an ideal position close to the mast; the comfortable continuous jib furler makes handling easy – with no skewer at all.

catamarano sportivo

Traveller and trim

Before the wind, wind abeam or close to the wind: Depending on the course, the tow point of the mainsheet is moved towards luff or lee using the traveller and the “twist” of the mainsail is reduced.

Flat or bulging sail: To perfectly adjust the mainsheet profile to the wind conditions, the mainsheet is hooked into the clew plate further towards the front or to the rear.
