Access to the flybridge is simple with dual staircases both Port and Starboard. On the flybridge, the helm station affords both protection and visibility. For greater comfort, a choice of sun protection is available: a folding hood or a rigid bimini.

Just two steps from the saloon, access to the ocean is wide, convenient and safe with the simple tender launching system. You can either opt for a conventional davit hoist or a Tenderlift platform, which offers a new living space at the stern of the boat while facilitating access to the water.

Construction

» in Voiles et Voiliers Moteurs

Catamarans d'occasion

50' 2022 nova luxe elite 50 hybrid.

hybrid power catamaran for sale

Nova Luxe, the leader in power catamaran electric re-fits, brings you ELITE 50 (IE) model as an electric hybrid new build. IE or Inboard Electric is founded on an industry proven power design. This is our Blue Water hybrid model which places a traditional Diesel Motor in the port hull and an electric motor in the starboard hull. No generator is necessary for this configuration and its top speed is comparable to a full diesel version. Unlike a full diesel, this yacht can cruise silently as electric all day. We optimize the props for different speed ranges making this the most efficient and highest performing electric hybrid of its class.

The two propulsion systems can function independently. A redundancy level necessary for blue water. The alternator of our diesel engine is upgraded by Integrel Solutions to allow for 15kW of power (1kw is normal alternator output) to flow through and charge the batteries whenever it is running. At rest, the solar array is large enough to cover the entire house load and send excess power to the high voltage batteries for propulsion.

The 10kW solar array provides ample power to run the house load for a 24 hour period. Freedom from a generator while at anchor. In practical use, you could spend several days at an island, then use the power you stored to travel an additional 10-40 miles to the next island. Leave the diesel in the tank and travel on green energy.

With the Torqeedo electric propulsions system the yacht has a two year warranty on all electric systems as well as, battery capacity warrantied for 8 years.

The world today is different and will continue to change. To see natural beauty you need to travel off the beaten path. When you find the oasis you have been searching for, cruise in silently, observe the wildlife and leave without a footprint of diesel, oil, or CO2.

The ocean and its? reefs all around the world are under stress. This underwater world is a true wonder. Now is the time to see it and we have the ability to do so without polluting. With your help we can transition to a cleaner planet.

Hybrid Design Overview

There are two primary designs of hybrid systems available for yachts – Serial or Parallel .  After much research, we chose to use a  Parallel Hybrid model.   There are many reasons for this decision, which are explained in detail below.

We developed a solution that does not deviate from our history of never compromising crew safety and comfort for the latest market trends and newest technologies.  Our boats are designed to be dependable, redundant, and safe in extreme weather conditions and remote locations. In addition, keeping customer needs in focus as we modify our offerings is one of the reasons we are ‘The Worlds’ Best Liveaboard.’

We feel it is essential for our customers to understand how we arrived at our Hybrid offering. Here is our table of critical design considerations.

Go Back Top

There are two primary types of hybrid systems for yachts –  Serial & Parallel .  Parallel systems exist in either  External  or  Flywheel  versions.

This is an example of a Series Hybrid  system from OceanVolt.  These systems rely on a DC generator to charge the batteries and power the two electric motors which in turn power the Yanmar sail drives.

There are a number of reasons why this system was not selected by Antares:

  • We will never put a sail drive on our boats
  • Serial hybrid systems are less efficient than parallel systems
  • OceanVolt batteries are not LiFePO4 chemistry (more on this here)

A  Flywheel Parallel system uses a traditional diesel engine, in a series with an electric motor and transmission to power either a salldrive or shaft.  This is an example of a Volvo design currently in development with Fontaine Pajot.

We did not select this type of  Parallel system for the following reasons:

  • The space required is too ‘long’ in length to easily fit in the Antares GT
  • If the clutch fails, the engine and motor are disabled
  • This design is less efficient than the external parallel design

An  External Parallel system uses a traditional diesel engine. The motor/generator is kept out of the conventional drive chain and connects to the driveshaft after the gearbox. If stand-alone generation is needed a clutch is required to disconnect the propeller shaft.  If the clutch fails, it can be manually engaged, providing additional redundancy.

We are pleased to be partnering with Hybrid Marine for the Antares Hybrid.  Graeme (CEO) and his team have been outstanding in their support of our project.  We share similar values, and the leadership and expertise Hybrid Marine brings to Antares are over fourteen years in this marine hybrid business.  The technology is proven, easily serviced, and redundant.

  • The best overall solution that meets our criteria
  • 14 years of parallel hybrid experience in the marine industry
  • Yanmar UK in partnership with Hybrid Marine (same engine we use on new GT)
  • Member of ISHY (Implementation of Ship HYbridisation) since 2019

Another advantage of a hybrid, is the ability for the electric motor to serve a dual purpose and generate power.  As the boat is sailing, you can generate power to top up the Lithium batteries and power your onboard appliances.

For comparison, the power curves for the Hybrid Marine system we are using is very similar to the Watt & Sea 600 hydro generators.  The power curves are below.

Power Consumption Scenarios

We must answer the ultimate question, ‘ So What? ‘  How does the NEW Antares Hybrid affect daily life aboard the boat?  What do the power consumption scenarios look like, and why does this matter?

The following consumption scenarios are based on real-world numbers provided by Antares owners.  The solar generation numbers are based on a 30-day test in tropical conditions with Panasonic HIT panels aboard s/v Field Trip.  We have done our best to provide realistic numbers.  However, every boat owner is different, so the numbers will vary from owner to owner.

All appliances and cooking are assumed to be electric, with no LPG onboard.

The conservative model provides plenty of excess power regardless of the cruising season.  1,800 watts of solar power is sufficient to live comfortably, while completely independent of fossil fuels.

The 40 kWh of Victron Lithium allows for luxurious living.  This scenario has either the port or starboard aft cabin running the AC for four hours every day AND making hot water for showers and washing dishes.  This gives the owner anywhere from 1.5 – 3 weeks of luxury, without ever needing to start an engine to recharge the batteries.

Using a combination of the two models, it is possible to still run the AC periodically, heat the water, and still have a neutral carbon footprint.

Passagemaking consists of about 10% of the total time living aboard an Antares.  This 10% is when you may need to use the electric motors to leave an anchorage or marina.  When underway, averaging seven knots, the daily surplus of power (10kW – 11kW) is plenty of power to not only recharge the 40kWh of Victron Lithium but run A/C and any other devices on board.

This is a complex topic.  To put it simply, Antares will only use LiFePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate) batteries in our boats.  The reason is simple.  LiFePO4 is the most stable chemistry and far less prone to issues like fire.  There is a reason why Victron and Mastervolt are ONLY using this chemistry for their marine batteries.

Other battery chemistries used by electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers are more efficient and have higher energy densities.  At present, we don’t believe this technology is ready for the marine environment.  A fire in a car on land is tragic and potentially life-threatening.  A fire aboard a boat 1,000NM from land or in a remote atoll is an entirely different matter.

Sometimes, several pictures and some recent data are all that is needed to put this topic to rest.

Motor: A reliable high-performance electric hybrid drive system

Electric motor with a good cruising range.

  • At 6 knots, the Windelo 50 has a range of nearly 3 hours and 45 minutes and roughly 22.7nm per day with an 1120Ah battery bank.
  • At 7 knots, the Windelo 50 has a range of nearly 2 hours and 17 minutes and roughly 15.47nm per day with an 1120Ah battery bank.

Graphique résistance à l'avancement du Windelo 50

When the energy consumed is not compensated by renewable energies , the 18kW backup 500L diesel generator(s) start(s) up to supply the electric motors and recharge the batteries . The generator is in the aft engine bays and communicates with the Boat Management System . It starts up automatically when the batteries are low and/or when the power required is greater than the power the batteries can supply. So, the full cruising range of our catamarans on the motor is 1100 nautical miles . The generator can also be started manually by the skipper in 2 different modes:

  • Cruising range mode : for example, the skipper wishes to start his generator to increase his cruising range when there is no wind.
  • Recharge mode : the skipper starts his generator, which automatically switches off when the batteries are fully charged.

As part of the creation of new types of catamaran made in Occitanie, an audacious choice of ecological innovation has been selected in partnership with the Materials Center of « Mines d’Alès » (C2MA – IMT MINES ALES) (Gard, France). It’s a question of combining ecological performance in terms of minimizing the environmental footprint and structural resistance, and this, in a global approach of circular economy on all parts of the boat. To do this, and in connection with the IMT MINES ALES, Windelo has relied on the use of secondary raw materials, competitive  virgin petroleum-based materials, that fully comply with the specifications in terms of mechanical performance. This is a real first step to the development of a 2.0 fleet ships fully integrated into the challenges and ecological challenges of the 21st century.

Associated with an ecological approach of circular economy integrating a not insignificant part of competitive secondary raw materials from virgin materials, the architectural design and the resistance of materials on the new Windelo catamarans are mechanically tested in the Materials Center of « Mines d’Alès » (C2MA – IMT MINES ALES) (Gard, France) in connection with the architects and designers of the project. The design of the ship, and in particular the hulls and bows, go through a search for efficient structuring and arranging of materials composing it, combined with a mechanically optimized geometrical assembly. To this end, specific test developments, such as the study of distortion of the structure and of the panels constituating the hull of the ship, are studied by digital image correlation techniques coupled with standardized strength tests.

Founder of Catana

“The cruising program for this new boat raises the question of the antagonism between the search for performance under sail and the pleasure of navigation, and the development of pleasant living spaces. The originality of the answer is provided here in the arrangement of the cockpit bringing together the helm and maneuvers to the center of the boat and in the arrangement of living space that occupies the rear of the nacelle.

Just behind the mast the outer cockpit offers two helm stations protected from the wind and spray, a beautiful view of the sails and bows, and allows to have all the maneuvers on hand while limiting the needs to circulate on the bridge. Out of navigation, the cockpit can be more widely protected from the outside and open to the rear space.

Fully opened behind this cockpit, we have not developed two living spaces duplicating one inside the other but a single large space which is ajustable. We have focused our efforts on the geometry of the material and visual limits of this space and on the opening kinematics of the bays. Once opened, they “disappear” to transform the interior into an exterior. The generosity of these openings also allows to modulate the ventilation of this space by playing on a wide range of opening on its four sides

This work on the modularity and the disappearance of limits is found at the extreme rear of the nacelle, with an articulated platform to the davits transforming it into a floor when anchored, and in the rear cabins, whose wide turning porthole eliminates the angle between side plating and back side. The cabin space is therefore generous despite the relative narrowness of the hulls.

All these choices allow us to combine a contained hold of the nacelle, pledge control of the weight estimate, to a generous living space, with a central part given to navigation and maneuvering. The slenderness of the forward spikes, the significant free height under the platform, and the attention paid to the centering of the masses, complete the marine qualities expected for an offshore navigation program.

The other originality of the project brought by this new construction site is in the approach of “eco-design” on materials and construction. Strongly limiting the use of molds, the latter brings a greater margin of freedom in the variations and evolutions of the boats thus conceived. ”

Christophe Barreau et Frédéric Neuman

Architects and Naval Engineers

Who could know if it is the father or the son who is the most  passionate? It doesn’t matter. The important thing  is to write an innovative project within a family culture, for today and for generations to come. Hand over the guiding light, this is Olivier Kauffmann’s will. “At first I wanted to make my own boat, for me and my family; go on trip around the world living on a  efficient and pleasant catamaran. I dreamed of a new quality of space. Today, the dream has matured, and I want to share it with the great family of sailors. »

Windelo is the desire to expose us to something new, innovative, powerful, bigger than oneself. To seek innovations on materials, techniques of industrialization and uses to impulse a new economic reality. “We want to be part of this transformation related to the respect of our environment, it is for us, essential to work in this respect of men and nature. Men are at the heart of the project with the desire to recruit and form a passionate team, surrounded by experts recognized as the best in their field.

And the innovation doesn’t stop here, because the constructive process makes it possible to envisage fast evolutions from one boat to another while remaining well priced. An ambitious and respectful project ; Welcome to the Windelo adventure.

The set-up of the Maverick 440 Hybrid is for a circumnavigation ready yacht launched on the water in Cape Town, South Africa. This yacht already includes air conditioning, water maker, solar panels, generators and other items required for a circumnavigation.

The yacht comes equipped standard with a generous bank of lithium-iron-phosphate   batteries to provide for your everyday needs and cruising pleasure while living aboard.

Mavericks are built in a semi-custom manner. The hulls & superstructure are production modeled and the owners specify their equipment, layout, and décor.

In this section, we focus on the benefits and set-up of the Electric powertrain. All the other good things you would find on The Maverick 400 & 440 are also available in this model.

hybrid power catamaran for sale

The Maverick 440 Hybrid is an electric motor sailing catamaran. The electric motors are powered by lithium-ion phosphate batteries. The batteries are charged through a number of sources, namely; solar power, wind generators (optional), hydro-regeneration while sailing, shore power, and diesel generator(s).

The dual electric motors operating in pure electric mode from battery power have enough energy from the batteries to perform all anchoring & mooring maneuvers. This covers 90% of your use cases when operating on motors. For off-shore motor cruising & motor-sailing, there is a backup generator.  The Maverick tracks so well through its clever hull design that it only requires one motor to run straight in most conditions off-shore providing double the range.

Our electric powertrain with multiple charging options and GenSet power back-up, with large diesel tanks, makes for the best range of any electric 44ft production cruising catamaran in the world.

Electric Motors are sail drives with feathering propellers provided by Oceanvolt.

Testimonial

Genko Ganev

San Diego, California

"As a professional mechanical engineer, I am very particular about any construction process I am involved in, the quality of the materials and components used, all key ingredients for a high-quality product. Building a “live aboard” catamaran is twice more difficult than building a house in California. Our search for the right boat builder and the right live aboard custom-built catamaran took us over a year and I can confidently say: “We found the right one – Maverick Yachts in Cape Town, South Africa”. After two meetings with Rudi Pretorius at Maverick Yachts, we signed a contract, I quit my day job and relocated to Cape Town for six months while our catamaran was built. True custom-built catamaran, well thought out and build strong. As people say – “They don’t build them like that anymore”. We are extremely happy with our choice and the entire experience was better than expected."

Sail More Often

The ability to sail more often in both light and strong conditions is the best solution for eco-cruising. The Maverick Hybrid catamarans get going under sail in just 4 knots of wind and can tack or gybe under sail power alone in just 6 knots of wind. Maverick catamarans are engineered with high-strength, low-weight materials.

The hulls and the interior modules are foam core using Gurit® Corecell™ foam for weight-saving and durability.

A lightweight catamaran means you sail more often and for longer with less reliance on engines.

The Maverick 400 & 440 catamarans have the shallowest draft of any fixed keel cruising catamaran in the world.

Optimal weight distribution & space-saving have been achieved with the installation of electric drive motors leading to improvements in boat handling, greater load-carrying capacity, and storage space.

Longest Range when Cruising

Maverick Yachts electric motors with the range extension system allow you to travel further on motors alone than any other  44ft electric cruising catamaran on the market today.

The total cruising range setting off with full battery bank and diesel backup for electric sail drive engines  (i.e. no sail power) is calculated at over 1’000 nautical miles. (1’850 km). This range is under calm (neutral) sea conditions at 5 knots.

The cruising range extends further through solar charging.

Cruising range is unlimited when hydro-regeneration is combined in the right proportions with sailing.

Extend your Range

Together with solar power and wind generation you can extend your range on engines and reduce the need for diesel.

The Maverick 440 Hybrid is fitted standard with 42kW of lithium-iron-phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries, 650 watts of solar panels, and 800-liter (220 gallons) of long-range diesel tanks.

The configuration of the system is customizable to meet owners' requirements. An additional 650 watts of solar panels can be added to the bimini bringing the total of solar power to 1300 watts, consisting of 4 x 325-watt hard panels.

An optional 2 x 400watt wind generators can be added to the system to bring the total solar & wind power generation up to 2'100 watts. With the Maverick Hybrid's ability to recharge its batteries through solar power, wind generators, hydro-generators, and plug-in at the dock there is much less need for refilling your diesel tanks, saving you time and money.

Shore Power charging is available for both 120V and 230V.

 Performance

Maverick Hybrid Oceanvolt electric motors instantly deliver the full torque of the engines from zero revs. With immediate torque throughout your rev range, the handling and performance of the engine power are sublime. This step-change in performance is achieved while enjoying the peace and quiet electric motors provide.

The responsiveness and power of the electric motors provide confidence during docking procedures and on the open ocean through excellent boat handling characteristics in all situations.

The Comfort of Silence

There is nothing better than the comfort of silence when sailing. With the electric motors, you get close to this level of silence when motoring. When at anchor you can enjoy the peace and quiet for hours on board as the large battery pack is powerful enough to run all the electrical house systems.

Due to the large power of the lithium-iron-phosphate (LiFePO4) battery pack, you have a greater ability to run all electrical systems on the yacht for longer periods. The battery pack is strong enough to run your air-conditioning, water maker, dishwasher, windlass, or autopilot without the need to switch on the generator. If you are conservative with your electrical consumption your batteries will recharge only through the use of solar panels, wind generator, and hydro generator. The backup generators are set to automatically come on when required and you can enjoy more silent intervals. The diesel generators are highly insulated to run smoothly & quietly. Overall there is less vibration & noise when the diesel generator is running than traditional diesel engines.

hybrid power catamaran for sale

The Power of Lithium-Ion Batteries

The lithium-iron-phosphate (LiFePO4) battery pack is the source of the main power for all the boat systems and electric motors.  This battery pack has a broader operating range than other traditional battery packs. You can use more of the discharge of the battery and you can charge the battery pack faster. This leads to far greater utilization of your batteries, providing more available amp hours that you can use compared with lead-acid / gel batteries. When you are producing a lot of electric power from solar, wind, and hydro  generators the battery pack can absorb all this charge thereby greatly reducing the battery charge time.

The batteries have less weight, much higher amount of amp hours = higher Energy Density (Wh/kg), charge much faster, and can be discharged to deeper levels than traditional battery packs. This provides more power to all your home systems for longer. While sailing both electric motors can be set to hydro generation and this is a great way to charge your batteries while cruising with a minimum impact on boat speed. In certain conditions, while sailing at higher boat speeds, the electric motors in hydro generation mode have less resistance than folding props.

Beach your Maverick

The Maverick 440 Hybrid sailing catamaran is designed to dry out on its own bottom.

hybrid power catamaran for sale

When setting off onto the open ocean it is good to know you can always get home safe. We use only the most advanced Lithium Iron Phosphate battery technology for safe operation at 48V that is UN38.3 and IEC62281 compliant. This provides a safe and conservative system with its own BMS – battery monitoring system that prevents excessive discharge or overcharging. We have 2 x powerful diesel generators that can provide sufficient power to operate electric motors while by-passing the battery bank. The battery bank can be charged from numerous other sources other than the diesel generators. By design, there are levels of back-up and redundancy built into the systems. This is coherent to the overall design philosophy of Mavericks that is designed to be independent & reliable with dual back-up built into most of the critical boat systems and the use of the highest quality components and materials.

Less Maintenance

Electric motors require far less maintenance than diesel engines. They have far fewer moving parts. The average diesel engine has 300+ moving parts including the transmission. The electric sail drive motors have less than seven moving parts and no transmission is required.

2 X electric motors replace the traditional diesel engines.

For charging & operating efficiencies electric motors and house systems share the same MAIN battery bank. For house loads, they draw from a 12v battery topped up by the  MAIN battery bank.

Diesel generators run in their optimum rev range with low resistance leading to greater longevity and less maintenance.

The elective motors do not require winterization reducing annual engine maintenance costs.

Reduced maintenance costs and savings on diesel translate to an overall cost saving over the lifetime of the yacht. This saves time and money for the private owner. For the charter business, these savings translate to greater profitability, better return on investment, more productive time, and ultimately greater customer satisfaction.

Greener Eco -Cruising

The Maverick 440 Hybrid is greener in all aspects.

The system reduces the use of fossil fuel making it cheaper to operate the boat and better for the environment.

Speak To A Silent Yachts Sales Professional

Silent Yachts offer an environmentally conscious choice when it comes to owning a yacht. Silent Yachts currently offers three solar-powered power catamaran models including the Silent 55, Silent 64, and Silent 80. United Yacht Sales is proud to be the U.S. distributor for Silent Yachts and can assist you in your search for the world's first solar-powered yacht. For more information, please contact United Yacht broker Darren Sell at (561) 351-7333 or by email at [email protected] .

Where are Silent Yachts built?

Silent Yachts are built through two different shipyards depending on the model. The Silent 55 is built at the world-class shipyard of Mazarin German Yachts which also has a production site located in China. For over 70 years, Mazarin has been a leader in quality yacht construction with over 400 yachts delivered. Mazarin are experts in innovative construction processes that are able to produce light weight yachts.

The Silent 64 and Silent 80 are produced at the Italian-based shipyard Consorzio Navale which is a prestigous consoritum of builders and sub-contractors in the industry. The group has serviced many of the major Italian yacht brands such as Ferretti Yachts and Riva Yachts . Additionally, the Silent Yachts 80 features styling and design by Marco Casali and naval architecture by Insenaval.

Are Silent Yachts really completely solar-powered?

The short answer is yes. Owners can choose to go 100% solar-powered or install diesel engines should higher speeds want to be achieved over longer distances. Silent Yachts can cruise up to 100 miles per day by power acquired through its solar panels. Every day the solar panels are able to generate more power than the total consumption needed for propulsion at cruising speeds plus powering all of the appliances on board.

How does the solar power work?

The Silent Yachts power system feeds the electric propulsion of the power cat and all of the energy it needs to run the A/C, refrigerators, and other household appliances. Light-weight lithium batteries provide an ample amount of energy for everything on board. The lithium batteries used in Silent Yachts are the most expensive ones on the market, but also the most reliable, safe, and have the longest life span.

Solar panels are integrated to the roof of the flybridge hardtop sections instead of just being bolted on top, resulting in no wind load or resistance againest them. Below is a video explaining how the system functions and operates back when Silent Yachts were originally called "Solar Wave":

Who is the team behind Silent Yachts?

Heike and Michael Kohler have sent almost their entire lives on a boat. After more than two decades of using various boats, cruisers, and sailboats on multiple oceans, they became dedicated to finding a better energy source for the propulsion of yachts. Between the years of 2005 and 2009, Heike and Michael tested a number of a multitude of various alternative energy sources. In 2009, SolarWave 46 was launched as a proof of concept for their design. While there are many boats and yachts built that use solar power in some fashion, the Solarwave 46 was the first ocean-going yacht to use solar energy to power everything on board from engines to appliances.

What else is different about how Silent Yachts are built?

Certainly the solar-powered engines and generators are the distinguishing characteristic, but there are a lot of other features that make each Silent Yacht unique. For example, the molds were created using a CNC-milling machine that is able to contruct particular shapes for an optimized design. The materials used in the hull include a carbon compositie that is then resin-infused for a light-weight, but very strong platform. Every hull is fully insulated and the long-term durability is exceptional thanks to the high-quality resin used in the infusion process.

What propulsion systems are recommended by Silent Yachts?

Silent Yachts recommends the 2 x 135 engines as the best solution. If the owner is making frequest trips from Point A to B (Say Miami to the Bahamas for example) the faster hybrid is recommended. The main differentiator here is cruising speed. If the owner is living on the yacht for an extended period of time, rarely pushes the engines to top speeds, and stays below 12 knots, then the E-Power is recommended.

When the generator is running, does the 100Kw go to charging the batteries (which run the 250 Kw e-Motors) or directly to the e-Motors?

All of the enery consumers and producers are connected to the bus bar. If there happens to be more power produced than consumed, the excess power goes to re-charge the batteries. If for some reason more power is required than what is produced, the needed power comes from the lithium batteries.

What is the sustained speed if both 100 Kw generators are running?

This answer really depends upon sea condition and the weight of the boat (for example components, additional equipment, water toys, etc.). The sustained speed on average though is between 12 and 14 knots, 10 knots with one generator running. It is possible to cruise at 10 knots without a generator running when using the Solar E-Power.

"OSPREY"

Hunt Yachts Harrier 26-2016-OSPREY Wilmington-North Carolina-United StatesOSPREY 3234641

DETAILS ABOUT THIS BOAT

OSPREY is a fine example of a very hard-to-come-by 2016 Hunt Harrier 26 powered with the optional Yamaha 300hp outboard motor with only 215 hours. Lift-kept with custom sun covers, she shows beautifully with her Stars & Stripes blue hull, Oyster White boot stripe and black bottom. In 2018 the Yamaha outboard motor was painted to match the gelcoat and a faux teak transom was applied, nice custom touches done by the Hinckley Company. Properly maintained and serviced (full outboard motor service, with computer check and compression test, March 2022) make OSPREY a true ‘turn key’ offering. This is a great opportunity to acquire a nearly-new Hunt Harrier 26 in time for Spring!

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

Car research, sign in, series vs. parallel hybrid cars: what's the difference, hybrid automobiles employ a combination of electric generator output and old-fashioned gasoline engines for power..

author-image

Quicktakes:

  • A series hybrid motor is directly connected to the transmission
  • A parallel hybrid motor and engine power the drivetrain together
  • The series-parallel hybrid engine and motor can work independently

With hybrid vehicles now well established in the automotive marketplace, consumers clearly understand the basics of the technology — or at least its ability to reduce fuel consumption when compared with a gas-only engine. As a middle ground between gas and electric, hybrids make motoring more energy efficient and environmentally friendly by pairing a traditional internal-combustion engine with an electric motor.

But not all hybrids use those components in the same way. The differences lie in how power is created and put into motion on the road. There are three types of hybrid systems, known as series, parallel, and series-parallel.

A Series Hybrid Motor Is Directly Connected to the Transmission

In a series hybrid, only the electric motor is directly connected to the transmission, making series hybrids more akin to fully electric vehicles than other types of hybrids. In fact, they're often referred to as extended-range electric vehicles.

Instead of directly powering the drivetrain, the gas engine serves as a generator that powers the electric motor and, in combination with regenerative braking, recharges the battery. The car's computer determines how much power comes from the battery pack and how much comes from the generator based on driving conditions.

The gas engine operates only when necessary. In slow or stop-and-go traffic, where series hybrids typically excel, the computer may opt to power the vehicle entirely by its battery pack, saving the gas engine for situations where it's the more efficient option.

The gas engine in a series hybrid is typically small since the electric engine does much of the heavy lifting. Series hybrids employ traction motors rather than an old-fashioned mechanical transmission and clutch, so they tend to be easier to manufacture, but the large and more complicated battery and motor can make them more expensive for consumers.

Series hybrid systems have been used in vehicles including the luxury Fisker Karma Revero electric sports sedan, as well as the first-generation Chevrolet Volt sold through the 2015 model year. The tech dates back more than a century, though gas-only powertrains proved decisive victors for most of the 1900s.

A Parallel Hybrid Motor and Engine Power the Drivetrain Together

In a parallel hybrid, the engine and motor work together — in parallel, as the name indicates — to power the drivetrain. A computer splits the power demands between the two systems as needed to optimize efficiency.

Because the engine is connected directly to the transmission, parallel hybrids don't have to convert the engine's mechanical energy into electrical energy and then back into mechanical energy through the motor, the way a series hybrid does. This improves efficiency during highway driving but reduces efficiency somewhat in stop-and-go traffic.

These vehicles typically use larger engines and smaller battery packs than series hybrids. They rely mostly on regenerative braking to recharge the battery, but when demands on the motor are low enough, it can also be used for charging, much like a conventional car's alternator.

A parallel hybrid cannot drive in fully electric mode.

Parallel systems were first offered to the mass market in Honda vehicles, with the Integrated Motor Assist system introduced in the Insight hybrid in 1999.

While conventional parallel hybrid systems have fallen by the wayside, the basic tech gave birth to through-the-road hybrid systems consisting of an additional electric motor on the axle not driven by the gas engine. Through-the-road hybrid systems in turn give all-wheel drive traction with the promise of improved fuel economy.

The Series-Parallel Hybrid Engine and Motor Can Work Independently

The series-parallel combination hybrid system, found on the Toyota Prius since 2001, allows the vehicle to operate entirely on either the gas engine or the generator/battery system, independently.

Series-parallel hybrids — also sometimes called power-split hybrids — offer the flexibility of both power sources working either independently or in conjunction with each other. That equates to added range and boost from the refillable gasoline engine, plus tailpipe emissions-free electric-only driving when possible, such as at lower speeds or under light-load cruising situations.

E-Motion Rudder Drive, an electric engine with… the Propeller installed into the Rudder

E-Motion Rudder Drive

Hanse Yachts introduces E-Motion Rudder Drive – an interesting propulsion type, with a special folding propeller….

An electric engine and a folding propeller have been installed into the rudder shaft, replacing the combination of diesel engine and sail drive. As a result, the propeller thrust is in line with the rudder position. This enables turning in the smallest circles or rotating around your own keel; it could be a perfect solution for maneuvering in narrow ports.

Making 4.5 knots with calm seas, the new Hanse 315 equipped with four lithium-ion batteries has a range of up to to 30 nautical miles – enough for all European inland waters and many coastal waters. At lower speeds, the range is significantly increased. The Rudder Drive can also be used with two batteries if a shorter range is required. The maximum speed is 6.1 knots – nearing the maximum speed of the diesel version.

The quiet Rudder Drive is also lightweight: 100 kg less than the diesel saildrive option. The Rudder Drive does not require a hole through the hull, lowering the resistance while sailing. The electric drive’s simplicity means less maintenance, as well.

From a standstill position, the yacht immediately starts to turn without having to pick up speed first. In addition, you enjoy all benefits of an electric engine. It will be the future?

Hanse 460 review: First in a new range

  • David Harding
  • January 26, 2023

The Hanse 460 is the first in a new range of Hanses. From new designers, she is already a big hit, with over 200 sold and a European Yacht of the Year win to its name. David Harding reports

hanse electric sailboat

Product Overview

Price as reviewed:.

For some of us, sailing has always been about the functional and fundamental. We enjoy sailing for sailing’s sake. But today people want so much more from a boat and, in many respects, today’s yachts undoubtedly offer a lot more and the Hanse 460 attempts to do just that.

What you might loosely call the mainstream European builders of family cruising yachts have been following this path for some time, making each generation of designs bigger and plusher than the last. For Hanse in particular, it has been a rapid evolution from the small, basic and functional to the large and luxurious.

This latest Hanse is the first to be designed by Berret-Racoupeau. After the earliest models, which used the moulds of discontinued, slim-hulled Scandinavian designs, every Hanse has been designed by Judel/Vrolijk in what became one of boatbuilding’s most enduring and successful partnerships.

In line with modern trends, each new wave of Hanses has been higher, wider and more voluminous than the last. Founder Michael Schmidt never lost sight of the performance side, however. For all their growing girths and towering topsides, Hanse has always made boats that sail – competitively-priced, high-volume cruisers but with easy handling (self-tacking jibs were used from the early days) and better performance than many of the alternatives.

The Hanse 460 is different. Very different. The first model from a new alliance with the French designers, it promptly won the European Yacht of the Year as the best Family Cruiser for 2022. A Hanse 510 version now follows.

The big question was whether Hanse had managed to do something different while retaining the qualities that its owners had traditionally sought.

At a glance, the Hanse 460 looks sleeker and sportier than earlier models; more angular, with a reverse rake to the bow and a pronounced knuckle running to about half-way aft. In Hanse tradition there are no hard-angled chines but, in this case, a pronounced soft chine towards the stern. In plan view you see full forward sections which, combined with the broad stern, generous freeboard and ample beam, hold the promise of enormous interior volume.

At the other end, a moulded bowsprit projects the anchor clear of the stem and provides an attachment point for an outer forestay which can carry a reaching headsail. Large windows in the topsides help to break up the high freeboard.

Scale those topsides and you’re faced with an expanse of wide, flat deck and coachroof. Moulded bulwarks edge the side decks to help keep feet where they belong should you venture forward when the boat’s heeled. Otherwise what stands out is the uncluttered appearance – lines are led aft beneath separate mouldings – and the plethora of deck hatches hinged every which way, including one that opens to reveal a large bow locker.

There was certainly nothing to complain about in the performance and handling department. We slipped along very nicely on a flat sea in 12-14 knots of wind, clocking around 7.5 knots with the apparent wind at just under 30°, and tacking through around 80° by the compass.

Enjoyable sailing

Weather helm was slight and the load on the wheels increased relatively little if I tried bearing away with the sheets pinned in, the single rudder providing plenty of grip. Provoked in the opposite direction, she coped well when pinched mercilessly and also when thrown into tight spins, only stalling briefly.

At least in the flat water and modest breeze we encountered, the cockpit worked well. In any wind and seaway you would be pleased to have the optional second table to port as a bracing point. At the helm stations you have a comfortable perch outboard of the wheel or, for energetic downwind sailing when you might need both hands, behind it. The Jefa linkage is light and direct, giving a good feel from the rudder. On the starboard side you can wind down the bifurcated backstay when extra headstay tension is needed.

Today’s cockpits are no longer just places from where you control the boat. Controlling the boat in itself is so much easier anyway, especially if – as most owners of the Hanse 460 will – you upgrade to electric winches, electric in-mast reefing and electric furling for the genoa on the outer forestay.

Other push-button options are for the hinge-down bathing platform and the cockpit tables (either side or both), which can be lowered to create large lounging areas. Alternatively there are fixed tables, as we had on the port side. A wet-bar can be added between the helm seats. It’s all part of making the cockpit a multi-function space in which every part can serve a variety of purposes. Cockpit stowage is in the form of a half-depth locker each side and – a first for Hanse – a dedicated liferaft locker right aft to starboard. With the electric-lowering option for the starboard table comes an extra moulded seat pod, which provides readily-accessible shallow stowage forward of the starboard helm and would be good to have for that reason alone.

Moving about the deck and cockpit, and from one to the other, is easy in good weather. The wide open spaces let you simply stroll around – or lounge if you’re so inclined. Then again, they tend to present more of a challenge when a boat’s bouncing and heeling.

Lifestyle choices

Externally, the hull lines clearly differentiate the 460 from her earlier stablemates, but down below it’s a world apart. It’s certainly a more classy finish than we’ve seen before from Hanse; restrained in tone and a level above what we have become used to. Berret-Racoupeau is one of relatively few yacht design studios to have its own interior-design division.

A host of interior layouts is available, from three to five cabins, up to four showers and from six to 10 berths. About the only constant is the presence of twin double cabins in the stern. Otherwise you can have different arrangements in the bow (cabins and heads) and amidships with a long or short linear galley and a bunk cabin or utility room to starboard where our boat had a chart table and heads compartment.

Details include backrests that hinge down in the saloon to provide trays and drinks-holders. You can press a button to lower the table, press another to pop up the TV from its central pod, and settle in for the evening.

Down here it’s all about sight-lines, integrating the different areas so no one feels left out, and ensuring that, as in the cockpit, every part of the layout performs multiple functions. In practice it creates a thoroughly pleasant and remarkably light environment.

Sometimes you come across a boat that makes you realise not only that yacht design has changed irrevocably, but also why it has changed and why it’s not going back. The Hanse 460 is unquestionably such a boat. How the crew lives aboard and moves around, both above and below decks, has clearly been thought about in the context of modern lifestyles. And this boat exudes style. If you like the fundamental design, you will be able to tailor many of the options and details to suit your tastes. A yacht like this is unlikely to slice to windward in heavy weather as comfortably as, say, a first-generation Swan 46, but most people aren’t really interested in that these days. I suspect the new Hanse will prove to be a pretty quick and competent all-rounder nonetheless. Simple sailing? The technology is not remotely simple any more. But with the Hanse 460, the sailing itself is simple and can still be a lot of fun.

Technology cooperation for new sailing yacht drive

Rudder Drive, the new electric propulsion system for sailing yachts developed by Torqeedo together with the large-scale boat builder Hanse Yachts and rudder manufacturer Jefa, combines outstanding maneuverability and minimal weight with a powerful emission-free motor.

The core of this innovative concept is the proven and specially adapted Torqeedo Cruise 4.0 with folding propeller, designed in to the rudder blade itself. The streamlined system replaces the combustion inboard or saildrive and removes the need for a separate thruster on the new sailing yacht Hanse 315 e-motion rudder drive, which debuts at the end of October.

Outstanding maneuverability

Due to the unique rudder placement of the 4 kW (8 horsepower equivalent) Torqeedo electric motor, the motor can apply efficient, directional thrust. The Jefa rudder blade’s range of motion was extended to a total of 100 degrees. Demanding maneuvers can now be accomplished without a separate thruster. While motoring, the yacht can spin on its own axis – both forward and in reverse. While docking, the stern can easily be maneuvered into the proper position. This is highly useful in windy conditions or in narrow slips.

Exceptional endurance with minimal weight

Power generation while sailing

With integrated Torqeedo fast chargers, the emission-free version of the Hanse 315 is fully charged in just three hours. The batteries can be recharged at the dock or during sailing when the Rudder Drive’s folding propeller is used to generate power. Torqeedo is the only manufacturer of electric boat propulsion systems offering industrial engineering, complete system integration and ISO 9001 certified serial production in Germany.

World launch at the Hanseboot Hamburg

For the first time, the new propulsion system will be presented installed in the Hanse 315 e-motion rudder drive at the International Boat Show Hanseboot 2016 in Hamburg. We are looking forward to welcoming you to the Hanse Yachts booth (hall 6, booth C108) on Sunday, October 30, 2016 at 2 pm.

Nominee Spotlight: Hanse 510

  • By Andrew Parkinson
  • October 5, 2023

The Berret-Racoupeau-designed Hanse 460 turned heads as a 2022 Boat of the Year nominee with a fresh take on comfort and volume but with an eye better sailing performance. The second model in the new range designed by the Berret-Racoupeau team, the Hanse 510 is set to make its US premiere at the 2023 Annapolis Sailboat Show—again as a Boat of the Year contender. From what our editors saw at the model’s recent showing in Cannes, the 510 is expected to be a formidable opponent in its category during CW ’s Boat of the Year judging.

Bow of the Hanse 510

As for dockside demeanor, this new range’s calling card appears to be a marked chine on the bow and an inverted bow to optimize sailing performance. According to the designers, attention was also paid to refining the hull shape to maximize interior space. The result is an easy-on-the-eyes 51-footer that values smooth sailing and fast, comfortable cruising.

According to the builder, the Hanse 510 offers unrivalled volume in the 50-foot class, courtesy of an optimized hull design. Chines at the bow and aft further allow for a slim waterline, ensuring prime performance and easy sailing.

The 510 is equipped with a large, practical dinghy garage, capable of holding an inflated dinghy of up to 8.8 feet; and the optional, newly developed Hanse Smart Tender System makes launching that dinghy as simple as “driving a car out of the garage.” Convenience and style dominate the interior. Even the crew cabin gets in on the volume action, as it’s much more than the typical (read: small) crew sleeping space—it is a room worthy of staying a while. The options list is lengthy, and the boat can be highly customized to meet owners’ needs.

Hanse 510 rear

“Expectations were high after the outstandingly successful Hanse 460, which has been awarded European Yacht of the Year,” says Hanjo Runde, CEO of HanseYachts. “The new Hanse 510 is the logical and consistent further development of the new concept. With her impressive volume, tremendously dynamic lines and countless options, she is redefining the 50-foot class. It is an easy to sail and enormously spacious private retreat.”

The key talking points of the 510 are numerous. A hydrodynamic design with a slender waterline promotes better hull speed. Chines fore and aft allow for a wider hull and more interior space. The reverse, wave-piercing bow makes the yacht pitch less in strong winds, while the pronounced bow chines keep the foredeck as dry as possible. On deck, the strategically placed helm position promotes total control of the Hanse 510 in any situation, with all navigation and performance information easily accessible, as well as all lines and even the electric winches on the port side. An optional hardtop shades the entire cockpit including the steering positions, and it blends seamlessly with the boat’s silhouette. It is also available in several colors and accommodates special lighting and solar panels. A fixed windscreen is another option.

Hanse 510 at anchor

The novel dinghy garage is capable of holding a dinghy of up to 8.8 ft without having to deflate it. Combined with the optional automatic comfort stairs and the newly developed Hanse Smart Tender System, a single crew member can safely and comfortably deploy the dinghy, including engine, in minutes.

Another novelty on the Hanse 510 is the easy-to-open life raft storage space in the cockpit. Situated just in front of the companionway, it’s easily accessible and has space for standard 8-person life raft containers. An optional wet bar with grill and sink is hinged at the stern so as not to absorb precious cockpit space.

The boat comes rigged with a self-tacking jib, and all lines run back to the cockpit for simple sail handling of the 710 sq. ft. mainsail and various headsails. The jib is 570 sq. ft. and the reacher measures 1,011 sq. ft., set up using a Solent-style rig on the custom bowsprit. Air draft of the deck-stepped mast is just over 77 feet above the waterline. Optional electric furling systems and winches make light work of handling halyards and sheets for the optimum in performance, short-handed sailing. The standard boat comes with a single, 80 hp saildrive, although an upgraded, optional 110 hp diesel is also available.

Hanse 510 interior

Within the interior, 14 well positioned opening hatches and eight opening windows and portholes permit maximum light and ventilation below deck. A long list of layout options are said to be available for the interior arrangement, from an “owner’s yacht” with a best-in-class sized master cabin, to a “charter yacht” with 10 berths, three bathrooms and an additional skipper cabin. The galley can be fully adapted to the owner’s needs as well: In addition to various refrigerator and freezer options, there is room for a wine cooler, dishwasher and a three-burner gas cooker plus an oven in the longitudinal pantry, which can be customized with a vast choice of colors and materials. Another option is a fully equipped navigation area with a forward-facing seat and a large salon table. The extensive options list, ranging from a washing machine in the utility room to flatscreens in the master cabin and salon, is crowned by the Flagship Package, which includes highest-end fabrics and materials, not to mention a “hidden” bar behind the folding backrest in the salon.

At its core, the Hanse 510 emphasizes a roomy cockpit, large but manageable sail plan, and overall performance that is easily managed by a couple, but perhaps what really sets the Hanse 510 apart from other sailboats in its class is the limitless level of customization the builder is willing to offer. The Hanse 510 also comes with a CE rating of A-12, so it is well suited for those who want to venture longer distances.

The nation’s first all-electric tug boat has docked at the Port of San Diego and expects to begin emissions-free operations in about a month.

Operated by Crowley Maritime Corporation , the 82-foot eWolf will escort ships entering and leaving the Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal using electric power instead of diesel fuel, helping slash greenhouse gas emissions at the port and its neighbors in Barrio Logan and National City.

For the record:

1:58 p.m. March 13, 2024 This story has been updated to show the correct amount of government funding that went to the project.

“This is a big deal,” said port chairman Frank Urtasun at a news conference Monday. “This is new technology.”

Capable of speeds of up to 12 knots, the eWolf is powered by a 6.2 megawatt-hour main propulsion battery and two electric drives. The tug has thrust — also known as bollard pull in the parlance of the shipping industry — of 76.8 short tons, which is more powerful than the diesel-powered counterparts at the port.

Constructed in Alabama, the eWolf is equipped with two small generators for emergency use that allow the boat to travel longer distances at a reduced speed.

“Like an electric car, you step on the gas and it jumps,” said Paul Manzi, vice president of Crowley Shipping, based in Jacksonville, Fla. “All of the attributes that you have with an electric motor operation in a car or in an electric truck, you see here in the (eWolf) at massive scale. And it’s extremely quiet so when it pulls away from the dock you literally won’t hear any noise.”

The tug boat’s electricity will come from a charging station that is part of a microgrid facility equipped with two energy storage containers. Battery modules in each container have storage capacity of nearly 1.5 megawatt-hours.

Interconnected with the help of San Diego Gas & Electric, the charging station at the port is designed to allow the vessel to recharge quickly and reduce peak loads on the electric grid.

Operators plan to charge the eWolf overnight so it can perform its chores during daytime hours.

“This technology has individually been around for a while, but it hasn’t necessarily been integrated and optimized to all work together — and that’s kind of our role,” said Bruce Strupp, vice president at ABB Marine & Ports , the company that designed the boat’s propulsion system. “Some of the technology is our technology, some of it’s third-party technology, but we integrate it all together.”

The electric tug boat is expected to begin commercial operations at the port in mid- to late-April, depending on the completion of the charging station.

The all-electric eWolf tugboat at the Port of San Diego

Officials at Crowley did not release the eWolf’s price tag Monday, saying only that it cost about twice as much as a conventional diesel-powered tug boat of comparable size.

But, Manzi said, the company expects the eWolf’s maintenance and operating costs will be “dramatically lower” than what’s spent on a diesel-powered tug boat because the electric model has fewer moving parts.

The entire project — the vessel as well as the charging station — received four grants that added up to $13.67 million, with two grants of $10.9 million from the San Diego Air Pollution Control District, one grant of just over $2 million from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and $750,000 from the federal government’s Maritime Administration.

In 2020, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an executive order that directed state agencies to transition off-road vehicles — including tug boats — and equipment to 100 percent zero emissions by 2035.

By replacing one of the port’s diesel-powered tugs, the eWolf is expected to eliminate the consumption of about 35,000 gallons of diesel fuel per year. In its first 10 years of use, the electric tug boat is expected to reduce about 3,100 metric tons of carbon dioxide from the port and its surrounding areas such as Barrio Logan and National City.

“We’re trying to be good neighbors and trying to be able to help to reduce emissions here to help the electrification movement,” Urtasun said, adding that the port has spent about $130 million on various electrification projects.

Last year, the Port of San Diego became the first in North America to install a pair of all-electric cranes to load and off-load heavy cargo. Each 262 feet high, the cranes replaced an older crane that ran on diesel fuel. Together, the cranes expect to help the port reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 47 metric tons per year.

Ljubljana, Slovenia - March 21, 2024 —

Much like their highly acclaimed 4X tender, the upcoming 9X model sports EJET’s proprietary electric motor and drivetrain, going in line with founder Žiga Jarc’s mission of providing sustainable transportation options for yacht owners and guests. Both models will be available in the summer, with the 9X build slated for initial testing in July.

For more information, please visit https://ejet.co/

The announcement follows EJET’s recent appearance at the Boot Düsseldorf Boat Show. Having received the International Boat Industry’s Rising Star Award, the company revealed the development of its larger 9X model with the aim of promoting environmental responsibility within the boating industry.

Designed to be lightweight and compact without sacrificing output or speed, the new tender will be powered by a 220 kWh battery and a 300 kW motor, with an option to upgrade to 340 kW, ensuring 98% efficiency and making it suitable for sports such as water skiing. The boat’s V-shaped hull has been adjusted to accommodate EJET’s custom electric powertrain and is capable of withstanding turbulent waters and inclement weather conditions. Each boat is built with standard hydraulic steering mechanisms, along with the company’s military-grade jet system, allowing for easy maneuvering, reversing, and sudden stops in both low- and high-speed scenarios.

The 9X model will also feature a digital interface, which boaters will be able to use to select different driving modes and dynamics, view real-time GPS navigation and system data, and access the smart audio Bluetooth system. Additionally, amenities such as a hydraulic bathing platform, an electric grill, an ice maker, and a refrigerator will all be available as upgrade options for all 9X tenders.

About EJET Electric Yacht Tenders

What candela’s electric hydrofoiling passenger ferry means for sustainable transportation.

The all-electric-powered Candela P-12 ferry flies over the water on hydrofoils

I would never say “I told you so,” but…now that Candela , the world’s leading producer of all-electric-powered hydrofoiling boats, has just closed the largest funding round in the company's history, I might be bold enough to say…”I’m not surprised.”

That’s because I’ve been closely following the development of this wonderfully smart company’s hydrofoiling boats since I test flew a P-7 near their small and efficient shop in Stockholm in 2021. So, I’m really not surprised they just raised over $25 million to expand production of their game-changing P-12 ferry. And since yacht building powerhouse Groupe Beneteau is a key partner in the largest fundraising round Candela has ever completed it appears Candela’s brand of tech-controled hydrofoiling is about to go global.

“Our investment perfectly aligns with Groupe Beneteau‘s ecological transition objectives, scaling up innovative solutions for more sustainable boating and unparalleled experiences,” says Bruno Thivoyon, CEO of Groupe Beneteau, the world's largest boat manufacturer (15 factories, 9 brands, and more than 8,000 yachts built annually) with a total revenue of over $1.5 billion in 2023. “Candela’s technology, enabling significantly more efficient electric vessels, will transform waterborne transport into its next sustainable phase.”

A Candela P-8 and P-12 underway near Stockholm, Sweden

“We couldn’t be more excited about having Groupe Beneteau on board,” says Gustav Hasselskog, Founder and CEO of Candela. “As the leading global boat company, their trust is a stamp of approval for our technology to transform waterborne transportation. We’re excited for the possibilities ahead."

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

The new investment round will help to scale up production to meet demand for the recently launched Candela P-12, the world’s first electric hydrofoil ferry. The P-12 is the first fast and long-range electric ferry on the market. Its efficient hydrofoil technology cuts lifetime emissions by 97.5% compared to diesel vessels, while simultaneously allowing operators to save up to 50% in operating costs. Since it generates minimal wake, the P-12 has been granted exemptions from speed limits, as for example on its maiden route in Stockholm, where it from July will cut travel times in half compared to road transport and legacy diesel vessels.

And it’s pretty obvious Hasselskog and company are on the right track. According to some projections the market for electric vessels is expected to be worth $14.2 Billion USD in 2030.

“We’ve spent years developing the technological maturity, and now we’re fit for scaling to commercial vessels. As in any industry, the fastest-scaling company will dominate the market,” says Hasselskog.

The Candela P-8 and P-12 hardly make a ripple as they fly over the water on computer-controlled ... [+] hydrofoils

Other backers in the round include longtime investors EQT Ventures , Ocean Zero LLC , and Kan Dela AB. The new investment brings total funding since Candela’s inception to over $75 million.

“EQT Ventures has steadfastly backed Candela's vision to accelerate the shift towards fossil fuel-free lakes and oceans since 2021. The launch of Candela's P-12 vessels signifies a watershed moment in sustainable transport", says Lars Jörnow, Partner at EQT Ventures.

The only question is: when will we see a P-12 ferry here in the US?

Candela’s electric ferries multiply as the startup lines up $25M in new funding

hanse electric sailboat

Electric boat maker Candela is approaching cruising speed with $25 million in new funding and the first commercial deployment of its new P-12 ferry in New Zealand. The company has global ambitions for its highly efficient boats and has completed and delivered dozens of them — which is a lot in this industry!

Candela has been slowly upping the size of its vessels for years, starting with the considerably smaller C-7 and C-8 (noting the length in meters) — of which, as of this week, they have now produced a total of 70. The P-12, a ferry design that can handle up to 30 passengers, made its debut late last year .

Just last week, the P-12 was given its first assignment: ferry people around New Zealand’s Lake Manapōuri , a scenic destination but also, more importantly, the site of the country’s largest hydroelectric power station. And now staff at that station can get to work via clean-running boat rather than driving, which the companies estimate will save around 240 tons of emissions per year. It’s a start, and it will help keep the lake clean and quiet.

International interest in these boats is also evident in the participation of Groupe Beneteau, a more than century-old boating company that makes thousands of vessels yearly, in the funding round. Groupe Beneteau CEO Bruno Thivoyon expressed in the press release that investing in Candela makes sense as part of the company’s “ecological transition objectives, scaling up innovative solutions for more sustainable boating.”

Many legacy boating companies are embracing electric engines and next-generation tech; I spoke with the head of another major manufacturer, Brunswick’s Dave Foulkes, at CES about it. He said that the collaborations are fruitful because the small, growing companies need the income and reach, while the larger ones need ready-to-deploy tech. Like any other industry, you have to know when to buy and when to build, and big boating companies are happy to buy — or invest.

Candela’s boats use hydrofoils with electric engines mounted on the bottom to effectively fly above the surface of the water once they get past a certain speed, vastly reducing energy consumption — historically and understandably a sticking point for electric boating. The approach does necessitate a powerful autopilot to keep it balanced, and despite their assurances, I wonder about how they’d handle log collisions, but overall the advantages seem to outweigh the drawbacks.

I drove one over the summer in Seattle (watching closely for logs, rather common in Elliott Bay) and wished they would replace the gas-chugging fast passenger ferries with P-12s. Candela isn’t the only one pursuing this market, either; Navier is also attempting to woo coastal communities with the draw of quiet, energy-efficient transit and is currently shuttling Stripe employees around the Bay Area . And while Zin Boats has been quiet for some time, they are also nailing down markets for the next version of their vessel.

The $25 million round was led, as mentioned, by Beneteau, with participation from EQT Ventures, Ocean Zero LLC, and Kan Dela AB.
