The Flip-Kat’s® pedal drive is unlike any other on the market. It’s fully integrated into the Flip-Kat® and is ready to go when you flip it up. With multiple adjustable positions in the pedal drive alone there is a spot for everyone. Shallow water, logs, stumps and rocks are no problem for the auto kick-up prop shaft. The Flip-Kat® can also accommodate the Bixpy jet drive in conjunction with the pedal drive or as a stand alone propulsion system.

Chair & Leaning Post

The Flip-Kat’s® catamaran hull design offers an unbelievably stable platform with a 4 foot wide deck that allows you the freedom you need to work a fish or take that odd shot at a duck. The center cockpit is a raised deck, positioned above the hulls to help keep you high and dry whether fishing, hunting or pedaling to your next destination. The two 11 feet 3-inch-long flat bottom cat hulls cut through the chop and get you into and out of the shallows. The two large side hulls offer 5 cubic feet of covered cargo space to keep your decoys, fish bags, soft coolers, dry bags, or your day’s bounty. With the chair in the leaning post position, you are secure and comfortable for stand-up sight casting, fly fishing and bow fishing. For the duck hunters the Flip-Kat® makes for a great portable duck blind. Adventure, Recreation, & Photography

Adventure, Recreation, & Photography

The Flip-Kat® is perfect for a day out in the sun with your family and friends. In kayaking, one of the highest concerns is stability for young and old. The Flip-Kat® makes for a comfortable and secure feeling on the water. Don't be afraid to take a dip and cool off, the drop down step/handle allows you to exit and re-enter the Flip-Kat® with ease. The multi-position chair and pedal drive offers a combination of over 250 positions to fit almost everyone. Our incredibly stable kayak is also perfect for on the water scenic photography. Sneaking up on wildlife is a breeze with the whisper quiet pedal drive. Flip-Kats® give you the ability to pedal, paddle, or jet your way across the lake to your favorite destination to get that perfect pic!

For Rescue & Wildlife Enforcement

For Rescue & Wildlife Enforcement

The extremely stable Flip-Kat® makes a perfect everyday add on for rescue and wildlife enforcement agencies. Its ability to be stored inside or on the back of a vehicle full time yet be rapidly deployed when the need arises. The additional stability of the catamaran design makes it more secure than the traditional kayak; especially when dealing with panicked people or wildlife. With four sealed pontoons, staying afloat is significantly more reliable in rough situations. The adjustability of the seat and pedal drive also allow the user to sit much higher on the kayak for a significantly better vantage point and full access to their gear/toolbelt. This can make the difference between life and death when making a stop or looking for something or someone in distress.

Stable + Playful

The large 4-foot-wide deck gives you plenty of stand up, stable, moving around room so you’re not stuck in that one aching position all day. In hot weather, you can take a dip in the water and use the pull-down step system to get back on deck easily!

The Biyak Catamaran: Redefining Kayaking

Paddle, pedal, sail, pole, sit, stand...everything else. Photo: Courtesy Biyak Boats

Imagine a kayak that combines the best features of various watercraft, allowing you to paddle, pedal, sail, pole, and even stand. Meet the Biyak Catamaran, a revolutionary design that pushes the boundaries of traditional kayaking. Created by the talented designer Aaron Baldwin, the Biyak seamlessly merges versatility, functionality, and innovation.

Key Takeaways

From Simple Ambition to Extraordinary Creation

The birth of the biyak catamaran, the unveiling of a game-changer, discover the biyak experience.

The Biyak’s journey began years ago when Aaron sought a pedal drive system for his kayak but couldn’t afford the existing options. Determined to find a solution, he set out to build his own. Inspired by the way ducks swim, Aaron devised a unique concept: “folding paddles.” These paddles fold shut on the forward stroke and open on the propulsive stroke, mimicking the movement of a duck’s webbed feet. Transforming his vision into reality, however, proved to be more challenging than anticipated.

Undeterred by setbacks, Aaron tirelessly searched for the perfect materials and hinge system to bring his folding paddle design to life. Countless prototypes filled his shop’s “bucket of failure,” but through persistence and ingenuity, he eventually achieved success. In 2013, his exceptional design was awarded a patent, solidifying his place in kayak innovation.

Biyak body 2

With the folding paddle mechanism perfected, Aaron needed a platform to mount the pedals. Initially, he created a rudimentary structure using plywood, resulting in a blocky-looking punt that served its purpose but lacked an elegant form. It was another designer’s suggestion that led Aaron to the realization that his pedal drive would excel on a catamaran-style kayak, combining stability and agility seamlessly.

Driven by this revelation, Aaron embarked on the arduous task of building wooden prototypes and eventually a fiberglass version. Through continual adjustments and refinements, he meticulously honed the Biyak’s design until he was confident enough to create an ABS prototype using thermoforming techniques. The result exceeded his expectations, delivering a fishing platform that was both narrow enough for efficient paddling and wide enough to provide unmatched stability. The Biyak’s modular design allows it to be conveniently broken down into three components, making car-topping a breeze.

Biyak body 1

Although fishing was Aaron’s primary motivation, the Biyak’s versatility extends far beyond angling. It accommodates various preferences, whether rowing, sailing, or simply cruising. The Biyak is ready for production, marking a significant milestone in Aaron’s journey. However, he recognizes that the boat’s potential is still untapped, with numerous accessories yet to be designed.

With its adjustable beam and catamaran-inspired design, the Biyak introduces a new era in kayaking. Crafted from thermoformed ABS plastic, the Biyak is lightweight and easily transportable. It embodies the perfect balance between performance and convenience, allowing kayakers to explore diverse water environments with ease.

Are you ready to revolutionize your kayaking experience? Explore the endless possibilities offered by the Biyak Catamaran. To learn more about this groundbreaking innovation, visit UpStreamPaddle . The Biyak awaits your adventurous spirit, ready to take you on unforgettable journeys on the water.

Types of Kayaks: Different Kayak Styles Explained

Tom "Moose" Kilpatrick

Kayaks come in so many shapes, sizes, lengths, and colors that it can be difficult to see the wood for the trees.

But why are there so many choices? How do you choose the right kayak?

This article will be your all-important guide to explaining the many different kinds of kayaks and why you would choose one over the others.

What Is a Kayak?

At the most basic level, a kayak is a small boat propelled by a double-bladed paddle. Kayaks differ from canoes, which are designed for you to kneel in and paddle with a single-bladed paddle.

The lines have blurred, though. You can now get kayak-canoe hybrids and SUP kayak hybrids.

You are not limited to paddling, either. There are pedal-powered kayaks and even kayaks with electric trolling motors or small gas outboard motors.

Why Are There Different Styles of Kayaks?

Wouldn’t it be so much easier if there was just one kayak that did everything? Unfortunately, it would probably do everything pretty badly. Different types of water demand different qualities from your kayak as well as abilities from you as a paddler.

Many things can be changed in a kayak to make it perform differently. If you’re not sure what some of the jargon means, we have a whole article on it here .

Kayak Dimensions: Small Kayaks vs. Large Kayaks

One long and two short kayaks with paddlers on the water

Kayak Length

Length is probably the most obvious feature of your kayak at first sight. The length of your kayak affects how fast and maneuverable your kayak is. It also has some impact on the stability of your kayak.

Long kayaks are faster, designed to cover distance more efficiently than short kayaks. These tend to be narrower than shorter kayaks and rely on length and stability.

Short kayaks are more maneuverable, usually designed for environments where making tight turns and quick moves is vital. Shorter kayaks may accelerate faster than a long kayak but will have a limited maximum speed over the water.

Kayak Width

The width of your kayak will directly impact how stable it is. This is especially true of recreational kayaks, which rely on primary stability , or stability when flat, to stay upright. In general terms, the wider your kayak is, the more stable it will be.

A wider kayak will have more surface to drag through the water though. Wide kayaks are slower and less maneuverable than narrow kayaks. It can also be difficult for paddlers with a smaller frame to reach over the side.

Volume and Capacity

The volume of a kayak is simply how much space there is inside the boat. This will directly affect the capacity of your kayak, which is how much weight the kayak can carry before it sinks.

Overloading your kayak will negatively impact on how it paddles. In order to maintain optimal performance from your kayak, you should never exceed 70% of the kayak’s upper weight limit. Remember, your paddling weight includes you, all of your equipment and any spares or specialist kit you are taking on the water with you.

If you are unsure whether your kayak will carry enough of a load, or if you are close to 70% of the weight limit, consider moving up a size.

Kayak Weight

The weight of your kayak will have some effect on it’s performance, but its more noticeable off the water. Moving and storing your kayak can be difficult. You should consider the size and weight of your kayak when thinking about how you are going to move your kayak to the water, as well as where you are going to store your boat.

If you have a small car with a lightweight roof rack , you may find that you can quickly overload it with a heavy kayak or two. Similarly, if you want to create an elaborate system to raise your kayak to the roof of your garage, a heavy boat may be dangerous.

RELATED: Best Lightweight Kayaks

Kayaks come with four main hull types: flat , rounded , v-shaped , and pontoon . There’s a load of detail you can get into on this and it’s easy to geek out on hull shape. For now, we’ll just keep it simple.

Various kayak hull shapes compared

Flat hulled kayaks are probably the most common style. A flat hull gives your kayak stability and maneuverability. Flat hulled kayaks aren’t the fastest style, but they can plane in waves and on rivers.

Rounded Hull

Rounded hulls offer less water resistance than flat hulls and are quicker over the water. They tend to be less stable initially, but have great secondary stability, or stability when a kayak is edged or leaned into a turn.

V-Shaped Hull

V-shaped hulls are designed to track through the water and carry speed. The v-shape can act as a keel and can prevent you from slipping downwind in long crossings. V-shaped hulls feel unstable at first, relying on dynamic stability from movement, and secondary stability.

Pontoon Hull

Pontoon hulls focus solely on stability. The dual-hull design works like a catamaran. This hull shape is commonly found on angling or recreational kayaks where maximum primary stability is necessary. These boats track well but don’t turn or pick up speed effectively.

Edges , chines , and rocker are all part of the hull shape too. Chines and edges affect how much secondary stability a kayak has. Certain kayak designs rely on these edges to initiate and hold an effective turn.

The rocker profile of your kayak is the front-to-back curve of the boat. A kayak with high rocker looks banana shaped, all the way from the front to the back. Other kayaks have an upturned, or rockered, bow, with a flat stern, or varied rocker along the length of the hull.

A low rocker kayak is going to appear flatter, and will grip the water more effectively to track in the wind. A kayak with more rocker will turn more quickly and ride over waves more easily.

Kayak Type: Sit-on-Top or Sit-Inside?

You have to start somewhere when it comes to picking your perfect kayak. Deciding whether you want a sit-on-top or a sit-in kayak is as good a place as any.

Sit-on-Top Kayaks

FeelFree Moken 10 kayak

SIt-on-top kayaks have become increasingly popular in recent years. These kayaks have a sealed hull, but the top deck is open, often with a seat either molded to the top deck or fitted on bolts. Sit-on-top kayaks tend to be wider than sit-in kayaks, giving them a high level of primary stability.

This stability, combined with the fact that you don’t remain in these kayaks in the event of a capsize, has made them popular with recreational paddlers and families. They’re also easy to climb back on, and you don’t have to bail any water away in the event of a capsize.

Also check out our post on the best sit-on-top kayaks .

Sit-in Kayaks

Eddyline Sky 10 kayak

Traditional sit-in-style kayaks have a cockpit where the paddler sits. In these kayaks, the bottom half of the paddler is sheltered inside the kayak, which makes them more suitable for colder or windier environments. These kayaks are also drier paddling in waves and on rivers.

Sit-in kayaks require some capsize practice, especially if you are going to use a spray skirt on the water. These skirts prevent water from filling up your cockpit, but also keep you in the kayak if you capsize.

How many paddlers can your kayak carry?

How many paddlers do you want to take on the water? What size are your paddlers? Do you have pets you want to take kayaking?

Most styles of kayak are available in solo , tandem, or tandem+ options. Tandem and tandem+ kayaks allow you to take a partner or pet out on the water with you. Almost every style of kayak is available in tandem, from sea kayaks to whitewater kayaks.

Tandem+ kayaks vary from a two-person kayak with an extra seat, to enormous three-person options. These kayaks are suitable for families or pairs with pets they want to take out. They also suit pairs of kayakers who want to expedition and need the extra space for all of their gear.

What are kayaks made of? Different materials have different benefits and drawbacks and vary in terms of weight and strength.

Hardshell Kayaks

Ocean Kayak Malibu 95

Polyethylene is the most common material kayaks are now made of. Most kayaks are either rotomolded or thermoformed from polyethylene.

Rotomolding (rotational molding) is a technology that involves pouring tiny beads of polyethylene in a mold, which is then heated and slowly rotated. The material melts and covers the inside of the mold. The mold is then cooled and taken apart to reveal the finished product. Rotomolded kayaks are very sturdy but may be heavier than thermoformed models.

Thermoforming a kayak involves vacuum forming sheets of plastic over a mold. Thermoformed kayaks are lighter and stiffer than rotomolded models and fill a gap between plastic and composite kayaks.

More affordable thermoformed kayaks are usually made from polyethylene, with higher end models using impact resistant ABS plastic. Polyethylene is heavier and more flexible than ABS, but also more durable. ABS plastic may withstand impacts, but should be stored more carefully as it degrades over time.

Plastic kayaks are the most durable on the market, capable of withstanding rocks and beach landings. They can also be customized easily, adding features either in the design process or retrospectively.

Plastic kayaks are the heaviest on the market, though they do vary in weight depending on their use and size. The cheapest kayaks on the market tend to be plastic, but these do run to nearly the most expensive, too.

Inflatable Kayaks

Intex Explorer K2

Modern inflatable kayaks are popular among recreational paddlers but have made their way into kayak fishing and whitewater kayaking too. The hard-wearing PVC design can withstand bouncing off rocks and river banks. These kayaks pack down small and stow away easily, both in the trunk of your car and in the closet at home.

Thanks to the large tubes at the sides of most inflatables, they are among the most stable kayaks available. This makes them a popular choice with families who are taking to the water for the first time, as well as kayak anglers. Inflatable fishing kayaks are often made from thicker material to withstand sharp hooks and tools.

Although they may not quite be at the same level as plastic kayaks yet, inflatables are getting better each year. Drop-stitch technology means that you can inflate some to high pressures, which gives them a similar response and feel to plastic boats. Certain designs are made to track effectively and to carry speed, though they often still struggle in the wind.

Don’t miss our roundup of the best inflatable kayaks .

Fiberglass Kayaks

FIberglass kayaks were once the pinnacle of technology. Now they tend to be reserved for high-end sea kayaks and competition craft who appreciate their stiff, responsive design.

FIberglass is extremely lightweight. It might not be as light as composite materials, but it is more affordable.

Fiberglass is brittle and doesn’t take well to rough landings or impacts on rocks. Those with the skills can easily patch and repair fiberglass kayaks though, so in theory, you can keep it going forever.

Carbon Kayaks

Carbon fiber kayaks are the lightest on the market. They are also the stiffest, most responsive material available. It also comes with the highest price tag.

Carbon kayaks are popular among top-end competitors and freestyle kayakers. These kayaks rely on environments with little to no impact. They are brittle and easy to break, as well as being difficult to repair.

Skin-on-Frame Kayaks

Three wooden kayak frames

The original kayaks were designed as skin-on-frame boats. Stretching skin, or more recently a treated nylon material, over the framework for a kayak, will give you an extremely lightweight and traditional feeling kayak.

Modern skin-on-frame kayaks have gone high-tech. Some even have a folding frame, which can fit in the trunk of the car, slots together to create a rigid structure to stretch your skin over. This gives you a kayak that is easy to store and lightweight to paddle.

Wooden Kayaks

Wooden kayaks are rare and are often homemade from kits. These kayaks are beautiful pieces of engineering, though they aren’t often used practically anymore. Wooden kayaks can be lightweight and feel responsive but are damaged easily on rocks and beaches.

How is the kayak propelled? Paddle, pedal or motor?

Remember earlier when we said that kayaks are traditionally paddled with a two-bladed paddle? However, there have been some developments in recent years.

Paddle-Propelled Kayaks

A lady paddles her white kayak in the calm waters

Your paddle is your best friend on the water and the second most important piece of equipment, after your PFD. No matter how you plan to propel your kayak, you should always have a paddle with you.

Paddles come in almost as many shapes, sizes, and material, as kayaks. As with kayaks, plastic, wood, fiberglass and carbon elements of paddles come with different price tags, stiffness and response. They also have different durability.

Paddle blades come in high and low angle, depending on your preferred style of kayaking. They are also available in two, three, or four piece splits. This means that you can easily stow and store your paddle, perfect if you want to carry it as a spare.

Pedal-Powered Kayaks

Native pedal-powered kayak

Pedal-powered kayaks have come a long way in recent years. The pedal systems are now efficient and almost effortless, rather than being clunky and cumbersome to carry. Most pedal systems now fold away, too, and there are usually hand-operated rudder systems in the kayak too.

Pedal-powered kayaks are popular options for hunters, anglers, and photographers, who benefit from the ability to go hands-free.

We have an overview of the top pedal kayaks here .

Motorized Kayaks

Old Town motorized kayak

You might argue that once you attach a motor, your kayak might become a boat. If you’re loaded up for a fishing or hunting trip, though, paddling can be exhausting. If you want to conserve energy to fish, motoring your way to your favorite spot makes a lot of sense.

Many kayaks, usually fishing or hunting models, have transoms to attach your motor. These are usually at the stern and sometime the bow. There are also kayak motors which attach at the side of your boat.

Stern motors are usually the largest motors, used to move the kayak between locations. These are usually electric, but some larger kayaks can take gas powered outboard motors too.

Bow mounted motors give you precise steering and control of your kayak and are often used to get your kayak into tight fishing spots. These trolling motors are also effective for holding your kayak in position against a current while you fish.

Side mounted motors are less commonly used, but are an effective way to move your kayak. These side mounted motors let you steer your boat from the motor itself, rather than through a rudder system. If you only intend to use your motor occasionally, a side mounted motor may be more suitable.

What is the intended use of your kayak?

Now that we’ve looked at all the different factors that affect kayak design, we can get into what the different types of kayak are.

Recreational Kayaks

A girl paddles here green kayak in the calm waters

Recreational kayaking is the most popular discipline in the sport. Any kayak which doesn’t specialize in a particular style of water is classified as being recreational. These are usually capable in a range of calm waters, from rivers to lakes and even some ocean surf.

These recreational kayaks are designed for their stability and ease. They often have a balance of v-shape hulls and a keel line to keep them tracking. Recreational kayaks balance length and width to be easy to transport, comfortable to paddle, and fast enough to explore in.

Most inflatables and sit-on-tops fall into the recreational category. Recreational sit-in kayaks often have large cockpits for easy access and confidence that you will exit the kayak easily. Although they’re usually light on features, some recreational kayaks will have simple angling, white water, or touring features.

Touring Kayaks

A group of people paddle their long yellow kayaks in the bay

Touring kayaks are a step away from recreational kayaks, but probably their closest cousin. These kayaks are longer than recreational kayaks, usually between 12 and 20 feet long. These boats are built to cover the ground quickly in calm water.

Touring kayaks have a v-shape at the bow and stern of the kayak which helps them track and often have a drop-down skeg, too. Often they have a flat spot in the middle of the boat, which raises the primary stability of the kayak, so you can stop and enjoy your surroundings comfortably.

Most touring kayaks have some storage and deck lines on the top. They vary between styles as to whether they are designed for a single day or multi-day trip. The storage hatches are usually separated by bulkheads, designed to keep water from flooding the whole kayak in the event of a capsize.

Tow men paddle their long kayaks in the open sea

Sea kayaks are designed to go further and faster than touring kayaks. The v-shaped hull runs the length of the kayak which gives it a sleek waterline and top-end tracking. It also means that sea kayaks rely heavily on secondary stability, rather than primary stability.

Compared to the flat hulls of touring kayaks, sea kayaks often have a little rocker at the bow to cut through the waves and rise above the swell. Internally, these kayaks have multiple storage hatches, separated with bulkheads that keep your equipment dry in the event of a capsize. Sea kayaks also have deck lines, for storage and rescues.

Fishing Kayaks

A man with a paddle sits on a kayak, carrying several fishing rods and other accessories

If you’re going after a big catch, you need a stable platform to haul it onto. Fishing kayaks are usually long and wide, with a huge capacity for all of your equipment. Most fishing kayaks are designed so that you can stand to fish without fear of falling in, with open decks and grippy padding on the floor.

As well as relying on their capacity and size for stability, fishing kayaks often come with a variety of sport-specific features. These include rod holders, fish finder mounts and storage well, as well as specific storage for tackle boxes and crates.

If you’re heading out fo the day to fish, you need to be comfortable. Most fishing kayaks come with the most supportive framed seats on the market. Many of these are raised off the deck of the kayak, optimising your fishing position, with some models able to spin or fold away.

Fishing kayaks with all these features don’t come without the associated weight. Lifting your kayak from the roof of your car can be difficult and most anglers will use a trolley to get to the water.

Don’t miss our huge post about the best fishing kayaks .

Hunting Kayaks

Hunting kayaks are similar to fishing kayaks, but tend to be less laden with features. Hunting kayaks rely on enormous level of stability and open deck design for you to comfortably shoot from.

Unlike fishing kayaks, hunting kayaks are usually camouflaged to help you silently sneak up on your hunt. They will have large storage areas onboard, so you can store the fowl you have already shot without impacting on your stability.

We’ve reviewed some great duck-hunting kayaks here .

Whitewater Kayaks

A man paddles his red kayak in the whitewater

White water kayaks are the shortest kayaks on the market. There is a range of styles specific to styles of white water.

River running

River runner kayaks are designed for all-around use and are the most generalized style of white water kayak. These kayaks are around 7 – 9 feet long and feature flat hulls with a little rocker. They tend to have mid-range volume, designed to be a do-it-all style white water kayak.

Freestyle kayaks, or playboats, measure up to around 6 feet long. These kayaks have short and wide stature and vary in volume. Different styles of playboats are designed for different freestyle moves and have the volume in certain areas depending on their purpose.

These kayaks are at home on waves and in holes, throwing cartwheels and front loops. Their planing hulls mean they’re slow when they’re not surfing. Freestyle kayaks are not designed to paddle any long distances.

Measuring between 7 – 9 feet, with rounded hulls and huge rocker profiles, creek kayaks are built to run steep water and big drops. The rocker profile and rounded top decks let these boats resurface efficiently and carry speed out of drops and big features.

Creek boats are rounded and forgiving, with high levels of secondary stability. However, these kayaks require an active paddler to get the best out of them. They don’t tend to suit those starting out in white water and can be frustrating to learn in.

SUP Kayak Hybrids

A man paddles his turquoise-colored SUP hybrid kayak

SUP kayak crossovers are a relatively new concept, which have mainly been used for kayak angling. These wide, stable boards are fitted with optional seats and extra storage but stay as an open and stable platform to fish from.

Crossovers/Hybrids

Speaking of a crossover, there are plenty of hybrid kayaks on the market. The styles we have mentioned are the key disciplines of kayaking, but the lines have been blurred just about everywhere.

If you want a touring kayak with white water capabilities or an inflatable angler, then you’re in luck. Crossovers between most reasonable disciplines are available, but of course, you won’t find a marathon kayak that doubles as a fishing platform.

These crossovers are something of a jack of all trades, master of none. While they will let you get out in a variety of conditions, they won’t excel in them when compared to discipline-specific kayaks.

Competition Kayaks

A man paddles a long competition kayak in the open waters

Competitive kayaking has four main disciplines, three of which go all the way up to Olympic level. These competition kayaks are usually built from fiberglass or composite materials, focusing on weight saving and rigid responsiveness, over strength.

All of these kayaks are designed with specific purposes in mind. Unless you’re looking to get into these competitive disciplines, you’re not going to want these boats. They are not going to offer the relaxing experience of a recreational kayak.

A little like the running events, marathon kayaking involves covering long distances as fast as possible. These kayaks are long and lightweight, with courses often involving portaging around canal lock gates or weirs.

Marathon kayaks are no-frills, carrying no extra weight than is necessary. They are usually paddled without spray skirts so that the paddler doesn’t overheat as they push themselves.

The kayaks look similar to marathon kayaks but have a lower profile in the water. These kayaks are short-distance sprinters, built to gain top speed as quickly as possible and race to the finish line. Sprint kayaks are extremely narrow and rely almost entirely on secondary stability.

Chasing down white water, hitting gates, and making decisive moves requires a boat that can not only carry speed but be precise as it does so.

The rounded, bullet-style front end of a slalom kayak is fast over the water and punches through features. A flattened tail at the stern allows the paddler to dip the back end and make tight, pirouetting turns on the spot, before speeding off downstream.

White Water Racing

White water racers look as though someone has stuck wings onto a marathon kayak. These wings deflect water from around the back end of the kayak to increase stability and prevent unwanted capsizes.

White water racing kayaks are long and narrow, designed to get from the top to the bottom of the river as quickly as possible, without doing anything along the way. Because of their narrow build and v-shaped hull, white water racers rely almost entirely on secondary, dynamic stability.

Surfing Kayaks

A man paddles his short blue kayak in the surf

Surf kayaks have a flat hull, designed to plane on the face of a wave. These kayaks have a small amount of rocker, which prevents them from plowing through a wave while allowing the paddler to initiate a carving turn. The limited rocker profile gives surf kayaks a longer waterline so they can carry more speed.

The flat hull and sharp edges of a surf kayak mean that while they have good primary stability, the secondary stability is limited. These kayaks are built to carve at high speeds down the face of a wave, not sit comfortably on edge on flat water.

Surf Skis are a sit-on-top version of a surf kayak which unsurprisingly look a lot like a surf-board. These surf skis often have basic but connective seating, as well as thigh straps, to give you as much control as possible.

Types of kayak and their uses, a recap

Multiple kayaks of different colors lie on the dock

Before you head off to pick your perfect kayak, let’s recap all the elements that affect your choice.

The dimensions of your kayak matter for your chosen environment. Length, width, volume, weight, rocker, edges, chines, and hull shape all impact how your kayak will perform.

Deciding between a sit-on-top or sit-in kayak is one of the most important decisions to make early on. Do you want stability and easy access, or warmth and protection from waves and wind?

How many paddlers need to fit in your kayak? Solo, tandem or tandem+?

What material do you want your kayak to be made from? Inflatable, hard shelled plastic, or composite materials?

How is your kayak propelled ? Will you use a paddle, pedal or motor? What is your intended environment for your kayak? Recreational, touring, sea kayaking, fishing, hunting, white water, surfing or competition kayaks all have different elements. Crossover kayaks blur the lines between some of these disciplines.

Great value. High performance. Set up for fishing and comfort. Sold individually or as a package with life vest and paddle.

Ascend makes a number of great fishing kayaks. The one that is right for you will depend on where you fish, how you fish and your budget. Here’s a breakdown of what to look for in a fishing kayak.

Stability and Performance

Central to the performance and fishability are vessel stability and ample gear storage. The fishing kayak’s focus on stability starts with design and vessel layout. Fishing kayaks are marked by wide transoms and flared bow sections. This design means that there is more surface area of the kayak touching the water, providing a wider and more stable base.

The fishing kayak’s stable platform allows the kayaker to stand while casting and fighting fish. This not only greatly increases your casting range, but drastically expands your field of vision. Many Ascend fishing kayak models include nonskid foam deck matting that makes standing to cast more comfortable and less slippery. This stable, comfortable and nonskid platform provides a number of advantages to those who fish from an Ascend.

Keeping Your Hands Free and the Ability to Multitask

Another characteristic of the fishing kayak is the inclusion of design features that free up your hands and increase your ability to do multiple things at once. Rod holders, equipped with rod leash harnesses, allow the angler to not only pack multiple outfits, but to troll while paddling and to fish multiple lines. Many models also feature flush mounted paddle holders that keep your paddles in place while casting or rigging your lines.

Mounting Rails: Customizing Your Accessory Line Up

Accessory mounting rails situated forward of the seating area allow anglers to place fish finder screens, camera mounts, and other useful kayaking hardware. The placement of these rails and their overall function is designed specifically to make Ascend kayaks more fishable—enabling you to customize your accessory package to exactly suite your fishing style.

Gear Storage: The Ability to Bring What You Need

Fishing kayaks are also generally equipped with gear storage areas. Outfitted with flush mounted bungee cords, these gear areas can accommodate tackle boxes and dry bags. Many fishing kayaks also have cooler storage behind the seat and a dry storage compartment. Ascend makes a number of accessories design to improve kayak storage, including heavy duty crates , dry bags , and small coolers .

Tank Wells, Carrying Handles, Adjustable Seats and Other Features

Many fishing kayaks also include tank well systems that can be adjusted with scuppers. These tank wells can serve as live bait storage when full or added dry storage when closed.

Carrying handles on the bow and stern are designed to make kayak transport and loading easy. Adding a kayak cart and an adjustable kayak wall cradle can help complete your set up.

Many Ascend fishing kayak models also feature removable seats. These removable seats are included with some kayak packages and sold separately. The ability to pair your kayak with a comfortable, durable, removable seat is another perk of Ascend ownership.

Recreational Kayaks

Ascend’s lineup of recreational kayaks is marked by the same quality construction and stability as its lineup of fishing kayaks. The primary difference between the fishing and recreational space lies in the number of features and accessories mounts built into fishing kayaks (that are not present in recreational models).

When shopping for a recreational kayak it is the size of the passenger and intended use that dictates which model will be the right one. Many recreational kayaks are sit-in models, so be sure that you buy one that is big enough to accommodate you or whoever is likely to use it.

Fishing Kayak Review: Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS

Buyer’s Guide | Kayak Angler

T he Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS is a sit-on-top fishing kayak popular with anglers who want to get on the water without the price tag attached to many of today’s more elaborate fishing kayaks. The low cost and ease of use of the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 help this beginner-friendly fishing kayak make sport fishing accessible to everyone.

Sun Dolphin is a Michigan-based kayak brand manufactured in the United States. It is the largest kayak manufacturer in the world by production volume. Sun Dolphin kayaks are so widely available across North America, you’d be hard pressed to find a big-box department store, hardware store or outdoor chain that doesn’t carry these boats. From Walmart to Tractor Supply Company, the availability and attractively low price of the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS are two major reasons for the widespread popularity of this fishing kayak.

Sit-on-top kayaks like the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS are the most common style of fishing kayaks. A traditional sit-inside kayak has a hollow hull and a cockpit opening in which the paddler sits, legs extended under the deck. A sit-on-top design has more of a flat deck, on which there is a fixed seat or molded seating area. With a sit-on-top, the paddler is not enclosed within the kayak, but rather sits on top of the open deck enjoying more freedom of movement and access to gear, but less protection from the elements or waves.

Wear A Life Jacket

  • Everyone, even strong swimmers, needs to wear a life jacket at all times when on the water. It is extremely difficult to put a life jacket on once you fall into the water. Even a light wind can blow any paddlecraft away from you, faster than you can swim.
  • Always wear a USCG-approved Level 70 or Type III life jacket designed for paddling.

Anglers value the open deck of a sit-on-top since it provides more accessible storage and mounting options for rods, tackle, fishing crates and other accessories. A sit-on-top kayak also allows anglers mobility on their craft. They can reach gear, cast, throw a leg over the side and, on the most stable sit-on-top models, even stand. A sit-on-top like the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 ft fishing kayak is also easier to climb on and off compared to sliding into a sit-inside kayak.

The Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS fishing kayak’s user-friendly design, along with its low price point and widespread availability at major retailers across North America, have given this boat a large following within the angling community. Read on for a full Journey 12 SS review to learn more about this popular fishing kayak.

On the water with Sun Dolphin’s Journey 12

Sun Dolphin Journey 12 Specs Length: 12’0” / 3.64 m Width: 30.75” / 78 cm Weight: 48 lbs / 22 kg Capacity: 395 lbs / 179 kg MSRP: $499 USD / $667 CAD

Performance

One of the most valued characteristics of any fishing kayak is stability. After all, anglers need to be able to concentrate on landing fish without worrying that they’re the one who’s going to be released into the water. Some users of the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 ft fishing kayak report a “tippy” feel to the boat.

Think of a kayak as having two types of stability: how it feels when sitting flat on the water (known as “initial stability”), and how the kayak feels when tilted side-to-side (known as “secondary stability”). Secondary stability is most important in rough water, allowing a kayak to rock with waves passing underneath rather than capsizing.

Kayaks with a wide, flat hull generally have good initial stability, but are less balanced when tilted on edge.

Kayak’s with a rounded or V-shaped hull and rounded transition from the bottom of the kayak to the sidewall generally have better secondary stability, but may feel tippy when sitting flat on calm water.

With its rounded hull profile, the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 favors good secondary stability rather than rock-solid initial stability. At 30.75 inches wide, it’s also a bit narrow compared to other fishing kayaks in its class, which may explain why users initially feel the kayak is “tippy.”

The sensation of a kayak tending to tip toward a side feels odd at first. If you find the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS feels unstable, try relaxing your lower body and letting the kayak sit how it wants to in the water. After a few outings, if you still feel uncomfortable, you may want to try a fishing kayak with a wider and flatter hull.

What a narrower, sleeker kayak like the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS trades off in stability, it makes up for in speed. A basic rule for kayak speed is that longer and narrower hulls are faster than shorter or wider hulls. At 12 feet long and just over 30 inches wide, the Journey 12 SS is quicker than many recreational fishing kayaks in its class.

Market and demographics

The Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS is an entry-level sit-on-top kayak and falls within the category of recreational fishing kayaks.

What makes the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 an entry-level kayak? The price point for one. The Journey 12 retails for $499 USD, this is at the very low end of the fishing kayak price scale. Sun Dolphin achieves this low price by keeping outfitting and features bare-bones, another reason this kayak rates as entry-level in a feature-hungry fishing market.

Recreational kayaks like the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 are best suited for paddling and fishing sheltered lakes and bays, as well as slow-moving rivers.

About the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS

Design features and details.

As mentioned earlier, the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS is a sit-on-top kayak. This means the seating area and gear storage areas are molded into the deck of the kayak. This is in contrast to a sit-inside kayak design, where you slide your lower body into the enclosed or partially-enclosed cockpit of the kayak. The sit-on-top design allows more freedom of movement, easier entry and exit and better access to gear, but less protection from the elements or splashing waves.

The Sun Dolphin Journey 12 has a pronounced V-shaped bow—like a sailboat or ship—that helps it cut through waves and deflect spray in choppy conditions. Combined with its high sides, this makes the Journey 12 a fairly dry ride on the sheltered waterways where it’s intended to be used.

A word of caution, however: Sun Dolphin doesn’t include scuppers on the Journey 12 SS. What’s a scupper, you ask? Scuppers are the drain holes commonly found under your legs and seat within the cockpit and tankwell of sit-on-top kayaks. Any water splashing into the kayak drains out through the holes. Some water can also enter through the holes. In calm conditions, water lapping up the scuppers can be unwanted. To avoid this, paddlers often use scupper plugs until water needs to be drained.

Without scuppers, the inevitable reality is that splashing waves, boat wakes, rain or paddle drips will enter the cockpit and have no means to escape. Because the seat is the lowest point within the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS, you can expect to find yourself sitting in a puddle.

A large kayak sponge is the easiest way to remove small amounts of water. But, should a large wave or hauling in a trophy lunker swamp the cockpit with water, a kayak bilge pump is useful to have handy. Fortunately, water in the boat is more of an inconvenience than a safety concern; unlike many sit-inside recreational kayaks, the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 sit-on-top will remain floating and able to paddle even if swamped.

Carry A Waterproof VHF Radio, Use Your Phone Only As A Backup

  • A handheld VHF marine band radio allows you to communicate with the Coast Guard and other boat traffic. Use Channel 16 only for hailing and emergencies. The radio should be waterproof, because it is virtually certain to get wet.
  • A cell phone, even if in a waterproof case or sealable bag, might not work, so don’t rely on it as the primary means of emergency communication.

Material and construction

Sun Dolphin kayaks are built using high density polyethylene. This type of polyethylene, also referred to as HDPE, is a common material used in manufacturing recreational kayaks because it is an inexpensive yet durable plastic. HDPE is susceptible to damage from long-term UV exposure, so Sun Dolphin uses a UV-stabilized polyethylene that slows the degradation process. It’s also recommended that you store your Journey 12 fishing kayak indoors or away from direct sunlight to ensure the best performance over time.

Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS fishing kayak accessories and outfitting

Remember, the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS is an inexpensive kayak stripped of many bells and whistles to keep the price down. However, from bow to stern, the Sun Dolphin manages to squeeze in a number of useful, angler-specific outfitting features and accessories.

Near the bow of the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 ft fishing kayak is a forward tankwell for storage. This tankwell is recessed into the deck of the kayak, and has bungee cord rigging over it to secure your gear. A small, screw-top hatch in the tankwell accesses below-deck storage for stashing items you don’t need to keep as handy. Do not assume this hatch is watertight. Any items that need to stay dry should be in a dry bag.

An appreciated outfitting feature within the cockpit are the adjustable foot braces. These sliding foot braces provide the ability to fine tune your leg position, with a greater range of adjustability than simple molded-in foot rests. Foot braces are critical to providing good support for efficient paddle strokes and paddler comfort.

The seat of the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 is basic and bare-bones compared to the luxurious frame seats available on more expensive fishing kayaks. Some users complain that the thin seat pad and simple backband on the Journey 12 bucket seat do not provide adequate cushioning or support.

Another common remark is that the low positioning of the seat limits paddler reach, making it awkward for shorter paddlers to take comfortable strokes. Keep in mind that seat outfitting is generally easily modified with a few pieces of closed-cell foam and adhesive. This may be all you need to improve comfort and fit.

The Sun Dolphin Journey 12 includes three rod holders. Two rod holders are flush-mounted into the kayak directly behind the cockpit. The third is a swiveling rod holder installed toward the front of the cockpit, between the paddler’s knees.

Most Journey owners find the forward rod holder is far enough forward it won’t cause an issue with paddle strokes. The swiveling capability can be useful to troll a line on a reverse drift along an undercut bank, or to have a rod ready for action at the first sight of tailing redfish.

Next to the cockpit is a bungee paddle holder. This is useful to stow your paddle while fishing.

The most unique feature on the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS is the removable storage pod that fits snugly in the kayak’s rear tankwell. The pod, which Sun Dolphin refers to as the P.A.C. (Portable Accessory Carrier), provides dry storage and can be easily removed if you prefer to use the open tankwell. You can even tow the P.A.C. behind the kayak if you need extra storage space.

The triangular shape of the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS front and rear tankwells accommodate smaller bags and boxes but do not fit the much-loved milk crates so many kayak anglers have come to adopt for ease of organization and transportation of tackle.

Besides the bungee paddle park, P.A.C., stern drain plug and forward rod holder, there aren’t many other Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS parts to consider. The lack of scupper holes means scupper plugs are not in any way needed.

Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS mods

The Sun Dolphin Journey 12 provides a simple, bare-bones platform that kayak anglers can modify to suit their needs and preferences. Paddlers of the Journey 12 often upgrade the seat, install accessory mounts and even trolling motors.

Sun Dolphin itself doesn’t offer much in the way of custom accessories, so any modifications are the work of paddler innovation. Fortunately, the popularity of the Journey 12 means there is a large community of anglers using this kayak and documenting their DIY modifications on YouTube and elsewhere.

A seat upgrade is one of the most common user improvements. Anglers may opt to simply replace the thin seat with thicker foam, or install an elevated folding frame seat. Premium fishing kayaks often feature an elevated, lawnchair-style frame seat for enhanced comfort and a better view into the water. Some DIY modifiers create an elevated seat in the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 by installing a thick piece of foam paired with a folding seat, such as the Cascade Mountain Tech stadium seat or the GCI Sit Backer canoe seat . Keep in mind that the higher position of a frame seat may be more comfortable, but also reduces stability. Test any DIY mods out on calm waters near shore before paddling off to more remote fishing holes.

Know The Local Hazards

  • Check navigation charts before you launch.
  • Check with those who have local knowledge of man-made and natural hazards, e.g. low-head dams; sweepers, strainers and undercuts; tides and currents; and rocks and shoals.

Another simple Sun Dolphin Journey 12 modification anglers can make is the addition of accessory tracks, such as these low profile tracks from Scotty . Accessory tracks screwed to the deck provide a place to mount removable rod holders as well as add electronics such as a fish finder, GPS or action camera. Kayak anglers can purchase mounts for different uses through brands like Scotty and RAM.

How it compares

Within the Sun Dolphin fishing kayak lineup, the Journey 12 SS is their mid-range sit-on-top. The Journey 10 is a shorter kayak with a similar design, while the Boss 12 SS is Sun Dolphin’s premium fishing kayak with a catamaran-style, stand-up fishing capable hull and higher end features like a frame seat. Sun Dolphin also produces two sit-inside fishing kayaks, the basic Excursion 10 and the larger, more deluxe Excursion 12 SS.

Sun Dolphin Journey 10 vs 12

If you are deciding between the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS and Journey 10 SS , the main differences between these two popular sit-on-top fishing kayaks are dimensions and capacity. These differences result in some subtle, and some not-so-subtle, changes to performance and who is going to enjoy these boats.

At 9’6”, the Journey 10 is over two feet shorter than the 12-foot Journey 12. A general rule for kayaks is the longer the kayak, the faster it will be. This means the Journey 10 is significantly slower with less glide than the Journey 12.

The dimensions of a kayak are also factor into its volume, which affects its buoyancy and weight capacity. The Journey 10 has a maximum capacity of 250 pounds, compared to the Journey 12’s capacity of 395 pounds. This 145-pound difference could be an important consideration for larger paddlers.

So if the Journey 10 is slower and can carry less weight, is there any reason paddlers should choose it? For one, storage and transport. The Journey 10’s shorter length makes the kayak easier to balance and swing around when carrying. Not to mention a sub-10-foot kayak can even fit in some vans, SUVs and apartments.

Length is also an important factor in the waterways you paddle. A longer kayak is harder to turn, a shorter kayak quicker to maneuver. If you are paddling tight waterways, the Journey 10 will provide more maneuverability.

For most kayak anglers the Journey 12 provides a more versatile craft, but the Journey 10 is a sound option for skinny-water anglers and smaller paddlers.

Sun Dolphin Journey 12 vs Boss 12

In comparison to the Boss 12 , the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 is lighter, more maneuverable and lower cost. The Journey 12 is geared to the kayak angler seeking a basic kayak to enter the sport at a low cost.

The Boss 12 SS has a wide, super-stable catamaran-style hull and a flat open area on the deck providing a standing platform for casting. The Boss 12 SS also features an elevated frame seat, larger tankwells that can fit fishing crates, twice as many rod holders as the Journey 12 and more options for mounting accessories. On the other hand, the Boss 12 SS also weighs 78 pounds, nearly twice as much as the Journey 12.

All around, the Boss 12 is a more comprehensive fishing kayak. If you want a stand-up capable fishing kayak, the Boss 12 SS is the obvious choice. Go with the Journey 12 SS if you want a lightweight, portable kayak that’s just as fun for recreational paddling as it is for fishing.

Sun Dolphin Journey 12 vs Perception Pescador 12

The market for comparable fishing kayaks to the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 is huge, and while shopping for a fishing kayak in this class it’s always a good idea to weigh your options. Another popular, well-reviewed fishing kayak worth checking out is the Perception Pescador 12 .

Like the Journey 12, the Pescador 12 is a 12-foot sit-on-top fishing kayak. Compared to the Journey, the Pescador has a wider, flatter hull that feels reassuringly stable in both waves and on flatwater. Other features that make the Pescador a good choice are a rear tankwell large enough to fit a fishing crate and scupper holes that keep the Pescador cockpit dry and comfortable.

The Pescador 12 is modestly more expensive at $800 USD compared to $500 USD for the Journey 12. But with a proven track record, strong user reviews and more fishing-ready features, the Perception Pescador 12 is a great choice if you can afford the upgrade. Read a full Perception Pescador 12 review here.

Where to buy

The popularity of Sun Dolphin kayaks is due in no small part to their widespread availability at most major North American retailers. You can check Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS Walmart availability as well as Tractor Supply. Other retailers who carry Sun Dolphin products include Dick’s Sporting Goods, Canadian Tire and online at Amazon.

SHALLOW DRAFT IN REAL-WORLD TERMS The W720 offers its crew to paddle easily, effectively and comfortably in water that’s too shallow for an outboard motor’s propeller to work in. Poling over long distances is not an option for most people, which is why the W720’s full paddling alternative to motorizing makes it the most practical boat for fishing in shallow water, as well as in places where aquatic vegetation and underwater structures limit the use of a motor. The full-fledged paddling option also makes it possible to launch and beach the W720 practically anywhere.

The W720 has an internal volume for storage and passengers that’s extremely large: 20.5 cubic ft (153 gallons, 580 liters). This volume does not include the space inside of the watertight Saddle, which should not be used for storage, since it is designated to serve as flotation. Practically, the W720 offers as much onboard storage space as a medium size Jon boat does. Read more about onboard storage »

W720 Flotation

The W720 saddle is a large-volume watertight compartment that provides 180 lbs (81 kg) of positive buoyancy, which works as flotation in case of capsize.

Paddling mode: The W720 is considerably faster when powered by a tandem crew or a strong paddler, and it’s pretty fast for an average solo paddler. Motorized: With a 3 HP outboard motor, the W720 can rarely exceed 10 mph. Note : Currently, no manufacturer of outboard gas motors offers a 4-cycle 3 HP  model, and the closest are 2.5 HP outboards. As for various electric motors that are presented as being equivalent in power to 3 HP gas outboard motors, they are not, to the best of our understanding. See the “Thrust, Horsepower (HP) and Kilowatts (KW)” section in this article on motorized kayaks »

W720 Construction

The W720 is assembled from two parts rotomolded from High Density Polyethylene (HDPE). These two parts are –

  • The Saddle , which is closed from all directions and watertight. These attributes makes it effective as flotation for the boat.
  • The Twinhull , which includes the two hulls, the Spray Deflector that goes around the cockpit, and a base for the Saddle part that’s dubbed the Central Platform.

The Twinhull is protected by seven molded-in plastic brackets integrated with the Saddle, plus one MDO (wood and polymer resin composite) heavy duty bracket installed behind the saddle, in a special compartment. This 3D animation video shows how the W720’s Twinhull and Saddle parts are assembled:

The saddle part is watertight, and serves as flotation. It features seven integrated (molded-in) plastic brackets (see above video) which keep the boat rigid.

Heavy Duty (HD) Wooden Saddle Bracket and Motor Mounting Plate

W720 saddle bracket and motor mounting plate support

The above video doesn’t show the MDO (composite of wood and polymer resin) W720 bracket installed behind the saddle, in a special compartment.

This additional saddle bracket reinforces the boat’s structure in the stern area, where the load created by the combined weight of a heavy passenger and an outboard motor requires it.

In addition, this bracket provides support for the W720 motor mounting plate, which is attached to it from behind by means of a pair of 5/16 bolts and a pair of screws.

W720 lite-duty mounting plate for 3 HP outboard motor

The wooden bracket and mounting plate form the motor mount for outboard motors up to 3 HP.

Thanks to the extra durability and resilience of Polyethylene, it is the polymer resin of choice for molding nearly all modern kayaks.

Our boats and kayaks are made from 100% recyclable materials

W720 Country of Origin:

Paddling kit.

Paddling Kit for Kayaking and Canoeing »  Price: $110

This kit includes a 9 ft long, 2-piece dual blade ‘Kayaking’ paddle and a pair of T-grip handles. The two halves of the XL paddle can be instantly outfitted with handles, and transformed into 2 canoe paddles. This paddling kit also complements driving the W720, since canoe paddles take less room on board than longer kayak paddles do, and you always need a paddle on board a small boat, to help with launching and beaching, going in shallow water, and just in case something goes wrong with the motor.

We do not ship this paddling kit separately from the kayak itself.

Transportation and Carrying

Car topping a W720 is easy and quick, even for one person –

Carrying a W720 can be as easy as dragging it on the ground:

Note: We ship the W720 without Nylon eyelets (tie-downs), flotation tubes,  and spray shield seen in this video. The motor mount seen in it is an old, discontinued model. We do not recommend driving or paddling the W720 in the open ocean.

Owners Reviews »

W720 – users and applications.

  • Big Guys. These users can enjoy extreme stability, a roomy cockpit, and a high saddle seat that’s considerably more comfortable and ergonomic than any other kayak seat.  Read a big guy’s review »
  • Tandem Paddlers (Touring). Typically, two paddlers looking to paddle together in a stable, comfortable, dry, and easy to paddle craft that they could car-top without problems. The W720 is a better solution compared to both canoes and regular tandem kayaks. With two average size paddlers on board, the W720 can carry some gear on board as well, or a small child, or a dog.
  • Tandem Kayak Anglers. Typically, two guys who fish out of a large size kayak or canoe. Recommended models: W720 or S4, depending on propulsion preference (paddle or motor), and type of water (e.g. flat water, bays, offshore). The W720 is a perfect tandem fishing kayak that works well with a small, lightweight outboard motor up to 3 HP, while the S4 is a high-performance motorboat that works pretty well as a tandem kayak too.
  • Solo Hunters. There is enough room on board a W720 for a large size hunter, plus plenty of hunting gear including dozens of decoys (see storage video ), a motor, and a dog or two.
  • Tandem Hunters. Typically, duck hunters and other waterfowl hunters, and their gear. Recommended models: W720, S4. The W720 works perfectly for paddling, and the S4 works perfectly for motorizing, including with a surface drive ( mud motor ).
  • Families. The W720 is suitable for a couple paddling on flat water together with two young children, and it can be outfitted with an outboard gas motor up the 3 HP.
  • Boaters. The 720 works very well as a tender (service boat) for a big boat or a yacht. The S4 works better in this capacity thanks to its bigger payload capability and seaworthiness, and the fact that you can tow it behind the boat, which is not advised for the W720.
  • Solo Kayak Anglers. The W720 is lighter and much more stable than any high-end SOT or sit-in fishing kayak out there. The S4 has a bigger load capacity, and it’s more seaworthy than all kayaks and most microskiffs.
  • Flats Fishermen. Typically, these anglers fish out of a Jon boat, a microskiff or a skiff, which is a name given to a broad range of small, shallow-draft, stable motorboats that are too heavy to car-top, and can’t be paddled effectively. The W720 is easy to car top even for one person, and unrivaled as a mobile and stable paddle craft.  More microskiff info »
  • Offshore Fishermen. The S4 is considerably more seaworthy than the W720.
  • Offshore Technical Crews. People working on offshore scientific, engineering and maintenance projects that typically involve the use of Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats (RHIB) or RIB (Rigid-Inflatable Boat).  Recommended model: S4.
  • Catamaran-Dinghy Sailors. For a 1-2 crew. Recommended model: S4.
  • Speed, Fun, and Adventure Seekers. For a 1-2 crew. Recommended model: Motorized S4.

W720 Owners Reviews »

W720 or s4.

  • W720 advantages over the S4:  Solo kayaking, solo canoeing, light tandem kayaking, light tandem canoeing, portability.
  • S4 advantages over the W720: Driving, seaworthiness, ocean, tandem motorizing, tandem fishing, stability, offshore trips, load capacity (big guys, additional passengers, heavy gear, powerful motor).
  • Shallow water – The S4 drafts a bit less than the W720, and it features a skiff stand up casting platform, but the W720 paddles better.
  • Offshore –  The S4 is much more seaworthy than the W720.
  • Motor – The S4 features a molded-in motor mount and a 1.5″ heavy-duty wooden mounting plate, while the W720 features a 3/4″ wooden mounting plate that’s attached to a wooden saddle bracket inside its cockpit. The S4 is considerably more stable and has a higher load capacity than the W720, and due to all these differences, the S4 is rated for a 6 HP motor and the W720 for a 3 HP motor.

Go with the flow and discover the beauty of Squamish through one of the many local waterways.

Its calm, gentle waters and incredible backdrop make it a great option for bird-watching, sunset viewing and family paddles.

Squamish River The Squamish River is a great spot for year-round canoeing. Useful Information

Wear your lifejacket.

Never leave shore without wearing your appropriately sized, Canadian-approved PFD and other essential life-saving gear

Take a lesson

Good instruction keeps you safe and sets a solid foundation as you progress into the more dynamic disciplines of the sport. A lesson may also be the difference between a good experience and a great one

Start out in a lake

The water is calmer, there are fewer obstacles and depending on the time of year, it's often warmer if you take an unexpected plunge into the water

Check the tides & weather

The wind is calmest in the mornings and evenings; ocean paddlers should aim to return as the tide is coming in

Bring snacks and water

Pack your treats in a dry bag

Find partners

If you are paddling on the ocean, never go alone
