VIRUS V8 CATAMARAN???

Peter, thanks for the info.

On a different topic, have you guys seen the Virus V8 Catamaran?

Check it out and tell me if anything looks familiar….and what you think about the design, the advantages and disadvantages.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XiglD6zA9b8

If you’re curious, here’s more:

http://www.virusboats.com/virus.php?langue=ang

About $60,000 and it could be your’s.

Me?? I’d use the money for some new paint and sails for my Stiletto and lots more sailing and fun in the sun.

I’d also take Peter up on his invitation to Double-dip the Sarasota regatta and a cruise in company down the coast to Boca Grande for a long weekend.

Why does time, work and $$$ always seem to be factors????

Has anyone ever tried hiking “wings” on a Stiletto 27?

I do know a guy up here in Utah who’s tried trap lines.

I’m not usre how much they add, but “hanging out” while the boat is “singing” sure is fun on a beach cat.

I’d guess on a Stiletto it would be a blast.

I also wondered about how that long spinnaker pole set up would work on the Stiletto 27. Any thoughts???

Wait…I think my annual “winteritis” is starting to relapse.

I gotta get some fun in the sun medication…. quick!

One comment on “ VIRUS V8 CATAMARAN??? ”

Replying to Tom House comments: Tom we had the owner of the v8 cat trying to sell the boat here last year and it didnt go over well.(search v8) its great to read .There are some pictures of a 27 with custom made wings in the portfolio section.I pulled my 30 out monday after we had some 60 mph days here with 14’waves and a 8′ surge on lake Erie.Heres todays wind back up to 54 knots in Buffalo with some 60 gusts in the area.Glad my boat is on the trailer with the tramp off.I added a picture of it on the trailer. http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=BUFN6

Virus Superyacht

For some of us, the word “virus” may now conjure up negative feelings. For this team of designers, though, those five letters sparked one bold superyacht concept .

“In conceiving Virus, we decided to move away from the common practice of outsourcing the exterior of the yacht to one design firm and the interior to another,” Igor Shmakov, manager of Jonacor Marine, said in a statement. “We decided to entrust the entire design to Brizo, who fully realized our vision.”

Virus Superyacht

The 108-footer sports a sturdy steel hull, a prominent pointed bow and a lightweight aluminum superstructure. To the aft, three decks cascade down toward a swim platform with enough space for a tender. Forward, meanwhile, the foredeck sports a lounge for alfresco entertaining.

Although there are no images of the interior as of yet, the designers say the living quarters offer guests maximum privacy and plenty of space to kick back and relax. Oddly, it sounds as if Virus would be a great place to isolate away from the rest of the world.

As its moniker suggests, Virus has the ability to travel (spread?) across the high seas with ease. She can be equipped with twin Scania HD V8 DI16 diesel engines that promise a top speed of 14 knots and a range of 3,000 nautical miles when traveling at a cruising speed of 12 knots. The vessel could also be fitted with a hybrid-propulsion system for the more eco-conscious seafarers or engines from other brands.

Jonacor Marine says the yacht will take approximately two years to complete and will set you back $12.4 million (€12 million). Perhaps it’s time to reclaim the word “virus.”

Spirit of Matushka – a Quad V8 catamaran for best whale cruises in Alaska

14 JULY 2021

The Spirit of Matushka, a brand-new, custom-built 87-foot high-speed catamaran, can comfortably bring 150 nature loving tourist out to sea at 28 knots cruising speed, and with excellent view of Alaskan glaciers and maritime wildlife. With four Scania V8s it is the fastest and yet the most fuel efficient vessel in Major Marine Tours’ fleet.

Scania USA’s Sales Manager, Al Alcala about the Scania Quad Power solution:

“We’ve developed this idea with boat builders and customers needing much power for their vessels. Scania’s compact design allows four staggered engines in catamarans instead of two larger and heavier ones. This quad configuration saves fuel by using only two engines when idling and gives greater redundancy in case of a single engine failure.”

Getting the name right

Matushka is Russian for mother; the boat’s name celebrates a beloved 45-year old orca matriarch that frequents Kenai Fjords National Park throughout the season. It is also the name of an island in the Alaskan Maritime National Wildlife Refuge.

Captain Nicole at Major Marine Tours was involved in the naming process:

“Coming up with the name of a new boat is a daunting task. We wanted to find a way to honour the area that this boat would call home, so we felt that the name Spirit of Matushka brought everything full circle”.

Better than expected

Building the boat, fuel economy was a top priority, and thanks to the holistic design and construction, consumption is almost the same per nautical mile through the cruising speed range of 20 to 30 knots.

Besides the fuel economy, the boat offers all passengers a smooth ride and comfort as the hull provides a cushioned effect when meeting waves.

“All American Marine helped us define our goals, design a vessel that met these, and then delivered,” says Colby Lawrence, Major Marine Tours vice president. “In fact, they under-promised and over-delivered. This new vessel is going to be a game-changer for Major Marine Tours’ and our customers.”

Innovative technology in partnership

Putting this modern sea vessel together relies on trusted partnerships. It makes up a truly cross-continental collaboration, connecting state of the art maritime technology with USA based shipbuilder, All American Marine for the semi-displacement catamaran hull; the innovative hydrofoil system, from Teknicraft Design, originates from New Zealand, just like the advanced Hamilton waterjet system. The efficient 16.4-litre V8 engines, are designed and built by Scania in Sweden. This combination is optimised for the flexible manoeuvrability and control needed to safely bring passengers into this wildlife environment.

Outstanding accessibility and view

The vessel was designed to give passengers the best viewing experience possible. The bow of the vessel is built with stadium-style standing areas. Third deck has unobstructed 360° visibility and wind blockers for outdoor seating. On first deck there is also ample viewing space outside and a fully wrap-around wheelchair accessible deck.

Tim Sandeman, Sales Manager at Cascade Engines Centre delivered the engines to All American Marine:

“The vessel was built in Bellingham, Washington, and it took a week to run the 1300 nautical miles to deliver the ship. I’ve just come back from a visit to the happy customer. Now they want a second boat just like the Spirit of Matushka, so I will have to order another four V8s from Scania right away.”

Catamaran superyacht Ultra Vires launched in South Africa

Ultra Vires , the largest yacht in the Two Oceans Marine range to date, has been launched by the South African yard.

This 25 metre catamaran is the first hull in the Open Ocean 800 range and was developed in collaboration with Du Toit Yacht Design , following in a strong tradition of multihull superyachts .

Ultra Vires was designed with watersports firmly in mind, with space on board for storing superyacht toys such as surf boards, stand-up paddleboards and kite surfing equipment. Her open and free-flowing interiors feature a monochrome decor and extensive wood panelling, as designed by Hanno de Swardt .

Accommodation is for eight guests across four en-suite cabins, while the crew quarters allow for a staff of two. Relaxation spaces include a spacious main-deck saloon, which makes the most of Ultra Vires ’ generous 11-metre beam, and two shaded cockpits, one on the main deck with its own bar, and another on the upper deck.

An aft-deck davit crane can be used to store Ultra Vires ’ 6.4 metre tender, while a smaller tender and a Jetski can be stored on the foredeck as well.

Ultra Vires is powered by a pair of 305hp Cummins QSB5.9 305MCD engines, which give this catamaran superyacht a transatlantic cruising range of around 4,500 nautical miles, even when towing a 15 metre support vessel.

Based in Cape Town, Two Oceans Marine is currently working on a second hull in the Open Ocean 800 series, which will have a smaller saloon to free up more cockpit space.
