DELTA MARINE Yachts – Operating Since 1967
Delta Marine is located in Seattle, Washington, and the Pacific Northwest. The family-run shipyard build and refits custom superyachts up to 100m in length.
The shipyard achieves the highest standards in yacht building by developing relationships with customers and pursuing a mission to perform at the highest levels.
DELTA MARINE history
Delta Marines found its start in 1967 when brothers Ivor and Jack Jones founded a shipyard on Seattle’s Duwamish River. Delta Marine’s focus was on building fishing boats capable of handling the rough seas of the Pacific Northwest.
Their success in the fishing sector led to the shipyard building luxury expedition yachts. Owners could explore all the corners of the globe, such as the Pacific Islands and Alaska.
Delta Marine was developing custom superyachts exclusively by the 1990s. They have used the elite craftsmen from their local areas and continue developing and refining their composite yacht construction technology.
The 100m yachts that Delta Marine produces today are among the most beautiful in luxury standards worldwide.
The shipyard still continues as a family-run affair with Ivor’s daughter, Michelle, as Marketing Manager for Delta Marine, her sister Trisha in accounting. Jack Jones’ son, Chris, is in the production department.
DELTA MARINE notable launches
Delta Marine’s prowess in the yacht building industry is apparent with their most notable and custom launches.
The MLR, launched in 2019, is one of these fantastic yachts. The 53m yacht features interior and exterior design from Jonathan Quinn Barnett.
The MARAMA was delivered to her owners in 2008, who proceeded to take her on a three-month exploration of Alaska and its coastline.
The voyage totaled 3200 miles. The long-range yacht was the best example of the shipyard’s ability to build comfortable expedition yachts for select clientele.
The 65.5m INVICTUS marked another achievement for Delta Marine as they delivered her in 2013. Delta Marine Group, the shipyard’s in-house design team, developed her exterior styling and engineering, with Diane Johnson Design crafting a luxury interior design.
Delta Marine continues in its pursuit of developing high-end bespoke yachts for its select clientele.
Their prowess in the luxury yacht industry is cemented by their commitment to high standards of professionalism, dedication to innovation and creativity, and the ability to translate this into stunningly crafted vessels that feature high-end design concepts and state-of-the-art technology.

Delta Marine is a successful family-run shipyard that builds and refits custom superyachts up to 328 feet (100m) in length. The company is located in Seattle’s Duwamish River, Washington, USA and was founded by brothers Jack and Ivor Jones in 1967.
The brothers initial focus for the shipyard was building sturdy fishing boats capable of handling the frequently rough waters of the Pacific Northwest. Delta Marine’s success in the fishing sector led the shipyard to build luxury expedition yachts that had the capability to take their adventurous owners north to Alaska, west to the Pacific islands, and around the world.
The Delta Marine shipyard now covers 25 acres, with nearly 300,000 square feet of covered manufacturing space in a state-of-the-art, purpose-built facility.
Luxury yacht building in advanced composites remains a Delta Marine speciality. In addition to new yacht builds, the shipyard offers yacht design and naval architecture in house, although Delta Marine are also happy to collaborate with an owner’s outside design team.
With every new yacht, Delta Marine provides the client with a dedicated point of contact with intricate knowledge of the systems and construction, who can then assist with anything from day-to-day operations to a full refit.
History of Delta Yachts
Delta Marine was originally founded in Seattle, Washington by the two brothers Jack and Ivor Jones in 1967. The location of the shipyard was, and still is, on the Duwamish River. By the 1990s, Delta Marine had begun exclusively building custom superyachts. Through the years, the shipyard has drawn on the craftsmanship of their local pool of talented artisans and have continued to develop and refine their composite yacht-construction technology. As a result, Delta Marine has launched some of the world’s largest luxury superyachts.
A turning point for Delta Marine came in 1989, when the yard delivered the 132-foot (40m) expedition motor yacht LIFE OF RILEY. Delta Marine now has a fleet of around 30 luxury superyachts to its name.
The company prides itself on housing all the marine trades on site, and sources as many American-made products and supplies as possible. Delta Marine continually updates its equipment and invests in new processes and technology in order to strive for superior manufacturing capability. The connectivity across the company’s campus also means that there is an efficient dialogue between the teams working on different projects.
Delta Marine can also handle a spectrum of refit projects. The facility now features covered refit bays and a marine Travelift capable of lifting 440 tons. In addition to refit and repair work performed in Seattle, Delta offers excellent customer service and warranty in any part of the world.
The family-operated company was built on a philosophy of solid trust and honesty; with a mission to foster lasting relationships with every customer.
The Delta collection
In 2008, Delta Marine delivered the notable 124-foot (37.6m) superyacht MARAMA to owners who took her on a three-month, 3,200-mile voyage of exploration, cruising to Alaska and along its coastline. This long-range luxury yacht proved the shipyard’s ability to build comfortable expedition motor yachts that can travel the world’s oceans safely. Full-displacement and with these long-range capabilities, her solid composite hull is based on Delta’s proven naval architecture. Her superstructure, incorporating a complex carbon-fiber mast, was styled by Setzer Design Group.
The 211-foot (64.5m) motor yacht INVICTUS followed, and was launched in 2013. INVICTUS was constructed utilizing finite element analysis and engineering techniques, and has an ice-strengthened steel hull and a composite superstructure. Delta Design Group provided her exterior styling and engineering, while Diane Johnson Design created her elegant interior. This approach enabled the designers to achieve a remarkable beam and an expansive volume. Maximizing the beauty of the outdoors was a key driver with the design of INVICTUS, the apex of which is a master stateroom that offers a 180-degree view of the ocean.
Delta Marine’s fleet of around 30 extraordinary luxury yachts all feature innovative design, advanced technology, and are constructed in composite. Ask the team at Northrop & Johnson for details of vessels currently available.

The 20 largest yachts built in the USA
With nearly 96,000 miles of coast teeming with ports and harbours, the United States has been a proud shipbuilding site for more than 250 years. In an Independence Day special, we take a look at the largest and finest yachts constructed across the pond...
Builder : Swiftships Length : 91.4m Year : 1997
Originally launched by US yard Swiftships in 1997, the 91.4-metre explorer Voyager spent the first two decades of her life as a 63-metre supply ship called Candy Trader , used for commercial works. That all changed in 2016 when she arrived at Dania Cut in Florida to start a three-year conversion into an explorer yacht. When she emerged in 2019, blinking into the East Coast sunshine, Voyager became the largest conversion superyacht ever in the US. She features a bathing platform and helipad, while her five decks host a huge crew of over 70 members.
Builder : Derecktor Shipyards Length : 85.6m Year : 2010
Launched in time for the 2010 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show from Bridgeport, Connecticut, the 85.6-metre superyacht Aquila (formerly Cakewalk ) is a full displacement, oceangoing superyacht with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. Her refit in 2016 secured her the title of the largest yacht to be refitted in the UK and gave her the added 'wow' factor of a bespoke chandelier from Czech company Preciosa, comprised of more than 850 pieces of hand-blown glass. The chandelier is a staggering 11.2 metres long, cascading through four of Aquila ’s five decks.
SS Delphine
Builder: Great Lakes Ew Length: 78.6m Year: 1921
This motor yacht was a familiar sight around Detroit and Chicago in the 1920s. Automobile manufacturing mogul Horace Dodge named SS Delphine after his daughter and designed an unusual quadruple steam expansion engine for the vessel, which gave her an impressive top speed of 15 knots. During World War II she served as the flagship of Admiral King, the Commander-in-Chief of the US Fleet. Laid up in 1962, she was bought by the Seafarers International Union for use as a headquarters ship but fell into disrepair in the early 1990s. She was later acquired by a Singapore company which planned to convert her into a mini-cruise liner for Asian waters, but this sale fell through. Happily, she was purchased by a Belgian buyer, Ineke Bruynooghe, and a thorough restoration and conversion brought both the yacht and her original steam engines back to new condition.
Builder : Trinity Yachts Length : 73.8m Year : 2013
Built to ABS class in steel and aluminium, Cocoa Bean was launched in 2011 as the largest yacht to hit the water in North America at the time. Owned by the late Ali Ghandour, her name presumably refers to one of the Ghandour Company’s best-selling confectionaries - chocolate. In 2020, she emerged from a three-year refit courtesy of Astilleros de Mallorca with her upper deck brows extended, her mast restyled and a freshly-painted red bootstripe. Twin 2,575hp Caterpillar engines give her a range of 6,000 nautical miles and a top speed of 15.5 knots.
Builder : Delta Marine Length : 73.2m Year : 2006
Built in the Pacific Northwest, Laurel has a steel hull and composite superstructure and is the fourth-largest yacht to be built in North America since the Great Depression. Her sun deck extends fore and aft of a central observation room, the forward part being a belvedere terrace and the aft offering a gym, spa pool and sunbathing. Tenders are stored on the lower deck and launched through doors to port and starboard. Another highlight is the diving room, which opens to a large bathing platform created by opening the stern door.
Builder : Delta Marine Length : 72.2m Year : 2016
Launched from Dakota Creek in September 2016, Albatross is the second-largest yacht from this American yard to date and has since only been used as a private vessel. She sports an exterior by Espen Oeino International and a Francois Zuretti interior with a volume of 2,066 GT. Equipped for exploring, she is capable of 7,400 nautical miles and is fitted with a helicopter landing pad and a large 13-metre beam tender garage. On deck, leisure highlights include an al fresco dining area accompanied by a chef station, a BBQ, oven and a raised eight-person Jacuzzi.
DSSV Pressure Drop
Builder : Tacoma Boat Building Length : 68.3m Year : 1985
The 68.3-metre DSSV Pressure Drop was described by owner and explorer Victor Vescovo as being "not a yacht, and not luxurious". Used as a support vessel for Vescovo's host of deep submersibles, the yacht was originally delivered in 1985. A full refit in 2015 courtesy of Stabbert Maritime saw DSSV Pressure Drop transformed into what it is today, able to accommodate 47 people – including 19 crew and 12 technical specialists. The yacht also features dry and wet science labs, full ocean-deep sonar and an 11.2-metre Triton 36000/2 submersible .
Builder : Bender Length : 67.1m Year : 1982
Described as a "sport utility" vessel by the yard that converted her, Global owes her rugged commercial appearance to her former life as an oil rig support vessel. Formerly known as Allure Shadow , she is half yacht and half toy carrier, offering six double guest cabins with balconies, a saloon, a dining room, a sky lounge with panoramic views opening to a forward observation deck, an eight-metre freshwater swimming pool, a cinema, a games room that also functions as a library and a full gymnasium complete with a spa. Her huge decks can carry, among other toys, a helicopter and its full logistical needs plus a large sport fishing vessel. If all that doesn't impress, Global also has the capacity to host events for 200 people.
Builder : Candies Shipbuilders Length : 67m Year : 1980
Explorer has lived many lives, starting out as Clipper Cap Haitien and later being converted to a Shadow Marine vessel. In 2011, she had a major hull extension that brought her from 51.8 metres to her current length of 67 metres. The latest refit was undertaken in order to add an additional deck dedicated to the owner’s use, which comprises the owner’s cabin, private lounge, gym and spa. Other refit work included creating a movie theatre and upgrading all the audio-visual and IT systems. Moving the helipad also allowed the creation of a new open sun deck, providing ample entertaining spaces. An elevator was also installed to serve all decks.
Blue Shadow
Builder : Campbell Length : 66.8m Year : 1994
Blue S hadow is best known through her previous owner, HRH Prince Khaled bin Sultan of Saudi Arabia. A keen oceanographer, Prince Khaled made the yacht available for scientific purposes worldwide in support of the Living Oceans Foundation. The yacht carries Golden Eye , an amphibious 10-seater Cessna 208 with Wipair floats, as well as many special-purpose tenders, and offers a range of scientific laboratories and accommodation for up to 11 visiting scientists and pilots. Blue Shadow was built in the USA by the now-defunct San Diego builder Campbell Industries to the design of Martin Francis and was refitted in 2006.
Builder : Delta Marine Length : 65.5m Year : 2013
Previously known as Project Invader , Delta Marine's Invictus is built with an ice-strengthened steel hull and a composite superstructure which was penned by Delta Design . With such a long-distance cruising range of 7,000 nautical miles and features such as a pool on the sundeck, a theatre and a gym, this boat is designed to keep its guests entertained on long-haul voyages. She was officially delivered in Seattle, Washington to a North American client, but the key is her remarkable 1,945GT volume, which leaves ample space for an innovative layout.
Builder : Palmer Johnson Length : 64m Year : 2013
Lady M is Palmer Johnson's 64-metre flagship and is the largest all-aluminium boat ever built in the United States. Her narrow profile and characterful vertical bow are shared by her much smaller SportYacht sisters, which start at around the 36-metre mark. Outstanding features include a hot tub and large open teak decks that flow into contemporary beachy interiors, courtesy of Italian design house Nuvolari Lenard . Powered by twin diesel MTU engines, Lady M boasts a transatlantic range and top speeds of 28 knots.
Builder : Halter Length : 63.4m Year : 1978
Formerly known as Fierce Contender, this vintage expedition yacht's greatest claim to fame is a stint on the popular television show Deadliest Catch, where it was used as a crabbing vessel. S uRi has since undergone a series of refits after braving the treacherous seas around Alaska's Aleutian Islands. The most substantial was in 2011 at California-based Bay Ship & Yacht Co., which saw 11 metres added to her mid-body. Benefits of this extension included a larger al fresco dining area, sunning and shade areas. A glass-enclosed guest lounge in the existing lounge was also added, which can either be closed and fully climate-controlled or opened up for the indoor-outdoor effect on balmier nights. Following a 2016 refit, this 1,355GT displacement yacht now features new timeless interior décor by Krilloff & Associates .
Builder : Delta Marine Length : 62.8m Year : 2018
Built at the Seattle shipyard in 2018, this 63-metre superyacht is allegedly owned by US billionaire Jay Alix of Alix Partners. All exterior and interior stylings were completed in-house and Satori has since remained very resolutely out of the public eye. Interior photos and amenities have not been released, with exterior photos revealing a helipad on the sundeck, a spacious swim platform and a lateral-opening tender garage and balcony.
According to BOATPro , Satori seems to be spending July 4 cruising along Savusavu Bay in Fiji.
Mia Elise II
Builder : Trinity Yachts Length : 60.4m Year : 2012
With a length of 60.4 metres and a relatively small draft of 2.4 metres, Mia Elise II is one of the largest yachts still capable of accessing shallow anchorages in the Bahamas and Caribbean. This 916GT yacht was designed by the yard’s in-house team and has a bright, airy interior owed to Patrick Knowles . The full-beam upper deck houses a sky lounge, an office, a VIP cabin and the master suite forward with a private foredeck, meaning that owners can enjoy unimpeded, secluded ocean views. Mia Elise II accommodates a total of 13 guests in a master, a VIP and five double cabins including four on the lower deck.
Builder : Trinity Yachts Length : 59.7m Year : 2009
The first Trinity yacht designed by the Bannenberg and Rowell studio, Bacarella began life at 55 metres and was extended to her current length mid-build. She features four very large guest cabins on her lower deck and a full-beam main deck master with a large his-and-hers en suite forward. Her 1,052GT volume gives Bacarella a vast interior, offset by a dramatic interior palette of unusual materials and pale colours. Notably, Bacarella suffered some damage in 2017 after a helicopter crashed into her off the coast of Bergen, Norway. She was refitted most recently in 2020.
Grand Rusalina
Builder : Trinity Yachts Length : 59.6m Year : 2006
Damaged by fire during her construction in 2002 and subsequently rebuilt in Brisbane, Australia, Grand Rusalina (ex- Ulysses ) is a solidly-constructed explorer-type yacht capable of traversing the world’s oceans with ease and in the greatest of comfort. She can accommodate 14 guests and now has a range of 6,000 nautical miles, allegedly boasting upwards of 8,000 in her heyday. This self-sufficient superyacht is MCA compliant and able to stow a vast array of equipment, including several tenders, jet skis, an inflatable dock and pool and a helipad.
Builder : Palmer Johnson Length : 59.4m Year : 1998
Pearl is the largest yacht to emerge from the Wisconsin-based shipyard and has since sailed under multiple owners (and names). She was launched as La Baronessa for a Singaporean owner and was renamed Frequency when acquired by a Turkish businessman with an interest in cell phones. She later became Shubra II and was again renamed, this time becoming Pearl . Naval architecture is by New York-based Sparkman & Stephens , while her styling and interior design are by Italian design house Nuvolari Lenard .
Builder : Trinity Yachts Length : 58.8m Year : 2016
Launched in 2016, the 58.8-metre Imagine is hull number T062 in the Gulfport-based yard's impressive fleet. The exterior styling for this tri-deck motor yacht was created by long-time collaborator Geoff Van Aller , with both the hull and superstructure built from aluminium to AB classification. Power comes from a pair of 3,386hp Caterpillar engines and her total interior volume is believed to be in excess of 800GT. The yacht also has a bonus cabin that doubles as a massage room – imagine that.
Builder : C. Welding Length : 58.3m Year : 1950
This 58.3-metre motor yacht was built for American shipping and real estate tycoon Daniel K. Ludwig under the name Argo . Designed by John H. Wells , Hasabi II is a hardy vessel, with a maximum range of 5,300 nautical miles and exterior stylings that have been left relatively unchanged across her impressive 73-year tenure. She has not had a major refit since 2006. According to BOATPro , she was last sighted today at the Corfu Town Yacht Harbour in Greece.

THE BUILDER: DELTA POWERBOATS
Delta Powerboats is Scandinavia's fastest growing motorboat brand. Since 2003, Delta has been leading the charge in boat design, innovation and sustainability and consistently produces award-winning, seaworthy and extremely efficient boats with over 600 hulls delivered. Headquartered in Saaremaa, Sweden, Delta Powerboats is led by an entrepreneurial team of experienced yacht builders. As evidenced by Delta's senior designer Lars Modin, the designs and boats to follow have won many awards and appeal to a wide variety of seasoned boaters.
In 2007 they introduced the Sidewalk concept with the Delta 29 SW. An asymmetric deck arrangement that facilitates safe passages between the aft and the bow of the boat while providing increased interior space. In 2010 we challenged the status quo of the motoryacht industry with the launch of Delta 54, the first production powerboat in the world made of carbon fiber, yielding a reduction of fuel consumption and emissions with up to 40 percent in our Carbon series. The pioneering 54 ips and the flagship 88 Carbon have both been appointed winners at the MB&Y Motor Boat of the Year Awards.
THE BOAT: BUILD DIRECT WITH THE FACTORY
In the Baltic Sea just off the Estonian coast lies the lush island of Saaremaa. With its vast woodlands, limestone cliffs and sandy beaches it forms the main barrier between the Gulf of Riga and the Baltic Sea. Once the settlement of notorious pirates (also referred to as the Eastern Vikings) Saaremaa nowadays is a tranquil community with a population of approximately 30,000 inhabitants. A few miles north of the island’s southern peninsula and close to the main town Kuressaare lies the production site where Delta Powerboats are built. Founded by Lennart Alpstål as Luksusjaht AS the factory employs around 140 technicians, carpenters and workers and holds a construction capacity for boats up to 100ft. Aside from incorporating the production line of our own boats the facility also has a legacy of building sailing yachts as subcontractor for brands such as Arcona and Nautor’s Club Swan.
Delta Powerboats has produced more than 600 hulls and counting.
THE DEALER: DELTA CARBON YACHTS
In the Americas, Delta Carbon Yachts is the exclusive importer/distributor for Delta Powerboats. Established in 2014, Delta Carbon Yachts offers a product that is unmatched in style, technology and quality by any other manufacturer in the American market. Operating out of the south Florida region, but serving the entire USA, Canada, and South America market.
If you haven't seen us yet at a Florida Boat Show, then maybe you have seen us on the water. Many Delta Owners frequent the Sag Harbour area, as well as, the Bahamas. The 26 Open, 33 CE, 33 Open, 54 Carbon and the 88 Carbon have been built and sold in the US market over the last several years.
Delta Powerboats production process is certified according to the requirements of the Environmental management system (ISO 14001) and Quality systems (ISO 9001).

Seattle Dollars: Washington produces 80 percent of the country’s super yachts
Written by The New Tropic Creative Studio
As part of our #SeattleDollars series, we’re highlighting surprising stats about our city and state.
Her name is Laurel, and at 240 feet she is one of the largest custom yachts built in the United States since the early part of the last century, according to Seattle-based yacht builder Delta Marine.
About one-fifth of United States’ shipyards are located in Washington state. So it’s not too surprising that our state’s maritime industry generates more than $21.4 billion in gross business income and $4.7 billion in wages annually, according to our state Department of Commerce. What’s more surprising is that 80 percent of the country’s super luxury yachts are built here in Washington. Yes, 80 percent.
Built in 2006, Laurel can accommodate up to 14 owners and guests and 25 crew members. She boasts an outdoor jacuzzi, gorgeous sun decks and even a “verdant herbarium,” where the crew can grow fresh herbs. “This is life at the top, indeed,” reads the Delta Marine brochure .
Delta Marine is a family-owned business with a 25-acre shipyard just between Seattle and SeaTac airport on the Duwamish Waterway. It’s one of the three largest yacht builders in the state. Westport Yachts, with facilities in Westport and Port Angeles, is the largest yacht builder in North America with more than 100 recreational yachts manufactured to date. And Nordlund Boat Company is a company owned by two brothers who’ve been building custom yachts for more than 55 years in Tacoma.
“Yacht” and “superyacht” are words that mean different things to different people, says Peter Schrappen, director of government affairs for the Northwest Marine Trade Association. “There’s an old joke that you only use the word yacht twice: when you’re trying to sell a boat or go on a date with someone.” At any rate, Peter defines superyachts as any recreational vessels more than 80 feet long. He adds that superyacht owners usually spend 10 percent of the boat’s value on maintenance, fuel, crew salaries, dockage fees, insurance and more.

Delta Powerboats
The inventive spirit.
Founded by a Swedish team of experienced yachtsmen and boat builders, the Delta philosophy is rooted in a strong tradition of Scandinavian yacht design. Our journey began with a limited range of pilothouse boats built for fast, comfortable and efficient island commuting in the archipelagos of Sweden. Today the range has evolved and encompasses agile day cruisers, versatile hardtop cabin cruisers and luxury-class performance yachts made of carbon fiber. Core features found across the range are our strong and user-friendly design concepts and high build quality along with outstanding fuel efficiency and hydrodynamic performance.
In 2007 we introduced the Sidewalk concept with Delta 29 sw. An asymmetric deck arrangement that facilitates safe passages between the aft and the bow of the boat while providing increased interior space. In 2010 we challenged the status quo of the motoryacht industry whith the launch of Delta 54, the first production powerboat in the world made of carbon fiber, yielding a reduction of fuel consumption and emissions with up to 40 percent in our Carbon series. The pioneering 54 ips and the flagship 88 carbon have both been appointed winners at the MB&Y Motor Boat of the Year Awards.
The pursuit of innovative solutions, new materials and technologies allows us to continuously refine our range and make the boats even more comfortable, safe and efficient. This is made possible thanks to the 140 dedicated engineers and craftsmen employed at the Delta factory, located on the island of Saaremaa off the Estonian coast. So far, a total of 600 Delta have been built and delivered to owners all over the world.
To enable us to create the most memorable yachting experience for our customers, we do not treat customers as such. Rather, we develop a client relationship. From sea trials to final delivery, we have an ongoing dialogue and as a prospective Delta owner you are welcome to suggest improvements and adaptions to your new boat or to visit the factory while your boat is being built. In that sense all of our boats are made to order, co-created with the client, making each Delta unique and devised for her owner’s pride and pleasure.

Delta IV Heavy's final fiery liftoff sends huge rocket into retirement from Cape Canaveral
Firing up its three core boosters and RS-68A engines, the last 235-foot tall Delta IV Heavy rumbled into the record books Tuesday afternoon on a historic farewell flight from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station
The mighty rocket bolted skyward on the NROL-70 mission, delivering a secretive payload for the National Reconnaissance Office to orbit after the 12:53 p.m. EDT liftoff from United Launch Alliance's Launch Complex 37.
This "blaze of glory" launch marked the Delta IV Heavy's 16th and final mission. The rockets logged flights from Florida's Space Coast and Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
"A lot of you know that the Delta IV Heavy is, of course, the most metal of all rockets — setting itself on fire before it blasts into space. But I also want to talk about its tremendous contribution to our nation, to exploration, to national security," ULA President and CEO Tory Bruno said minutes after liftoff during the company launch broadcast.
"The Delta IV Heavy still today flies missions that no other rocket can fly. Soon, Vulcan will pick up that mantle. And we're going to retire this venerable rocket that has made so much important work for our country," Bruno said.
"And I want to thank everyone who has been involved with the Delta IV Heavy. We have many employees who were here for the very first Delta IV launch who are still here now for the last Delta IV launch, to send off this great vehicle into its well-earned retirement," he said.
Cape Canaveral: Is there a launch today? Upcoming rocket launch schedule for SpaceX, ULA, NASA in Florida
Most Delta IV Heavy payloads were national security missions like NROL-70, but the triple-core rocket launched two NASA missions: the Orion crew capsule orbital test flight in 2014 and the Parker Solar Probe spacecraft in 2018.
Now, ULA is transitioning its future Florida and California missions to its next-generation Vulcan rocket, which will replace the Delta and Atlas rocket families. The first Vulcan took flight in January from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station , carrying Astrobotic's Peregrine moon lander on its inaugural certification mission.
By contrast, Tuesday's launch marked the 389th and final Delta launch.
ULA's Atlas V rocket still has numerous scheduled flights before retirement. Chief among them: the May 6 inaugural crewed launch of Boeing's Starliner capsule from Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.
This mission will send NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore up to the International Space Station.

Man connected to delta county commissioner threats.
DAGGET — A 22-year-old Dagget Township man has been linked to threats made against the Delta County Board of Commissioners, as well as other public officials in the Upper Peninsula.
According to information released by Menominee County Prosecutor Jeffery Rogg, Peter James Sand, of W5036 County Road 358 in Dagget, confessed to the threats against Delta County commissioners Dave Moyle, Bob Barron, and Bob Petersen, following his arrest Tuesday for threats made to the Menominee County Prosecutor’s Office earlier this year.
One Feb. 1, Menominee County Sheriff’s Office Det./Sgt. David Ashby was made aware that the Menominee County Prosecutor’s Office had received a voicemail overnight that stated, in part, “how could you defend Brian Helfert? You tried to give him … a plea deal … you’re going to pay the price. Just wait until I get my hands around your f–ing throat.”
A second voicemail was left on Feb. 15, that included the caller saying, “You useless piece of s–t … I’m going to beat you into a pulp, Jeff Rogg. I will Hurt you bad. … Believe me, you’re nothing but dead meat to me Jeff Rogg.”
During the investigation, a number of search warrants were executed for telecommunication companies. According to the Menominee County Sheriff’s Office, Sand took numerous measures to conceal his identity, but the calls were ultimately traced to Sand.
A search warrant was issued to search Sand’s residence Tuesday, April 9, which led to his arrest. After his arrest, Sand confessed, in detail, to making the threats against Rogg, as well as the City of Marquette’s Clerks Office and Moyle, Barron, and Petersen.
“(Menominee County Sheriff’s Office) Detectives consider those cases solved based on their work,” Rogg said in a press release.
According to a press release issued by the Menominee County Sheriff’s Office prior to Sand’s arraignment Wednesday, threats were also made to Gold Resource Corporation, formerly Aquila Resources, the company behind the proposed Back Forty Mine project in Menominee County.
The threats against the Delta County commissioners took place on Thursday, March 7, around 11 p.m. Moyle, Petersen and Barron received emails containing only the message “Resign now or you will die next week.” The sender used a virtual private network (VPN) to mask his IP address, and other information that would have made him easily identifiable.
The email came from [email protected], and the sender name included with the email was “Chuck Hicks.” It is unknown if Sand’s pseudonym was an intentional reference to the late actor and stuntman known for playing The Brow in 1990s “Dick Tracy” and whose television work included “Dallas,” “Starsky and Hutch,” “The Rockford Files,” and the 1960s “Batman” series.
All three commissioners who received the email are the subject of a recall effort that will culminate with a special election on May 7. The commissioners have speculated that the individual responsible for the threats was associated with the group responsible for the recall, the Delta County Citizens for Ethical Leadership. While it is possible that Sand sympathized with the group, he is a citizen of Menominee County, would be unable to sign petitions for the recalls or vote in the May 7 election, and is not visible in the membership list for the Delta County Citizens for Ethical Leadership Facebook page.
“I don’t know anything about him or what his beef is with me or my commission, but this is a way of life for some people,” said Moyle upon learning of the arrest. “There is no place in politics or civilized anything for people like this to be threatening people and terrorizing people. This is domestic terrorism, and they must be dealt with harshly or we’re going to lose our quality of life. People are going to be afraid to run for office.”
No charges have been announced against Sand in Delta County. He was arraigned before Judge Robert J. Jamo in the 95-A District Court of Menominee Wednesday for charges related to the threats against the Menominee County Prosecutor’s Office. Sand faces one count of False Report or Threat of Terrorism, one county of Terrorism – Using the Internet/Telecommunications to Commit, and one count of Computers – Using to Commit A Crime. Each count is punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
“Acts intended to influence or affect the conduct of government through intimidation or coercion will not be tolerated and such persons will be held accountable,” Rogg said. “I plan to recuse myself (as the nominal victim in Menominee) and due to the multi-jurisdictional nature of the alleged conduct, ask the Michigan Attorney General to prosecute these matters.”
Bond for Sand has been set at $250,000, cash or surety. Attorney Diane Kay Hougeboom was appoint to represent him.
As Jamo has a professional relationship with the Menominee County Prosecutor’s Office, he has also recused himself from the case. The Michigan State Court Administrator’s Office will assign a new judge and the probable cause conference and preliminary examination will be scheduled for a later date.

EU passes asylum and migration pact after eight years of deadlock
European parliament president says ‘history made’ with vote to pass changes, which have been criticised by NGOs
- Analysis: Pact survived objections from far right and far left
Sweeping changes to the EU’s migration laws have been passed in a knife-edge series of votes in the European parliament, with supporters of the new laws calling the move historic but NGOs saying they are a step back for human rights.
The vote on Wednesday, which is now expected to be rubber-stamped by the member states, ends eight years of deadlock over repeated efforts to tighten up border management and asylum processes in the 27-member bloc.
Champions of the laws, who had been campaigning to get the legislation passed in the face of a rise in popularity of the far right before the European parliament elections in June, seized on the move as a great victory.
They said it would fast-track asylum procedures at the EU’s border, impose tough new screening systems and return people who do not qualify for international protection to their countries.
Roberta Metsola, the European parliament president, wrote on X: “History made. We have delivered a robust legislative framework on how to deal with migration and asylum in the EU. It has been more than 10 years in the making. But we kept our word. A balance between solidarity and responsibility. This is the European way.”
However, tensions in the huge auditorium as the voting started betrayed the deeply divisive nature of the laws. Proceedings were interrupted by protesters dressed in white T-shirts in the public gallery, who shouted at MEPs: “This pact kills! Vote ‘no’!” while throwing paper planes carrying the coordinates of shipwrecks and refugees who have died at EU external borders.
The home affairs commissioner, Ylva Johansson, who shepherded the legislation through, was defiant. “I feel proud ... considering when I took office four and a half years ago, few thought we would make it,” she said.
Civil society groups, however, hit out at what Eve Geddie, Amnesty International’s head of the European institutions office and director of advocacy, called a “failure to show global leadership”.
“After years of negotiations, EU institutions are now shamefully co-signing an agreement that they know will lead to greater human suffering,” she said.
“For people escaping conflict, persecution or economic insecurity these reforms will mean less protection and a greater risk of facing human rights violations across Europe – including illegal and violent pushbacks, arbitrary detention and discriminatory policing.
Oxfam had earlier denounced the pact as a recipe for “deterrents, detention and deportation” rather than protection of human rights.
MEPs on the left and the Greens, who voted against eight of the 10 pieces of proposed legislation on the table, also criticised the bill for failing to prioritise guarantees for human rights.
Rightwing politicians had their own reasons for opposing the reforms, arguing that the new laws did not go far enough and would cause a spike in migration.
Among those that voted against parts of the asylum and migration pact were the French and Spanish far-right parties Rassemblement National and Vox, as well as the Polish nationalist populists Law & Justice, and Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz.
after newsletter promotion
They had earlier denounced the 10-part pact as a licence for people-smugglers and a blow to member states’ sovereignty.
The Belgian prime minister, Alexander De Croo, said parties who had tried to block the pact were voting for the status quo and leaving countries such as Italy, which has various far-right parties, to deal with the people smuggling crisis on its shores alone.
The new laws must now be approved by European leaders, with opposition guaranteed from Poland’s new prime minister, Donald Tusk, who has said he will not agree to new rules allowing for relocation of migrants from countries under pressure.
“We will find ways so that even if the migration pact comes into force in roughly unchanged form, we will protect Poland against the relocation mechanism,” he said, underlining his country’s argument that is already accommodating around 1m Ukrainian refugees.
Sources who worked on the legislation said every member state could opt out of the relocation of migrants with measures allowing them instead to contribute “in kind with equipment or experts such as lawyers”.
In one of the most controversial measures they will also be allowed to pay €20,000 (£17,000) a head into a fund for those people they do not accept under the solidarity measure.

Delta 389 —
After a fiery finale, the delta rocket family now belongs to history, "it is bittersweet to see the last one, but there are great things ahead.".
Stephen Clark - Apr 9, 2024 9:45 pm UTC
The final flight of United Launch Alliance's Delta IV Heavy rocket took off Tuesday from Cape Canaveral, Florida, with a classified spy satellite for the National Reconnaissance Office.
The Delta IV Heavy, one of the world's most powerful rockets, launched for the 16th and final time Tuesday. It was the 45th and last flight of a Delta IV launcher and the final rocket named Delta to ever launch, ending a string of 389 missions dating back to 1960.
United Launch Alliance (ULA) tried to launch this rocket on March 28 but aborted the countdown about four minutes prior to liftoff due to trouble with nitrogen pumps at an off-site facility at Cape Canaveral. The nitrogen is necessary for purging parts inside the Delta IV rocket before launch, reducing the risk of a fire or explosion during the countdown.
The pumps, operated by Air Liquide, are part of a network that distributes nitrogen to different launch pads at the Florida spaceport. The nitrogen network has caused problems before, most notably during the first launch campaign for NASA's Space Launch System rocket in 2022. Air Liquide did not respond to questions from Ars.
A flawless liftoff
With a solution in place, ULA gave the go-ahead for another launch attempt Tuesday. After a smooth countdown, the final Delta IV Heavy lifted off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station at 12:53 pm EDT (16:53 UTC).
Three hydrogen-fueled RS-68A engines made by Aerojet Rocketdyne flashed to life in the final seconds before launch and throttled up to produce more than 2 million pounds of thrust. The ignition sequence was accompanied by a dramatic hydrogen fireball, a hallmark of Delta IV Heavy launches, that singed the bottom of the 235-foot-tall (71.6-meter) rocket, turning a patch of its orange insulation black. Then, 12 hold-down bolts fired and freed the Delta IV Heavy for its climb into space with a top-secret payload for the US government's spy satellite agency.
Heading east from Florida's Space Coast, the Delta IV Heavy appeared to perform well in the early phases of its mission. After fading from view of ground-based cameras, the rocket's two liquid-fueled side boosters jettisoned around four minutes into the flight, a moment captured by onboard video cameras. The core stage engine increased power to fire for a couple more minutes. Nearly six minutes after liftoff, the core stage was released, and the Delta IV upper stage took over for a series of burns with its RL10 engine.
At that point, ULA cut the public video and audio feeds from the launch control center, and the mission flew into a news blackout. The final portions of rocket launches carrying National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) satellites are usually performed in secret.
In all likelihood, the Delta IV Heavy's upper stage was expected to fire its engine at least three times to place the classified NRO satellite into a circular geostationary orbit more than 22,000 miles (nearly 36,000 kilometers) over the equator. In this orbit, the spacecraft will move in lock-step with the planet's rotation, giving the NRO's newest spy satellite constant coverage over a portion of the Earth.
It will take about six hours for the rocket's upper stage to deploy its payload into this high-altitude orbit, and only then will ULA and the NRO declare the launch a success.
Eavesdropping from space
While the payload is classified, experts can glean a few insights from the circumstances of its launch. Only the largest NRO spy satellites require a launch on a Delta IV Heavy, and the payload on this mission is "almost certainly" a type of satellite known publicly as an "Advanced Orion" or "Mentor" spacecraft, according to Marco Langbroek , an expert Dutch satellite tracker.
The Advanced Orion satellites require the combination of the Delta IV Heavy rocket’s lift capability, long-duration upper stage, and huge, 65-foot-long (19.8-meter) trisector payload fairing, the largest payload enclosure of any operational rocket. In 2010, Bruce Carlson, then-director of the NRO, referred to the Advanced Orion platform as the "largest satellite in the world."
When viewed from Earth, these satellites shine with the brightness of an eighth-magnitude star, making them easily visible with small binoculars despite their distant orbits, according to Ted Molczan, a skywatcher who tracks satellite activity.
"The satellites feature a very large parabolic unfoldable mesh antenna, with estimates of the size of this antenna ranging from 20 to 100 (!) meters," Langbroek writes on his website, citing information leaked by Edward Snowden.
The purpose of these Advanced Orion satellites, each with mesh antennas that unfurl to a diameter of up to 330 feet (100 meters), is to listen in on communications and radio transmissions from US adversaries, and perhaps allies. Six previous Delta IV Heavy missions also likely launched Advanced Orion or Mentor satellites, giving the NRO a global web of listening posts parked high above the planet.
With the last Delta IV Heavy off the launch pad, ULA has achieved a goal of its corporate strategy set in motion a decade ago, when the company decided to retire the Delta IV and Atlas V rockets in favor of a new-generation rocket named Vulcan. The first Vulcan rocket successfully launched in January, so the last few months have been a time of transition for ULA, a 50-50 joint venture owned by Boeing and Lockheed Martin.
"This is such an amazing piece of technology: 23 stories tall, half a million gallons of propellant, two and a quarter million pounds of thrust, and the most metal of all rockets, setting itself on fire before it goes to space," Bruno said of the Delta IV Heavy before its final launch. "Retiring it is (key to) the future, moving to Vulcan, a less expensive, higher-performance rocket. But it’s still sad.”
"Everything that Delta has done ... is being done better on Vulcan, so this is a great evolutionary step," said Bill Cullen, ULA's launch systems director. "It is bittersweet to see the last one, but there are great things ahead."
