The hull and superstructure of the yacht are made in wood.  The yacht was delivered in August 2016 and built according to RINA class. Three layers of cross were used in hull of the yacht. The keel, wale and posts of the yacht were printed in epoxy laminate system.

Performance & Range

Built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, she offers greater on-board space and is more stable when at anchor thanks to her full-displacement hull. Powered by twin MTU engines, she comfortably cruises at 12 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 17 knots with a range of up to 5,500 nautical miles from her 275,800 litre fuel tanks at cruising speed. An advanced stabilisation system on board reduces the side-to-side roll of the yacht and promises guests exceptional comfort levels at anchor or when underway.

The master suite is spacious but could have been a bit more spacious. What do we mean? The design incorporated not one but two built-in balconies on either side of the suite and those take away some valuable space from the interior of the room. However, the balconies give the owner their own personal space to walk out on to within the comfort of their own suite. The doors can be opened and allow fresh sea breezes to enter. We have been so spoiled by making master suites full-beam that the slightest loss in square footage appears to be undesirable. Note the perforated ceiling finish even in the master suite and this continues into the main saloon.

The main saloon maximizes the most of the 9-meter space offered onbeam and with large windows and twin fold-down bulwarks on either side, there is a good view from most areas of the space. The fold-down bulwarks are just off the formal dining room and enhances the dining experience when at anchor. The decor of the space is still consistent and again the perforated ceiling is very evident here. Light, Mid and Dark tones mesh in this space very well and are offset slightly by splashes of accent colour.

The side decks onboard Aquarius are quite spacious and are further accentuated by the same fold-down bulwarks. Below showcases how much space is available when the balconies are deployed. They are finished in the same teak material to match the remainder of the side decks. Beefy railings are in place to secure the extended space and add finesse to the overall experience. One of the nice spaces onboard Aquarius is the beach club.

Yes, there is a beach club onboard this 45-meter yacht. Usually this space serves as a tender garage for the yacht's main tender but the entire space is dedicated to a stylish beach club. Even down here, the perforated ceiling trend continues definitely hammering-home the design philosophy's cohesiveness. Once Aquarius is at anchor, the beach club is opened up on three sides with two shell doors on the sides and and fold-out transom. The connection to the sea is very apparent here, you cannot get closer to the water from onboard than here. The beach club space is sufficient to host a suite of comfy relaxing sofa-style furniture and loose teak tables to rest books or a cocktail on.

The aft decks are spacious too with many areas to sit and relax. The aft bridge deck can be configured to host a tender or as seen here store two amphibious quadskis -basically a hybrid of ATV and Jetski-. Two CAT C32 1,450HP marine engines are onboard giving Aquarius a top speed of 15-knots. Fuel capacity is 33,000 LT along with fresh water storage for 8,000 LT. The 300 tonne yacht is 45-meters long, 9-meters wide and a slim draft of just 2.5-meters. Five cabins for the owner an guests are available along with four crew cabins. Aquarius: Modern classic masterpiece makes for a surprisingly sensible superyacht

Named for the sign of astrological quality, this stunning 186ft world-cruising ketch is the result of serious sailors challenging the best of the best to produce something elegant, fast and seaworthy. Rupert Holmes reports

A demanding brief for Aquarius from experienced sailors has produced a masterpiece from some of the most experienced and talented brains in the superyacht world. Within five months of handover she had already clocked up 11,000 miles.

It’s often tempting to sum up new yachts with a short phrase describing their key characteristics. The brief for Aquarius included that she should be, ‘an elegant, muscular sailing yacht with a classic profile for family enjoyment’. But that barely scratches the surface of the main requirements for this giant ketch.

The owners also wanted a yacht that would combine good seakeeping characteristics with performance, reliability and quality. Essential features included relative simplicity, robustness of systems and a contemporary interpretation of elegant, classic lines, with a clean and uncomplicated appearance.

Aquarius ’s graceful lines and timeless shape belie a rugged world cruiser configured to be self-sufficient for extended periods when voyaging well beyond the popular Med and Caribbean circuits. In addition, the yacht is welcoming for family and friends, while providing sufficient performance to compete in superyacht regattas .

Designed to perform

“The owner loves sailing, so top performance was important,” says Dykstra’s Erik Wassen, who led the design team. “Not to the level of a racing yacht, but having the feeling of sailing well and being responsive like a smaller yacht.” A further stipulation was that the boat should not be experimental. The result is a sensible superyacht interpretation of a performance yacht.

With a whopping 50ft of bow and stern overhangs, there’s far less internal volume than might be expected for a yacht of this length. Also maximum beam is less than one-sixth of the overall length. Even so, any temptation to spoil the lines by raising the black-painted freeboard to provide more space for systems was successfully resisted.

Considerable work and talent was therefore needed to fit all the requirements into the slender hull. The design team repeatedly honed the arrangements until everything would fit, including adequate space for crew accommodation and servicing of systems.

A fixed 4.8m draught keel fits with the theme of simplicity, while also freeing up the internal space that a lifting or telescopic keel would otherwise occupy. Wassen says: “If it was for optimum performance, you go to seven, eight, nine, ten metres.” The problem is that quickly stops being practical, so his aim was to: “try to get her in the same sort of harbours as the J Class yachts – you can still enter St Barth’s Bucket , for instance.”

Computational Flow Dynamics (CFD) work informed the final hull shape. “In our first hull design we noticed the centre of effort shifted when going from close-hauled to a beam reach to running,” says Wassen. “By optimising the hull shape in the CFD we could minimise that effect, giving much more equal rudder pressure on different points of sail.”

The response and feel of a smaller boat was achieved “through having an ample sail plan – the boat has lots of sail – and giving her lots of stability,” he adds.  “We kept her as light as possible, which is always difficult because of the weight of the systems and of the ballast needed to provide stability.”

Aquarius ’s skipper James Turner has been very impressed with the handling so far: “With the correct sail plan Aquarius is a delight on the helm, responsive with weight to the wheel,” he reports. “Contrary to what her length and volume might suggest, she feels lively yet forgiving, almost playful on the wheel.”

A clean and uncluttered deck layout was a key priority, but was rendered more difficult by the lack of bulwarks. The profiles of both deckhouses were kept as low as possible, while individual sails are sheeted to similar points, which concentrates deck gear in discrete locations.

Clustering several different items into a single feature also helped to achieve this goal. For example, the boxes for vents and skylights ahead of the main deckhouse also form the backrests for the cushions when this area is used for sun lounging. In addition they house discrete B&G units that provide headsail and spinnaker trimmers with the key data needed for racing.

Project manager Godfrey Cray was keen to use halyard locks to reduce the number of winches around the mast base – the final arrangement has just two winches here instead of the usual four. Attention to detail extends to the cowl vents that have a protection ring of black composite below the polished stainless steel caps so that there is no chance of lines snagging.

The large mizzen was a feature from the inception of the project and provides a powerful configuration for fast reaching and downwind sailing with the mizzen staysail set. A further advantage of this sail plan is that no compromises were needed to keep air draught below the Panamax limit.

Optimised hull shape and big sail area means Aquarius has the response and feel of a smaller yacht

Doyle Sails New Zealand was involved in the project from an early stage, which gave time to tweak the sail plan and for aerodynamic and finite element analysis work to optimise the deck layout and improve overall load predictions. Aquarius is a fast enough boat for the apparent wind to often be forward of the beam.

A 1,580m2 running asymmetric spinnaker is included in the inventory and is clearly important when racing. However, optimisation of the reaching sails was also a priority to enable Aquarius to realise her enormous potential. In addition to the main and mizzen a 460m2 mizzen staysail and 770m2 Code 0 boost the sail area to an impressive 2,200m2 when reaching.

Rondal performance furling booms are a key means of simplifying sail handling , without compromising performance. They allow control of the foot tension of the sail, while providing a very practical means of reefing and stowing the sails.

“Typically, these systems are getting more and more reliable,” says Wassen. “There are hardly any boats that are not specifying them, except for some that go all the way to more racy slab reefing systems to reduce weight aloft.”

Square-top sails were shunned because of the difficulties of handling the top batten. However, the large roach main and mizzen still require running backstays, which are handled by captive winches. “They take more space and are heavier,” says Wassen, “but the captive winches mean you always have the opportunity to ease the runners under load if you have to make an unexpected tack or gybe.”

The twin wheels are positioned far enough outboard to give good sight lines to the bow and the rig. Key sail controls are also located at each helm station to facilitate easy handling. A drawback to this, though, is that you can’t always see the function you’re adjusting.  “It’s something we don’t often do,” says Wassen, “and making it look inconspicuous and classic is difficult.”

The solution was a more modern style console with a lot of controls that are fully concealed by hinged teak covers when not in use. This enables the boat to be sailed with only three people on deck.

Key challenges

While the brief for Aquarius deliberately avoided pushing hard against the boundaries of engineering and materials technology, there were still many challenges to overcome before the owners’ vision and dream could be realised.

In particular, a huge effort was needed to fit the accommodation and systems into the low-volume hull. This involved an iterative process between four parties – naval architect, interior designer, the engineers at Royal Huisman, and the owners – to ensure systems and adequate crew quarters could be accommodated, while leaving enough space for the owner and guest accommodation to meet the brief.

Interior designer Mark Whiteley initially presented two concepts – one for a relatively dark panelled interior, the other with mahogany furniture and trim balanced by white wall spaces. After the two had been mocked up at full scale for a section of the boat, the owners chose the lighter option. Whiteley subsequently described his challenge as creating, “a light and contemporary classic feel, rather than a more sombre and historically referenced one”.

While this early decision informed the big picture, he says the finer details needed careful judgement to give the boat its unique feel. The final coat of white paint on the wall panels, for instance, was brushed by hand to provide additional character and interest. He says: “This added to the relaxed informality and chic, understated quality you might associate with a house in the Hamptons.”

The main cockpit is the primary social hub of the boat, so considerable effort was put into refining it. This extended to the folding arrangements for the tables and to the design of the additional fold-away seats that face the main U-shape seating areas.

Mahogany joinery is balanced by white trim

The owner wanted a single floor level in the deckhouse, without a higher level for the seating areas, while retaining a view through the windows when sitting down. The lower edge of the windows therefore needed to be brought down as far as possible, which in turn provides a lot of natural light. The skylights also help to flood the interior with natural light.

Two versions of the magnificent owner’s suite were mocked up full-size to ensure every aspect was optimised to the maximum extent possible. There’s ample natural light from the large oval fan light around the mizzen mast, plus four port lights.

The bed is positioned to give a view towards the stairs to the private aft deckhouse, which opens onto its own cockpit. Attention to detail extends to secure stowage for water carafes and personal items.

Guest accommodation includes two double suites, plus a further flexible cabin that’s primarily configured as a twin. Two extra berths can be provided here to accommodate a larger number of children, via a Pullman on the inboard side and a recessed bed that drops down from the deckhead on the outboard side. A great deal of effort was expended to ensure there is no evidence of these extra beds when the cabin is in its normal mode.

There’s also a fully equipped gym, plus a lower saloon, with a huge cinema screen and top end concealed sound system. Quarters for up to 10 crew are provided in five cabins forward. This area has its own access from the foredeck, while guest areas can also be reached from the galley.

What does Whitely like most about the accommodation? “The relaxed feel and the balance between the classic and the contemporary, it really works. I also like the owner’s suite a lot: it’s a fantastic living space.”

Aquarius is the latest addition to a very distinguished lineage of modern classics produced in the past decade by a collaboration between Dykstra and Royal Huisman, including Kamixitha , Meteor and Pumula .

It’s a stunningly successful partnership that, with Aquarius , has produced another beautiful new superyacht that combines the ultimate in elegance with superlative comfort, style and performance.

AQUARIUS Yacht – Awesome $200M Superyacht

AQUARIUS yacht was built in 2016 by Feadship shipyard in Aalsmeer, Netherlands.

With her length of 92 m (302 ft), AQUARIUS is ranked in 73rd place on the list of longest motor yachts in the world. Currently, she sails under the flag of the Cayman Islands .

The interior of AQUARIUS was designed by Dutch design firm Sinot Exclusive Yacht Design based in Amsterdam.

The yacht offers a spacious living area, a cinema, a beautiful spa, a gym with incredible sea views, and a sizeable beach club.

The elevator allows guests to move more seamlessly from deck to deck. The master suite features a spacious dressing room as well as a his-and-hers bathroom.

The other six luxuriously designed VIP cabins can accommodate an additional twelve guests.

A crew of up to 30 members takes care of the guests’ well-being while they are on board the luxury yacht.

With a beam of 13.50 meters (44.3 ft), a length of 92 meters (302 ft), and a draft of 4 meters (13.1 ft), AQUARIUS has a weight of almost 2,900 gross tons.

Her immense superstructure is made of aluminum, and her decks are constructed in classic teak.

The two MTU M63L diesel engines each produce 3,000 hp and allow her to reach top speeds of 17 knots.

Her fuel tank holds 275,800 liters of diesel and, at a cruising speed of 12 knots, her total reach lies close to 5,500 nautical miles. 

Like her interior, the exterior of the AQUARIUS yacht was also designed by the Dutch design firm Sinot Exclusive Yacht Design.

She has a helipad on the foredeck, a hot tub on the upper sundeck, and a large pool on the aft deck.

She also carries two tenders and plenty of water toys for guests to enjoy. In addition to a large swim platform, the crew can also set up various water slides if required.

Of course, the luxury yacht has a variety of jet skis, kayaks, snorkeling equipment, and water skis on board. 

The purchase price of the AQUARIUS yacht was US $200 million, and she is currently also available for charter for US $1.5 million per week.

In winter, she is mostly underway in the Caribbean, and in the summer months in the Mediterranean.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Broken Hill Willyama High School to be demolished and rebuilt following discovery of mould infestation

A public high school in Broken Hill will be torn down and completely rebuilt after a severe mould infestation, possibly spread through the air conditioning system, was discovered by a staff member in January. 

An independent hygienist report released on Tuesday said the mould issue at Willyama High School in Far West NSW was so extreme, the building would have to be stripped down to its bricks to be safe again. 

Scott Warren from School Infrastructure NSW said even then, the recurrence of mould growth would still be "likely".

"Looking at the degree of remediation that would be required… a decision was made that the school will be demolished and rebuilt," he said. 

Human pathogens which can cause disease, including Aspergillus and Penicillium, were also found in the building. 

It has been categorised as a stage three mould infestation, which is the most severe. 

Combination of carpet cleaning, air conditioning vents and wet weather to blame 

The report found routine carpet cleaning and a lack of natural ventilation were likely causes of the outbreak. 

The air conditioning system was turned on by a staff member a few days after the carpets were cleaned at the end of last year. 

"An increase in moisture from wet carpets and mechanical HVAC (air conditioning system being) operational, coupled with the lack of natural ventilation' following routine carpet cleaning...[created moisture inside the building]" the report said. 

A number of large storms and considerable rainfall in the area also contributed. 

Broken Hill received four times its mean rainfall in January over just six days. 

The infestation likely started in a ground floor music room and spread throughout the building through the air conditioning vents.

Lead paint and asbestos was also found during the mould inspection. 

The report was critical of 'overcrowding and inadequate storage facilities' in the school, which did not allow for routine cleaning. 

'[This allowed] organic debris to accumulate and thereby provide a potential growing medium," it said. 

NSW Education 'not considering' merging two schools

The NSW Education Department maintained it was not considering merging Willyama High and Broken Hill's other local school, Broken Hill High. 

From term two, all students will be based at a temporary school made of demountables at Broken Hill High. 

Consultation with staff and students will begin by the end of the first term. 

Minister for Education and Early Learning Prue Car assured staff and students the NSW government was committed to a full rebuild. 

"While today's news is not ideal, I want to assure the people of Broken Hill that we will be with you for as long as it takes to rebuild this school," she said. 

Broken Hill mayor Tom Kennedy said it was a relief to finally have clarity. 

"The town can now move forward knowing that we're likely to continue to have two schools, which is really important to the future of the city," he said. 

But he warned the government would need to remain open to change if the temporary school on the Broken Hill High site does not work for the community. 

"People also need to consider the demountables are on the Broken Hill site, which means the education outcomes for the Broken Hill site is also greatly affected, by having an additional 600 odd students," he said. 

Mr Kennedy said the council was hoping the re-build would take about two-and-a-half years. 

"We're no where near the position where we will be looking at planning at this stage, so you've still got a fair bit of time before you get to that stage," he said. 

Mr Warren said authorities were "moving as quickly as is responsible" to start the re-build. 

"This needs to occur as quickly as it can, but it's at least a couple of years [away],' he said.

How does an “A” CinemaScore and 4 1/2 star PostTrak movie with a major star and a dog underdeliver at the box office?

The adventure sports-charged, doggie-with-a-heart title Arthur the King from Lionsgate had no chance of winning a crown this weekend with an $8M-$10M projection. However, many expected this well-received movie to come at the top of expectations. It did not with a $7.5M opening.

True, stars need to have a come-to-Jesus with themselves when making streaming movies in conjunction with theatrical titles: Do you water down your marquee image by making yourself available for free at home? Wahlberg’s action title, The Family Plan, was AppleTV+’s most-watched movie ever, reportedly .

To paraphrase/quote Sidney Poitier’s advice to Denzel Washington , “If they see you for free all week, they won’t pay to see you on the weekend.” Hollywood stars should get tattoos of that.

However, dog movies are a business on the big screen — and still are, going all the way back to Rin Tin Tin, Benji, and Old Yeller. This despite various genres (i.e. comedies, rom-coms, middle budget movies, which Arthur the King is) being gobbled up by streaming, thus conditioning audiences to stay home and avoid theaters.

Case in point: A recent doggie feature success is MGM’s Channing Tatum movie, Dog, which was made for $15M, opened to $14.9M and legged its way to $61M stateside, $84.8M global. A definite bow-wow post-pandemic in 2022, at a time when audiences were slowly coming back to cinemas. In fact, Dog was seen as one of the catalysts that brought women back to cinemas, the audience being one of the most jittery to return post-Covid ( Dog pulled in 54% women, 73% over 25).

Arthur the King, which was co-financed by Entertainment One (eOne) pre-sales and Tucker Tooley Entertainment, had a cool adventure bike racing element to it. Lionsgate in trailers clearly sold it on the big screen of that. So what gives? Why did Arthur the King fall apart?

Sources close to the studio assert profit, which is so not the victory lap to take on an “A” CinemaScore movie that fell short at the box office. Lionsgate only had a P&A commitment on Arthur the King , with an ad budget north of $20M+ and no minimum guarantee. That’s a very low threshold for them, a feasible one to cash cow off of. As we mentioned a few weeks ago, the streaming-rattled theatrical marketplace for studios has become about bare minimum P&As to get titles over the hump of theatrical into home entertainment, where the real money is. Theatrical on these mid-budgeted titles has become an advertising mechanism for home sales. Arthur the King is on a 31-day theatrical window (not 17-day).

Lionsgate, in its marketing, chiefly went after male sports audiences, not family or faith-based (Wahlberg himself can pull in a quotient of that crowd), and that’s where this movie is coming up short on its gross, I’m told. It didn’t get the typical Saturday matinee family bump.

The choice by the studio not to double down on family audiences stemmed from the fact that the movie centers around a troubled, haggard dog, not a cute one. However, the Belgian malinois in Dog wasn’t the prettiest Hollywood star, and he also played opposite a beefcake with abs and guns. Together, they did business. Yesterday’s grosses for Arthur the King at $2.8M were down -6% against $3M Friday (which included $825K in previews from Thursday and Monday secret screenings).

“This is a movie like Boys in the Boat which could have played to the middle of the country,” says one box office source. Also missing from Arthur the King ‘s grosses is Canada. The movie was sold exclusively to Prime Video there, and the pic will debut on the streamer at a later date.

West and South were the best regions for Arthur the King. However, Northeast was weak, and I’m told that’s because spring break wasn’t in full force there. To date, in March, this weekend showed the most K-12 schools off (28%), as well as colleges (40%), more than Dune: Part Two ‘s opening weekend.

Interestingly enough, Harkins theaters and Phoenix overperformed wildly on Arthur the King. The movie played well in the chain’s Monday Secret screening series, while Phoenix had a rainy cold front over the weekend, which sent moviegoers into theaters. In addition, the circuit over-indexes on dog-themed and Wahlberg films. They boasted a nearly 3% share on Tatum’s Dog .  

But there’s more on Arthur the King. Despite Lionsgate targeting the sole sports demo, the movie was always a bit of a feathered fish. The real cost of the movie before presales, I’m told, was $40M. That was too big a price of a movie for this conceit. It’s one of the reasons why Paramount pushed away from the title , in addition to the movie not being a prime vehicle for Wahlberg’s crowd, who savor him in action roles.

Arthur the King , on paper, was akin to the TV reality show Amazing Race, with low stakes (how suspenseful is stopping the race?). Also, for rival movie marketing execs in its sports angle, the movie wasn’t an exact slam dunk with family audiences.

Some sources also believe this weekend wasn’t the right weekend for Arthur the King, that it would have fared better at Easter or later. That is, if Lionsgate chose to lean into faith-based and family. There’s nothing for families over Easter weekend outside of fanboy-skewing Godzilla x King: The New Empire. In addition, currently, there is a slew of faith-based titles in the market, including Ordinary Angels, Cabrini and the Chosen episodes.

Lionsgate recently underdelivered on another A+ movie, Ordinary Angels, which opened to $6.1M. We’ve seen their Kingdom Story fare do much better with the faith-based. The studio is very frugal when it comes to marketing, reportedly underspending by $40M by average studio P&A standards to get John Wick: Chapter 4 to its record franchise domestic opening of $73.8M.

Reportedly, Lionsgate’s Plane ($32.1M domestic, $74.5M worldwide) made $35M in profit, a great deal of cash to cover 50% of the studio’s $70M overhead. While the optics of each film at the box office may not show it (go figure), the studio prides itself on keeping a scrappy business formula of low costs and high margins.

Per sources, a $10M opening on Arthur the King would have yielded a final domestic result of $35M-$40M versus the $20M+ domestic it’s looking at now.

While studios still embrace the theatrical downstream ancillary business model post-Covid and are making the most financially in their attempts to harness streaming-distracted moviegoers, unfortunate quandaries remain for mid-sized movies and the filmmakers behind them: Will motion picture studios ever spend enough again to turn them into compelling events? Or is the audience for smaller movies, outside of horror, never returning?
