Royal Tay Yacht Club

Green club of the year finalist.

The Royal Tay Yacht Club in Scotland moved from their former clubhouse and purchased a new all electric eco-friendly clubhouse, working on reducing carbon emissions and cost-efficiency. This was a fundamental change to its operating model which had been in place for the last 68 years. These changes have been embraced by members and represent a cultural shift as well as behavioural change. The new building has underfloor heating generated by new air source heat pumps, a high standard of thermal insulation, maximising solar gain, and offers electric vehicle charging. Waste reduction, recycling, and regular beach clean-ups all take place.

The only legal part of the listing under the Planning (Listing Buildings and Conservation Areas) (Scotland) Act 1997 is the address/name of site. Addresses and building names may have changed since the date of listing – see 'About Listed Buildings' below for more information. The further details below the 'Address/Name of Site' are provided for information purposes only.

Address/Name of Site

West ferry bay, royal tay yacht club, beach club house lb25954.

There are no additional online documents for this record.

Description

James Gray and Son, joiner, Hilltown, Dundee, 1887 (E range), 1890 (W range). Single-storey, L-plan, yacht clubhouse. Brick base and chimney stack, painted corrugated iron clad, timber frame, bargeboarded gables.

S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: advanced gable to left, canted window with small coloured panes at top, timber in-filling to apex of deep bargeboarded eaves; turned finial. E range to right, set back with raised deck and veranda; door at re-entrant angle, 3 timber windows with storm shutters, timber stairs at left and right extending to raised deck of E gable.

Projecting chimney stack to rear gable.

Statement of Special Interest

The Beach Club House at West Ferry is a rare and largely unaltered example of a small purpose-built 19th century yacht club house in Scotland. The raised verandah, canted window, ornamental bargeboards and finials and firthside setting all add to its character and interest as an example of its building type. The yacht club has more recently constructed an elevated timber 'racing box' to the east of the club house.

The Royal Tay Yacht Club was established in Dundee as the Tay Corinthian Sailing Club in March 1885. It moved to these premises on the beach at West Ferry Bay, Firth of Tay in 1887. The club acquired the villa at nearby 34 Dundee Road (see separate listing) in 1955 for use as the principal clubhouse. 34 Dundee Road is situated on higher ground behind the Beach Club House and is intervisible with it.

The history of yacht clubs and sailing as a competitive sport has its origins Ireland in the mid 18th century. It gathered pace in Scotland throughout the 19th century and was flourishing by the end if it. Scotland is world renowned for its wealth and variety of coastal inlets, land and sea lochs, rivers and canals, attracting sailors of all abilities, both competitively and recreationally.

List description updated as part of the sporting buildings thematic study (2012-13).

About Listed Buildings

Historic Environment Scotland is responsible for designating sites and places at the national level. These designations are Scheduled monuments, Listed buildings, Inventory of gardens and designed landscapes and Inventory of historic battlefields.

We make recommendations to the Scottish Government about historic marine protected areas, and the Scottish Ministers decide whether to designate.

Listing is the process that identifies, designates and provides statutory protection for buildings of special architectural or historic interest as set out in the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) (Scotland) Act 1997.

We list buildings which are found to be of special architectural or historic interest using the selection guidance published in Designation Policy and Selection Guidance (2019)

Listed building records provide an indication of the special architectural or historic interest of the listed building which has been identified by its statutory address. The description and additional information provided are supplementary and have no legal weight.

These records are not definitive historical accounts or a complete description of the building(s). If part of a building is not described it does not mean it is not listed. The format of the listed building record has changed over time. Earlier records may be brief and some information will not have been recorded.

The legal part of the listing is the address/name of site which is known as the statutory address. Other than the name or address of a listed building, further details are provided for information purposes only. Historic Environment Scotland does not accept any liability for any loss or damage suffered as a consequence of inaccuracies in the information provided. Addresses and building names may have changed since the date of listing. Even if a number or name is missing from a listing address it will still be listed. Listing covers both the exterior and the interior and any object or structure fixed to the building. Listing also applies to buildings or structures not physically attached but which are part of the curtilage (or land) of the listed building as long as they were erected before 1 July 1948.

While Historic Environment Scotland is responsible for designating listed buildings, the planning authority is responsible for determining what is covered by the listing, including what is listed through curtilage. However, for listed buildings designated or for listings amended from 1 October 2015, legal exclusions to the listing may apply.

If part of a building is not listed, it will say that it is excluded in the statutory address and in the statement of special interest in the listed building record. The statement will use the word 'excluding' and quote the relevant section of the 1997 Act. Some earlier listed building records may use the word 'excluding', but if the Act is not quoted, the record has not been revised to reflect subsequent legislation.

Listed building consent is required for changes to a listed building which affect its character as a building of special architectural or historic interest. The relevant planning authority is the point of contact for applications for listed building consent.

Find out more about listing and our other designations at www.historicenvironment.scot/advice-and-support . You can contact us on 0131 668 8914 or at [email protected] .

Coasting Around

The latest craze to hit Scottish waters is coastal rowing – and there’s no ambiguity about its nature. It does exactly what it says on the tin!

The Scottish Coastal Rowing Association was formed in 2010 in the Scottish Fisheries Museum, Anstruther. Thus, the St Ayles Rowing Club was formed as part of a community project to bring together men and women of all ages – from 18 to 80 – with the aim of getting fit, getting to know folk and having a bit of fun along the way.

A crew consists of four rowers with an oar each, with a cox to ensure correct timing is kept and that all on board are safe.

Since then, the sport of boat-building and coastal rowing has grown in popularity and now there are 100 St Ayles skiffs in action around Scotland’s shores with another 100 in various stages of completion. One of the most recent clubs to be formed is Broughty Ferry Boating, a new section of the Royal Tay Yacht Club, who recently launched their own skiff.

With that, Sam Miller’s love of rowing of was re-kindled, as were memories of her days spent in Dunbar. “I first heard of coastal rowing or St Ayles skiffs when I lived in Dunbar, East Lothian,” she says.

“They built a skiff a few years ago but it was something I never had an opportunity to try or get into due to my commuting! I would see the skiffs row out of the harbour every Sunday at 12noon, same time as coastguard training sessions, and always thought to myself, ‘I’d love to give that ago’! But I never did. Well, not in Dunbar.”

The chance to rectify this came when Sam and her husband moved to Broughty Ferry. Soon after joining the Royal Tay Yacht Club, they were informed that a St Ayles kit had been bought and volunteers were needed to build it.

“We both volunteered, although I was more involved in the organising and operational side of things!” says Sam.

It took around 800 hours to piece together the Brochty, which was launched in brilliant sunshine in August. Plans to build a second boat are afoot and it’s hoped work will start in the next couple of months.

Not only did this venture raise the profile of rowing, it also revived the dying art of traditional boat manufacture and gave Broughty Ferry twins Ralph and John Knowles (67) the chance to show their skills. They have been at the helm of the community project that saw a flatpack of plywood and larch turn into the Brochty.

“I was not a newcomer to water as I sailed as a child,” continues Sam, “but my husband, had no previous boating experience but that’s certainly not stopped us. As soon as I got in the skiff and started rowing, I loved it. It felt so natural and very calming – even though the weather was not in our favour!

“My family say that rowing has taken over our lives and it probably has. It’s so addictive – you just want to keep going out again and again.

“Anyone who looks at the boat and thinks ‘I couldn’t do that’ should think again. Give it a go – you’ll be surprised just how capable you are.”

The Royal Tay Yacht Club

The first Squib appeared at the Royal Tay Yacht Club in 1971 and was quickly found to be a safe, cost-effective and competitive boat, well able to cope with the River Tay’s strongest tides. A  keen Squib fleet was quickly established at the heart of the thriving club, revellling in the  delights and challenges on and off the water.

As a result there is still a popular, competitive but friendly Squib fleet at RTYC today. The Squib Class on the Tay holds three evening series in the sailing year and are regulars at club regattas and trophy races.

Russia's Nuclear Deterrent Command Center Imperiled by Winter Freeze—Report

A Russian nuclear deterrent command center in Moscow has been imperiled by power outages that have impacted more than one-quarter of the region's cities amid freezing temperatures, a Russian Telegram channel has reported.

The VChK-OGPU outlet, which purports to have inside information from Russian security forces, reported that the 820th Main Center for Missile Attack Warnings—part of the Russian Space Forces, a branch of the country's Aerospace Forces—near Solnechnogorsk in Moscow is without power.

It serves as the space forces early warning network against potential ballistic missile attacks.

The development comes as Russians are reported to be suffering from power outages in their homes in the Moscow region caused by technical issues at plants amid subzero temperatures.

On January 4, a heating main burst at the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant in the town of Podolsk, which is about 30 miles south of central Moscow. Since then, tens of thousands of Russians are reported to have no heating in their homes.

Affected areas include the cities of Khimki, Balashikha, Lobnya, Lyubertsy, Podolsk, Chekhov and Naro-Fominsk, a map published by a Russian Telegram channel and shared on other social media sites shows.

Other Russian media outlets reported that in Moscow, residents of Balashikha, Elektrostal, Solnechnogorsk, Dmitrov, Domodedovo, Troitsk, Taldom, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Krasnogorsk, Pushkino, Ramenskoye, Voskresensk, Losino-Petrovsky and Selyatino are also without power.

The Telegram channel said that at the 820th Main Center for Missile Attack Warnings, "the crew...is on duty around the clock."

"It is here that the decision on a retaliatory nuclear strike is executed," the channel said.

Newsweek could not independently verify the report and has reached out to the Russian Defense Ministry by email for comment.

Power outages have also been reported in Russia's second-largest city, St. Petersburg, in the country's western Voronezh region, in the southwest city of Volgograd, and in Rostov, which borders Ukraine, a country that Russia has been at war with since February 24, 2022.

On Sunday, two shopping malls in St. Petersburg were forced to close because of problems with light and heating, reported local news outlet 78.ru. Hundreds of other homes in the city have had no electricity, water or heating for days amid temperatures of -25 C (-13 F).

Russian authorities have also been forced to compensate passengers of a train that ran from Samara to St. Petersburg (a 20-hour journey) without heating during -30 C (-22 F) temperatures. Videos circulating on social media showed carriage windows frozen over. A passenger also said the toilet didn't work during the trip because of frozen pipes.
