UP THE CREEK – The Shoreham Raft Race
It’s almost time for UP THE CREEK The Shoreham Raft Race!
The Raft Race is the flagship race and a team event for a minimum of four people and a maximum of eight. You will need to build your own raft and source your own materials and submit to a safety check before the start of the race. Give your team a name and optional fancy dress for extra prizes.
The Race will start at 2.00 pm at Sussex Yacht Club following a route across the River Adur and back to finish in front of Coronation Green.
Entry to the race is £10 per person.
On Saturday 16th July the River Adur will be inundated with wacky contraptions and innovative floatation devices battling it out to reach the finish line – or even just stay afloat! We are also running a Bridge-to-Bridge fun SUP Race for paddleboarders to participate in, along with SUP taster sessions.
The proceeds of this fantastic fundraising event will be benefitting some amazing local good causes; Friends of Herons Dale Primary School, Sussex Sailability, St Barnabas House, and Turning Tides.
You don’t need to enter the race to experience the fun! The whole community is welcome to cheer along the competitors, enjoy the entertainment from Shoreham Allstars and indulge in the food and refreshments from vendors supporting the event on Coronation Green.
It’s not too late to get involved in the action; go to www.shorehamraftrace.co.uk for all the information, along with how to enter your raft or sign up to the SUP activities.

Welcome to the home of sailing in Sussex
Share the passion
Founded in 1892, Sussex Yacht Club (SYC) is a members’ sailing club with superb modern facilities. A home to yachts and boats of all sizes, our main clubhouse, extensive boatyard and moorings are on the River Adur and our original clubhouse and locked moorings are inside Shoreham Port itself.
We are one of the most established yacht clubs in Sussex with keen racing and rallying fleets . We are home to a dinghy section where particular attention is given to youth sailors, as well as a rapidly growing Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) section and a very enthusiastic outrigger canoe club. Our dive section has its own rigid inflatable boat (RIB) , and diving takes place throughout the year.
We are also very proud to have established Sussex Sailability, a charity encouraging and supporting disabled people to start sailing, develop their skills and gain qualifications.

Man dies after falling from yacht in English Channel during historic race
It is believed the sailor, who is from the Greater Manchester area, was taking part in the Royal Escape Race, a historic yacht race from Shoreham-by-Sea to the Normandy port of Fecamp.
Saturday 27 May 2023 16:10, UK
A man has died after falling off a yacht in the English Channel.
The incident happened in waters off the northwest of France at around 2pm on Friday.
A nearby fishing vessel went to the scene to assist French rescue teams, while the UK Coastguard offered communications support.
Coastguard said the victim - who has not been identified but is from the Greater Manchester area - was taken to a hospital in the port city of Le Havre by a French helicopter.
A spokesman for Sussex Police said: "Sussex Police were made aware of a man having sadly died in the English Channel after falling from a yacht in French waters in the early hours of Saturday morning.
"The incident is understood to have happened at around 2pm on Friday.
"Police are supporting the coastguard by offering liaison with the man's family and will continue to offer support to the relevant agencies while the full circumstances of the situation are established."
It is reported another sailor from the same vessel was rescued safely by French lifeboat crews.
Yacht club 'deeply saddened'
It is believed the sailor who died was taking part in the Royal Escape Race, a historic yacht race from Shoreham-by-Sea to the Normandy port of Fecamp.
Launched in 1977 to mark the Queen's silver jubilee, it is now among the oldest offshore sailing races in the country.
In a message posted on its Facebook page, Sussex Yacht Club said: "We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of our fellow sailors yesterday.
"Sussex Yacht Club are working with the police, Maritime and Coastguard Agency and the Marine Accident Investigation Branch to assist with their enquiries.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and supporting our sailors at this difficult time."
