Since its highly acclaimed debut in 2009, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has become a leading event on the Formula 1 calendar.

Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi - Start Your Engines!

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is the last stage in the F1 World Championship this year. The Middle East's largest international motorsport event as well as the only twilight race on the Formula One calendar will have incredible betting opportunities.

The 2007 Abu Dhabi Festival in the UAE was the venue for the announcement that Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was going to be in the Formula One Calendar from 2009 onwards. The race first took place on Nov 1, 2009 and was won by Sebastian Vettel for Red Bull. The race is held on the 55 lap Yas Marina Circuit which was designed by Hermann Tilke; a prolific formula one circuit designer.

The first provisional date of the initial race was for November 15th, 2009 and was going to be the final and 19th race of the season, but later there were some amendments to the Formula One calendar that year and the date was changed to the 1st of November and only the 17th and last race in the season.

This was an exciting announcement as the race was going to be F1`s first ever day-night event with floodlights being used from the start to ensure a seamless transition from day to night!

Changes to the Circuit Happened in 2021

Saif Al Noaimi, the acting CEO of Abu Dhabi Motorsports Management, announced in June 2021 that changes to the track's layout had been approved and would be finished in time for the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Turns 4, 5, and 6 were changed to a single, less challenging hairpin, turns 11 through 14 were changed to a sweeping banked curve, and Turns 18 through 20 were loosened up to accommodate greater speed.

Fascinating fact: The Yas Marina track cost a staggering £800m and is part of a massive development aimed at bringing tourism to the United Arab Emirates. Among the attractions constructed is Ferrari World , which opened in 2010 as the world's largest indoor theme park with the world's fastest rollercoaster which can achieve top speeds of around 149 miles per hour. The marina by the track has space for more than 150 yachts and can even accommodate six 200ft-long monsters - that's the length of more than six double-decker buses.

The Government of Abu Dhabi own the circuit and Abu Dhabi MotorSports management are the operators of the Maine Circuit. The development includes a water and theme park, hotels, residential areas and beaches and covers a total of 160 hectares, approx.

The Concerts Organised For After The Race

Every year the organiser line up some Post-Race Concerts to keep the spectators entertained after the roar of the engines have stopped and they do bring in some big names every year including pop star Beyonce and rapper Stormzy to more seasoned rockers like The Who and Aerosmith to name but a few. The concert is held at the Yas Marina and the 2022 headliner for the main event on Sunday was Def Leppard.

The exact venue is the Etihard Park (previously Du Arena), located between the North Grandstand and Ferrari World and is a purpose-built venue for concerts. There are plenty food and drink options available, and doors open Fri-Sun at 6pm with the main band starting at 9pm and before that an array of local acts are in support.

Brake Trouble for Lewis and a Record Time for Vettel!

In 2009 the German Sebastian Vettel driving for Red Bull won the first Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi and also took the lap record at a super-fast time of 1:40.279 which was the record until 2019 when Lewis Hamilton broke it with a time of 1:39.283. In 2009 Lewis Hamilton had led from the start with Vettel second, but Lewis would succumb to brake trouble after 18 laps and had to retire due to safety concerns, after that Vettel would carry on in first place to win!

Max Verstappen of Red Bull won the season-ending race in Abu Dhabi by leading from the front and Charles Leclerc of Ferrari defeated Sergio Perez of Red Bull to finish second overall in the race and the championship, meaning Red Bull didn't achieve a 1-2 winning season, which would have been a first for the team.

Abu Dhabi and Dubai: The Cosmopolitan City

Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates and is located just off the mainland on a island in the Persian Gulf. It focuses on oil and boasts stunning modern skyline towers and has huge shopping centres.

This decadent restaurant is located in the fantastic surroundings of the Riviera Beach Club which may find you initially going for just a cocktail and a snack on the terrace, but end up staying there for a long and fun night out. The food is fresh and tasty, and the dishes can include the tangy red snapper and salmon ceviches, tunapica tartare or the steamed Chilean seabass; a light dish, but very satisfying, a firm favourite for us.

Coya Abu Dhabi

This lovely Peruvian restaurant is an award-winning venue with its Latin American theme and traditional Peruvian cooking it makes this a place not to be missed when in town. The food is great, but also the views of Al Maryah Island and the classy interior make it a must-see place to spend a few hours in the evening.

The restaurant fronts onto the water and you can enjoy a sumptuous pre-dinner cocktail at their classy bar while you wait for your table to ready. The sea bream and the amberjack and truffle are a must-try when you're at the Coya, but the showstopper on the menu is the Arroz Nikkei , which is a bowl of Chilean seabass roughly mashed with rice, lime and chilli; lip-smacking good and comes at a hefty but worthwhile price of (Dh192 or £41).

This five star hotel overlooks the track. All guests benefit from the hotel’s trackside roof terrace offering views of the race below and have access to the post race concerts. We also have a limited number of rooms that are track facing. A lot of celebrities,  F1 teams and drivers stay here. It also has a wide range of bars and restaurants and parties tend to take place during the Grand Prix weekend.

This four star hotel is located next to the track and close to many restaurants and bars and again hosts some of the F1 teams over the weekend. It is just ten minutes from Abu Dhabi airport.

Centro Hotel

This three star hotel is just a five minute walk to the track and has in house bars, restaurants and an outside pool. It also offers shuttles to the circuit for hotel guests.

Timeframe: When Formula One cars hit the streets of Abu Dhabi to announce first grand prix

F ormula One fans in the UAE got their first glimpse of what was to come on February 3, 2007, the day Abu Dhabi's first grand prix was unveiled.

The announcement was part of the first Abu Dhabi F1 Festival, which celebrated the launch of the UAE's addition to the F1 tour and the official announcement of the first event to be held in 2009 at Yas Marina Circuit .

Bernie Ecclestone, the top racing class’s chief operating office, took part in the announcement at Emirates Palace alongside several drivers, including Spaniard Fernando Alonso, who drove for McLaren, and Kimi Raikkonen of Finland, who drove for Ferrari.

UAE President Sheikh Mohamed, who was Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi at the time, attended the contract-signing ceremony at the luxurious hotel.

After the ceremony, Sheikh Mohamed spoke highly of bringing the motorsport to Abu Dhabi, saying: “A Formula 1 Grand Prix is one of the world's most prestigious sporting events, in the same category as an Olympic Games or World Cup, and is unrivalled in terms of continuous global resonance.

“That is why this new partnership is such an exciting one for Abu Dhabi and the entire UAE."

The display involved F1 cars driving along the capital's Corniche Road, with both sides of the road cordoned off for safety and fans kept behind railings.

The roaring sounds of the cars was heard across the city, as spectators flocked to get a close look at the highly tuned machines.

Some of the drivers chose to cap off their drive at the end of the road by doing “doughnuts”, spinning the car in circles as the wheels create a friction burn on the road to induce a smoke effect.

Fans would have to wait two years to see the cars on the Yas Marina Circuit, when the first Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was held. The track was designed by German architect and engineer Hermann Tilke, who also designed tracks including the Circuit of the Americas in Texas.

After the signing, Ecclestone said: “We are delighted to welcome Abu Dhabi into the Formula One family, and look forward to a long and successful partnership.

"Abu Dhabi's hospitality, the genuine warmth of its people, and ever-increasing number of world class facilities, will ensure that its round of the FIA Formula One World Championship is a wonderful addition to the Formula One calendar."

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has since become a permanent fixture on the F1 calendar. Fifteen races have been held on Yas Island to date, with Lewis Hamilton claiming the most wins with five.

The circuit’s most thrilling race took place on December 21, 2021, when Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen were vying for the championship. The title was decided in the final few laps, giving Verstappen his first victory, and denying Hamilton his eighth.

Before the 2021 race, F1 and Abu Dhabi extended their agreement by 10 years, ensuring the last race of the season would take place in the UAE capital until 2030.

The next F1 season is due to start on March 2 with the Bahrain Grand Prix and will feature 24 races, ending on December 8 in Abu Dhabi.

Second season of F1 Kids to broadcast seven races

Following its successful first season, F1 Kids will return in 2024 with a live feed from seven races scheduled this year, starting with this weekend's Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

The production will also cover the Monaco, British, Dutch, Singapore, Sao Paulo, and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix later in the campaign.

"F1 Kids is proving to be a brilliant way to engage children in Formula 1 in a way that’s accessible and fun for them, so I’m delighted it’s back for a second season," said Ian Holmes, Director of Media Rights and Content Creation at Formula 1.

F1 EXPLAINS: How F1 ACADEMY aims to inspire young women to pursue careers in motorsport

"We have created a new world for young fans, where they can watch the world’s best drivers race wheel-to-wheel and learn about the more technical elements of the sport in an easy format.

"This season, we will continue to develop the broadcast, ensuring we are always keeping our audience in mind and creating content that not only works for them but is brought to them by their peers."

F1 Kids will be available to broadcasters around the world via a live dedicated international feed of the Grand Prix. The feed will once again feature 3D augmented graphics, child-friendly team radio transmissions, technical explainers and a bespoke package of colourful graphics and animations, including the cartoon driver avatars and upgraded car livery designs. There will also be more to come this season as the F1 Kids international feed evolves.

A full English-language version of F1 Kids will be available with live commentary and analysis, which will be remotely provided by a group of young presenters from F1’s Media & Technology Centre in Biggin Hill, Kent. International, non-English language broadcast partners will offer commentary in their own respective local languages.
