Groupe Beneteau acquires Delphia Yachts

Groupe Beneteau has acquired the Polish shipyard Delphia Yachts.

Groupe Beneteau’s Polish subsidiary Ostroda Yachts now holds a majority 80% stake in the company, while Delphia retains 20%.

The acquisition of the yard, which specialises in producing yachts measuring between seven and 15 metres in length, was formalised on November 30. The acquisition agreement was previously set out on July 12.

Delphia Yachts will now join Groupe Beneteau’s burgeoning portfolio, which also includes superyacht yard Monte Carlo Yachts , Beneteau, Jeanneau , Lagoon and Prestige .

Chief executive Hervé Gastinel said in a statement: “To support its development on the strategic segment for outboard motorboats and small sailing yachts, Groupe Beneteau will be able to capitalize on Delphia Yachts’ industrial capacity and expertise. This acquisition is in line with our long-term strategy for sustainable and profitable growth.”

A statement from the owners of Delphia shipyard added: “As co-owners of a newly established company, we look at our joint future with happiness and optimism. We trust it will ensure a continued stable growth of both the Delphia Yachts boatyards and its sales partners, increasing further the stability of employment and allowing even greater development opportunities to its current and future employees.”

BENETEAU: A LONG STORY THAT BEGAN IN 1884 

The first BENETEAU boats sailed from the shipyards of Croix-de-Vie over 136 years ago. Delphia 11: Beneteau’s First All-Electric Boat

The Beneteau Group just launched its first all-electric boat, the 35-foot Delphia 11, designed to cruise lakes and rivers in peace and quiet, leaving no emissions behind.

Beneteau bought Delphia, a Polish builder, in 2018. It is now the first company in the sweeping Beneteau fleet to build totally electric boats. Its lineup will include seven boats from 30 to 42 feet, including the Delphia 10 series designed by British designer Tony Castro and the Dutch design firm, Vripack, last September.

The new Delphia 11 will have a single 56kW (80-hp) Torqeedo Deep Blue 50i 1400 electric motor with one or two 38kWh battery banks. It also has solar panels to feed the service batteries, and upright windshields, to deflect heat from the sun and reduce the need for air conditioning.

The Delphia 11 comes in both Salon and Flybridge models, and three different versions. The Life is for lakes; Cruise for extended inland cruising, and Rapid, which adds a single 22kW fast charger. All three use the same battery packs – the same as those in the BMW i3.

But Cruise and Rapid have two battery packs to double capacity. With those packs, the boats have a range of 43 nm, or the ability to run for 10 hours at 4.3 knots. You can charge the batteries overnight using standard 16A shore power. The rapid charger lets the batteries charge from 40 to 80 percent in three hours.

The boats have a full-displacement hull, with an upright stem and then a large flare forward, to increase interior volume. They also have oversized rubber rub rails along the sides. And there are lounge areas forward and aft, with an outside wet bar and grill with a large prep area aft.

The lower accommodations deck can house one cabin and one head, or two cabins and one head, or three cabins and two heads. The Sedan model has an air draft of just 9 feet, so it can slide under a lot of bridges on the waterways of Europe.

You can also order the boat with a Yanmar diesel, from 57- to 150-hp.

With Delphia committed to building only electric boats by 2024 its Delphia 11 Sedan is its first step towards a greener future. Jack Haines heads to the Netherlands for a back-to-back test with its diesel counterpart...

Looks really can be deceiving. It may not appear so from the outside but the Delphia 11 could be the most important boat launched in 2022, not because of what it is but because of what it stands for.

Candela, Vita and X Shore are all building cutting-edge electric boats for the top end of the market but the Delphia 11 is a commitment from the biggest boat builder in the world to mass produce electric boats.

The Polish brand, which was bought by Beneteau Group in 2018 will be electric only by 2024. Not only that but alongside their partner, Torqeedo, Delphia and Beneteau Group have committed to investing in the electric boats charging infrastructure in certain markets to boost confidence in its electric-only product.

The 11 is Delphia’s first foray into all-electric boating and to put it through its paces in a realistic environment, we were invited to the Netherlands to test the electric Delphia 11 Sedan alongside its diesel sibling and a diesel-powered flybridge version of the Delphia 11, dubbed the Flylounge.

Delphias of old were renowned for their bang-for-buck approach, with oodles of living space for a reasonable asking price and, although they were equipped to go offshore, most found homes on the rivers and lakes of mainland Europe.

The modern Delphia product is entirely focussed on inland boating and was designed by Tony Castro from the keel up with electric propulsion in mind. The hull is a full displacement hard chine design with an upright stem and full bow sections in a bid to balance generous interior volume with stable, efficient, slow- speed cruising.

Even with the 150hp diesel version of the Delphia 11 you’re topping out at 8.5 knots so life in the slow lane really is the name of the game. From Delphia’s base in Makkum we would do a loop of the local waterways with a stint on the IJsselmeer, swapping between the three boats for an ideal back-to-back taste of the differences between cruising aboard identical diesel and electric boats.

Groupe Beneteau launches new all-electric Delphia 11

Delphia Yachts , which was purchased by the Beneteau Group in 2018, has launched its first all-electric yacht along with the promise that the company will build only electric vessels by 2024.

At the Cannes Yachting Festival last September, Martin Schemkes, the recently appointed General Director of Delphia, said “Our vision is that 100% electric propulsion will usher in a new phase in boating and our mission will be to create the leadership in electric boating on inland waters. This new chapter is defined by a mindful approach to cruising.”

Both have spacious living areas (the beam is 12’6”) and can be configured with either a two-person bedroom suite with on-board office or as a three-cabin layout that can host up to ten people.

The Life version of the Delphia 11 is intended for cruising on lakes and has a single 38 kiloWatt hour battery pack. Cruise is for longer excursions on rivers and canals and has two battery packs totalling 76 kWh, and the Rapid version has the same double battery pack with the addition of a 22kW fast charger.

With the larger battery packs, the Cruise and Rapid versions claim a range of 80km (43nm) or 10 hours at 4.3 knots, and can be charged overnight with a standard 16A shore power connection. The charger on the Rapid version enables batteries to go from 40-80% in three hours.

All of the models and versions have integrated solar panels and smart inverters to supply power for the onboard electric system, navigation, galley appliances and other amenities.

The French group Bénéteau, world N2 of the boat market, has announced the purchase of the Polish shipyard Delphia Yachts, major actor in the design, construction and marketing of sailboats and motorboats, under its own brands (Delphia and Maxi), or outsourced for other manufacturers.

The takeover, which took place on July 12, comes just three days after the Beneteau group took over the Slovenian shipyard Seascape, one of the European leaders in the 4 to 8m sport sailboat market.

Consolidation continues in the boating industries, where the French group Bénéteau (Beneteau, Jeanneau, Lagoon, Prestige, Monte-Carlo Yachts, CNB, Wellcraft, Glastron, Scarab, Four-Winns, Seascape) is clearly at work, with the takeover of the Polish shipyard Delphia Yachts .

The acquisition of Delphia will take place through a Polish entity, of which Delphia Yachts will retain 20% of the capital.

Founded in 1990 and located in Olecko , Delphia Yachts is today one of the most important shipyards of Central and Eastern Europe.

The company, which employs 670 people, had a turnover of 130 million PLN last year, about 30 million euros, for a profit of 9 million PLN (2 million euros). Since its creation, it has built no less than 25,000 sailboats and motor boats.

This acquisition is part of the Bénéteau Group 's growth objectives announced in its Transform to Perform strategic plan drawn up by the chairman of its management board, Hervé Gastinel .

With Delphia Yachts , the French group can count on:

• increasing its industrial capacities, with an 18.000m2 production site located in Poland and specialized in the construction of outboard motor boats and small sailboats, segments on which the Bénéteau Group is developing an offensive strategy;
• increasing its development capabilities, with Delphia Yachts' new R & D and prototyping center; the intensification of its product offering on the segments of the monocoque sail and river motor boats;
• internationalization, through the strong commercial presence of the Delphia Yachts and Maxi Yachts brands (a Swedish brand name acquired by Delphia) in the Central European, Eastern and Scandinavian markets.

The acquisition of the Delphia Yachts business should be completed in the coming months, subject to obtaining the required regulatory approvals.

Hervé Gastinel , Chairman of the Bénéteau Group Management Board, commented on Yachting Art Magazine: "To support its development in the dynamic and strategic segment of outboard motor boats and small sailboats, the Bénéteau Group will rely on industrial and the know-how of the Delphia Yachts shipyard, this acquisition reinforces the Group's solidity and is part of its long-term strategy of sustainable and profitable growth ".
