SHOCKWAVE: The 63-foot Multihull proving a fierce competitor on the race circuit

Shockwave owner, Serge (Christiaan Durrant), a former fighter pilot in the Australian Air Force, is no stranger to operating in high-performance environments and getting teams to unite in their goals and performances on air, land and sea. Although Shockwave is still in the early days of a race program, the sensational 63-foot trimaran with her formidable shark graphic on the bow is a truly awesome sight, chewing up the miles and already proving a fierce competitor on the race circuit.

paradox 60 trimaran

Growing up in Australia, Serge enjoyed sailing and racing from a young age and like many of his countrymen, fell hard for the sport as a 13-year-old in 1983, when the Aussies won the America’s Cup and returned home with their prize as national heroes. “Everything I’ve done since then has been high-performance,” he said. And since then, has followed all levels of competitive sailing, from the America’s Cup to Olympics and all competitive arms of sailing.

Serge a well-respected strategic thinker, entrepreneur and corporate leader, started his career in the Royal Australian Air Force at 17 years of age where he flew for 14 years. He was a TOPGUN instructor at age 27, and notably the youngest F-18 Squadron Leader at 29 years old.

His passion for sailing and teaching brought him back to the water to instruct at the Royal Yacht Association of Australia in 2010, where he taught sailing and racing to high school students in dinghies and keelboats before getting serious about ocean racing in 2013. It was when campaigning for the boat “Blackwater” (Reynolds XS multihull) that the seed was planted for later purchasing Shockwave.

Having spent years getting water blasted in open ocean distance races aboard the Reynolds XS “Blackwater” and during a particularly wet Middle Sea Race in 2017, Serge came to the resounding conclusion, “we need a bigger boat.” Having viewed everything from Gunboats to MOD70’s, the decision to buy SHOCKWAVE (ex-Paradox, 63’ custom trimaran) felt like an organic transition from the Reynolds XS. It struck a nice balance between the creature comforts of cruising and the high-performance aspects & technological potential sought from a multihull racing program.

“Ultimately the decision to go with multihulls came down to the relentless pursuit of performance and technological advances that are possible on a multihull”, says Serge.

A fierce competitor

Shockwave is still in the early days of the program. After completing an electronics, systems and aesthetic refit in San Diego, CA late last year, the Shockwave team sailed 5500-nm to Antigua to commence a busy 2020 Caribbean race season that was abbreviated by coronavirus.

Race season started with the Caribbean Multihull Challenge in St. Maarten, F.W.I. in February 2020. Shockwave started strong, finishing first place on day one, against two MOD70’s “Argo” and “Maserati”. During the second race, as the Shockwave team charged up the coast to Philipsburg in a 33-knot sustained breeze with Reef 1 and the J3, they were keeping pace with MOD70 “Argo” tack-for-tack. Serge commented that as an owner, seeing the boat and the crew performing at the upper level of their limit while holding performance was a tremendous highlight, and came away from the day thrilled with the boat and crew’s performance even in light of the abrupt end of the race with a broken boom. The boom failure sidelined Shockwave for the rest of the weekend’s races, but the seeing the team and boat perform to the upper limits of their potential was exhilarating enough, “When Shockwave is at the edge the envelope is when I enjoy the boat the most”, says Serge.

Another highlight came during the RORC Caribbean 600 in February 2020, when Shockwave came back from the boom failure of the prior week, and sailed a strong race, overtaking “Wizard”: (who won monohull line honours) as they came around the southern tip of Guadeloupe. Shockwave would finish 2nd in the MOCRA class at the 2020 Caribbean 600.

paradox 60 trimaran

Technically the Shockwave Race Team is a professional team (with friends and family joining for various regattas) and come from a broad range of backgrounds from sail makers to designers and engineering coordinators to skippers and program managers.

“We’ve been racing a 35-foot catamaran for the last 6 years and now we’ve stepped up to Shockwave, which is a different category, and brought some specialist large multihull sailors onboard. I’m looking forward to bringing the team up to that next level of performance”, mentions Serge.

The innovative technology that powers the trimaran

While it was a big decision, the team felt that the technology that Doyle Sails offered – such as the Structured Luff and Cableless technology – set them apart from competitors. Pursuing the best possible performance was of utmost importance to the program and the team felt confident in their decision that Doyle could deliver on that promise.

Shockwave is unique in that it has the hulls of an ORMA 60, yet is outfitted for cruising (with electric winches, a comfortable interior and air-con) and has top-of-the-line racing technology and a carbon rotating wing mast. The team felt it would be best to seek a supplier that would offer excellent customer service and after-sales support and who could also handle the difficulty of adapting technology to the platform while still optimizing performance.

This is where Doyle Sails San Diego resident expert Mat Bryant comes into the equation. Mat Bryant, who joined Doyle Sails San Diego’s loft in 2019, brings over 20 years of professional sailing experience and offered the Shockwave team professionalism, customer-focused support and a broad range of multihull racing experience, and as a result, has become an integral component to the race team.

paradox 60 trimaran

It’s all about teamwork

Serge has always excelled in getting disparate teams to align and perform and on Shockwave it’s no different with the team comprised of four nationalities (AUS, SWE, USA, UK) and varied backgrounds. Aboard, Serge is working in conjunction with Team Manager (Scott Klodowski, USA) and Skipper (Jeff Mearing, UK) toward a cohesive race team that can execute precise manoeuvres automatically while ensuing safety measures and best practices are adhered to.

“Pulling together a team and determining best practices are key goals of our first season so we can all operate with the same patterns of communications executing standardized practices. This is key to the foundation of our program. An analogy would be a well-oiled pit team that can reliably and precisely perform a 7.2-second tire change on an F1 race car” says Serge about the team dynamics aboard Shockwave. “I am training a team where everyone knows their jobs, communication is standardized, the team is harmonized, and there are backup contingencies for the possibilities of what could go wrong.”

Serge frequently tells the team, “don’t let precedence be an excuse for mediocrity”.

Whenever building a program, factoring in sufficient budget contingencies for unknowns is important. No one could have foreseen or predicted the impacts of the pandemic on our season but having contingencies in place will work to absorb the unexpected … such as freight, crew expenses or significant repairs that may arise. Another lesson from the complexities that have arisen from COVID-19, “don’t let suppliers, authorities, or other regulators keep you from achieving your goals.”

paradox 60 trimaran

The beauty of multihull racing

Sailing is one of the few competitive sports where you are pitting yourself against the environment and its elements. Multihull racing brings it to the next level. For Serge, the race is truly against yourselves in the sense that you’re maximising the boat’s performance potential in an environment that is ever-changing and generally not in your favour!

So where to next for Shockwave? As an Australian national who has lived in both Sydney and Hobart, it is Serge’s long-time goal for multihulls to compete in the world-renowned Sydney-Hobart Race. But for right now, watch out for Shockwave in all her racing glory competing in the Middle Sea Race in Malta in October.

touching the void

Peter Aschenbrenner’s ballistic Nigel Irens designed trimaran Paradox scorched around the RORC 600 track in just over 40 hours, barely missing the overall record while taking line honours and the multihull class win.  Paradox’s design is derived from the ORMA 60 class, but with two tons of accommodation and a significantly smaller rig.  We profiled the boat with designer Irens when it first landed in the Caribbean, but here’s our first digital sit-down with scary-smart owner Peter Aschenbrenner.

Paradox: An argument that produces an inconsistency, typically within logic or common sense, which is valuable in promoting critical thinking and sometimes results in the re-examination of mathematics or logic.

SA:  Where did you get your sailing start?

paradox 60 trimaran

SA: What kind of boats made you the sailor you are ?

PA:  My love for sailing was a catalyst for my Dad, who bought a 22ft Dutch built sloop.  We lived near Boston and kept the boat in Marblehead, sailing every summer up to Maine or down to Newport.  As often happens, my Dad owned a succession of larger and larger keelboats on which I cruised and raced until I went off to college.   After college I moved to Europe and started a family and didn’t do much sailing until getting into fast singlehanded dinghies while living in Delaware.  I sailed in the Chesapeake Bay and in Nantucket on a little MX Ray and then graduated to a Musto Skiff after moving back to California.  I sailed for fun – essentially just for the pleasure of sailing fast on a high-performance boat.   I believe that the instincts I developed sailing skiffs are quite useful on a boat like Paradox.  Both are “apparent wind machines” that don’t like being overpowered and that reward proactive planning.

SA:  How about multihulls?  Have you always been into them, or is it a recent thing?

PA:  I have been very interested in multihulls since the mid-70s, and remember watching the evolution of the species with great interest.  The essential challenge of sailing is the efficient translation of wind energy into forward motion.  To me the modern multihull, and particularly the trimaran, represented a quantum leap forward with respect to this basic equation.  When I attended a few ORMA races around 2000 -2001 I was absolutely blown away by the sophistication and performance of the boats.  Looking back, it seemed that I had made up my mind years earlier that I wanted to own such a boat someday.    In fact Paradox is my third attempt to build a high performance cruising trimaran, the first project was back in the early ‘80s with a John Shuttleworth design, and then later I took a run at a Nigel Irens 50 footer that did not pan out either.  The third time was really a charm for me – Paradox embodies everything I had dreamed about for so many years.

SA:  Paradox is a cruising boat, right?  So what’s up with all the racing?

paradox 60 trimaran

SA: You seem to dig the long trips too.

PA: People ask me what is it like sailing Paradox across an ocean. For me it is about independence rather than isolation.  Some people are frightened by that but I enjoy it. I love seeing 360º of unbroken horizon – it goes back to a sense of total freedom, you become your own little sovereign state.  Sailing across the Atlantic, we go for days without seeing any other boats or aircraft.  It is a primal interaction with the Earth that you won’t get any other way.  Where else can you be where the scenery hasn’t changed for a couple of million years?  It reminds me of the film Waterworld.

SA :  So what’s next for Paradox?  Will we see you in a Transpac, or Fastnet, or do you just disappear off to palm-filled islands with dancing girls?

PA :   No plans to do the Transpac or Fastnet at this point.  Our next race will be the Voiles de St. Barth, after which I’d like to cruise a bit in the San Blas islands and then bring Paradox through the Panama canal and up to the San Francisco Bay for the summer.  SF is home base for me, so I’ll have the chance to day sail with friends and colleagues and just enjoy blasting around the Bay and watching the AC circus. We’ll probably do a couple of the local races including the Rolex Big Boat Series. After that – who knows.  The Pacific beckons…

SA :  now that you’ve put thousands and thousands of miles on her, Is there anything you’d change about the boat if you had to do it over again?

PA:    Not much.  I am pretty happy with the interior accommodations and equipment.  We made some minor tweaks to enhance “cruisability” over the past three years and I am really happy with the boat functionally.  As you may remember from your interview with Nigel Irens a couple of years ago, Paradox started (conceptually) as a smaller boat and gradually grew during the design phase from 50 to 58 to 60 feet, and then we added three feet of stern scoop after our first season.  If I were to start over again I would perhaps see if we could push overall length even more – perhaps to around 70 feet with the main hull bow pushed forward vs. the floats like Sodebo or Idec.  This would have given us a little more foretriangle area since the gennaker flies from the tip of the bow.  Nigel has a maxim on multihull design that I would paraphrase as “Design the longest boat you can possibly accept and then add a few feet”.

SA:  Of course, the siren song tempting every sailor is “higher speed”.  I confess that over the past three years I have at times been sorely tempted by the prospects of a taller mast, big bowsprit, retractable foils in the floats, etc.  If I were to do all this and take some weight out of the boat I would end up with….an ORMA 60!  I think that one of the most important and difficult aspects of any creative project is to know when to stop.  In the case of Paradox, I feel that through the collective experience and wisdom of her designers, project manager (François Boucher) and builder (Sam Marsaudon), we were lucky enough to create a very harmoniously balanced sailboat.  This sense of balance and proportion is probably the key factor that helped me resist the temptation to pursue some of these big performance enhancement projects.  I can honestly say that I have never been scared sailing on Paradox.  I am not sure that I would be able to say that today had we fitted a larger rig and foils.

Phaedo 3 and Paradox fly into Antigua

Paradox, Nigel Irens designed trimaran sailed by Pater Aschenbrenner

The Multihull record for the RORC Caribbean 600 has not been broken since the inaugural race in 2009. For the last six editions the record set by John Burnie and Claude Thelier on ORMA 60 trimaran, Region Guadeloupe (40 hours 11 mins 5 secs) has remained unbeaten. However, this year there are two multihulls, both owned by RORC members, that have the potential to smash the record by hours. Lloyd Thornburg's MOD 70, Phaedo 3 and Peter Aschenbrenner’s Nigel Irens 63, Paradox , both crossed the Atlantic to take part in this year's race.

Phaedo 3 was a late entry for this year's race and blasted into Falmouth Harbour, Antigua just four days before the start. Owner Lloyd Thornburg is taking part in his third RORC Caribbean 600 and is relishing the prospect of racing the MOD 70 around the course at phenomenal speed. Phaedo 3 's crew include Jules Verne record holder, Brian Thompson and double Vendee Globe winner, Michel Desjoyeaux, with Sam Goodchild and Pete Cummings.

“Brian Thompson and I have been working on getting a MOD 70 for two years and it only came to fruition in January,” commented Lloyd Thornburg. “Phaedo 3 sailed direct from France, across the Atlantic. She was originally Foncia, skippered by Michel Desjoyeaux and Michel will be racing with us for the RORC Caribbean 600. Brian Thompson put all the crew together and from what he has told me about Michel, he is an extraordinary sailor. For me this race is just fantastic, once you have gone around this course fast, you just want to go faster and that is the real driving force behind the MOD70. As far as the record is concerned, the boat and the crew are capable of beating it but we will wait to see what the conditions are like for the race and we know we have to finish the course before we can start talking about record pace. Besides keeping our eye of the competition, we will be watching the clock for sure.”

In 2013 Peter Aschenbrenner’s American 63ft trimaran, Paradox , came so close to beating the multihull course record, finishing just 11 minutes 47 seconds out of time. Paradox is back with a world-class crew including Jeff Mearings, as boat captain, Johnny Malbon, Paul Larsen and RORC Caribbean 600 multihull record holder, and race founder, John Burnie. Since Paradox 's last race the all-carbon trimaran has hit the turbo-charger. Paradox now sports carbon-fibre asymmetric daggerboards and a longer bow sprit with additional sail area.

Crew member Paul Larsen is a self-confessed speed-freak, setting the outright world speed sailing record in 2012. Sailrocket clocked up an astonishing 65.37 knots. (75.23 mph - 121.06 km/h).

“The next Sailrocket is going to be an offshore boat so this is a great way to remind myself of the issues and compromises offshore,” commented Paul.  “Plus this race is in the Caribbean and I am based in the UK, so it is a great place to be in February! Paradox is a very strong, fast boat but it weighs a couple of tons more than say an ORMA 60 because, as the name Paradox suggests, it is a blend between a cruising and a racing boat. The daggerboards are lifting foils, which are designed to reduce the drag on the boat, significantly reducing the friction in the water. There are two ways to make a boat go faster, you can add more power or you can reduce the drag. Foils lift the boat dynamically in much the same way as the wing of an aircraft, getting the balance right is the trick. As far as competing with Phaedo 3, the MOD70 is in a class of her own Paradox really is exactly what her name suggests, a boat that has made compromises for cruising. However, the calibre of some of the monohulls is absolutely awesome and potentially we could be racing around with them. If we can give Rambler 88 a run for her money that would be fantastic; personally I don't want to sail around this great course on our own, it would be great to have some company.”

Peter Aschenbrenner’s American 63ft trimaran yacht Paradox from California finished the RORC Caribbean 600 yacht race in Antigua on 20 Feb 03:22:52, in an elapsed time of 40:22:52, just missing out on the Multihull Course Record of 40:11:05 set by ORMA 60 sailing yacht Region Guadeloupe in the 2009 event.

Luxury yacht Paradox was just 11 minutes and 47 seconds outside the course record, which has stood since the very first edition of the race. However, Peter Aschenbrenner was still up-beat dockside : “Fantastic conditions, really amenable to Paradox, that was a dream ride,” smiled Peter . “We’re really surprised that we were so close to the record. That time was set by a race boat and we are just a cruising trimaran with three year old sails. So to get that close was really astonishing and a testament to what a great boat Paradox is.”

In the Multihull Class, Lloyd Thornburg’s Gunboat 66 yacht Phaedo needs to finish by 12:52:30 to beat Paradox. At 05:35 Phaedo was 81.2 miles from the finish.

Previous Records: Multihull record holder – Region Guadeloupe in 40 hours 11 mins 5 secs (2009) Monohull record held by Rambler 100 in 40 hours 20 mins 02 secs (2011)

During the race, there will be daily news stories, images and video updates from the fleet. All of the yachts are fitted with Yellowbrick trackers and competitors are encouraged to send blogs and images from the yachts, which will also appear on the website.

Dazcat Trimaran ‘Paradox’

Dazcat Paradox, a trimaran launched in 1997 was our first design and build for paraplegic sailor Alan.

Some background

Paradox, originally 30ft (later extended), was specifically designed for paraplegic sailor Alan to enter the Royal Western Yacht Club’s two-handed Round Britain and Ireland Race. She also happened to be Simon Baker’s (our now Director) first job with Dazcat. Paradox went on to become the 3x winner of the race she was built for, once with Matt Baker – Simon’s brother and member of the Multimarine build team. She also came 2 nd in class in the Fastnet as well as winning her class in the Round the Island.

She was bought by Simon and Matt in 2001 and raced extensively until she was T boned by a monohull the day before the 2005 Fastnet. She was then bought and fixed up by two (other) boatbuilders and went on to win her class in the 2010 Fastnet, sailed by Will Claxton and Matt Gill. Sold to Italy in 2016 she is now available for day charter…

Designer Daz is immensely proud that Paradox has done so well.

PARADOX has a fantastic racing record. During the 2013 Caribbean 600, Paradox beat the monohull course record set by Speedboat 100, and came within ten minutes of the multihull course record set by a racing ORMA trimaran. She won the Transatlantic Race 2015, from Newport to Lizard Point, sailing four consecutive 500+ mile days. More recently, PARADOX won the Rolex Middle Sea Race.

Paradox’s design allows for both comfortable cruising for up to six people, and impressive  speeds of up to 36 knots when racing.  Easily sailed shorthand by two people, or safely day-sailed with a dozen friends and family, Paradox is a unique and highly versatile sailboat.

General Information

“I  sailed Rapido Hull #01 on the Mediterranean Sea the other day and we were doing 14 knots upwind while cooking in the spacious kitchen!" Ferdinand van West (former F18 World Champion working with designers, Morrelli & Melvin ). ( Click here for original article in Catamaran Racing.)

Billed as the World’s Ultimate Ocean Cruising Trimaran , the Rapido 60 really is the Queen of the Oceans . It offers speed, safety, performance – and luxury.

The inspiration behind the Rapido 60 comes from Paul Koch (co founder of Rapido Trimarans), arguably, the man who has built more production trimarans than anyone else on the planet.

The design is by world renowned naval architects, Morelli & Melvin Design and Engineering who use some of the most sophisticated technology in the world. Triac Composites  is our exclusive builder.

While the foam sandwich and carbon construction is lightweight which gives the boat its speed, it also provides an extremely strong and rigid structure that has been designed to withstand the might of the oceans.

An additional benefit of the foam sandwich construction is the high degree of insulation, protecting the Rapido when the sun beats down.

Morelli & Melvin enjoy a very strong international reputation. Their designs even include entries for the America’s Cup .

[Video caption: Take a tour onboard Rapido 60, Romanza with owners, Dougall and Jaz Love, during Hamilton Island Race Week.]

Morrelli & Melvin's computer modelling said that the Rapido 60 was very strong. And so we tested it.

We bolted the centre hull of the Rapido to the factory floor in HCMC. We then brought in two mobile cranes – each took a diagonal corner of the two outer hulls. With one diagonal corner each, the two cranes began to lift while the trimaran’s centre hull remained bolted to the floor, causing it to twist. One tonne of lifting pressure… Two tonnes… Three tonnes…

As the trimaran twisted it began to creak and groan. But the sensitive electronic equipment we had measuring every move and twist remained unphased. Everything was within design parameters.

Seven tonnes… Eight tonnes… Nine tonnes…

The pressure was eased and the Rapido spring back into its original condition – totally unaffected by the enormous twisting pressure that had been placed upon it.

The computer modelling had accurately predicted the incredible structural strength of the composites used in the Rapido. The Rapido is built to take on the oceans.

Rapido is, simply, the Queen of the Oceans.

Incredible storage capacity

The Rapido 60 has amazing storage capability in the floats (4.8m x 1.3m), beneath the seats in the cockpit (2.1m x 0.5m) and in the forward cabin (1.4m x 1.2m x 1.2m).

The Rapido 60 has amazing, dedicated storage capacity. Floats (4.8m x 1.3m). Beneath the cockpit seats (2.1m x 0.5m). Beneath the cockpit floor (2.1m x 2.9m x 1.3m). Forward of forward cabin (1.4m x 1.2m x 1.2m).

FAST AND POWERFUL

Trimarans are safe, powerful and fast as demonstrated by the fact that they consistently win races and hold the solo speed record for circumnavigating the world.

Safety at sea is the No. 1 priority and this thinking is reflected throughout the design and construction of the Rapido.

The Rapido 60 has some truly amazing living spaces which provide more open, private and intimate areas than monohulls or catamarans.

stable and comfortable

Trimarans are comfortable on all points of sail.

The combination of safety, performance and comfort put the Rapido in a league of its own. The enormous trampoline nets add fun and excitement as you watch the blue water rush underneath you – or as you lounge on the nets while gently floating over a reef. You will be instantly hooked..

Latitude38

The need for sailing at extreme speed under sail has apparently taken a powerful hold on Lloyd Thornburg, Latitude’s friend from Newport Beach, St. Barth and Santa Fe. Yesterday Team Phaedo introduced a new addition to their stable, the MOD70 Phaedo3, for Monday’s start of the RORC Caribbean 600 . Thornburg told the press he’d secretly been trying to put together a MOD70 project for the last two years.

Phaedo3 will be joined at the Antigua starting line of the Caribbean 600 by San Franciscan Peter Aschenbrenner’s Nigel Irens 63-ft trimaran,  Paradox . Both trimarans have a chance to break the course record of 40 hours, 11 minutes set by the ORMA 60 Region Guadeloupe in the inaugural race. As Paradox is a half racer, half cruiser, and Phaedo3 is an all-out racer, the latter has the much better shot at the record.

paradox 60 trimaran

Both trimarans were built as tamed-down versions of the wildly fast and fragile ORMA 60 trimarans. But it certainly hasn’t seemed to limit their performance much. We sailed aboard Thomas Siebel’s Orion, the only MOD70 on the West Coast, one afternoon on Banderas Bay. In winds of about 20 knots, the trimaran was screaming along at up to 34 knots. We couldn’t believe it.

That’s nothing compared to what Orion crewmembers tell us the MOD70 has done on San Francisco Bay, namely hitting 44 knots! If we’re not mistaken, that’s just a tad faster than was achieved by any of the 72-ft America’s Cup 34 catamarans. And unlike the America’s Cup cats, MOD70 tris aren’t foilers. Then, too, one of the MOD70s flipped in a moderate breeze during a race off Ireland. The video for that is all over the Internet.

Phaedo3 is MOD70 #3, previously known as Fonica when it was campaigned by the great Michel Desjoyeaux. He will be along for the Caribbean 600. The rest of the all-star crew will consist of Brian Thompson, Sam Goodchild, Pete Cumming, Sam Wooga Bason, Warren Fitzgerald and Romain Attanasio.

In just six short years the Caribbean 600, which starts and finishes in Antigua and weaves among a number of islands, has arguably become the world’s best middle distance ocean race.

paradox 60 trimaran

Latitude readers may remember that Thornburg and crew did an incredible 427 miles in 24 hours during the 2013 Transpac with his orange Gunboat 66 Phaedo, a legitimate cruising catamaran complete with a pizza oven.

Unfortunately, the mast came down the following day in rather mild conditions. Over the next 18 months, she got a fabulous new rig and an extensive makeover in Newport Beach, an area that Lloyd has found to his liking. Lloyd is not new to California, having attended the Art Design College in Pasadena. During that time he sailed a Soling, if we remember correctly, out of Marina del Rey. He’s into a different world now.

The addition of Phaedo3 to Team Phaedo instantly makes Thornburg, who is only in his mid-30s, one of the bigger international players in high speed ocean racing. Good luck, guys!

Not to be overlooked is the introduction of George David’s daring new Rambler 88, which replaces his Rambler 92 and Rambler 100. It will be a warm-up for her Voiles de St. Barth match-up with Jim Clark’s reportedly $100 million 100-footer, Comanche, which made her debut in the Sydney to Hobart Race.

Irens and Cabaret also gave Paradox a significantly smaller rig, with a mast about 18 feet shorter than that of an ORMA 60, and she flies her gennaker from the bow instead of at the end of a 6-foot bowsprit.
