The Details

IWC’s Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph Ocean Racer (IW3902-16 (aka: 3902-16, IW390216)) was originally released in 2014. This watch features a automatic movement beating at a frequency of 28800 bph ( 4 Hz) to provide a 68-hour power reserve when fully wound.

The titanium case measures 45.5mm in diameter and roughly 14.5mm thick. The round case is paired with a silver color dial with feuille-shaped hands, and a arabic numerals hour markers and minute track, covered by a sapphire glass. IWC’s Portugieser model IW3902-16 is water resistant up to 60 meters (197 ft). A display caseback is over the back of the watch case.

IWC is based in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, and was founded in 1868. 11 legs for a total 38.3739 nautical miles , equal to more than 70.000km  that involve  7 sailing teams from around the world. These are, in a nutshell, the numbers behind a legendary challenge once known as the Whitebread Round the World Race , perhaps the most challenging among sailing competitions: it is today called the Volvo Ocean Race , but nothing has lost of its appeal and toughness and may be regarded to as the 24 Hours of Le Mans among sailing competitions.

Introducing the IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph “Ocean Racer” for the Volvo Ocean Race

IWC prolongs their partnership with the Volvo Ocean Race and emphasizes this by introducing a new special edition, the Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph “Ocean Racer”. For the second time IWC will be the Official Timekeeper and sponsor of the IWC 24 hour Speed Record Challenge. While the previous edition for the Volvo Ocean Race sported a technical style and was executed in titanium, the new Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph “Ocean Racer” is made in stainless steel and has much more classic looks.

The IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph “Ocean Racer” is the second Yacht Club dedicated to the partnership between IWC and the Volvo Ocean Race and is a limited edition of 1,000 pieces. Its silver-plated dial has applied blued numerals, blued hands and the hour indices are coated with Super-LumiNova. The watch measures 45.4 mm in diameter and comes on a black rubber strap featuring an alligator leather inlay. It’s water-resistant to 6 bar (comparable to a depth of 60 meters), meaning it’s perfectly fit for use in and around water, however when you want to go deep-sea diving we suggest you opt for an IWC Aquatimer .

Inside ticks the IWC-manufactured calibre 89361 (the same that can be found in the IWC Portuguese Chronograph Classic ref. 3904 ), featuring a flyback function and which measures time intervals of up to 12 hours, shown by an hour and minute hand, in the subdial at 12 o’clock. At 6 o’clock is the small second hand and the date is visible through an aperture at 3 o’clock. The movement has 68 hours of power reserve and features IWC’s double-pawl winding system. By the way, did you know that this is the only Portuguese model with a crown protector?

Befitting the sailing theme, the rotor looks like a ship’s wheel, and is visible through the sapphire case back. Engraved around that sapphire pane, is “IWC PORTUGIESER YACHT CLUB OCEAN RACER • ONE OUT OF 1000”. This model is called “Portuguese” in English, but in German, the language spoken in Schaffhausen, it is “Portugieser”. That’s why the case back is engraved with the German “PORTUGIESER” and not the English name for this watch.

IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph “Ocean Racer”

Boat races and watches – a weird and yet seemingly ever-green combination. A few years ago, IWC joined the craze and has chosen to sponsor the Volvo Ocean Race, a remarkably challenging, round-the-world race that starts this October in Alicante, Spain, and terminates in Gothenburg, Sweden, in June 2015. With regards to IWC’s role more specifically, the brand is the event’s Official Timekeeper, partner of the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing team, and sponsor of the 24-hour speed record.

And while that does seem like a total overkill for someone not that  into the world of competitive sailing, this web of collaborations does result in a surprisingly restrained, yet sporty-looking chronograph that arguably makes a lot more sense than the sponsorship-frenzy behind it. The watch dedicated to the event is the IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph “Ocean Racer,” a limited edition of just 1,000 pieces.

It was almost three years ago that we discussed its predecessor (article here) , the 2011-2012 limited edition which featured a titanium case and carbon fiber dial; and it sure is interesting to see the 180 degree turn the new model shows when compared to the previous version. For 2014, IWC released a more mature, dare we say more down-to-Earth iteration, as the new IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph “Ocean Racer” sports a case in stainless steel, a clean-looking and highly legible white dial with beautiful blue indices and hands, as well as a splash of red here and there, for a bit sportier of an appearance.

The IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph “Ocean Racer” is a substantially sized watch, at over 45 millimeters wide and 14.5 millimeters thick, and it is rated to be water resistant to 6 bars – meaning that it should be able to resist any splashes of water it will be exposed to aboard a racing yacht, while it really is not suitable for swimming.

Functionality-wise, the latest model brings nothing new to the table, as it displays the hours and minutes, the running seconds on a sub-dial at 6 o’clock, the date, and features a flyback chronograph that measures up to 12 hours. Although we have seen this bi-compax layout in numerous other models from IWC, the sub-dial at 12 o’clock that comprises the displays for both the minutes and hours of the chronograph remains a neat detail, as it makes for a more balanced dial, without compromising functionality or legibility.

The movement inside is IWC’s in-house manufactured 89361 movement, and it is proudly displayed through the sapphire caseback – as opposed to being covered up by the engraved caseback we are used to seeing on so many of these limited edition watches. The movement features a flyback chronograph, IWC’s double-pawl winding system with a 360-degree rotor designed to resemble a ship’s wheel, and it offers an ample 68 hours of power reserve.

However, it is not necessarily the clever movement or the somewhat over-done marketing behind the watch that is really interesting, but what the styling of this 2014-2015 model indicates: the more restrained design – lacking all the carbon-fiber and titanium – shows that after recent years’ high-tech craze, the direction apparently is a more elegant aesthetic, one that is arguably more suitable to a mature brand like IWC. Nevertheless, technological advancements (i.e. the complex in-house movement) remain – they are just back “under the hood.”

Gentleman Sailor: Testing the IWC Portugieser Yacht Club Chronograph

IWC launched the Portugieser Yacht Club in 2010 into the sporty yet elegant world of sailing. For 2020, the nautical chronograph model has a classic look and a steel bracelet upgrade. We give it a thorough review in this feature from the WatchTime archives.

The new IWC Portugieser Yacht Club Chronograph is a watch you can wear with confidence anywhere at the marina. A first glance shows that the third generation of the sportiest Portugieser model, our test watch, is designed to be both a nautical timepiece and a luxury accessory. The first impression is confirmed upon closer inspection of its polished and satin-finish case, sunburst blue dial and brightly polished hands. Every component is flawlessly finished and worthy to be part of the supremely elegant Portugieser collection.

For the first time in its 10-plus-year history, this Portugieser Yacht Club boasts a steel bracelet rather than a rubber or leather strap — a sturdy but elegant IWC steel bracelet with brushed outer links and polished inner links. Shortening the bracelet involves simply pressing a button on the back of each row of sturdy links to remove it. Unlike simpler bracelet designs, using screws or hammering is not needed.

Inside the safety folding clasp, there is also a quick extension piece that quickly and easily lengthens the bracelet by up to 7 mm. Pressing the polished “IWC” button on the outer bar of the clasp extends the bracelet in seven increments — without ever removing the watch from your wrist. Two safety buttons round out the sturdy and well-designed folding clasp.

Detailed Modifications In addition to the bracelet, the dial has also been updated. The central chronograph hand is now steel-gray instead of red, and the date window has been shifted from the 3 o’clock position to the small seconds subdial at 6 o’clock. Both changes enhance the elegance of the Yacht Club and were well received by our editorial staff.

The elegant impression is diminished, however, by the enlargement of the already considerable stainless-steel case from 43.5 mm to 44.6 mm. Our editorial staff admitted that no one among them had a wrist to match its substantial dimensions.

Even so, the large, heavy watch is quite comfortable to wear thanks to ergonomically shaped sloping lugs and a supple steel bracelet. Unfortunately, the flexibility and adjustability of the IWC’s bracelet results in relatively large gaps between the links, which can catch and pull hair.

Proven Technology Components taken from earlier generations of the Yacht Club include the sturdy and powerful in-house movement, Caliber 89361, with many excellent features like a 68-hour power reserve; a traditional column-wheel control mechanism; the brand’s own exceptionally efficient Pellaton dual-pawl winding system; a free-sprung, temperature-resistant Glucydur balance wheel; and a flyback function for the direct restarting of the running chronograph. It can also show off beautiful decorative finishes, gold-enhanced engraving and a gold IWC medallion on the skeletonized oscillating rotor. Another feature of the in-house movement is the combined 12-hour and 60-minute counter in the upper half of the dial, which is intended to show elapsed time intuitively, as on a clock. The combined counter is too small for everyday use, however, and its markings are too fine to read elapsed time to the minute quickly and easily. The chronograph seconds track around the dial is also extremely fine, and the central chronograph seconds hand is insufficiently long to fully reach it. In sum, it’s a mixed bag, with clearly legible time and date, and elapsed time that is much more difficult to read.

Accurate Rate Our rate test revealed more about the Swiss movement. The electronic timing machine showed a negligibly small daily rate of +0.8 seconds, a maximum deviation between the positions of only 4 seconds and almost the same values when the chronograph is engaged. A two-week wearing test confirmed the small daily deviation with values between zero and +2 seconds — making our test watch a reliable partner for everyday use.

In addition to the movement, another feature of the Yacht Club that hasn’t changed arouses mixed feelings — the pressure resistance of six bar that corresponds to water pressure at a depth of 60 meters. Although this may sound like a lot at first, the water resistance as it is tested under laboratory conditions is rather low for a nautical luxury sports watch linked to the world of sailing. Coming in contact with spray or waves means a watch should be resistant to at least 10 bar or 100 meters to ensure a certain degree of security in a variety of different environments. And even though this still isn’t a lot, it is the current standard for any water sports watch not explicitly designed for diving.

Advice for boat owners is simply this: it’s better to wear this watch in the evening, below deck, or to dinner at the marina, and either take it easy onboard during the day or rely on a sports watch that is clearly defined as such. SCORES: Strap and clasp (max. 10 points): Very attractive, highly functional stainless-steel bracelet with safety folding clasp and quick extension. Large gaps between links. 9 ­­­ Operation (5): Generously sized, smoothly operating pushers are easier to use than the screw-down crown. The large crown is easy to turn but needs some force to pull out. The chronograph has a flyback function for direct restart of an ongoing timing sequence. 4 Case (10): The case is beautifully finished but is rather simple and water resistant to only 60 meters. 8 Design (15): Attractive combination of sportiness and elegance. The superior quality of every component is easily apparent. 14 Legibility (5): The time and date are both easy to read, but elapsed time presents more difficulty. Beautiful execution of details. Good to see that IWC decided to upgrade the Portugieser from quasigirly watch to man-sized. It’s hardly an Arni watch though.

I would buy this watch in a second (no pun intended) except for the high price. As for the increased diameter, I have a large wrist and do not buy watches less than 43 mm. Smaller diameters look terrible on me. If you need a large diameter watch reviewer, let me know. Thanks.

Two big problems for me. The size (too big), very few people have wrist size like Arni, water tightness 60m is a joke.

I really like this IWC watch, however, it’s shallow water resistance at the price, is a non-starter. IWC is certainly capable of increasing the water resistance range.

I always enjoy my Watchtime magazine when it arrives, and the email updates. Regarding IWC’s new Yacht Club, I think it is a beautiful watch. I have a large wrist, so, I will not wear a watch under 43mm. Smaller watches look too small. I do have trouble with the 60 meter water resistance, but find myself looking at this watch over and over in your magazine. That is when I know I want it. Hope to order one in the near future.

I’m veary interested in watches and would love to know more about them. I would like to see , the new modells.

IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph “Ocean Racer” Watch

IWC are for the second year running the sponsors and official timekeepers of the Volvo ocean race, the amazingly challenging round the world race starting in Alicante in October 2014 and finishing in Gothenburg, Sweden in June next year. IWC have released a special edition “Ocean Racer” to commemorate their involvement.

When I first got the press release for the Ocean Racer I was expecting the usual Yachting shouty piece that we have come to expect, with very loud bright dials and adorned with plenty of carbon fibre and titanium. Yet to my amazement this is a more mature elegant affair, and very good looking indeed.

The stainless steel case is a good size for this type of piece, coming in at 45mm, which sits nicely on wrist and not too thick at 14.5mm, fitting under shirt cuffs with ease. The dial is clean-looking, white and highly legible with gorgeous blue hands and indices. The layout of the dial seems to be normal for chronographs with a seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock, date window with nice black numbers at 3 o’clock. The chronograph features a flyback second hand controlled by the pusher either side of the screw-in crown with crown guards. And the last but by no means least sub-dial at 12 o’clock is the chronograph displaying both hours and minutes, which in my opinion is a very nice detail. A spattering of red on the chronograph dial and main dial gives it a slightly sporty feel but without over doing it like some companies I could mention.

Peering through the exhibition case (which I personally wish more manufacturers did on special editions) you will see the IWC in-house manufactured 89361 movement featuring a flyback chronograph, IWC’s double-pawl winding system with full 360 rotor in the shape of a yacht’s wheel. The power reserve is good for 68 hours. Inscribed round the outside of the back is the limited edition number and depth rating of 6 bar.

To finish off the piece IWC have added a thick rubber strap with alligator leather inlay and a folding stainless steel clasp.

I really like the aesthetics and elegance of this piece. They could have gone mad with a bright colour, many sub-dials etc. but in my opinion IWC did it the best way: keeping it clean, crisp and modern, which is very suitable for a mature brand like themselves. The piece will be just at home either out to sea on board a yacht or relaxing in the harbour over coffee, watching the boats come and go. So well done IWC for not following the yachting trend and releasing a piece with elegant yet sporty credentials.

In Russia, the western concept of building architecturally beautiful golf courses filled with modern and luxurious amenities has found fertile ground. What was considered a frivolous pastime during the time of the Soviets has become the latest trend for the stylish set. These days, there are countless options around Moscow to practice golf, polo, ski, yachting, and other sports alongside 5-star hotels, luxurious country houses, and magnificent villas.

The game of golf is a sport that requires passion and expertise. It is also part of a culture that considers this pastime a synonym of social prestige and exclusivity. In recent years, the new Russian elite has turned to golf as a vehicle of integration in the era of globalization. Golf courses are also meeting and socializing spaces where Muscovite tycoons can relax and also seal business deals.

Golf Courses in Russia

The Moscow Country Club, Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club, Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club, and Zavidovo Golf Club, PGA National Russia are some of the most exclusive and elegant golf courses in Russia. Some of them have made it to the list of Top 15 golf clubs in the world, a source of great prestige for the country.

The first 18-hole golf course built in Russia, Moscow Country Club, hosts the exclusive PGA European Tour. Located just eight miles from the city center, this luxurious facility was created by architect Robert Trent Jones Jr . The design takes advantage of a typical Russian birch and spruce forest to provide a natural environment of extraordinary beauty.

Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club

The Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is 18 miles from the heart of Moscow, close to historical monuments from the 17th and 18th centuries. Designed by famed architects Paul and Dave Thomas , this 18-hole course is part of a complex that includes a yacht club, an equestrian center, and a health and wellness facility. Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is Russia’s version of a classic country club with multiple attractions.

Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club

This park is among the best in Eastern Europe and was awarded the 2014 World Golf Award as the best golf course in Russia. Located 25 miles from Moscow, it is part of a vast complex featuring an 18-hole golf course, designed by Jack Nicklaus , a polo club and a mountain ski club with four tracks. The design combines classic Scottish, Alpine, and English features in a dreamy landscape.

Less than 60 miles from Moscow, this golf course with a definite Scottish design is the only one in Russia recognized as a PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association) from Britain and Ireland. Located in an ecologically pristine area on the banks of the Volga River, the Zavidovo Golf Club embodies the spirit and appearance of the legendary Scottish golf courses. Its many springs and streams, hills, forests, swamps and lakes justify its reputation as a very demanding circuit. Last year, it entered the exclusive club of the 15 best golf courses in the world.   ■

“Breakfast & Lunch among friends”

The Breakfast Club has been a locally-owned Moscow breakfast staple for 12 years. The food is delicious, and the portions are appropriate (not gigantic). They have stuffed biscuits and gravy which is biscuits cut in half with eggs and bacon in the middle, covered in in-house made sausage gravy. If you are ever in Moscow in the wee hours of the morning, this is the place to stop!!!

The Breakfast Club has been a locally-owned Moscow breakfast staple for 12 years. The food is delicious, and the portions are appropriate (not gigantic). They have stuffed biscuits and gravy which is biscuits cut in half with eggs and bacon in the middle, covered in in-house made sausage gravy. If you are ever in Moscow in the wee hours of the morning, this is the place to stop!!!
