The REV Ocean dethroned the 590-foot Azzam , which had held the record for largest yacht in the world for six years.
Unlike most superyachts, the REV Ocean wasn't only designed for luxury cruising. It was built to be a research vessel , carrying out scientific expeditions with the mission of safeguarding the world's oceans.
The yacht will, however, be available for charter to help support the cost of its scientific missions, a publicist for the REV Ocean told Business Insider. The REV Ocean, which is on its way to Norway to be outfitted, will be fully completed in 2020.
Take a look at the 600-foot, record-breaking superyacht.
At 600 feet, or 182.9 meters, long, the REV Ocean is the world's largest superyacht.
It dethroned the 590-foot Azzam , which held the record for more than six years.
After 18 months of construction, the vessel was lowered into the water at the VARD Tulcea shipyard in Romania on August 24.
The REV Ocean was commissioned by Norwegian billionaire businessman Kjell Inge Røkke.
Røkke is worth an estimated $3.3 billion.
He owns almost 67% of Aker , a publicly traded shipping and offshore drilling conglomerate.
Røkke also started and funds a non-profit foundation, also called REV Ocean, that's dedicated to safeguarding and preserving the oceans.
The Norwegian businessman is one of more than 200 wealthy individuals who have signed the Giving Pledge , promising to give away at least half of their fortune to charity.
The REV Ocean was built "over an extensive and complicated build period" of 18 months.
The yacht was designed by Espen Oeino , who has designed some of the world's most famous yachts , including that of the late Microsoft co-founder, Paul Allen , the 414-foot "Octopus."
The REV Ocean was built to be a scientific vessel in addition to a cruising yacht. REV stands for "Research Expedition Vessel."
According to the REV Ocean foundation, the superyacht will be used by scientists for research relating to the impact of CO2 emissions on the ocean, plastic pollution, and unsustainable fishing.
"REV Ocean will strive to fill critical knowledge gaps, develop innovative solutions, and bridge science, business and policy sectors to achieve positive change," reads a statement from the foundation.
The REV Ocean will be able to hold 55 scientists and 35 crew members.
The vessel's onboard equipment will include scientific trawls , sonar systems, laboratories, auditorium and classrooms, moonpool, AUV and submarine, an ROV with 6,000 meters depth capacity, and advanced communication equipment.
The superyacht will also be available for charter to help fund its scientific missions.
The vessel's billionaire owner, Røkke, will also use the yacht personally, but he'll pay to rent it like any other customer, according to REV Ocean's communication manager, Lawrence Hislop.
"The primary focus, branding and emphasis, however, is on science," Hislop told Business Insider.
As a charter vessel, the REV Ocean will have the capacity to carry 28 guests and 54 crew.
According to its website, the superyacht will be available for charter "to private individuals, companies, and institutions seeking to improve their awareness of the ocean."
The price of chartering the yacht is not yet finalized, but REV Ocean is in the process of negotiating a contract with a yacht chartering company, Hislop told Business Insider.
Next, the ship will go to Norway to be fully outfitted.
In the coming weeks, the REV Ocean will be towed down the Danube River and into the Black Sea. It will then pass through the Bosporus Strait in Istanbul, cross the Mediterranean, traverse the Strait of Gibraltar, and eventually end up at the VARD shipyard in Brattvag, Norway.
The journey is expected to take between 30 and 35 days.
The vessel will be fully complete sometime in 2020.

Introducing Project Sama: The First Aman Superyacht
The 600-ft superyacht will be an Aman hotel on the water.

With a global network of hotels offering unbridled levels of luxury, any news from Aman will have the attention of avid travelers. The announcement of an all-new Aman-branded superyacht – currently under the name of Project Sama – is lavish even by the highest of standards.
Set for completion in 2025, the 600-ft motor-powered vessel will be as close to an Aman hotel on the sea as possible, with 50 exclusive guest suites – each of which has its own balcony – an array of dining outlets, including an all-day restaurant and a more casual bar and lounge; a serene Aman spa; and an expansive beach club area for ocean access.
While Project Sama is being developed in a joint venture between Aman and Cruise Saudi, design, execution and management are falling very much on the hotel group’s shoulders, ensuring that the impeccable standards of Aman hospitality are upheld. To ensure the signature Aman style, which is distinguishable by its clean lines, minimal finishes and clear Japanese influence, shines through, SINOT Architecture and Design has been enlisted to oversee the design of this momentous yacht project.

“The announcement of Project Sama marks an exciting moment in Aman’s growth and evolution, as we not only continue to diversify our geographical portfolio on land but also at sea, creating sanctuaries in unfrequented locations and continuing to reframe the concept of luxury hospitality,” says Aman CEO Vlad Doronin. “Project Sama will provide transformative experiences within the revered Aman setting and service, which is unlike any other yacht experience, ultimately creating a whole new category in on-the-water discovery.”

The Best Luxury Hotels With Private Yachts
With the launch of Project Sama still a way in the future, Aman has not yet announced the measures it is taking to limit her environmental impact. However, with the wider group having long been committed to sustainability and forging a meaningful and measurable relationship with the planet, there are plenty of assurances that its latest project will be equally as responsible.
The Aman superyacht is but the latest in a host of significant developments for the group, which first launched in 1988 with the opening of Thailand’s Amanpuri. Other new openings on the horizon include Aman New York and Aman Miami, both of which continue the group’s gentle expansion into the urban hotel market following the opening of Aman Tokyo in 2014.

Azzam ’s six-year reign as the world’s largest superyacht is coming to an end. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates 590-foot boat will soon be displaced at the top of that very exclusive list by a just-launched 600-foot expedition yacht from Norway.
The massive REV Ocean superyacht was launched the VARD Tulcea shipyard in Romania on Saturday, the company announced in a press release over the weekend. The yacht’s first taste of ocean water follows an extensive 18-month construction process. There’s still work to be done, though, as the boat won’t be fully complete in 2020.

REV Ocean is the brainchild of billionaire businessman Kjell Inge Røkke. He has called the yacht cornerstone of his goal of improving ocean health worldwide. The Espen Oeino-designed boat, which the Norwegian considers equal parts research vessel and charter yacht, will take scientists around the world, allowing them to gather vital information about the impact of carbon dioxide emissions, plastic pollution and unsustainable fishing, all of which Røkke hopes will aid aid efforts to preserve the sea.
“Today is an especially exciting day, our state-of-the-art research vessel has achieved a major milestone and we are now one step closer to realizing our vision of safeguarding the ocean,” CEO Nina Jensen said. “We look forward with great anticipation to REV Ocean ’s journey to Norway and seeing the next stage of progress towards our ambitions of developing ocean solutions.”
The boat will now travel from Romania to Norway, where the finishing touches will be applied over the coming months, according to Forbes . During this stage, the boat will be outfitted with all manner of scientific gear and equipment, including research labs, sonar systems, a moon pool, classrooms, an auditorium and a remote operated robot capable of diving to depths of up to 20,000 feet (or about 3.7 miles below the surface). Once complete, the boat will be able to carry 55 scientists, along with a crew of 35.
But the superyacht won’t just be for scientists. The boat’s website makes clear that REV Ocean will also be available for charter by groups or individuals “seeking to improve their awareness of the ocean.” During charters, the ship will be able to accommodate up to 28 guests, with room for 54 crew members. Pricing information isn’t yet available, but proceeds from charters will be used to help fund the boat’s research operations. Check out more photos of the ship’s launch below:

CRESCENT Yacht – Stunning $600 Million Superyacht
CRESCENT yacht is a 135.50 meter (445 ft) superyacht built by Luerssen in Germany and launched in 2018. She can accommodate up to 18 guests and 40 crew members and cost a rumored US $600 Million.
Despite her considerable price, the owner is unknown and his identity has not been released to the public after her purchase.
CRESCENT is currently considered 19th on the list of largest yachts in the world and the 11th largest ever built by Luerrsen.
CRESCENT yacht interior
The nature of the interior and the exact layout are unknown, and only speculations and estimates are available.
It is assumed that CRESCENT includes a sizable gym, several swimming pools, a movie theatre, spa facilities, a beauty salon with several rooms, and an outdoor barbecue.
Wifi and air conditioning as well as a large elevator are also available aboard the superyacht.
The renowned French design house Zuretti was responsible for developing an extravagant interior design for the motor yacht CRESCENT.
They specialize in custom projects and have worked on a variety of luxury vessels in the past.
Their trademark style combines classic elements with contemporary features which is what CRESCENT’s interior most likely looks like as well.
Luerssen has described the interior as “traditionally styled” which suggests high-quality wooden elements, luxurious upholstery, and natural tones combined with opulent light fixtures.
According to the renowned manufacturer this style was chosen in accordance with the owner’s wishes.
Due to her size, she is estimated to have at least three major salons and most likely very spacious cabins.
CRESCENT has a distinct absence of open-air space since most of her decks are permanently covered.
Her pools and jacuzzis are all located in shaded areas and not visible from passing boats or from the air.
The only exception is a medium-sized pool located in a somewhat hidden spot on the aft deck. At least one of her pools is said to feature a custom-made glass bottom.
The exact layout of her cabins isn’t known, however, CRESCENT features a sizable master suite with panoramic views.
She can host up to 18 guests in an estimated 9 cabins and has space for a crew of 40 members.
One of the few publicly known features is her large glass atrium which spans three separate floors.
This impressive structure has a tinted glass front and can be seen from both her starboard and port side.
These large window fronts let in additional natural light giving the interior a more modern and innovative design. Across the entire yacht, a state-of-the-art entertainment system has been installed, including large tv screens in all bedrooms and salons as well as a modern audio system.
Specifications
CRESCENT displaces an incredible 9.194 tons making her one of the largest yachts in the world by weight. Even for her length of 135.50 m (445 ft) this is impressive.
Her top speed lies somewhere around 18 knots, although she tends to cruise at 12 knots which is reasonably fast considering her gross tonnage.
She is powered by twin MTU 16V4000 diesel engines and has a beam of 22.04 meters (72.4 ft) and a draft of 5.2 meters (17.1 ft).
CRESCENT sails under the Cayman Islands flag, which is one of the most popular in the world for superyachts.
Although the exact details of her sale from Luerssen are unknown, she is rumored to have cost US $600 Million with average running costs of US $25 to $50 Million every year.
She was constructed at the Lemwerder shipyard, which lies close to the city of Bremen in Germany. Since CRESCENT is currently in private ownership, she is not available for charter or for sale.
The Norwegian naval architect and designer Espen Oeino worked on CRESCENT and developed her eye-catching exterior.
Unlike the majority of large yachts, she is not white, which makes her stand out even more, especially when docked in popular harbors across Europe.
The secrecy surrounding her owner and interior has made her a popular target for yacht spotters, although there are still very few photos available of this magnificent vessel.
The exterior of CRESCENT is a dark navy blue, and the upper stories feature a silvery chrome color.
Her design has been described as masculine and muscular in the past, with a modern approach to traditional yacht layout that appears especially striking.
She has a large aluminum superstructure and a total of four decks. Guests have their choice of two helicopter landing pads, one located on the bow of the vessel and the other on the top deck.
The latter is equipped with a retractable helicopter hangar which can be extended to cover a small aircraft if needed.
This is a unique feature that cannot be found in very many other superyachts. It’s yet another example of the high levels of privacy that this yacht offers for its anonymous owners.
It goes without saying that a modern yacht such as CRESCENT is equipped with state-of-the-art zero-speed stabilizers.
On the lower aft deck, she has a generous beach club area with a large swimming platform and an adjacent pool.
However, unlike many other superyachts, this area cannot be closed off when the vessel is underway.
At night CRESCENT is illuminated by an advanced underwater lighting system that was tailor-made for the yacht. She carries at least three tenders, although their make and type are not known.

Somnio will become the world’s largest superyacht when she hits the seas in mid-2024. Winch Design
The build, which is expected to cost in the ballpark of $600 million, will be carried out by Norwegian yard Vard under the watchful eye of Somnio co-founder Captain Erik Bredhe. Bredhe previously helmed The World , another epic residential vessel, though says Somnio will better mirror the intimacy of a private yacht.
“ The World has been a phenomenal success, though it is time for true superyacht co-ownership,” Bredhe said in a statement.
The exclusive condos, which start from $11.2 million, will be available by invitation or referral only, and the identity of each new owner will remain a “tightly guarded secret.” In addition to that privacy, those on board will live in the lap of luxury.
Each apartment is fully customizable and can be outfitted with multiple cabins, plus a well-appointed kitchen, gym, library and walk-in wardrobe. They will also offer indoor/outdoor dining spaces for entertaining.
Somnio is jam-packed with luxury amenities. Winch Design
On top of that, Somnio comes with pinch-yourself shared amenities. Owners will have access to a spectacular 10,000-bottle wine cellar and tasting room, along with a spate of restaurants and bars. A highlight is the lounge in the ship’s bow, which will reportedly offer “spectacular views” while under sail. Elsewhere, there’s a sprawling beach club complete with water-sports facilities as well as myriad pools on the main deck.
Naturally, there is a full concierge service to cater to your needs on land and at sea. There is also world-class medical care available onboard to keep the crew and residents safe and healthy.
As for exploration, Somnio is equipped to travel to all four corners of the globe, from short stints in the Mediterranean to expeditions in Antarctica.
“Somnio will be the only residential superyacht in the world and has been designed to exacting standards that are commensurate with a life of opportunity,” Bredhe adds. “Owners will share a truly unique lifestyle at sea, with a hand-picked crew and a never-ending global itinerary of carefully selected destinations and experiences befitting a yacht of this nature.”
Somnio will be equipped with advanced research equipment that scientists and marine experts will use to explore the various ocean environments. The scientists will also regularly update owners on pressing environmental and philanthropic issues.

Now You Can Actually Live Aboard the World’s Largest Superyacht
By Dan Avery
Super-prime living doesn’t have to be relegated to dry land anymore: Developers have launched sales for apartments aboard the world’s largest yacht, offering a select 39 luxury condos starting at $11.2 million. Expected to launch in mid-2024, the 730-foot superyacht Somnio (from the Latin for “to dream”) will sail the “four corners of the globe,” per a press release, including excursions to New York, the Mediterranean, the South Pacific, and even Antarctica.
London’s Winch Design and Tillberg Design of Sweden are collaborating on the architecture of what’s being called “the world’s first yacht liner,” currently under construction in Norway. Condominiums will be spaced out across six decks, and, while the exact features of each unit will vary based on the owners’ needs, options include a personal kitchen, library, gym, and alfresco dining.
Bids to own units on the superyacht will be conducted on an invitation-only basis.
Owners will also have access to amenities that include an onboard beach club, numerous restaurants and bars, a 10,000-bottle wine cellar and tasting room, and concierge service for both on-ship and land-based needs.
Don’t pack your bags yet: Bids on the units will be taken by invitation only. A little bit longer than two football fields and weighing nearly 37,000 tons, Somnio will be the largest yacht on earth in both length and volume. (The current title-holder is the 590-foot Azzam, owned by the royal family of Abu Dhabi.)
At a cost approaching $600 million, the auspicious project is being led by Carl Le Souef, founder of the skin-care company Private Formula International and the sustainable tech company Somnio Global. As such, the ship will incorporate clean-engine technology and will house equipment for marine scientists to conduct research. In addition, experts will be available to update owners on challenges and solutions to global environmental issues.
Amenities include an onboard beach club, numerous restaurants and bars, a 10,000-bottle wine cellar and tasting room, and concierge service for both on-ship and land-based needs.
Helming Somnio is Captain Erik Bredhe, master of MS The World, the first residential cruise ship. “ The World has been a phenomenal success, though it is time for true superyacht co-ownership,” Bredhe said in a statement. “ Somnio will be the only residential superyacht in the world and has been designed to exacting standards that are commensurate with a life of opportunity. Owners will share a truly unique lifestyle at sea, with a hand-picked crew and a never-ending global itinerary of carefully selected destinations and experiences befitting a yacht of this nature.”
In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, developers say the ship will have strict health protocols in place, and owners will have access to “world-class medical care.” After sinking like a stone in 2020, yacht sales have rebounded this year, with more than 380 transactions reported since January, according to SuperYacht Times .

Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to charter in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).
These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.

The most powerful Lexus ever is actually a $5 million yacht
The 2,000 horsepower, 68-foot long yacht accommodates 15 people and has six beds.
It seems Lexus has decided to leave us landlubbers behind and take to the seas . The auto maker just unveiled its new flagship: a 2,000 horsepower, 68-foot long yacht with a 1,849-gallon fuel tank, accommodations for 15 people and six beds.
The Lexus LY 680 (of course LY stands for Luxury Yacht) is the next generation of Lexus’ foray into big ol’ boats that started with the LY 650 back in 2018 , according to a release from Toyota . If you’re the kind of person who has the means for a Lexus LY 680, be prepared to fork over about $5.1 million. There’s also the small caveat that you’ve got to be in Japan to order one through Toyota Marine, Automotive News reports. I know, I know. That’s tough to hear.
Outside the LY 680 is wrapped in a very cool copper and silver paint scheme. It actually looks very similar to the rose gold color you can get on the Lexus LC500 . It’s quite sleek-looking, as far as yachts go. Inside is where the real good stuff is. You’ll find all sorts of lounge sofas, high-gloss paneling and other appointments designed by Lexus with the help of Italian styling company Nuvolari Lendard, according to AutoNews .
The second deck of the LY 680 (called the flybridge by nautically-inclined folks ) has apparently been extended by about 4.5 feet, and it features a lounge sofa and a grill. Lexus also extended the swimming platform by about 2.3 feet. If I had to guess, that’s probably where a good chunk of the three feet it grew over the LY 650 came from.
It should be noted, the boat itself won’t actually be built by Lexus . The Japanese automaker is outsourcing that job to a Taiwanese company called Horizon Group. Lexus says that the manufacturer has a “reputation for its advanced technological capabilities which have been honed through the construction of superyachts .
Powering the LY 680 is a pair of 12.8-liter straight-six diesel engines supplied by Volvo, according to Lexus. In their base configuration, the engines make a combined 1,600 horsepower. However, if that’s not enough for you, feel free to up the power to 1,000 horsepower each. That’s right baby. This is a 2,000-horsepower boat.
Here’s a little more from Lexus on what the LY 680 is all about:
Lexus aims to be a luxury lifestyle brand and the flagship Luxury Yacht is the embodiment of the Lexus design philosophy “Crafted.” The LY 680 expresses this philosophy by thoroughly paying attention to every single detail, in order to exceed customers’ expectations and create a unique experience that stimulates their senses, even while at sea. The concept for the Luxury Yacht is “to feel like a hideout in the middle of the sea, providing a space where discerning customers can feel free and at ease.” The exterior embodies the Lexus design philosophy of L-finesse, and the interior has been meticulously crafted down to the smallest details to provide a comfortable living space. In terms of performance, Lexus aims for confidence inspiring cruising performance, offering stable maneuverability, excellent ride comfort, and quietness.
Toyota first entered the boat business back in 1997, and it has sold nearly 1,100 boats since then, but only some have made it to the U.S. market, according to Automotive News .
