Historical:

April 24, 1911, the New York Times recorded Elena’s launch: “The new steel racing yacht Elena, built for former Commodore Morton F Plant of the New York Yacht Club, went down the marine railway at the Herreshoff works to water today to the accompaniment of strains of orchestral music and the cheers of a score of the owner’s personal friends from New York. The Elena is named for Queen Helena of Italy. She is 135ft long overall and 96ft on the waterline, with a beam of 27ft 6in and 17ft draft.”

In the fall of 1910 Morton Plant placed an order with the Herreshoff Construction Company for a new yacht. Plant’s design request was simple, “Build me a schooner that can win!” and so the choice was made to copy, and where possible, improve upon the design of the S/Y Westward that Herreshoff had built the year before. The Westward was another benchmark yacht that swept the field at every race she took part in her first year racing and, with continued success, became one of the most famous and successful racing schooners of all time.

Above the waterline, Elena and Westward were identical. However, below the waterline, Elena was given a slightly fuller keel that lowered her center of ballast and improved her windward ability.

Elena was launched the following season (1911) and soon thereafter both yachts were going head-to-head in racing up and down the blustery Eastern Coast of the United States. Like her sister the year before, Elena immediately began winning the majority of her races against the best of the American schooner fleet, several of which included competing against the Westward.

After a successful 17 year racing season and cruising in American waters with distinguished owners such as Cornelius Vanderbilt and William B. Bell, it wasn’t until 1928 when Elena’s greatest moment of glory came during the King’s Cup Trans-Atlantic Race from New York to Santander, Spain. Elena won the race outright.

The Rebirth

To resurrect this maritime legend, today’s engineers and designers not only had hundreds of hand-drawn plans donated by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, MA. but were also provided with the resources of Herreshoff Design Office located in Bristol, RI which is overseen by Halsey Herreshoff, the grandson of Nathaniel Greene Herreshoff ’s.

In addition to the information provided by MIT and the Herreshoff Design Office, historic images of Elena were painstakingly studied to ensure that every detail was replicated to near perfection. These details include her towering wooden masts and sail plan identical in dimensions to the original. Her beautiful classic styled interior will be like a journey back in time.

Elena’s Rig

Elena’s original rigging plan, as drawn by Herreshoff in 1911, has been tested through a purpose-made computer program, for Brasker masts and spars. Surprisingly the results confirmed that despite nearly 100 years of developments in rigging design the Wizard of Bristol’s original concept could not be improved upon in both strength and lightness. After calculating hundreds of situations in every conceivable weather circumstance and applying those circumstances to every possible sail combination, the modeling results could only substantiate but not improve on his calculations. Therefore all the spars will be built to Herreshoff ’s original specifications.

Elena’s lower spars and booms will be constructed of carefully selected Oregon Pine. Her upper masts, gaff ’s, jackyards and spinnaker boom will be constructed of the finest quality Alaskan Sitka Spruce. New to Elena will be the booms that will be constructed of 16 staves instead of the more customary eight, giving a much stiffer and lighter boom despite thinner wall thicknesses. Given today’s modern technology to improve upon past designs, Herreshoff ’s original design specifications truly stand the test of time.

Elena of London is a stunning replica of a classic racing schooner. Built in 2009 by Factoria Naval Marin, this sailing yacht is a masterpiece of traditional craftsmanship and modern engineering. The original Elena was designed in 1910 by the legendary naval architect “the wizzard of Bristal,” Nathaniel Herreshoff for a wealthy American businessman named Morton F. Plant. She quickly gained a reputation as one of the fastest racing schooners of her time, winning numerous regattas and breaking several speed records.

On deck, Elena of London is a sight to behold, with her towering masts, vast sails, and gleaming varnish. Overall, Elena of London is a stunning example of a classic racing schooner, with all the modern amenities you need for a comfortable and luxurious sailing experience.

Specifications

Five Super-Schooners to Compete at the Inaugural Capri Classica

Created by the International Schooner Association in conjunction with the International Maxi Association, the first edition of Capri Classica is exclusively for classic schooners. Unlike other classic sailing events, it will play to the strengths of these giant maritime Stradivarii as well as celebrating the skills required of their crews and captains to race them.

Capri Classica is organised by the Circolo Remo e Vela Italia (CRVI), the Yacht Club of Capri (YCC), the International Schooner Association (ISA); with the cooperation and support of the International Maxi Association (IMA) and Associazione Italiana Vele d'Epoca (AIVE), in cooperation with Porto Turistico di Capri (PTC).

This will be only the second time this group of classic multi-masted giants have gathered together since the 40th Régates Royales de Cannes, last September. It was then that their owners, plus those or their representatives from five other famous historic schooners gathered on board Puritan to found the International Schooner Association .

While the schooner class at Régates Royales de Cannes was won by the largest of the five, Elena of London, she, plus Puritan and Orianda are regular competitors on the Mediterranean classic circuit. The more widely travelled Mariette of 1915 is an occasional visitor and Naema only joined the circuit for the first time in 2016.

Among the unique schooner-orientated features of Capri Classica, perhaps most unusual will be the starts. While most modern yacht races start with boats jostling for position sailing to windward on a short line, at Capri Classica some races will resort to the ancient practice of starting at anchor with sails down. This was commonplace in schooner racing in the 19th century and even featured in early editions of the America's Cup, an event won by schooners up until 1876.

Starting from anchor will also be a natural handicap, as the biggest yachts could take up to 30 minutes to get underway, but will be faster under sail than the smaller yachts that could weigh anchor and be sailing in as little as 10 minutes.

Pandolfi continues: "The aim is to demonstrate that these schooners are not only beautiful. The winner will be the one who is most competent not just in getting off the start line quickly, but using the skills required for racing a schooner, skills that would otherwise be lost."

Single races will be held each day on courses which will be schooner-friendly, given that these yachts all herald from an era when the reigning principle was famously "gentlemen don't go to windward". With this in mind, the PRO will be able to choose from a variety of courses according to the wind direction and strength. If there is adequate wind, these are likely to be 30-40 miles long for example across the Bay of Naples to Ischia or Naples or around to the south of the Sorrento Peninsula and back to a finish line off Capri's Marina Grande. "They won't be windward-leewards," states Pandolfi.

While Capri Classica is being hosted in Marina Grande, it will conclude in Marina Piccola on Capri's south side. On Saturday 11th May the event will conclude with a pursuit race where the finish line will be off the Faraglioni rocks. Seeing the five schooners arriving in unison by Capri's famous trio of weather-beaten stacks will be a photographer's dream.
