They are available in a wide variety of deck layouts, including center-consoles, dual-consoles, and even pilothouse and express variants.

Big Picture

The large deck area of a catamaran enables many large underdeck storage lockers and insulated fish boxes in the sponsons. This gives anglers ample room for gear and the day’s catch. The catamaran’s stability, fishability, and smooth ride in rough seas make it attractive to anglers as well as day-cruisers. A center-console version adds 360 degrees of angler access to the rail. With the dual-console design, generous seating behind a beam-to-beam windshield makes for a great family fishing-friendly setup.

Live bait is one of the most popular types of fishing in virtually every coastal zone. To do it successfully requires optimal water capacity and proper flow. The minimum size of the outflow water plumbing should be twice the size of the inflow. The plumbing should have a drain at the bottom to shed scales at the end of the day, as well as a drain at the top of the well to adjust capacity and allow overflow. Above-deck transom-mounted wells should fully flood to the lids when running to keep baits from getting beat up.

Tip: A sump box with multiple pumps in case a pump fails is the best setup for first-rate livewells. Conveniently located inflow and outflow valves make it easy to optimize the flow without tiring your bait from swimming too much in the well.

Rod Storage

Having enough rod holders is essential to be successful for opportunity fishing. Look for vertical rod storage along the console and across the back of the T-top. Many models also have rod holders along the outboard transom wall. Having plenty of gunwale rod holders for drift- and kite-fishing is helpful.

Tip: Placing adjustable swivel rod holders by Gemlux makes deep-dropping, lure-fishing and drifting even easier because they allow your rods to face the direction the baits are fishing, yet they can be swiveled back to keep rods from sticking out of the boat while running and docking.

Manufacturers often offer multiple choices for horsepower, but whatever the choice, the engines must come in pairs. For example, you might order twin outboards (one for each sponson) or four outboards (two for each sponson), but single- or triple-outboard configurations are not common on a cat. Optimal selection should be made based on user load, weight of the boat, ride comfort , performance desires, and best case for resale. It’s a rare day when you can run wide open, but having more horsepower gives better torque at slower speeds and thus better control. Running larger engines slower gives better fuel efficiency too.

Tip: When possible, choose the highest horsepower offered because it typically leads to a better resale value with a shorter sales cycle.

Power steering from engine manufacturer Optimus or SeaStar is essential with the higher horsepower required for larger boats, and it makes installing and operating the upper station in a tower far more practical and comfortable.

With the power demands of electronics, livewell pumps, stereo amps and more, it is wise to have at least two house batteries, and for larger boats, a third or fourth with a multibank charger for dockside. Each engine should have its own dedicated battery as well.

Electronics

Typically choosing the largest screen or multiple screens that will fit on the console is best-case scenario for ease of use, ergonomics, and visibility. VHF radios, stereo controller, and equipment switches for lighting, pumps, and accessories should all be integrated with greatest visibility and ease of operator reach.

A Tale of Two Hulls

A catamaran rides on pair of hulls, or sponsons, each thinner and sharper than that of a similarly sized monohull boat. The narrow sponsons of the cat tend to slice easily through water to deliver a smooth ride, even in rough seas. At the same time, with the sponsons positioned out to the sides of the boat, cats tend to roll less, thus providing great stability to enhance crew comfort, security and safety. However, cats tend to corner more flatly than a monohull, and some hulls (but not all) tend to lean outward versus inward during a turn.

Experts Say

Newer designs such as Invincible’s Morelli and Melvin-designed semi-asymmetrical sponsons eliminate some of the negatives of the cat design, such as “sneezing,” where water sprays out the front of the boat when hitting a wave. They’ve also controlled the uncomfortable “outboard lean” sensation common in older designs when in a turn. Once transitioned to a catamaran, many become true believers and preach the benefits of the design.

I recall one trip out of Key West, Florida, aboard an Invincible 40 Cat with four 350 hp outboards to the Dry Tortugas. It was a 60-mile run, and we made it there in 70 minutes. Some include a performance package that you can use to make it in a racing sailboat. Either way, you can safely beach it since it has a hydraulic lifting centerboard.

The Lagoon 39 has very similar features compared to other Lagoon models. However, the mast and center of buoyancy are different since the hulls are further apart.

For a 38.3 foot sailboat, some sailors might find it intimidating to beach one of these. Luckily this is a catamaran, which is easy to beach and has no risk of damaging your boat if you do it correctly.

Nautitech 40

Another good size catamaran right at 40 feet is the Nautitech 40 . The fractional sloop and open design is a great set of features that many gravitate to when looking for a sailboat.

For the perfect balance of speed and comfort, this one is up there with the best. The biggest difference between the Nautitech 40 and other competing catamarans is that it uses foam composite instead of balsa cores, which saves a ton of weight. Beaching this catamaran is easy, especially with its four foot draft.

The Hobie 16 is an excellent sailboat that is trailerable, fun, and can be beached. This boat’s design debuted in 1969 and offers one of the best options for getting your feet wet with a catamaran.

With its kick up rudders and a mix between fiberglass and foam hulls, you should have no problems beaching it. If you are wanting to sail with a companion for the day or want to sail by yourself, the Hobie 16 is a great size to do either one.

The Hunter 15 provides simplicity when you need it, whether you are an expert or newbie to sailing. The fiberglass hull and foam floatation, it is a very sturdy sailboat for its size.

With its stability in addition to its kick up rudder, you can safely take this one to the beach to explore your surroundings. They also make this one in an 18 footer for those that want a little more room.

Montgomery 17

A boat that has surprised many in the pocket cruiser category is the Montgomery 17 . The masthead sloop and swing keel make it a unique sailboat for around 18 feet.

When the swing keel is up, the boat is just shy of two feet max on the draft. This allows you to beach it or explore shallow waters with ease. They also make these in 15 and 23 foot editions, whether you want more or less space.

Flying Scot

This 19 footer is one of the most popular daysailers of all time, dating back to 1957. The sloop rigged design remains popular to this day and has been competitively raced in over 130 fleets across the U.S.

When the centerboard is up, the boat glides gracefully at just eight inches and can be beached or used in shallow water. Many have used this boat to sleep on with some accommodations, even though it was designed to be a daysailer.

WindRider 10

The Wind Rider 10 is a trimaran that is fast, stable, and has an extremely low draft. This particular model joins the likes of other Wind Riders, like the 16 and 17, but is not as large for those wanting to have something smaller.

The six inch draft and weight of about 125 pounds makes it easy to transport and beach. The beauty of this trimaran is that you can go anywhere you want without having to worry about size.

What Does Beaching a Boat Mean?

Beaching a boat is when a sailor decides to park their boat on the beach in the event that they do not have a marina to tie off to or if they want to explore the area. There are two ways to beach your boat, which is stranded or partially stranded.

When stranded, the boat is completely out of the water. This allows for repairs to be made on the hull or to inspect it periodically if you travel full time with it.

As for partially stranded, this means the boat is still in the water but the majority of the bow is in the sand. This allows you to take a break from traveling or to go ashore for a while. Both beaching methods have their advantages depending on why you need them at that moment.

Compatible Boat Types for Beaching

The lowest section of your boat needs to be tough if you want to beach it. This needs to be a strong material because you are hitting against something firm every time you are wanting to stop your boat.

If the lowest part of your boat has a propeller, rudder, or anything that sticks out too low, it is not a good candidate for beaching. This is why it is important to know what is underneath your boat and what it is made of.

Fixed keels usually have a better chance at standing up to the wear and tear of beaching since they are made with the hull. They are more sturdy and provide stability while beaching.

Full keels, twin keels, multi-hulled boats, and a few varieties of bulb or wing keels are good candidates for beaching. Doing your research based on what boat you have is the most important thing before attempting to beach.

Boat Types to Avoid Beaching

A boat with dagger boards is not quite strong enough to handle beaching. Since the keels are not fixed, it might cause damage if it has any pressure in the wrong direction.

If your boat has skegs, it might be wise to avoid beaching. If your boat takes on a wave and slightly gets lifted while in shallow water, the chance of damaging the rudder is much higher when the boat comes back down and there is no water to stop it.

Tips for Beaching Your Sailboat

If you are curious about beaching your sailboat, you are not alone. Most likely you have seen other sailors do it or have seen pictures online showing boats of all shapes and sizes tackle this feat.

The problem is that beaching your boat is not good, especially if you are rough on your boat in the process. However, when done properly, beaching your boat will not harm anything.

Pick Flat Areas

When you want to beach your boat, you have to choose a section that is relatively flat. While this sounds like common sense, it should always be your first choice when given the opportunity.

It is also important to note that you do not want a lot of rocks or debris in your way. If you can safely navigate to the shore without anything potentially stopping you underneath, that is your best bet.

Position the Boat

You will need to take into account your environment while trying to beach your boat. The wind and ranges are going to act a bit differently closer to shore than they are in deeper waters.

When positioning your boat to the beach, you have to have the same mentality as if you were trying to park it in a packed marina. Paying attention to your surroundings is going to be key.

Slow Speeds and Kill the Engine

If the conditions allow you to safely drift to the beach, allow enough momentum to carry you there at a nice pace. After that, you should turn off the engine or propeller in case you hit shallow water faster than you anticipate.

If you hit the beach a little harder than you would have liked, it could potentially damage your prop or hull. Navigating using slow speeds and turning off the prop will stop it from trying to turn in the sand.

Make Sure You Have Good Conditions

Unless you are in an emergency, you should wait for the right time to beach your boat. If the wind and waves are not in the best place, you should consider waiting it out. Your environment does not have to be completely perfect, but it would be best to have desirable conditions while trying to beach your boat.

Use a Dinghy if Needed

The whole purpose of beaching your boat is that you can park it on shore and then simply get out of your boat. However, there are times when the tide comes in or the water is extremely shallow for a section of the beach.

During this time, you might have to consider walking a bit until you get where you want to be or use an inflatable dinghy to help you out the rest of the way. In addition, the dinghy can be used to help deploy your anchors on your main boat.

Dangers of Beaching Improperly

Beaching is a great way to explore shallow waters or to hit up a nice looking area. There are plenty of reasons to beach your boat. However, there are plenty of dangers associated with beaching that you need to be aware of.

Being Stuck

This happens a lot more than you would think, especially when waves or the conditions change while you are beached. Waves can carry your boat further into the beach where you cannot move it.

If this is the case, you would have to try and pull or push it out by hand or wait for the water to come back to you. This could potentially damage your boat too.

Damaging Your Boat

If you get stuck, the dangers of damaging your boat go up. In addition, you could damage your boat before the chance of getting stuck even occurs.

Over time, you are effectively rubbing the hull into sandpaper. This means you will need to periodically check your hull out to make sure it is not wearing down too fast.

Failure to locate rocks or anything in the water beforehand is going to ensure your boat is damaged. If you damage your hull, you definitely would have to beach it in order to make repairs.

You could also mess up the prop, rudder, or whatever you have that sticks out lower than the boat. These delicate, but essential parts of your boat do not need to be beaten up.

Losing Your Boat

If you do not beach your boat properly, there is a chance you could lose your boat. This is why picking a flat surface and checking out your boat after you beach is important.

If you beach your boat onto a rocky surface, there is a good chance that the material is not supported underneath. This could potentially wiggle your boat loose or mess with your anchor. Taking your time while beaching your boat is crucial to making sure your boat does not take off anywhere.

What is a Beach Catamaran?

What is a beach catamaran? I saw this question while I was reading a sailing post today. I didn’t know what a beach catamaran was! So I looked it up. This is what a beach catamaran is.

A Beach Catamaran, commonly called a “beachcat,” is a light, two-hulled vessel that can be shoved onto the beach when not in use, then pushed back into the ocean when it’s time to sail. Their defining factor is just that – they can be beached on the sand, and re-launched into the surf.

Common Characteristics of Beach Catamarans

Beach cats have a number of characteristics in common. They have two hulls, of course, because they are catamarans. Beach cats are relatively very light for their size. Only one or two people can launch a beach cat.

Beach cats don’t have a solid central floor. Instead, a rigid trampoline material, bridges the open area between the hulls and their supports. They usually have removable rudders. Sailors move the rudders just before beaching to avoid damaging them.

For the same reason, they don’t have keels. As a result, most beach cats have daggerboards . These are essentially removable keels that slide between the hulls. This gives them better stability in wind and faster speed.

People usually transport their beach cats to the water. For this reason, they have fittings that make them easy to assemble and disassemble quickly.

Racing Beach Catamarans

Most people race their beach catamarans, which can be very fast, up to 20 knots. To reach these speeds, the racing experience often becomes physical. This often means sailing with one hull out of the water in high winds.

What is the Best Beach Catamaran for Long-Distance?

While there are many beach catamarans on the water, the Hobie Cat has unquestionably had the best success and is quite popular. The Hobie 16 is the best selling model and is a rather iconic brand among beachcat fans.

The winners of the race from Port Townsend, Washington to Ketchikan, Alaska, called the Race To Alaska, or R2AK for short. This is a 750-mile voyage, a little bit longer than a circumnavigation of Vancouver Island.

Besides the Hobie 16 , there are a few other popular beach cats. Team FreeBurd, sailed the race in an ARC-22 catamaran. The Hobie Getaway , at 17 feet (5.1 meters) in length, has a built-in cooler and storage in both hulls.

Beaching a Catamaran is Not the Same

Beaching a catamaran is the practice of using a beach as an improvised marina. You can do this in two ways. Entirely stranded on the beach without water around the hulls. Partially stranded with only the bows on the beach.

Conclusions

Beach catamarans are fun boats and a very physical experience for both sailor and their boat. People sail their beach cats for the physical experience. These boats have been around for a long time. This was a great experience. This sail is very calm and relaxing and a completely different experience from the trade wind sails, where you expect to get tossed around and get wet. Setting records

Designed under the creative genius of the internationally acclaimed naval architect VPLP Design , Mousetrap was crafted as a bespoke carbon composite project by the esteemed French shipyard JFA Yachts . Originating from the visionary dreams of her owner, who actively spearheaded the entire project, she has earned her title as the world's largest carbon fibre sailing catamaran. Notably, Mousetrap 's design incorporates a carbon fibre arch supporting the mast, eliminating the need for posts in the main saloon and enhancing the visual expanse of the space. Furthermore, the yacht's light displacement, a result of her carbon fibre construction, enhances performance, and her hydraulic winches and expansive gennaker enable her to cruise at speed.

Stability at speed

Accommodating nine guests across four luxurious staterooms, Mousetrap boasts expansive open living spaces, rivalling those of larger motor or sailing yachts, with uninterrupted views stretching from the aft cockpit to the main saloon. The foredeck plays host to a custom six-person Jacuzzi, complemented by inviting lounging areas and a discreetly concealed ladder for easy access to the water. A large flybridge and an expansive aft deck, spanning the entire 14-metre beam, blend indoor and outdoor living, providing generous sheltered spaces for dining and lounging. The versatile main saloon accommodates relaxation, dining and work with its wraparound sofa, central bar, formal dining table and office area. With stability as a hallmark, Mousetrap 's sail is flat 90 per cent of the time, ensuring a smooth and comfortable journey.

A first-hand account from Fraser broker Georges Bourgoignie narrates the extraordinary stability, speed and comfort experienced during a memorable sail from Antigua to the Cayman Islands. Amidst a day's work in the saloon, whilst sailing at 15 to 20 knots with winds hovering between 20 to 25 knots, he recalls how stable the boat felt when sitting with a latte that was as steady as can be. “With no heel, little noise and complete comfort, it was unlike anything I have ever experienced before in my many years of sailing monohulls,” he says. “You’d be amazed at the stability, speed and comfort that a large catamaran affords you.”

As good as new

Originally constructed in 2012, Mousetrap had an extensive refit project from 2021 to 2023 and the owner spared no expense in bringing her back to good-as-new condition. The owner's dedication, coupled with the expertise of a highly knowledgeable crew and substantial capital investment, saw a spectrum of enhancements during the project, from integrating state-of-the-art machinery to renewing sails and meticulous servicing of the mast and rigging. The rejuvenation also extended to installing new teak decks, a major paint job and the overall refinishing of all areas.

For superyacht shoppers, the Palm Beach International Boat Show, kicking off its four-day run this week, is set to break records with more than 60 yachts over 100 feet long on display. Last year was also a banner year for superyachts at the show.

Headliners will include the likes of the 295-foot Corsair Nero , the 278-foot Victorious by AKYacht, the 230-foot Turquoise-built Talisman C , and 213-foot Benetti Triumph among brokerage yachts, and in new yachts, the 113-foot Ocean Alexander Puro 35 is making its world debut.

There are so many gleaming white vessels over 100 feet, in fact, that the fleet will be split between the Palm Harbor Marina at the main show site on the downtown West Palm Beach waterfront and the Safe Harbor Rybovich Marina two miles north.

Now in its 42nd year, PBIBS will also showcase hundreds of models of dayboats, cruisers, and fishing boats, as well as marine accessories. Running from this Thursday through Sunday, the show coincides with the Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary art show, a fortuitous opportunity for yacht owners wanting to add new art to their collections.

Here are 10 must-see boats at this year’s show.

Corsair Yachts ‘Nero’

The undisputed star of this year’s Palm Beach show? That would be the 295-foot, classically styled superyacht Nero , built in 2007 and inspired by American financier J.P. Morgan’s legendary 1930s steamer Corsair IV . Nero ‘s attendance at PBIBS marks its return to the charter market after an extensive refit in 2021. Now better than new, the boat is being managed by Burgess. With weekly charter rates from $497,000, the vessel offers five-star accommodations for 12 guests in six cabins, with pampering from a crew of 20. Part of the refit included a full interior refresh by Italian interior designer Laura Pomponi, plus a major focus on wellness. That meant the construction of a new, state-of-the-art gym and spa, the assistance of a certified onboard trainer, a masseuse and beautician. After PBIBS, Nero will spend the winter in the Caribbean before returning to the Med for the summer season.

Ocean Alexander Puro 35P

Ocean Alexander is debuting the first of its new Puro superyacht series at PBIBS. The 113-foot Puro 35P comes from the drawing board of Italian designer Giorgio M. Cassetta and is a step back from the polarizing lines of OA’s recent Revolution and Explorer series with their bold, vertical bow designs. Aimed at long-distance cruising, the 35P can carry over 5,000 gallons of fuel and is powered by twin 2,000 hp MAN V12s for a 24-knot top speed. Twin 55kW Kohler generators can also keep the yacht powered at anchor for long periods. Other standout features include extensive glazing in the chiseled fiberglass hull, a forward deck plunge pool, and spacious accommodations for 10 guests.

Think of it as the “starter” Sirena. Aimed at a younger demographic, the Turkish builder’s brand-new Sirena 48 is making its U.S. debut at PBIBS after a global reveal at last fall’s Cannes boat show. Such is its appeal that 27 hulls have already been sold, with 13 of the orders coming from North America. Looking like a scaled-down version of Sirena’s popular 58, its distinctive, trawler-style lines are from Argentinian designer Germán Frers. With more interior space than a typical 48-footer, the yacht offers three staterooms—plus a crew cabin—a spacious, light-filled salon, a large cockpit, an oversized flybridge, and a vast forward social area. Take your pick from twin 550 hp Cummins QSB, or 670 hp Volvo D11 turbo diesels. Or the builder is also offering hybrid power with twin 285 hp electric motors charged up by variable-speed generators that are good for a 30-mile battery-only range.

Feadship ‘Olympus’

Picture purchasing a classic 180-foot Feadship superyacht, and then getting a $10 million bill for a major refit. That was the case with Olympus , built by the Dutch masters at Feadship in 1996 to a design by Britain’s Andrew Winch and the celebrated naval architect Frits De Voogt. Sold in 2022, the new owner sent it to the Monaco Marine refit center in La Ciotat, France for a major makeover. It included overhauling the 2,600 hp Caterpillar engines and generators, repairs to the structure, substantial upgrades to the guest areas and crew quarters, and new paint throughout. With the work completed just last year, the vessel is said to be in mint condition. Offered jointly by brokers Fraser and Edmiston, Olympus has an asking price of $28.5 million. With accommodations for 16 guests in eight cabins, the boat’s highlights include two primary suites, tropical-spec air conditioning, and Palm Beach-chic decor.

Benetti ‘Triumph’

Italian yachting powerhouse Benetti is showing off its superyacht-building skills with the 213-foot Triumph . Delivered in 2021, this Giorgio M. Cassetta-designed steel-and-aluminum world girder features six decks, a 1,400-square-foot primary suite with outdoor terrace and adjoining lounge, a 750-square-foot beach club, and a touch-and-go helipad. What sets Triumph apart, however, is its lavish interior furnishings put together by the owner along with Benetti Interior Style and Monaco-based Green & Mingarelli Design. It includes pieces by French glassmaker Lalique, marble from Marfil, Statuario and Armani, furs, silk and wool carpets, plus a collection of cool black-and-white wildlife photographs by British fine art photographer David Yarrow. The pièce de résistance? That would be the owner’s Triumph Bonneville motorcycle displayed in the salon.

Fjord 39 XP/XL

Germany’s Fjord Yachts, part of the Hanse Group, has a new 39-foot day boat that it’s unveiling at the Palm Beach show. The 39 XP and XL keep all the bold design cues of the bigger Fjord 41 XP and XL, like a big, open cockpit, walkaround center console, vertical bow, mile-high windshield and stretched hardtop. As for the differences between the XP and XL, it’s all about power. The XL comes with a choice of twin 320hp Volvo D4 diesels, or bigger 440 hp D6 versions, both with Volvo stern drives. Likely more appealing to U.S. buyers will be the XP powered by twin 400 hp Mercury Verado V10 outboards giving a 50-knot top speed. Pricing starts at around $500,000.

Turquoise ‘Talisman C’

Chandeliers don’t come more dramatic than this. Cascading down the central spiral staircase of the Turkish-built, 231-foot superyacht Talisman C , this jaw-dropping piece of art comprises an array of multi-colored glass balls threaded on stainless-steel rods and illuminated by hanging fiber-optic strands. It’s the creation of Prague-based Crystal Caviar and is one of a number of glass installations on this sleek, low-profile superyacht. Built in 2011 by the Proteksan Turquoise shipyard, Talisman C was designed inside and out by London-based studio H2 Yacht Design, with naval architecture by Italy’s Hydro Tec. With cabins for 12 guests, one of its highlights is a huge primary suite, which boasts more crystal chandeliers and a private library. Twin 2,447 hp Caterpillar diesels give a top speed of 18 knots and a transatlantic range of 7,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. It’s listed with Burgess for $59.9 million.

Sanlorenzo 44 ‘Kamakasa’

Delivered in 2020 and sold to a new buyer just last August, the 146-foot Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy Kamakasa will be for sale at PBIBS. The asking price, through the Italian Yacht Group, is $23.75 million. Lack of use might also be the issue here; the yacht’s twin 2,600 hp MTU V16 diesels have a mere 289 hours on the clock. Built in aluminum to a design by Rome-based Zuccon International Project, Kamakasa was the second hull in the Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy series. One of the top features is a primary suite that spans three levels and almost 1,600 square feet; it also comes with a private Jacuzzi, separate bathrooms, a walk-in closet, and a private study. The yacht’s lightweight construction and MTU power combine to deliver an impressive 20-knot top speed.

Bahama 41 GT2

As ultimate, reel-’em-in, fishing center consoles go, the Bahama 41 from West Palm Beach-based Bahama Boat Works is as hard-core as they come. But when owners kept asking for a little more comfort for the family, the builder responded. The result is the brand-new flagship 41 GT debuting at PBIBS. While the proven, wave-slicing hull stays the same, the cockpit layout is new. In place of the single bench seat, there are now three-across bucket seats with a second row behind. The wider console now has space for a pair of 22-inch Garmin screens, while the new extended hardtop features sun shades and even a rain shower. Outboard choices stay the same with either twin Mercury V12 600s, or four 400 hp Mercury V10s, good for a 65-knot-plus top speed. Pricing is from around $920,000.

Heesen ‘Book Ends’

Launched in 2022, this 164-foot Heesen is part of the Book Ends collection, owned by an American couple who have had more than 18 yachts with the same name. The exterior design of this Heesen was by Omega Architects, while Dutch studio Van Oossanen did the naval architecture. The yacht is part of Heesen’s fast cruising series, which is more efficient than other vessels its size, and can reach 23 knots at full speed with its MTU 16V 4000 M65L engines. The yacht is listed through Ocean Independence for 42 million Euro, or about $45.7 million.
