How To Add A Swim Platform And Ladder To Your Boat

A swim step and boarding ladder combo makes getting back aboard easier and safer. Here's how to do this simple weekend project.

We do a fair amount of swimming and snorkeling from our outboard-powered 20-foot center-console and wanted more than the portable sport diver-style ladder that came with the boat to allow easy access to and from the water. While there are many quality boarding ladders on the market, after researching several styles of boarding ladders and combination swim platform/boarding ladders, we decided on a popular model from Garelick EEz-In that includes an integrated small platform with a telescoping ladder.

Garelick offers models featuring one or two steps, which can be stowed either on top or below the platform, and all the stainless-steel hardware for assembling the platform and mounting the ladders is included. The company's 19000 series of transom boarding ladders is designed for DIY installation on either side of an outboard or sterndrive engine. Models are offered with handrails and telescoping ladders. The platforms are made of 3/4-inch high-density polyethylene that measures 18x15 inches, are predrilled with pilot holes for hardware, and are supported by 1-inch-diameter stainless-steel rails to mount on the transom at a standard 10-degree angle.

For our application, the Garelick Outboard Transom Platform & Telescoping Ladder model 19536 best suited our purpose. The ladder/platform combo is small enough to mount on the transom on either side of the outboard motor, yet large enough to serve as an over-water seat for donning or removing mask, snorkel, and fins. We selected the under-platform ladder-stowing option to keep the topside of the platform clear in the event we wanted to use it to stand on while inspecting the outboard's lower unit or to remove the cowling while the boat is in the water.

Selection Tip

According to a Garelick customer-service representative, boaters with outboard applications often choose a single-handrail 19536 model swim platform such as ours only to find that their transoms are not high enough to offer suitable thru-hull mounting points for both the strut below and the handrail above the platform (a distance of approximately 22 inches on our project boat). These customers end up ordering a second handrail to support the platform and forgo the underside strut and short support rail that are required with the single-handrail model. In such cases, a double-handrail model such as the 19546, designed for sterndrive use, may be a better choice if there is still enough clearance with the inside rail to turn the outboard all the way to the side on which the platform is installed.

We chose to mount the platform on the port side of the transom, which is a common location aboard outboard-powered boats as it avoids swimmers having to step over cables between the engine and starboard side of the boat on the inside of the transom.

We spent a little more than one hour to complete the installation, which includes mounting the platform to the transom, followed by attaching the telescoping ladder to the platform after it is secured to the boat. Here are the major steps in the installation process.

1. Determine which side of the transom is best suited for installing the swim platform. Mount the platform's single handrail on the side of the platform opposite the outboard. In our case, with the platform located on the port side, the handrail support was mounted on the port side of the platform.

2. Secure the short underside support rail and angled underside strut to the starboard side of the platform.

3. Hold the assembled platform against the transom to determine its location , making sure it's level with and above the waterline with room to thru-bolt both the handrail support above and the angled rail support below to the transom. Check to make sure the outboard can swing fully to port without contacting the platform.

4. Mark the locations of the thru-transom holes to be drilled for the bolts (customer supplied) to mount the strut and support rails on the transom.

5. Drill the mounting holes , starting with the bit in reverse so as not to chip the surface of the gelcoat.

6. Seal the holes, and bed each bolt with marine-grade sealant. Transoms are often wood-cored so it's important the hardware is sealed correctly, or water can begin to rot the wood and weaken the structure. In many applications, backing plates will be required on the inside of the transom to spread the loads and prevent possible issues with the fasteners compressing the core materials.

7. Attach the strut and support rails using thru-bolts with adequately oversized washers or backing plates. If the transom is less than 2 inches thick, Garelick recommends that a backing plate (not included) be mounted on the inside of the transom.

8. Attach the telescoping ladder , which comes preassembled, to the platform using the pilot holes and fasteners supplied.

9. Attach the ladder's security strap mounting tab to the underside of the platform with stainless-steel bolts. Then secure the stowed ladder with the touch-tape strap beneath the platform, and check operation of the strap and ladder.

Swim Ladder Safety

Most people have the greatest strength in their legs, not their arms, making it difficult to pull themselves up a ladder, particularly if their legs can't assist. Steps that do not extend far enough down into the water can make getting up onto the swim platform difficult. Steps must extend far enough into the water to suit your abilities, and any handles for climbing out must be in the right location and high enough to work properly. Even the best platform and ladder arrangement may not work well for all people.

Practice using your ladder at a safe place, such as off a gently sloping beach, with help around, to be sure it suits your abilities and those of your family and crew. You may need to provide additional steps or handholds on the boat's transom or elsewhere at the stern to make getting out of the water easier. These can be bought from chandlery shops or online. Ensure that any hardware is securely installed using stainless-steel nuts, thru-bolts, and backing plates.

Two other important safety notes: To avoid serious injury, turn off your engine when using a swim ladder. And always be aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide when in the water or near the water's surface around boats. This silent killer, which has no noticeable smell, can come from running engines, especially gasoline, as well as other sources on your boat or on nearby boats. It can quickly disable and kill.

Boat ladders make it easier for boaters and their passengers to get in and out of the water, from a dinghy or the boat deck itself. How Do Boat Ladders Work?

Effective boat ladders have at least 2 to 4 rungs underwater. There must also be clearance for feet and hands so that swimmers may easily climb out of the water and onto the deck. It must also fold up and out of the way as needed, or be removable and store easily.

What is the Best Boat Ladder Selection for my Craft?

1) If your powerboat is a pleasure craft you’ll want a swim step ladder. These are suspended from your vessel’s swim step and usually have up to three rungs. They may also fold up onto the platform when not in use.

2) Over the gunwale ladders are the most common. These are used on small sailboats and also on runabouts. Their name comes from their distinct hook shape.

3) Platform ladders extend from diving platforms which are generally placed to one side of the engine on outboard-powered craft.

4) Dive Ladders are used for many sporting activities but chiefly for swimming. These feature a central rod crossed by its rungs. The rungs double as handholds. These boat ladders detach and mount easily to dive and swim platforms.

5) Transom ladders are used on the sailboat stern and are hinged to swing up and out of the way when the boat is under sail.

6) Designed expressly for this type of craft, pontoon ladders facilitate getting on or off your craft and feature large handrails and deep steps.

7) Portable ladders are an economical way to allow boaters and passengers to embark and disembark. These hook over your boat’s gunwale, are easy to stow and will float if accidentally disengaged from the hull.

SWIMMING LADDER

The big swimming ladder by Xquip. It is designed for comfortable water access and easy storage.

To improve ergonomics, the steps are angled slightly forward thereby keeping the weight of the user above the steps. The number of steps can be chosen by the client depending on the geometry of the swimming platform, demanded ergonomics and available storage space.

The ladder comes with two deck sockets, which are custom designed to your requirements. For storage, the bottom part of the ladder folds up and the handrails turn inward which results in a flat, easy to stow package.

Specifications of Our AquaStairs

AquaStairs are all marine-grade 6063 T aluminum dock and pontoon ladders. The steps are made of textured plate aluminum to prevent slipping. These staircase steps are also rolled and hemmed at the front to provide a smooth edge to prevent cuts.   All dock ladder models are hinged at the mounting brackets to allow the ladder to be easily lifted out of the water for storage. Only four bolts are required to attach these swim ladders to a floating dock, fixed dock, seawall, swim platform, bulkhead, or pier.   The dock ladder models can easily accommodate up to 500 lbs. since the body of these ladders is all fully welded, unlike many other marine ladders. All of our aluminum dock and boat ladders come with a limited lifetime warranty.

I bought your stairs 2 years ago for our floating dock. They are wonderful. We bought the 5 step version. It is so much easier to get in and out of the water with these. My mother who is in her 70's can now enjoy swimming in the lake again. The steps really are great for folks who need a little more support getting in and out of the water. The height of the handles on the dock really helps as well. They feel very sturdy and secure and it takes much less arm strength to get in and out of the water with the steps than a traditional dock ladder. Thanks for creating such a great product. At the Japan International Boat Show 2024, Lexus unveiled the 1/20 scale model of its new LY680 Luxury Yacht , an upgrade of the previous LY650 water vehicle . Lexus’ latest model comes with an expanded swimming platform and flybridge to accommodate more guests on deck. The extended flybridge, which measures 1,400mm, now features a spacious lounge area and a dedicated barbecue grill, while the swimming platform has been expanded by 700mm to accommodate additional guests who wish to take a dip in the sea.

When Lexus conceived the idea for its LY680 Luxury Yacht, even before its debut at the Japan International Boat Show 2024 , the design team aimed to create a water vehicle that would feel like a ‘tranquil hideaway at sea.’ They imagined it as a moving space where ‘discerning customers could feel free and at ease.’ The resulting concept was a three-level luxury yacht equipped with living spaces that make the LY680 feel like a deluxe apartment on the sea.

The passengers enter the Lexus’ LY680 Luxury Yacht, and when they descend, they can find a kidney-shaped sofa nestled in one corner. Adjacent to the sofa is a desk with a plush seat, tailored as a workspace at sea for those who still need to hustle. Panoramic windows adorn the space, offering views of the waters and allowing natural light to flood in. The use of dark, varnished wood adds a sense of opulence to the interior, and across from the sofa and desk, a semi-circular bed invites passengers to relax while watching the waves and scenery through slanted windows.

Walking up to the control area, the captain of Lexus’ LY680 Luxury Yacht navigates the water vehicle with ease through the expansive set of windows. The openness of the space is further enhanced by plush seating, two of them reminiscent of cinema seats. Even the wooden floors help brighten up the overall aesthetic. During the Japan International Boat Show 2024, where yacht enthusiasts could view the 1/20 scale model of the LY680, Lexus revealed that the luxury yacht can accommodate up to 15 passengers across three rooms with six beds.

Twin Volvo engines for Lexus’ LY680 Luxury Yacht

For those interested in specifications, Lexus’ LY680 Luxury Yacht is expected to be equipped with Twin Volvo IPS 1350/1050 engines and have a fuel tank capacity of 4,012 liters and a fresh water tank capacity of 852 liters. Production of the luxury yacht will be carried out by the Horizon Group, based on the Toyota Production System. Lexus has announced that yacht enthusiasts can reserve their water vehicle model through Toyota Marine sales offices in Japan and select dealerships. As of publishing, Lexus aims to deliver the first batch of the LY680 Luxury Yacht in Spring 2026, with international availability pending based on customer demand.

Lexus , Toyota’s high-end nameplate, has luxury lifestyle brand aspirations that supersede the automobile industry. To that end, the Japanese marque recently announced the new LY680 Luxury Yacht.

Lexus isn’t a brand typically associated with luxury yachts, but there’s some serious pedigree within the greater Toyota umbrella, which also includes the Toyota Marine Department that’s been building boats since 1997. Lexus didn’t enter the equation until the mid-2010s, when Chief Branding Officer Akio Toyoda commissioned a a non-production Lexus Sport Yacht concept that debuted in 2017.

Next came the $3.7 million LY650 Luxury Yacht, which has been in production since 2019. Now Lexus has announced its latest evolution, the LY680 seen here.

The idea is “to feel like a hideout in the middle of the sea, providing a space where discerning customers can feel free and at ease.” Among the enhancements are the lengthened flybridge, which has been extended by 1,400 mm and features a spacious lounge sofa and a barbecue grill. In addition, the swimming platform has been extended by 700 mm to better accommodate offshore activities.

There are three rooms with six beds, with room for a maximum of 15 passengers aboard. Horizon Group, the Asian luxury yacht builder that will product the LY680, is equipping a pair of 1,000-horsepower, 12.8-liter Volvo Penta IPS 1350 diesel engines, and while no performance specs were given, “Lexus aims for confidence inspiring cruising performance, offering stable maneuverability, excellent ride comfort, and quietness,” according to a statement.

A 1/20 scale model of the LY680 was displayed at the Japan International Boat Show 2024 that just ended on March 24. Production is slated to begin in 2026, and given the LY650’s price tag, expect the LY680’s cost to exceed $4 million.

Moscow’s nightlife scene is thriving, and arguably one of the best the world has to offer – top-notch Russian women, coupled with a never-ending list of venues, Moscow has a little bit of something for everyone’s taste. Moscow nightlife is not for the faint of heart – and if you’re coming, you better be ready to go Friday and Saturday night into the early morning.

This comprehensive guide to Moscow nightlife will run you through the nuts and bolts of all you need to know about Moscow’s nightclubs and give you a solid blueprint to operate with during your time in Moscow.

What you need to know before hitting Moscow nightclubs

Prices in moscow nightlife.

Before you head out and start gaming all the sexy Moscow girls , we have to talk money first. Bring plenty because in Moscow you can never bring a big enough bankroll. Remember, you’re the man so making a fuzz of not paying a drink here or there will not go down well.

Luckily most Moscow clubs don’t do cover fees. Some electro clubs will charge 15-20$, depending on their lineup. There’s the odd club with a minimum spend of 20-30$, which you’ll drop on drinks easily. By and large, you can scope out the venues for free, which is a big plus.

Bottle service is a great deal in Moscow. At top-tier clubs, it starts at 1,000$. That’ll go a long way with premium vodka at 250$, especially if you have three or four guys chipping in. Not to mention that it’s a massive status boost for getting girls, especially at high-end clubs.

Without bottle service, you should estimate a budget of 100-150$ per night. That is if you drink a lot and hit the top clubs with the hottest girls. Scale down for less alcohol and more basic places.

Dress code & Face control

Door policy in Moscow is called “face control” and it’s always the guy behind the two gorillas that gives the green light if you’re in or out.

In Moscow nightlife there’s only one rule when it comes to dress codes:

You can never be underdressed.

People dress A LOT sharper than, say, in the US and that goes for both sexes. For high-end clubs, you definitely want to roll with a sharp blazer and a pocket square, not to mention dress shoes in tip-top condition. Those are the minimum requirements to level the playing field vis a vis with other sharply dressed guys that have a lot more money than you do. Unless you plan to hit explicit electro or underground clubs, which have their own dress code, you are always on the money with that style.

Getting in a Moscow club isn’t as hard as it seems: dress sharp, speak English at the door and look like you’re in the mood to spend all that money that you supposedly have (even if you don’t). That will open almost any door in Moscow’s nightlife for you.

Types of Moscow Nightclubs

In Moscow there are four types of clubs with the accompanying female clientele:

High-end clubs:

These are often crossovers between restaurants and clubs with lots of tables and very little space to dance. Heavy accent on bottle service most of the time but you can work the room from the bar as well. The hottest and most expensive girls in Moscow go there. Bring deep pockets and lots of self-confidence and you have a shot at swooping them.

Regular Mid-level clubs:

They probably resemble more what you’re used to in a nightclub: big dancefloors, stages and more space to roam around. Bottle service will make you stand out more but you can also do well without. You can find all types of girls but most will be in the 6-8 range. Your targets should always be the girls drinking and ideally in pairs. It’s impossible not to swoop if your game is at least half-decent.

Basic clubs/dive bars:

Usually spots with very cheap booze and lax face control. If you’re dressed too sharp and speak no Russian, you might attract the wrong type of attention so be vigilant. If you know the local scene you can swoop 6s and 7s almost at will. Usually students and girls from the suburbs.

Electro/underground clubs:

Home of the hipsters and creatives. Parties there don’t mean meeting girls and getting drunk but doing pills and spacing out to the music. Lots of attractive hipster girls if that is your niche. That is its own scene with a different dress code as well.

What time to go out in Moscow

Moscow nightlife starts late. Don’t show up at bars and preparty spots before 11pm because you’ll feel fairly alone. Peak time is between 1am and 3am. That is also the time of Moscow nightlife’s biggest nuisance: concerts by artists you won’t know and who only distract your girls from drinking and being gamed. From 4am to 6am the regular clubs are emptying out but plenty of people, women included, still hit up one of the many afterparty clubs. Those last till well past 10am.

As far as days go: Fridays and Saturdays are peak days. Thursday is an OK day, all other days are fairly weak and you have to know the right venues.

The Ultimate Moscow Nightclub List

Short disclaimer: I didn’t add basic and electro clubs since you’re coming for the girls, not for the music. This list will give you more options than you’ll be able to handle on a weekend.

Preparty – start here at 11PM

Classic restaurant club with lots of tables and a smallish bar and dancefloor. Come here between 11pm and 12am when the concert is over and they start with the actual party. Even early in the night tons of sexy women here, who lean slightly older (25 and up).

The second floor of the Ugolek restaurant is an extra bar with dim lights and house music tunes. Very small and cozy with a slight hipster vibe but generally draws plenty of attractive women too. A bit slower vibe than Valenok.

Very cool, spread-out venue that has a modern library theme. Not always full with people but when it is, it’s brimming with top-tier women. Slow vibe here and better for grabbing contacts and moving on.

High-end: err on the side of being too early rather than too late because of face control.

Secret Room

Probably the top venue at the moment in Moscow . Very small but wildly popular club, which is crammed with tables but always packed. They do parties on Thursdays and Sundays as well. This club has a hip-hop/high-end theme, meaning most girls are gold diggers, IG models, and tattooed hip hop chicks. Very unfavorable logistics because there is almost no room no move inside the club but the party vibe makes it worth it. Strict face control.

Close to Secret Room and with a much more favorable and spacious three-part layout. This place attracts very hot women but also lots of ball busters and fakes that will leave you blue-balled. Come early because after 4am it starts getting empty fast. Electronic music.

A slightly kitsch restaurant club that plays Russian pop and is full of gold diggers, semi-pros, and men from the Caucasus republics. Thursday is the strongest night but that dynamic might be changing since Secret Room opened its doors. You can swoop here but it will be a struggle.

Mid-level: your sweet spot in terms of ease and attractiveness of girls for an average budget.

Started going downwards in 2018 due to lax face control and this might get even worse with the World Cup. In terms of layout one of the best Moscow nightclubs because it’s very big and bottle service gives you a good edge here. Still attracts lots of cute girls with loose morals but plenty of provincial girls (and guys) as well. Swooping is fairly easy here.

I haven’t been at this place in over a year, ever since it started becoming ground zero for drunken teenagers. Similar clientele to Icon but less chic, younger and drunker. Decent mainstream music that attracts plenty of tourists. Girls are easy here as well.

Sort of a Coyote Ugly (the real one in Moscow sucks) with party music and lots of drunken people licking each others’ faces. Very entertaining with the right amount of alcohol and very easy to pull in there. Don’t think about staying sober in here, you’ll hate it.

Artel Bessonitsa/Shakti Terrace

Electronic music club that is sort of a high-end place with an underground clientele and located between the teenager clubs Icon and Gipsy. Very good music but a bit all over the place with their vibe and their branding. You can swoop almost any type of girl here from high-heeled beauty to coked-up hipsters, provided they’re not too sober.

Afterparty: if by 5AM  you haven’t pulled, it’s time to move here.

Best afterparty spot in terms of trying to get girls. Pretty much no one is sober in there and savage gorilla game goes a long way. Lots of very hot and slutty-looking girls but it can be hard to tell apart who is looking for dick and who is just on drugs but not interested. If by 9-10am you haven’t pulled, it is probably better to surrender.

The hipster alternative for afterparties, where even more drugs are in play. Plenty of attractive girls there but you have to know how to work this type of club. A nicer atmosphere and better music but if you’re desperate to pull, you’ll probably go to Miks.

Weekday jokers: if you’re on the hunt for some sexy Russian girls during the week, here are two tips to make your life easier.

Chesterfield

Ladies night on Wednesdays means this place gets pretty packed with smashed teenagers and 6s and 7s. Don’t pull out the three-piece suit in here because it’s a “simpler” crowd. Definitely your best shot on Wednesdays.

If you haven’t pulled at Chesterfield, you can throw a Hail Mary and hit up Garage’s Black Music Wednesdays. Fills up really late but there are some cute Black Music groupies in here. Very small club. Thursday through Saturday they do afterparties and you have an excellent shot and swooping girls that are probably high.

Shishas Sferum

This is pretty much your only shot on Mondays and Tuesdays because they offer free or almost free drinks for women. A fairly low-class club where you should watch your drinks. As always the case in Moscow, there will be cute girls here on any day of the week but it’s nowhere near as good as on the weekend.

In a nutshell, that is all you need to know about where to meet Moscow girls in nightlife. There are tons of options, and it all depends on what best fits your style, based on the type of girls that you’re looking for.
