MG Club 19?

Hi folks, looking for any information on the Club 19, can't seem to find anything on the web at all. Mainly want rigging and set-up info so if anyone has this yacht and has any pictures of their set up I'd be most greatful! Cheers

  • 15 Apr 2011

Hi, I can't help much with your question at the moment. However, I purchased a Club 19 a few months ago and intend to launch in the next week or so. At this moment in time, I have no idea what way to set the rig up, so there will be some trial and error for the first few weeks of sailing until I get close to an acceptable setup. There is another 19 that races at my club so hopefully I should be able to identify what works and what doesn't reasonably quickly. I am assuming that you are in a similar situation to myself. Hopefully we could discuss the setup as the season begins. There is very little info about these boats. I don't even know how many were built. I know a bit more about the construction after a few months of work on the boat, but otherwise, I don't know much about them.

Help with Club 19/information sharing? I am keen to get in touch with other Club 19 owners - there is very little about these boats on the web and I spotted this old thread. Hopefully someone still has one of these boats and picks up this posting. I have recently broken the rudder of my Club 19. I would like to give the maker the exact dimensions to make a replacement.......but mine is at the bottom of the North sea! I still have the stock, but no idea of the blade dimensions. It would be absolutely great if anyone has any useful measurements of the rudder or could take some for me? Any thoughts on whether the blade is correctly sized as it stands would also be useful. On set up, mine was raced on the Firth of Forth before I bought it. Certainly seems to go pretty well (fairly overpowered upwind in a breeze, but exciting! and very brisk off wind). Happy to contribute any measurements etc I can. On sail plan modifications, I have managed to squeeze in a roller furling system (small Plastimo) to make sailing with wife and small child a possibility. This was really tight and involved cutting down the standard Plastimo base as the original Genoa is pretty much the full length of the forestay....but it can be done. I am musing on whether a bowsprit could be added to enable sailing with a Genneker rather than the current traditional spinnaker set up. Thinking about using some laser spars, but may need to reinforce the foredeck etc. Anyone tried this? I think there may be a few variations on the boat and would be interested in what versions anyone else has. I did see another Club 19 with a fixed keel, but mine is a lifting daggerboard and (was) a fixed rudder. Not sure how many variations there have been but I am hoping to get the new rudder to lift in some way without having to take the entire rudder off (and risk dropping it every time). I have rigged up a pulley system to raise and lower it via the coach roof winch and it does mean I can set off with the keel up in shallows and drop it once into deeper water (wouldn't try it if it was rough though given the instability with the keel up). Cheers

Hey, Your in luck. I have the rudder sitting in my garage so I have been able to take a few measurements off it for you. However, my Club is a fixed keel but I have taken the measurements from the waterline. I don't know if the lifting keel version has the same max draft as the fixed keel version, so might be best to check. I can tell you that the rudder depth is very close to the keel depth. Depth below waterline = 1.00m Chord at top = 0.34m Chord at bottom = 0.24m The leading edge is appears almost vertical and the taper is on the trailing edge. The leading edge has a cut out at the hull to allow the leading edge to protrude 35mm in front of the pintle centre. If you need any more details, I will see what I can find out. I can't help you much above the waterline. They are brilliant boats, I bought mine last year and didn't get as much sailing in as I had planned. Also, never had the right crew for the right conditions to see how she goes downwind in a breeze but the days is was blowing, two sail reaching was good fun. Very lively and sails like a big dinghy. I would say the lifting keel version would be very unstable with the keel up as they are tippy enough with the keel fixed! There are still a good few boats around. There are three 19s in the lough where I sail, one at another club near where I live and another up for sale about 40 miles away but its a scrapper. One of these looks to have tried a assymetric/cruising spinnaker but I am not a member of the club and so can't get a good look at it, I cannot be sure. It seems to have one end of the pole anchored to the foredeck about half way between the anchor well and front of coachroof. At the bow fitting, the pole is again secured and protrudes 3 - 4 ft. It looks very similar to a laser mast, maybe a bit thinner. I have never seen the boat up close or in the water so I cannot tell you if this works. From what I have seen, apart from fixed vs lifting keel, there is very little difference between the boats. Very basic down below and no interior mouldings. Mine seems to have a different mast to the others locally but otherwise, they are all very similar. If you are interested, there is at least one club 21. A 19 with an extended transom. I found pics on the internet some time ago. Regards, farr10

Lakesailor

I have never actually sailed mine singlehanded but that's because it was set up for a crew of three and things have been located in awkward positions for single handing combined with the fact that the mainsail has a bolt rope rather than sliders and there is no topping lift for the boom so it makes hoisting very difficult. Also, I am not sure whether it is just my mooring, which is in a small tidal channel, but the boat will not sit on the mooring with the mainsail up, it just tries to continually sail over the mooring. However, with two up, the boats are very manageable because they handle so well. The only thing than concerned me when I bought mine was that they are a balsa core hull.

Club 19 I have owned and sailed/raced a fixed fin Club 19 for a number of years, they are great little yachts and sail well with a crew of three, I also set her up and was sucsessfull with her singlehanded. They were built in Glasgow by a company called Marine Glass and seem to have been popular little cruiser racers. If you live in the north Owen sails have the dimensions and Westerly in the south for replacement sails, I do have a copy of the original sails literature which I could scan and post on this forum if anyone is interested. Mine is currently laid up ashore as I purchased a bigger yacht for family reasons and suitability and intend to work on heer at the end of the season before offering her up for sale. All in all a great little boat

Hi Colston. If you could scan a copy of the original sales literature, I would like to see it. The sails on my boat are Owens and they seem pretty good. The other Club 19 at my yacht club uses Westaways. There are some differences in the sail wardrobe on both boats. Firstly, mine are standard Dacron with a Pentax Genoa vs various exotic looking materials on the other boat. My boat as a non-overlapping jib and it works as well as the standard overlapping headsail used on the other boat. However, the spinnaker on my boat is tiny in comparison. I have heard that two sizes were available. The larger one is massive for the size of the boat. My crew last season was taking up sailing again after a 16 year break, so we didn't use the spinnaker much, so I wasn't able to tell how much of a difference the spinnaker size delta made.

Thanks! Hi farr10 Thanks very much for the measurements - brilliant help! (I might get on the water this season now!) The spinnaker I have seems pretty big. Overall, the sailplan feels quite generous for a 19ft boat. Colston - the sales literature would be great, thanks. Mine are Owens and the gennoa doesn't overlap. Actually feels really balanced using one of the smaller jibs upwind and points slightly better too. I am hoping to more or less manage singlehanded when out with the family. As well as roller furling, I have got hold of some lazy jacks to fit (farr 10, I have a topping lift, but you're right, the bolt rope is a pain on your own. I might investigate some sort of feeder). On sailing over the mooring, mine seems ok with the kicker right off....but I tend to hoist under way as I am moored on pontoons between piles on a little cut off a tidal river and it would probably all end in tears if I sailed off. I got a glimpse of the balsa core when I changed the log. All seemed fine, so I guess a) the Sikaflex was watertight and b) there is a reasonable amount of glass wrapped around it - the boat certainly feels stiff in waves...very dinghy-like. Thanks

Club 19 sales literature This is the copy of the copy of the sales literature, there are a few scribbles from the previous owner on there, not sure how accurate it is. Interesting to see overlapping genoa in contrast to other posts, I suppose it all depends on how you find the set up best.

  • 15 Apr 2012

Thanks for the sales literature Colston. Its great to see the original sales info and get actual confirmed figures for the boat, especially on the ballast ratio! Club 19 - No probs with the measurements, glad they are of help. When I had the log out of mine as well as the cockpit drains through the transom, the balsa core was well protected. The only area I had a minor issue with was the anchor well drain holes as there was damp core about 3" diameter around the hole. (However, I had other problems as I had to replace the front bulkhead and anchor well floor. I noticed this when I bought the boat and was due to a poorly fitted through-bulkhead electrical gland for the bow lights.) Also, based on the other Club 19 at the yacht club this area is one to watch. All in all, they seem well built, just a bit rough and ready down below. The only other area I had a problem with was the chain plates. I had to do a chain plate reinforcement last season. The original chain plates seemed a bit lightweight for such a big rig. Now sufficiently over engineered extending well down the bulkhead with more bolts securing them!!

  • 20 Apr 2012

The transom is solid not balsa core so no problems there, agree with point about chainplates though!

On my boat, the transom isn't solid. It is most definitely a cored construction. I actually have a delam in the transom and in preparation to repair have drilled into the core to check it is dry. Some of the boats must have been built differently. Out of curiosity, what is the sail number of your boats? Mine is 1096, formally Mandy Sue but renamed a few years ago by a previous owner. I have been trying to find out how many were built and still sailing. There were a lot of boats up for sale a year or so ago and I took a note of each one to build up a list of boats. Turns out there was also a 21 foot version with extended transom. There is also a Club 20 listed on the clyde yacht club association list as well as a number of 19s. I haven't been able to find out much about this one though. Anybody know anything? farr10

Hi there, I also own a Club 19 & have always been on the hunt for more more info on it. I sail on the West Coast of Scotland with it & do West Highland Yachting Week every year for about the last five or six years. Did the whole week last year inc. feeder race. Magic!!! Just the two of us for the whole week!! Did well the wee boat!! Red October!! I was just wondering if you would be kind enough to send me the literature you have on the boat. i.e sales stuff & specs, etc. That would be awesome! Perhaps I can update my handicap... I think I just made half of it up!! Yours. Finners ;0)

  • 15 Jul 2012

Hi Finners, Somebody else posted a scan of the original sales literature on page 1 of this thread. It gives some of the statistics for the boat, so this should be of help. West Highland Week sounds excellent. I have only been doing a bit of club racing but my old dinghy crew can't always get out sailing and other person I sail with is still getting up and running and has not progressed onto the spinnaker yet. We go well upwind, but as soon as others pop the spinnaker we lose out. Can't help with the handicap system as we use modified py numbers. I think the club's py should be around 1040-1050. For club racing mine is sitting around 1075-1090 which is ok for just 2 sails. Are there many other club 19s based near you? Farr10

Hi Farr10, Sorry.... I did see that right enough!! But I hadn't subscribed at that point so couldn't see the pics! Thought it was just pics of boat or whatever! I did quite a lot of single-handed stuff when I got the boat up to scratch.. So I set it up reasonably for that! Just reef early to avoid any epics!! Even raced West Highland Week single-handed, and flew bright, flourescent yellow gennaker! Pic is Still on front of the List of Entries every year.. Can be seen online!! Was lying about 5th overall for about 2hrs until the wind came round behind & everyone caught me with their spinnakers! I so wished I had put the kite up instead. Wouldn't have even needed to jibe either!! Woulda been a 1st Overall I think!! But, I wasn't quite as experienced back then as I am now!! All good fun though!! The info would appear to be much the same as I have here... Owen Sails are my local sailmakers & I know them all very well & sail with them!! Just had training session with Chris before he headed off to fulfil his Olympic Coaching down south!! He's brilliant!! Worth getting him aboard, I'll tell ya!!! Thanks for pointing me at the info though!! Good to have the ballast weight etc!! Dont really know of any other 19's about though!! I think I'm the only mad one!!! ;0) I love my wee boat!!

Hi Finnersz, I had a look for you, the only pick I could see was on the title bar on the website which has a tiny little bright yellow spinnaker in the middle of much bigger boats. It sounds like you are sailing it well. No experience with the guys from Owens sails, but their sails seem pretty good. I have Owens sails on my boat. I have a Pentax genoa but I prefer to use the dacron blade jib as I feel it goes better. The other club 19 at my club has Westaways sails and uses the standard overlapping headsail. There doesn't appear to be much difference in speed. How does the gennaker perform? Is it just for reaching or can you carry it a bit deeper downwind? Although this is now my second season, I haven't really sailed the boat as much as I would like and very little spinnaker work. It sounds like you were sailing pretty well singlehanded, I'll have to give it a try! They are great wee boats and punch well above their diminutive size. Farr10

I also have a club 19. I''m new to sailing and would appreciate any advice regarding the set up. I currently can be seen sailing around and around cardiff bay!

Hello, be really greatful if anyone can help us out! My other half has recently bought himself a Club 19 Yacht. There will be a max of 2 adults and 2 children, but what set ups of the interior do you guys have? Pictures would be very grateful to give us a idea! Polly

Hi Pollywick, Can't be a huge amount of help on the interior. Although, I think that they are all pretty much the same inside. It should sleep two adults and two kids, provided you are all not too tall. I have a set of seat cushions but sadly that is as luxurious as it gets. I had planned to fit a seat back onto the shelf below the side deck to make it more comfortable to sit down below, but had other things to sort out over the winter. There are two small 'units' / cubby holes between the side berths and forepeak, which should allow for a camping stove etc, but that's about it I'm afraid. More akin to camping than caravanning. On the plus side, the hull construction should provide a bit of insulation but having never spent a night on board, I have no idea if this actually makes any difference. Fuddsi, What sort of setup notes are you looking for, rig tuning, control line setup, upgrades, etc?

Review of Club 19 MG

Basic specs..

The boat can sail close to the beach as the draft is just 0.23 - 0.33 meter (0.75 - 1.05 ft) dependent of the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Club 19 MG is 2.63, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 5.4 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Club 19 MG is about 77 kg/cm, alternatively 432 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 77 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 432 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 23.82

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 13m 2 (139 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

This section shown boat owner's changes, improvements, etc. Here you might find inspiration for your boat.

Do you have changes/improvements you would like to share? Upload a photo and describe what to look for.

We are always looking for new photos. If you can contribute with photos for Club 19 MG it would be a great help.

Is a major music festival finally coming to the twin cities lollapalooza backers say yes.

The concert company behind Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits and some of America's other biggest music festivals has announced plans for a new two-day event in St. Paul next July — one that could be Minnesota's long-awaited answer to these popular music bashes.

C3 Presents has begun advertising a new festival called the Minnesota Yacht Clu b , which is scheduled for July 19-20, 2024, on Harriet Island along the Mississippi riverfront across from downtown St. Paul.

Minnesota Yacht Club organizers aim to draw 30,000-35,000 fans per day in its inaugural year. About 20 acts are promised over two days on two big stages in the initial promo for the festival, the lineup for which is under wraps along with ticket info until at least mid-January.

Tim Sweetwood, the Atlanta-based C3 promoter leading the new festival, confirmed what Twin Cities music lovers have been saying for years: We deserve a big music fest like this.

"When you consider that the Twin Cities is a big enough market to support five major-league sports teams," Sweetwood said, "I don't see why it can't support one major music festival, too."

C3 is not the first big concert company to try to launch a fest of this ilk — and not even the first to choose Harriet Island to try to host such an event.

C3's corporate partner Live Nation tried to put on its own big music fest, River's Edge, in the same location in 2012. Live Nation executives promised St. Paul a five-year commitment to produce River's Edge there but then canceled the event after just one year with a rather disjointed lineup that included Tool and the Dave Matthews Band as headliners.

C3 is pledging a different approach with the Minnesota Yacht Club.

"From a musical perspective we're just going to try to produce a lineup that just jibes a little bit better [than River's Edge] and offers more synergy from day to day," Sweetwood said.

"And we'll try to give it a little more color and better branding, the kind of things we have a good feel for at C3 being primarily a festival producer."

That branding includes an image of a historic riverboat Ă  la St. Paul's Jonathan Padelford on the Minnesota Yacht Club's social media pages and other signage. The riverboat theme apparently is not just for show.

"We are going to put the Padelford and some other boats to work as part of the festival experience," Sweetwood said.

St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter welcomed C3's plans in a statement issued with the new festival's announcement.

"We are thrilled to host this exciting music festival presented by C3, a top-tier festival promoter, at Harriet Island Regional Park," Carter said.

"With the breathtaking Mississippi River as its backdrop, this two-day event promises stellar performances, delicious local cuisine, and an opportunity for both residents and visitors to relish our nationally-acclaimed park facilities."

Sweetwood said the location was chosen for the same reason Live Nation tried to produce River's Edge there — the scenery and workability of Harriet Island.

"With the arena [Xcel Energy Center] and downtown right there, there are tons of areas to park over there," he said. "We'll make sure we work with the city getting people to and from the festival easily.

"We've been talking to the city well over a year now and working with them on the logistical plans. Those are the kinds of things C3 specializes in handling, I think, being primarily in the festival business."

Also a producer for festivals in Arizona, New Jersey and Florida, Sweetwood is credited for launching Atlanta's successful Shaky Knees Festival, now in its 11th year. He held up Shaky Knees as a good comparison for the size and type of lineup to expect from Minnesota Yacht Club.

"We'll just have the two stages in the first year, and so you can only do so many genres," he said, "but we'll cover adult-contemporary, rock, pop, some blues, a cool mix like that."

Next year's Shaky Knees lineup has already been announced, with top names including the Foo Fighters, Noah Kahan, Queens of the Stone Age, Weezer and Arcade Fire. Passes for Shaky Knees in 2023 started at $199 for three days or $119 for a single day ticket. VIP options — nowadays a trademark of the major festivals — ranged from $699 on up to $4,500 for the "ultimate" pass.

C3 Presents was founded in Austin, Texas, and quickly became a major industry player after its first Austin City Limits Festival in 2002. The company took over Lollapalooza in 2005 and successfully remade it into an annual festival that draws more than 100,000 attendees daily in downtown Chicago.

Live Nation bought a 51% ownership stake in C3 in 2014, but C3 still operates with some autonomy inside the megacorporation that also owns Ticketmaster. Locally based Live Nation representatives have also been involved in the planning for Minnesota Yacht Club.

News of the new fest — maybe "MYC" will stick as a nickname, much like "ACL" for Austin City Limits — has already been widely welcomed on social media by Twin Cities music lovers, who've seen several other, smaller-scale summer festivals in town become sidelined in recent years. Those have included the Basilica Block Party, Soundset, Rock the Garden and Canterbury Park's TC Summer Jam. Only the Basilica bash is said to be making a possible return with changes next summer.

Chris Riemenschneider has been covering the Twin Cities music scene since 2001, long enough for Prince to shout him out during "Play That Funky Music (White Boy)." The St. Paul native authored the book "First Avenue: Minnesota's Mainroom" and previously worked as a music critic at the Austin American-Statesman in Texas.

The top 50 most exclusive yacht clubs in the world honored with platinum status.

Royal Yacht Squadron in England

The rich and famous are not merely looking for the best place to anchor their yachts; they are also seeking out exclusive memberships in stunning destinations, all offering luxury amenities and, of course, bragging rights. These exclusive yachting clubs with often outrageous initiation fees, provide luxurious clubhouses, and provide accommodations for yachties who want to get their land legs. Most of them provide high-end concierge service to its members as well as Michelin-star quality restaurants and more.

Yacht Clubs have been recognized in the Platinum Clubs of America elections for more than 20 years. According to the Platinum Club, “Recognition in the following categories is important in the selection of Platinum status; Tradition, history, and heritage, a respected membership, excellence in amenities, exceptional service, adapting to changing times, and overall experience.

I spoke with the President of Club Leaders Forum, David V. Smith, about the selection, and he says, “we created an alphabetical selection this time as opposed to by rank because we felt that it was challenging to compare a yacht club in Ireland with a yacht club in Singapore, as amenities, location and facilities do vary quite a lot. The yachting and boating world is a different and unique culture, typically a little more relaxed and not as formal as country clubs and golf clubs. However, many of the world’s finest yacht clubs have wonderful history and traditions, with a great sense of camaraderie among their members. Certain yacht clubs were selected by the Panel not necessarily for their facilities and amenities but in their recognition of hosting world class sailing regattas and events.”

Here are the top 50 most exclusive yacht clubs worldwide being awarded the ultimate Platinum Status for 2021.

Annapolis Yacht Club

Surrounding the Spa Creek Bridge in Annapolis, the Club boasts over 75 wet slips and dry dockage. The club began in 1886 as an informal canoe club, and today has 1600 regular members active in social, racing, and cruising programs.

New to MSC. Aurea Experience Question.

Cool Cruiser

We have been loyal to another line for a long time, but are interested in cruising the new Seascape, so I have been doing some looking around the site. The Aurea experience interests us and I see one of the benefits is " Free access to the Top Exclusive Solarium." Today an agent called me to say "hey I see you've been looking around the site, let me help you book!" I inquired about the Aurea Experience and what the "Free access to the Top Exclusive Solarium" means. They told me there is one private room we have access to on the Seascape that is all glass, in front of the ship on Deck 20. I asked if it was the Yacht Club Solarium (I think it's called Top 19), because that is what's showing on the deckplan, and she said no. When I was doing some research online, the "Top Exclusive Solarium" seems to be the Yacht Club." Can someone explain to me what the "Free access to the Top Exclusive Solarium" is, if it's not the Yacht Club? Thanks in advance.

On the deck plans Top 19 is at the rear of the YC, either side of deck 19 in a U shape with the covered pool in between. Have a look on YouTube at videos of Seashore where you should find the Top 19 area. The TA has no idea what they are talking about.

Thank you for this explanation. So, Top 19 is the Exclusive Solarium, but is different from the Yacht Club area?

Yes the YC is a totally separate area and only accessible by those staying in that area of the ship. The port side of the Aurea Deck 19 has the bar and covered seating areas.

Correct.. Top 19 is not part of the Yacht Club.

Top 19 Exclusive Solarium is the sun deck area reserved for Aurea passengers.

Located on deck on both sides of the retractable roof. Aurea Bar is on the deck plan in the upper left corner.

Access to Top 19 Exclusive Solarium is via cruise card for Aurea passengers only.

Top 19 is usually very quiet and less passengers than sun deck area on main pool(s).

Yacht Club guests can wander into that area, too.  😁

Thank you all very much for the information. We are excited to try MSC.

You anticipated my question. Exactly what I was going to ask. Previous poster made it sound as though access is available to Aurea pax ONLY.

YC cruise cards didn’t worked for access to Aurea Top 19 Solarium on MSC Grandiosa, MSC Belissima, MSC Meraviglia and MSC Seaview.

We tried it while wandering around and exploring.

We took the photos posted above during a Med cruise on MSC Seashore in Aurea category.

We never entered Aurea Top 19 when sailing in Yacht Club.

3 out of 4 of ours worked on Seashore. I didn't stay long or order anything at the bar. I was just taking pictures on a sea day. Strangely, my card didn't work to access the Yacht Club but my wristband did work.....MSC tech.

Is there a spot for  Aurea passengers on Ocean Cay? If so, what is it like?

Considering bidding on upgrade from a midship balcony on Seascape. Thanks!

No, Aurea guests become part of the general population.

We are on the first sailing out of Miami, Dec. 11

We are on 2nd sailing. I saw the bidding email but I'm curious if anyone who bid has heard back (there's actually still a good number of Aurea balconies on our sailing available to book) I'm wondering if they can accept any until they officially take procession of the ship. It still has 2 days before its done. Anyone on inuragal cruise or yours hopefully will tell us if any bids have been accepted.

What is the MSC Yacht Club? Take a look at MSC Cruises’ luxury suite area

Ashley Kosciolek

MSC Cruises sails nearly two dozen beautiful ships from home ports around the world, but their inviting sun decks can be crowded, and you're likely to encounter queues for dinner, shows and guest services.

The trick to creating a more luxurious experience on this big-ship cruise line is to book a stay in the line's Yacht Club. This upscale enclave within MSC Cruises ' larger ships offers guests more spacious accommodations, butler service and dedicated restaurants and lounges — even coffee delivered to your room each morning, just the way you like it.

Because of the Yacht Club , MSC can offer an inviting experience for cruisers who like big-ship cruising but crave more elevated accommodations, dining and amenities. MSC Cruises was one of the first lines to introduce this ship-within-a-ship concept, along with Norwegian Cruise Line . Now other popular cruise lines, such as Royal Caribbean , also have adopted it.

The Yacht Club section on several of MSC Cruises' ships offers gated access to semi-private dining, butler service and more, but it comes at a price. Find out how much you can expect to pay and what you'll get for your money.

In addition, passengers booked in the Yacht Club have access to their own dedicated bar, lounge and restaurant, as well as a semi-private outdoor bar, pool and hot tubs, all on an exclusive sun deck. When ships dock at the line's private island, Ocean Cay Marine Reserve , Yacht Club passengers have private beach and restaurant access .

In their cabins, Yacht Club cruisers will find a pillow menu, memory foam mattresses, high-quality linens, bathrooms with marble floors, a specialty coffee maker, complimentary open minibar access, one gratis bottle of spirits (choose from a list of available options), free one-time snacks, 24-hour room service and nightly turn-down chocolates from Venchi, an Italian chocolatier that partners with the cruise line.

Which MSC cruise ships have the Yacht Club?

club 19 yacht

Thirteen ships in the MSC Cruises fleet have the Yacht Club on board:

  • MSC Bellissima
  • MSC Euribia
  • MSC Fantasia
  • MSC Grandiosa
  • MSC Meraviglia
  • MSC Preziosa
  • MSC Seascape.
  • MSC Seashore.
  • MSC Seaside
  • MSC Seaview
  • MSC Splendida
  • MSC Virtuosa
  • MSC World Europa

Upcoming vessel MSC World America (2025) also will have the Yacht Club.

The largest Yacht Club in the fleet is on MSC World Europa, offering 152 suites. The second-largest is found on the line's two Seaside EVO Class ships, MSC Seashore and MSC Seascape, which each have 131 suites.

MSC Yacht Club cabins

club 19 yacht

All accommodations in the Yacht Club are labeled as suites, even though they comprise some standard cabin types. The specific stateroom types offered will vary by ship, but in general, they range from windowless interior cabins and deluxe balcony rooms to Executive and Royal Suites with more space, walk-in closets and bathrooms with both showers and bathtubs.

club 19 yacht

New to the fleet with the line's World Class are 1,600-square-foot Owner Suites, which include multi-room layouts, walk-in closets, bathtubs and balconies, each with a whirlpool and alfresco dining area.

Also new are Duplex Suites, offering two decks of space, with the bedroom and bathroom upstairs and a dining area, living room and guest bath downstairs. These also include two private sun decks with loungers, one of which boasts a whirlpool.

How much does it cost to stay in the MSC Yacht Club?

club 19 yacht

As you might expect, the cost to stay in the Yacht Club depends on several factors, including cabin type, the length of the sailing and where you're going and when. However, in line with the rest of the brand's pricing, a stay in the Yacht Club is an excellent value when you compare it to stays in other lines' dedicated suite areas or to luxury cruise prices.

I priced out several sailings departing over the next two years on some of the line's newest and largest ships. This is what was available at press time. (Note: MSC Cruises' website will only allow me to choose a general Yacht Club designation when booking. That means a guaranteed suite within the Yacht Club, but you won't know what type it is until closer to sailing.)

  • 7-night Caribbean and Bahamas cruise on MSC Seascape: $6,538 (including taxes) for two adults, round trip from Miami, March 16-23, 2024
  • 11-night Bermuda, Canada and New England cruise on MSC Meraviglia: $9,958 (including taxes) for two adults, round trip from Brooklyn, New York, Sept. 25-Oct. 6, 2024
  • 7-night Mediterranean cruise on MSC World Europa: $5,118 (including taxes) for two adults, round trip from Barcelona, May 2-9, 2025
  • 7-night Mediterranean on MSC Divina: $5,858 (including taxes) for two adults, round trip from Kusadasi, Turkey, June 5-12, 2025

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.

Composite of various judiciary members of Garrick Club

Legal profession’s most powerful among members of London’s men-only Garrick Club

Exclusive: Roll-call of gentlemen’s club, which bars women, includes judges, barristers and ministers

  • UK’s top civil servant and MI6 head urged to quit Garrick Club
  • Garrick Club’s members list reveals roll-call of British establishment
  • ‘It isn’t acceptable’: Garrick Club remains a bastion of male elitism

Some of Britain’s most powerful judges, including a serving member of the supreme court, along with about 150 leading barristers, are members of the Garrick Club, which has repeatedly blocked attempts to allow women to join.

The roll-call of the legal profession also includes five appeal court judges, eight high court judges, dozens of serving and retired judges, current and former ministers in the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) and numerous senior solicitors.

The Garrick gentlemen’s club has close association with the legal profession, but the full extent of those ties has never previously been made clear. Members say senior judges gather regularly at the club’s communal dining table. “Business is not meant to be discussed in the club – but it is,” one former member said.

The memberships of judges from England and Wales, revealed in a Guardian investigation, provoked anger from female lawyers.

Helena Kennedy, a barrister and Labour member of the House of Lords, said: “We should be outside the door with banners. It should be mentioned to senior level judges, who are supposed to promote fairness and equality, that it’s not appropriate to be in a club that does the opposite.”

The first female president of the UK supreme court, Brenda Hale, has previously expressed shock at how many eminent judges are members of the Garrick. She said judges “should be committed to the principle of equality for all”.

Christopher Bellamy, a Conservative peer and parliamentary under secretary of state in the MoJ, is a member alongside his Conservative colleagues Robert Buckland and Michael Gove, both former justice secretaries, and the former attorney general Dominic Grieve.

Several of the country’s most senior judges are members, including the supreme court judge David Richards, the appeal court judges Julian Flaux (head of the chancery division), Keith Lindblom (senior president of the tribunals), Andrew Moylan, Peter Coulson and Charles Haddon-Cave (chair of the independent inquiry on Afghanistan).

Garrick members often argue that they gain no professional advantage from membership because rules prohibit using the club for work. Others point out that they voted for women’s admission in 2015, when 50.5% of members were in favour, falling short of the two-thirds majority required for a rule change. A new vote is expected to be held in June.

Lady Kennedy said these arguments were beside the point. “The ice-cream tie they wear is a statement about exclusivity. It says: ‘I belong to a very special group of people.’ And that is about power. To exclude women from those arenas of power is unacceptable,” she said. The Garrick tie has salmon pink and cucumber green stripes.

The US federal code of conduct for judges states that they “should not hold membership in any organisation that practises invidious discrimination on the basis of race, sex, religion, or national origin”, adding that such membership “gives rise to perceptions that the judge’s partiality is impaired”.

“We should set out a similar set of principles to what they have in the US,” Kennedy said.

Lady Hale, who was supreme court president until her retirement in 2020, repeatedly called out her colleagues for their membership. “I regard it as quite shocking that so many of my colleagues belong to the Garrick, but they don’t see what all the fuss is about,” she told a law diversity forum.

The concentration of lawyers and judges in the club gave members access to gossip and knowledge that non-members could not access, she said in a 2017 interview . “My objections to the Garrick is not to a men-only club. It’s to judges being members of a men-only club. They wouldn’t dream of being members of a club that excluded people from ethnic minorities [or] a club that excluded gays, but for some reason they seem to think it’s OK to be members of a club that excludes women.”

High court judge members include Robert Miles, William Trower, Nicholas Hilliard, Christopher Butcher, Nicholas Lavender, Nicholas Cusworth, Robert Hildyard and Ian Dove.

Three deputy high court judges – Philip Havers, James Strachan and James Lewis – and at least a dozen circuit judges also belong to the club, as do the two lords David Neuberger, a former president of the supreme court, and Jonathan Sumption, a retired supreme court judge.

The club is symbolic of wider diversity problems within the judiciary. Official judicial organisations are sensitive about the slow progress towards introducing greater diversity into the profession, despite years of initiatives trying to do so .

An increase in the number of women studying law at university has meant that 59% of new junior barristers are women, but that ratio declines within the first five years of practice, in part due to the challenges the profession poses to parents. Only 20% of king’s counsels (KCs), the most senior barristers in England and Wales, and just two of the supreme court’s 12 judges, are women.

Although most of the judges who are Garrick members are in their 60s and 70s, the club continues to attract much younger lawyers at earlier stages of their careers, and a number of new KCs have joined in recent years.

Bar Council research has shown that male lawyers’ earnings are higher than women’s at every level of the profession, with women earning 17% less in the first three years of work and the differential stretching to 30% at 11–15 years. The research suggested the difference in earnings between men and women was not narrowing. It also found that the average black barrister earned markedly less than the average white barrister.

A government paper on diversity in the judiciary found that “individuals from an Asian/Asian-British or black/black-British background were less likely to be recommended for appointment relative to white candidates”.

“It has been 103 years since women were publicly granted entry to the bar, yet the tradition of exclusion on the basis of gender continues in private,” said a spokesperson for Her Bar , a new group working to support women’s careers as barristers that was launched by Nasreen Shah and Rachel Bale.

“This wilful exclusion of women from networking spaces has a profound effect on women at the bar, and often has the desired effect of triggering impostor syndrome, preventing women from even trying to penetrate a world that is wholly unwelcoming.”

Lawyers and campaigners have repeatedly attempted to raise the issue of the club’s membership rules, without success. Two years ago more than 300 senior lawyers signed an online petition at womenatthegarrickclub.org claiming the club contributed to “the gross under-representation of women at the top of the legal profession”.

Some female lawyers believe their male colleagues’ membership of the Garrick could have an impact on their sensitivity to legal issues affecting women.

John Mitting, the chair of the public inquiry into undercover policing examining the abuse of women by police spies, was called out for his Garrick membership at the inquiry’s opening session in 2020.

Questioning his ability to tackle issues of institutional sexism, Phillippa Kaufmann KC said: “Like many high court, supreme court, court of appeal judges, you’ve been a member of the Garrick Club, which expressly excludes women from membership.”

Andrew McFarlane was a member of the club in 2017. He was appointed to head the family division and head of family justice in 2018 and stopped being a member of the club at about that time.

The judges and ministers were contacted for comment. A spokesperson for the judiciary said: “The judiciary does not comment on the personal affairs of individual judges.” Buckland said the club was a place where members socialised and business was not discussed. The Garrick was also approached for comment.
