Sailing Charters to the Greek Islands
Greece is home to over 1400 islands running from isolated islets to some of the most famous islands in the world (Santorini or Mykonos anyone?). We guarantee, if you like sailing, you are going to love sailing in Greece!
One of the great advantages of sailing in Greece is the small distances between many of the islands. If you have a week (or even a weekend!) you may easily visit islands in the Saronic Gulf or the Cyclades from Athens. If you have longer than a week then take your time and relax, exploring your chosen islands in greater detail, or visit more islands to tick them off your holiday checklist!
For more information we invite you to browse our suggested sailing routes with details on popular island itineraries and sailing distances. For the more practically minded bareboat sailors, the fantastic Greek Cruisers Wiki offers many details on sailing in Greece and the marinas and facilities available on various islands.

History from 3,000 and more years has never really ignored Athens, from its regional domination as a city-state many Millennia ago to Rome and then subjugation by the Ottoman Empire until recent times.
Athens is a city of immense depth and breadth that could really only be understood with years of scholarship and exploration. Ancient ruins such as the Acropolis sit side by side architecture that has been built through the ages. Greek cuisine of flavours influenced by different ages and times and a laid back attitude that can bewitch the visitor as soon as they arrive until long after they leave.
As a seafaring nation, Greece has long had an influence on the maritime world. Shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis is a 20th Century example of the country's trading power that stems from as far back as Minoan times long before history was properly written. An Athens yacht charter can follow routes taken by millions over thousands of years and today you can enjoy the now or the past of whatever age of civilisation you seek.

The facilities are very good and infrastructure - and even many Greek island economies - built around it. You can get out to the DodecaneseIslands, Ionian Sea and the Argolic Gulf, all of which have great yacht charter infrastructure.
Whether on a bareboat, captained or crewed yacht charter, an Athens yacht charter can start at Alimos Marina, just 20 minutes from the city center. If you can, do spend a day exploring the main city before you head off - hit the Acropolisand nearby Marathon if you can as well as exploring the rest of the city.
A luxury yacht charter out of Athens can involve one of a number of ultimate destinations. Close-by to the southeast of the city, and best accessed from Laviron, the Cyclades Islands (pronounced 'kickladeez'), to include Paros, Naxos, Andros, Kinthos and Kea have ancient ruins from the days before Rome. They are extremely popular among yachtcharterers and you will find all manner of things from party towns to museums as you go.
The Saronic Gulf is to the northwest of Athens. Out of Alimos Marina, an island or coast-hopping sailing vacationwhere you can sail offshore to the Saronic Islands of Poros, Aegina, and Agistri as you explore this region.

Suggested Sailing Routes From Athens
The Cyclades Islands and Saronic Gulf are the primary destinations for those on an Athens yacht charter. Alimos Marina is a major charter yacht hub and is better than Olympic Marina Laviron for this, while Laviron is better suited to the Cyclades Islands.
7 days - Alimos Marina - Saronic Gulf - Spetses: With the very popular vacation island of Aegina as a first port, you then head SW across the gulf to Epidauros with its ancient ruins. Hydra is your next port of call with no cars allowed there and donkeys still the heavy transport mode of choice. Spetses itself played a major role in the recent Greek War of Independence, and still has the ruins of a Russian naval base. Island and coast-hop your way back.
7 days - Olympic Marina - Southern Cyclades: Kea is just a short hop from Laviron and can be done the evening you board the boat. There are a number of safe marinas and anchorages there so don't worry about being late! Mykonos is one of the best known Greek islands - do visit Little Venice where the sea goes right up to the buildings' walls. The nightlife is off the scale too! Loutra in Kynthos has hot medicinal springs and great coves for sea swimming.
14 days - Laviron to Santorini: The volcanic island of Santorini is one of the most famous sights in Greece short of the Acropolis. Heading out through the southern Cyclades islands including Paros, Mykonos and Aegean jewel of Ios, you will arrive in Santorini before turning west towards Folegandros, Serifos and Kynthos before returning to port.
Best Times To Rent A Yacht In Athens
The sailing season runs from late April to October with July and August being the busiest months for yacht charter. This is ironic as July and August can be the worst times to sail! Both extremely hot air temperatures and often hazardous Meltemi winds can make for big winds sailing when you honestly just want to hide from the heat.
The sea is cooler - often quite chilly - at the beginning of the sailing season but there is rainfall in Spring. As the days lengthen you will still see green fields and flowers in May and the winds can be quite benign too. Combined with the crowds being smaller, this suggests that May to early June are the sweet spot for an Athens yacht charter.
Come September and October the seas are still like a warm bath. However there are often water shortages on the islands and everything looks parched.
Sailing Weather In Athens
April to mid June: There is rainfall and the temperatures build steadily from the mid-teens to the mid 20 degree C range. There are sometimes gentle southerly winds, thoough these are replaced by ever stronger N-NW Meltemi winds that are rarely hazardous but make for exciting sailing at times.
Late June-August: You'll be unlucky if you see any rain, though it could be welcome in the summer heat! Temperatures are from 30s with recent hot days exceeding 40. The northerly Meltemi winds can be fierce and can hit F7 for a solid few days.
September-October: The seas remain warm and the Meltemi eases. These months can be the best time of year to sailas the temperatures are often in the comfortable low to mid 20s.
The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a captain, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.
Alimos Marina is the larger of the two marinas with a number of yacht charter companies working out of it. Use this for the Saronic Gulf, though you can explore the Cyclades too. Olympic Marina in nearby Laviron is half the size but better equipped, and is good for a Cyclades sailing vacation.
May to June are the best times of year to go on a sailing vacation out of Athens thanks to the comfortable heat and gentler sailing conditions. Most islands have water supplies too. July and August are fiercely hot and the Meltemi winds can be fierce, but even so are the most popular months for a boat rental in Greece.
You will typically pay 50% up front on reservation the yacht rent and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.
You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat rental before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.
If you want to sail without a captain then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a captained on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

Unveiling Hidden Gems: Athenian Waters Await
Greece, with its ancient historical sites and vibrant culture, is the jewel of the Mediterranean. To truly appreciate the grandeur of this unique location, one must traverse the waters that have played a central role in shaping its history. Here, we delve into the specific destinations that one might explore when embarking on a yacht journey from Athens.
🚢 Aegina: Island of the Temple of Aphaia
Nestled within the heart of the Saronic Gulf, Aegina is a haven of culture and natural beauty, just a short voyage away from the port of Athens. Known for its charming old town, vibrant fishing port, and stunning beaches, Aegina also plays host to the ancient Temple of Aphaia. This marvel of antiquity, predating the Parthenon, stands as a testament to the island's long history. For those fond of tranquillity, the southern coast offers secluded coves only accessible by yacht, perfect for a peaceful afternoon dip.
🚢 Hydra: The Artists' Retreat
As you sail southeast, you will encounter the idyllic island of Hydra. Here, the use of cars and motorcycles is forbidden, preserving a rustic charm that captivates visitors. With its cobblestone alleys, grand manor houses, and vibrant art scene, Hydra offers a delightful blend of tradition and creativity. The island's pristine coastline, dotted with secluded bays and hidden beaches, is a joy to explore via yacht, while the quaint harbor makes for a picturesque mooring spot.
🚢 Poros: The Pine-Covered Paradise
Continuing your voyage, Poros, a small island close to the Peloponnese coast, comes into view. It is famed for its lush greenery, which gives way to sandy beaches lapped by crystal-clear waters. Poros Town, with its iconic clock tower, offers panoramic views of the surrounding seascape, while the Sanctuary of Poseidon holds secrets of the island's past. The island's calm, sheltered waters make it an excellent stop for those sailing around Athens.
🚢 Cape Sounion: The Guardian of Athens
Upon returning northwards, a detour to Cape Sounion is a must. Dominating the southernmost tip of the Attica peninsula, the Temple of Poseidon, perched on the edge of a cliff, offers breathtaking sunset views over the Aegean Sea. The cape's secluded coves provide a peaceful retreat away from the crowded beaches, only accessible by those journeying by sea.
🚢 Spetses: An Island Steeped in History
As your journey continues, you would do well to steer your course toward the island of Spetses. Famous for its significant contribution to the 1821 War of Independence, it offers visitors a peek into a bygone era. The grand mansions, naval relics, and horse-drawn carriages paint a picture of times past, while secluded beaches such as Zogeria Bay provide a serene escape, perfect for a private mooring.
🚢 Kea: The Tzia of the Cyclades
Northwest from Athens, in the Cyclades archipelago, lies the island of Kea, locally known as Tzia. Less frequented by international tourists, Kea retains an authentic charm. Its capital, Ioulis, is a maze of stone-paved paths meandering amongst traditional houses. The island is also home to several archaeological sites, like the Lion of Kea and the ancient city of Karthea. Moreover, Kea's coastline boasts numerous hidden coves and pristine beaches, accessible mainly by sea, providing excellent spots for anchoring and diving.
🚢 Kythnos: The Island of a Hundred Beaches
Further west of Kea, Kythnos welcomes you with more than 70 stunning beaches, many of them only reachable by boat. This makes it a delightful destination for yacht enthusiasts. The island has two main villages, Chora and Dryopida, both offering a glimpse into the traditional Cycladic architecture. Don't miss the chance to moor in the captivating Kolona Bay, a thin strip of land creating a unique double-sided beach.
🚢 Corinth Canal: The Isthmus of Corinth
Finally, a yachting journey around Athens would not be complete without passing through the Corinth Canal. This impressive man-made waterway separates the Peloponnese from mainland Greece, providing a quicker passage to the Ionian Sea. The steep, rock-hewn walls of the canal create a unique, unforgettable spectacle for those navigating its narrow waters.
Each of these destinations, with their unique charms and offerings, make for an enriching yachting experience when exploring the waters of Athens. They serve as an alluring call to seafarers, whispering tales of ancient civilizations, natural grandeur, and a timeless connection to the sea. So, cast off from the familiar, and surrender to the allure of these marine paradises, waiting patiently to reveal their secrets.
A Profusion of Considerations: What to Mull Over Before Renting a Yacht in Athens
Renting a yacht, like any other endeavour, requires a degree of preparedness. One must first consider their level of experience and expertise. Yachting, while an extraordinarily rewarding experience, also demands a respect for the sea and its sometimes unpredictable nature. Safety measures should be paramount in one's mind. Many charter companies offer introductory courses to the uninitiated, ensuring that their clients are fully aware of their responsibilities on the water.
Budget is also a significant consideration. The cost of chartering a yacht can vary greatly, with factors such as the yacht's size, age, and level of luxury all playing a role. It would be prudent to also account for additional expenses such as fuel, provisions, and possible marina fees.
Then comes the matter of timing. The Mediterranean climate of Athens provides for hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. While yachting is feasible throughout the year, the summer months between May and September offer the best conditions for navigation and outdoor activities.
Finding the Perfect Vessel: The Ideal Yacht for Athenian Waters
The selection of an appropriate yacht is dictated largely by personal preference and the nature of the voyage you wish to undertake. The waters surrounding Athens are generally calm, punctuated by occasional winds that can kick up a bit of a swell.
For those seeking a sense of opulence and comfort, a motor yacht can serve as an opulent seafaring home, equipped with modern amenities and ample space. These vessels, often referred to as "floating palaces," allow for a luxurious experience, perfect for a leisurely cruise amongst the islands.
Alternatively, the thrill-seekers and seasoned sailors might opt for a sailing yacht. Here, one can engage in a more active seafaring experience, attuned to the rhythmic dance of the wind and the waves. These vessels, with their tall masts and billowing sails, conjure a sense of nostalgia, harking back to the days of the legendary Argonauts.
In conclusion, Athens serves as an enchanting starting point for maritime explorations. Renting a yacht here offers a unique opportunity to experience the Aegean Sea's hidden wonders at your own pace and in your own style. Be it a journey of leisure or an adventure steeped in the richness of history and natural beauty, the experience promises to be one that leaves an indelible mark upon the soul. As with all journeys, the key lies in preparation and choosing the right vessel for your seafaring odyssey.

The popularity of this location is understandable – you can see all showplaces in Acropolis (for example, Parthenon and Daphni Monastery), visit interesting excursions, and enjoy the unique atmosphere of the Old City. After that, you take a boat at the local port and go to explore the stunning surroundings of Athens and small islands , which are no less stunning than the capital of Greece is. In addition, thanks to the city’s settlement, you have a chance to sail in the Sardonyx gulf and the Aegean Sea. Moreover, sailing conditions in these waters are great. The Aegean Sea is considered to be the calmest sea in the world. Additionally, you will be pleasantly surprised with the cloudless weather but still mild climate.
The Best Time for Sailing Vacations in Athens
The best time for sailing vacations in Athens is a period of a warm half of the year. The most popular season for sailing is the second half of spring, the summer months, and the first half of autumn. The winter season is not appropriate for sail because of the windy weather at sea.
Difficulty Level
12 Knots takes care of customers regardless of their experience and skills in shipping. Therefore, it is possible to either crewed or bareboat yacht. The first option is obviously suitable for newbies or those who want to relax and forget about any difficulties. At the same time, experienced users select a bareboat charter in Athens . In this case, one should know that there could be problems with vehicle driving. The sea is unpredictable; so, you should be ready to cope with stormy weather. Therefore, do not choose a bareboat charter in Athens for the long term if you do not have enough experience in sailing . If you are an experienced captain and have a plan to visit other European coasts, then do not forget that you need to have an international sailing certificate like RYA Day Skipper, IYT Bareboat Skipper, ASA 104 plus IPC.
Of course, sailing vacation takes a little more effort for its qualitative organization. However, 12 Knots Yachting Club assures stable support during the booking procedure as well as the vacation period. More often, difficulties are related to the transfer activities in unfamiliar locations. So, it is convenient to select the option “Transfer on request” from the list of additional services. In this case, you will save your time and energy.

However, if you want to spend a weekend with your date, a boat with 1 cabin would be enough.
Powerboat is the best variant for tourists, who want to visit as many places as possible but do not have a lot of time, and those who prefer speed. Motorboats of all sizes with a professional crew are available for booking as well.
You can select one from 641 catamarans offered by 12 Knots if you are not planning a long-term trip. Yacht Charter Athens
Ancient, edgy Athens is a city well worth visiting. A major base for chartering a boat in Greece, it’s an exciting combination of ancient and avant guard. The iconic Acropolis dominates the city; a visible reminder of Ancient Greek heritage. The world-class Acropolis museum is a must and one for the best places to watch the sunset. Summer nights in open-air bars and restaurants ,the delightful Greek cuisine, the stark sunshine and shimmering seas is a heady combination and a promising beginning to a sailing holiday in the Aegean.
Museums and ancient sites are dotted all over the city if you would like to catch up on some history. Glamourous city beaches with an exciting after-dark scene await those looking for some fun.
Top-class, full-service marinas in the area accomodate everything from a simple sailboat to a megayacht motorboat providing safe, comfortable bases to start your sailing adventure from. Centrally located, the islands of the ArgoSaronic Gulf, the Cyclades and even the Dodecanses are accessible from here depending how much time you have.
Athens International airport is well connected to the rest of the world, especially during the summer months. Major bus and train stations are situated downtown and are connected to all the major cities and towns of Greece . The nearby ports of Pireaus and Lavros are connected by ferry to the Greek islands and Italy, and is a big and busy harbour.
Sailing Conditions
Sailing from an Athens charter base has many advantages. Being protected by the Attica peninsula and the Peloponnese, the winds on the Saronic routes are friendly and recommended for easy sailing. The proximity of these islands from Athens makes them ideal for a shorter boat charter. Although it gets very busy in high season, the area is well connected and makes picking up your boat charter easy.
Further south, the wind is stronger, offering more challenging sailing around the Cyclades. There are plenty of islands to explore - quiet and relaxed to busy and lively. Alternatively, a skippered or crewed charter with an experienced local skipper is recommended.

Mykonos' main attraction is undeniably its vibrant nightlife; amid its myriad seafront bars and clubs, partygoers dance till dawn under rose-gold skies. But this is not the island's only appeal.
Wander around the enchanting vividly-colored houses of Little Venice as the sun sets; savor a candlelit meal at one of its many fine-dining options (such as Nobu); and discover some of the magnificent bays such as Ornos . Of course, there are also a vast array of beaches to bronze on: from the iconic Paradise Beach to the hip and happening Psarou or the more tranquil Agios Sostis .
Vouliagmeni Yacht Charters
A Vouliagmeni yacht charter is highly exclusive, with the idyllic coastal town being a popular superyacht haven for vacations beginning or ending in Athens. Located 13 miles southeast of the capital, yacht charter guests can moor here with ease at its peaceful bay. It's an absolute must whilst you are here to take a dip in the emerald-hued waters of the lake, hugged by soaring cliffs and gently warmed by thermal springs. For the more adventurous, be sure to make the most of the bountiful underwater caves.
Santorini Yacht Charters
A Santorini yacht charter is a firm favorite amongst discerning travelers who fall in love with its endless, dramatic beauty at every turn. Dappled with whitewashed cottages and cerulean-hued domed churches tumbling down the hillsides of Oia to and up to the capital of Firá , guests have no shortage of backdrops for sunset tipples or sights to gaze at. Visiting the world-famous Red beach in nearby Akrotiri village whilst you are here is also a must.
Santorini is also superbly located for cruising towards the crystalline shores of Magganari beach on Ios island: an ideal location for snorkeling or taking out the toys.
Hydra Yacht Charters
Jetsetters have long adored Hydra for yacht charters , largely owing to its heavenly seascapes. The sheltered island enthralls guests onshore, who feel as if they have stepped into a bygone era: no cars roam around, just donkeys who hobble around its picture-perfect, labyrinthine streets and harbor. Soaring escarpments set the scene for sun-drenched meals under a lingering sun, with seafood served so fresh that it's practically dripping straight from the water. Admire also the innumerable secret coves and bays to be found here, many of which can be explored on your tenders.
Milos Yacht Charters
The luminous, volcanic island of Milos and its fabulously turquoise bays are a superyacht favorite, yet remain largely undiscovered to the wider public. But why do the elite cruise towards its shores? For the staggeringly beautiful beaches (more than 70 of them, in fact) perfect for bringing out the water toys.
The spellbinding Kleftiko bay , the geothermal Paliochori beach, and the surreal charms of Sarakiniko beach (with its moon-like surfaces flecked by countless caves) are popular spots here. Abound with ancient ruins, make sure you also pay a visit to the Catacombs of Milos near the village of Tripiti , and the achingly pretty hilltop Venetian Castle of Milos .

Who Goes on a Greece Yacht Charter?
Given its staggering popularity, a better question might be: who doesn't? For culture vultures, Greece is packed with majestic archeological ruins and attractions, for sun-worshippers, Greece is home to some of the world's most outstanding beaches that can be enjoyed by couples and families alike, and for hedonists, party havens like Mykonos are buzzing with famous nightclubs and bars.
History and Culture
Greece's location at the confluence of the East and West, as well as its Roman and Ottoman occupations, have had a huge cultural and historical impact that can be still felt today in terms of cuisine and architecture.
Greeks are fiercely proud of their heritage and culture. Marvelous regional traditions permeate mainland Greece and the Greek islands, ranging from religion to music, language to food and even wine, making a Greek yacht charter a truly thrilling experience.
Types of Yacht Charters in Greece
Greece has a very diverse yacht charter market, so you can be sure to find the perfect yacht for you and your charter party. There’s a wide variety of motor yachts for charter , as well as sailing yachts and traditional Turkish gulets.
However, be aware that all yachts wishing to begin or end a yacht charter in Greece must be in possession of a valid Greek charter license. Speak to a yacht charter broker for more information.
If you’re unsure about the type of yacht you’d like to charter, here are some things to consider first.
Motor Yacht Charters in Greece
For those looking to rent a motor yacht in Greece, you’ll find a wide range to choose from.
The most common type of motor yacht you can hire in Greece is a yacht with a planing hull. Stylish, sporty and speedy, they’re great for zipping between islands quickly and ensuring you get the most out of your itinerary. If you’re looking to spend most of your time on land or splashing in the sea, a yacht with a planing hull is the top choice for you.
You’ll also find a superb selection of displacement and semi-displacement superyachts at your disposal (pictured above). These are typically larger and more stable at anchor, with more onboard space for facilities and amenities such as gyms, movie theaters and wellness suites. They’re ideal if you’re chartering with a large group, particularly one that includes children.
Sailing Yacht Charters in Greece
Greece is a playground for sailing yacht rentals , with plenty of yachts available throughout summer. A combination of light winds, clear skies and plenty of anchorages create great sailing conditions across all the islands.
The most popular destinations for sailing charters are typically Corfu, Kefalonia , and the Sporades Islands . Other destinations are equally desirable, including the Cyclades and the Dodecanese islands - but be aware that these areas typically encounter more winds. This means it might be more challenging to drop anchor, and you will have to consider spending more nights in port.
Gulet Yacht Charters in Greece
A gulet is a traditionally Turkish-built sailing yacht made out of wood. They are usually two or three-masted and are typically much larger than your average sailing yacht. Luxury gulet yacht charters in Greece are very appealing alternatives to both sailing and motor yacht charter. While they usually rely on their motor underway, they are very fuel-efficient and don't require a lot of fuel to get from point A to point B. They have displacement hulls which make them very stable and seaworthy, and typically offer lots of volume and open-plan living spaces.
Greek gulet yachts also tend to be cheaper than other types of charter as they sometimes offer all-inclusive or semi-inclusive packages, meaning you don’t need to worry about additional expenses such as food and drink. They also normally include a standard number of cruising hours per day. Plus, their crew are often local to the region that they cruise in, meaning they can double as tour guides and have a lot of expertise and valuable insight into the area.
But be aware- many gulets are Turkish-flagged, meaning they will need to hold a Greek charter license to start or finish a charter in Greece.
How Much Does it Cost to Charter a Yacht in Greece?
The price of a Greece yacht charter vacation varies depending on a number of factors, including the type of yacht, the age of the yacht, and the month in which you choose to charter.
- A Greece motor yacht rental can range from $33,000 to $1.8m per week plus expenses
- A sailing yacht charter in Greece averages from $27,200 to $559k weekly plus expenses
In Greece, VAT on a yacht charter is charged at 24% and is based on the value of the yacht. However, this figure can be reduced if the yacht meets specific criteria.
The three tax brackets are as follows;
- VAT at full 24%: applies to charters that take place in Greek waters without exiting to non-EU or International waters (Staying within the six nautical miles limit)
- VAT at 24%: with a deduction option for time spent outside of EU waters or in international waters.
- Discounted at 50% (VAT 12%):for yachts that spend a minimum of 60 % of charter time/days outside of territorial waters. (Territorial waters are considered: six nautical miles from the mainland and six nautical miles from the territorial waters of an island). This also applies to yachts charters commencing outside EU territory and that remain outside for more than 60% of the chartered days and end their charter in Greece.
When is the Best Time for Greek Yacht Charters?
The best time for Greek yacht rentals is between July and August, but warm weather typically extends well into September and even May in certain destinations. The peak of the charter season is usually July, although August historically has the hottest temperatures.
Between June and August, you can expect highs of 85 - 90 degrees Fahrenheit (26 - 32 degrees Celsius) in Athens, with even hotter temperatures recorded further south.
Where Should I Begin My Greece Yacht Charter?
By far the most common embarkation point for a Greece yacht rental vacation is Athens . Around 90% of the Greek charter fleet has a homeport in Athens, and there are numerous luxury marinas that cater to superyachts.
However, for those looking to charter around the Ionian Islands in destinations like Corfu , Cephalonia and Zakynthos , you may wish to begin your charter closer to your desired destination.
It is possible to begin or end your charter elsewhere in Greece. However, you may have to consider the cost of repositioning as the fleet is mostly based out of Athens.
If you want to meet the yacht elsewhere – for example, Santorini, Mykonos – you can expect to pay a hefty repositioning fee. It’s generally more economical to begin your Greek yacht charter in Athens and spend the day cruising to your desired start point, enjoying your yacht to the fullest, and soaking up the scenery as you travel underway.
Where to Find a Yacht Slip in Greece
Around the main yachting hubs of Greece, you’ll find plenty of marinas that cater to a variety of yachts of different sizes. However, be aware that Greece doesn’t have as many big marinas as destinations such as the South of France or Italy , and demand for slips can be very high in peak season.
- Zea Marina: located in Piraeus, Athens, which is the largest seaport in Greece and one of the largest harbors in all of Europe. It's a hive of activity, offering 670 slips up to 150m.
- Athens Marina : revered marina, accommodating 130 slips measuring up to 130m. Provides plenty of amenities on land, including a helipad service.
- Flisvos Marina: award-winning and perfect for starting and ending a charter. Located 6km from Athens city center, with a 303 slip capacity (up to 70m). Well-equipped facilities and high-end restaurants at your disposal when you dock here.
- Kos Marina: close to the enchanting island's old harbor, this marina has a capacity for up to 250 slips with a maximum length of 80m. Provides an excellent array of facilities and dining options.
- Rhodes Marina: world-class marina complete with a stunning backdrop. Can accommodate a staggering 382 yachts with a maximum length of 120m.
Where to End a Greece Yacht Charter
Beginning or ending your yacht charter in Athens, one of the most exciting cities in the world, is a popular choice. Be sure to explore this historic destination in all its glory before you leave.
How to Book Your Yacht Charter in Greece
Greece is one of the most popular charter destinations in the Mediterranean. Therefore, advanced booking (three to six months ahead) is absolutely essential in order to secure your dream yacht on your preferred dates in the perfect destination.
When it comes to Greece yacht rentals, many charterers are repeat clients; meaning they’ve already booked the yacht once, fallen in love with the yacht and its crew, and chosen to return again to explore a new destination. This means that competition for yachts is fierce and it’s even more crucial to kickstart the booking process early.
Don’t forget that your choice of yachts in Greece is comparatively smaller than Italy or the South of France since all yachts beginning or ending a charter yacht in Greece must have a Greek charter license.
That said, it is possible for a foreign-flagged yacht to charter in Greece so long as the charter begins and ends in international waters, such as Italy and Albania for yacht charters around the Ionian Islands or Turkey for charters around the Aegean islands.

Greece Yacht Charter Q&A
Most itineraries for yachts around Greece begin in Athens because around 90% of the charter fleet in Greece has a homeport in Athens. Therefore, the yachts are usually based in the country’s capital, and you will most likely have to pay a repositioning fee if you’d like to begin elsewhere in Greece.
A Greek yacht charter license is a special permit that allows yachts to begin and end a yacht charter in Greece. Not all yachts hold a Greek charter license, so you will need to speak to your charter broker for more information about starting and finishing a charter in Greek waters.
You could start a yacht charter in Mykonos, but you will most likely have to pay a hefty repositioning fee as most yachts have their homeport in Athens. To get the most out of your yacht charter, it’s usually best to begin in Athens and spend the night underway to reach Mykonos.
The most popular destinations for sailing vacations in Greece are the Ionian Islands. However, great sailing conditions exist across the country, and other popular hotspots include the Dodecanese Islands, the Sporades Islands and the Saronic Islands.
The standard Value Added Tax (VAT) is 24%, and it is calculated based on the value of the yacht. The VAT can be reduced in certain circumstances; read our guide above.
The Cyclades Islands of Santorini, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos are great for exploring on a luxury yacht charter during summer. The best times to visit are between June and September when you can expect long days and warm sea temperatures. The beach clubs of Mykonos will be in full swing, and the island of Santorini will be alive with activity.
