Silver Seas Boat | 107' Burger 1998

SILVER SEAS is a 107’ Open Flybridge Burger motor yacht with a raised pilothouse. She boasts a wider beam than most of her sisterships, providing more salon space and larger side decks. Silver Seas has four staterooms, each with an ensuite, as well as accommodations for up to six crew members. There are various dining areas throughout the yacht, including informal dining in the country kitchen, formal dining in the saloon, and al fresco dining on the aft deck and flybridge. Silver Seas is offered in spectacular condition and is listed for sale because her owner is approaching retirement and wants a Burger with less air draft to easily transit to the Great Lakes, Canada, and the 30,000 islands every summer. This is an incredible opportunity to purchase a “turnkey” Burger with an excellent charter history for those who only desire the finest on the water! SILVER SEAS was originally built for the owner of an NFL football team; it was his second Burger. The next owner was a magazine publisher who owned many yachts, and the third was an ocean racing sailor who owned three prior Burgers himself. The current owner performed an 8-year restoration on his prior Burger. Upon taking ownership of SILVER SEAS, he performed a multi-year restoration on the 20-year-old Burger, completely overhauling the vessel and making her like new again. No expense was spared, and every detail was meticulously attended to during the restoration process. The cost of her comprehensive restoration approaches what SILVER SEAS originally cost to build. Burger motor yachts have a large and loyal following however, finding one in such excellent condition as Silver Seas can be a challenge for any buyer.  Frequently in yachting, a full paint job and major engine overhaul is called a “major refit.” The work on SILVER SEAS included these big-ticket items but also included refairing the hull before painting, removing and rebedding all windows, fresh varnish on all interior woodwork, installation of marble tile, new chrome plating on all interior brass hardware, upgraded high-end galley appliances, new electronics, new toys including jet skis and sea bobs and many more upgrades to ensure her complete rejuvenation.SILVER SEAS is the largest, newest, open flybridge Burger motor yacht available today. She is priced at about one-half her replacement cost, presenting a great opportunity for buyers.Key Features:

  • The largest Open Flybridge Burger designed by Don O’Keeffe on the market today.
  • Four staterooms with private ensuite and three crew cabins.
  • Underwent a comprehensive refit and reconstruction.
  • Dual Hawse pipe anchoring system for Mediterranean mooring.
  • Renewal of all AC ducting and air handlers.
  • New carpeting, flooring, and overheads, including insulation and soundproofing.
  • Major overhaul of both engines.
  • New hull fairing and paint job.

A  paneled staircase, in a gently curving radius, descends to the lower foyer for access to all four staterooms. In addition to the staterooms, a laundry closet is also accessed from the lower foyer. Master Stateroom The master stateroom is forward, with access from the lower foyer through double doors. There is a cedar closet aft to port and built-in bureaus to port and starboard, including book shelving and attractive window treatments. The king-sized master berth is centerline featuring a wooden headboard and nightstands with bookshelves above. The master stateroom is equipped with an independent audio/video system and access to the yacht’s central entertainment system for XM radio, CD, DVD, and satellite TV reception.  Guest Staterooms The additional three guest staterooms include one queen berth cabin to port, an upper and lower cabin to port, and a starboard cabin with oversized twin berths. All are beautifully appointed and feature private ensuites with showers, cedar closets, and individual temperature controls.    Crew Quarters Forward on the lower level and accessed from the galley/country kitchen area are the crew accommodations. Three double staterooms, including a captain’s cabin with a queen berth in the bow, are nicely appointed with top-quality joinery and cedar closets. The captain’s cabin has an ensuite head with a shower, while the other two crew cabins share a head and shower. The crew quarters are furnished with a built-in laundry station independent of the owner and guest area, which includes a fold-down table and sink to facilitate folding and cleaning of linens. Each crew cabin is furnished with its own temperature control system as well as audio/video systems, while the captain’s cabin is equipped with monitoring displays for communications, nav, alarm, anchor watch, and security systems. MAIN DECK Silver Sea's main deck level is surrounded by walkaround side decks with entry doors to the interior from midship watertight doors to port and starboard and through a single door from the aft deck into the main salon. AFT DECK The teak-planked aft deck is one of the focal points of the yacht for relaxing and al fresco dining. Wing doors are to port and starboard, opening to the side decks, while double stairs lead to the integral swim platform aft. A built-in, cushioned bench seat aft faces the high gloss, pedestal-mounted teak table forward with additional pull-up seating for up to ten. The wet bar with refrigerator and ice maker are built-in forward on the bulkhead. SALON AND DINING Upon entering the main salon from the aft deck, the overwhelming sense of elegance is immediately apparent. Surrounded by large, hardwood framed windows, intricately carved crown moldings, and valances, the expansive salon is a feast for the eyes both day and night, thanks to a variety of lighting options. Remote control blinds (individually controlled) provide transparent screening and blackout screening. Forward in the salon and separated from the lounge area by a  storage credenza is the formal dining area which is further offset from the rest of the salon by its paneled overhead. Additional storage is provided in a second cabinet outboard to port of the dining table. All table service storage is built with slotted, pullout compartments with locking détentes to ensure quiet, secure safekeeping while underway. DAY HEAD To port, forward of the dining area is the smaller of the two midship entry foyers. Inboard of the foyer can be found the nicely appointed day head. Outboard, a watertight passage door opens to the port side deck. Forward from the foyer is an interior door with access to the “electronics room” beneath the pilothouse. This area provides access to technology racks for audio/video and communications systems as well as providing a large volume of storage for provisions, equipment, and supplies. ENTRANCE LOBBY Opposite the day head to starboard is the vessel’s formal entry lobby from the starboard side deck. Spacious and well-lit, the lobby leads aft to the dining area and main salon, while forward is the galley and informal dining area. Access to the raised pilothouse is adjacent to the formal entry lobby. Custom removable child/pet safety gates from companionway to salon and guest staircase. RAISED PILOTHOUSE Raised up several steps from the main deck level, the spacious pilothouse provides an excellent view through five canted windshields forward and two large windows to each side. In addition, there are additional lower windows to port and starboard for added viewing of the side decks and seaway beyond. The pilothouse is paneled in beautiful woodwork. An upholstered l-shaped bench seat is aft, while the helmsman is comfortably seated on a  fully adjustable Stidd helm chair. The pilothouse reflects state-of-the-art technology for yacht navigation systems. The “black box” navigation electronics package is extensive, including a night vision camera that can recognize thermal, low light, and color imaging. Also included is Burger’s proprietary B.A.S.I.C.S. ship’s system, which can monitor a myriad of functions involving security, safety, electrical components, fluid levels, and fuel transfers. Additionally, Burger’s A.M.P.S. system manages generator and shore power functions and provides automatic, seamless transfer between the two.

Why is it said that Moscow is a port of five seas?

2024 Author : Angel Austin | [email protected] . Last modified: 2023-12-17 05:14

Many of us at least once in our lives have heard the expression that Moscow is a port of five seas. But if you pick up a map of the Moscow region, then no one will find a single sea nearby. Why did they start talking like that? Let's start in order.

In ancient times, there were no cars, no trains, no planes, and it was always necessary to deliver food and other various goods to cities. The fleet came to the rescue. Of course, ships in antiquity were not the same as they are now. Today they can swim against the current with the help of an engine, and earlier ships were dragged on ropes. This work was done by horses. A man harnessed and led them along the coastline. However, it was difficult for horses, but it was even more difficult for a person to do such work.

This fact is confirmed by a painting by Ilya Repin called "Barge Haulers on the Volga". On it, the artist depicted a crowd of barge haulers, exhausted by hard work, who pull the ship on ropes. Their faces were burnt from the scorching sun, their foreheads covered with sweat, their clothes turned into shreds from hard work. It is scary to think how much strength and he alth these people gave in order to transportcargo to where it is needed. Sometimes a person had to move loaded ships in this way even through forests and meadows in order for the ship to continue its journey along the river. Since then, the expression has gone that ships do not swim, but go.

Muscovites know that there is a town of Volokolamsk in their region. The name of this city consists of two roots "volok" and "llama". This settlement arose precisely in the transshipment place where the ship was pulled out of the water of the Lama River and dragged along the land to the Voloshni riverbed. Such navigation of ships continued for many centuries, but in the 18th century Emperor Peter the Great came up with the idea of building a special canal. But the first mention of the port of the five seas in history will be even later.

port of the five seas

Sovereign Peter the First came up with the opportunity to shorten the waterway for the ship. Imagine that from Moscow to Ryazan, a ship needs to sail not 200 kilometers, like a car, but much more. The thing is that the rivers are very winding, they have many twists and turns, so the waterway is longer than the highway.

Our emperor came up with the idea of digging a deep gutter in those parts of the river where it bends very strongly, then closing the old riverbed near the river, not letting water in, and filling the new gutter with it. This is how Peter's idea straightened out some rivers!

And indeed, this road was more convenient and shorter than the previous one. Surprisingly, such an idea made it possible to build waterways in places where they never existed. So that a person does not have to carry ships on himself,it was enough to dig a deep channel, and the highway for the fleet was erected.

You may be surprised, but the active sovereign nevertheless made such a project a reality. Under his leadership, the Vyshnevolotsk Canal was built. This body of water connected two rivers: the Tvertsa and the Tsna. So from the Volga the ships got into the B altic Sea. The port of the five seas was later built in the same way.

Sovereign Peter the Great at one time decided to connect the Moscow River and the Volga. But these plans were not destined to be fulfilled. In the 18th century, the emperor gave the order to draw up an estimate for the construction, and when it was prepared, having familiarized himself with it, Peter the Great said disappointedly: “However!”

The construction of such a canal at that time turned out to be very expensive and long, since there was no equipment that could do it quickly and without loss of life. And you and I are getting closer to answering the question: why is Moscow called the port of five seas?

moscow city port of five seas

Each of us knows that there is drinking water in the tap due to the fact that the city is built on the banks of the river. So it was with Moscow. On the threshold of the 20th century, the capital begins to develop so rapidly that the townspeople experience a shortage of clean water. The city authorities urgently needed to take any action.

And in 1931 it was decided to connect the main river of the capital with the Volga. Only she could help Moscow in this situation. The following year, the construction of the Great Moscow Canal began. The grandiose construction lasted 5years, and in the spring of 1937 the canal was successfully erected.

Its length was 128 kilometers. In the same spring, on March 23, the Volga was stopped for 3 minutes, and the canal was filled with Volga water. The Ivankovskoye reservoir was filled, on April 18, water from the Volga gave capital residents to drink!

It turns out that not all Muscovites know how long the water they drink has covered.

why Moscow is called the port of five seas

That's the answer to the question. The channel was opened during the reign of Joseph Stalin. This expression sounded from the lips of the head of the Soviet state. The meaning of this phrase was that after the construction of the Moscow and Volga-Don canals from the main city, you can get to:

  • Sea of Azov.
  • B altic Sea.
  • Caspian Sea.

the first mention of the port of the five seas

The status of "port of five seas" can be assigned not only to Moscow, but also to all those cities that have a water connection with the capital. These cities include Uglich, Volgograd, Kazan and so on. It was common for the Generalissimo of the Soviet Union to build such large-scale projects, so it was Stalin who came up with the idea to make the port of five seas in Moscow.

In Transit: Notes from the Underground

Jun 06 2018.

Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.

Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.

The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction Buying Tickets Know Before You Go (Down) Rules An Easy Tour

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Buying Tickets

  • Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
  • You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
  • There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
  • Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
  • If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
  • You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
  • You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring,  Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya.  Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

Take the 3/Green line one station to:

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

silver seas yacht iyc

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya.  This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

silver seas yacht iyc

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war.   The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

silver seas yacht iyc

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue  line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya.   Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

silver seas yacht iyc

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

silver seas yacht iyc

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

silver seas yacht iyc

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

silver seas yacht iyc

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar.  One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

silver seas yacht iyc

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

silver seas yacht iyc

Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.
