A superyacht named 007 has sunk after running aground off an island on Friday.

The 49-metre long vessel hit rocks off the Greek island of Kythnos and was seen lying on its side in the sea after the five passengers on board were rescued.

The James Bond-themed luxury yacht, which has a helipad, was seen lying semi-submerged about 15 metres from Kolona Beach, The Sun reports.

The boat hit rocks around 11pm on Friday and water then poured in as rescuers scrambled to get passenger on to another vessel and ashore.

The GPS reportedly malfunctioned and according to a local boat owner, the skipper then brought the vessel closer to shore.

“In trying not to be sunk, he sailed closer to shore, in less than ten metres depth, and that’s how the ship got to that position,” he said.

“No people were hurt. The coastguard was immediately aware and sent help in the night. Next morning they put up an anti-pollution perimeter.

“It appears there was no diesel leakage or damage to the scenery.”

The boat sails under a British flag but is owned by a Swiss businessman.

Anti-pollution barriers have been put in place in case of fuel leakage.

Local authorities will now conduct an investigation into the incident.

The 007 was delivered in 2006 by Bodrum-based shipyard Aegean Yacht but who owns it remains a mystery.

It has five cabins, including a master suite, and can sleep ten people.

The vessel was originally 32 metre long and called Royal Enterprise but underwent an extension.

It comes after the 39-metre superyacht My Saga sank off the coast of Italy after it was battered by a storm.

Nine people were rescued from the submerging vessel on Saturday as it sunk in the Gulf of Squillace, off the coast of Catanzaro.

Dramatic footage shows the superyacht on the water for a few moments before it completely sinks stern-first.

An investigation to determine what caused the vessel to sink has been launched.

73m James Bond-Inspired Superyacht 'Quantum of Solace' SOLD For $60 Million

By Heather Collier

Launched by Turquoise Yachts over a decade ago, the iconic 72.6m superyacht 'Quantum of Solace' has been sold once again and is due to be handed over to her new owner.

Listed for sale with Peter Thompson at Ahoy Club , FGI Yacht Group was also on hand to assist with Vice President Frank Grzeszczak Jr representing the buyer.

Quantum of Solace was previously owned by John Staluppi, Founder of Atlantic Auto Group. Staluppi has owned 21 yachts over the course of 30 years, all of which are named after the films in the James Bond Series.

Staluppi's second yacht, Octopussy , is officially the fastest superyacht in the world as of today, with a top speed of 61 mph (98 kph).

Upon her launch in 2012, she was the largest and most technologically advanced superyacht ever built by Turquoise Yachts . As one of the defining projects of the shipyard, she is still inspiring new designs there today.

H2 Yacht Design helped to collaborate on creating her strong graphic lines, flowing curves and an interior, which creates a clean and modern atmosphere when on board.

Built with steel hull and aluminium superstructure, her beam stretches across 12.23 metres to provide an open layout which introduces design elements such as her unique double-height atrium in the main salon.

Other such elements include the spa, which is positioned next to a sea platform which extends 90 degrees over the water to bring owners closer to the ocean. Here, those on board can make the most of a steamroom, shower, spa pool, treatment room and a spacious area for yoga.

Spread over four levels, she is replete with a range of contemporary facilities including a built-in DJ booth, a touch-and-go helipad, and spacious living areas. On the lower deck, there is an expansive beach club with a fold-down door and access to the Asian-inspired spa.

These open spaces feature a relaxed, comfortable yet modern approach to interior styling, with a mixture of light woods and fabrics with contemporary furniture moving through the various characters of the yacht’s individual areas. Furnishes are highly elegant and rich, as one would expect from a James Bond tribute yacht.

Matching tenders sit in the lateral garages, equipped with cranes and hydraulically activated doors for easy launching and retrieval from water.

Several morel formal and informal dining areas can also be added, both indoors and outside, a private cinema, a small concert hall, and more areas for entertaining and socialising.

Quantum of Solace offers accommodation for up to 12 guests in 6 cabins; consisting of a full-beam Owner’s suite as well as five guest cabins on the main deck.

The owner’s suite is located on the upper deck and features his and hers bathrooms, two opulent dressing rooms and a balcony on either side. Six staterooms can be found on the main deck, all with walk-in closets and stunning interior design by H2 Yacht Design.

Superyachts.com would like to extend our congratulations to her new owner and all parties involved.

Boat of the Week: This 238-Foot James Bond-Inspired Superyacht Would Make Q Proud

James Bond Yacht Quantum of Solace Aerial

A wry smile from Hollywood actor Daniel Craig is all that is needed to summon the image of James Bond. But if you mention a 007-themed superyacht , it’s the name John Staluppi that springs to mind. The recognition is well-earned. The serial yacht owner’s latest 238-footer, Quantum of Solace, comes with designs that even Q would marvel at.

The Brooklyn-born businessman has owned 27 boats over the course of 30 years and has named each of his superyachts after a James Bond film. The 118-foot For Your Eyes Only , built in 1985 by Denison, marked a step change from Staluppi’s smaller fishing vessels and was the first motoryacht in the US to have a combination of MTU engines with water-jet propulsion.

But it was his second 007-inspired yacht, Octopussy, that gave Staluppi fame outside the yachting world, and made the Bond names more than a gimmick. Built in 1988, the 144-foot Heesen had an earth-shattering top end of 61 mph—a speed that every other shipyard at the time said couldn’t be done. Octopussy immediately entered the record books as the world’s fastest yacht.

“That record was important to me because when you pull into any place there’s always a bigger boat or a prettier boat, but there’s not many people who can say, ‘Hey, this is the fastest yacht in the world,” Staluppi told Robb Report.

Over time, Staluppi has fine-tuned his requirements, saving adrenaline kicks for his cars, helicopters and jets. Today, he prefers his yachts to have a top speed of about 21 knots, transatlantic capability, and plenty of interior space. That’s exactly what Quantum of Solace provides.

Built by Turquoise in 2012, Quantum of Solace is one of just four yachts in the world to have a double-height atrium in the main salon. For Staluppi, who finds the excitement and gadgetry of Bond films a fitting association for his yachts, the design feature was a big draw. “I’ve never really seen that before and I just couldn’t imagine it. So that’s why I had to see the boat,” he says.

James Bond Yacht Quantum of Solace Pool

The contra-flow pool is another unusual feature that Q might have designed.  YPI

Staluppi bought the yacht almost “sight unseen” in 2019. “They were in Colombia and I said, ‘I’ll give you a $50,000 non-refundable deposit, bring the boat to the Bahamas on the way to Europe. If I like it, I’ll take it right on the spot. If I don’t, keep my $50,000,’” he recalls.

Staluppi liked the design a lot. Beyond the aesthetics, he is a pragmatist about his yachts. He noted that Quantum ’s garage was set up with user-friendly cranes, the beach club had door openings at water level. The boat also had a 16-foot contra-flow swimming pool “that you can actually swim in” and a professional DJ station on the sun deck that doubles up as a versatile heli-deck.

It’s also the first yacht that Staluppi and his wife have spent an unprecedented eight weeks aboard. When Covid-19 hit and his preferred cruising grounds of Europe closed, they traveled from Maine to Boston, around Nantucket and Greenport, and dropped anchor off of Martha’s Vineyard.

James Bond Yacht Quantum of Solace Top Deck

Over the years, Staluppi has moved from building super-fast superyachts to ones emphasizing space and comfort.

“I’m the last guy that wants to anchor out, but this boat is just so stable you don’t even know you’re anchoring. I never thought I’d be able to do that,” he says.

Years of being intrinsically involved with the design, build and sale of so many yachts has made Staluppi a sought-after consultant for both owners and shipyards. In 1998, he launched his Millennium Super Yachts fleet, in which he built yachts to order. “It’s important to have a good design from the beginning, so you don’t have to have many changes,” he says. “Of course, that’s almost impossible. Anytime you build a boat, you know you’re going to have anything from $400,000 to $2 million in changes.”

From his personal builds, 2004’s World Is Not Enough is one of his favorites. “The truth of the matter is, World Is Not Enough was the fastest yacht that we’ve ever owned; it’s just nobody ever went up to that speed,” he says. Capable of 77 mph on paper, technical issues with the boat’s steering hampered its performance.

James Bond Yacht Quantum of Solace Beach Club

The laid-back but luxurious Beach Club and Spa areas would work well as a setting in a Bond movie.

Spectre , built in 2019 by Benetti, came close to being his “perfect yacht,” but the top deck felt too small for Staluppi’s liking. By the time he realized that was the case, the build was too far along. Now, the serial yacht owner is focusing on his next project, which promises to have a multitude of Bond gadgets.

“I always say this is the last boat I’m building and then I’m building a new boat again,” Staluppi says. “Sometimes I get the urge to build a fast yacht again, but you give up a lot of luxury, and now I’m more into having a nice bottle of wine and a meal on board. If I want to go fast, I have a 92-foot Pershing for that.”

James Bond Yacht Quantum of Solace Main Salon

The sense of space throughout Quantum of Solace ‘s interior was a key feature for Staluppi, who bought the yacht virtually sight unseen.

Staluppi has listed Quantum of Solace for $58 million with Yachting Partners International to make space for the new unbuilt yacht. The Turquoise-built yacht is actually the second with the same name. Staluppi made the decision name it Quantum of Solace , after the then-latest Bond movie, No Time To Die, was released. “I didn’t want to have a boat named that,” he says.

Speaking of which, does knowing that his yachts will always have to be connected to a 007 movie title ever bother Staluppi? “No,” he says. “I kind of enjoy it.”

Sunken but not stirred.

Footage captured the calamitous moment that a massive superyacht named “007” sank — with five passengers inside — in Greece

The maritime disaster occurred Friday night after the 160-foot vessel, which reportedly sails under a British flag but is owned by a Swiss businessman, experienced a GPS malfunction off Kythos Island, SWNS reported. This reportedly prompted the captain to bring it closer to shore than was advisable.

As a result, the James Bond-themed luxury boat hit the rocks, and began taking on water with five passengers inside.

“In trying not to be sunk, he sailed closer to shore, in less than 10 meters depth — and that’s how the ship got to that position,” explained a boat owner who witnessed the catastrophe.

Accompanying footage, uploaded to YouTube, shows the swanky vessel, which sports a helipad, lying half-sunken on its side around 50 feet from the nearby Kolona Beach.

The pleasure cruiser hit the rocks off Kythos Island, Greece at around 11pm on Friday.

Thankfully, all five passengers were rescued and transported to safety before the “007” sank. “No people were hurt,” described the aforementioned eyewitness. “The coastguard was immediately aware and sent help in the night.”

Rescuers also erected an anti-pollution perimeter in the area, although there was reportedly “no diesel leakage or damage to the scenery,” the bystander said.

The luxury vessel boasted a helipad, five cabins including a master suite, and other features befitting its James Bond namesake.

Local authorities will launch a probe into the sinking of the “007,” which was delivered in 2006 by the Bodrum-based shipyard Aegean Yacht, but whose owner remains unknown.

Along with a helipad, the superyacht reportedly boasts five cabins, including a master suite, and can reportedly sleep ten people.

This isn’t the first time a luxury vessel has visited Davy Jones’ locker of late. Last month, heart-pounding footage emerged of a 130-foot superyacht capsizing and sinking stern-first into the water off the Italian coast.

In February, a Ukrainian man was arrested for partially sinking his Russian tycoon boss’s $7.7 million luxury super yacht in Spain in protest over the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine.

James Bond-Themed Superyacht Called '007' Sinks Within Yards of Greek Beach

"In trying not to be sunk, he sailed closer to shore," a boat owner who watched the event unfold said of the captain's actions

Five passengers aboard a superyacht named in honor of British superspy James Bond had to be rescued after it capsized and began sinking yards away from a Greek beach Friday.

The 160-foot superyacht named "007" experienced a GPS malfunction around 50 feet from the beaches of Kolona Bay on the Mediterranean island of Kythnos, SWNS reported.

"They say that the captain had some depth problem and he hit the bottom," a boat owner said about the vessel's captain, per SWNS

"In trying not to be sunk, he sailed closer to shore, in less than 10 meters depth — and that's how the ship got to that position." Thankfully, nobody was hurt in the incident, added SWNS.

"The coastguard was immediately aware and sent help in the night," the local continued, per SWNS.

"Next morning they put an antipollution perimeter," the boat owner continued. "It appears there was no diesel leakage or damage to the scenery."

According to SuperYacht Times , the "007" was developed by Aegean Yachts in 2006 and can accommodate up to 10 people. It also has a steel hull and aluminum superstructure.

In true James Bond style, however, the identity of the owner has not been revealed.

The sinking of the 007 follows the demise of a 131-foot superyacht named My Saga, which capsized nine miles off the coast of Catanzaro, Italy in August.

Shocking footage released by the Italian coast guard showed the vessel sinking stern-first near the Catanzaro Marina.

According to the BBC , "the Italian coast guard rescued all nine people on board – four passengers and five crew. The outlet reported the ship was heading from Gallipoli to Milazzo.

An investigation of the incident is ongoing and it is still unclear what caused the yacht to sink.

You could say that 2022 has not been a good year for superyachts in general, and you wouldn’t be completely off the mark. In between seizures and legal complications, and what seems like an increased number of totaling incidents, superyacht-watching has definitely gotten more… dramatic this past year.

who owns superyacht 007

We can now add another incident to that ever-growing list: 007, a superyacht delivered by Aegean Yachts in 2006, has sunk after running aground off the coast of Greece. It happened on Friday night (September 2), with reports in the local  media  saying that the captain hit rocks under the surface of the water.

The ship is now almost completely submerged in Kolona Bay in Kythnos, in the Cyclades island chain in Greece, only some 15 meters (49.2 feet) from the beach. The Greek Coast Guard has confirmed the incident but, for the time being, it can’t speak on the circumstances surrounding it – and for very good reason, since an investigation into the cause is still underway.

who owns superyacht 007

The good news is that the five people onboard the vessel were rescued by the Coast Guard and transported to safety. The other piece of good news is that Coast Guard personnel was able to contain the superyacht with a floating sea wall, and there have been no reports of pollution as of the time of press. Given the location of the wreck, it is very likely that a recovery operation will be attempted.

The captain called in for help after running aground, as the ship started taking on water. Shortly afterwards, 007 listed on the port side, and eventually capsized. Photos and videos have emerged on social media showing the extent of the damage, and you will find some of them included in this article.

who owns superyacht 007

007 is a 49-meter (160-foot) superyacht that wasn’t available for charter, but was often described as the perfect family boat. Initially delivered as a 32-meter (105-footer) under the name Royal Enterprise, at the Bodrum shipyard in Turkey, it’s been through several refits, which have contributed to its current explorer-like, more aggressive silhouette. These refits included a lengthening of the hull to 49 meters (160 feet), adding another deck, and a small touch-and-go helipad on top.

who owns superyacht 007

With a design by Yavuz Mete, 007 offered accommodation for 10 guests and 5 crew. Powered by twin Caterpillar engines that developed a total of 1,300 hp, it could travel at a top speed of 12 knots (13.8 mph / 22.2 kph). None of that matters now, as it’s come to what could possibly be its end on the rocky shore of Greece.

The best James Bond Boats and Yachts (2024 update)

spirit-f-bond-007-luxury-yacht-2

If you frequent the high seas, then you are certainly familiar with James Bond movies. After all, this iconic franchise has become synonymous with what it means to lead a life of luxury and danger. From speed boats to submarines and everywhere in between, Ian Fleming has given us some of the most memorable watercraft used by Bond himself throughout his adventures for more than 50 years now. In this blog post, we’ll take a look at some of the best James Bond boats and yachts that have been featured in recent 007 films – both large vessels like The World Is Not Enough’ super yacht as well as small ones such as Live And Let Die’s’ hydrofoil! So fasten your seat belts and get ready to explore these larger-than-life vessels from the world’s top spy!

From Russia With Love (1963)

One of the most memorable boat chases occurs in From Russia With Love . A young Sean Connery and Tatiana Romanova were traveling to Venice when the bad guys assaulted them. But Bond made a spectacular escape aboard a Fairey Huntress .

From Russia With Love - James bond yacht

The speedboat is part of the Fairey Marine catalog. Created by English sailing enthusiasts, the company produced boats until the early 1980s. Its first motor cruiser appeared in the 1960s.

This James Bond boat sequence helps publicize the Fairey Huntress and the Fairey Huntsman motorboats. They became widely popular, and won multiple offshore races. They were the craft of choice for Royal Naval Skippers.

Live and Let Die (1973)

The Glastron GT150 featured on Live and Let Die movie poster is crucial for the 007 boat history. Roger Moore drives the speedboat through Louisiana everglades and makes a 120ft leap over the pursuing Sheriff’s cars.

Live and Let Die, James bond - Glastron GT150 yacht

26 boats were used to create this iconic sequence, and 17 were destroyed during the shoot!

The Glastron GT 150 used to establish the world record was sold just after the shooting. It is now the property of the Ian Flemming Foundation, and it was part of James Bond’s vehicle exhibition in London.

For safety reasons, we don’t recommend these kinds of stunts with speedboats while you are on sailing vacations. But you can still experience high-speed sensation and jumps with water toys. Learn how to choose among them here!

The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)

In this Bond movie, the boat is, in reality, a Lotus Esprit. This beautiful white car is one of the best British sports cars of the 1970s. Q turned it in an incredible vehicle. It turns into a submarine to escape an attacking helicopter.

Filmed in the Bahamas (Nassau), the underwater scenes feature the extravagant vehicle that can fire torpedoes and anti-aircraft-missiles.

Golden Eyes (1995)

The Manticore yacht is the villain’s lair seen in GoldenEye . Most of the scenes were filmed in Monaco. The actual luxury yacht is the Northern Cross , a 142ft boat built in Sweden in 1991.

Designed by Tor Hinders and Per Kavli, the motorboat has a top speed of 24 knots and a cruising speed of 18 knots. The accommodation is designed to sleep up to 10 guests over five cabins.

The crew cabins accommodate up to 8 people. It was the property of a Finnish businessman before it was refurbished and sold for $7 million in 2006.

The World Is Not Enough (1999)

In the longest Bond pre-title sequence, Pierce Brosnan is chasing Giulietta da Vinci’s Sunseeker Superhawk 34 .

Driven down the Thames at 60mph, the motor yacht is wiped out by mini-torpedos. The Superhawk 34 used in The World is Not Enough was for sale in January 2012 for $150,000.

After this film, the collaboration between the film producers (EON Productions) and the boat company becomes more notable.

Sunseeker is a major boat builder for the sports and leisure markets in the world. The James Bond franchise helped the British luxury brand to become an international icon.

Casino Royale (2006)

In the 2006 James Bond film, several luxury yachts appeared. Among them, there are the Sunseeker Predator 108 and Spirit 54.

The Sunseeker superyacht is the villain’s “floating lair.” It was filmed on location in the Bahamas. With over 100 feet long, the performance yacht has four cabins, one master suite, and it can accommodate up to eight guests.

Full-scale models of accommodation on board were built for the film studios in Prague.

The large-scale sets were mounted on a large hydraulic platform to simulate the movement of the sea during filming.

In 2017 the yacht was for sale at $4.2 million.

Daniel Craig and Eva Green also sail casually into Venice on the elegant Spirit 54 . This classic British 54-foot yacht was handcrafted in Suffolk by S pirit Yachts . She sleeps up to six guests in two en suite double cabins.

It has to be shipped to Miami, then Barbados and Croatia before finally arriving in Venice. It is also the first sailing yacht to go up the Grand Canal in over 300 years.

After the shoot, the luxury boat was used for cruising and racing, mainly in the UK and Ireland.

Skyfall (2012)

In SkyFall , Daniel Craig and Severine (Bérénice Marlohe) sail on the Pruva Regina yacht gliding through Turkey’s sapphire waters.

The actual superyacht is a 183-ft schooner built in Turkey by Pruva Yachting in 2011.

Regina has a maximum speed of 12 knots, and she can accommodate 12 guests in two master suites, two double staterooms and two twin cabins plus nine crew.

This James Bond yacht was listed on sale in 2012 for $14 million.

Fun fact: the shower scene which is supposed to take place aboard, was filmed in room 712 of the Four Seasons Hotel at Canary Wharf in London.

No Time to Die (2021)

In No Time To Die, released in 2021, the 007 yacht is called Spirit 46. She is a very beautiful 14m sailing yacht that is initially designed for fast-pace racing. Clearly a true match for an adventurer such as James Bond.

In 2021, it seems that James Bond is going back to its old love from the Casino Royale time, the modern yet classic wooden sailing yacht.

The yachts named after James’ Bond movies

Although our article is intended to list the yachts that have been featured in a James Bond movie, you might also encounter boats that were named with one of the James Bond movies, without actually being a part of the movie.

John Staluppi is the most emblematic case of a James Bond fan that decided to show his passion through the naming of its yachts. As such, he named all of the 18 yachts that he owned over his life after James Bond movies.

Like James Bond, John Staluppi likes his yachts fast. To be more precise, he likes them unusually fast compared to their respective size.

One of his most famous posessions include yachts called :

  • For Your Eyes Only : a 36m yacht that could go over 30 Knots
  • Octopussy : a 43m yacht that can reach 50 knots
  • Moonraker : a 36m that can sail at 57 knots
  • Casino Royale : a 49m luxurious yacht
  • Skyfall : a 57m superyacht with 3 VIP suites
  • Diamonds Are Forever: a 61m motoryacht available for luxury charters

It seems that John Staluppi, like many of us, made the realisation that sailing a yacht truly makes you feel like you are part of a James Bond movie. Luckily, your yacht doesn’t have to be featured in a Hollywood movie or to bear its name for you to feel that way.

The famous Riva boats in the James Bond movies

Since the middle of last century, luxury Italian boat maker Riva has become a cornerstone in Hollywood blockbusters. From classic runabouts to modern variations with wooden cladding and impressive technical characteristics, their boats have been featured alongside stars like Clark Gable and Chris Hemsworth – all encapsulating style, wealth and status on screen.

Riva boats have been making a splash in the Bond films since Robert Moore first took up the mantle of 007. In 1995, Pierce Brosnan starred as James Bond for “Golden Eye” and with him came Riva ! Daniel Craig later paraded around on one too when he stepped into his version of Agent 007’s shoes in “Casino Royale”. Over time these beautiful vintage yachts continue to gain more admiration from film-lovers everywhere; even now with many new movies about our beloved secret agent coming out each year – so does their presence remain over all that time.

Spectre: On Board the 69m Bond-inspired Benetti superyacht

The newest of 007-named boats built for John Staluppi, Spectre is much more than just a pretty face. It’s what you can’t see that truly impresses, discovers Cecile Gauert

It was a perfect day for a yacht cruise. The sun shone brightly over the Tuscan coast and a breeze brushed softly across the blond teak decks. But the group on board Spectre was disappointed. They did not fancy Martinis at the bar or a soak in the pool. What they wanted was wind and waves.

The captain did his best to produce a wake and crossed it repeatedly, but it was no big challenge for the sophisticated stabilising system aboard the new 69-metre Benetti. It took several outings to get the kind of conditions most guests would rather not encounter but finally the technical team had their wish and naval architect Frank Mulder was amazed. “Holy [cow],” he remembers thinking, “there is no pitching at all.”

One of the highlights of this handsome five-deck, 1,403GT yacht lies where it will seldom be seen: under the waterline. Spectre is a luxurious full displacement yacht with some unusual speed characteristics and a sophisticated ride control system, commissioned by a man who’s been known to chase (and set) speed records with his superyachts, John Staluppi.

Since the days of the 42-metre, 67-knot The World is Not Enough he launched in 2004 under his own brand, Millennium Superyachts, Staluppi has moved away from speed for speed’s sake, but he is still very keen on getting the most out of his machines.

“She’s done 21.5 knots, which is pretty impressive for a yacht of her size,” he says about the newest addition to the growing family of boats bearing a James Bond name and John and Jeanette Staluppi’s special touch.

In many ways, Spectre expands upon the qualities of 61-metre Diamonds are Forever, a full displacement yacht they built at Benetti in 2011. With a top speed of 16 knots, Diamonds was conceived as a yacht that would give owners, guests and charter clients the best of everything. Its luxurious interior had two big VIP suites, a lift and a spa.

With Spectre , they wanted all of the comfort and some, plus more speed. They returned to Benetti to build the new project. The Staluppis added to the team a Dutch naval architect they had trusted for many years, Frank Mulder of Mulder Design.

Mulder has worked on nine boats with John Staluppi, starting with the speed-record-setting 40-metre Heesen Octopussy in 1988. When it came to Spectre , Mulder recalls John Staluppi telling him, “I want a boat that cruises 20 knots, can go places, is spacious, good and comfortable.” His brief dovetailed very well with the work that he and son Bas had been doing at the time, fine-tuning hulls with good efficiency and comfort over a wide speed range.

“We feel that the times of extremely high speeds are over, but cruising at a good speed is different,” Mulder says. “It is nice when you have a boat that is basically a displacement boat, feels like a displacement boat, and looks like one with a normal interior, no honeycomb or whatever, and then you reduce drag to make a very efficient hull that is around 30 per cent faster than a normal displacement boat.

“Typical 69-metre boats usually do 17 knots, that’s the bread and butter speed. [ Spectre ] does 21 knots... but those 17-knot boats cruise at 15 knots and this one cruises at 20 knots, so it’s a lot faster,” he says. “The long-range speed, 12 knots, for when you want to cross an ocean and the crew is on board and doesn’t want to burn a lot of fuel, is also an important point.”

Spectre has a range of 6,500 nautical miles at 12 knots, burning an average of 260 to 290 litres per hour at this speed. Powered as she is with two MTU 12V 4000 M93s (small engines for her size), she can go 19, 20 knots “forever” and consistently tops out at around 21 knots, pure white statuario marble and walnut burr included.

“What we have is a machine that really burns a lot less fuel over the entire speed range. It is far more efficient not only at 21 knots, but also at 15 knots, and 12 knots, 10 knots, so it is a much better hull. We’re very happy, very proud; it’s a good machine,” Mulder says.

Uncharacteristically missing a sea trial before the handover in November due to a scheduling conflict, John Staluppi was on the phone with his representative, Mike Britton, to get the latest on performance. “[ Spectre ] handled unbelievably with the ride control; it’s incredible,” Staluppi says. “It’s probably one of the best things that we did.” It was done in the pursuit of more comfort.

Going faster means feeling the effect of waves more, says Mulder, who worked closely with Naiad to make Spectre the first yacht fitted with a comprehensive ride control system. Naiad originally developed its system for the military market, later expanding to commercial vessels, such as passenger ferries, says Steve Colliss, general manager of Naiad in the UK. Applications have been made to a few yachts, including the trimaran White Rabbit. However, “ Spectre is the first one of its type with a full-blown system. It’s probably the most sophisticated we’ve done in the yacht market,” Colliss says.

The system is designed to mitigate all undesirable movement from waves with three interceptors at the transom, a pair of fins around midship for conventional roll damping and forward canards used for pitch damping in conjunction with the interceptors. “It’s this combination that makes it unique.”

“We did the full tank testing for the model and we knew exactly where things stood before we started construction,” says Britton, who supervised the build of Spectre , his fifth project with the Staluppis. “We also spent the extra money on the propellers.” The yacht’s top-of-the-line VEEM propellers have built-in interceptors that are designed to correct pitch because every incremental improvement matters to these owners. “John is always looking for the latest technology, speed and comfort,” he says.

There are many extras on board, including two large television screens in the upper saloon, among some 30 in total, all managed by an entertainment system by Videoworks, a sleek carbon-fibre-clad paperless bridge by Team Italia with foldable screens and a large digital chart table. But this being a project closely managed by John Staluppi, two of the highlights are the engine room, clean and shiny with brightwork, and an outstanding garage. Larger than the average London flat, it covers 110 square metres of the lower deck, with 2.1 metres of headroom and a more than nine-metre-wide portside door that forms a side terrace, expanding the garage into a luxurious waterfront space.

A project with and for the Staluppis tends to push shipyards to get out of their comfort zone and try new things. This was the case with Spectre , according to the Benetti team. The builder adopted several weight-saving techniques that saved around 150 tonnes overall, says project manager Marco De Cosmo.

“Since the structural hull was built, all the major materials were weighed, including the filler outside, and a report was produced each month to help predict the performance,” he says. Aluminium replaced heavier plywood supports for the interior and the gearboxes were made in aluminium instead of steel.

However, a big part of the weight saving was the structure itself, designed by Mulder Design and built according to their drawings using a “different philosophy” – simplifying it, it uses thinner plates and more frames for equal strength and less weight.

Even with a displacement yacht, saving weight is a big plus. “If you build five to seven per cent lighter, you save five to seven per cent fuel,” Mulder says. Except for honeycomb marble, which is ubiquitous on today’s superyachts, the interior is what Mulder calls “normal”, which is to say luxurious in every way, from the materials used to the grand dimensions of guest spaces.

The yacht’s exterior deck lounge areas are ultra-spacious, the stairs are wide and gentle to climb but the yacht also has a guest lift with a delightful chime. “I love the elevator, the garage space is incredible, everything about this boat is something I wanted to do,” Staluppi says.

The exterior stylist, Giorgio Cassetta, worked on numerous iterations (54 to his count) before the final design for a five-decker that reconciles a large interior volume with sporty exterior lines. “The big challenge was to try to make something which looked graceful and proportioned, and at the same time, satisfy this urge for huge volume and huge shaded areas,” he says.

“We tried to design her as something as balanced as possible so that the exterior design would influence the interiors and vice versa without anything predominating on the whole concept. When you look at her in real life, she looks sporty, she looks aggressive. If you sit at the very end of the bow and look back at the superstructure, she looks like a US bomber rather than a boat. But at the same time, she’s a big, imposing, safe-looking yacht, not a small boat grown to a bigger size,” Cassetta says.

“There’s a very nice correspondence between the exterior design and the interior functions, so there’s no big fake black glass on the outside. Everything that looks black [glass], or almost everything, leads to some light being transmitted to the inside. And we made sure that you could really enjoy these windows. From the master bed, you can actually see the bow tip because we’ve designed all these windows with a low bottom frame so that you could enjoy the view while lying down, which is quite a privilege.”

Britton reveals the “million-dollar” view as he presses a button and the curtains neatly fold to unveil a private spa pool, the helideck with an "S" for Spectre at its centre, the bow and the water beyond it. A second master is forward on the main deck, full beam and identical in size. All but two of the owner and guest cabins are on the main deck and above. Adding to the big expanses of glass are the tall ceilings, which exceed two metres everywhere.

The high-contrast decor by Benetti’s interior architect Domenico Gavagnin in close consultation with the Staluppis is a modern take on the art deco style prevalent in 1930s Florida, with stainless steel and etched glass details, light-hued fabrics by Armani as well as sconces by Lalique against a high-gloss walnut burr. All the interior pieces were custom designed for the yacht and Evan K Marshall added a finishing touch with artwork and accessories. One of the challenges, De Cosmo says, was to find a consistent pattern in the amazing walnut burr that covers the guest bulkheads, all coming from trees harvested in Germany.

The light art deco theme continues outside with custom-made glossed teak furniture. The owner’s deck is a fantastic air-conditioned space for dining, with “girls” and “guys” conversation areas. One level above, on the bridge deck, the fun continues with a bar facing a large jet pool in a nest of sunpads, and more dining space next to a pizza oven and a grill. Aft on the main deck is an elevated lounge area, inspired by the Staluppis’ previous yacht Skyfall .

“The whole thing about this deck is that it’s very nice when you [arrive here] because this cockpit is so long you really feel like you’re on a big boat,” Cassetta says. “I even gave up on some length in the main lounge to have the longest possible cockpit here. It’s where you welcome your guests, so it had to be proper.”

There isn’t much here that cannot sustain an active charter programme or satisfy an owner who likes to entertain. This was the Staluppis’ plan all along when they conceived of this yacht, whether for themselves or for someone else.

John Staluppi may be known as a “car guy” but he is also in the boat business. “Every time I build a new boat, I put it for sale. It’s just the way I do things, but I love the boat and I want to show it off.” He did that pretty well: after this article was completed, it was announced that Spectre had been sold. But it seems unlikely this will be Staluppi’s last superyacht adventure.

Building Bridges

To create a modern wheelhouse with the latest technology, the project team worked with TEAM Italia on a custom, clean integrated system called I-Bridge, which adapts to each captain’s preferred set-up with easily interchangeable views.

The high-definition screens tilt up and down or lay flush in a console clad in carbon fibre. Another impressive component is an IMO-approved 46-inch chart table, which is multifunctional and interactive and allows the sharing of trip-planning information and “infotainment” with guests. All controls are neatly organised and condensed, including three redundant 4K 32-inch touch panels for steering and onboard safety systems such as sprinklers, watertight and fire doors, and three multifunction controls with joggers, trackball and OLED systems used for radar, electronic chart display, CCTV and thermal cameras. The fully integrated system extends to the wing stations, which are also equipped with touch panels.

His luxury vessel, the 463-foot Al Mirqab, holds the title of the world’s most expensive superyacht.

Built in 2008 by German shipbuilder Peters Werft, this impressive yacht is complete with 10 luxurious cabins, a conference room, cinema, and all the amenities one would expect from a vessel of this magnitude.

In addition, the Al Mirqab features a helipad, swimming pool, and even an outdoor Jacuzzi.

With a price tag of over $400 million, the Al Mirqab is one of the most expensive yachts in the world.

In addition to the Emir of Qatar, there are several other notable owners of superyachts.

Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos all own luxurious vessels.

Bezos yacht, the aptly named The Flying Fox, is one of the longest superyachts in the world at a staggering 414 feet in length.

The Flying Fox also comes with a host of amenities, such as a helipad, swimming pool, spa, and multiple outdoor entertaining areas.

Bezos also reportedly spent over $400 million on the vessel.

Other notable owners of superyachts include Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, who owns the $200 million Kingdom 5KR, and Oracle founder Larry Ellison, who owns the $200 million Rising Sun.

There are also many lesser-known owners, such as hedge-fund manager Ken Griffin, who owns the $150 million Aviva, and investor Sir Philip Green, who owns the $100 million Lionheart.

No matter who owns them, superyachts are sure to turn heads.

With their impressive size, luxurious amenities, and hefty price tags, these vessels have become a symbol of wealth and prestige.

Whether its the Emir of Qatar or a lesser-known owner, the worlds superyacht owners are sure to make a statement.

Superyachts come with all the comforts of home, and then some.

How Much Do Superyachts Cost?

who owns superyacht 007

When it comes to superyachts, the sky is the limit when it comes to cost.

These luxury vessels come with hefty price tags that can range from anywhere between $30 million to over $400 million.

So, if youre in the market for a superyacht, youre looking at an investment that could easily break the bank.

The cost of a superyacht is driven by a variety of factors, including size, amenities, and customization.

Generally, the larger the yacht, the more expensive it will be.

Superyachts typically range in size from 100 feet to over 200 feet, and they can be as wide as 40 feet.

The bigger the yacht, the more luxurious features and amenities it will have.

Amenities also play a significant role in the cost of a superyacht.

While some owners prefer to keep their yachts out of the public eye, others have made headlines with their extensive amenities.

From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, the sky is the limit when it comes to customizing a superyacht.

The more amenities a superyacht has, the more expensive it will be.

Finally, customization is another major factor that will drive up the cost of a superyacht.

Many luxury vessels have custom-designed interiors that are tailored to the owners tastes.

From custom furniture and artwork to lighting and audio systems, the cost of a superyacht can quickly escalate depending on the level of customization.

In short, the cost of a superyacht can vary widely depending on its size, amenities, and customization.

While some may be able to get away with spending a few million dollars, others may end up spending hundreds of millions of dollars on their dream yacht.

No matter what your budget is, its important to do your research and find out exactly what youre getting for your money before signing on the dotted line.

Keeping Superyachts Out of the Public Eye

When it comes to owning a superyacht, some owners prefer to keep their vessels out of the public eye.

Understandably, these individuals are concerned with privacy and discretion, and therefore tend to take measures to ensure their yachts are not visible to outsiders.

For instance, some superyacht owners opt to keep their vessels in private marinas, away from the public areas of larger ports.

Additionally, some yacht owners may choose to hire security guards to patrol and protect their vessels while they are moored or sailing.

In addition to physical security, some superyacht owners also use technology to keep their vessels out of the public eye.

For example, a yacht owner may choose to install a satellite-based communications system that allows them to keep their vessel completely off-radar.

This system works by bouncing signals off satellites rather than transmitting them, making it virtually impossible for anyone to track the yachts movements.

Finally, some superyacht owners also choose to limit the number of people who have access to their vessels.

For instance, the owner may only allow family members and close friends to board the yacht.

Additionally, the owner may choose to employ a limited number of staff to help maintain the vessel and keep it running smoothly.

These individuals may be required to sign non-disclosure agreements to ensure they do not disclose any information about the yacht or its owner.

Overall, while some superyacht owners may choose to keep their vessels out of the public eye, there are still plenty of other ways to show off the opulence associated with owning a superyacht.

From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, there are many luxurious amenities that can make a superyacht the envy of any jet setter.

A 160ft James Bond-themed superyacht named 007 has sunk just yards off a Greek beach.

The vessel, which is thought to be owned by a Swiss businessman but was sailing under a British flag, ran aground after hitting rocks just 49ft off the picturesque Kolona Bay on the island of Kythnos.

The boat's GPS allegedly malfunctioned and led the boat towards the shore before it started listing heavily on the port side as water started pouring in.

Coast Guard answered mayday calls and the five passengers on board were quickly rescued after it started sinking on Friday evening. By Saturday, the yacht was almost fully submerged.

The vessel has a top speed of 12 knots and has five cabins including a master suite.

A local boat owner told SWNS press agency: 'They say that the captain had some depth problem and he hit the bottom.

'In trying not to be sunk, he sailed closer to shore, in less than ten metres depth, and that's how the ship got to that position. No people were hurt.

'The coastguard was immediately aware and sent help in the night. Next morning they put an antipollution perimeter. It appears there was no diesel leakage or damage to the scenery.'
