RYA Day Skipper Theory Online Course

This course is invaluable for learning how to start making decisions onboard a yacht or powerboat and also to help understand what is going on when others take charge. By the end of the course you should have a sufficient theoretical knowledge to navigate a yacht or powered craft around familiar waters by day and night. This course is recommended for those wanting to brush up and develop existing navigation and skippering skills and those progressing towards the Advanced Powerboat, Powerboat Instructor and going on to do the Day Skipper Practical course on sail or powered vessels.

Pre-requisites

None, but the RYA Essential Navigation course may be of use.

What's Involved?

This is an eLearning course, but one of our RYA instructors is on hand to provide as much support as you require, this is done predominately by email, but catchups by phone/zoom etc can be organised at pre-arranged times.

How Does It All Work?

At the end you need to sit tests. If you need this qualification commercially please talk to us as you may need to be invigilated. On successful completion, you will receive your certificate in the post.

RYA Day Skipper

Course duration: 5 days.

The RYA Day Skipper course will prepare you to skipper a yacht for the first time.

By the end of the RYA Day Skipper practical sailing course you will have learned the skills to skipper a small yacht in familiar waters by day and be able to charter a yacht in the UK or abroad.

5-Day Practical RYA Day Skipper   The 5-day practical RYA Day Skipper course will take you through basic skippering techniques, under the watchful eye of your RYA instructor. You will learn the essentials of navigation, pilotage, anchoring, mooring on both pontoons and buoys, man over board recovery and experience some night sailing and navigation.

9-Day Combined Theory & Practical   If you don't already hold the RYA Day Skipper Theory certificate, consider our highly popular 9-day Combined RYA Day Skipper Theory and Practical Course; you will complete the theory syllabus in our on-site classroom then set sail whilst the theory is still fresh in your mind.

Our sailing courses are run on a modern 37ft yachts in superb condition, complete with onboard heating for Winter dates. Courses start and finish at our Port Hamble Marina base.

You will stay on board during the practical course as you explore the Solent and South Coast, visiting a variety of marinas and bays to experience different mooring scenarios.  All courses finish 4pm on the final day.

Pre-requisites

• Minimum age 16.
• 100nM, 5 days and 4 night hours on a sailing yacht.
• RYA Day Skipper Theory or equivalent level of knowledge (theory included as part of 9-day).

The RYA Day Skipper Theory Course is perfect for anybody looking to master the basics of chart work, navigation, meteorology, collision regulations, and seamanship. Our classroom-based course puts you before an experienced instructor and allows you to immerse yourself in the subject over six days.

Having completed the course, you will have the knowledge and confidence to navigate a yacht in familiar waters during daylight. If you want to complete the Day Skipper Practical Course, we recommend completing the Day Skipper Theory first.

Being part of a group you will learn from others and have the benefit of seeing our safety procedures and electronic equipment we use on our yachts.

Course content includes:

• Introduction to the chart, Latitude and Longitude, navigation equipment, books, and publications.
• Chartwork, plotting a course.
• Different methods to fixing your position.
• How to use electronic chart plotters and navigational equipment.
• Plotting an Estimated Position and a Course to Steer, taking into account tide and wind.
• How to create a passage and pilotage plan from scratch.
• Meteorology and how to interpret a weather forecast, and local weather effects, sea breeze, and fog.
• I.R.P.C.S (rules of the sea)

The rya day skipper shorebased theory course can be taken in the classroom or online, rya day skipper shorebased course overview:.

The RYA Day Skipper Shorebased theory course will help you become involved with onboard navigation and passage planning or become a skipper. This course is aimed at;

• Those new to boating (yachting, keel-boating, motor boating, power-boating or coastal rowing) and
• Those who already have considerable crewing experience and now want to progress

The RYA Day Skipper Shorebased Course (aka RYA Day Skipper Theory Course) is the ideal starting point for aspiring skippers (and their first mate), either motor or sail. The word “shorebased” in the title gives you the clue that this course is taken either in the classroom or online away from the many distractions of flapping sails, noisy engines, waves and other water users.

The Day Skipper Shorebased Course aims to provide students with sufficient knowledge to enable them to navigate around familiar tidal and non tidal waters by day and prepares students for progression onto the RYA Day Skipper Sail Practical, RYA Day Skipper Power Practical or  RYA Powerboat Intermediate Courses.

COURSE DURATION

The RYA Day Skipper Theory Course takes five days or 40 hours to complete. We offer the course in a variety of different formats, allowing you to choose the option that best suits you:

• Five consecutive days usually starting on a Saturday or a Monday
• Twin Weekend ; the first weekend runs Saturday to Monday, the second weekend shortens to just Saturday and Sunday
• Night School ; attend once a week for thirteen evenings during the winter months OR attend a two-day weekend followed by 8 evenings.
• Online with Skippers Online, for those who can not give up the 5 days for the classroom. The Day Skipper Shorebased online E-Learning course takes 40-50 hours to complete and can be undertaken at your own pace, over a period of up to 6 months. This online course is delivered by Skippers Online and support is provided by an RYA Instructor.

The RYA Day Skipper Shorebased classroom based courses are held at our training centres in Southampton and Helensburgh. The online version is on your PC, Mac or tablet.

WHAT ARE THE PRE REQUISITES FOR THE RYA DAY SKIPPER SHOREBASED COURSE?

The Day Skipper shorebased theory course is suitable for beginners. However, it is preferable that you have at least a few days experience crewing aboard a keelboat, powerboat, sailing or motor yacht.

WHAT IS COVERED ON THE RYA DAY SKIPPER SHOREBASED COURSE?

The Day Skipper Shorebased course is a navigation course for beginners wanting to progress to Skipper level (either sail or power). The RYA syllabus is designed to introduce students to:

• Basic seamanship
• A basic knowledge of lights
• Meteorology

When taking a RYA Day Skipper Shorebased Theory course with Chieftain Training, students will have the opportunity to use the real kit; our classroom is equipped with live Garmin GPS chart plotters and we integrate traditional (paper chart) navigation with the more modern electronic navigation throughout the course.

Day Skipper training at Chieftain Training is comprehensive. We aim to make life as easy as possible for our students and provide the following within the course:

WHAT RATIO IS THE RYA DAY SKIPPER SHOREBASED COURSE TAUGHT AT?

The RYA allow centres to run with up-to 12 students on this course. While this works for night school we find it is far too many for our 5-day and weekend courses so we limit the class size to 8, which means you each get a double desk to spread your charts out on. In reality the class size is often smaller and we run with as few as two students.

A skipper does much more than navigate. They are responsible for the complete safety and wellbeing of the yacht and crew. These responsibilities include weather forecasting, victualling, engine maintenance, sail selection and handling, passage planning, watch keeping, navigation and pilotage.

Your extremely experienced and patient instructor will teach you all these skills and you will put them into practice as you skipper the yacht on short passages around the coast.

There is particular emphasis on boat handling for Day Skippers and during the course you will practice mooring under various conditions. Students live aboard for the duration of the course and visit different anchorages to practice pilotage techniques which, like boat handling, is an essential skill for the aspiring day skipper. You will also complete at least 4 night hours sailing to experience night pilotage and identify lights.

This is very much a hands-on course, with little time to teach navigation or other theoretical subjects. It is therefore recommended that you take the Day Skipper Shorebased course prior to your practical course so you can put those skills into practice on the water.

This course will also enable you to apply for the ICC (International Certificate of Competence). This qualification is required by most European countries to validate your competence to own or charter a boat. The ICC, obtained by presenting your RYA Day Skipper certificate, will cover sailing yachts up to 24 metres in length in coastal waters

What is the rya day skipper theory course.

The RYA Day Skipper theory course is a classroom navigation course. If you want to be Captain, you need to know this stuff.

The course requires a minimum of 40 hours study and this is made up of both classroom time and homework assignments.

There are also two exams during the week that need to be passed in order for you to get the completion certificate. Our Knowledge Cards will give you a great head start on these.
