Nordhavn Yachts

Nordhavn offers a full line of true deep-sea passagemakers with more than 15 models ranging from 40 feet to 120 feet in length. In 2001, Nordhavn became the first builder to take one of its own boats, a smaller N40, around the world in 27 weeks. One of the company's most known boats was named Nordhavn, Norwegian for “North Harbor”, because of its resemblance to the North Sea fishing trawlers.

Jim Leishman, Dan Streech, and Joe Meglen formed a small brokerage in Dana Point, California in 1974, today known as PAE (Pacific Asian Enterprises). PAE began its operations by importing Transpac Yachts from Taiwan. Yacht designer Al Mason was the appointed naval architect for PAE’s first project. The Mason 43 sailboat was the first PAE/Mason design, followed by the M63, M53, M53cc, and M33. Between 1978 and 1985, PAE/Mason built 132 “3” series sailboats.

In the late 1980s, during the decline of the cruising sailboat market, the PAE team began designing the 46 Nordhavn (N46), a new kind of powerboat. The boat was named Nordhavn, Norwegian for “North Harbor” because of its resemblance to the North Sea fishing trawlers. By early 1989, Hull #1 of the N46 was completed and shipped, and in 1993, it was sold to an Indonesian industrialist and delivered to Singapore. PAE’s second Nordhavn design was the N62, which was accepted by Ta Shing in 1991. Luxury tax made it a slow start for the second N62 order. Nearly 18 months later, when the tax was repealed, Hull #2 was ordered, and N46 orders were coming in fast, commencing the “golden 90s.” Steady growth allowed for the launch of the N50, produced by South Coast in 1995, and the N57, built by Ta Shing in 1996.

Nordhavn Yachts are a widely popular and successful long distance cruising vessel, but it wasn't until the 1970s that the predominant view in yacht cruising circles would change from feeling that trans-ocean crossings and long-range passages could only be made successfully in sailing yachts.

The 50s and 60s were filled with published tales of ocean crossings cruises by small-yacht sailors like Blondie Hasler, Robin Knox-Johnson, Thomas Fleming Day, Harry Pidgeon, and Alain Gerbault (http://www.bwsailing.com/bw/cruising-news/great-voyages-in-small-boats/) — not to mention globe-girdling cruises by pretty ordinary couples such as Eric and Susan Hiscock and Lin and Larry Pardey — sailors all.

Then in 1963, naval architect, Robert Bebee, designed and built for himself in Singapore a modest 50-foot power yacht, “Passagemaker”, upon which he proceeded to cross oceans, eventually putting some 50,000 nautical miles under her keel before publishing his landmark book, Voyaging Under Power, in 1975.

At the time, Dan Streech, Jim Leishman, Joe Meglen (later joined by yacht designer, Jeff Leishman) were building sailing yachts in Taiwan for the U.S. and world markets as Pacific Asian Enterprises (PAE). Bebee’s concept of passagemaking in small power yachts caught their attention because, among other reasons, power cruising was less arduous and therefore more accessible to those who didn’t want to fight to tie down a triple-reef in a 700 square foot mainsail in a half-gale, didn’t want to do without air conditioning, and especially didn’t want to wallow in calms waiting for the winds that came at the leading edges of storms. To them and to others in yacht cruising circles, Bebee’s concept of power cruising made sense — and eventually, in 1989, the first Nordhavn, a 46-footer, was designed and built.

A Trawler Is as a Trawler Does

Nordhavn reasonably claims to offer the most complete line of “true deep-sea” passagemaking yachts on the market today, with more than 15 models ranging from 40 to 120 feet LOA. The company has stuck steadfastly to using a full-displacement hull form, which in the tradition of true fishing trawlers, carries more underwater volume, hence greater load-carrying capacity than many of Nordhavn’s competitors.

One can argue all day long about the comparative advantages of full-displacement versus semi-displacement. However, the fact remains the bulk and mass of a full displacement hull produce a somewhat easier motion at sea, and they have the ability to carry the higher profile and upper-deck pilothouse found on the larger Nordhavns. As well, the greater interior volume, generally present in a full displacement hull, affords advantages in terms of tankage and other stowage, as well as in terms of interior accommodations.

Of course, the piper must be paid, and in the case of a full-displacement hull form, that payment takes the form of a sacrifice in speed for any given hull length, especially when you combine a full-displacement hull form with the higher displacement-to-length ratio normally found in trawler-style yachts.

Still, there are many who believe that the trade-off is well worth it and that the benefits far outweigh any minor limitations in speed. And in any event, the argument goes, the average sea-going speed of a Nordhavn is still higher that that of a cruising monohulled sailboat of similar length.

Stout Isn’t Just a Drink

Nordhavn uses solid FRP laminate in the hull below the waterline with vinyl ester for improved moisture impermeability — and with heavy molded longitudinal stringers and transverse stiffeners placed relatively close together for maximum structural rigidity. Again, the full-displacement hull form and higher displacement-to-length ratio provide the load-carrying capacity to tolerate this stout form of construction.

An additional benefit of higher load-carrying capacity is the ability to build in a greater amount of what is usually heavy sound damping material. So, not unexpectedly, Nordhavn emphasizes sound attenuation in its yachts, which can admittedly make a big difference when running day in and day out for several days or even weeks when making a passage.

A distinctive feature of the Nordhavn yachts is their dry exhaust. In most yachts, a wet-exhaust system is used. With wet exhaust, seawater is pumped into the exhaust system just immediately downstream of the exhaust manifold. (The exhaust manifold itself is usually a double-walled or jacketed casting that carries closed-circuit cooling water in its jacket passages, while the hot exhaust gasses are carried out via the manifold’s innermost passages.) This injected water helps cool the hot exhaust gasses as they pass through the muffler(s) and exhaust piping also works to dampen the transmission of engine exhaust noise.

In contrast, Nordhavn utilizes insulated piping and mufflers (silencers) to quiet the exhaust and carry it up past the upper deck and exhaust it directly to the air — reminiscent of what you might see in the exhaust system of a large semi-rig tractor. The advantage is, according to Nordhavn, that no water is drawn into the yacht for the exhaust system and, therefore, related safety and corrosion issues are minimized.

What’s in a Brand?

Truth be told, a lot. A highly reputable brand such as Nordhavn didn’t get that way by not delivering on its promises. It didn’t get that way with sub-standard construction or an indifferent selection of fittings and equipment. That Nordhavn has built an exceptionally strong brand in the trawler-yacht market means a lot if your considering the purchase of a used vessel of that kind.

But brand strength notwithstanding, there are still a multitude of factors to consider in arriving at a decision — not the least of which is how to get the most value for the expenditure you’re making. In 1973 in Dana Point, California when two men, —Jim Leishman and Dan Streech —who had been working at a yacht company, came across the other and became friends. Since they both adored the ocean — having each racked up many, many offshore sailing miles and created a strong seafarer bond with similar boating experiences in their history.

Jim and Dan moved on as the brokerage they worked with closed in 1974. They teamed up with Joe Meglen and opened a boutique brokerage in Dana Point. This would eventually become known as the Pacific Asian Enterprises. This yacht brokerage was responsible for the importation of the highly esteemed Transpac 49. In an eight-year span, there were 35 of them imported, sold and delivered

Soon after, Jim’s younger brother, Jeff, who in highschool, joined PAE part time. He assisted the shipyard with the commissioning of new boats, deliveries and even with a sketch-drawing when needed.

The design work was done by an employee who stepped down from PAE, leaving Jeff to spend more and more time there and on his drawing work when in 1982 he went on full time at PAE where he redesigned many of the models to work better for all and even designed his very own as part of his final class grade!

Step forward to 1998, and just in time for PAE to recruit the Southern California sailboat builder, Pacific Seacraft (PSC). They soon built their hottest creation, the Nordhavn 40—with an increase in volume then others her size. Jim and Jeff bounced idea after idea off each other to design this boat.

Then, Hull #21 became the most famous of them all and was named, Nordhavn. She cruised 26,000 miles in the Around The World project in a 27-week period in 2001-2002. The ATW allowed prospects to take a run out on her to see how they liked what they were looking for.

Next up, the Nordhavn 43. This fabulous boat reflected Jeff and Jim’s style and benefitted from the many lessons they learned before to make for a more perfect vessel now. N40 sales continued to sky rocket and production stayed steady. Sadly, in 2004, in Xiamen, China, they shipped the N40 molds to the new South Coast Marine factory.

The 1990's proved to be wildly successfully especially with the Nordhavn model launches.

Having delivered over 400 models, they all continue to get five star reviews especially in sea-worthiness and reliability. Their shipyard produces all types of custom yachts. More About Nordhavn Yachts

Nordhavn Yachts developed out of the friendship between Jim Leishman and Dan Screech in 1973 while they were working at a yacht dealership in Dana Point, California. A year later, Jim and Dan opened their own brokerage with the help of Joe Meglen, another friend, a venture that would eventually develop into Pacific Asian Enterprises. The group got its start importing Taiwanese Transpacs, later developing their own models of sailing yachts in collaboration with shipyard Ta Shing Yacht. The trio’s engineering and boat maintenance backgrounds allowed them to work closely with the shipyard to improve and ensure the quality of the boats, which they worked on personally alongside the Taiwan builders.

This was the catalyst for a new strategy that was reflected elsewhere in the marine industry: Jim, Dan and Joe would develop, design, and oversee the production of new models from start to finish. This new approach enabled PAE to create its own line of sailboats in partnership with talented naval architect Al Mason. Mason was a natural choice: he trained under John Alden, who had designed the Malabar VII, a 40-foot yawl the Leishman family had sailed on for a year after Dan graduated from college.

With the help of Mason and the president of Ta Shing, Jim and his friends would produce their own model, the Mason 43, before either of them was 30. The Mason 43 was a roaring success, the beginning of a long and fruitful partnership with Mason that would produce 132 sailboats over the next decade. But this was just the beginning: in 1978, Jim’s brother Jeff Leishman joined the firm. A true prodigy, Jeff was involved in design work for PAE before he was out of high school, aided by a natural genius for drafting and drawing. By the time Mason retired in the late 1980s, Jeff had completed his naval architecture degree from the Yacht Design Institute and joined the firm full time.

Nordhavn was born when Jeff and Jim discovered the work of Robert Beebe, a US Navy captain who theorized that small displacement power boats could cruise long distances. Everyone knew it was possible, but no one had done it – not until the Nordhavn 46 was launched. Inspired by Beebe’s theories, the Nordhavn 46 began as Jeff’s senior project, which was so innovative that PAE’s original shipyard contractor refused to build it, blinded by the commonly held belief that offshore cruising could only be achieved by sailboats. Jeff and the team fought tirelessly to realise the project, deeply convinced that a 46-foot powerboat built for long distances would be the salvation of the declining cruising sailboat industry. They were right. Once realized, the Nordhavn 46 – so named for its resemblance to North Sea fishing trawlers – was immediately met with fanfare from Beebe enthusiasts and Mason loyalists alike. Since then, Nordhavn’s innovative approach, informed by a genuine user-focused loved for sailing, has continued apace. NORDHAVN MODELS

Nordhavn 43

In 2002, Jeff and his team boarded the legendary Nordhavn 40 and embarked on a PAE-crewed 26,000-mile circumnavigation. The Nordhavn 43 is the result of all the lessons learned on this journey, a new and updated version of the earlier model. PAE has expanded the interior space, added three feet of water line length, and increased the fuel capacity by 300 gallons to improve the vessel’s range. Comfort and living space are also a priority – perhaps a result of living on the smaller N40 for 172 days – with a master stateroom and two guest cabins. The wheelhouse, too, is expanded here, with space for a large helm chair to maximize the captain’s comfort on long expeditions. A spacious saloon has been designed to provide lounging space for up to eight guests across its port and starboard settees, which can be used to sleep extra guests. True to its roots, the Nordhavn is built for world cruising, with a maximum speed of 8.5 knots and an ocean-crossing speed of 7 knots – perfect for any intrepid navigator.

Nordhavn 52

This stout 52-foot trawler has been designed with serious seafarers in mind. Form and function are completely merged in this vessel: the reverse pilothouse windshield will swiftly deflect waves and spray, the tough lead ballast in the keel will allow the boat to right itself even in the worst conditions, and the sturdy windows are made of 12 millimeters of tempered glass, ensuring exceptional watertightness. Though the boat itself is built like a tank, the interior prioritises comfort and liveability, fitted out with warm, dark wood. The Nordhavn 52 has a few layout options, with two or three cabins, making it perfect for family and friends. The 165-horsepower Luggar engine and wing engine for emergencies makes the Nordhavn 52 the ideal choice for carrying out long cruising expeditions in safety and comfort.

Nordhavn 80

One of PAE’s latest offerings, the Nordhavn 80 proves once again that the firm is at the cutting edge of yacht design. Created in combination with Vripack, a forward-thinking Dutch design and naval architecture firm, the Nordhavn 80 is sure to attract a new generation of yacht owners while retaining its universal appeal. Inspired by the Scandinavian concept of hygge, a unique sense of comfort and chic coziness, the result is one of the most modern, stylish interiors ever seen in a yacht. Sophisticated, white floor-to-ceiling wainscotting throughout the interior gently contrasts with the light hardwood stairs and cabinetry, perfectly complimenting the generous natural light provided by large hullside windows. More traditional, dark wood options are available too. Four staterooms and a two-person crew cabin ensure ample space for long voyages on this immaculate superyacht. Nordhavn Yachts for Sale

Originally a small yacht brokerage and import company headquartered in Dana Point, California back in 1974, today, the shipyard is a luxury yacht builder specialising in oceangoing passage-makers.

The original brokerage company, Pan Asian Enterprises (PAE), was founded by Jim Leishman, Dan Street and Joe Meglen and embraced the importation of CT boats from Taiwan. In 1976, PAE began importing another line of boats from Taiwan called the Transpac 49. Over an eight-year period, the company imported, sold and delivered 35 Transpacs.

When the time was right to develop their own models, PAE began with sailing yachts in the late 1970s, forming a relationship with new Taiwanese shipyard Ta Shing Yacht Building.

In 1988, as the sailing yacht market was declining, PAE embarked on a 46-foot (14m) motor yacht project designed by Jeff Leishman, Jim’s brother. Because its style and look was reminiscent of North Sea fishing trawlers, the name Nordhavn (Norwegian for North Harbor) was chosen for this new design. Nordhavn is the ongoing trading name of Pacific Asian Enterprises, Inc.

The shipyard overall has a global team of around 90 employees and currently offers 17 designs from 39 to 120 foot (12 to 36.5m). Nordhavn is also known for its loyal customers and regular rendezvous for owners.

History of Nordhavn Yachts

The origins of Nordhavn date back to 1974, and a small yacht brokerage and import company headquartered in Dana Point, California. The shipyard grew out of a brokerage company founded by Jim Leishman, Dan Street and Joe Meglen. The business originally comprised of a general yacht brokerage and the importation of CT boats from Taiwan. The brokerage and import company was known as Pan Asian Enterprises (PAE) and, in 1976, PAE added another line of boats called the Transpac 49. These were also imported from Taiwan and, between 1976 and 1984, the company imported, sold and delivered 35 of these.

In 2018, Nordhavn announced it would be collaborating with the renowned Dutch design firm Vripack on the creation of fresh, modern interiors for its Nordhavn 80 model to serve the diverse styles and tastes of contemporary buyers.

In 2020 the shipyard announced it is building their largest yacht yet, this being a new 148-foot (45m) project. The Nordhavn 148 expedition superyacht, known as N148 will be able to take on the most extreme cruising itinerary, and is the latest collaboration between Nordhavn and Vripack.

Today, Nordhavn’s specialism is in oceangoing passage-makers that can cross any ocean in safety, luxury and comfort.

The Nordhavn Collection

The expedition yacht builder has delivered more than 850 yachts to over 500 owners, most of whom are owner/operators of their vessels. These full displacement, trawler-style motor yachts are built of fiberglass composite to the shipyard’s highest standards.

In 1988, PAE embarked on a 46-foot (14m) motor yacht project designed by Jeff Leishman, Jim’s brother. Hull Number 1 of the Nordhavn 46 was completed and shipped in early 1989. In terms of other notable builds, Nordhavn’s production series includes many innovative models, such as a 56-foot Motorsailer and the 75 Exploration Yacht Fisher, as well as the European-styled Nordhavn 78.

On the superyacht side, Nordhavn’s flagship is a Nordhavn 120. The 120-foot AURORA (36.75m), was launched in 2014 and was the recipient of several awards recognizing her comfort, stability and range. The Nordhavn 120 AURORA was designed by Jeff Leishman with naval architecture by Nordhavn, and the interior design was created by Destry Darr Designs. AURORA can accommodate up to 10 people with a complement of seven crew.

Whilst the smallest model in the collection is N41 (12.6m), the newest project, the N148 (45m) will be groundbreaking for the shipyard. The first metal yacht in the history of the Nordhavn product line, this new design pushes the brand to go beyond prior engineering feats. Key to the design are Vripack’s reinterpretation of particular features, including a flared, rounded bow, the yard’s interesting combination of square and round windows, and an industrial chic aesthetic. The interior volume of the N148 will be approximately 25% larger than the fleet’s current queenship, the Nordhavn 120. This model has been hailed as the ultimate crossover yacht: a mix of commercial ship and elegant superyacht.
