The Royal Malta Yacht Club (RMYC) is pleased to confirm that the Notice of Race for 43rd Rolex Middle Sea Race is available online and yachts may already register their participation.

Last year’s race attracted 114 yachts, a remarkable achievement given the ongoing backdrop of a global pandemic. This year looks no less difficult with the situation in the Ukraine creating further uncertainty, but the RMYC is hopeful another impressive fleet will gather. The 2022 race is scheduled to start on Saturday, 22 October 2022.

Registration open for the 2022 Rolex Middle Sea Race

In issuing this release, the RMYC acknowledges the unfortunate controversy surrounding the implementation of the alternative finish line for safety reasons, and the impact on the overall results of the 42nd Rolex Middle Sea Race. Following an internal review, the RMYC has taken and continues to take steps to ensure the rules and regulations surrounding the 43rd race are fit for purpose. In parallel with the internal review, the club has sought feedback from competitors and guidance from the RMYC’s longstanding race partners, including the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC). As a result of these actions, the Race Organisation has been strengthened, with the most significant change comprising the appointment of Chris Stone, the RORC’s Racing Manager, as Race Director. A proven professional sailing administrator, he has 20 years’ experience managing events such as the Rolex Fastnet Race, RORC Caribbean 600, the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, and Volvo Ocean Race and Clipper Round the World stopovers. “The Rolex Middle Sea Race is a major event in the international sailing calendar. It attracts a diverse fleet from around the world which expects and deserves the very best in race management,” said Stone. “The primary objective is supporting the RMYC and its people in making race management robust and keeping the reputation and standing of this great race in good stead.” A second appointment of note is Mufti Kling’s promotion to Chairman of the International Jury. Kling’s offshore jury experience is considerable and notably includes the Rolex Fastnet Race. Along with Stone, Kling has been party to a rigorous review and re-drafting of all race documentation to make sure issues are identified and corrected. The overall approach has been progressive and modern. For example, the alternative finish line provision will remain in the Sailing Instructions for safety reasons, but close attention will also be paid to the course length and potential impact on results. David Cremona, Commodore of the RMYC, is confident that the way the club has faced up to circumstances of 2021 will lead to an improved experience for all competitors: “The 42nd edition should have gone down in history as one of the most spectacular races ever. We had an incredible weather system matched with an incredible fleet. The last thing it should be remembered for is the frustration provoked. We have learnt from it and have redoubled our efforts to ensure all competing crews finish the 2022 race wanting to come back.”

Yachting Malta is a public private partnership between the Government of Malta and the Royal Malta Yacht Club.

Launched in April 2015, the organisation’s primary role is to identify and attract high profile yachting events to the Maltese Islands, including sailing regattas, power racing, boat shows, yachting awards & conferences.  Yachting Malta also aims to enhance the quality and growth of already established events.

Another role is to foster and promote yachting and associated international activities with an emphasis on the young.  This includes education and training in the fundamentals of sailing, powerboat racing and water safety.

The organisation also serves as a consultative voice to the relevant authorities vis a vis infrastructural yachting projects such as new breakwaters, yacht services & marinas. One of Yachting Malta’s goals is to support the increase the range and volume of berthing facilities and yacht services in Malta and Gozo.

Another crucial focus for Yachting Malta is the promotion of Malta as a yachting destination for super yachts. The aim is to make Malta a better cruising ground and wintering base for this 24m+ luxury and niche industry.

During the first year of operation Yachting Malta has consulted and listened carefully to the key players of the industry and the sports sector. As a result of this consultation Yachting Malta has developed a clear strategy with 120 identified initiatives related to the sports sector, leisure yachting and super yachts.  The initiatives include proposals related to industry planning, policy, tax incentives, legislative updates and enforcement matters. Once put into practice these initiatives will place Malta in a prominent position on the international yachting map.

Yachting Malta’s overall aim is to promote Malta’s leading name and tradition as a yachting destination in the Mediterranean. Whilst maximising Malta’s yachting potential, the organisation will aim to achieve a mark-up in overall quality of the Maltese yachting product. Ensuring excellence and competitiveness throughout the sector is Yachting Malta’s consistent target.

"Yachting Malta (YM) has been created to promote Malta as a yacht racing, leisure cruising & super yacht destination. YM’s role is also to identify & attract high profile yachting events to the Maltese Islands including regattas, boat shows, awards, conferences and other activities related to yachting."

Royal Malta Yacht Club Restaurant

September 16, 2021 by Ramona Depares Leave a Comment

RMYC Porto 21

Dinner at the Yacht Club is one of those iconic things that are a must-do for anyone who enjoys chill restaurants with a view.

Let’s start with the obvious – *that* view. Sweeping vistas of Valletta and Manoel Island as I sit sipping on a glass of chilled Chablis? Why, yes thank you. Even if the Royal Malta Yacht Club simply decided to throw out a couple of cushions on the floor and call it the deal of the day, I suspect we’d still all be into it, such is the natural beauty of the location.

But they don’t, of course. The Royal Malta Yacht Club restaurant, which is called Port 21 incidentally, seriously pulls out all the stops in terms of service and food. No matter where you are seated, the view is guaranteed and it comes with service that is seriously charming and on point. This is a team that knows a thing or three about hospitality, and it’s all reflected in the lovely service.

Menus arrive right on time soon after we are seated; we are offered a fresh basket of bread just as my greedy ass finishes the last bite of fragrant loaf; the specials are explained well and graciously… it is impossible not to relax and enjoy the experience.

But on to the food – the menu offers a good mix of Mediterranean dishes, with a strong focus on fresh fish. On the evening we are there, they have Oysters Provencal on the list of specials, so of course there’s no way I’m missing out on that. This was definitely the right decision, as the dish was presented exactly as it should be – on ice, with tabasco and a small side concoction that had a definite zing, and fat, juicy, fragrant oysters. It was pure perfection.

Port 21 RMYC

My guest opted for the Risotto al Limone, Basilico e Zafferano, and couldn’t stop singing the praises of the delicate flavours – which meant that I had to steal a forkful too, of course. Anyone opting for this vegetarian dish will certainly not be missing out on any flavours.

A glass of wine later we were ready for the main event – my guest’s fillet of beef, which looked and smelled delicious, and my rather impressive seabass, prepared al sale . Shoutout to the head waiter Marco Vucovic for breaking the salt covering and filleting the dish oh-so-expertly, so that I could tuck in without worrying about details like bones. And tuck in I did, Chef having done superb justice to this beautiful fish. Accompanied by crispy roast potatoes and veg, this one made my tastebuds sing.

Fast-forward 20 minutes, two empty plates and a vanished Chablis later, and I was ready to state that there was certainly no room for dessert. But I had reckoned without Marco’s gentle persuasive skills – not to mention the delectable descriptions he provided us with.

And thus we succumbed to a Pistacchio Cake (so light! so fluffy!) and a Tiramisu that I loved equally. I tested both and I genuinely was at a loss to find a favourite, the one thing I know for sure is that this was a perfect ending to a really lovely dinner.

A big well done to Port 21 at the Royal Malta Yacht Club – we will be back, for more of the gorgeous food and the equally gorgeous view.

The top 50 most exclusive yacht clubs in the world honored with platinum status.

Royal Yacht Squadron in England

The rich and famous are not merely looking for the best place to anchor their yachts; they are also seeking out exclusive memberships in stunning destinations, all offering luxury amenities and, of course, bragging rights. These exclusive yachting clubs with often outrageous initiation fees, provide luxurious clubhouses, and provide accommodations for yachties who want to get their land legs. Most of them provide high-end concierge service to its members as well as Michelin-star quality restaurants and more.

Yacht Clubs have been recognized in the Platinum Clubs of America elections for more than 20 years. According to the Platinum Club, “Recognition in the following categories is important in the selection of Platinum status; Tradition, history, and heritage, a respected membership, excellence in amenities, exceptional service, adapting to changing times, and overall experience.

I spoke with the President of Club Leaders Forum, David V. Smith, about the selection, and he says, “we created an alphabetical selection this time as opposed to by rank because we felt that it was challenging to compare a yacht club in Ireland with a yacht club in Singapore, as amenities, location and facilities do vary quite a lot. The yachting and boating world is a different and unique culture, typically a little more relaxed and not as formal as country clubs and golf clubs. However, many of the world’s finest yacht clubs have wonderful history and traditions, with a great sense of camaraderie among their members. Certain yacht clubs were selected by the Panel not necessarily for their facilities and amenities but in their recognition of hosting world class sailing regattas and events.”

Here are the top 50 most exclusive yacht clubs worldwide being awarded the ultimate Platinum Status for 2021.

Registration Open for the 2023 Rolex Middle Sea Race

Press Release

2 June, 2023

the royal malta yacht club

The Royal Malta Yacht Club (RMYC) is pleased to confirm that the Notice of Race for 44th Rolex Middle Sea Race is available online and yachts may already register their participation. Last year’s race attracted 118 yachts, another exceptional achievement for a race that always draws an impressively international fleet. The RMYC is looking to attract another varied participation and to challenge the record number of entries, 130, set in 2018. The 2023 race is scheduled to start on Saturday, 21 October from Grand Harbour, Malta.

Always seeking to build on the previous year, the RMYC is excited to announce it is employing a new registration system, which forms part of an updated race management backend suite geared to improving the experience of owners, crew, fans, media and the race team itself.

The system is based on the Nautical Cloud solution, developed by a group of passionate sailors intent on modernising the entire race office and competitor journey. The system enables sailors to enter races, manage crew and even find them, process payments and administer certification checklists with a seamless user experience. Nautical Cloud has been proven to transform the race experience and administration of several reputable clubs and events including the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) and the Junior offshore Group (JOG). Crews entering this year’s Rolex Fastnet Race will already be familiar with the process.

Commodore David Cremona expressed the RMYC’s satisfaction with the development:

“ We are always looking to put the competitors’ interests first. We firmly believe this new race management system will improve their experience and help us to become more efficient in our handling of entries. Despite this development, I am happy to reassure competitors that the race office remains staffed by the usual friendly faces. The Maltese welcome will be as personal and responsive as ever. ”

Several crews have already indicated their intention to compete, including both familiar names and some less well-known, in the context of the 606nm Rolex Middle Sea Race. One of two headline boats is the Stephane Névé skippered Wally 107, Spirit of Malouen, racing as Paprec Sailing Team and representing France. The Judel/Vrolijk designed yacht (ex. Open Season, ex.Hamilton), built by Green Marine and will be the second Wally yacht to take on the Mediterranean’s most challenging offshore race following the successful participation of Bullitt last year. Despite her formidable 32.55 metre / 107 foot length, the record for the largest yacht remains with the 43m / 140ft Skorpios. Névé previously took part in the race in 2021 with a TP52 finishing a day behind the first monohull home, Comanche, which set a new course record.

Another newcomer is Pyewacket 70 from the United States. The Pyewacket name was first made famous in the yachting world through the series of boats owned by the avid ocean racer Roy E. Disney, a nephew of Walt Disney and who passed away in 2009. His son, Roy P. Disney, is a hugely experienced offshore racer in his own right and continues the Pyewacket legacy with this latest iteration. Originally designed by Juan K and launched in 2011, Pyewacket 70 (ex. Black Jack, ex. Telefonica), is a modified Volvo 70, sporting a taller rig and deeper, lighter keel. Overall and Line Honours winner at the 2023 RORC Caribbean 600, the Pyewacket team's next challenge begins on 1 July at the 2023 Transpac. Despite some well-founded attempts, no Volvo 70 (modified or not) has won the Rolex Middle Sea Race on handicap. I Love Poland did, of course, take line honours in 2020.

According to David Cremona, the maxis are great for generating excitement, spectacle and publicity, especially around the start, but it is yachts smaller than 15 metres (50 feet) that make up the bulk of entries:

“ We all love the big fast maxi yachts whether monohull or multihull. They add real spice to the start and offer the prospect of record breaking passages. While they are an important part of the fleet mix, we know that our core competitors take part on smaller, slower yachts. Rightly so, the most important trophy is for the overall win on handicap under IRC and, over the years, winners have been drawn from all parts of the entry list. ”

Looking further down the size rankings, Julien Boucard form France has entered the Elan 37 Godzilla 2, the SunFast 3300 Red Ruby from the United States is returning this time with Christina Wolfe as skipper,  Per Roman from Sweden has registered the JPK1180 GP Bullhound, Katrina Westphal of Germany is entering the Carkeek 47 Störtebeker and Simon Toms from the UK is competing with the SunFast 3300 Zephyr.

Last year’s fleet ranged in size from 30 feet (9 plus metres) to 100 ft (30.5m) and included some of most powerful monohulls and multihulls competing on the international racing circuit. Riccardo Pavoncelli’s Italian MOD70 Mana was first to finish less than a minute ahead of French sistership Zoulou and ten minutes before the Italian Multi70 Maserati. Joost Schultz’s Dutch entry, the 30.48m / 100ft maxi Leopard 3 secured monohull line honours, while Eric de Turckheim was a very popular overall winner under IRC with Teasing Machine, the French NMYD 54.

The 44th edition of the Rolex Middle Sea Race will start on Saturday, 21 October 2023.

Royal Malta Yacht Club unveils its 2024 Calendar of Events

  • December 18, 2023
  • Maria Vella-Galea

The highly anticipated calendar of events for 2024 was launched by the Royal Malta Yacht Club this evening to its members.

The calendar was designed to keep in mind the various interests that the Club’s members have – whether seasoned racers. seeking the thrill of competition, an adventurous cruiser yearning to explore the open waters, or a dinghy or keelboat enthusiast embracing the joy of smaller vessels, the Club’s sailing calendar was meticulously designed to meet as many interests as possible.

“A lot of thought has been put into the the design of the 2024 calendar, stemming from our belief that the sea is meant to be explored in various ways, and our calendar reflects this commitment to inclusivity” commented Adrian Gauci Borda, Rear Commodore (Sailing).

For the thrill seekers, the Club has prepared a host of racing events which test the skills of all those navigating the waves with precision and determination. For those who prefer a more leisurely pace, the Club has ensured that cruising classes and events are on the calendar aiming to build a stronger cruising fleet, taking it further afar from our shores. Dinghy and One Design Class racing enthusiasts are in for a special treat this year with two international events taking place in Malta.
