How to take a 3 point fix when sailing?

14 January 2020

A three point fix is a method of fixing your position on a chart within sight of land. Three bearings are taken from landmarks on shore.  You will need a chart, a handheld bearing compass and a pencil.

To take a three point fix when you are stationary is relatively easy, because the bearings will not change in the time it takes you to take all three bearings.  When you are sailing it becomes a little tricky. The perfect three point fix, would involve the three landmarks being 120 degrees apart, thus splitting a circle equally but this is rare. Great care must be taken when selecting your land bearings.

Before you take the bearings, have a look around to see which landmarks are clearly visible and also appear on the chart. Next, make sure your bearings are as wide apart as possible, if they are too close together your fix may be less accurate.  When taking your bearings, take the bearing where the angle changes least first, i.e. bearing on the bow or stern. Your second bearing should be the second slowest to change, i.e. on the quarter.  The third bearing is the bearing that changes the fastest i.e. on the beam.

These bearings should be taken as quickly and accurately as possible, then plotted on the chart.  Remember to convert these bearings from Compass (C) to True (T). Rarely will you be fortunate enough to have all three bearing lines on the chart intersect at a single position. Typically you will end up with a triangle which we call a cocked hat. It is safest to assume your position is within this cocked hat at the closest position to any navigational danger.

This is a great skill to teach any member of crew when on a coastal passage, not only does it keep them busy but also involved in the navigation.

The largest yachts owned by tech billionaires, from Mark Zuckerberg to Jeff Bezos

  • Megayachts have become a status symbol for the richest of the rich.
  • In recent years, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg have splurged on enormous boats.
  • These are the biggest yachts owned by tech billionaires.

Insider Today

The average Joe celebrating a personal renaissance after, say, the end of a long-term relationship or when approaching a fresh decade might commemorate it with an ankle tattoo or a sports car. But if you're a billionaire, you may instead spend hundreds of millions on a yacht .

A few years after he and his wife divorced, Jeff Bezos shelled out on a megayacht. Last year, Bezos debuted the 127-meter vessel "Koru," a Māori symbol that signifies a fresh start — perhaps referring to that with his fiancée Lauren Sanchez.

Earlier this year, just before his 40th birthday, Mark Zuckerberg became the rumored owner of a yacht originally built for a Russian oligarch.

Superyachts have increasingly become ultrawealthy status symbols , providing highly secluded leisure and networking sites. They are — even more so than real estate — the single most expensive asset you can own.

"It's a bit of a celebration of your success in life, of wealth," Giovanna Vitelli, the vice president of the Azimut Benetti Group, the world's biggest producer of superyachts, told Business Insider.

While many tech billionaires have bought yachts, the richest of the rich, like Bezos, Zuckerberg, and Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison, have gone bigger. Their boats are virtual palaces at sea, decked with amenities like gyms, spas, pools, nightclubs, and movie theaters.

A look at these megayachts — broadly defined as over 70 meters long, mostly custom-built, and often costing nine figures — offers a glimpse into how the .00001% lives. It's something few others will ever get to experience. Even chartering a yacht of this size for a week typically costs upwards of $1 million.

One major thing that hundreds of millions of dollars can buy is privacy. There are likely yachts that have not been publicly recorded or registered — for example, Evan Spiegel is rumored to own the 94-meter megayacht Bliss. In an industry ruled by discretion , deciphering who owns what is typically an exercise in stringing together many clues.

Here are the largest yachts owned by tech billionaires, listed in order of length.

Jeff Bezos: Koru and Abeona

yacht 3 points

Amazon founder Bezos' $500 million megayacht, the 127-meter Koru, made a splash last year as it crisscrossed the Mediterranean in its first summer at sea, with its 75-meter support vessel Abeona in tow.

The sailing yacht, which is hard to miss thanks to its massive size and unique design, was host to Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez's famous friends . The couple held an engagement party on board, which reportedly drew guests including Bill Gates, Ari Emanuel, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Just a week later, they were seen on the streets of Dubrovnik, Croatia, with Orlando Bloom, Katy Perry, and Usher.

Even before its completion, Koru made headlines. It drew the ire of some Dutch people, who vowed to hurl eggs after it was announced a historic bridge in Rotterdam might be taken apart to allow the Oceanco boat through. Luckily, the shipyard made alternative plans, and an egg crisis was averted.

Among yacht world insiders , Koru is widely praised for its craftsmanship.

"I heard back in 2018 or something that somebody had ordered a classic sailing yacht," one superyacht expert told BI. "You order 125 meters, that's not really going to be classic. But it is. I think it's pretty cool."

Mark Zuckerberg: Launchpad

yacht 3 points

Earlier this year, the yacht world was rife with rumors that Zuckerberg purchased Launchpad, a 118-meter superyacht originally designed for a sanctioned Russian businessman.

The ship made her maiden voyage in March, going from Gibraltar to St. Maarten and mooring in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Little is known about her interior, but photos show a large swimming pool and helipad. Her price, too, has been kept under wraps but is said to be nine figures.

Eric Schmidt: Whisper

yacht 3 points

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt made waves last year when he agreed to buy the Alfa Nero , the yacht of a sanctioned Russian oligarch, for $67 million in an auction conducted by Antigua and Barbuda. But he backed out of the deal following legal issues over its true owner. He quietly purchased Kismet instead. The 95-meter-long Lürssen-built boat was formerly owned by the Jacksonville Jaguar's billionaire owner Shahid Khan . Schmidt renamed her Whisper.

The ship, which can fit 12 guests and a crew of 28, features a master deck with a private jacuzzi, full-service spa, lap pool, movie theater, and outdoor fireplace.

While her final sale price was not public, she was listed for 149 million euros (about $161 million at current exchange rates), and at a charity auction in January, one week aboard the ship went for $2.4 million, according to industry outlet Yacht Charter Fleet.

Barry Diller: Eos

yacht 3 points

Barry Diller , the chairman of digital media company IAC, co-owns the megayacht Eos with his wife, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg , who is immortalized by a figurehead sculpture by Anh Duong.

One of the largest private sailing yachts in the world, the three-masted Lürssen schooner measures 93 meters long. She took three years to be built before being delivered to Diller in 2009, and since then, little has come to light about her interior and features.

The power couple has hosted many celebrities on the Eos, which spends its summers crisscrossing the Mediterranean and New Year ' s Eve in St. Barts . Over the years, guests have included Oprah Winfrey, Emma Thompson, Anderson Cooper, and Bezos, leading some to believe she provided inspiration for his Koru.

Jim Clark: Athena

yacht 3 points

Netscape founder Jim Clark purchased the 90-meter sailing yacht Athena in 2004.

"I could easily have built a 50- or 60-meter motor yacht that would have had the same space as Athena, but I was never really interested in building a motor yacht," he told Boat International in 2016. "To my eye, she's one of the most gorgeous large sailing yachts, maybe the most gorgeous large sailing yacht in the world."

Athena has room for 10 guests and 21 crewmembers, and the only change Clark says he'd make in her design is adding more space for his kids.

"If I was forced to change something, I would convert the office on the lower deck into a children's room," he said.

The former Stanford professor tried to sell it at various points — listing it for $95 million in 2012 , $69 million in 2016, and $59 million in 2017 — but it has yet to change hands.

Larry Ellison: Musashi

yacht 3 points

Oracle founder Larry Ellison has owned several superyachts over the years, including the Katana, the Ronin, and the Rising Sun — which he sold to fellow billionaire David Geffen .

He purchased his current boat, Musashi, in 2011 for a reported $160 million from custom-yacht giant Feadship.

Named after a famous samurai warrior, the 88-meter-long yacht has both Japanese and Art Deco-inspired design elements. She also boasts amenities including an elevator, swimming pool, beauty salon, gym, and basketball court.

Ellison is known for his extravagant spending — private islands, jets, a tennis tournament — and yachting is among his favorite and most expensive hobbies. He took up racing them in the 1990s and financed the America's Cup-winning BMW Oracle Racing team .

Laurene Powell Jobs: Venus

yacht 3 points

Steve Jobs' wife, investor Laurene Powell Jobs, inherited a nearly finished 78-meter yacht named Venus when the Apple cofounder died in 2011.

After spending years vacationing on Ellison's yachts, Jobs wanted one for himself. He designed Venus with French starchitect and decorator Philippe Starck , and she was worth $130 million at completion.

"Venus comes from the philosophy of minimum," Starck said of her design. "The elegance of the minimum, approaching dematerialization."

Jobs and Starck began working together in 2007, the designer told Vanity Fair , and held monthly meetings over four years. Venus was delivered in 2012 to Jobs' specification: six identical cabins, a design to ensure spaces of absolute silence, and the most up-to-date technology.

"There will never again be a boat of that quality again. Because never again will two madmen come together to accomplish such a task," Starck told the magazine. "It was not a yacht that Steve and I were constructing, we were embarked on a philosophical action, implemented according to a quasi-religious process. We formed a single brain with four lobes."

Charles Simonyi: Norn

yacht 3 points

Early Microsoft employee Charles Simonyi has purchased two megayachts from the German shipyard Lürssen: the 90-meter Norn and 71-meter Skat.

Delivered in 2023, Norn is full of luxe features, including an outdoor cinema and a pool floor that lifts to become a light-up dancefloor. It shares a militaristic style with Skat , which Simonyi sold in 2021.

Skats's name is derived from the Danish word for treasure, and it had a listing price of 56.5 million euros and was launched in 2002.

"The yacht is to be home away from my home in Seattle, and its style should match the style of the house, adapted for the practicalities of the sea," Simonyi once said .

Sergey Brin: Dragonfly

yacht 3 points

Google cofounder Sergey Brin has built a flotilla of yachts, boats, and toys known as the "Fly Fleet."

Named after a once-secret Google product , the largest of Brin's armada is the sleek Dragonfly , which boasts a movie theater and a helipad. The 73-meter-long vessel was built by the Australian shipyard Silver Yachts and can fit up to 18 guests and 16 crew members, according to SuperYacht Times.

Also in his fleet is the superyacht Butterfly, a mere 38 meters long. Often moored in the Bay Area, her crewmembers spend their downtime kitesurfing and giving swimming lessons to local kids.

The rest of his marine lineup includes a smaller boat called Firefly, as well as Jet Skis, foilboards, dinghies, and kiteboards. It takes a team of 50 full-time employees to manage, steer, and maintain the entire operation.

Sindhu Sundar contributed to an earlier version of this story.

3 biggest Raiders 2024 NFL Draft mistakes

The Raiders added some talented players in the 2024 NFL Draft, but they missed out on a quarterback. Who will be their signal caller of the future?

Ben Strauss

Las Vegas Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce next to tight end Brock Bowers and a silhouette of an American Football player with a big question mark in the middle of it. They are all next to a logo for the Las Vegas Raiders.

The Las Vegas Raiders have begun a new era under head coach Antonio Pierce. He was the team's interim head coach for part of the 2023 season before signing a contract this offseason that cements Vegas' commitment to the Pierce way. Pierce has a similar appeal to Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell. For one, both are former players who seem to relate well to their players and earn their respect. However, Pierce and the Raiders have a long way to go before they're talked about like the Lions.

One major roadblock is at quarterback . The Raiders have a handful of options at the position, but no definitive franchise guy. Aidan O'Connell grabbed the heart of fans after gutsy performances in 2023 in relief of Jimmy Garoppolo. Gardner Minshew signed a surprisingly lucrative two-year $25 million contract during free agency which includes $15 million guaranteed. The 2024 NFL Draft did not fall the way the Raiders wanted and they were left without a first-round rookie QB.

Make no mistake, the future is bright for the Raiders . But fans will have to be patient with this team as they find an identity.

Raiders don't make an aggressive move for a QB

It's hard not to criticize how the Raiders handled their QB situation this offseason.

Part of this critique hinges on how many QBs the Raiders passed on this offseason and how there isn't a clear plan on how they might upgrade the position in the future. Ignoring the draft for a moment, the Raiders missed out on both Justin Fields and Russell Wilson during the free agency period. Both were very easy to acquire and didn't require a big investment. Either QB would have come cheaper than Minshew and with more contractual flexibility as well.

It would have also been nice to see the Raiders feverishly trying to move up the board after they saw the run on QBs start. That said, Michael Penix Jr. may have been their guy and his surprise pick at eighth overall may have shocked the Raiders as much as it did the rest of us.

You never want to put too much stock into what people are saying about the next year's draft class in May, but the 2025 class doesn't look good right now. Do the Raiders suffer from scarcity at the position in the next year's draft? Or will they be just successful enough to lose the draft position they would need to pick a QB next year? Perhaps they could trade for a QB, but who? And how expensive would it be?

Regardless, it's hard to feel optimistic about the 2024 season for the Raiders with quarterback still a question mark.

Passing on an elite tackle prospect in the first round

The Raiders picked Brock Bowers at 13th overall. Pairing him with Michael Mayer gives Vegas an elite pair of tight ends who have complementary skill sets. The pick is very easy to defend.

That said, the Raiders may have been better served picking an offensive lineman instead. Las Vegas had their pick of the following top offensive linemen who were still on the board at 13: Taliese Fuaga, Amarius Mims, Troy Fautanu, and Graham Barton.

Some of these players even boast position versatility, allowing them to plug in wherever they're needed on the offensive line. If the Raiders were worried about reaching on one of these players, a potential trade down could have netted additional resources and still saw the Raiders land an exciting player.

Credit where it's due — the Raiders selected G/C Jackson Powers-Johnson in the second round of the draft. Not only is he an incredible prospect but the Raiders got him at a solid discount in round two.

The Raiders will enter the 2024 season with Kolton Miller and Thayer Munford Jr. as their starting tackles.

Raiders don't land a wide receiver in incredibly deep draft class

Yes, the Raiders drafted Brock Bowers who is basically a wide receiver.

However, it is surprising that Vegas didn't spend any mid- or late-round picks on a wide receiver. This year's draft class was incredibly deep and talented and several players lasted until the very last round of the draft.

It may have been smart to invest in the future at wide receiver and stash someone who could learn behind Davante Adams and Jakobi Meyers for a year or two.

The Raiders did sign Michael Gallup following the draft, but he provides veteran depth and not long-term upside.

How Much is a Yacht Charter? 3 Main Costs Explained

Updated: Jul 14, 2022

Find out the real costs of a yacht charter and potential hidden fees.

Chartering a yacht can bring a lot of enjoyment and is one of the best ways to enjoy being out on the water for a variety of events and celebrating special occasions . Coordinating your charter and estimating the true cost of your excursion can be a challenging exercise. There are a variety of ways brokers and charters structure their fees and additional costs that we will break down while noting things that you should consider. We will also describe how rates can vary if you are looking to charter a yacht for a few hours, on a per-day basis, a long weekend, or more than a week.

As a general rule, the longer you commit to being on the yacht, think a week or more, then the more your rate for the yacht will decrease, but note that this is just for the boat . The primary factor driving the discounts is that the owner is securing more usage of the vessel and will happily discount the rate, but other costs will still increase for you. This brings us to the first major additional fee impacting the final cost of a yacht charter; the cost of operating.

What is a yacht charter APA?

1. Advanced Provisioning Allowance (APA)

Get ready to put down your credit card because selecting a yacht for your needs is just half of the journey and cost as you see in the below breakdown. Charters often change you all or a portion of the costs they intend to incur for operating the yacht. Not only are you charged for each item, but you pay upfront in the form of APA. This payment advancement is established to hold funds that will cover operating costs and the APA typically starts at around 30% to 40% of the cost to reserve the boat. The APA covers just about anything that goes into operating the yacht during your charter. It's important to note that the 30%-40% hold may cover all costs, but if you go over expect additional charges or if under the APA hold, a return of unused funds.

Below are the main items that typically fall under APA and an estimated cost per day for a 70-foot yacht accompanying 12 guests.

Fuel - $150 to $400 per day

This will vary depending on your itinerary, engines and fuel type, running efficiency, as well as the actual cost of fuel. Expect fuel prices at the dock to be 10% to 35% higher than at a traditional gas station. Diesel fuel, most common on larger boats, tends to be marked up less than gasoline. For a standard day charter, the boat typically will be out cruising for around two to three hours each day if staying local.

Food and Drinks - $50 to $150 per day per guest

Your food and drink budget can add up quickly depending on your tastes, how many meals you are eating on board, and of course the number of guests. If you are eating three meals plus snacks on board then the cost will increase vs two meals and snacks. Prefer steak, lobster, and fine wine to sandwiches, pizza, and beer, then expect the price to increase even more. One other thing to note is that if your requests require specialty shopping then there may be a fee added to the total food and beverage costs.

Chef - $250 to $750 per day

Some chefs will include their fee into a cost per person, which also includes the cost of the food. However, there are some chefs who will come on board to prepare the meals you've chosen and then charge a flat fee per day or meal for their time. Some celebrity chefs, think Top Chef contestants, will demand a higher fee, but we've estimated this cost without the celebrity factor.

Entertainment and Amenities - $200+ per day

Depending on the size of the yacht, it may include a tender, jet ski, water pads, slide, stand-up paddle boards, SEABOBS, flyboards, snorkel gear, kayaks, and inflatable islands, or more with their standard boat fee. With all of the options available, it's unlikely that most yachts will be able to have all of these items available for your charter. This is why most charters offer add-on options which are then charged as an additional cost and deducted from the APA. Entertainment such as live music, DJs, wine tastings, seaplane tour, photographers/videographers, and more is most likely another add-on, and the cost is a pass-through deducted from the APA. Internet and other utilities may be charged back to you as well.

Harbor and Docking Fees - $100 to $225 per day

Planning on visiting a different marina or making a few stops throughout your charter? Prepare to pay any harbor fees and/or docking fees. Some harbors, not as common in the U.S. for recreational charters, charge visiting vessels a harbor fee which is used to maintain the harbor. If the yacht you are on spends any time at the dock of a marina there is oftentimes a fee based on the yacht length and time spent at the dock. Reservations may be required but some marinas are making it easier to book and manage through services like Snag-A-Slip . Note that this should only apply if you are booking multi-day charters.

Delivery and Pickup Fees

If you want to be picked up or dropped off at a location outside of your charter's marina, there oftentimes is a cost associated that covers the yacht's time, crew, and fuel. This can vary based on a variety of factors, but if you want to be dropped off at a different location to end your charter and the return trip back is two hours, expect to pay $1,000 to $2,000 for the empty leg trip the charter makes back to its homeport.

Tip - $1,000 to $1,750 per day

Most charters strongly encourage tips for the captain and crew who are taking care of things before, during, and after your charter. How much you tip the crew of a yacht is dependent on the level of service and your satisfaction. It's completely discretionary, but usually expected and ends up being 15% to 20% of the charter cost. This can be deducted from your APA if there are funds remaining or added on at the end of your trip.

The asterisk* is here because most characters include the basic crew required to operate the yacht in their base boat charge, typically a captain and one deckhand. See point number three below for potential additional costs .

Plan your yacht charter and understand costs

2. Charter Duration

There are many charter operations that only offer half-day or full-day charters. This is due to some complexities that arise once you mix in overnight charters. Overnights require a 24-hour crew, hotel-like amenities, and a few other logistical items. As a general rule, if you book a longer charter, then the less expensive it is on a daily basis. Charters may offer multi-day discounts because of the reduced prep work, cleaning, onboarding, offboarding, and the most important factor is that the yacht is actually working and making money compared to sitting empty at the dock. Some charters will offer between a 15% and 40% discount on the yacht/boat fee for longer bookings. This is because, as mentioned above, most of the operational costs are still passed through to you in the APA, so adding days to a charter doesn't increase the operational costs because that cost is passed on to you!

How many crew members are needed for a yacht

3. Number of Guests - $200 to $400 per day per crew

Most charters have a cap of 12 guests due to various regulations of the charter business. When charters quote you the yacht/boat fee, it typically comes with a captain and one crew member. If you are hosting up to 12 guests, then it will indicate to the charter if additional crew members are needed. For instance, if you add on specific water activities, it may require a dedicated crew member just to manage the usage of those add-ons. If there is a high demand for food and beverage, that may also warrant another dedicated crew member for prep, serving, and cleanup. If there are a total of 12 guests, the odds are that the yacht charter may require a minimum of three total crew members, not including the captain. The additional two crew members are not free and their costs will be added to your bill. Yacht charter crews are paid anywhere from $200 to $400 per day plus tips at the conclusion of the charter.

As an example, let's say you are trying to figure out how much it costs to charter a yacht for three days on a 70-foot yacht for 12 people. There are some other factors to consider such as the specific type of yacht, age of the yacht, location, and time of year, so use this as a rough guideline.

The daily breakdown for traditional charters is approximately $10,700 per day. Artizia Yachts is a unique and exclusive membership program growing across the U.S. and eventually overseas. There are three different membership options that can cut the cost of charters in half while still providing a private and luxurious all-inclusive experience. Membership spots are limited for each yacht in order to allow easy booking and availability to members.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

It’s been a weird entry to professional media availability for Caitlin Clark.

The Indiana Fever star has already had her share of awkward exchanges in her WNBA media appearances.

Clark had another weird exchange with a reporter prior to her WNBA Debut on May 3, where she scored 21 points in a preseason game against the Dallas Wings.

Caitlin Clark made her WNBA Debut on May 3.

Prior to game, she was asked by a reporter if “bae” will be in attendance, referring to her boyfriend — former Iowa basketball player Connor McCaffery.

“Huh, no. He’s working… I’m playing solo,” Clark said. “I better get used to him, man. I’m a pro.”

Weeks ago, Clark had the famous awkward exchange with Indianapolis Star columnist Gregg Doyel .

He began the interaction by flashing the heart symbol that Clark displays to her family after games, to which Clark replied: “You like that?”

It sparked a back-and-forth that ended with Doyel saying: “Start doing it to me and we’ll get along just fine.”

He later apologized for how awkward it all was.

Clark also blocked former NFL All-Pro wide receiver Antonio Brown for a crude remark.

Clark and the Fever are scheduled to host the Atlanta Dream on May 9 — previously moved from May 10 due to the Pacers hosting the Knicks in Game 3 of their NBA playoff series.

The game will be the Fever’s preseason home opener, and their last on the schedule before the regular season begins on May 14.

Stock market today: US stocks end the week higher after solid earnings and Goldilocks jobs report

  • US stocks soared on Friday, with the Nasdaq 100 closing higher by about 1% for the week.
  • Solid earnings results and a weaker-than-expected April jobs report helped push stock prices higher.
  • "The case for rate cuts got a little stronger today. Goldilocks could be making a comeback," TradeStation's David Russell said.

Insider Today

US stocks surged on Friday after a solid Apple earnings report and a weaker-than-expected April jobs report, which increased the chances of an interest rate cut from the Federal Reserve later this year.

The US economy added 175,000 jobs in April, well below economists' forecast of 238,000 jobs and far short of the 303,000 added in March. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate ticked higher, to 3.9% from 3.8%. The jobs report also showed the slowest year-over-year wage growth since June 2021.

"Worries about wage pressures have dragged on the market recently and today's number relieves some of those fears. The first quarter had several difficult numbers on the inflation front but the second quarter might be starting on a cooler footing. The case for rate cuts got a little stronger today. Goldilocks could be making a comeback," TradeStation market strategist David Russell said in comments to Business Insider.

The light jobs report should ultimately give the Fed more flexibility in speeding up the timing of rate cuts, and bond yields fell significantly with that sentiment in mind. The 10-year Treasury note dropped 8 basis points to 4.50%.

Also helping boost stocks Friday was Apple , which surged about 7% after it reported a better-than-feared second-quarter earnings report. The iPhone maker also launched a historic $110 billion stock-buyback program and increased its quarterly dividend by 4%, which was cheered by investors.

Here's where US indexes stood at the 4:00 p.m. closing bell on Friday:

  • S&P 500 : 5,127.79, up 1.26%
  • Dow Jones Industrial Average : 38,675.68, up 1.18% (+450.02 points)
  • Nasdaq composite : 16,156.33, up 1.99%

Here's what else happened today:

  • Here's a breakdown of Apple's second-quarter earnings report and comments from the company's earnings call.
  • The stock market's bull run will end in either a bubble or a recession , the Bank of America strategist Michael Hartnett said.
  • Apple's $110 billion stock-buyback program is worth more than the total value of companies including Boeing, Chipotle, and Airbnb.
  • Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen voiced concerns to Congress about the difficulty of buying a starter home in America .
  • Amgen soared 16% after it talked up its new weight-loss drug that could be administered monthly instead of weekly.
  • Trump Media stock dropped after the SEC charged its auditor with "massive fraud."

In commodities, bonds, and crypto:

  • West Texas Intermediate crude oil dropped 1.15% to $78.04 a barrel. Brent crude , the international benchmark, declined 0.98% to $82.85 a barrel.
  • Gold edged lower by 0.13% to $2,306.60 an ounce.
  • The 10-year Treasury yield fell 8 basis points to 4.50%.
  • Bitcoin jumped 4.51% to $61,748.

How MSC’s private island experience is different for cruisers in suites

Ashley Kosciolek

Do you enjoy large cruise ships but still want to feel like you're in the lap of luxury? Passengers booked in MSC Cruises' Yacht Club cabins and suites have access to high-end amenities – both on the ship and off.

Butlers, exclusive dining and a private pool delight guests on board, but perks also await on MSC 's private island, Ocean Cay Marine Reserve , in the Bahamas. You can expect dedicated trams, towel service and a chance to book the nicest cabanas on the island, among other extras.

yacht 3 points

Read on to find out how the MSC Yacht Club Ocean Cay experience differs from that of the average cruiser.

MSC Ocean Cay Yacht Club beaches vs. regular beaches

yacht 3 points

MSC's Ocean Cay Marine Reserve private island is home to seven (soon to be eight) beaches, and all are public, except one — Ocean House Beach, which is the Yacht Club's exclusive swath of sand. Beyond its exclusivity, the beach has a few other differences from the island's regular beaches.

There, use of lounge chairs and umbrellas is free. Chairs at the other beaches are also free and available on a first-come, first-served basis; however, umbrellas come with an extra cost.

Passengers must sign out towels on board the ship before heading ashore to Ocean Cay's main beaches. Yacht Club passengers can skip that hassle and ask for towels at the towel tent found on Ocean House Beach.

yacht 3 points

Interestingly, I found that several of the public beaches were less crowded than Ocean House Beach. At the latter, chairs were positioned much more closely to one another. If you're willing to walk or hitch a ride on one of the island's trams, you'll find fewer crowds on the farther beaches than if you stick close to the ship.

MSC Ocean Cay Yacht Club food vs. regular dining

yacht 3 points

Free lunch is included for all cruisers who visit Ocean Cay. For Yacht Club travelers, the Ocean House Restaurant — an exclusive waiter-served dining venue where passengers enjoy their meals on a shaded porch — exudes upscale beach vibes.

yacht 3 points

During my visit, the menu included starters like crab ceviche, charred octopus and a salad with romaine, tomatoes, jicama, a poached egg and candied bacon in a citrus dressing. Mains featured locally sourced blackened mahi-mahi, lobster roll, carne asada, a grilled portobello mushroom sandwich and one of the best burgers I've ever tasted during a cruise — a blend of Angus chuck, short ribs and grilled brisket with red onion jam and Monterey Jack cheese. Desserts consisted of creme caramel, mango cheesecake and chocolate cake with coffee sauce.

yacht 3 points

The meals at Ocean House are definitely superior to the fare found at the Seakers buffet, which is where cruisers not staying in the Yacht Club can go for a beach barbecue that serves hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken, macaroni and cheese, red beans, roasted potatoes and a slew of salads, drinks and desserts.

yacht 3 points

The food is tasty, but lines can be long. An alternative is to head to one of several food trucks throughout the island. Some are free and dole out the same items offered on the buffet but with shorter lines. Others sell entirely different menu items — lobster grilled cheese, fried calamari, shrimp with watermelon, Caribbean ceviche and octopus salad — with the cost charged to cruisers' onboard accounts.

yacht 3 points

Additionally — and also for an extra fee — a stand near the ship offers specialty coffee and ice cream. (If you're a coffee lover, trust me when I say you won't want to miss the Coco-Nilla Latte.)

MSC Ocean Cay Yacht Club cabanas vs. regular cabanas

yacht 3 points

There are three types of cabanas on Ocean Cay: Ocean Cay Beach Cabanas, Ocean View Yacht Club Cabanas and Beachfront Yacht Club Cabanas. All three types are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

They can hold up to six people each and include cold water, beach towels and chairs, as well as floating mats for use in the water. As the prices increase, so does the number of inclusions. The last two types are only available for booking by Yacht Club passengers.

Ocean Cay Beach Cabanas, found on South Beach, North Beach and Bimini Beach, are the most affordable on the island at $250 for the day. They've got walls on three sides, and they're outfitted with cushioned couches. They include the basic amenities mentioned above, and anyone can rent them.

Next up are the Ocean View Yacht Club Cabanas, which cost $400 for the day and also entitle you to free lunch and drinks, as well as fresh fruit skewers, four sets of snorkel gear and four floating mats. They're found on the Yacht Club's private Ocean House Beach, so they're off-limits to non-Yacht Club guests.

yacht 3 points

The most expensive, however, are the Beachfront Yacht Club Cabanas, located in a different section of the Ocean House area. They carry a $450 price tag but offer all the same extras as Ocean View Yacht Club Cabanas.

The draw? They're closer to the water and, therefore, have better views. Although they aren't on the main part of Ocean House Beach, they are still in the exclusive area, near the restaurant, so you don't have to go far to grab food.

Ultimately, the only thing being in the Yacht Club affords you in this case is the option to book more expensive cabanas.

MSC Ocean Cay Yacht Club trams vs. regular trams

yacht 3 points

At 95 acres, Ocean Cay is sizable. If you're fit, you can walk from one end to the other in about 15 minutes, but if you don't have great mobility or if you're easily overheated, reaching some of the island's more remote beaches can be difficult on foot. That's why MSC offers tram shuttles.

Passengers in standard cabins will find tram stops with shaded waiting areas throughout the island. However, waits can be long, especially if many other people are also in need of a lift.

Yacht Club cruisers can take advantage of trams exclusively for the Yacht Club. They run between a special tent (with free cold water to sip while you wait) set up just inside the entrance to Ocean Cay and the Ocean House beach and restaurant area.

You can make special requests for stops, which the regular trams usually won't accommodate. For example, you might ask to go straight from the tent to South Beach for a volleyball game without stopping anywhere else first.

MSC Ocean Cay Yacht Club activities vs. regular activities

yacht 3 points

This is the one category where the island's public spaces beat the Ocean House area by a mile. If you're looking for something to do other than eating, drinking or lazing by the beach, you'll have to head back toward the ship because there's not much going on in the exclusive areas.

Everything from massages, lighthouse tours and water sports equipment rentals to beach parties, volleyball games and shore excursions takes place elsewhere. However, perhaps that's by design. The Yacht Club is generally quiet, even on board, and the line likely prefers to keep the raucousness to other locations.

Bottom line

yacht 3 points

The MSC Yacht Club experience is more exclusive than the standard one at Ocean Cay, with extras like butler service, dedicated trams, towel service, access to pricier cabanas and a private beach and restaurant with better food and shorter waits.

However, all of the action — shore excursions, pickup volleyball games, beach parties, the lighthouse show — happens in the areas that are accessible to everyone, which significantly levels the playing field.

Additionally, items like specialty coffee, ice cream and for-fee food truck orders cost extra for everyone — even Yacht Club passengers.

Overall, Ocean Cay offers a great day for anyone who enjoys the beach, regardless of cabin type.

Kendrick Lamar Drops Second Drake Diss "6:16 In LA": 'Can’t Toosie Slide Up Outta This One'

"I don't see no fire," Kendrick croons in the first few seconds of his latest Drake diss.

While Drake hasn't issued a response to Kendrick Lamar 's " euphoria " just yet, Kendrick is already back with something new for OVO and company .

As fans will note, this marks the fulfillment of a tease Kendrick laid out on his previous Drake diss, which saw him rapping that he liked Drake's 2015 cut " Back to Back ," itself a back-to-back diss aimed at Meek Mill . In "euphoria," Kendrick vowed to "get back to that, for the record." And by Friday, mere three days removed from the surprise "euphoria" drop, Kendrick had done exactly that.

Below, hear the IG-unveiled "6:16 in LA," the title of which is clearly having more than a bit of fun with Drizzy's timestamp series .

View this photo on Instagram

At one point, Kendrick asks, "Have you ever thought that OVO was working for me?" before expressing hatred for "bullies" and asserting that Drake "must be a terrible person," like so:

Have you ever thought that OVO was working for me? Fake bully, I hate bullies, you must be a terrible person Everyone inside your team is whispering that you deserve it Can't Toosie Slide up outta this one, it's just gon' resurface

Kendrick circles back to Drake's inner circle later on, alleging that a fifth of the people on his payroll want Drake "as a casualty." Kendrick further alleges that "one of them is actually next to you," though it’s not immediately clear who, exactly, he’s referencing here.

If you were street smart, then you woulda caught that your entourage is only to hustle you A hundred n***as that you got on salary, and twenty of 'em want you as a casualty And one of them is actually next to you And two of them is practically tired of your lifestyle, just don't got the audacity to tell you But let me tell you some game, 'cause I can see you my lil' homie You playin' dirty with propaganda, it blow up on ya You're playin' nerdy with Zack Bia and Twitter bots But your reality can't hide behind Wi-Fi Your lil memes is losing steam, they figured you out The forced opinions is not convincin', y'all need a new route

Akademiks , a consistent presence in the great rap war of 2024 who recently argued that Drake had the upper hand post-"euphoria," catches a stray, with Kendrick positing that the streamer and recent Mar-a-Lago guest has been "looking compromised" as of late.

The 6 God’s For All the Dogs again gets a nod too ("Every dog gotta have his day, now live in your purpose"), as does Kendrick’s self-admitted "boring life" in pursuit of peace. That peace, however, can be put on pause "if the world is ready to see you bleed."

When wheeling "6:16 in LA" out to the public on Friday, Kendrick paired the track with an image of a glove, signaling, of course, that the gloves are off in his back-and-forth against Drake. But there’s more to this choice of image than just that, as the glove in question prominently features the Maybach logo, not to mention it could most certainly be another Michael Jackson reference. On " Like That ," Kendrick reminded Drake that "Prince outlived Mike Jack."

The late King of Pop also gets a mention in the closing line of Kendrick's latest:

Before you figure that you're not alone Ask what Mike would do

The title, in keeping with Drake’s timestamp series, pretty closely aligns with what time the song first hit IG on Friday. However, it’s potentially worth noting that 6/16—as in, June 16—is also Father’s Day , not to mention 2Pac's birthday . As for the sample, Kendrick appears to have sampled Al Green.

The Lake Charles Yacht club will host the Pirate’s Regatta

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - If you were driving over the I-10 bridge over the weekend you may have seen all the race boats out there.

Well, this weekend was the inaugural pirate’s regatta hosted by the Lake Charles yacht club.

Although the weather was not the best this weekend, racers from different parts of the southeast still came to race their sunfish boats.

Like Arthur Cayer, who has been racing sunfish boats for over 20 years and this is his first time racing at the lakefront.

“I’ve never been to the Lake Charles Yacht Club, and I thought I’d check it out and what I found out is number one the members are absolutely wonderful they’re great guys and gals. And the other thing the Lake Charles yacht club is an excellent venue to sail from, it very easy to get your boat into the water,” said Cayer.

Another racer is a Lake Charles local, David Sargent, he’s been racing different boats on the lake for 10 years, and he says his favorite part about boating is

“The relaxation, getting out on the water and just enjoying God’s creation,” said Sargent.

Race officer Ricky Richarson has also boated for many years and was excited that they were able to bring this style of race back.

“It’s the first one we’ve done in a long time so nobody’s familiar with it it’s a new event so just had low participation cause of that, but weather did play a part in it, but we were able to go through the rainstorms and be able to hold the event,” said Richarson.

Even though this race was smaller than expected they plan on continuing this race and hosting more in the years to come.

Boat Anchoring Techniques Explained (Illustrated Guide)

The basics of anchoring in calm conditions in an anchorage with good holding aren't difficult to master, and you should start with basic anchoring techniques if you haven't read it already and practiced setting your hook.

This article is for when anchoring isn't so easy, but you still have to stop your boat and stay secure. There are several approaches you can take for anchoring in tricky bottoms, bad weather, or in other special situations where conditions are less than ideal.

Your tools are skills and equipment, and a little advance preparation can give you a lot of options.

yacht 3 points

On this page:

Solve difficult bottoms with different anchors, dealing with tough anchoring conditions, other situations that may prove difficult, special gear (how & why to use it).

We can solve most challenging bottoms with a different choice of anchor, but that's not always an option since you can't stock your bow locker with every type of anchor on the market. Most sailors have two anchors - a primary all around anchor, and a backup. When choosing your backup anchor, make sure it's different from your primary, since two anchors of the same type don't buy you anything with varying bottom conditions.

With most tricky bottoms, more scope is always better than less. So if your anchorage has the swing space, add an extra helping of rope or chain when you set.

Most difficult bottom: rocks

Rocky bottoms and solid rock are probably the most difficult anchoring, since it's nearly impossible for an anchor to cut into the bottom and set. Solid rock is trickier than a rock strewn bottom, and nearly impossible to get a good holding without a lot of weight. A spade or plow can find something to dig into with a rocky bottom, but not much can hold on solid rock.

Fisherman's anchor

The fisherman's anchor is a good choice for rocky bottoms, since it relies more on weight and catching than on digging in like fluke and spade anchors. Mushroom anchors can work, but both mushroom and fisherman's anchors must be heavy to hold, since the weight of the anchor has to do a lot of the work.

On-shore anchors

As an alternative to anchoring, consider using things on shore like trees and other fixtures with a deep water stern anchor. If you can get a stern anchor to set outside the rocks, you can run a line to shore and keep your boat in place.

Use a trip line instead

And if you know you're anchoring in rocks, consider using a trip line. Or if you have a slotted anchor shank, like you'll find on a Rocna, Manson, or other modern anchor, be sure to move the shackle there before you drop anchor - it will help you recover it and decrease your chances of getting stuck fast.

Anchors don't dig in in soft silt

Anchors tend to just sink into silt and soft mud, then drag through without digging in when you try to set them. Thick silt isn't much thicker than water at the top of it, and your anchor has nothing to catch. Anchoring in a really soft bottom requires patience, since your best technique is to let the anchor settle into the soft mud before you try to set.

Drop your anchor in the selected spot, but when you get some scope out, let it sit for a while. A long while - in some places it can take fifteen to thirty minutes for your anchor to sink through the ooze to reach med think enough to catch.

Once you're gotten your anchor nestled into the silt, try setting it gently. Idling back on it in reverse should help it catch in the thicker mud under the soft stuff. Avoid a final "hard set" with this bottom type unless you're expecting some wind.

Avoid false sets in weeds and grass

Like rock bottoms, your best choice for a weedy bottom is an anchor which works well in weeds. Some anchors can not cut through the tough mat of roots and fiber under a weed bed, or have flukes which tangle in the vegetation instead of digging in.

Roll bar anchors will work

Modern roll bar anchors do pretty well in weeds and grass, but some plow and fluke anchors can be quite difficult to set. If your primary anchor is a CQR, fluke, or other anchor known to fare poorly in grass and weeds, try another anchor if you have one.

One caution - even the best anchors for grass and weeds may "false set" on you. They can catch on the grass and weeds and feel like they've caught bottom, but if they load up or the wind shifts, you may have troubles. Take extra care to back down hard to make sure your anchor is dug into the bottom.

Avoid coral heads if you can

Coral heads or "bommies" are in tropical anchorages all over the world, and some remote atolls give you no choice but to anchor near or among them. Anchoring badly among bommies can cause a mess - your anchor chain will get snaked and wrapped through and around the coral heads. Not only is this hard to get out of, but it is terrible for the coral and you should avoid it.

Set up floats

The first thing to look for around coral heads is a large patch of clear sand to drop your anchor. It may be tough to find, but you don't want to drop your anchor on top of hard coral. You won't be likely to find enough open sand for your whole swing range, so you'll need to rig up some floats to keep your chain out of the coral.

Your goal is to get the last 1/3 of the chain to hold you on the bottom, but use your string of three or more fenders to keep the rest of the chain suspended in the water above the coral heads. Your fenders will almost completely sink while you do this, but they will keep the chain from getting tangled.

Start by making your initial drop on that patch of clear sand and let up from one third to one half your expected rode out. Then tie a fender to the chain with a stout line and let out another 1/3 of the remaining rode. Tie on another fender, and let out another 1/3 of the remaining rode. Tie on a third fender, and let out the remaining rode and snub it.

Anything which reduces visibility and hearing, adds shifting forces on the boat, or increases the loads on your anchor will add a challenge to your successful anchoring. If you plan and practice, you can get through it and get a good set.

Communication is key when you have someone on the bow and someone on the helm, and well-practiced hand signals are a must. Headsets can help, but if you use them, make sure you have hand signals to back them up.

Prepare in case of heavy weather

Anchoring in bad weather is fraught with difficulty. Driving rain cuts visibility, howling winds can make communication near impossible even with headsets, and heavy wind will drive you out of position quickly as you try to get the anchor down to the bottom.

The best first step to anchoring in bad weather is to talk your plan out ahead of time. You may have trouble communicating with the person on the bow, so if everyone on board knows the plan for anchoring, you'll do better if you can't hear each other or see hand signals. Heavy weather anchoring cuts across a lot of the tough conditions in our list, but if you're trying to escape a bad weather system, you may have little choice but to deal with it once you've ducked out of open water into a more protected anchorage.

High wind will make positioning hard

High wind causes several problems anchoring. The first is the effect on the boat - with a lot of wind, your boat's windage is much more pronounced, and as you slow down to anchor, it becomes harder to hold the boat on station and put the hook where you want it. Your bow is much more likely to fall off, and while idling into position you may even get blown to a stop or pushed backwards. If you stop, you lose the ability to steer and the wind may push you out of position.

When holding station to drop anchor, try these tips:

  • Use a little more engine power and come up to your anchor drop point with a little more speed to maintain steerage. Not a lot more, but an extra knot can keep your ability to steer.
  • You will blow backward quickly, so don't let the boat fall back until you've got enough rode out to hit bottom. Use small pulses of the engine forward to stay in place without overrunning the chain.
  • If you have main furling, cheating a tiny amount of sail out can help keep you pointed into the wind, like an anchoring sail on your stern might. You don't want too much sail area, since it may start driving the boat forward or even cause heeling. But a small triangle can help keep the boat in irons so you aren't swinging all over as you drop.

Communication will be harder

The other complication is communication - wind won't affect your hand signals, but wind noise can mess with radios by causing a loud hiss in your microphones that drowns out voices. If you use headsets with foam wind mufflers, make sure they're installed. If you don't have them or are using handhelds, a little piece of cloth can cut that wind hissing right out. A thin sock slipped over a handheld radio looks silly, but does a great job muffling wind noise.

Low visibility requires lights or radar

You can lose your visibility in heavy rain, fog, or darkness. Your solutions for each are a little different, as is the impact.

The primary risk of using hand signals without radios is lost visibility; if you can't see the bow, you can't communicate. In darkness, the fix is easy. Make sure bow and helm people have lights, and shine them on your hands when signaling (and not in each other's eyes!). Headlamps work well for this, since helm and bow both need their hands.

Lights won't help you in driving rain or fog, there you will need to do your best with hand signals or use a waterproof radio on the bow. Fortunately, rain and fog are rarely heavy enough to block vision from the helm to the bow, but if it is talking, your plan out first is critical.

If you have radar, make sure it's on when you come into an anchorage in poor visibility, and zoom it in far enough to distinguish boats and estimate distances. While everyone should have lights, we all know there's no guarantee of it. And judging distance from anchor lights in the dark is difficult. Whether it's fog, rain, or dark, your radar can light up the boats around you and give you a clue about their relative positions as you pick your place to drop anchor.

Tidal currents may cause drag

Dropping in tidal currents isn't difficult, but staying anchored can be. A strong pull in one direction can give you a great set, but when the tide changes and starts ripping a couple of knots in the other direction, it can pull your anchor out and cause you to drag.

When anchoring in a tidal zone, always note where you are in the tidal cycle - how much time until the next high or low, and which way it's moving. For the most extreme tidal currents, consider a Bahamian Moor with your two anchors in line with the current. For more details, see our article on using two anchors .

REMEMBER - most places with tidal currents also have a pretty big tidal swing. When you figure out your scope, you need to calculate your ratio from the top of high tide, so you don't get caught up short if you anchor near low tide.

If you anchor with only one anchor, take care to set extra hard, and use extra scope if there is room. Expect your anchor to reset every tide cycle, so the extra rode will give it time to re-bury itself, or even keep it from resetting.

Avoid anchoring in deep water in bad weather

Anchoring out in deep water always feels like standing on the edge of a cliff; there was never quite enough grip to really rest or feel comfortable. But sometimes, you have no choice - it's all there is, but it may be a little nerve-wracking.

If you have an all-chain rode, you can anchor in water up to about 1/3 of your rode length in calm and settled conditions . The conditions are the key - if you can not get out enough scope for wind and weather, you should not stay in a deep anchorage if bad weather develops.

For more detail, check out our article on deep water anchoring:

How to Anchor a Boat in Deep Water (like the ocean)

Sometimes, anchoring isn't so hard, but once you get settled in, you realize things aren't as comfortable as you hoped. When we dropped anchor at Santa Cruz in the Galapagos, it was comfortable when we arrived. But a few hours later, the ocean swell started coming in, and the wind on our bow kept us pointed across the incoming rollers, resulting in a sickening side-to-side roll as the boat swung at anchor.

This is avoidable.

Roll and Chop

If you're in an anchor with a lot of roll in it, set a stern anchor to point your bow into the roll and chop instead of letting your boat swing in the breeze and roll side to side. The up and down motion is much easier on your inner ear and will let you sleep at night. Don't worry about swinging into the wind unless you're expecting bad weather. But if you're expecting bad weather, an anchorage subject to swell isn't a good place to be, anyway.

The key is to keep the roll from hitting the side of your boat and creating that horrid motion.

Tight Quarters

Anchorages can be tight in two ways - they can be crowded, or they can be small or narrow. For crowded anchorages, look at our specific advice on handling a crowd .

With a tight anchorage, you don't want to risk swinging into shallows or bumping into rocks or other hazards. Fortunately, there are a few ways to deal with this.

  • Use a stern anchor
  • Try a Bahamian Moor if there is room; it should keep your boat swinging on a single point.
  • Tie one or more lines to shore to stop you from swinging.

The goal of these approaches is to keep your boat fixed in position or in a very limited swing radius. The best tool will depend on where you are anchoring and how much space you have with sound things to tie off to.

The market is awash with products to help you anchor more easily, but do they all work? The short answer is that some of them can help you, in some circumstances, but the effectiveness of some of them is debatable. And you can cause difficulties if you misuse them.

A kellet is a weight you attach to a midpoint in the catenary on the anchor rode. The theory is that it pulls the rode down more sharply to the bottom and gives a better angle of attack for pulling loads on the anchor shank. This is supposed to help increase holding power. Evidence and testing shows that once the wind blows hard enough to straighten out the rode, the effect of a kellet goes almost to zero for adding holding power.

That doesn't mean they have no value, especially with rope/chain combination rodes. A kellet can reduce the swinging and dancing your boat does at anchor by holding the rode down. But don't expect it to perform any miracles for you while anchored out in a forty-knot blow.

Anchor swivels eliminate twisting in the rode when you pull up the anchor. Some anchors are prone to spin like propellers when they hauled through the water, and this can put an undesirable twist in chain and rope. Too much twist can cause binding and knotting, and make pulling the anchor up in the right orientation to slide into the bow roller challenging.

If you are experience twist in your rode, look into swivels. Some manufacturers suggest them for their anchors, so heed their advice if you choose their anchors.

But an unnecessary swivel adds another weak point to your anchor rode, so if there is no need for one, don't add it. It's one more moving part to corrode, seize up, or break.

Trip lines are handy ways to get leverage on our anchor from points other than the end of the shank where the rode attaches. Many anchors provide extra loops, rings, and attachment points for a trip line, and they can be very helpful with obstructions on the bottom. Everything from rocks to discarded junk can catch on your anchor, and pulling a plow from the front may be a better way to dislodge it than hauling straight up on the shank.

You can rig trip lines with a float, or a line can be secure to the rode when the anchor is set. Either way, you need to take some care that the trip line doesn't tangle into the anchor or break loose until you need it.

Marker Floats

Marking a trip line with a float is an easy and convenient way to keep your trip line clear of the business end of the anchor, while making retrieval easier since you'll know exactly where your anchor is.

But they will make you very unpopular in a crowded anchorage, and you should only use them when there is plenty of space around you.

Remember - everyone swings together in a crowded field, and there will be times when your boat will swing right over someone else's anchor. If that anchor has a floating ball and a line on it, there's a risk it can bang your boat or get fouled on your rudder or propeller. A marker float increases how much open water you and your boat take up, and few people use them for this reason.

US employers scaled back hiring in April. How that could let the Fed cut interest rates

WASHINGTON (AP) — The nation’s employers pulled back on their hiring in April but still added a decent 175,000 jobs in a sign that persistently high interest rates may be starting to slow the robust U.S. job market.

Friday’s government report showed that last month’s hiring gain was down sharply from the blockbuster increase of 315,000 in March. And it was well below the 233,000 gain that economists had predicted for April.

Yet the moderation in the pace of hiring, along with a slowdown last month in wage growth, will likely be welcomed by the Federal Reserve, which has kept interest rates at a two-decade high to fight persistently elevated inflation. Hourly wages rose a less-than-expected 0.2% from March and 3.9% from a year earlier, the smallest annual gain since June 2021.

The Fed has been delaying any consideration of interest rate cuts until it gains more confidence that inflation is steadily slowing toward its 2% target. Rate cuts by the central bank would, over time, reduce the cost of mortgages, auto loans and other consumer and business borrowing.

Stock prices jumped and bond yields fell Friday after the jobs report was released on hopes that rate cuts might now be more likely sometime in the coming months.

(AP Photo/Andrew Harnik, File)

“A slowdown in payrolls to a decent pace to start the second quarter, coupled with a slowing in wage gains, will be welcome news to (the Fed’s) policymakers,” said Rubeela Farooqi, chief U.S. economist at High Frequency Economics. “Current readings also support the view that rates cuts – and not hikes – are the base case scenario for the Fed this year.’’

The state of the economy is weighing on voters’ minds as the November presidential campaign intensifies. Despite the strength of the job market, Americans remain generally exasperated by high prices, and many of them assign blame to President Joe Biden.

Even with the April hiring slowdown, last month’s job growth amounted to a solid increase, though it was the lowest monthly gain since October. With the nation’s households continuing their steady spending, many employers have had to keep hiring to meet their customer demand.

Though the unemployment rate ticked up from 3.8% to 3.9% in April, it was the 27th straight month in which the rate has remained below 4%, tying the longest such streak since the 1960s.

“Certainly a cooler jobs report than we’ve seen,’’ said Michael Pugliese, senior economist at Wells Fargo. “But it’s not like it was disastrous: 175,000 is still pretty strong, and unemployment below 4% is still pretty healthy.’’ He expects hiring, which averaged a vigorous 242,000 from February through April, to continue to decelerate.

Last month’s hiring was led by healthcare companies, which added 56,000 jobs. Warehouse and transportation companies added 22,000 and retailers 20,000. Government at all levels, which had been hiring aggressively, added just 8,000 jobs in April, the lowest monthly total since December 2022.

Local governments didn’t add any jobs at all last month. Paul Ashworth of Capital Economics noted that state and local government revenue has recently slumped.

Temporary help jobs fell by more than 16,000. These positions are often seen as a potential indicator of where the job market is headed because companies sometimes try out temps before committing to full-time hires.

The share of the adult population that either has a job or is looking for one was unchanged at 62.7%, well below pre-pandemic levels.

America’s job market has repeatedly proved more robust than almost anyone had predicted. When the Fed began aggressively raising rates two years ago to fight a punishing inflation surge, most economists expected the resulting jump in borrowing costs to cause a recession and drive unemployment to painfully high levels.

The Fed raised its benchmark rate 11 times from March 2022 to July 2023, taking it to the highest level since 2001. Inflation did steadily cool as it was supposed to — from a year-over-year peak of 9.1% in June 2022 to 3.5% in March.

Yet the resilient strength of the job market and the overall economy, fueled by steady consumer spending, has kept inflation persistently above the Fed’s 2% target.

The job market has been showing other signs of eventually slowing. This week, for example, the government reported that job openings fell in March to 8.5 million , the fewest in more than three years. Still, that is a large number of vacancies: Before 2021, monthly job openings had never topped 8 million, a threshold they have now exceeded every month since March 2021.

On a month-over-month basis, consumer inflation hasn’t declined since October. The 3.5% year-over-year inflation rate for March was still running well above the Fed’s 2% target.

Steven Kramer, CEO of WorkJam, an online platform that helps businesses like retailers and hospitality companies manage their hourly workers’ tasks and training, said that he is noticing that pressure to raise wages has eased. But he is seeing companies focusing more on offering flexibility in shifts for workers who are increasingly juggling multiple jobs to pay their bills in the face of still stubborn inflation. “They’re allowing workers to swap a shift or pick up a shift,” he said.

Onur Kutlubay, CEO of You Parcel, a Totowa, New Jersey-based company that provides shipping services to small e-commerce businesses, said that it’s still challenging to find skilled workers like forklift operators and supervisors, while unskilled workers are easier to find.

You Parcel has 43 workers across eight warehouse and storage facilities, most of them in New Jersey. Kutlubay said he’s had to keep increasing wages for its highly skilled employees. In 2020, skilled workers started at $16; now, hourly wages start at $25. For unskilled workers, the starting wages are now $16; in 2020, the figure was around $11.

He noted people are preferring to work as Uber drivers or work for delivery companies such as DoorDash.“The jobs give them the opportunity to get some tips from customers, ” he said. “They tend to be more attractive to people. That keeps them away from regular jobs like the ones that we have.”
