Prison Escapees Hijacked Boat of Missing American Couple in Grenada, Police Say

Kathy Brandel and Ralph Hendry were traveling on their yacht when three prison escapees took control of the vessel and “disposed” of the couple, the authorities said on Monday.

By Johnny Diaz

The authorities in Grenada said on Monday that they believed an American couple who had been traveling in their catamaran in the Caribbean were hijacked by three escaped prisoners who “disposed” of them last week.

The couple, Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel, had departed from Virginia and were spending the winter cruising in the Caribbean, where they went missing while sailing off Grenada. On Feb. 21, their boat turned up empty in neighboring St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

On Monday, the Royal Grenada Police Force confirmed that three prison escapees in Grenada made their getaway after they hijacked the catamaran, called Simplicity, with Mr. Hendry and Ms. Brandel aboard.

“Information suggests that, while traveling between Grenada and St. Vincent, they disposed of the occupants,” Commissioner Don McKenzie of the Royal Grenada Police Force said at a news conference on Monday.

The police would not say explicitly that they believed Mr. Hendry and Ms. Brandel were dead but that they were still considered missing.

“We have nothing conclusive to say that the individuals are dead,” he said.

“What I can say to the family is my condolences,” adding that he was “still hoping for as what I consider a positive outcome which is, we still have the hope that a worst-case scenario will not be a reality.”

According to the Salty Dawg Sailing Association , a nonprofit that brings together sailing and cruising enthusiasts, a skipper notified it on Feb. 21 that a member’s yacht, Simplicity, was found anchored and abandoned off a beach on the southern coast of St. Vincent.

The skipper boarded the catamaran and noted that its owners were not onboard, the association’s statement said. The missing boat owners were identified as Mr. Hendry, 66, and Ms. Brandel, 71, by the association and Ms. Brandel’s son, Nick Buro.

Mr. Hendry and Ms. Brandel, who were married for 27 years, were experienced sailors who lived on their boat.

They recently completed their sailing club’s “Caribbean Rally” — cruising from Hampton, Va., to the island of Antigua to end 2023 with a celebration — and they were spending the remainder of the winter cruising the Caribbean, according to a statement from the club.

The association said that it had a tracking map to follow members’ boats and that it showed that Simplicity was anchored in Grenada before docking off St. Vincent.

Separately, the Royal Grenada Police Force said in a Feb. 22 statement that three men who escaped from a prison in Grenada on Feb. 18 made their way to St. Vincent using a yacht that had been docked in the St. George area of Grenada.

The prisoners were recaptured on Feb. 21, the same day that the couple’s vessel was found.

The authorities identified the prisoners as Trevon Robertson, 19; Abita Stanislaus, 25; and Ron Mitchell, 30.

They had been previously charged, jointly, in a violent robbery case in December. Mr. Mitchell also faced various separate charges that included causing harm, indecent assault and rape, the Grenada police said.

It was not immediately clear on Monday what charges they may face regarding the couple’s disappearance.

The police commissioner said a team of investigators from Grenada and the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Coast Guard were dispatched to St. Vincent to help in the investigation.

In a joint family statement on Saturday, Mr. Buro and Bryan Hendry, Mr. Hendry’s son, thanked the cruising community for its support and help in the search but asked them to stand down.

“We also want to applaud the St. Vincent authorities for their quick actions in securing Simplicity and their brave, swift response that led to the apprehension of three dangerous fugitives,” according to the statement.

Bob Osborn, president of the sailing club, described the couple as warmhearted and capable and called their disappearance “a very upsetting event.”

A GoFundMe page started by a family friend described Mr. Hendry and Ms. Brandel as “experienced adventurers” and said they had “spent their retirement sailing aboard Simplicity, spending summers in New England and embracing the warmth of Caribbean winters.”

Demolition of Cape Coral's Yacht Club slated for April will cost almost $1 million

yacht singapore club

The city of Cape Coral is preparing for the demolition of the Yacht Club and its facilities in April as it awaits permits.

Cape Coral's Yacht Club Community Park , which includes a yacht basin, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a ballroom, and a beach, has served as a popular attraction and staple for the city since the 1960s but is set to undergo major renovations.

"It should start in April," said David Hyyti, interim director of capital improvements, during a committee of the whole meeting on Wednesday.

Demolition of the Yacht Club was previously set for late December/January. Despite plans for its renovation, Hurricane Ian on September 28, 2022, demolished the buildings and shoreline, requiring a massive change in plans.

Here's what we know:

What are the current plans for the Yacht Club?

The city had planned  in early 2022 to close the park for two years  for renovations that included replacing the seawalls and marina wet slips, replacing the harbormaster building and boat ramp, and building a three-story parking garage and beach restrooms. The beach would also be expanded, and utilities relocated.

Then Hurricane Ian struck, delaying plans, and shuttering the beach for more than a year.

Since that time, Kimley Horn, a consulting firm focusing on public and private developments, has been working with the city to revamp renovations.

These plans now include a new two-story community center to replace the ballroom, removing the tennis courts, rearranging the area to accommodate a four-story parking garage, a new restaurant, and a new resort-style pool.

Previous discussions  said the project could cost up to $100 million.

Who has been contracted?

Johnson-Laux Construction, a full-service construction management firm that operates out of Winter Garden, has been contracted for the demolition and deconstruction of the Yacht Club.

The firm is also tasked with preserving a portion of the old ballroom building, which includes interior ceiling beams, stonework, a fountain, and the front glass doors with the Yacht Club written on them.

What will it cost?

A contract was awarded to the construction firm on Feb 26 after piggybacking off other entities' existing contracts for a fixed price of $987,716.04.

How long will it take?

Once the permits from the Army Corps of Engineers and the Florida Department of Environmental Protections are approved, work will begin within 30 days and take 60 days to complete.

Construction will not affect the now-open beach area.

If the work starts in April, complete demolition could be finished by July or August.

Miss Manners: Shocking! Yacht club members acting like snobs.

DEAR MISS MANNERS: My husband’s old boss and his wife invited us to join a local yacht club. Ever since we joined, the wife has been bubbling with snippy comments about my grooming and hairstyle, alluding to where I may have purchased my clothing, and making numerous misguided class-oriented statements.

She seems to have brought me into the club as a target, like a clay pigeon. In their eyes, we were good enough to be nominated and sponsored, but now that we’re in, I’m considered an “improvement project” by these elders.

I have tried to generously assume the differences are generational (80s vs. 50s) or cultural (I’m not alcoholic, but the sponsors are markedly so).

She’s made the club a lot less fun by biting my ankles. My husband insists the chiding will go away in time. I see no end to my sponsor’s backhanded comments, though, and no longer find the scene so charming.

Is there a way to trim my sponsor’s snippy commentary without reminding her that alcohol makes her a poor host?

GENTLE READER: Let’s also avoid telling her that alcoholism is a “cultural difference.”

The problem is actually not one of culture or generation -- you have a problem of rank. The husband was your husband’s boss, and they were your sponsors at the club. Both incline you to be not just deferential, but grateful.

Miss Manners does not believe that the wife’s rudeness cancels out past kindnesses, but you are now equals -- as members and adults. You should not feel obliged to spend time with them if it is a burden.

DEAR MISS MANNERS: My son is getting married next year to a lovely person with whom I have a good relationship. They are currently perusing venues, although they are unsure how many guests they will invite.

Would it be poor manners to send them a possible guest list for my son’s side, with tiers of importance -- such as aunts/uncles, then cousins, and so on -- so they can see what they’re in for if they move to the next tier?

My husband says they should just invite whom they feel closest to, but I see a problem with that -- for example, if they choose three cousins but not all five.

My heart tells me it is their wedding and they can do what they want, but I’m not sure I can deal with the fallout of hurt feelings for the next 20 years if they decide to be choosy.

GENTLE READER: To whom did your husband offer his advice? If it was only meant for you -- as a way of saying that the time for parental advice has passed -- Miss Manners must disagree with him.

If it was meant for your son, then we instead disagree on what constitutes good parental advice. Your son should be warned, if he does not already know, that you will not be the only one who has to listen to 20 years of hurt feelings if he distributes invitations capriciously.

As to ranking the relatives, this is best done verbally; if such a list were to be written down and inadvertently forwarded, 20 years would be a light sentence for the resulting storm.

Miss Manners: Yacht club sponsor keeps making backhanded comments

Dear Miss Manners: My husband’s old boss and his wife invited us to join a local yacht club. Ever since we joined, the wife has been bubbling with snippy comments about my grooming and hairstyle, alluding to where I may have purchased my clothing, and making numerous misguided class-oriented statements.

She seems to have brought me into the club as a target, like a clay pigeon.
