Adventure Tours Hawaii

Molokini snorkel catamaran in wailea.

The Molokini Snorkel Catamaran in Wailea is the only South Maui charter to offer daily departures from Makena/South Maui. From this location, it only takes 20 minutes to sail to Molokini Crater, which means less time on the open water and more time snorkeling.

Snorkel equipment, instruction, and unique menus are included on all tours. We have marine naturalists on-board, so you can learn more about all of the fascinating underwater life you see!

We offer shuttle service from Wailea Resorts to and from our check-in location at Maluaka Beach.

What to Expect

The adventure begins on the beach at Maluaka where you will board the catamaran using the water-stairs that allow you to climb up right from the beach! From there we set sail for Molokini Crater, the top snorkeling destination for visitors to Maui.

With the clearest water in Hawaii and over 250 species of fish, experiencing Molokini’s pristine reef and marine life without the crowds is our privilege due to our exclusive South Maui location.

We time our 65-foot luxury catamaran’s tours to maximize exclusivity whenever we enter the water.

Sunrise Deluxe Snorkel

Experience Molokini Crater alone! This Sunrise Deluxe Snorkel is truly the most exclusive and beautiful snorkeling tour on Maui.

It begins with Maui Coffee, Hot Chocolate, fresh warm cinnamon rolls and an epic sunrise. Look for stunning views of Haleakala and the Big Island of Hawaii as the sun rises.

Due to our South Maui location, loading at Maluaka Beach in Makena, Kai Kanani is the first snorkel boat into Molokini in the morning, enjoying 45 minutes of pristine solitude in the clearest water in Hawaii, with up to 200 feet of visibility. Then we head back to Maui and snorkel with the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle at the world-famous Turtle Town of Makena.

The menu is varied with several courses coming out throughout the day. After cinnamon rolls, enjoy yogurt parfait and fresh strawberries. After snorkeling, we bring out the big spread with egg frittatas, ham and cheese breakfast sliders and an open bar with mimosas and bloody marys.

We finish the tour with a leisurely cruise down the Makena Coast, bringing you back to Maluaka Beach with your whole day still ahead of you. It’s the ultimate start to your day in paradise.

Signature Deluxe Snorkel

The Signature Deluxe Snorkel is our most popular tour, with two snorkeling locations. During this tour we offer snorkeling, first at Molokini Crater, and then again along the Makena Coast at Turtle Town reef.

The tour is in the heart of the day when the Maui sun lights up the colors of the fish and coral below and you can take in the full spectrum of the beauty of Molokini and Turtle Town's incredible reef. During the snorkel it is likely to swim with the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle.

The waters surrounding Maui are very clear, which means that you can see fish up to hundreds of feet away. Molokini and Turtle Town are home to quiet, undisturbed bodies of water. At these tropical coral reefs you can easily see dozens of different types of fish and aquatic life, making it perfect to snorkel at!

During the tour, enjoy a bountiful spread of locally-sourced appetizers throughout the day, such a fresh fruit salad, locally baked muffins, hummus and vegetables, etc. After snorkeling, enjoy an open bar with Kona beers on tap and local spirits. Take in the stunning views of Makena, Haleakala and South Maui on a leisurely cruise to finish up the tour.

A Molokini snorkeling adventure aboard Calypso is the most fun on Maui! This stable, high-speed, triple-decker catamaran will get you to two snorkel sites fast: Molokini Crater and Turtle Town, and with all the equipment you need and plenty of food on board, what more could you ask for?

You’ll be welcomed aboard by our friendly crew and enjoy a delicious, hearty breakfast. After everyone is settled in, it’s off to the most popular underwater destination in Maui for some morning Molokini snorkeling! While you’re enjoying the feel of the ocean wind in your hair, from December through April, watch the horizon for the incredible humpback whales!

Even if you’ve never snorkeled before, or are not a strong swimmer, you can still snorkel! The crew will patiently instruct you on how to use the snorkel gear. If you don’t want to snorkel or swim, the Calypso has a glass bottom in one section, so you can watch your friends and the fish. If you decide to join them later, reaching the water is simple. Wide staircases are lowered through the water’s surface. If you’d rather go express, the boat also has two water slides and a second deck jumping-off point.

After your Molokini morning snorkeling, Calypso will whisk you to Turtle Town – a second snorkeling spot. Off the south side of Maui, Turtle Town is home to a plethora of large sea turtles as well as dynamic reef fish. For lunch we serve turkey and ham Hawaiian sweet roll sliders with Mediterranean pasta salad, chocolate chip cookies, and triple chocolate brownie bites. The vegetarian option is Hawaiian sweet roll sliders with lettuce, tomato, cucumber, alfalfa sprouts, and avocado mayo. Unlimited ice-cold soda, juice and water are served all day long. Fish of all kinds will swim by, busily conducting their beautiful business. While you’re exploring, you may see parrotfish, black triggerfish, and longnose butterflyfish. BOAT AMENITIES

Two water slides.

As if your Molokini snorkeling tour couldn’t get any more fun, Calypso sports two exciting water slides. One zips you straight up and off the bow with a thrilling drop. The other is a bit calmer, but still quite fun. The whole family can go up and down, and around and around all day. Slide, shout, splash, swim, climb stairs, and do it again. Why not? You’re on vacation!

EASY OCEAN ACCESS!

Almost every place you look, Calypso has created a path straight to the place you want to be – the ocean! 11 individual dive stairs lead you right to the water, and each has its own handrail for a convenient entry and exit. The rear dive step is particularly cool. It’s lowered directly into the sea, which is quite similar to boats visiting the Great Barrier Reef! You’re going to love it.

LARGE SHADY CABIN!

We understand you want to work on your tan, but there’s a good chance you’ll need a break from the island sun at some point. No worries! Calypso’s got you covered – literally! The shady main cabin gets plenty of airflow, and will provide all the respite you need. You’ll find comfortable chairs, tables to accommodate groups of all sizes, and – of course – the tasty food and drink counter.

SNORKELING INSTRUCTION!

Our crew members are advanced ocean explorers, and they will explain the snorkel equipment they provide. You will be outfitted with a snorkel set that fits to your face and feet, and you will learn what to expect on your first float above the reef. Feel free to ask questions throughout your Molokini snorkeling tour. When you are ready to hop in, go for it!

GUEST SAFETY!

First and foremost, we focus on safety. Calypso is a United States Coast Guard certified passenger vessel. We take care to abide by all the USCG applicable rules and regulations, and we carry all the necessary safety equipment that is required. We also provide safety instructions and information about the snorkel sites and the boat.

Glass-Bottom Windows!

Once the boat stops, you can take advantage of one of the rarest amenities of any boat in Maui. Descend beneath the lower deck into Calypso’s glass-bottom viewing room. Four panels of large aquarium-style glass transform the ocean into, well, an aquarium! There is space to sit, relax, and really take in the lovely coralline views. Bring the younger kids so they can see what their older siblings are discovering outside the boat.

COMFORTABLE SEATING!

4,000 square feet of comfortable, intimate and covered seating is found on three separate decks. There are tables for most every seat. Each deck is outfitted with speakers, so no matter where you’d care to sit, you will be able to hear the narration, safety information, and jokes from captain and crew. For the best tan and the best views, go up to the top deck. When you return to your seat after your ocean adventure, no worries – every chair was made to get wet and still feel cozy.

FLOTATION DEVICES!

Should you care to spend your water time strictly on the surface, Calypso’s got all kinds of ways to float you. Included in your Molokini snorkeling tour are pool noodles, float belts, boogie boards, and life vests of all sizes. Wetsuits can help you float, too, and they are available to rent. For the whippersnappers, we’ve got kickboards complete with viewing windows! These boards are so comfy, kids have been known to nap on them while checking out the fishes.

CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES!

Imagine yourself happily spent after snorkeling Maui’s blue waters and exploring the huge boat you’ve been riding. You’ve made friends with the fun, responsive, and dynamic captain and crew. You and your family are relaxing in the shady cabin when out of the blue, your favorite crew member brings around a delightful surprise – cookies! We can tell you from tasty experience that biting into a chocolate chip cookie is a fantastic way to end an incredible day at sea. And take heart – we have plenty to go around!

TWO FRESHWATER SHOWERS!

Once your Molokini and Turtle Town snorkeling sessions are complete, and you’re pau playing in the sea, it’s super nice to rinse off all the salt. “Pau” means “finished” in Hawaiian, and Calypso has two freshwater showers available for you to use. The shower water is warm, too!

2ND DECK JUMP PLATFORM!

Are you a daredevil, or do you want to be? On Calypso’s high second deck, the “leap of faith” awaits. Do you think you’re ready to take the leap?

THREE RESTROOMS!

Calypso is equipped with three restrooms – known as “marine heads” once you’re aboard any boat. The heads are located on the lower, main deck for your convenience.

Molokini Crater is the top snorkeling destination for visitors to Maui, with the clearest water in Hawaii and over 250 species of fish. Experiencing Molokini’s pristine reef and marine life without the crowds is Kai Kanani’s privilege due to our exclusive South Maui location, timing our 65-foot luxury catamaran tours to maximize exclusivity whenever we enter the water.

The Signature Deluxe Snorkel is our most popular tour, with two snorkeling locations, placed in the heart of the day when the Maui sun lights up the colors of the fish and coral below, and you can take in the full spectrum of the beauty of Molokini’s incredible reef. Then, snorkel along the Makena Coast to swim with the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle.*

Chances are, even if you’ve never been to Maui yourself, you’ve heard of just how beautiful the island is. Even if you haven’t, then at least you know that Hawaii is a favorite vacation destination for millions of people! Not only is Maui pretty nice to look at, but it makes for some out-of-this-world snorkeling!

The waters surrounding Maui are very clear, which means that you can see fish up to hundreds of feet away. There are also several beaches that are home to quiet, undisturbed bodies of water. At these beaches, you can easily see dozens of different types of fish and aquatic life, making it perfect to snorkel at!

Enjoy a bountiful spread of locally sourced food throughout the day, courtesy of Wailea’s own Spoon & Key Market,  finishing with a gourmet lunch. After snorkeling, enjoy an open bar with local beers, wine, and spirits. Take in the stunning views of Makena, Haleakala, and South Maui on a leisurely cruise to finish up the tour.

We offer a shuttle service from Wailea Resorts to and from our check-in location at Maluaka Beach . Space is limited, so contact us to reserve your spot. We look forward to seeing you aboard!

* All tour locations are subject to weather and at the captain’s discretion. Safety is our top concern at Kai Kanani, and we apologize if there is any inconvenience due to weather-related cancellations or changes.

Molokini Crater

Molokini crater

ABOUT MOLOKINI

Molokini is one of only three volcanic calderas in the world.

It is located just a few miles off Maui’s shore and is Hawaii’s only island marine sanctuary. Scientists believe Molokini Crater formed about 150 thousand years ago.

Molokini rises from 300 feet below the ocean’s surface and is just under a half-mile wide and peaks at about 160 feet above sea level with half of it being hidden under the surface of the ocean. Divers and snorkelers flock from all around the world to experience the incredible underwater marine life.

SNORKELING EXPERIENCE

Island marine preserve

The isolation of Molokini Crater creates a unique snorkeling experience. There are significant reasons why snorkeling at Molokini is so special. The quality of the water surrounding Molokini is superior, providing unsurpassed clarity. Visibility is consistently excellent, often in excess of 150 feet. Molokini is rock, with no soil to wash down into the water.

Absent of sediment, the water is amazingly clear allowing excellent sunlight penetration. This enhanced sunlight feeds the algae living inside the coral. Offshore currents bring food, while flushing away what little sediment exists. The result is a uniquely healthy coral reef providing unsurpassed snorkeling. Located in the middle of Molokini, this reef is protected from waves and surges.

Nature Conservation

Inside the sheltered arms of the crater, Molokini is an amazing underwater Marine Sanctuary . Underwater at Molokini is a flourishing coral reef, where thousands of fish and marine animals cohabitate. Molokini’s shallow reef is teeming with a wide variety of colorful and fascinating fish and marine animals. You will experience a rare opportunity to closely observe the marine life at Molokini.

Your Molokini snorkel adventure is one you will cherish and not soon forget! Molokini is the ultimate snorkeling experience, and because of its crystal clear sheltered waters, Molokini snorkeling is a safe and unique adventure for the entire family. From its shallow calm waters, diverse marine life and beautiful coral reef, Molokini is superb.

Molokini Island was declared a Marine Life Conservation District in 1977. Since then, with increased concerns and interest in the health of Hawaii’s Reefs, the State of Hawaii in partnership with the University of Hawaii monitors the water quality and coral coverage at Molokini. Commercial operators including the Pride of Maui work together to protect Molokini, removing nothing from its waters.

Passenger vessels are tied to moorings, instead of dropping anchors on the reef. Fish and marine animals are not fed or harassed. From visitors to those of us who make a living by sharing the amazing beauty of Molokini with others, we’re all stewards and our protective measures are vital to the future sustainability of Molokini.

Seabirds crowd the steep slopes of Molokini. There are two primary species of nesting birds, Wedge-tailed Shearwaters and Bulwer’s Petrels. Over a thousand pairs nest in the rocky cliffs. The vast majority are Shearwaters, which feed at sea during the day, returning to their nests and chicks at night.

Brown Boobies also roost at Molokini, along with large Frigate birds, whose wingspan can reach 7 feet across. The Frigate birds with superior flying skills harass other seabirds until they drop their food, which the Frigate bird recovers in mid-air. Hawaiians named them Iwa birds, which translated means thief.

Important info to know

Molokini Crater history

During World War II, Molokini was used for target practice. Bombing and strafing left impact craters, shrapnel, and bullets along the slopes of Molokini, still visible today. It is believed that roosting and nesting birds avoided Molokini during the War, because of target practice and strafing maneuvers.

Molokini Crater Maui World History

What awaits you

Snorkeling at Molokini is unlike any other Maui snorkeling experience because of its unique dynamics and underwater majesty. Molokini has beautiful coral reef and marine animals With over 200 species of fish, many endemic to Hawaii,

exploring the coral reef is the experience of a lifetime. A rare treat is the gentle plankton-feeding Whale Shark, known to visit Molokini. Whale sharks are very large plankton feeders (aka vegetarians) which are not a threat to humans.

Best Maui Snuba Tour Experience

A shallow channel with coral heads, Tako Flats is an area of Molokini where you can find marine life including octopus, Manta ray, nudibranchs and barracudas. Good for beginner to intermediate divers.

A favorite for scuba divers that love the many hanging shelves around 50 feet down. Beneath the main shelf is another 80 feet of water before reaching the bottom. Under the ledges, red sponges and tube coral can be seen only with powerful lights.

11 Things To Know Before Snorkeling In Hawaii’s Molokini Crater

molokini crater snorkeling catamaran

jayzeek / Shutterstock

  • Activities and Interests
  • Destinations
  • Outdoor Activities
  • United States

A crescent-shaped spit of land rising some 160 feet off the west coast of Maui, the landmass we know as Molokini isn’t much to look at — at first. While it’s rocky and rather barren above the ocean, beneath the surface it’s an entirely different story. A site of spectacular beauty awaits snorkelers thanks to the partially submerged crater and a volcanic eruption that occurred some 230,000 years ago.

Snorkeling in Molokini Crater was an absolute highlight of my visit to Maui — one that I hope you get to experience soon. Here’s what you should know before you go.

1. Molokini Is The Best Snorkeling Spot In Hawaii

Snorkeling in Molokini Crater — now a Marine Life Conservation District — is hugely popular for a reason. It is certainly the best spot to snorkel in Hawaii, and may just be the best in all of North America.

The crater itself is far from Maui’s busy beaches, and the crater’s sunken bowl protects wildlife from the open ocean, making it the perfect calm nook to see up to 250 varieties of fish, birds, and mammals, plus 38 varieties of coral. In the early morning, the visibility is amazing, and, on a good day, you can see up to 150 feet deep.

If that weren’t enough, during certain times of year, you can even see whales in the distance! During my February visit, I actually heard them “singing” to one another beneath the surface. Their soothing sounds remain one of my favorite travel memories.

2. Arrive Early

No one likes getting up early in the morning. But when it comes to snorkeling in Molokini, waking up early is essential, since the early morning is when the water is at its calmest and clearest. By the late morning, the water is choppy, and visibility is limited. If you have the choice between a 6 a.m. departure and a 10 a.m. departure, choose the earlier option. And if you see a steeply discounted afternoon tour, know that visibility will be quite limited.

To mitigate the pain of that early morning wake-up call, try to plan your Molokini Crater snorkeling excursion early in your trip, presuming you’ve flown west to Hawaii from North America. Your internal clock will already be used to waking up before dawn, local time.

3. Complimentary Breakfast

Speaking of early mornings, most boat tours boast of offering a complimentary breakfast. This usually consists of store-bought pastries, fruit, yogurt, coffee, and pineapple-orange-guava juice. Some tours also offer quiche or breakfast sandwiches. The food is adequate, but not exactly exciting. The same can be said of the post-snorkel barbecue and booze on the longer tours.

The quality and variety vary by tour, and I think the best strategy is to go in with modest expectations and hope they’ll be exceeded. But since you really do work up an appetite while snorkeling, a hearty post-adventure brunch at a beachside cafe is a smart plan.

4. Depart From Makena If Possible

Most Molokini Crater snorkeling outfitters depart from Maalaea, but that’s not your only option. My personal preference is to depart from Makena with Kai Kanani . Makena is the closest community to the Molokini Crater. This means you get the shortest possible boat ride and you are (usually) the first to arrive, beating everyone else by at least 30 minutes.

Departing from Makena didn’t just mean a shorter boat ride — it also meant getting up ridiculously early, since my hotel was in Lahaina . But it was absolutely worth it. It was utterly magical to be alone with just my fellow boat mates as we explored the underwater world.

A super-early departure from Makena would also be a bonus for anyone with a very tight schedule. The trips from Maalaea usually clock in at about 6 hours, owing to the much longer boat ride, while the Makena trips typically last 3.5 hours and conclude before 10 a.m. However, the trade-off is that your social time on the boat is really limited.

5. Motion Sickness

Another benefit of the boat ride from Makena? If you are prone to seasickness, you will appreciate the short ride. The waters around Maui are rarely rough, but they aren’t exactly smooth! Even on the shorter trip, I felt a bit queasy and had to look at the horizon. (Though, as my husband points out, that isn’t exactly surprising given my history with boats. He didn’t feel a hint of nausea of any kind!)

If you do opt to depart from Maalaea, bring along some soothing ginger ale and a dose of anti-nausea medication. Many vessels advertise that they have their own special concoction of anti-seasickness juice. (Spoiler alert: It’s just lemon-lime soda with some freshly grated ginger mixed in.) Alas, my sensitive stomach didn’t appreciate that it was lukewarm, nor did I enjoy the texture of the ginger, so I was glad to have my usual standbys with me.

6. Know What To Expect

In general, most tours include about 45 minutes of snorkeling at Molokini Crater and another 30 to 45 minutes of snorkeling at a spot famous for sea turtles. All snorkeling equipment is included, including flotation devices for those who prefer to bob instead of swim, plus a light breakfast, drinks, and snacks as detailed.

You should bring your own rash-guard shirt as well as reef-friendly sunscreen. Wetsuits, rash-guard shirts, and underwater cameras are usually available for rent.

The tour staff consists of the captain and some additional deckhands. There is usually an onboard naturalist (our amazing guide helped us spot a shy octopus!) and sometimes a lifeguard. Tipping after the tour is encouraged, and $5 to $10 per person per staff member is standard.

7. The Size Of The Boat Matters

Molokini Crater tours range from small affairs of about two dozen people on a catamaran to much larger, multideck boats. The largest boats, like those offered by Quicksilver , come with waterslides, glass-bottom viewing platforms, and freshwater showers.

In my opinion, this is one experience where size absolutely matters. I was thrilled to experience Molokini Crater snorkeling as part of a much smaller group. However, that’s just my preference. The larger boats do offer more activities and amenities and can be a good option for families or groups of friends.

The price of a Molokini Crater snorkeling tour can vary widely, from as low as $100 per person to $200 per person plus taxes and tips.

8. Arrive In Your Swimsuit

There are bathrooms onboard, but these aren’t really meant to be changing facilities. Arrive with your swimsuit on underneath your clothing, and have a spare outfit to change into once you’re back on dry land and waiting for a hot meal at the cafe.

9. Bring Your Own Towel

On most boats, you must bring your own towel. I recommend bringing two — one for the boat and one to sit on when you return to your car. Most hotels have beach towels they will happily lend to you, or you can pick one up at any of the ABC convenience stores.

Aerial view of Molokini Crater, Hawaii.

10. Beach Loading And Unloading

In some cases, tour boats practice beach loading and unloading. This means that the passengers must wade out into the surf and onto the steps of the boat. Beach loading means fewer piers have to be built among the fragile coral and, in general, it’s a good thing. But if you’re not expecting it, you might feel awkward getting out to the boat this way.

First, expect to get wet as you walk across the surf (another reason to keep a spare outfit and towel in your car!). Bring footwear that you can easily slip on and off and that you don’t mind getting wet, like a pair of flip-flops. Finally, bring all your belongings in one easy-to-carry bag, like a backpack or a sturdy tote. Pack your cell phone, keys, and other valuables into a waterproof bag and place it securely in your main bag — not your pocket! It’s helpful to have your hands free to keep your balance as you walk into the shallow water and to grip the rails once you board.

11. Spiritual Significance

Finally, remember that you are a guest of the people of Hawaii. Molokini is more than just a beautiful nature preserve. It figures heavily in the legends and spiritual beliefs of Hawaiians, as do the animals you’re privileged to see. Wearing reef-friendly sunscreen, making an effort to avoid any possible contact with marine animals, and choosing a tour operator that practices sustainability isn’t just demonstrating sound environmental stewardship — it demonstrates your respect for this sacred region.

Molokini Boat Transportation

Kai Kanani Sailing

With the closest departure to Molokini Crater, Kai Kanani Maui catamaran cruise enjoys exclusive shore entry at Maluaka Beach in Makena. Get there faster on one of the most beautiful sailing catamarans in Maui, Hawaii. The Kai Kanani is never crowded due to the spacious deck and cabin area. Enjoy continental breakfast, deli lunch, beverages, beers on tap, and cocktails. You’ll be given quality snorkel gear, flotation devices, and snorkel instructions. Marine Naturalists will guide you through the waters as you arrive at Molokini Crater in less time than any other vessel! Kai Kanani offers sunset cruises as well.

check-in: South Beach Access at Maluaka Beach - Call: (808) 879-7218

Redline Boat

Redline Rafting

If you’re ready to spice up your snorkeling on Maui, hop aboard the Redline Raft, a much more intimate way to experience the ocean, which jets you around to many of the island’s most beautiful spots, including the front side and less-visited backside of Molokini Crater, La Perouse Bay, where you’ll get the opportunity to see the famous Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins up close while brushing up on your geology knowledge, and finally Turtle Town , where you’ll snorkel with protected Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles. Includes breakfast, deli lunch, shortie wetsuit, and all snorkel gear. Underwater camera rental available. Great staff and a fun adventure!

check-in: Kihei Boat Ramp - Call: (808) 698-5837

Pac Whale Boat

Pacific Whale Foundation

pac whale boat

A double-decker luxury adventure catamaran is the ideal vessel for cruising to Molokini Crater for an epic Maui snorkel cruise alongside friends and family. During winter months, this tour can turn into a whale-watching experience as well. Enjoy the views from the shaded interior cabin, or head to the top deck for fresh air, sunshine, and an excellent viewpoint for spotting Maui’s plentiful marine life. With onboard Marine Naturalists, guests will enjoy a memorable snorkeling experience (and possible whale watch) at both Molokini Crater and a second location at the captain’s discretion. All tours include premium snorkeling equipment and instruction, flotation devices, continental breakfast, a BBQ lunch, and unlimited non-alcoholic beverages. Excellent value and service!

check-in: Maalaea Harbor Shops at Pac Whale Store - Daily Trips

Malolo Boat

Malolo, 55-foot catamaran, is an excellent budget option for Maui travelers who are interested in seeing the beauty of Maui’s unique marine life. The Sunday morning Malolo snorkeling tour to Molokini Crater includes all snorkeling equipment, snorkeling instruction, breakfast, lunch, and beverages throughout the day. This is definitely one of the best prices you’ll find for trips to the crater, where visibility often exceeds 150 feet, so hop aboard and experience it for yourself.

check-in: Maalaea Harbor Slip 87 - Call: (808) 270-0885

Trilogy boat

Trilogy operates 2 catamarans to Molokini: a 64′ Custom SeaRunner/Cutter Rigged Sailing Catamaran and a 55′ Searunner/Sloop Rigged Catamaran. Both vessels average around 20 or so fewer passengers each trip than they are licensed for. That means you have far more room to leisurely roam around these large vessels. Some of our personal favorite characteristics of the Trilogy trips include their legendary fresh-baked cinnamon rolls, fresh fruit, and Kona coffee breakfast. They also have 2 snorkel sites, so you can always avoid the more crowded spots. Lahaina snorkeling tours are available if you want to check out other sites around Maui. Their lunch is great and the crew is a lot of fun! If you have a large group, book a private charter.

Maalaea Harbor slips 62 and 99 - Call: (888) 225-maui

Four Winds boat

Four Winds II

This deluxe 55′ sailing catamaran was designed and built for one main purpose: Sailing to Molokini Crater and giving visitors the best trip possible. Maui Classic Charters has succeeded in this by developing a high-quality, stable catamaran with fantastic features such as a large glass bottom viewing room. They’re equipped with twin grills to make delicious food, and the wet bar is prepped and ready for your ride back. Four Winds II has a shaded upper deck as well as a comfortable cabin for before and after your Molokini snorkeling, snuba diving, or scuba diving experience. Private boat charters are available.

Our Experience

Every time we board the Kai Kanani II, we meet group after group who go with Kai Kanani every time they visit Maui. I love the beach loading, Erica loves the exclusivity of Molokini Crater thanks to Kai Kanani’s South Maui location, and Henry loves their food. Our toddler doesn’t care that it is locally sourced, but we do. Beach-loading off of Maluaka Beach in Makena, Kai Kanani II is a 5-10 minute ride from the Wailea resorts. With this mid-morning snorkel, you will enjoy the deep blue ocean while the sun is high. Kai Kanani is proud to call South Maui home and you won’t forget the experience they provide!

Molokini Sunrise Tour

You’re up and at ’em early for this sunrise snorkel trip on the Kai Kanani. But the early bird certainly gets the best experience here — you’ll get to see Molokini before any other tour boat. Molokini Crater is a partially submerged volcanic crater that is a marine sanctuary and a popular snorkeling spot, accessible only by boat. You’ll also visit Turtle Town on the tour, conditions permitting.

The trip lasts 3.5 hours, which means you’ll be back to shore by 9:45, leaving you the rest of the day to explore or relax by the pool. Kai Kanani offers free transportation to the boat from select hotels.

Have Molokini to Yourself

Due to their South Maui location, loading at  Maluaka Beach in Makena , Kai Kanani is the first snorkel boat into Molokini in the morning, enjoying 45 minutes of pristine solitude in the clearest water in Hawaii, with up to 200 feet of visibility. Then you’ll head back to Maui and snorkel with the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle at the world-famous Turtle Town.

Duration: 3.5 Hours

Check-in at 6 AM and departure at 6:45 AM. The trip lasts 3.5 hours, which means you’ll be back to shore by 9:45, leaving you the rest of the day to explore or relax by the pool.

Molokini Mid-Morning Tour

If rising early is not in the cards for you or your group, you’re still taken care of with their mid-morning tour, departing at 9:45am.

Leisurely Dining

Enjoy a bountiful spread of locally-sourced food throughout the day, finishing with a gourmet lunch. After snorkeling, enjoy an open bar with Kona beers on tap and local spirits. Take in the stunning views of Makena, Haleakala, and South Maui on a leisurely cruise to finish up the tour.

Molikini Crater + Turtle Town

The Signature Deluxe Snorkel is their most popular tour, with two snorkeling locations, placed in the heart of the day when the Maui sun lights up the colors of the fish and coral below and you can take in the full spectrum of the beauty of Molokini’s incredible reef. Then snorkel along the Makena Coast to swim with the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle.

  • For groups of 6 to 9 , notification of cancellation must be received at least 7 days prior to the scheduled tour time.
  • For groups of 10 or more , notification of cancellation must be received at least 14 days prior to the scheduled tour time.

Does Kai Kanani provide transport from my resort?

Kai Kanani offers a Mercedes shuttle service from select Wailea Resorts to and from their launching point at Maluaka Beach. Space is limited, so  contact Kai Kanani  to reserve your space.

Can I bring a good camera?

Absolutely! Bring a GoPro or another suitable water camera to get underwater shots. You can also bring your fancy camera but there may be light spray so make sure you can keep it dry.

Kai Kanani also welcomes you to bring your phone, camera, electronic keys, etc. but first, make sure they are not in your pockets during boat loading.  They highly recommend you bring a waterproof bag to put these items in. If you do not have one, don’t worry, they are happy to provide you with a small plastic bag before the tour begins.  If you have a waterproof camera – even better.  Be sure to hold those bags nice and high as you are walking through the water.

What should I expect with beach loading?

Beach loading has its challenges: it takes experienced captains and crew to ensure the tour is fun and safe. Kai Kanani has been at it for more than 30 years and has the most experienced beach-loading crew on the island, with each one specially trained to deal with the specific conditions that occur at pristine Maluaka Beach.

  • The crew will have you form two lines for their two boarding steps.
  • The crew will point out any potential hazards, such as the white cross beam that taller passengers will need to duck under
  • The crew is there to assist you with bags, children, and adults who need a hand.
  • You’ll hear the crew giving instructions. Please listen to them! They might see something you don’t. If they say, “Stop!” it’s for a good cause.
  • If you need any assistance, ask! That’s what they do best.

While going up and down the ladder, most people are so excited looking down at the water that they forget to look up.  As you’re boarding the ladder, grab onto those metal handrails with both hands and make sure to avoid the cross beam above you.

What is the Health and Safety policy?

Your health is their top priority and Kai Kanani have put special measures in place to keep all guests safe both during and after your activity.

  • Stringent Cleaning – They’ve increased the frequency of disinfecting surfaces and high traffic areas between each tour, and hand sanitizer will be available to all of their guests.
  • Social Distancing – Guests will stay at a safe 6-foot distance during all points of the tour. They also ensure that all staff members will be wearing the necessary PPE.
  • Wellness Checks – Employees receive daily wellness checks to ensure they are healthy and symptom-free. If you or anyone in your group is experiencing symptoms, they will work directly with you to cancel or reschedule your tour.

What do I need to wear?

They recommend swimwear on all of their trips, including the Adventure Sunset Sail. Clothes that can be worn over swimwear are great but you’ll want to take those off when you board and disembark the vessel. Once onboard, feel free to put clothes over your swimwear.

Footwear:  You will be asked to walk barefoot across the sand before boarding to ensure that a sneaky wave won’t take your shoes off or they don’t inhibit your progress as you step onto Kai Kanani II. Once onboard, feel free to wear your footwear.

Towels:  They ask that you bring your own towels to snorkel tours. They provide towels on the Adventure Sunset Sail. Those towels stay with them so it’s good to keep a towel in your car or an extra in your bag for when you disembark.

Are there shaded areas on the boat?

Yes, there is a large shaded area with benches and tables in the hull.

Will I get seasick?

The Kai Kanani II is a performance catamaran so it causes less seasickness than other types of boats. However, as a precaution, motion sickness medicine should be taken the night before the tour to solve all worries.

Kai Kanani is a Native Hawaiian family-owned company that has been in operation for more than 30 years. They operate their catamaran tours out of South Maui, and you can hop aboard for a snorkel trip, sunset sail, or whale-watching adventure. Kai Kanani supports local farmers and small businesses by shopping locally for the meals and drinks they serve onboard. Their attention to detail, fun and knowledgeable crew, and excellent customer experience have earned them more than 1,300 five-star reviews on TripAdvisor.
