The shaved pig head salad from Liholiho Yacht Club will overwhelm you with awe. You know, the kind inspired by a top-down, golden hour drive over the Golden Gate Bridge. Frisée and Asian pears, tossed in a zingy fish sauce vinaigrette, surround glossy slices of pig head like an edible halo. And the meat melts the second it hits your tongue. The salad is a spot-on indicator of what this Lower Nob Hill spot does best: completely original dishes that are in their own class.

A lot has changed in Liholiho Yacht Club’s world since their two-year hiatus starting in 2020. The restaurant underwent an interior refresh. And the team opened Good Good Culture Club , the lively sister spot in the Mission and one of the most fun places to eat in the city. What hasn’t changed is that Liholiho is a bucket-list restaurant for milestone life moments you’ll be telling stories about for the next ten years.

Liholiho Yacht Club image

The menu is described as “heritage driven,” and here that translates to salads, snacks, and meats and seafood influenced mostly by South and East Asian cuisines. Liholiho is doing its own thing, combining every flavor under the sun to turn out dishes that feel new. And the impressive presentation makes them almost too pretty to eat.

Just look to the rendang curry that arrives with an entire turmeric butter naan baked over the top. It’s one of six rotating entrées, and one to get on your table. Stab the bread’s shell to release the fragrant steam like it’s a pore-opening facial. The swordfish katsu is the other standout. It’s decorated with a Russian dressing drizzle, radishes, and gherkins, and stays crisp atop light caper butter. Smaller plates are as deserving of the spotlight. Beef tongue and miso aioli between soft steamed buns are saucy and umami-packed, gulf shrimp are leveled up with sweet longanisa stuffing, and the previously mentioned pig head salad is, quite simply, a masterpiece.

Liholiho Yacht Club image

While the food is the main event, the space is where you want to be on nights that call for multiple rounds of wine, and pandan or li hing mui-infused cocktails. The open kitchen, smack dab in the middle of the airy, brick-lined dining room, is a hub of constant movement. Staff add the finishing touches on some katsu, light sparklers on top of a baked Hawaii, and move around so fast they blur. Get to this buzzy place for any celebration you can think of, including to experience a dinner that's unlike anything else in SF.

Food Rundown

Liholiho Yacht Club image

Shaved Pig Head

Raise a glass to this phenomenal salad, which will make all other salads you eat after seem sad. You’ll also want this fish sauce dressing on everything.

Liholiho Yacht Club image

Rendang Curry

Turmeric butter naan is baked directly on top of the bowl, and you’re instructed to either lift it right off or break the middle with a spoon and let a few pieces of bread soak up the nutty curry. Do the latter. The curry has deep flavor and a mild kick, and the lamb falls apart even if you just poke it with a fork. We only wish the curry came with more meat, and a side of rice because the naan will run out.

Liholiho Yacht Club image

Swordfish Katsu

The sound of someone cutting into the crust on this katsu would probably rack up thousands of views on ASMR YouTube. Bright pickled onions and caper butter make this one of the lighter entrées on the menu.

Liholiho Yacht Club image

Grassfed Ribeye

This ribeye is perfectly charred, and topped with slightly sweet carrots that'll rewire the part of your brain that stores the carrot facts. The black sesame and nose-clearing hot mustard dipping sauce that comes on the side cuts through the meat’s richness nicely.

Liholiho Yacht Club image

An excellent rendition of tuna poke. Will it change your life? Not necessarily. But if you’re down to spend $11 on a few bites of fish, Liholiho is a great place to do so.

Liholiho Yacht Club image

Poppyseed Steam Bun

Like the poke, this poppyseed steam bun is a trademark Liholiho dish that regulars will recognize from the early days. Dripping out of the pillowy bun are juices from the beef tongue, kimchi, and miso aioli. It’s one per order, so plan accordingly.

Liholiho Yacht Club image

Baked Hawaii

Save room for this. Torched meringue is swirled around a mound of coconut POG sorbet and fluffy orange chiffon cake. It’s tart, sweet, and exactly what you should eat on every future birthday.

Liholiho Yacht Club

Ratings and reviews, location and contact, michelin guide's point of view.

My wife and I visited Liholiho after a LONG workday. I was pleased to find an available reservation without booking a week or more in advance. We arrived early and our table was ready. The staff was pleasant, attentive, but not intrusive. We shared one... appetizer, one entre, and one dessert. Everything was superb. Do NOT MISS the Backed Hawaii. It was even better than the Swordfish, which I highly recommend. The bill was a tad more than we would have liked ($90+), but we were very pleased with the overall experience. Give 'em a try. Also, if you plan to stroll there look at the topography. The restaurant is definitely UPHILL from mission street, Union square, Yerba Buena, and the Embarcadero. Walking through many places in SF is kind of dicey these days. So a quick uber/lyft/ or taxi is probably best. We got a ride for ~$10 each way. More

We visited last night. Liholiho has a fabulous vibe & everyone was just lovely. The food is out of this world. Just vibrant & interesting & novel & utterly delicious. We had two fish dishes to share - the cod & the swordfish & both... were so fresh & the accompanying elements made each dish unique. We didn’t order appetisers as we wanted to leave room for dessert but we shared the chips & kimchi dip which again were just delicious and unique. Desserts were sublime & beautifully presented. Would highly recommend booking a table here for whenever you can - they were rightly busy all night. Special shout out to Alejandro who looked after us so wonderfully and made the whole experience even better. We will definitely be back next time we visit S.F. More

I liked this place! it is worth the hype in my opinion. The vibe in liholiho is great, music is on point. servers and bartenders are friendly and approachable. The castaway is def a hit, I usually don't like sherry, but this one is super... good. With smooth and creamy and not being too sweet, We ordered the lobster as appetizers. Actually this can be an entree given the portion! It is damn delicious, love their source with black beans. Though being a meat lover, I tried the whole fish tail and didn't regret a bit! It is huge in portion, and full in flavor. We didnt get the spam which every one is raving for, probably next time! Minus one star is dessert is actually not that impressive, baked alaska is good in presentation, but just around average in taste. Also, the bathroom is not clean enough.. We will be back next week going to try more items such as shortribs or wagyu steak! More

The game hen was not properly cooked, I should have sent it back, parts of it were still raw. Yeck! No wonder my stomach was in such a state last night. Otherwise, the swordfish main was great. But will all the mains, they are made... for two! I would go for the appies, then share one main if you have a partner. But avoid the game hen. And yes, my bad for not saying anything. And no, there is no view of the water from this very "modern" eatery. More

I was put off even before we went to the restaurant because of the impossibility of making a reservation. There were no spots earlier than 10pm available for about a month, which was the whole period that it was possible to make a reservation for.... I thought it must be a mistake so I called the restaurant. I was given a vague explanation and felt I was being given the runaround, so decided to look at the Yelp reviews and learned that if one gets there before the restaurant opens at 5pm there's a good chance of getting a walk-in table. We did this but were not able to get a table because there were about 8 people ahead of us, and were told there was a 2-3 hour wait. We opted to wait in the downstairs room because the seats were more comfortable than the high stools at the bar. We tried a couple of appetizers and had drinks. I did think that the food must be good since it seemed so popular, but it was only average. The beef tartare was not that flavorful and the crackers that went with it were stale. The tuna poke was like the poke you get from the supermarket in Hawaii. My partner was given about 1/4 inch of wine. They heard our sarcastic comments about it and gave him more wine for his second drink. We went back up to the bar when we found out we couldn't get the full menu downstairs and ordered a couple more appetizers. I was not impressed with anything I ate there. What annoyed me the most was that the whole time we sat at the bar, most of the tables were empty. Why all the fuss about giving us a table? Are they trying to seem trendy and important? We went home and I never did get a call from the restaurant to say they had a table for us. The whole experience was really ridiculous. In addition, we spend part of the year living in Maui, and this food did not even resemble Hawaiian food. More

A friend recommended this place, and I made a reservation literally the earliest date that I was allowed to (can only reserve 30 days in advance) and the earliest time available was 9:45. But it was worth it; every dish we ordered (family style) from... the yellowtail appetizer to the short ribs with bone marrow were all amazing. Felt it was definitely worth the late time slot (it was definitely busy until around 11:30 and was a Wednesday night) More

I was looking forward to dining at Liho-Liho for a long time due to its popularity. We finally booked a table and while the food was really good, it wasn’t amazing in my opinion. Also service wasn’t great. I feel like the waiters were not... very friendly and didn’t give us much attention. For some reason, also, I got VERY sick when I got home. So it just made my whole experience worse. More

An impossible place to get into, Liholiho offers a little Hawaiian flare on the side streets of San Fran. The service was really laid back but attentive. It's a higher priced restaurant but the service didn't nor the ambience made me feel like it was... the typical high priced restaurant. My quick down and dirty feedback is: - Popcorn - app that was good and nicely seasoned - Soft Shell Crap - with soy, ginger and pineapple - recommended - Brokaw Avocado - fried green beans and avocado - good - Kimchi Fried Rice - best thing on the menu! - Opah - a fish that seems alot like tuna. I'd never had it before but it seemed well cooked and very meaty. Overall, the food was highly salted (miso/ teriyaki seasoning). The service was the best thing, oh the desert was just as good. More

Very nice location, very interesting food experience (we tried the roasted octopus and the kinchi fried rice), great and impressive dinner!

Great vibe, great energy, amazing food and service that can't be beat. I've been trying to get into Liholiho for years when I'm in town for a quick visit and the wait was worth it, but I'll be pissed the next time I can't get... in. More

What a pleasant surprise. The food was great. And I loved the dessert. The atmosphere was fun. The staff were all friendly and helpful.

Excellent food all meant for sharing with wide variety of Asian themed cuisine. New and hip restaurant which is still casual. Make reservations early as they are hard to obtain. Service is good, not great.

After flying in from NY, I was keen for something tasty and fresh, found this place on TA and wanted to check it out. Unpretentious, welcoming, the food was bang on and the cocktails wash down perfectly. This is a great place.

liholiho yacht club yelp

Can't rate the food since we never got a chance to eat anything. We went in, we told that we could eat at the bar since all tables were full. However, they seriously don't know how to handle that kinda simple situation (which almost every... restaurant I have seen does better) and it is a total chaos on who sits where and when (we didn't want to start a yelling competition with another group). The waitress didn't seem to care (maybe because we were only two paying customers against 5, who knows?). We decided to leave with a very bad experiencd from the place which almost ruined our evening. Don't go, if you have not reserved a table. More

1) This is what I'd call a 'funky' Asian/Hawaiian fusion place in a sketchy part of SF. (When we went there, we witnessed the police arresting a drug dealer right on the corner. It was like watching a live cop show.) That's not to say... this is an 'unsafe' area, just keep your eyes open. It's in a section of town called TenderNob (a juncture of NobHill (very posh section of town) and the Tenderloin -- not so nice area of town. 2) First, the name-- the restaurant doesn't have anything to do with a Yacht club and other than a Hawaiian influence in the food-- you'll not feel like it's Hawaiian either. So it's great name, but not that descriptive. Is a totally 'chill' restaurant with a funky sound track to boot. So if you're looking for hoity-toity dress up place this isn't the place for you. People here were ultra casual. 3) The head chef grew up in Hawaii on Oahu and is of Hawaiian - Chinese- Indian heritage - Ravi Kapur is 38 and cooks what he likes to prepare for his family. He's into what's called “The Aloha Spirit , the way people are treated, that’s the most important thing in my restaurant,” is what he says. 4) OK..the FOOD.... Most people on this forum said to order the popcorn -- I think you can skip the popcorn, it's not that interesting. It's buttery and spicy, no big whoop, you can skip it. (see Picture). It isn't bad, but you don't need it. 5) The Poke tuna is to DIE FOR. (See Pic), it's on top of a homemade cracker, highly recommended, comes in a serving size of 2. Good Appetizer. 6) We also ordered the Little Gems salad - it has shaved Corn, fava beans, a very tasty dressing on it, tasted great, easily shareable (See Pic). 7) The Tuna Belly - is a nice portion size and is spiced excellently -- the chef has a way of combining the sweet and the sour and the spicy and the hot together magnificently. Highly recommend this dish. 8) The octopus salad is another winner - (see pic) - Grilled Octopus pieces along with spicy potatoes and greens. Highly recommend. 9) The Opah (sp?) fish this was our biggest course - it tasted exquisite. Hard to describe how it tasted, it's a white fleshy fish and like everything else has unique flavors (see pic).\ 9a) Dessert is not to be missed - see pictures - we ordered the pistachio dessert and the Hawaiian one - I thought both were great, the Pistachio one was better - it had a meringue-like enclosure for the nuts with a amaretto/cherry flavor... I am still thinking about it.. 10) Net/Net be cautious in this part of town, the is a casual place with rocking' music that plays, there is an 'open' kitchen so you can see the chef in action. The place is packed, so make sure you have reservations and if you don't you can hover until people leave with your best chance of getting a table either super early or late. One last thing - service is a 15 out of 10 -- each server knew everything about all dishes. And....don't forget the cocktails - we got the Skipper and it was to die for. More

Liholiho Yacht Club Opens Anew in San Francisco

Lower Nob Hill

Before you go to a restaurant, what do you want — or need — to know most? In our series,  The Rundown , we’re sharing all the essentials about newly opened (as well as some of your favorite) restaurants.

Today, we’re looking at the much beloved Liholiho Yacht Club on Sutter Street in Nob Hill. The restaurant has been closed to dining since the start of the pandemic, but after almost three long years, the space in now reopened. And though Liholiho will be familiar to its legions of regulars and its tagline remains the same — “a restaurant celebrating heritage through food in a lively atmosphere” — the return after three long years means it is, in many ways, very much a new restaurant. Here are five things to know before you go.

liholiho yacht club yelp

1. The Values

Following in the forward-thinking footsteps of sister restaurant Good Good Culture Club , Liholiho is transparent about its workplace culture and the ways in which it is trying to build a better restaurant industry. Read the entire statement here , and take note of the emphases on equitable pay, growth, care, and empowerment. For these reasons, among others, there is an equitable compensation fee on all checks of 20%; read more about that here .

liholiho yacht club yelp

2. The Space

The space has been refreshed and remodeled in nuanced ways. If you’ve been to the restaurant once, you might not notice, but if you’ve been a regular over the years, you’ll definitely see and feel the changes. There are new light fixtures and more bar seating up front; the booths are now lined with comfy, burgundy cushions, and the walls are painted with a wave-like pattern by Oakland-based artist Kalani Ware . The glass partition in the back has been knocked down, and the large espresso machine that used to sit at the bar counter has been removed, effectively increasing the feeling of spaciousness inside the restaurant.

liholiho yacht club yelp

3. The Food

You’re of course at Liholiho Yacht Club for the unique and singular fare inspired by heritage. Some of the restaurant’s classics make a return, albeit slightly refreshed: The tuna poke on nori chips are a different shape. The fluffy, poppyseed-studded buns are now filled with housemade spam instead of beef tongue. And the duck liver mousse is now served on wonderful banana bread.

But there are also new items on the menu that are sure to be instant hits, like the spicy, thinly shaved pig head salad and the swordfish katsu with Russian dressing and a caper butter sauce that evokes Filet-o-Fish vibes in the best way possible.

liholiho yacht club yelp

4. The Drinks

Sean Kelley started at Liholiho Yacht Club back in 2015; he’s now beverage director, creating vibrant, citrus-forward cocktails like the Fholston Paradise, which has agricole rum, coconut liquor, just enough absinthe so that you barely notice the subtle licorice layer, and bright lime to balance it all. There is also beer, wine, sake, and non-alcoholic cocktails as well.

Fans of the downstairs bar, Louie’s Gen-Gen Room, will have to be patient; the space isn’t ready to debut just yet, but the team is hoping to have it open by the beginning of 2023, if not sooner.

5. The Reservations

So you want to make a reservation at Liholiho Yacht Club? Smart move. Know that reservations open exactly two weeks out at exactly 10 p.m.; as usual, your odds are better if you’re looking at non-primetime hours, and weekdays. If nothing’s available, do set that Notify. It’s a wonderful thing. And of course, the crew does save some walk-in spots every night.

Calling this a Hawaiian restaurant would be like calling Lady Gaga a “talented singer.” True—and yet not really the whole story. Because while Oahu native Ravi Kapur’s spins on tuna poke and pork belly are delicious riffs on the 50th state’s signatures, what really sets Liholiho apart is the chef’s ability to pull from NorCal, Japanese, Indian, and Korean playbooks. These influences are mashed together into dishes that feel both excitingly new and so spot-on it’s like they were, well, born this way. Think festive, shareable dishes like lettuce cups of fried oyster and beef carpaccio, beef tongue–filled poppy-seed steam buns, and humongous mains like beef ribs in kimchi-chili sauce or fried cornish game hen with flowering kale. The minimalist light fixtures and blonde-wood booths give off California cool. No wonder Kapur’s mom, whose face beams from behind the bar in a giant black-and-white photograph, sports such a big smile.

What to order: tuna poke with nori crackers, beef ribs with kimchi-chili sauce, Baked Hawaiian (caramelized vanilla ice cream with toasted chiffon cake)

We love: the off-menu house-made Spam, served over rice with furikake

Reservations

We truly are a family-owned restaurant. Every aspect of this business is carefully crafted with love, and every decision is made with intention and reason.

To book for 1-7 guests reserve

Do not reserve if you can not honor your chosen time.

8-9 guests book our Ohana Table  here ! 10-20 guests book Gen-Gen Room here!

Info: Reservations open exactly 1 month prior at 10 pm. Confused? Visit Resy to see the next date that is opening. If a reservation is not available choose "notify" via Resy, this online waitlist is effective.

5 pm   reservations : We can't edit your time after the fact. A new time would require a new online reservation. Many guests who book outside primetime ask to change their reservation time. It's not possible.

8:45/9 pm reservations: Honor your chosen time, refrain from arriving at prime time. By doing this you are blocking reservations from other guests. This results in empty seats during a time that is tougher to book. Walk-in seating and reservations are managed separately.

Tips:  95% of guests want a 6-8 pm reservation. If possible, book outside prime time. If you are booking a Friday or Saturday, be sure to book at 10 pm one month prior. If the reservation you seek is unavailable, add yourself to "notify" immediately using the most flexible window of time. "Notify" guests are contacted via Resy in the order received.
