HOW TO ATTEND THE RÉGATES ROYALES IN CANNES?

From the land or sea – whatever your point of view.

The first suggestion, which will cost you nothing, is to admire the boats on the Old Port in Cannes, sitting on the Midi beach and watching them go out to sea. The atmosphere on the quayside is extraordinary: between waiting for the signals, the race starting and boats returning, there is always something happening.

Another option – some companies organize sea trips during the regattas, for example Trans Côte d’Azur .

Watch the races as they happen for a reasonable price ranging from €30 to €46.

Visit the village des régates.

Activities and many events, especially in the evenings, move to the land at the Royal Regatta Village in Cannes on Quai Laubeuf. The Régates Royales: Cannes’ Most Prestigious Sailing Regatta

Written By: Karen Hockney

When it comes to regattas, they don’t get much more prestigious or highly regarded than the Régates Royales.

Regates Royales 4

Established in 1929 to honour King Christian X of Denmark and his 6 MJI yacht Dana, this week-long series of races attracts the world’s best yachtsmen and women to compete at IGY’s Vieux-Port de Cannes in the south of France.

Taking place this year from 24-30 September, it features the European Championship of the 12 MJI - the legendary yachts which competed in the America’s Cup between 1958 and 1987.

A true highlight of the annual classic sailing calendar, the Régates Royales attracts every level from experienced racers to regular, passionate sailors who all share the dream of competing in this incredible event.

A chequered history

To understand its popularity, you need to look back at its rich and chequered history. Kicking off at the end of the roaring 1920s, the Régates Royales enjoyed a golden age for a decade, with the Danish king winning two races and coming second in another before the event sank into oblivion, becoming largely forgotten in the 1960s.

Cannes’ nautical director Jean-Pierre Odéro resurrected the regatta in 1978, with 6 and 8 MJI racing again, continuing the closely forged bond between the city of Cannes and yachting.

Regates Royales 6

In 1994, classic yachts finally entered the arena and the preservation of the passion and heritage of classical yacht craft became a fundamental part of the event’s raison d’être. Jean-Pierre Odéro remained a guiding force of the Régates Royale until his death in 2003.

A world-class sailing event

Today, as the 45 th edition, which is partnered by the Carlton Hotel in Cannes, approaches, it’s clear that enthusiasm for this iconic sailing tradition continues unabated, with more than 150 of the world’s most famous classic yachts expected to attend.

“Régates Royales is a fantastic event on the water and probably the biggest classic yacht regatta in the world,” says Thomas Bunodière, Marine Operations Director at IGY’s Vieux-Port of Cannes, who is helping to coordinate the regatta.

“This event is one of the rare opportunities where traditional yachts, pieces of history, race together. Crossing each other on the water are yachts designed by William Fife and previous legends of America’s Cup. It’s a real part of sailing history.”

Cannes: a yacht hub par excellence

The annual event gives an additional buzz to the already dynamic port where Thomas oversees yachting and leisure operations, and which has become a welcoming hub for cruise passengers, local fishermen, boaters and industry professionals.  Early autumn is the optimal period weather-wise for a regatta on the Côte d’Azur, according to Thomas.

“ The atmosphere on the dock is special with all the sailors interacting with great conviviality. I sail regularly in the bay of Cannes and have also had the chance to sail during previous Régates Royales.

Regates Royales 5

“This bay offers some fantastic sailing conditions in September with warm water and various wind conditions. You can have light winds, summer breezes, strong westerly winds called ‘mistral’ or south-easterly conditions generated by a low on the Genoa Gulf. All these wind conditions combined with the landscape of the Estérel mountain range are the perfect cocktail for tactical games on the water.

“When you participate in a regatta, it’s always great to have the same event-identity year to year and Cannes’ Régates Royales has its own identity and atmosphere which is beloved by sailors.   It’s an historical event and an unmissable date on the city calendar of Cannes. It’s also a key regatta at the end of the sailing season.”

Art, cocktails and talent

This year’s official street art inspired poster has been designed by French artist and filmmaker Thierry Guetta, also known as Mr Brainwash. “One of the highlights of the Régates Royales is to combine art and culture with sailing,” says Jean François Cutugno, President of the Yacht Club de Cannes. “It’s in the DNA of the event and the town. We like to ask a great artist to design the official poster and it’s a great honour to have Mr Brainwash this year.

“The 45 th Régates Royales is shaping up to be a great event, with an exceptional line-up. But I’m not forgetting that the Yacht Club continues to train future champions while supporting young crews of the highest calibre, such as Matisse Pacaud and Lucie de Gennes, world youth champions from Cannes who have just won the European Championship in Poland.”

Regates Royales 3

A celebratory Régates Royales Special cocktail has been created by the Carlton Hotel, comprising curaçao, gin, lemon juice and lavender syrup, with General Manager Carlo Stragiotto expressing his joy at being part of the historic proceedings. “We are delighted to be joining forces with the Yacht Club de Cannes, further reinforcing Cannes’ status as a must-see destination for yachting enthusiasts,” he says.

This year’s event looks set to be one of the most eagerly anticipated and successful yet, with Thomas adding: “The Cannes Régates Royales 2023 edition seems to already be one of the most popular editions. It will for sure have more than 100 yachts up to 55m, including a 12 MJI European Championship which will be a peak event within the regatta. These sailing boats are just legends on the water!

“I’m not sure I will be able to race this year but I would love to join a day race. A day on the water is always a great day. ”

With around 1,000 sailors representing 10 nationalities taking part and approximately 5,000 visitors a day on site in Cannes during regatta week, Jean Francois Cutugno is keen to emphasise the most impressive and memorable aspect of the Régates Royales.

“It’s the history and the fact that it is a real competition unanimously appreciated by the competitors,” he says. “Our competitors don’t offer courses and organization of the same quality; they’re more focused on ‘show’.”

Organized by the yacht club de cannes from september 19 to 25, the 43rd régates royales continue. even today, for this fourth day of racing, the wind was in a very good mood again, with a perfect east-south-east breeze in the morning which decided to abate a bit throughout the day..

Karine Grené – (September 23, 2021) German Frers, always has that mischievous smile behind his sunglasses and wide eyebrows. Considered one of the greatest naval architects of the past sixty years, he designed his first sailboat at 17, continuing the work of his father German Frers senior. German “junior” was only one year old when, during a gale during the Mar del Plata Buenos-Aires race, Recluta ran aground on the beach. For lack of rescue resources, the boat was partially destroyed, and the crew just manages to save the rigging and part of the fittings. Friend of German Frers Senior, the owner asked him to redesign Recluta, a twenty-meter ketch, but due to the shortage of materials during WWII, it would never be built.

A few decades later, his son German Frers Junior, who in the line of his father and with his son Mani, not only pursued the “Frers” dynasty, but designed more than 1,000 sailboats, whether for Bénéteau, Hallberg-Rassy , Nautor Swan… as well as all the great racing monohulls that have shone in races around the world, Admiral’s Cup, America’s Cup. German Frers then decided three years ago to take over his father’s plans, then to (re) build Recluta. He hired young carpenters supervised by an 84-year-old foreman, considered a shipbuilding cabinetmaker. His daughter Zelmira, artist and photographer follows the site and has just published a book on this saga. This year, the superb Recluta is present in Cannes at the Régates Royales with a young Argentinian crew obviously led by German Frers. And if we find a majority of Fife, Herreshoff or Nicholson plans around the basin, the great Argentinian naval architect, is also the author of the Smeralda 888 monotypes, racy regatta monohulls of 8.88 meters, built in Italy and launched in particular by the Yacht Club de Monaco. Coincidentally, tomorrow, Friday, September 24, will be the start of the Gold Cup of the series, the Smeralda competing for the first time in the Régates Royales.Based at the Yacht Club de Cannes, they are led by seasoned crews, all with world titles – François Brénac, formerly of the 470 French team and recent 6 MJI European champion, Stéphane Christidis, former of the France of 470 then of 49er and trainer of Jean-Baptiste Bernaz in Laser… – but must be helmed by non-professionals, nevertheless amateurs more than informed like Jean-François Cutugno, president of the Yacht Club of Cannes, at the head of the organization of these 43nevertheless amateurs more than informed like Jean-François Cutugno, president of the Yacht Club of Cannes, at the head of the organization of these 43nevertheless amateurs more than informed like Jean-François Cutugno, president of the Yacht Club of Cannes, at the head of the organization of these 43ème Régates Royales, and renowned regatta sailor for decades.

This Thursday, in a dream breeze, the 120 competitors were once again treated to an exceptional day in both harbors. On the eve of their final Dragon races, Géry Trentesaux (Bande à part) took control of the event thanks to two almost perfect heats, when in 5.5 MJI, Finn’s Olympic champion, the Polish Mateuz Kuskinierewicz ( Aspire) consolidated its first place in the general classification.

By Karen Hockney ONBOARD ONLINE 9 Aug 2023

When it comes to regattas, they don’t get much more prestigious or highly regarded than the Régates Royales.

classic yacht regatta cannes

Taking place this year from 24-30 September, it features the European Championship of the 12 MJI – the legendary yachts which competed in the America’s Cup between 1958 and 1987.

“The atmosphere on the dock is special with all the sailors interacting with great conviviality. I sail regularly in the bay of Cannes and have also had the chance to sail during previous Régates Royales.

A day on the water is always a great day.”

In the mild autumn climate of Cannes, the world’s most beautiful traditional yachts gather at  the Royal Regatta , in the Bay of Cannes. Whether you are an interested observer or a keen yachtsman (or woman), the sheer spectacle and atmosphere along the quays are quite exceptional, especially at the start of the races! Traditional sailboats, classic yachts, Tofinou, 5.5 Metre, Star, and Dragon classes are all on the programme from 18 to 24 September in the Vieux Port. The authenticity of the event is built around the incredible ‘lords of the sea’ as most of the yachts are over a hundred years old.

The aesthetic appearance of these historic yachts, which sail under the power of the wind and the elbow grease of several dozen crew, give this race a unique charm. If you want to see the spectacle close-up, some boat companies even offer boat trips to follow the yachts in the bay! On Quai Laubeuf, there are many activities and events to enjoy throughout the day and evening in the Royal Regatta Village in  Cannes : crew parades, tugs-of-war, concerts, and festive entertainment… In Cannes, we party on land and at sea!

Finnish Mystery Thriller ‘Icebreaker’ Wins MipDrama, the Industry Centerpiece at Cannes’ TV Market MipTV

Icebreaker

The votes are in: Atmospheric (and claustrophobic) Finnish mystery thriller “ Icebreaker ,” already one of the most buzzed of projects hitting the competition, has been crowned the winner of the 8th edition of MipDrama , receiving its Coup de Coeur award.

Sold by About Premium Content, created by Mia Ylönen, who exec produces with Aleksi Bardy, the Elisa Viihde -commissioned show “Icebreaker” is set on a stranded boat.

As its crew members start to disappear, one by one, coastguard Sanna Tanner (Jessica Grabowsky) is trying to find answers – but what she is dealing with goes way beyond rational explanations.

“There are no ghosts and no zombies, but we wanted to bring in this mythological element and give it a new spice in terms of creating a thriller in the Nordics. We don’t want to go: ‘There is snow, there is darkness, there are people in trouble again.’ We don’t want to go the usual route. We want to add something extra.”

The show, it was revealed, is planned to span over the course of several seasons.

Ylönen, who accepted the award in person, added: “I think the combination of a unique location – a contained, claustrophobic icebreaker – mixed with an eerie sense of dread in the otherwise beautiful frozen landscape is the key pull in our series. And it never hurts to have a complex and nuanced female character leading the show!”

Nine other titles were spotlighted during the showcase, hosted by journalist Olivia Kinghorst.

“They have not been previously presented at any other event or festival. Until now,” said MipTV director Lucy Smith, underlining that this year’s selection spanned 12 different languages.

Belén Rueda and Hiba Abouk, both dressed to kill, star in this Atresmedia TV production, made in collaboration with Good Mood, headed by legendary showrunner Daniel Ecija.

“Miss Austen” also promises delightful female characters, taking on the iconic writer that needs no further introduction. Starting right after her death, however, when her sister Casandra tries her best to protect her reputation – mostly by desperately looking for the potentially scandalous letters her famous sister left behind.

Produced by A Bonnie Productions and Masterpiece, in association with the BBC and Federation Stories, it’s based on Gill Hornby’s bestselling novel. Aisling Walsh, behind Sally Hawkins starrer “Maudie,” directs.

That being said, crime shows and dark topics still dominated the showcase, from Caracol Studios’ “Irreversible” – exploring such diverse subjects as mental health, homophobia and motherhood alongside the investigation in a small town “full of stories” – to “Palo Alto,” produced by Artza Productions and distributed by Keshet International .

“It’s ‘Mare of Easttown’ meets ‘Happy Valley,’” said Kinghorst, singling out the show’s complicated female lead. Who, at least according to one character, “tends to overcomplicate things just to avoid going home.”

Produced by Drama Apple Limited, “See Her Again” focuses on a police officer (and a father to a little girl) trying to trace a serial murder case across 25 years in Hong Kong. In the dynamic show, “crime meets time travel” – all thanks to a very unusual elevator.

Finally, “The Black Forest Murders” – distributed by Studiocanal – revisits real-life events that shook Germany. Now, a special team of detectives sets out to solve horrific murders, after two victims are found in the otherwise peaceful German countryside. The show is currently in post-production.

Beyond “Icebreaker,” Finland brought a second project to Cannes: “Valhalla Project” – also represented by Keshet International – which sees an ambitious climate scientist trying to find a path to a parallel universe previously researched by her father.

According to director and producer Juha Wuolijoki, “while incorporating sci-fi elements, this series focuses on unravelling the mysteries of the past. It has two storylines, 33 years apart, and it combines the Soviet ‘scientific utopia’ with a contemporary fight against the climate crisis.” With Sara Soulié (already leading another anticipated show, “Conflict”), it’s produced by Snapper Films Productions.

Supernatural elements – and plenty of humor – pop up in “We’re on It, Comrades!”

Robert Franke, VP of drama at ZDF Studios, told Variety in February : “In this show, two investigators from the Institute for Paranormal Phenomena try to solve mysterious cases, whether it’s alien abduction or an attack by the creepy goat monster. We are seeing a trend [in moving] away from classic mainstream series and towards productions that are a little more unexpected and unusual.”

Studiocanal’s action-packed, violent proposition “The Sentinels” might be answering to the very same need, showing a group of soldiers with superhuman abilities and strength – thanks to mysterious serum developed in the army laboratory that now runs through their veins – who might actually be able to end the First World War.

“One of Canal+ most ambitious projects to date,” teased Kinghorst.
