Home, Sweet Home

M/y home  is the world's first fast displacement yacht by heesen with a hybrid propulsion. the yacht is also known as project nova and yn 17859..

HOME  is a full aluminum yacht under 500 GT and measures 50m in length. She has a transatlantic range of 3,750 nautical miles at a speed of 12 knots. Her twin  MTU 12V with 600 kW each power her up to 16.3 knots. Her two 127 kW electric engines offer a speed of 9 knots just using generators with less noise and vibrating.

The yacht features – like many other successful Heesen yachts – the  Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF) by Dutch naval architects Van Oossanen. The exterior design was created by Omega Architects .

Home Yacht Heesen

During her sea trials, HOME reached the contractual speed of 16.3 with the traditional diesel engines and 9 knots in hybrid mode. Also, the noise and vibrations levels are under the contracted goals.

Furthermore, the yacht showed her efficiency. At 12 knots she consumes 98 liters per hour of diesel. That can be reduced to 45 liters per hour in the hybrid mode with a speed of 10 knots. Announced was a range of 3,750 nautical miles at 12 knots. Heesen corrected this number up to 4,250 nm.

HOME Interior

The owner assigned Cristiano Gatto to design the sophisticated linear interior. The full-beam owner suite (forward on the main deck) features floor-to-ceiling windows and a private study.

Guests cabins can be found on the lower deck amidships. There are  two doubles, two twins, and one full-beam VIP suite. The crew area with mess and cabins is forward located. On the lower deck is also the Gym and SPA. This area is also directly connected to the main deck through an extra staircase.

VIDEO OF HEESEN MOTOR YACHT HOME

Motor yacht Home is an ultra-efficient vessel, which provides low fuel consumption and extended range. Home burns 57 liters per hour at a speed of 10 knots. Without compromising high speed, this luxury vessel can reach a top speed of 16.3 knots, with the power coming from the main engines. She can cruise with complete silence at a speed of 9 knots, thanks to her diesel-electric propulsion system. Home is expected to register only 46 decibels of noise in the owner's suite while cruising in electric mode.

Omega Architects aimed to add some beach-villa style to the design of motor yacht Home. Thus, there is an extensive amount of glass and cutaway bulwarks to ensure plenty of natural light coming into the bright and airy interior. Cristiano Gatto worked on the minimalistic and modern design of Home's indoor living spaces. The dual-color palette was chosen to create light and relaxing ambiance, while some dark red and burgundy design elements would add to the lavish styling.

On the main deck of the luxury motor yacht Home, there is a spacious main salon with comfortable seating and dining areas. The lower deck has a fully equipped gymnasium and an engine room. The sundeck is a fantastic area for unwinding and leisure: there are a large wet bar and a spa pool for the guests to enjoy luxury cruising to the fullest. A large alfresco dining area is on the sun deck of the yacht.

A new residential cruise ship plans to sail around the world every 2½ years. Cabins start at $11 million.

  • Ulyssia Residences plans to launch a residential ship in 2028.
  • The 132-condo Ulyssia would sail around the world every 2½ years.
  • Buyers need a net worth of at least $27.9 million to be considered for its $11 million-plus cabins.

Insider Today

Do you have a travel itch, a love of sailing, and an extra $11 million to spare? If so, Ulyssia Residences has a ship for you.

The Switzerland-based company says its first 132-cabin residential vessel will launch in October 2028. From then on, the floating condominium would sail around the world every 2½ years, from the cold waters of Greenland to the warm beaches of Madagascar.

Ulyssia is one of several new contenders vying for cruise lovers' hearts and wallets. But unlike competitors such as Villa Vie and  GlobeCruises , this newcomer is marketing its vessel as a "superyacht" replete with high-end amenities like helicopters and submarines for ultra-high-net-worth travelers.

Ulyssia's condos would be some of the priciest and largest in the niche residential cruise industry.

the home super yacht

The ship's 132 cabins would accommodate up to 300 residents and guests. However, Alain Gruber, the CEO of Ulyssia Residences, told Business Insider in an email that he estimates the vessel will have an average of 200 guests onboard.

The one- to six-bedroom condos would start at 9.8 million euros, or about $10.95 million.

the home super yacht

It's a relatively steep starting cost — one of Villa Vie's most expensive cabins was reserved at $469,000, although it's about three times smaller than Ulyssia's smallest 1,216-square-foot accommodation.

Yet both are compact compared to Ulyssia's penthouses, the largest of which would span 10,570 square feet. As expected, with this size comes a steeper starting cost of €60 million, about $67.04 million.

No matter the square footage, Ulyssia's floating condos would all have amenities like reception rooms, kitchens, terraces, and floor-to-ceiling windows.

It's the price of a permanent around-the-world vacation on a luxury ship.

the home super yacht

Gruber said residents would vote on management's itinerary options, finalized three years in advance.

Like many mass-market around-the-world cruises , the ship would spend at least three nights — up to one week — at every port, giving travelers more time to immerse themselves in each destination.

Expect up to two "major expedition" segments every year, one in a cold climate (like the Northwest Passage or the Arctic) and one in warmer weather (like Madagascar or Micronesia).

Gruber noted that most interested travelers have been families and folks in their 50s.

the home super yacht

The ship would have children and education services to accommodate the youngest travelers.

As for the older guests, the company's CEO expects most to be "entrepreneurial" — the kind of people who would own multiple homes in different countries, Renato Chizzola, Ulyssia's senior vice president of lifestyle and development, said in a press release.

But there's one major roadblock between these wealthy would-be residents and a life at sea.

the home super yacht

Ulyssia doesn't have a ship yet, and the vessel acquisition process has become an infamously difficult challenge for similar startups.

Residential cruise companies can either build a new ship (as Ulyssia plans to) or refurbish an older used vessel.

Storylines is pursuing the former by building its own luxury residential ship. However, its launch has been delayed eight years to 2027, and former employees, consultants, and investors told BI in 2023 that they'd started to doubt the vessel would ever be built.

Life at Sea Cruises intended to purchase a used vessel for its three-year sailing. But it failed to secure enough funding and canceled its voyage two weeks before its planned departure in November 2023.

The company filed for bankruptcy eight months later.

Villa Vie successfully purchased a more-than-30-year-old vessel for its never-ending cruise, which could set sail in the coming days. However, its launch has already been delayed four months amid issues like the ship's aging rudder stocks and certifications.

Ulyssia's team tapped Meyer Werft to build its superyacht, a €1.7 billion — about $1.9 billion — project.

the home super yacht

The popular German shipbuilder has constructed cruise ships for recognizable companies like Disney, Celebrity, Norwegian, and Royal Caribbean.

Ulyssia said construction on its vessel is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2024 "but no later than" September 2025. The ship would then be completed in October 2028 (but by March 2029).

Gruber said his team is 'fully funded' and 6 months ahead of schedule.

the home super yacht

Frank Binder, the company's founder and chairman, is the principal investor. Customer deposits and financial institutions will also help finance the shipbuilding process.

The ship's amenities could provide some insight into its massive price tag.

the home super yacht

Ulyssia is promising amenities like a spa and gym with indoor padel and pickleball courts.

Take a dip in the ocean water at the ship's marina, which would be outfitted with water toys and dive equipment, including two submersibles.

Or, head to the skies with one of the two eight-seater helicopters.

Feeling peckish? The ship would have seven restaurants and four bars.

the home super yacht

Residents can also expect traditional cruise ship facilities like pools, a cigar lounge, a nightclub, a theater, and a medical center.

The latter would be upgraded with equipment for diagnostics and surgery, such as a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner.

Several members of Ulyssia's team, including its CEO, previously worked for The World, currently the only luxury residential ship in operation.

the home super yacht

The World and Ulyssia have two key differences — their vessels' ages and their residents' net worth.

The World's ship would be 26 years old by the time of Ulyssia's planned launch in 2028.

The World requires its buyers to have a minimum net worth of $10 million.

the home super yacht

Ulyssia's minimum is €25 million — about $27.87 million.

At least its travelers would get to see the world on a luxury superyacht. The helicopters and submarines probably help, too.

“Our focus was to create a design that not only captures attention with its sleek lines but also enhances the onboard experience for owners and guests alike,” managing director of Red Yacht Design Fatih Surekli said in a statement.

Livia Superyacht Concept

With a beam of roughly 36 feet, Livia offers a generous amount of room onboard. The interior includes five large staterooms, with each one opening to a private terrace with sea views. The owner’s suite is even more luxurious, spanning two decks and showcasing a lounge and private swimming pool.

The extravagance continues outdoors. The sprawling sundeck is home to a bar, an infinity pool, and a plush lounge, while the upper deck is adorned with a circular lounge, a fire pit, a giant dining table, and an outdoor cinema. A few more steps below, the main deck sports an epic sky lounge and the beach club is fitted with yet another pool. Wellness buffs are also catered to, with a sauna and gym located on the lower deck.

Livia will also be quite the cruiser. The yard didn’t go into specifics regarding propulsion, but says the yacht will have a cruising speed of 12 knots and deliver “exceptional performance on long voyages.”

$1B superyacht linked to Bill Gates said to be 'world's first' powered by hydrogen — see exclusive pics of its sleek electric tender

A hydrogen-powered superyacht reportedly being built for a powerful, billionaire client is making headlines.

But it's the vessel's smaller electric tender that could be game-changing for the boating world if the designers' full vision comes to fruition.

The 37-foot craft is being constructed by Seattle-based Zin Boats using parts fit for the International Space Station. It's rumored to be linked to Bill Gates , who would own both the superyacht and shore tender if the rumors are true. Forbes reported that the larger craft is the world's first hydrogen-fueled superyacht, dubbed Project 821 by Dutch builder Feadship . It's a $1 billion project, per the report.

It's the first boat of its kind that will go more than 60 miles per hour with 2,000 peak horsepower available.

The accompanying tender is a smaller, efficient vessel that oddly has a lot in common with Japanese homes, according to its designers.

"Every detail of the boat is hidden until you need it," Piotr Zin, founder and CEO of Zin Boats, told The Cool Down during an exclusive virtual tour of his production facility.

It's part of what the Zin Boats team considers to be a revolutionary process for shipwrights who incorporate the latest battery and control tech , navigation and steering features, and thoughtful and intelligent design.

Watch now: Expert shares one belief that 'two thirds' of the US population across the political spectrum hold

During the tour, Zin provided an in-depth look at the process behind the innovative tender's construction — from a cardboard/plywood 1:1-scale mockup to the gleaming finished hull that was under construction.

Recycled teak wood provides trim and flooring. Aluminum metal supports have a honeycomb construction with hollowed-out portions of the frame to help make the 13,814-pound carbon fiber vessel as light as possible.

"I firmly believe in a good design process," Zin said.

The Japanese-inspired efficiency starts with batteries under the floor. They are powerful, specially-made power packs that are part of Zin Boats' vision of electrifying the boating sector. Zin said it's a commonsense, cost-saving transition for boaters and one that's also good for the environment. The boats don't have a "drop of oil" or hydraulic fluid in them, he added.

It's the first boat of its kind that will go more than 60 miles per hour with 2,000 peak horsepower available.

The company started building novel electric boats in 2020. Logistics hangups tied to parts needed from the automotive sector required Zin Boats to take a pause. The team then focused on building its own technology .

"We learned very quickly that we needed to decouple from automotive," company president and COO David Donovick said. "We have to control our own technology."

That effort led to an exclusive global partnership with Irish battery maker Xerotech, which has a contract to build equipment for a European Space Agency space station . Now it also provides Zin Boats with more than 630 battery variations. The flexibility will help with the boat builder's rollout of other customizable vessels — all part of a plan to make battery-powered crafts throughout the industry.

It begins with boats that will be 20-plus feet in length, built on the same framework. Cabins, solar panels , and other features can be added to meet customer demand, according to the company. To drive home the quality and low-upkeep nature of the crafts, Zin said the maintenance page in the manual is mostly blank. It says "wash it," he added.

It's the first boat of its kind that will go more than 60 miles per hour with 2,000 peak horsepower available.

While the tender and other models will be priced in the luxury space for now, Zin Boats' leaders said they intend to make affordable options for everyday recreationists. They are willing to share battery and propulsion tech with other builders as well.

Part of the goal is to prove that batteries match and even exceed fuel-burning alternatives.

"I want to get you the same experience or better," Zin said. "And this is very doable.

For its part, the tender is setting several "world's firsts."

It's the first boat of its kind that will go more than 60 miles per hour with 2,000 peak horsepower available. The battery can be recharged in four hours. It has a leading electric tender range of more than 100 nautical miles. A joystick steering option is also a first, providing modern ease for complicated dock navigation. What's more, the tender is uniquely qualified to be housed inside another boat, a first for battery-powered crafts. It was also mandatory for the superyacht project, all per Zin Boats.

It is widely reported that the shipping sector, primarily large cargo vessels, produces about 3% of the world's heat-trapping air pollution. NASA links the planet's warming to increased risks for tidal flooding and rising marine temperatures .

In response, companies around the world are developing new versions of sails , hydrogen , and battery options as an answer. Importantly, you don't need a superyacht to make a difference. Zin said that many everyday items — citing power tools — are better with batteries.

Switching to electric lawn equipment, for example, is another great, money-saving next step for most people.

Zin added that he wants to make sure future generations have access to natural resources like the pristine Poland lakes he enjoyed as a child. As a result, cleaner boats bearing his name could be in a growing number of docks in the future.

"Here in Seattle … we take on a project and change the world," he said.

What Life Might Look Like on the World’s Biggest Yacht

Portrait of Adriane Quinlan

On a Tuesday morning in September, a six-foot-long plastic model of a boat sat on the second floor of the Explorers Club, looking a little like a beached Orca, sleek and out of place in the tweedy boardroom. The tiny yacht had traveled to East 70th Street from Los Angeles and, before that, made stops in Monaco and Zurich, Cannes, and West Palm Beach — a prop to entice buyers who can spend $10 million on a cabin in the world’s biggest yacht. If it gets made. The boat will be called the Ulyssia and it’s the passion project of Frank Binder, a billionaire from the Merck clan with a thing for boats (he once owned a shipyard in Monaco). Lenny Kravitz, his friend, is onboard to help design interiors. (“He’s a genius.”)

Binder has been doing a world tour to find other buyers — who might be hard to meet. Maintenance hovers around 3 percent a year, or $300,000 for that $10 million one-bedroom. It’s a big ask, especially for a boat that, if he does get recruits, won’t launch until 2028. To help, Binder brought on two former executives from the World , the luxury liner that was the first — and only — to prove rich people want to live … at sea, all year. (It launched in 2002, is still sold out, and has yet to snag on an iceberg or go bankrupt.)

Renato Chizzola , a senior vice-president for the Ulyssia who worked as the general manager of the World for five years, spoke to Curbed about the terrors of elephant seals and why he once hired Israeli snipers to come onboard.

This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.

What did your job on the World look like??

I was in charge of lifestyle, expedition, everything — even the kitchen. You have a captain who’s the master of the vessel, and he ultimately will have the last word on safety, security, where we go, where we can’t go. But then you also need to have somebody who has grown up in a galley carrying luggage. I’m 60 in October. When I was 27, I said, “Okay, how can I see the world without having money?” So in 1993, I was hired on the Queen Elizabeth II , then went to hotels, cruises, and in 46 years I traveled to 186 countries. I was allowed to live onboard and basically extend any service, any dream that a resident had.

the home super yacht

What’s the difference between this superyacht and the World ?

The World is now 23 years old. She was created in the late ’80s. She looks like a cruise ship. And the  Ulyssia is a yacht — the designer says this is his masterpiece.

We never had many amenities on the World . Here, we have a deli. We have a library with a card and games room. We have a table-tennis room. We have two paddle-tennis courts all inside, a multipurpose sports deck up there where the helicopters are, two hangers, two submarines to go down to the ocean, seven restaurants.

Then, we have this inflatable marina off the back of the boat. Imagine we’re near Bermuda. It’s a beautiful day. The sea is calm. We stop and we inflate this — it takes an hour — and we have tenders. You can go diving right there off the ship. The sea is yours. This marina is something the World could never ever have done, because there’s no space in the boat to keep that. The World was more elderly, a bit elderly retired. This is way younger. Why? Because we have so many amenities and offer adventure. Here, we are offering fewer apartments with more space. The balconies are huge. Luxury, for them, means space, time and getting whatever they wish, whenever, wherever. Freedom.

the home super yacht

Freedom , in a contained location —

Yes, and in a safe environment, completely protected against any danger. If a resident says, “I want to bring my family there, I want to be safe, I want to have no worries,” safety needs to be core to us. They want the freedom to do what they do at home — to run around with suits, jewelry. And if they are smart enough to say, “I want to go and see real scenarios, not luxury hotels,” they can go places where there’s no luxury and see how the world really works. That’s what this community wants.

Sounds like a security nightmare.

We will hire ex-Mossad physically, to be on the ship. On the World , we partnered with Marine Guard, one of the world’s best safety and security companies . It provides technical and physical support. And whenever we went to critical places — for example, when we went through the Gulf of Aden, I brought in Israeli snipers to come on the boat. Nobody, no pirate on earth can come in past them. Then on shore excursions, we have every form of security that you can imagine. Satellite images. Images underwater, over water. When we went to Antarctica, to the Northwest Passage — meeting with the Inuits, the Aborigines — you need people who know them. You need people who safeguard you. In the Antarctic, you are only allowed to go with Zodiacs to the beaches. You need people who know that, who know the sea lions, the penguins. We bring them onboard — 20 or 25 people who know everything about every area. And when we do expeditions, we bring on EYOS, one of the greatest expedition leaders in the world, which goes to places like the Titanic .

Is this, like the Titanic , experimental in any way?

No, there are similar yachts. But in four years, when she will hopefully leave port, she will be the greenest yacht of this size ever built. And at that time, we may build for whatever is available in terms of fuel, whether it’s methanol or nuclear. There are vessels already going nuclear, military vessels.

But isn’t this all risky?

It’s the opposite. You will see more and more environments like this at sea. Why? Because you can escape anything! If there’s an outbreak in New York, a big virus, you just won’t go there. If there’s a war there, you just don’t go there. If there’s a storm, you don’t go there.

So this will be a way for the global elite, basically, to pay to avoid any problem.

Is it going to be a one percent community? Yes, obviously, but they need to do good around the world, otherwise they cannot come to the community.

Imagine the following. We will have a medical center onboard. We have MRI machines. We have a dentistry. Our doctors, when we go to the west coast of Africa, to Senegal, we can have our doctors go out and help. And as we go around the world, we will help to map the ocean floor. We’ll have tools available to measure and send these to oceanic institutions that then take this data. So we are helping to make the world a better place. And that’s the legacy.

How are you going to gauge whether the people who want to live here also want to do good?

There’s a very tough background check before being allowed to buy. So can it be that a Colombian drug lord or a Russian weapons dealer comes and says, “Oh, I’m going to take ten?” No, that can’t happen. We’re not a community for people from mainland China who don’t speak English and want to spit around. Or aggressive Russians. We are not a community for sheikhs from any Arab countries. And I have nothing against the Chinese and Russians. I love everybody. I’ve been everywhere. But they just don’t fit here, and they won’t come. We want like-minded golf players, tennis players, joggers, bikers, F1 drivers.

We will have roughly 30 to 35 percent Europeans, 30 to 35 percent North Americans, including from Canada, possibly a few from Mexico City, a few from São Paulo. Then we have about 20 percent from Australia, South Africa, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan. Then we expect to have about 10 percent of people from all over, we don’t know where. It could be anywhere.

They’ll need a certain amount of money to get into this boat and I assume, therefore, that you can’t be that picky.

No, we can’t. But we try to be. It’s a balance. We meet them three, four, five, six times. We invite them, show them something, then they say, “Oh, I trust these people. I believe in them.” It’s a slow process.

Can a buyer get kicked off?

Oh, absolutely.

What’s the justice system?

There’s a board that’s voted in and we have our chairman on the board. Almost all of the members are people who have either been on yachts, have their own yacht, or have led organizations.

If people have their own yachts, why would they sign up for this?

They might have a beautiful yacht of a hundred meters, but they can’t hire all these education guides, explorers all the time. We have 22 guest suites. Imagine we’re coming to Japan. Blossom season. We bring an ex Japanese prime minister onboard, maybe a three-star Michelin chef. We bring them on, let’s say, three weeks before. And they lecture. We can have experts speak about anything. Volcanoes, health and wellness, food and beverage, politics, archeology.

And they have you, who’s been to 186 countries.

Exactly. So when I do speak to people who want to buy and invite them for lunch or a coffee, they listen because they know, Oh, this guy has been there. You don’t need to tell them something that you think can happen. You can actually tell them a story. When I went to Antarctica the last time, in 2009, on the way back to the Zodiac, I am walking and these big elephant seals — those are the big guys, like three tons and ten feet long — and all of a sudden, out of nowhere, there’s a big sound like MWUGHOWUGH and a big one came up, out of the sand. I stood there frozen. These are moments when you think, Is this really happening to me? How fortunate, how lucky am I to be able to experience moments like this? And all the wealthy people say the same.

Sailing yachts like Mike Lynch's are 'unsinkable bodies', CEO of boat manufacturing firm says

Bayesian superyacht which sank off Italy is an "unsinkable" vessel, Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, said.

Vessels like Mike Lynch's stricken superyacht are "unsinkable", according to the chief executive of the firm which makes and sells them.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, told Sky News there are no flaws with the design and construction of the Bayesian superyacht which capsized in a storm off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, on Monday.

Five bodies were found by divers on Wednesday - taking the number of confirmed dead to six.

The Italian Sea Group also owns the firm that built British tech tycoon Mr Lynch's Bayesian, and Mr Costantino said the vessels "are the safest in the most absolute sense".

News of the sinking left CEO of The Italian Sea Group Giovanni Costantino in ‘sadness on the one hand and disbelief on the other’.

"Being the manufacturer of Perini [boats], I know very well how the boats have always been designed and built," he said.

"And as Perini is a sailing ship... sailing ships are renowned to be the safest ever."

He said their structure and keel made them "unsinkable bodies".

Mr Costantino said news of the sinking "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other".

"This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact," he said.

It is understood Italian prosecutors investigating the incident are continuing to hold interviews with the survivors.

On Tuesday they questioned the captain for more than two hours to help reconstruct what happened and provide useful technical details.

Four British inspectors are also in Porticello and have begun a preliminary assessment of events.

It is understood they will look at all relevant aspects of the incident, including the design, stability, and operation of the vessel. They will also examine the effects of the weather conditions experienced.

Twenty-two people were on board the vessel, 15 of whom were rescued - including Briton Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter Sofia.

Divers will resume efforts on Thursday morning to bring ashore a body they found earlier. One more person remains missing.
