Dana Carvey Apologizes to Sharon Stone for ‘Offensive’ Skit on ‘SNL’

By Emily Zemler

Emily Zemler

Sharon Stone appeared on the  Fly on the Wall with Dana Carvey and David Spade  podcast this week, where she reflected on her 1992 appearance on Saturday Night Live . The actress hosted the late-night sketch show to promote Basic Instinct and some of the skits were themed around the actress taking her clothes off.

On the podcast, Carvey acknowledged that Stone “was such a good sport,” adding that “the comedy we did in 1992 with Sharon Stone, we would be literally arrested now.”

One sketch in particular was the “Airport Security Sketch,” in which male airport security officers made the actress removed her clothing one item at time to check if she was carrying anything dangerous. Carvey played an Indian security guard, who eventually started filming her after she took off her shirt.

“I know the difference between a misdemeanor and a felony, and I think that we were all committing misdemeanors [back then] because we didn’t think there was something wrong then,” Stone replied. “We didn’t have this sense. That was funny to me, I didn’t care. I was fine being the butt of the joke.”

She added, “Now we’re in such a weird and precious time. People have spent too much time alone. People don’t know how to be funny and intimate and any of these things with each other. Everyone is so afraid and are putting up such barriers around everything that people can’t be normal with each other anymore. It’s lost all sense of reason.”

“I came out to do the monologue live, which is always super scary, and a bunch of people started storming the stage saying they were going to kill me during the opening monologue,” Stone remembered. “The security that’s always in there froze because they’d never seen anything like that happen. Lorne started screaming at [security], ‘What are you doing? Watching the fucking show?’ And Lorne started beating them up and pulling them back from the stage. The stage manager looked at me and said, ‘Hold for five.’ So all these people were getting beat up and handcuffed in front of me as we went live.”

“If you think the monologue is scary to begin with, try doing it as people are getting handcuffed in front of you,” Stone said, adding, “I honestly blacked out for half of the show.”

Paz Talent

EXCLUSIVE : After spending 21 years at A3 Artists Agency — and Abrams Artists Agency, as it was formerly known — veteran talent agent Sharon Paz has transitioned to management with the launch of the L.A.-based Paz Talent .

Paz is one of myriad A3 alums to have found their next destination following A3’s dissolution, on which we were first to report. Most recently serving there as Senior Agent, she started in the mailroom at Abrams in 2003, working her way up the ranks as an assistant in the theatrical department, before being promoted to agent in 2007. A natural fit at Abrams, where a love of the craft of theatre was celebrated, given her academic background in theater at NYU’s Tisch, Paz went on to co-found A3’s philanthropic organization, Agents of Change, which brought staff on both coasts together to give back to the community by participating in volunteer opportunities.

In a statement on the launch of Paz Talent, Paz told Deadline, “Being an artist is having the ability of being vulnerable and trusting. Trusting of the audience, your colleagues and your representatives. I came from a culture at Abrams Artists Agency where we nurtured and advocated for our clients. Moving into management is a seamless and organic move for me and I am so blessed to be able to continue to work with such amazing talented artists.”

Hamilton County Auditor Brigid Kelly resigns over 'serious health issues'

Hamilton County Auditor Brigid Kelly resigned Wednesday to "focus on personal health" after two years of cancer treatment .

"My time in the office has also been challenging as I've grappled with serious health issues," Kelly wrote in a resignation letter delivered to the county board of commissioners on Wednesday. "Therefore, I am resigning from the office of county auditor."

Kelly's resignation was effective immediately at 9 a.m. Wednesday. She recommended the commissioners appoint Chief Deputy Auditor Amy Humphrey to fill the interim role of auditor.

"Resigning from the auditor's office is a difficult decision, but one that is necessary to focus on my personal health," Kelly wrote.

Kelly, 40, of Sycamore Township, was elected auditor in 2022 and took office March 13, 2023. She had served in the state legislature from 2016 to 2023 and had been active in local Democratic party activities.

Prep for the polls: See who is running for president and compare where they stand on key issues in our Voter Guide

Hamilton County Commissioner Denise Driehaus announced at Thursday's' board of commissioners meeting that Kelly had entered hospice care.

Kelly backs Jessica Miranda for her auditor

Kelly is asking people to support the appointment of State Rep. Jessica Miranda, D-Forest Park to replace her, touting Miranda's experience in the General Assembly, as a school board member, and as a small business owner.

"Rep. Miranda has a deep understanding of school funding, which is the largest portion of tax distribution for most property owners in Hamilton County, and how the unconstitutional formula impacts property taxes," Kelly wrote in an email to supporters. " In all these roles, Rep. Miranda knows that the government and elected officials work for the taxpayer. "

Miranda is running for reelection to her Hamilton County House seat. She faces Republican Jenn Giroux in November.

As a lawmaker, Miranda has advocated for eliminating the statute of limitations for child sex abuse. It's personal for Miranda, a survivor of sexual abuse. She also worked on campaign finance reform after Ohio House Speaker Larry Householder was arrested on corruption charges. Miranda and Kelly also co-sponsored a bill to require safe storage of firearms, which ultimately didn't pass in Ohio's GOP-controlled Legislature.

Kelly tells of cancer diagnosis

Kelly told The Enquirer last October she was being treated for esophageal cancer , which she had no predisposition for. She was diagnosed with it in April 2022 while campaigning for auditor , she said.

Kelly told The Enquirer she had to advocate for herself to even get the cancer diagnosis, something she knows is common for women. She was having back pain, initially chalking it up to running too far or too much. But she knew it was more than that and pressed for answers until she got a proper diagnosis.

Kelly was born and raised in Norwood and attended Saint Ursula Academy. She went to Xavier University and then to the University of Cincinnati, where she earned a master's degree.

For more than a decade she organized for the United Food and Commercial Workers Union.

Kelly ran for state representative in 2016 and won, replacing Hamilton County Commissioner Denise Driehaus, who could not run again due to term limits. Driehaus instead ran for commissioner.

Kelly then replaced longtime Auditor Dusty Rhodes, who did not run again in 2022.

Kelly came to the auditor's job at the busiest possible time for the auditor's office − amid the county's  six-year property assessment process . It's been unsettling for many homeowners subject to an increase in property taxes, but Kelly has been at the forefront working to answer questions from frustrated residents.

Tony Kushner Jonathan Glazer

Screenwriter and playwright Tony Kushner has defended Jonathan Glazer ‘s Oscar speech against critics.

The speech has been met with both kudos on social media and dissent in the industry, including an open letter from over 1,000 Jewish creatives and execs denouncing his words.

Kushner, who he himself has received four Academy Awards nominations for “Munich,” “Lincoln” and “The Fabelmans,” was a guest on Wednesday’s episode of “Haaretz Podcast.” When asked about the speech, he said Glazer’s words were an “unimpeachable, irrefutable statement.”

Asked if he identified with the speech, Kushner answered, “Of course. I mean, who doesn’t? What he’s saying is so simple. He’s saying: Jewishness, Jewish identity, Jewish history, the history of the Holocaust, the history of Jewish suffering must not be used in a campaign of — as an excuse for a project of dehumanizing or slaughtering other people.”

“This is a misappropriation of what it means to be a Jew, what the Holocaust meant, and [Glazer] rejects that,” he continued. “Who doesn’t agree with that? What kind of person thinks that what’s going on now in Gaza is acceptable?”

Kushner’s work often ties in thematically to his Jewish identity, and he has publicly spoken out in the past about Israel and Palestine.

The “Haaretz Podcast” is a weekly show hosted by Allison Kaplan Sommer from Israel’s oldest daily newspaper, which tackles topics such as Israel, the Middle East and Jewish politics and culture.
