Mexico Yacht Charters – Sea of Cortez

Loreto | isla coronado | isla carmen | isla san josé isla san francisco | isla espíritu santo | la paz | cabo san lucas, the sea of cortez (gulf of california) – mexico.

Jacques Cousteau called the Sea of Cortez the “aquarium of the world.”  The narrow strip of water between Mexico’s Baja peninsula and the mainland, the Sea of Cortez remains largely a secret waiting to be discovered.

Cousteau’s moniker is accurate: here you can dive with massive, gentle whale sharks or play tag with spirited sea lion pups.

The wildlife below and above the water is just part of the draw. The scenery is breathtaking: desert mountains towering over clear-ascan- be turquoise seas. It’s the perfect backdrop for watersports, hiking, beach barbecues or simply dining al fresco and marveling at the starry sky in a land free from light pollution.

Travels along mexico’s sea of cortez.

Best of all, you will see few tourists and even fewer boats – superyachts do come here, but it’s nothing compared to the busy winter cruising destinations.

When you’re done with the seclusion, head for the southernmost tip of the Baja Peninsula, where you will find the celebrity haunts of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, both of which boast high-end hotels, shopping, excellent restaurants – a Nobu opened recently – and tequila-fueled nightlife.

A huge private airport makes it easy for visitors to jet in and out of Cabo and explore the stunning Sea of Cortez beyond. Cabo is also an ideal place to ring in the New Year, with exciting festivities and a series of dazzling fireworks exploding off the coast – best seen by boat, of course.

Fly into Loreto International Airport and meet your yacht at Marina Puerto Escondido. You can either head to the mountains to tour the restored San Javier Mission church (one of the best preserved in Baja) or just settle in on board and get to know the crew while sipping a cocktail.

Isla Coronado

In the early morning, head to Isla Coronado, which has a hidden white sand beach. Grab your snorkel to get your first taste of the incredible marine life that the Sea of Cortez offers. Spot sea lions, dolphins and scores of species of fish, or enjoy a peaceful paddleboarding session.

Isla Carmen

Make the short cruise (less than eight nautical miles) to Isla Carmen, the largest island in Loreto Bay National Marine Park. Spend the day circumnavigating the island while also making use of the yacht’s toy box – exploring by jet ski, sailing dinghy or on board the yacht’s tender. Back on board, recline on the sundeck’s ample sunpads to watch a film under the stars.

Isla San José and Isla San Francisco

While you sleep, the yacht will move down the coastline to Isla San José, home to abandoned salt flats and forests of giant cacti to wander through on foot, and mangroves to explore by tender. After your adventures, your yacht will head south to the smaller Isla San Francisco, where there is the perfect anchorage for deploying the water slide in the clear waters.

Isla Espíritu Santo and Isla Partida

Your yacht will head further south to the uninhabited Isla Espíritu Santo and Isla Partida. Declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, the islands are home to sharks, rays, turtles, dolphins and a large colony of sea lions. Snorkel with the adorable sea lion pups, who will play with you in the water, or take the tender to Ensenada Grande, considered to be one of the world’s most beautiful beaches.

After a few days in the wilderness, pay a visit to the city of La Paz, with its vibrant art scene and intriguing international history. Stroll along its Malecón waterfront, which is packed with sculptures created by local artists, or visit the Plaza Constitución, with its 19th-century Our Lady of Peace Cathedral Basilica set in the shady Velasco Garden.

Cabo Pulmo National Park

Wake up in the Cabo PuImo National Park, a dream diving destination that’s home to sea turtles and rays. Spend your final day in the water, where you’ll discover why Jacques Cousteau nicknamed this stretch of coastline “the world’s aquarium.”

The next morning your yacht will head to the party beaches of Cabo San Lucas. Disembark and fly out from its international airport or enjoy a few days at the new Nobu Hotel Los Cabos and book a table for dinner at the renowned Nobu restaurant.

MEXICO and the SEA of CORTEZ YACHT CHARTERS

IDEAL TIME TO CHARTER: December – April

Mexico’s Sea of Cortez, also known as the Gulf of California, paints a more authentic picture of Mexico than visiting by cruise ship. Take a private yacht charter vacation to this vast sea which divides the Baja Peninsula from the mainland, and enjoy spectacular scenery and fewer crowds. Get a flavor of the true Mexico when you visit the region’s towns. With the exception of Cabo San Lucas, a popular tourist location, there are quaint ports and many remote islands with amazing biodiversity. The marine life in the Sea of Cortez is outstanding, with common seasonal sightings of migratory blue whales (largest of species coming from the Artic and Alaska), California sea lions, frigate birds, blue-footed boobies and dolphins. Kayaking, snorkeling and diving here offer a wonderful way to view the pristine landscapes and diverse wildlife.

SUGGESTED ITINERARY

For best results, tell us your desired travel dates and itinerary ideas and let our complimentary planning service do the rest.

Sea of Cortez La Paz Mexico

La Paz to Puerto Balandra – Arrive La Paz, depart marina and anchor at Puerto Balandra (8 miles, 1.5hrs) passing Roca Lobos to see sea lions. This is an isolated, unpopulated coastal area with eight beaches, an interior salt lagoon and a rock formation called “El Hongo” (the mushroom) which has become the symbol of La Paz. This area is surrounded by low reddish mountains that contain the occasional desert tree and huge cardón cactus. The red color of the mountains contrasts with the white sands of the beaches facing the Gulf with its turquoise, blue and green waters. These waters are filled with thousands of multi-colored small fish, coral and larger fish such as tuna, striped mullet, “sierra”, barracuda, dogfish and green sharks. There are also starfish and stingrays here.

Just back from the sea itself is a salt lagoon created by sea waters that occasionally come inland. It is shallow enough to walk across and surrounded by mature mangroves. The water is generally very warm, about 84F/30C average, and because of this and its shallowness, the water evaporates rapidly, making it saltier than the ocean water. While there are small beach restaurants (palapas) and places to rent equipment for aquatic sports it has not been built up by the community that lives in the La Paz area in order to preserve its natural state.

La Paz Bay to Isla Espiritu Santo – Head across La Paz bay to swim with whale sharks. After lunch sail back to Isla Espiritu Santo and anchor in Puerto Ballena. *Explore the bay by tender.

DAY 2 (ALTERNATIVE)

Bahia San Gabriel – Visit San Gabriel (7 miles, 1 hr). to  dive the wreck of the Salvaterra (sunken ferry at 60 feet deep) or snorkel Rocas Suwanee in San Lorenzo Channel. In the afternoon, hike or walk (easy well marked trail, approx 2 miles one way) over island to Playa Bonanza or move to Puerto Ballena (4 miles 0.5 hr).

Puerto Ballena to Galeta Partida – Diving or hiking day.  In Puerto Ballena, snorkel at Isla Gallo and/or Isla Gallina or dive either Fang Ming wreck (70 feet deep, mast at 177 below surface) or Lapas No3 wreck (60 feet deep, mast at 27 feet below surface), wrecks were purposely sunk to form  reefs.   Optional: take a short hike around the bay.  In the afternoon, sail to Caleta Partida (6 miles, 1hr), beach, paddle boarding (Caleta Partida is perfect to learn to paddle board as it is very sheltered flat water and shallow), snorkeling, short hiking trail to head of bay, cross over beach and paddle boarding to sea caves on east coast.  Fun activity: remote controlled sail boat regatta.

Beach, dive or hike – After breakfast morning sail out into La Paz bay. Anchor Ensenada Grande on Isla Partida for lunch. Travel Magazine voted this the most beautiful beach in Mexico and one of the top 12 beaches in the world. Beach, hike up hills overlooking the bay, swim, snorkel, tender ride round to next bay (Las Cuevitas) to see blue footed booby colony, dive at Rocas Tintorera.

Los Islotes – Snorkel and swim among friendly and curious sea lions. With its rugged cliffs and coves carved deeply into the coastline it is a good place to go beachcombing or take a hike along the rocky coast, keeping your eye out for brown pelicans, gulls, wandering great blue herons, and boobies. Depending on weather conditions, you may sail down the east coast (lunch underway) and anchor at Playa la Bonanza (12 miles, 1.5 – 2hrs).  enjoy an afternoon stroll on the beach (nearly 2 miles long crescent shaped white sandy beach), or return down the west coast and revisit any of the previous anchorages you’d like to enjoy again.

Playa Bonanza or Puerto Ballandra – If at Playa Bonanza, spend the morning at anchor to enjoy water sports.  Divers, hike across the island to Bahia San Gabriel (easy well marked path, 2 miles each way) to dive the wreck of the Salvaterra in San Lorenzo channel.  If on the west coast, morning at anchor enjoying water sports, afternoon sail to Puerto Ballandra (10 miles, 1.5hrs) or return to marina for evening, ready for a night on the dock or a meal ashore in La Paz.

La Paz – After breakfast return to marina (8 miles, 1.5hrs) and go ashore to experience La Paz.

The Sea of Cortez contains one of the worlds most diverse marine environments containing over 900 islands with 244 under UNESCO protection as World Heritage Bio-Reserves. The natural sea life can range from 50-ton sperm whales to colonies of sea-lions, breaching humpback whales, airborne manta rays and curious dolphins. The area is also know for Marlin, Wahoo, Dorado and Tuna fishing.

The beach will already be set up for your arrival and you will just need to change into your swim suits and jump right in!

Things to do near Loreto / Coronado

  • Several Dive Sites
  • Loreto Golf & Spa

Isla Coronado

The island is an important piece of the ecology of the Gulf of California. In 1940, marine biologist Ed Ricketts, together with his friend, author John Steinbeck, conducted an expedition and collecting trip in the Gulf of California (sometimes known as the Sea of Cortez) to explore the rich ecology of the intertidal zone. Coronado Island and the Bahia de los Angeles were part of that expedition. The resulting book by Steinbeck and Ricketts, The Log from the Sea of Cortez , remains a classic document of the natural history and ecology of the Gulf of California.

Sea of Cortez yacht charter coastal scenic panorama, near the Espiritu Santo Biosphere Reserve.

Isla Coronados is a wonderful spot for snorkeling, fishing and hiking. The island is surrounded by bright turquoise waters and soft sand beach. A trail leading up to the volcano from the beach, just northeast of the sand spit is perfect for those wishing to stretch their legs and work up a sweat. During late spring and summer months, when the Sea of Cortez warms, Dorado fishing is exceptional in this area.

Day 1: Isla Danzante North

Cruise north about 17 miles to the crystal clear blue and turquoise waters of Honeymoon Cove. The narrow island is ideal for hiking and exploring and offers plenty to see for kayakers. Trailheads can be found at any of the 3 lobes of Honeymoon cove. The vistas of the Sierra do la Gigantic range can be explored from these diverse trails. The anchorage provides crystal clear waters ideal for diving and snorkeling.

Things to do at Isla Danzante North

Day 2: Bahia Agua Verde

Schooling of yellow-tailed surgeon fish on a Sea of Cortez yacht charter

After a short 22 mile cruise the yacht will arrive in the peaceful yet vibrant fishing village of Aqua Verde. The village is set against the soaring, jagged peaks of Baja California’s Sierra de la Gigantic mountain range. The local people are welcoming and friendly. The village features a local goat dairy farm with many shops making it an ideal stop for re-provisioning. The surrounding mountains and green water are a highlight of the area.

Things to do in Bahia Agua Verde:

  • Visit the goat dairy

Day 3: Isla San Francisco

51 miles up, the yacht will anchor at the National Park Isla San Francisco. The island is known for it hiking and scenery. Featuring a beautiful crescent shaped bay, fine white sand beaches that accentuate the crystal clear, blue waters and burnt-red cliffs the Isla is perfect for snorkeling and relaxing on the beach. Things to do at Isla San Francisco:

  • Relaxing at the beach

Day 4 & 5: Isla Espiritu Santo

Just 14nm north of La Paz sits Isla Espiritu Santo and Isla La Partida, considered the crown jewels of the islands in the Gulf. An isthmus joins the two and depending on the tide you can either walk or take a small boat from one side to the other. The front side of the islands is lined by a series of fingers and bays, each one with its own claim to fame while staying equally beautiful. The sand bottom and shallow depths bring out a light and transparent aqua blue sea color, which reminds many of the  Caribbean . Ensenada Grande Beach, on Isla Partida, was voted the most beautiful beach in Mexico by The Travel Magazine and one of the top 12 beaches in the world. The islands are protected under UNESCO as a biosphere and serve as an excellent place to hike, walk, or just mindlessly explore.

Sea-lion-underwater-on-a-Sea-of-Cortez-yacht-charter

Los Islotes is famous for it’s sea lion rookery. Located just a half mile off the northwest tip of Isla Partida, snorkelers and divers frequent this rocky cove to experience the beauty of the sea lions swimming with their cubs.

Ensenada Grande is a great anchorage drenched in natural beauty. Beautiful views up a small hill from the beach give way to a close look at the limestone caves and inland vegetation.

Day 6 & 7: Balandra & La Paz

View of Cabo San Lucas downtown and marina on a Sea of Cortez yacht charter

Puerto Balandra is a picture perfect anchorage with its brilliant white sand and sparkling waters. A great lunch or overnight stop before our arrival in La Paz. Surrounded by barren desert, La Paz is set amidst ancient laurel trees and coconut and date palms. The city is laid out in classic grid fashion with streets radiating from the city’s northwest facing waterfront (Paseo Alvaro Obregon). Running parallel to Paseo Obregon is the city’s lovely malecon (waterfront promenade). A few blocks inland is the main square with its pink quartz gazebo, tiled walkways and 19th century cathedral. El Mogote, a flat deserted sandbar, sits offshore.

Superyacht Charter Sea of Cortez

Sea of Cortez Yacht Charter

Private Yachting Cruises on the Sea of Cortez

The Sea of Cortez offers the most diverse collection of marine life in the world ready for you to explore on a superyacht charter. Snorkel amongst the reefs, dive amongst the turtles and dolphins, marvel at the giant manta rays as they ‘fly' out of the water. Watch from the deck as blue whales breach next to the yacht and Californian sea lions show off in front of you. Rent a crewed superyacht with YPI to have the best cruising possible in the Sea of Cortez. This is an example of an eight day yacht charter itinerary for the Sea of Cortez. Yacht charter itineraries are created individually for every client based around personal preferences and how you want to spend your time onboard your superyacht in Central America.

Beach at La Paz, Sea of Cortez

The Peaceful Place

Enjoy a welcome cocktail and delicious lunch on board your motor or sailing boat before exploring this charming city. Visit the Nuestra Senora de La Paz cathedral before heading to the Whale Museum to learn about their habits and evolution. Deepen your knowledge of this area’s culture and history at the Natural History Museum. Saunter along the waterfront and admire the many statues along the way – the beautiful bronze Dove of Peace, the giant clam shell and its silver pearl, the Queen of the Sea, dolphins, whales and manta rays culminating in a bronze of Jacques Cousteau - perfect for a selfie.

Superyacht Charter Bahia Balandra

Bahia Balandra

Enjoy your first breakfast on board as your superyacht takes a short cruise to this stunning location. The dune backed beach of Balandra sweeps round a wide bay shallow enough to wade across. Take the kayaks or paddleboards to skim over the surface to other small coves. Explore the mangroves rich with wildlife or hike up the red rock hills. Another selfie moment beckons with El Hongo – a mushroom-shaped rock at the end of the bay – which is the emblem of the area. Have a picnic lunch in one of the small coves and snooze away the afternoon. Enjoy the golden sunset before a delicious dinner on board.

Superyacht Charter Isla San Francisco

Isla San Francisco

Sea stars & urchins.

Gaze out at your surroundings as the motor or sailing boat cruises further north – look out for manta rays, dolphins – maybe the odd passing whale. Try your hand at some deep sea fishing en route – your chef will be happy to prepare your catch for dinner. Head ashore at Isla San Francisco and hike up the narrow ridge which divides this tiny island; take some snaps of your fellow charterers kayaking in the calm waters below. The shallow waters are ideal for snorkeling amongst giant blue damselfish, beautiful sea stars and flower urchins. Watch the sunset whilst enjoying a margarita before your beach barbeque.

Superyacht Charter Isla San Jose

Isla San Jose

Salt and sand.

Give your breakfast orders to the onboard chef as the superyacht relocates to the next stop. San José is an island of stark contrasts - beautiful sandy bays, green mangroves and rocky scrubland with a cacti-studded desert; the expanse of salt flats hidden by ochre-colored cliffs. Climb up the cliffs for an Instagram-worthy view. Explore the mangroves by small tender or kayak. Take selfies with the giant Saguaro cacti or swim in the naturally protected bay. Watch the Blue Footed Boobies formation dive for their lunch – listen for the whistle which signals the plunge into the sea. Enjoy this perfect example of a diverse ecosystem. After dinner, relax in the jacuzzi and gaze into the night sky glittering with stars onboard your crewed motor or sailing boat.

Superyacht Charter Sea of Cortez

Isla Partida and Los Islotes

Up close and personal with sea lions.

Ensure that your cameras/GoPro’s are fully charged as you ready yourself to meet the inhabitants of Los Islotes, home to a colony of Californian sea lions. Film these bright, friendly creatures as they show off and frolic right in front of you. It may even be possible to snorkel with them and their pups. On Isla Partida dive amongst the rocks teeming with colourful angel fish or rainbow wrasse. Soak up the sun on Ensenada Grande - voted one of the best beaches in Mexico - or paddleboard around the many peninsulas that make up this islet. Climb up to the cliff tops and marvel at the myriad shades of blue and greens stretching out around you. Share your photos and adventures over another delicious dinner on board your superyacht.

Superyacht Charter Isla Espiritu Santo

Luxury Yacht Rental in Sea of Cortez

Luxury yacht charter guide to sea of cortez.

Jacques Cousteau and John Steinbeck both fell hard for the sublime waters of the Sea of Cortez and for good reason. These marine rich waters brim with secret anchorages, strange creatures of the deep, and blissful islands that can go years without seeing a yacht charter passing through. Getting off the beaten track can be tricky in this oversaturated tourist world, but the Sea of Cortez still manages to keep its surreal authenticity. These are lands of wild coastlines, hidden snorkeling gems, salt cracked desert landscapes and deep blue biodiversity.

Reasons to Charter a Yacht in the Sea of Cortez

The worlds aquarium.

Celebrated as the aquarium of the world, a yacht charter in the Sea of Cortez is full of exciting animal encounters. Not only will you get to witness dolphins frolicking in the surf but those who dive deep into the blue can get up close and personal with over 900 species of fish. Beyond the blue, there are water birds, marine plants, sea lions and even migrating humpbacks.

Pure Authenticity

Other than the glitzy shores of Cabo San Lucas, tourism hasn’t hit the Sea of Cortez hard – if at all. Those yacht charter guests looking to see a side of traditional Mexico will find that the towns that scatter these shores are as authentic as can be. Sleepy fishing villages, remote anchorages and a feeling of being a modern-day explorer keeps the Sea of Cortez high on an intrepid yachters bucket list.

UNESCO Bliss

Awarded UNESCO status for being a spot of outstanding beauty, you cannot tear your eyes away from the dramatic cliffs, turquoise hues, and desert dreams that make up the Sea of Cortez and its islands. The landscapes you can see on a yacht charter around the Sea of Cortez hold echoes of another world with their shimmering deserts, salt flats, and deep volcanic craters.

Remote Shores

While the waters around the Sea of Cortez teem with life, the desert shores provide a staggeringly stark contrast. The effect is almost poetic – sizzling temperatures, the occasional slither of a snake, darting lizards and giant cacti with prickly branches. Further in and the salt flats gleam and glow like a mirage of silica sand – flanked by shadowy mountains like mirages way off in the distance. There’s no doubt, the Sea of Cortez and surrounds have an ethereal feel.

Where to Visit in the Sea of Cortez

Cabo san lucas.

While most of the Sea of Cortez brims with wild and remote islands, Cabo San Lucas is where you will find the tourist hordes. They come for the floury white sands, the arched cliffs, and the wild nights that follow fun days filled with dolphin trips, snorkeling and horse back riding on these soft sands. From nature watching at El Arco to dancing all night under the influence of tequila at El Squid Roe, Cabo San Lucas is a must stop spot for yacht charters.

Isla Partida

Less than an hour from the shores of La Paz, the Isla Partida and Espiritu Santo welcome yacht charters in the Sea of Cortez into a rainbow world. The colors of Isla Partida are caused by minerals that have been shaken to the surface by tremors and earthquakes. The result is rosy pinks, deep reds, earthy browns and warm creams that stand out like precious gems against the opal hues of the sea. This is a place to swim with sea lions, visit pretty pearl farms, and generally gaze at the layers of volcanic history from the deck of your luxury yacht.

A slice of city life awaits you in La Paz, a city that has sprawled since the 19th century when its pearl diving industry took off. Drop anchor and head into the Old Town to explore the main square, the colorful architecture, and the chic sidewalk cafes. Visit the Whale Museum and snap pictures of the Dominican cathedral before hitting the Mercado to see Mexico dressed in all her best regional colors. Those who can’t bear to be torn away from the Sea of Cortez can head a little north to Balandra Beach where kayaking and tender tours of the mangroves takes you back to nature.

Los Islotes

Yacht charter guests who want to see sea lions in the Sea of Cortez should be sure to set sail for Los Islotes. This smidge of an island is home to a 200 strong colony of honking creatures and is one of the best places in the whole world for watching the sea lions frolic and even swimming alongside them. The rocky shores are best discovered and circled by boat, allowing you to glimpse the playful mammals splashing and swimming through shoals as fish as pelicans dive from above.

When to Charter a Yacht in the Sea of Cortez

The Sea of Cortez can be a year-round destination for yacht charters thanks to its warm weather and impressive array of wildlife. Spring is the best time of year for those who want to witness large pods of dolphins and whales passing through and who also want to witness the plethora of nesting birds that screech and soar overhead.

Charter Yacht on the Sea of Cortez

The Sea of Cortez, also known as the Gulf of California and home to some of the best marine life on earth, is a must-visit location on your Mexico yacht charter if you want to go diving spectacularly all year long.

The Sea of Cortez, a confined body of water, divides the Mexican mainland from the Baja California peninsula. On a Sea of Cortez yacht charter, you can learn why John Steinbeck felt compelled to write a chronicle of his leisurely excursion here in 1940 and why Jacques Cousteau famously dubbed the watery Arcadia “the world’s aquarium” due to its ecosystem sustaining over 2,900 species of fish and mammals. In fact, it is regarded as such a rich source of speciation that it has been given UNSESCO World Heritage designation.

Learn about the more than 240 islands and islets with desolate white sand beaches, high rocky cliffs, nightclubs, golf courses, and Michelin-starred restaurants. Dive in the turquoise waters’ naturally abundant marine life, including blue whales, sharks, barracuda, wahoo, and marlin.

Mexico is one of Latin America’s most gorgeous and culturally rich nations, and this is its most underestimated cruising ground. From its ancient Mayan and Aztec roots to its modern resurrection as a center for arts and sciences. With a boat hire in Mexico, explore the treasures that are waiting.

The Baja Peninsular and the Sea of Cortez are the center of Mexico’s yacht charter industry. The capital and base for yacht charters, La Paz, situated at the tip of a peninsula that is used for sailing in Baja. The Sea of Cortez has uninhabited beaches, welcoming natives, and fantastic sailing, making it one of the largest pristine yacht charter vacation destinations in the world. A striking contrast of dry red dunes frames the sapphire blue waters on either side. You’ll cruise past exceedingly arid and rough terrain as you enjoy a yacht charter trip, which will make the invitingly pure blue waters seem even more tempting.

You will pass by uninhabited islets where sea lions are lazing around and entertaining themselves. Drop anchor in a pristine bay or beach and take in the breathtaking views from the deck of your charter yacht. There are several things to do, including dive, snorkel, walk, or fish. There is a rich aquatic habitat below the beautiful seas.

Visitors to yacht charters are mesmerized every year by migratory whales, dolphins, and spectacular manta rays. The Baja Peninsular offers the possibility of solitary idyllic days. Toast your own findings as you observe the sky turning pink over the desert in the twilight. Before venturing ashore to see some of La Paz’s best cuisine and nightlife, have a peaceful drink on your charter yacht.

In Baja Mexico, you can charter any of the common types of boats, including motor, sailing, bareboat charter, skippered, crewed, catamaran, power boat, sailboat, luxury yachts, and occasionally even super yachts.

The best time of year to charter a boat is from November to May. Be aware that Baja winds occasionally have a tendency to be a little erratic, which keeps your sailing interesting.

Boating Locations Near Baja California

Activities to do while renting a yacht in the Sea of Cortez

The Sea of Cortez is without a doubt one of the best locations in the world for a sea safari. You may either cruise to Cabo Pulmo, a sizable Marine Protected Area, where you can view whales, both blue and humpback, sharks, and even jumping manta rays, to try and find the big five: mahi-mahi, manta ray, shark, marlin, and sailfish.

The Sea of Cortez is often referred to as the “Galapagos of North America” because it offers close interactions with a variety of marine species. For example, hundreds of sea lions may be seen at Los Islotes, a rocky island north of La Paz.

On dry ground, explore Isla San José, where you can wander through forests of enormous cacti and view remnants from its defunct salt-mining industry, or drive a dune buggy from desert to ocean in Cabos San Lucas. You can even board a helicopter and go wine tasting in the Guadalupe Valley.

La Paz Yacht Rental

The beautiful Sea of Cortez, also known as the Gulf of California, separates La Paz from Mexico at the tip of the Baja California Sur peninsula. The ideal location for a true, pristine sailing vacation is the sea, which has legendary status among sport fishers and divers.

On your La Paz yacht charter, you’ll discover serene turquoise coves, unpolluted deserts, and rough mountain ranges in addition to gorgeous secluded anchorages along more than 100 miles of coastline.

Sailing to Isla San Francisco will bring you to a well-liked anchorage in a crescent-shaped bay that is surrounded by white sand beaches, red cliffs, and pristine waters. Excellent hiking, snorkeling, and fishing are available in this picturesque cove.

Additionally, you have the opportunity to go whale- or dolphin-watching and get up close to these lovely animals. Or you may go swimming with sea lions at Isla Espiritu Santo’s natural aquarium.

In addition to luxury resorts, golf courses, exquisite dining establishments, museums, and restored colonial-era buildings, La Paz’s Marina Costa Baja serves as our base for your sailing trip. La Paz is a memorable place as a result of all of these factors.

Take a sea lion swim

One of the best things to do in La Paz is to take a cruise to the picturesque island of Espiritu Santo, where you can snorkel and swim with playful sea lions. You may take in the breathtaking scenery of the rough red rock islands, birds, and marine life while you’re there. Isla San Francisco hiking

Hike the crest that leads to the summit of the hills that encircle this lovely crescent harbor. Keep your camera handy to record the striking contrasts between the sky, sea, sand, and rock. Walk around the Malecon boardwalk

While sailing La Paz, be sure to check out the picturesque Paseo Alvaro Obregon shoreline. Enjoy the beautiful statues while you stroll around the Malecon Boardwalk stores, and in the evening, take in the breathtaking sunset while trying some of the local cuisines from the food vendors. a t Isla Espiritu Santo, snorkeling

On the island of Espiritu Santo, Cardenal and Candelero offer excellent snorkeling opportunities and should not be missed. After your swim, have a picnic right here on the beach. View the whale sharks as they migrate.

It’s safe to swim with the gentle giant whale sharks in La Paz because they graze on filters. Because of the strict regulations put in place to preserve the animals, you must make your reservations with an authorized local tour operator. We advise you not to pass up the opportunity because it’s one of the top things to do in La Paz.

Yacht Charter Baja – La Paz Itinerary

After 1.5 hours and 8 miles, you will reach La Paz, depart the harbor, and anchor at Puerto Balandra while passing Roca Lobos to see sea lions. There are eight beaches, a salt lagoon, and “El Hongo,” a rock formation that has come to symbolize La Paz, in this lonely, unpopulated coastal area. This area is surrounded by low reddish mountains that occasionally have desert plants and giant cardón cacti. The beaches around the Gulf’s turquoise, blue, and green waters have white sand, which stands out starkly against the red mountains. These seas are home to tens of thousands of vibrant tiny fish, coral, and larger species such as green sharks, dogfish, barracuda, tuna, striped mullet, and “sierra.”

A salt lagoon was formed by the sea waters that periodically came inland, not far from the actual sea. It is bordered by mature mangroves and shallow enough to stroll across. Because of its shallowness and an average temperature of 84F/30C, the water is typically very warm, evaporates quickly, and becomes saltier than ocean water. Small beach eateries (palapas) and locations to rent equipment for water sports do exist, but they have not been developed by the local La Paz population in an effort to maintain the area’s natural beauty.

DAY 2 (ALTERNATIVE)

San Gabriel’s Bahia – Visit San Gabriel (7 miles, 1 hr). either snorkel Rocas Suwanee in San Lorenzo Channel or dive the Salvaterra (a ferry that is submerged 60 feet below the surface). Walk or climb over the island to Playa Bonanza in the afternoon (simple, well-marked trail, about 2 miles one way) (4 miles 0.5 hr).

Galeta Partida to Puerto Ballena – Day of diving or hiking. Visit Isla Gallo and/or Isla Gallina for snorkeling at Puerto Ballena, or dive the Lapas No. 3 wreck (60 feet deep, mast 27 feet below surface) or the 70-foot-deep Fang Ming wreck, which were both intentionally sunk to create reefs. A quick trek along the bay is optional. Sail to Caleta Partida (6 miles, 1 hour) in the late afternoon for beach time, paddle boarding to sea caves on the east coast, snorkeling, a short hike to the top of the bay, and beach crossing. It’s fun to see a remote-control sailboat regatta.

Set off for a hike, a dive, or the beach after breakfast. On the Ensenada Grande off of Isla Partida, lunch will be served. Travel Magazine called this beach the most stunning in Mexico and one of the top 12 beaches in the world. Swim, snorkel, take a tender to the next bay (Las Cuevitas) to see a colony of blue-footed boobies, hike hills with views of the water, and go scuba diving at Rocas Tintorera.

Snorkel and swim in the company of curious and amiable sea lions at Los Islotes. It is a fantastic site to go beachcombing or take a hike along the rocky shore, keeping an eye out for brown pelicans, gulls, roaming great blue herons, and boobies. The area’s rough cliffs and bays were carved deeply into the coastline. You might cruise down the east coast (lunch while underway) and anchor in Playa la Bonanza, depending on the weather (12 miles, 1.5 – 2hrs). Enjoy a leisurely afternoon stroll along the beach, which is a roughly 2-mile-long crescent-shaped stretch of white sand. You may even head back along the west coast to any of your favorite former anchorages.

Playa Bonanza or Puerto Ballandra — Spend the morning at anchor to take advantage of the water activities if you are in Playa Bonanza. Divers can dive the Salvaterra shipwreck in the San Lorenzo channel by hiking across the island to Bahia San Gabriel (simple, well-marked walk, 2 kilometers each way). If on the west coast, spend the morning at anchor while engaging in water activities. In the afternoon, sail the 10 miles (or 1.5 hours) to Puerto Ballandra, or return to the marina in the evening to be ready for a night on the dock or a meal in La Paz.

La Paz: Return to the marina (8 miles, 1.5 hours) following breakfast and explore La Paz on land.

Sea of Cortez

Other destination.

sea of cortez yacht charter

Serene, wild and otherworldly are all apt descriptions for the dazzling display of nature that is found in the Sea of Cortez, otherwise known as the Gulf of California. If you’re a lover of nature, wildlife and off-the-grid adventure, sailing the Sea of Cortez may be just the paradise you’ve been dreaming about.

Located to the west of mainland Mexico, along the Baja Peninsula, the Sea of Cortez is a wonderland of contrasts. Electric blue waters sparkle against rugged red bluffs, dolphins and manta rays leap majestically against a backdrop of desert sands and the spectacular views while hiking are just as striking as the underwater playground found when snorkeling.

In this destination, tourist traps and crowds are far from sight, replaced by secluded beaches, stunning vistas and a stunning diverse marine ecosystem that’s guaranteed to deliver an up-close-and-personal wildlife experience. The deep, clear waters are home to countless species of whales and dolphins, as well as colonies of playful sea lions and marine turtles. Jacque Cousteau even famously referred to the Sea of Cortez as “the world’s aquarium”.

Upon sailing away from the Baja Peninsula mainland, you’ll experience an energizing “digital detox” like no other. Leave the internet and email behind in exchange for nature’s perfectly simple pleasures — lively sea breezes, fresh-caught fish on the grill, smiles from friendly locals and unrivaled nightly star-gazing.

Read on to learn everything you need to know about sailing the Sea of Cortez.

Bountiful Marine Wildlife

If wildlife encounters are at the top of your list, the Sea of Cortez islands will definitely not disappoint. Snorkelers are likely to come across moray eels, turtles, manta rays and a wide variety of tropical fish. Large pods of long-nosed dolphins — sometimes numbering in the hundreds — can often be spotted diving, leaping and even surfing in the wake of your boat.

A much-sought-after encounter in the Sea of Cortez is the opportunity to swim alongside a colony of sea lions. Sea lions are curious, friendly and adorable and you’ll love swimming with them. A large colony is found on Los Islotes, with professional tours leaving from the town of La Paz. Summer is a great time to visit, when the water is warm and more tranquil, but the largest populations of sea lions and playful pups are found in the spring. Don’t forget an underwater camera for full Instagram bragging rights!

Whale sharks are another favorite with visitors. These plankton-eating gentle giants are the largest fish in the world, reaching lengths of 40ft or more. Whale sharks are known to come to the Bay of La Paz between October and February each year. Swimming with whale sharks is regulated to protect the animals, so a licensed tour operator is required for swimming with these magnificent creatures.

Culinary Delights of the Baja Peninsula

While dining opportunities may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of sailing the Sea of Cortez, the Baja Peninsula offers foodies a delightfully simple, fresh and wholesome menu with a staggering array of fresh-caught seafood, including tuna, octopus, clams and lobster. An arid, tropical climate adds to the unique taste and variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, such as avocado, mango and guava.

The small town of La Paz offers a surprising selection of restaurants with international cuisine, thanks to the diverse population of expats who’ve settled here throughout the years. But of course you can’t go wrong with the traditional Mexican fare found here. Shrimp tacos, fresh-made guacamole and margaritas are all on the must-try list while in La Paz, and excellent cantinas are plentiful.

While sailing the Sea of Cortez, the fishermen among you will want to fish from your boat for the very freshest seafood possible. Grill aboard your boat and enjoy unmatched dining under the stars paired with a frosty cerveza.

The Sea of Cortez Islands – Top Anchorages

sea of cortez yacht charter

La Paz – Cruising the Sea of Cortez begins in this vibrant capital city of Baja California Sur. The beautiful CostaBaja Resort Marina is found here and is the perfect location to begin your sailing adventure. The heart of scenic La Paz is the malecón, or seaside boardwalk, which extends for miles along the waterfront, dotted with charming sculptures, palms and street vendors.

Isla San Francisco – This postcard-perfect anchorage is a cruiser favorite, with its long stretch of horseshoe-shaped beach, amazingly clear water and jaw-dropping views of the Baja mountain range.  Hikers can trek the ridge trail that snakes along the hills at one end of the bay to reach the top for stunning views of bright blue-green sea on both sides of the ridge.

Santo Bahia San Gabriel , Isla Espirtu Santo

This large picturesque bay offers great kayaking, snorkeling, hiking and white sand beaches surrounded by rugged, cactus-studded, red volcanic cliffs. Follow the trail across the island to the eastern shore to find Playa Bonanza, one of the most beautiful beaches on the island.

Thoughtfully plan your provisions   – La Paz is the place to provision. The town has everything from quaint open-air markets to large supermarkets. Be sure to buy everything you’ll need for your charter before you depart the marina. Most importantly, stock up with lots of bottled water! Once out on the gulf, there are few stores or restaurants to be found, aside from local fisherman who may occasionally stop by peddling their catch of the day.

Packing for your charter – As with all yacht charters, careful packing can greatly enhance your trip. Be sure to bring along bug spray, a wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen for sun protection. Sturdy footwear is recommended for hiking the many spectacular desert trails of the Sea of Cortez islands.

Prepare to unplug – WiFi and internet access are available in and around La Paz, but after leaving the marina there is generally no service available. But sailing, swimming and stargazing more than make up for the loss.

Appreciate the friendly locals – Take some time to interact with the local people — and other yacht charterers — that you encounter along your journey. Part of the charm of visiting faraway places is connecting with people with lifestyles very different from our own. Buy what they’re selling, offer them a beer, and help each other out for a more enriching and rewarding experience.
