Modern daysailers

1. saffier se 33 ud.

Saffier Yachts now has eight designs between 21ft and 37ft. The investment and knowhow the Hennevanger brothers have put into the production facility really shows too – the vacuum-infused builds and finish quality are top class.

Saffier builds seaworthy designs , tests all new models thoroughly in the North Sea and ensures its yachts can be sailed easily single-handedly.

best-daysailer-yachts-Saffier-33-SE

Launched in 2014, the Saffier Se 33 is a sporty design but with a practical self-draining cockpit and optional solid sprayhood, which help it handle most weather conditions. It has a fast underwater shape, a generous sailplan and a fixed carbon bowsprit. The extra-large cockpit features 2m benches and a folding transom and there is space enough for four to sleep below.

Saffier’s brand new Se 27 also looks like a seriously fun design and has been averaging speeds in the mid-teens with the kite up, clocking over 20 knots in its early trials this spring.

Prices for the Se 33 start at €114,500 (ex. VAT).

2. Domani S30

The S30, launched in 2018, is Belgian company Domani’s first model – a trailable sportsboat designed to be comfortable, fast and beautiful, says founder Michael Goddaert.

Inspired by Riva’s Aquarama motor boat , it has a large minimalist cockpit, spacious aft sunbed and a classy-looking compact interior. The narrow-beamed S30 weighs only 1,700kg, is offered with a long, two-part carbon rig, and has an electric drive as standard. A Lounge version is being developed which is similar to the Tofinou 9.7 in terms of deck layout.

Price ex. VAT: €88,000.

best-daysailer-yachts-Black-Pepper-Code-0.1

3. Black Pepper Code 0.1

Those lucky enough to have sailed at Les Voiles de St Tropez may have seen these neo-classic daysailers from chic brand Black Pepper.

As well as this range of Code-branded daysailers/weekenders, the yard has just launched a new Sam Manuard-designed, scow-bowed IMOCA 60 for Armel Tripon’s Vendée Globe campaign.

The original Code 0, by Marc Lombard, is a high-performance dayboat with a distinctive squared coachroof, which is built light in carbon and epoxy with half its displacement in the keel bulb.

A new Code 0.1 version (pictured) launched last year, and is available in Open and Spirit (performance/regatta) versions.

Price ex. VAT: £148,000.

best-daysailer-yachts-A-Yachts-A27

4. A-Yachts A27 / A33

A-Yachts founder. Michael Gilhofer helped to develop the original B30 (pictured below) and was distributor for B-Yachts in Germany for 17 years. He commissioned the in-demand Lorenzo Argento, who formerly worked with Luca Brenta, to design a new range of luxury daysailers built in Slovenia and finished in Austria.

The first two A-Yachts models (the A27 is pictured above) are focused on performance daysailing, whereas B-Yachts has gone for more cruising comfort below. An exciting new model, the A39, is due for launch in 2021.

Prices ex. VAT: A27 €98,500, A33 €215,000.

best-daysailer-yachts-B-Yachts-B30

5. B-Yachts B30 / B34

The Brenta B30 is the iconic Italian daysailer. A real looker to keep berthed at your Portofino residence, it has a lightweight carbon/epoxy build and a high ballast ratio, for tantalising light airs sailing. B-Yachts is the brand that took the daysailing concept to the limit with the fiendishly indulgent (and very white) B60, which we tested, open-mouthed, back in 2008.

Although stagnant for some years, the company was acquired by Luca Brenta’s cousin Alberto Castiglioni in late 2018. Brenta, along with designer Alessia Lee, has worked up the design for a new B34 model due to launch this year, and they are now working on a B40.

The B30 (above) is now a modern classic, with more than 40 built, but the refreshed company has made some upgrades including a new rudder profile, fixed bowsprit, revised deck gear, a more functional interior and the option for an electric engine. But it’s still got those killer lines.

Prices ex. VAT: B30 €118,000, B34 €190,000.

best-daysailer-yachts-Esse-330

6. Esse 330

This is the sixth model from Josef Schuchter’s yard on Lake Zurich, which builds fast, stiff and sporty designs. The new 330 is the first Esse that offers the ability for weekend/overnight sailing. Schuchter told us it is designed more for pleasure sailing than racing but has the same performance as the yard’s 990, using a 1m shorter mast and with greater stability and comfort.

Umberto Felci designed the 330 with a self-tacking jib, a carbon deck-stepped mast with no backstay and a high ballast ratio to help ensure it can easily be sailed short-handed. A lifting keel reduces draught to 1.55m and an electric drive is offered.

Price ex. VAT: €134,000.

best-daysailer-yachts-Flax-27

A plumb stem and square coachroof give an alluring pilot classic style to this Judel/Vrolijk design, but it is the materials from which it is crafted that are most intriguing. Built by Bremen-based Greenboats, the flax (plant) or linen (fibre) is vacuum-infused with bio epoxy and can be given a clearcoat finish to help show off the fibres.

The focus is on weight-saving for this performance daysailer, using recycled PET as the core material. The deck is made from cork, the ropes are made entirely from recycled plastic bottles and the sails are recyclable.

Price ex. VAT, ready to sail: €126,000.

Modern-classic daysailers

8. eagle 38.

The Boersma brothers founded Leonardo Yachts in the northern part of the Netherlands to build top quality gentleman’s daysailers and weekenders.

Its range of gorgeous designs are inspired by the timeless lines and overhangs of the J Class , but with modern appendages.

The new Hoek-designed Eagle 38 is the smallest of a range that now extends to 70ft. It is devised for easy handling, with jib winches in reach of the helmsman/tiller, in a deep self-draining cockpit that can seat six in comfort.

The varnished mahogany interior can sleep three and includes cooking facilities and a neatly hidden toilet.

Price ex. VAT: €177,500.

best-daysailer-yachts-Wallynano-MKII

9. Wally Nano MkII

Wally stunned us with the unveiling of its incomparable Nano in 2009. The Andre Hoek-designed masterpiece certainly elevated the standard of extravagance (and price) for a daysailer. This Wally Nano MkII model released eight years later is a refined version of the achingly cool design, which marries Italian styling with Dutch workmanship and ingenuity.

A pilot cutter-influenced plumb bow, bowsprit and low, squared coachroof set off a retro style, finished by an elegantly overhanging counter. These classic lines meet contemporary construction and attention to detail at Joop Doomernik’s traditional Dragon building yard. The top class composite work includes a keel grid built from 33 layers of carbon. Believe me, the result on the water is a truly intoxicating ride, both upwind and down!

Price ex. VAT: €390,000.

10. Rustler 33

The Stephen Jones design has the elegant lines and overhangs of the Cornish yard’s earlier Rustler 24, but with a comfortable handmade interior that makes it enticing to overnight on too – there is a proper heads compartment including wet hanging area.

With the addition of stanchions, this becomes a Class B offshore yacht. It’s a stiff boat to sail with a deep, dry cockpit, in which it is comfortable to sit, perch on the chunky coaming or stand to handle the tiller.

Rustler says recent clients for the Rustler 33 are ordering them with carbon masts and electric engines.

Price ex. VAT: £165,000.

best-daysailer-yachts-Morris-29

11. Morris 29

Fusing S&S lines with modern lightweight materials such as carbon and epoxy, the Morris 29 is a quintessential daysailer that’s easy to rig and maintain, a witch to sail and is as handsome as they come.

And there’s a deep, long cockpit and comfortable saloon below to keep any guests content while you hog the tiller. Now built by Hinckley and priced from US$266,500.

best-daysailer-yachts-alerion-33

12. Alerion 28 / 33

Cleverly marketed as ‘the 90-minute’ getaway, the iconic Alerion daysailer fleet, from 20-33ft, is designed to get people afloat easily and with the most enjoyment possible. Above is the Alerion 33.

Often seen sporting optional Hoyt jib booms, the models are easy and a delight to sail and have inviting and well-finished interiors.

Rarely do beauty, speed and single-handed ease combine this fluidly and successfully. Prices are available on application only.

best-daysailer-yachts-Friendship-40

13. Friendship 36 / 40

The elegantly timeless look of the Friendship 40, its classic lines, including pronounced tumblehome and wineglass counter, are by Rhode Island’s Ted Fontaine. A Friendship’s deep cockpit and wonderfully inviting and well-appointed interior invite you to sail on through the weekend and beyond.

Fontaine says both the 36 and 40 are still available to order, but at top prices: “The Friendship 40 would be built by Yachting Developments in New Zealand where the moulds are presently stored,” (priced in the region of US $1,350,000).

“And the Friendship 36 is being offered as a cold-moulded wood epoxy built boat that would be built by Rockport Marine in Maine – the yard that built the first 36.”

Saffier SL 46 first look: a daysailer ready for fun sailing

  • March 19, 2024

This is new ground for Saffier, but it looks to be a top-quality yacht for proper cruising and fun sailing, if the numbers and Saffier’s track record are anything to go by.

Side angle graphic of the Saffier SL 46

Dutch yard Saffier has a reputation for stylish, quick daysailers. While their origins lie in their smaller 6.5m and 8m cabin boats, the yard has seen real growth in its SE range, standing for Saffier Elegance.

These boats are highly refined daysailers that merely nod to the possibility of staying on board overnight if required.

This spaciousness is achieved by pushing the helm forward into the boat’s centre for fun sailing .

Graphic of the Med Version's Aft. It has two wheels, a wooden deck, and sleek interior.

The Med version has moveable benches and an open transom. Photo: Yachting Monthly

The SE 27 and SE 33 have been around for a while now, and have impressed with lively performance, while being easy to single hand.

Other cruising yachts in the range include the newer  SE 24 Lite , which offers a sportier experience.

The  SE 37 Lounge  does just that, too, with a vast cockpit and a very comfortable lounge below, with enough space to boil a kettle or pop champagne. The SL 46 ( Saffier Luxury ) is Saffier’s first foray into large cruising yachts.

While the boat retains the distinctive helm position ahead of the mainsheet and large lounging area aft, the SL 46 is much more on a par with other performance cruisers this size.

S tyling is distinctly modern, using clean, minimal lines and ‘luxury materials’ to  create ‘wow factor’ amid a sensible layout.

How to buy a boat: your guide to buying a yacht

The process of buying a sailing yacht can sometimes be long-winded and stressful, especially if it’s your first time considering…

The Med and North daysailers

The boat comes in two variants – Med and North in recognition of where most of their clients are likely to cruise.

The big difference between the two daysailers is the wide open transom with easy access to the water of the Med version.

On the North version, the aft deck has been raised to create a tender garage beneath cushioned lounging space.

The performance promises to be lively for these cruising yachts.

Vacuum- infused vinylester resin over a Divinycell core has kept the weight under 11 tonnes with a 30% ballast ratio in a 2.2m cast iron keel and a lead bulb for a lower centre of gravity.

Signature Saffier Styling

Below decks, there’s  a spacious galley, large saloon with chart table, and what looks like good amounts of stowage.

An owner’s cabin forward is huge, and includes a dressing table and sink, though no heads, sharing instead the aft heads with the two double cabins.

Saffier SE 27 : A roadster for the water in the YACHT test

Alexander Worms

 ·  01.06.2024

Yes, it runs. From a speed of around 9 knots, the Saffier leaves its wave system and glides. She does this in a very controlled and good-natured manner

The measured values for testing the Saffier SE 27

The saffier se 27 in detail, price and shipyard, yacht review of the saffier se 27, video of the saffier se 27.

"Watch out, the wind is coming," says shipyard boss Dennis Hennevanger. He should know: The waters off IJmuiden are his playground. He knows his way around here like no other. And indeed: a few seconds later, the south-easterly wind picks up. 16, 18, 20 knots. The Saffier SE 27 thanks him with propulsion. The 63 square metre gennaker pulls. Drop off, onto the wave, and off goes the express train. The lugge hurries up, stumbles high, and even the 10 is left astern seemingly effortlessly.

Admittedly: The waves help, but there is no question that the Saffier would glide even without them. A mirror-smooth waterline at the transom and never the feeling that she is somehow sticking or doesn't want to. No, every gust, every shred of wind gives the ship legs. It has to be stiff and light at the same time.

A little less pre-balance on the rudder suits the concept better

The shipyard achieves this by using vacuum infusion construction with a core of Divinycell foam. A deep, slender L-shaped keel does the rest. It carries the lead ballast, which is very heavy at 47 per cent, very low down. This lowers the centre of gravity, which means that the boat hardly heels over in gusts, but bravely stretches its ample rig towards the wind.

However, with the large orange foresail, the helmsman has to react in good time to approaching wind fields and drop off sharply, otherwise the Saffier will be pulled into the wind. This is not dramatic, and she catches herself again. Nevertheless, full control is better. And faster. The shipyard wants to respond to this by changing the geometry of the rudder blade. That should remedy the situation. "I think we will then also provide a little less pre-balancing. Then she will have a little pressure on the rudder," explains Dennis Hennevanger. That will certainly look good on the ship.

Most read articles

saffier yachts reviews

This is because almost no pressure can be felt on the wind and the rudder is very neutral. This is generally slower than a slightly tilted rudder, which provides lift, and is also tedious for less experienced sailors because it requires a lot of concentration. And who wants to be constantly aiming at the lines on a relaxed outing on a Sunday afternoon when the wind is up? You'd rather have a wind edge that's easy to find. The positive message: even if you give away a few tenths of a knot, the speed of the Saffier is still enough to give most other boats a run for their money.

Pleasing values

In the present 16 to 20 knots of wind, she reaches a height of around 35 degrees to the true wind. This is enormous, but almost to be expected for a ship of this design. The measured value is slightly above what the polar diagrams say, but off IJmuiden it is always blowing from all possible directions. There was also a slight swell.

The speed was clear. A very decent 6.5 knots was possible. And that with the self-tacking jib. A 110 per cent headsail would be an option for light-winded inland waters. Off IJmuiden, the self-tacking jib was completely sufficient on the test day.

The boat runs at the reefing limit, good for testing. The described neutrality is also evident when there is a lot of pressure in the rig. However, this can be reduced to a tolerable level using various trimming options. Outhaul, a strong backstay, a kicker: it's all there. The traveller is also available, but part of the aft cushions have to be removed before it can be used. This is a little impractical, and it works quite well without overflow to leeward.

At 1.75 metres tall, the tester found it somewhat difficult to find a comfortable riding position. Behind the bike, the distance to the leeward bench is around 20 centimetres too great for relaxed sitting with support. There is also a nice spot on the coaming.

Control and access to the controls are maximised there. Only the support on the steering column is tricky, as it is very smooth. And the consequences of a slipping foot are rather dramatic. However, an anti-slip strip on both sides of the Jefa column helps to ensure a good grip. During the test, shipyard boss Hennevanger decided to install a footrest behind the wheel so that smaller people can also sail in a relaxed manner. Short decision-making processes - one of the advantages of a small and, moreover, fine shipyard.

Refreshing sailing

The beauty of a boat like the Saffier is that it is fun both upwind and downwind. On the way up, it can be circled right along the edge, and in future, with a different blade geometry, it will be even easier. And the upwind speed (VMG) is quite generous due to the good height. Thanks to the large sails, it is also quite fast back in the direction the wind is blowing. But that's even more fun.

Dropping off, raising the gennaker, luffing up and searching for waves - a delight thanks to the control provided by the single wheel. The sheet can even be placed on one of the two optional e-winches. As both drums can be operated from both sides, the crew or helmsman can easily readjust the large sail from windward. The Harken winches can both furl and close-hauled. It couldn't be easier.

And so it's suddenly there, the perfect moment. The boat is travelling at a relaxed 8 to 9 knots, the sun is shining, and a gust comes. Drop off, hit the wave exactly, and off goes the turbopost. The log indicates just under 12 knots, and that for quite a while. This is easy to call up and can also be achieved by less experienced helmsmen. That's how daysailing works. Great!

The day before, the wind was much stronger. That's when the shipyard boys took their new baby out and reached around 20 knots, they say. You could almost believe it. The shaky mobile phone videos also prove it. That is impressive.

No compromises?

So she can sail. The benches are not exactly long at 1.60 metres, but two adults can easily sit next to each other. And behind the helmsman there is a spacious sunbathing area. It has a small coaming on the sides and is therefore reasonably safe to lie on when travelling.

However, it is a bit of a shame that a bathing ladder is only included with the Saffier for an extra charge. A real day boat that will also be used for swimming should have more in stock than the ridiculous fabric ladder in the tin to fulfil the CE standard.

Keyword surcharge: If you want to have fun with the gennaker, you can certainly order the carbon bowsprit including blocks and two additional winches as well as the sail itself. This will then cost a few more euros. The wooden-look deck from Esthec is also not standard; the shipyard will quote the price for this on request. The same applies to a trailer. This is almost a must, because with a total weight including trailer of around 2500 kilograms, the Saffier can easily be towed on holiday behind a powerful vehicle.

Suitable drive concept

It is a seemingly bold step to offer the Saffier with an electric drive as standard. The diesel is available for an extra charge, which could well be a break with familiar habits for some customers. But: firstly, the target group for the SE line tends to be innovative anyway and often already drives an electric car privately, so the step towards an electric drive on board is a logical one. And secondly, the drive fits in perfectly with the concept: easy to operate, virtually maintenance-free and therefore worry-free and with a sufficient range - after all, you want to sail with the Saffier because that's exactly what it's made for. And if necessary, you can even sail to the harbour.

Consistently implemented

So an almost perfect boat? Perhaps. Because the compromises are hidden below deck. Yes, there is a toilet, but you can only sit on it in cramped conditions. Yes, there are four berths, but they are narrow and quite hard. The cushions are rather thin and therefore firm, as interior height was sacrificed for the pretty lines. This is understandable for a daysailer. If you are looking for sleeping space, the shipyard's more comfort-orientated SC line is for you.

The lack of ventilation in the cabin will also be acceptable for those who only spend the night on board occasionally. A hatch in the foredeck is of course possible on request. The concessions to a sporty daysailer have therefore been hidden below deck.

And it is precisely this consistency that makes the boat so good. In the shipyard's logic, SC line for comfortable sailing, SE line for more performance-oriented sailing, it all makes sense. It remains light and therefore agile and a pleasure to sail. The cabin serves as storage space, for changing after bathing and when the bladder pinches.

Want to sleep? Better in a holiday home or hotel. And if it's absolutely necessary once a season, for a trip with the sailing club or something similar, then it's still possible.

In fact, the Saffier SE 27 is not sold under 100000 Euro change hands. But then with fine cloth and all the comfort you could wish for in a daysailer. The price will not deter anyone, because the boat is either a fine addition to a much more expensive holiday home or a replacement for a larger and more expensive yacht or tender of a superyacht.

Incidentally, the bike also costs a surcharge. As expected, many customers will order it. However, a tiller would certainly be a good addition to the boat, as it increases the perceived agility even further. And that is exactly what you are looking for in a daysailer.

Yacht Feature- Saffier Se 23, European Yacht of the Year

by Nancy Knudsen on 2 Apr 2011

saffier yachts reviews

On 22nd January this year, the Saffier Se 23 beat the Corsair 750 DASH, the J 95, the Knierim P33 and the M 34 as the European Yacht of the Year in the ‘special yacht’ class. Dennis and Dean Hennevanger received the prize on behalf of the company. So what made 10 journalists from European magazines, choose the Saffier 23 for this prestigious prize? You could say because of the quality, the harmonic lines, the great sailing performance and its silent electric engine, but the new Saffier 23 is just a great small yacht to enjoy a nice day of sailing with friends or family, but also to finish with results while racing around the cans. There are other top features as well, so read on, after watching this video which was made BEFORE the yacht won the prestigious award: Classical influences: The Saffier 23 ft might be a modern build yacht but it also has beautiful harmonic lines with classical influences. The modern underwater hull has low displacement and the combination with a state of the art rig will give her striking performances while looking graceful on the water. With her narrow entry bow the Saffier 23 ft cuts easily through choppy waves while maintaining her speed. Performance: A lot of thought has been given to the hull lines transcending from the modern bow to the classic stern. Under 10 % heel she will use her full water length sailing up wind and perform above her polarities. Downwind she will match her polarities up to 15 knots of wind. The keel is a fix modern shaped bulbkeel of 1 m depth which ensures a high stability curve. This will increase the comfort on board and will ensure that the Saffier 23 ft is seaworthy. Engine: A unique point of the Saffier Se 23 is the electrical propulsion. As silent as sailing, much cleaner then a fuel driven engine and minimal maintenance. The Saffier Se 23 ft can move forward for 4 hours under electric propulsion. A second battery can be added for longer voyages. The battery’s are very easily accessible and can be charged by shore power. Additionally the can be charged by solar panel or by simply replacing the lightweight battery (14 kg!!) and charge back home. Hull and Keel: With her narrow entry bow the Saffier Se 23 ft cuts easily through choppy waves while maintaining her speed. A lot of thought has been given to the hull lines transcending from the modern bow to the classic stern. Under 10 % heel she will use her full water length sailing up wind and perform above her polarities. Downwind she will match her polarities up to 15 knots of wind. The keel is a fix modern shaped bulbkeel of 1 m depth which ensures a high stability curve. This will increase the comfort on board and will ensure that the Saffier Se 23 ft is seaworthy. Cockpit for six: The cockpit is very large with two ergonomic benches which extend al the way to the stern. Because of this there is a large area to sit or, for that matter, to lay down with your back comfortably resting to the end of the stern. The cockpit area can fit six adults. For the anchor there is an anchor well which is integrated in the deck. When you want to sail more sportily the deck and cockpit coming is designed to sit over it comfortably. Sails: The Saffier Se 23 ft can easily be sailed by one person. The helmsman has the tiller, mainsheet and the sheet of the self tacking jib right at their hands. Central behind the coach roof there are 2 winches easy accessible to hoist the mainsails and unfurl the jib The furling system of the jib is placed underneath deck. All lines can be stowed away in the sides of the cockpit ensuring a rope free cockpit floor. All lines run underneath the roof or the deck. A genaker can be set on a genaker pole. For the more performance orientated sailors a( optional) light genua (non self tacking) and spinnaker can be set. Room for sleeping two: Underneath the front deck there is sleeping space for two for that hideaway weekend, and can be used to stuff your sail and clothing wardrobe. Under the decksides there is enough space for fenders, mooring lines and stuff you want in your immediate surroundings. In the back bench there is a hatch for additional storage.

Dutch class and comfort come together in a small but fun package.

I say “could be in the running” because to really attract me, the styling of this design would need to have a bit more pizzazz. I’m not too keen on the long overhangs. I know a lot of you like the look of overhangs but to me they just look like lost waterline length. I find the hull profile a bit unusual in that it is really deep forward then almost kinks up towards the bow where it appears to kink again about halfway up the stem. To my eye the look is awkward. That said, the photos of the boat sailing show a nicely proportioned boat with an attractive spring to the sheer.

The rig is fractional with an on centerline bowsprit that can retract or be removed. The SA/D is a healthy 22.93. The single spreaders are slightly swept. There is a masthead “flicker” to pull the backstay away from the extended roach of the semi fathead main. The mainsheet leads to a “barney post” on the cockpit sole. The cockpit looks very comfortable with long seats and deep seatbacks.

The jib is self-tacking and sheeted to a short track on the raised portion of the foredeck. I have designed a few self-tacking jibs that lead to a track and I have found that track needs to be as wide as possible. If not, as you bear off you cannot change the lead position of the jib car and you end up with a leach that is curled inboard. I can see this perfectly in one of the photos the Saffier shop provided me. You can get around this if you use a clew fitting with multiple holes in it. But this requires changing the jib sheet from one hole to another and that’s cumbersome. My preference would have been to get rid of or at least shorten the raised portion of the deck and then have the jib track run all the way out to the toerail.

This is a yachty-looking small keelboat that should have great appeal as a daysailer.

The Saffier SE 27 is undeniably a head-turner, with easy, graceful lines.
