This is a fun two hour cruise up down and back on the river. They do a lunch and dinner cruise. Lunch was a sample of local foods that you will find throughout your visit.

riverboat city of new orleans

So I was hoping this was going to be a romantic dinner and view of the city of New Orleans but I was greatly disappointed. They started boarding at 6pm sharp, no major issues. Depending on your dinner time (we selected the 7pm upon reservation) they told us what level we could go to. We went up to the top level where they did have a live jazz band. They were really good, and a bar where we could purchase drinks while we wait for our dinner time. That was probably the best part of the evening. For the record...you're docked the entire time you're eating dinner. There's no trip up and down the Mississippi until about 1.5 hours in. Now. To the part that had me most unimpressed...we went down to the 1st level for dinner and were immediately seated and told our server would be with us. About 20 min later our server finally arrived. I wasn't sure how this went so we asked, do we order etc. Well, it's buffet style so we went up and got "food". That was the WORST food I've ever tasted. It was so bad the only thing I ate was the banana foster and bread pudding desert. The gumbo literally made me want to vomit and tasted sour. After that "meal" we decided to go up and out on deck to enjoy the view. Was it worth it ...NO. If you're still interested in doing it, do NOT pay for the dinner. It's straight trash!

Awesome fun great time with family and friends totally worth it. Very awesome to see the views of New Orleans and if you choose to do the food like we did it was delicious tradition or New Orleans style food.

We booked the 7pm jazz cruise. After reading reviews we decided the food was not going to be worth the extra price and would detract from our enjoyment of the jazz and the sights. That was a good choice. Although the food on the buffet looked good, we wanted to spend our time outside and enjoying the sight seeing and jazz. We boarded at 6:20 and we were surprised at how few seats were left. We did get a good spot still by the jazz band on the top deck in the back. The band was already playing (probably started at 6 when people could board). We enjoyed the bad and got a couple of drinks The first disappointment we had was that the drinks were subpar. The description of a mojito on the menu sounded so good. Rum, lime, passion fruit juice.... Unfortunately they added none of those things. It was a canned mojito. I watched them open the can and pour it in. Yuck! It taked like club soda. That drink was $9 and was the only one I bought after that disappointment. After the cruise launched, we were able to get a breeze going and the temperature was much more bearable. We were in the sun and it was 100 degrees. Water was $2 a bottle and was very necessary. The band stopped playing when we launched and they told us they were taking a 5 minute break which would be 45 minutes for us(not funny). A narrator talked us through the history and sights we saw along the way until the point where we turned around to come back. There was a good view of the sunset from where we sat. The next disappointment was the band. Although they were good, they only played from 6-7, they dont play on your trip down the river, then they played a few minutes and took another 15 minute break. I am pretty sure they didn't play more than 40 minutes of the cruise itself. Not what I expected from a jazz cruise. On top of that, during their play time, they begged for tips after every song. It is okay to mention tips maybe 3 times during the cruise, but if they are getting paid so little that they have to beg (it was significant) between every song, maybe the cruise company is not paying them adequately and should up their pay and limit the number of times they can ask about tips. Overall. I did like the cruise, but you should be aware of what you are getting.

The band plays 6-7, and then breaks until the boat is 7.5 miles downriver where the boat turns around. Then they play another 2 sets until they dock. What concerns us most about your review is the actions of the band. This has been sent to band management as that is not acceptable actions for either of our bands. Thank you for alerting us to that.

Nice daytime sail. Narration was interesting . . Lunch was lousy. Fried fish, some kind of sausage, weird rice and red beans slop. Small square of bread pudding tasted better than it looked. Save your dime and eat elsewhere. You can just book the trip without doing the lunch. Jazz band played, they were very good

My wife and I went on the Sunday brunch jazz cruise on the City of New Orleans. The brunch was excellent and the service was superb. Adam, our server, deserves high praise and went above and beyond. Great views of the city and good jazz music by a live band.

A group of us recently experienced the evening jazz cruise while in town. The boarding process was very easy and since we didn't purchase the dinner package we were sent up to the 3rd and 4th decks. The 3rd deck has indoor and outdoor space while the 4th deck is all outdoor. Before starting our tour we were given some facts about the boat and the river and then we were off. The cruise heads down the river 6 miles and then turns around to head back. We enjoyed how quiet and peaceful sitting outside on the decks were. Some of our group had a great time dancing to the band who sounded great. The bar never had a big line and had a nice selection of drinks and snacks to choose from. Overall we had a good time and would like to visit again during the day to try a sightseeing tour.

Aubrie - thanks for the great review of the evening cruise! We appreciate it.

We weren't quite sure what to expect, but we had a 5 star experience and this was one of the highlights of our trip to New Orleans. Awesome day for a riverboat ride - worst part was standing in line to get on the boat! We signed up for the Fall Ya'll package which included drinks and a taste of New Orleans lunch - so worth it! I had seen reviews complaining about the food - but hey - we are foodies and our food was AMAZING. We were served almost as soon as we sat down - fish was tasty, red beans and rice and jambalaya were all good and hot. Nice little bread pudding for dessert too. The drinks were generous and the live 3 pc band playing jazz on the top deck was wonderful and entertaining. Really a lovely overall experience and would highly recommend if you want to slow things down from the hustle and bustle of the french quarter.

I took the evening jazz cruise on the City of New Orleans. I'm not interested in eating on a boat in New Orleans when there are so many great restaurants, so I chose the non-dinner option. It was good to get there early and get on board, though they were having technical problems with the bar on the top level for a while, so I just waited until later to get a drink. The band (located on the top level but piped throughout the ship) was wonderful (though their breaks were overlong). Fortunately, while on break, jazz muzak broke the silence. The music and drinks were nice, but the real joy was the leisurely paddleboat ride down the Mississippi under a full moon, seeing the barges and other tour boats, and then watching the fog roll in as we returned to the dock. There are plenty of chairs and places to sit and watch the world go by. Bring a jacket or sweater because it gets a little cool in the boat, and be aware that the deck gets slick, so walk carefully.

Thanks Pete for the great review

The highlight of an evening spent on the City of New Orleans is not the food or the music, or dancing, but the ride itself down the mighty Mississippi that is guided by a voice over the loud speakers. Our tour guide was funny, informative, and a great orator! We did the dinner cruise, which was in all ways but one, less than stellar. The buffet style food was nothing to write home about with over cooked pasta, congealed, dry chicken, green beans that lacked flavor and were also too long in a steam table. The bread was hard and dry. The salad had a beautiful selection of greens but little else, two grape tomatoes, and some vinaigrette that lacked in seasoning. The only thing worth eating was the gumbo. It was amazing and full of flavor. If only it had more than the base and rice in it. Perhaps some andouille sausage, chicken, shrimp, onions or peppers. The dessert was bananas foster which was yum! If the tour line was smart they'd change directions and serve a better salad, nix the buffet, and serve a large bowl of well made original gumbo with fresh bread. The food cost would be the same and their patrons would enjoy a real Cajun meal that tastes good, not to mention the food waste would greatly reduce. The meal service itself was chaotic. Lots of staff running around trying to get tables set and organized and the buffet ready, but the room lacked leadership and several staff members could be heard arguing amongst themselves. Probably not the best representation for a tour. The boat staff at the bars and all around the vessel were extremely kind and friendly. I did notice one young man in uniform help an elderly woman up a set of stairs. That is what I call service from the heart. I watched as he walked up to her on her second step and offered his arm. He was taught well and didn't need to be told. He just served. Well done. The music was wonderful, the only complaint I have is there was nowhere for dancing, which I truly had hoped to do. Overall, we'd definitely return for the experience, however we'd forgo the dinner the next trip.

If you are considering purchasing tourist discount packages, keep in mind that some of these cruises are included at no additional cost in several New Orleans tourist attraction discount passes .

The two most popular cruises are aboard the Creole Queen Paddlewheeler and Steamboat Natchez (details below), but you can hop on a ferry for just a few dollars.

Each offers a variety of cruises to choose from.

We narrowed down our favorites and compiled a list that describes each trip based on experience type, ticket price, and duration.

NATCHEZ STEAMBOAT

The Natchez Steamboat is the ninth boat with the name.

The current boat boasts modern safety mechanisms within a classic, exquisite oak exterior.

It was recently rennovated and is back to cruising down the Mississippi River on a daily basis!

Steamboat Natchez Historical Cruise

Take part in her adventure with daily two-hour jazz cruises, including a daytime cruise or an evening cruise . You can cruise with or without lunch or dinner.

Listen to the Captain and crew, some of whom have been with the ship since the 1975 maiden voyage, operate like the seamen of a time gone by.

This company has received a  4 out of 5 stars  average rating on TripAdvisor and Get Your Guide ( read the reviews ).

RIVERBOAT CITY OF NEW ORLEANS

This is the newest addition to the New Orleans Steamboat Company, and it took over for the Steamboat Natchez while that vessel was under repair.

Just like the Steamboat Natchez, this boat is also a paddlewheeler, so functionally, very little will change.

The Riverboat City of New Orleans operated all the sightseeing, lunch, brunch, and dinner Jazz cruises for the New Orleans Steamboat Company during the last few years while the Steamboat Natches was undergoing repairs.

Rest assured that even aboard this new vessel there is plenty of room across its multiple decks to accommodate plenty of guests and fill in for its sister boat.

CREOLE QUEEN PADDLEWHEELER

Built in 1983 with the esteem and allure of the late 1850s paddlewheelers, the Creole Queen features an enormous 24-foot paddlewheel and modern amenities for elegance and safety.

Browse the list of tours below to pick which experience is best for you; gather on the 1,000-passenger deck for live music, dancing, a history lesson, or maybe enjoy lunch or dinner.

This vessel's review profile is a tad lower than its competitor's but still good with an overall average rating of 4 out of 5 stars on TripAdvisor and Get Your Guide ( read the reviews ).

DAYTIME CRUISES WITH OPTIONAL LUNCH

There are basically two different cruises to choose from, one from each company.

The main differences seem to be that the Creole Queen includes a stop at Chalmette Battlefield at the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve.

It is also included at no extra charge with the purchase of either the New Orleans Sightseeing Pass or the Go City New Orleans Pass .

The Steamboat Natchez offers jazz music on the lunch cruise during the high season.

Steamboat Natchez Harbor Jazz Cruise

An overwhelming majority of reviews for this jazz cruise are very positive ( read the reviews ).

Some reviewers have even described their band as “magnificent,” suggesting that the music played onboard was absolutely wonderful.

Some customers feel that the experience is a bit too touristy, but they are definitely in the minority.

Most guests leave excellent feedback stating that they loved this musical trip on the Natchez. This activity is particularly popular among couples.

NOTE: After a year or two in repairs, the newly rennovated Steamboat Natchez is finally offering cruises in New Orleans as of November 2023.

Unlike their harbor cruise, this boat trip will take you down the Mississippi River.

Ratings for this excursion are similarly excellent, but it’s worth noting that not everyone was thrilled with the food selection ( read the reviews ).

Once you arrive, consider taking our self-guided walking tour of Algiers Point .

This company has received a 4 out of 5 stars  rating on TripAdvisor.

There are a few negative reviews, but most of them seem to come from customers who were expecting the typical tourist experience.

Although they don’t offer the same range of services as a boat tour or cruise, it’s clear that a lot of their customers are more than pleased with the transportation they provide.

The categories (beginner, intermediate & intermediate to advanced) are based on distance, the necessary level of athleticism and exposure to variables/natural elements.

None of the tours require previous kayaking experience.

There are no shuttle transportation costs as all of their tours launch from the city and are reachable by public transportation, bike or a cheap cab ride.

  • Big Easy Bayou (Beginner, 2 hours) $49 per person

Best for first-timers and non-athletic travelers.

This two-hour tour of Bayou St. John is a great way to see the neighborhood and see some wildlife in a relaxed atmosphere.

This is a history-based tour with culture, current events, ecology, and all things relevant to Bayou St. John, its surrounding neighborhoods, and New Orleans.

  • Pontchartrain (Intermediate, 4 hours) $84

Looking for something more active? Check out this four-hour lake tour that runs the length of Bayou St. John and back!

Bonus, you’ll exit the kayak to stretch and walk over to Pontchartrain Lake, and maybe even take a quick swim!

Like the Big Easy Bayou above, expect to learn about the history and culture of the area.

The Big Easy Bayou is your best option for this company, and the only one recommended for beginners.

Looking for more options? Consider looking at New Orleans Kayak Tours (above) for more newcomer-friendly trips.

Before you book...

WARNING: There is NO exiting these tours halfway through and the Bayou Bienvenue 3 hour tour has no bathroom breaks. Be sure you are committed before you buy your tickets.

This tour company is featured in several top travel recommendations for New Orleans, and explorers wishing to see more than Bourbon Street have given it rave reviews!

French quarter, restaurant overview.

The Riverboat CITY of NEW ORLEANS, sister vessel to the Steamboat NATCHEZ, is about to go into the history books as the newest floating palace on Old Man River. Like New Orleans riverboats of old, the cuisine will be magnificent, the music soul-stirring, and the adventure one you will remember for a lifetime.

You’ll be able to choose from three uniquely New Orleans experiences. The Mardi Gras Jazz Brunch Cruise will feature live music and great New Orleans food with a festive Carnival theme. The Jazz Brunch Cruise & Mardi Gras World Tour Combo will give you all that plus a chance to try on Mardi Gras costumes, learn a little Carnival history and tour the workshop where they build Mardi Gras floats year-round (you’ll even get a piece of king cake!). And the Jazz Dinner Cruise will offer classic New Orleans cuisine and cocktails and music from an authentic Dixieland band. There’s nothing like seeing the French Quarter at night from the river.

We love this cruise so much! It took us down the river for scenic views paired with a cery informational audio tour. The brunch and drinks were delicious, and the jazz band on the top deck really rounded out a pleasant NOLA experience.

We absolutely loved this excursion for my bach! It was easy to get tickets printed at the dock and the boat had indoor and outdoor spaces. Was super fun even though it started our rainy and was a different experience for out of town friends.

The booze, brunch & jazz cruise was amazing. The food was great, classic New Orleans style brunch. Jumbo, grits, bacon. The whole works. The music was the best part. Just was just something magical about listening to jazz while sailing the Mississippi River was an experience of a life time. The Bach app really helped facilitate and enjoy the experience overall. If I go back to New Orleans for whatever reason. I would deff do the brunch jazz cruise again!

Brittany D.

We had so much fun on the booze brunch and jazz cruise! The food and drinks were amazing, the boat itself was very nice and the ride was enjoyable. Perfect excursion for a bachelor/bachelorette party and would do it again!

What's more fun than brunch on the water with your besties? JAZZ BRUNCH on a beautiful riverboat in NOLA. This is an experience your girls are sure to love that will leave you with memories that will last you a lifetime!

March 2022 • Bachelorette Party

We loved booking this experience because it was relaxing and a meal was included. It was neat to see all of the sights and on boarding was a breeze. The weather was perfect! It was a lot of fun and I would do it again.

February 2022 • Bachelorette Party

We loved the Booze, Brunch, & Jazz Cruise. First, the food on this was actually AMAZING. I'm a foodie, so I have high standards. As soon as you sit down, you're fed. (My kind of place). We also had a blast on the second deck listening to the jazz band, dancing, and taking photos outside with our crew. The cruise wasn't too long or too short, and it definitely felt like a very "New Orleans" experience. We loved it!

I truly enjoyed myself on the boat. The food/drink options were phenomenal and the jazz played their hearts out!

My only thing was that she didn't have a hands free device while driving and talking. The company really should buy her one, it would be a lot safer than her having to drive a bus with one hand and hold a microphone with the other. Read more Written March 18, 2024

  • Freedom706662 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles This is a MUST-SEE! We very much enjoyed the audio tour of the Whitney Plantation. The bus ride there and back from the French Quarter went fast due to John's knowledgeable and entertaining commentary on New Orleans's history! However, we felt we had JUST enough time to do the tour and visit the museum. We had to rush a bit through the museum and gift shop. Now our bus was a tad late arriving to pick us up, and we are slow movers and like to take things in, so one or both of these could be reasons for feeling a bit rushed while on the plantation. Also, we were asked to be back on the bus after our tour by a certain time, and we had to sit and wait at least 20 minutes for one person. I am wondering if any policy can be put in place for this. Any way to text this person? I mean, if there was another tour after ours, which I think there was, perhaps they come back with them? We had other things to do that day and dinner reservations, so time was tight for us. Now, with all this being said, we HIGHLY recommend the Whitney tour, and thank John for his knowledge and insights! Read more Written March 17, 2024
  • taniavindingh 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Welcome to the ice bus I went to Whitney Plantation on a rainy day in March, when the outside temperature was about 10-15 degrees celcius. In New Orleans, the temperature was a bit warmer, which is why i, as the typical turist, took on a skort and a t-shirt. From the moment i sat on the bus, i felt cold. The driver had put on the air con and with a high fan speed. Because of the fan speed, it was really noisy and you could not hear anything of the (i guess) interesting things, the guide told us on the way to the plantation. On the way, it started raininibg, so I know that you need to have the ventilation on in order to prevent damp windows. But again, it was too cold and too loud. The stop at the plantation was good. You got an audioguide and could walk around the plantation by yourself. The main house, though, was not much, and only very few pieces of furniture was left, and you could only visit the groundfloor. But the visit was nice, and i was lucky to be there while there was a clearing in the weather. On the way back i kindly asked the driver, if he could turn on the heat in the bus as it was really cold on the way out. He said yes, but there was no change to the temperature on the was back. I have never been so cold on a turist bus before, and only less than a week later, i got a cold, which i am still struggling with today while writing this review. It is really an unfortunate way to start your holiday. I would have given some tips to the guide and made a better recommendation, but to me the cold and the noise in the bus was really the “party killer”. There is absolutely no need for the air con being turned on, when the outside temperature was only around 15 degrees. Then, most people would like the heat to be turned on in such temperatures. I defrosted, when i got outside the bus, where the temperature was nice (also on whitney plantation). But once i got inside the bus again, i started freezing. Read more Written March 17, 2024

For CJ McCollum, New Orleans is a ‘special place’ and he’s not just saying that

When CJ McCollum said New Orleans would be part of his family for the rest of his life, he meant every word. And w hen he and his wife, Elise, picked potential names for their first daughter last year, they backed those words up with action.

“We went through a bunch of names that we liked, and Margot was a name that we loved,” McCollum told The Athletic. “We had to choose how we would spell it. I figured it would be a perfect opportunity to mark this huge chapter in our life.”

Last November, they welcomed Margaux McCollum to the family.

CJ knew ending his daughter’s first name with “aux” was a special homage to the people of New Orleans. Natives who grew up in the city and surrounding areas have plenty of Creole names that end with ‘aux,’ such as Boudreaux, Thibodaux or Breaux.

It was further proof that for CJ and his wife, New Orleans isn’t just another stop on what is approaching a 12-year NBA journey.

When McCollum was traded to the Pelicans in February 2022, he already had a strategic plan in place for the next phase of his career. Before he even stepped foot in New Orleans, h e intended to make the city a second home and establish roots that would carry him through the end of his playing days.

After spending his first nine years as a pro in Portland, he had no desire to bounce around from city to city during the latter part of his NBA career.

He thought the Pelicans would be the perfect organization for him to make that kind of long-term commitment. With a young core in place, the team had the potential to grow into a contender and a need for a veteran presence like him to tie it all together.

But as McCollum has spent more time learning what the city of New Orleans has to offer, his appreciation for everything that makes it such a unique place has grown immensely.

“It’s been cool learning about the South, experiencing a new culture, and meeting the people,” McCollum said. “People in this city are very authentic. They are blunt, which is great for me because it matches my personality. When you show love to the people, they show it back.

“All it took was a few months, and me and my wife fell in love with this place.”

That sort of local pride and commitment from a player of McCollum’s caliber goes a long way in this town. Like many small-market fan bases, Pelicans supporters often fear their star players becoming potential targets for teams in bigger cities, like New York or Los Angeles.

However, that insecurity is even greater in the Crescent City because it has so often been justified. Whether it be Baron Davis, Chris Paul, Anthony Davis or Jrue Holiday, Pelicans fans are all too familiar with seeing some of their favorites vouch for New Orleans in public, only to push and receive a trade elsewhere behind the scenes. The worry that Zion Williamson would be next was one of the biggest storylines in the early part of his career, even though he’s repeatedly said how much he loves being in New Orleans.

Instead, six months after joining the Pelicans, McCollum happily signed a two-year extension that ties him to New Orleans through the 2025-26 season. He did not have to get that deal done right away. Once McCollum’s extension kicks in next summer, his salary will slightly dip over the next two seasons. But while McCollum benefits from locking in some long-term security, his primary goal when signing his extension was to show his teammates and the organization that this was where he wanted to be.

Once again, he backed up his words with action.

“I’m serious about my commitment to New Orleans. I don’t do this for play-play,” McCollum said. “This place holds a special place in my heart, and my family feels the same way.”

For McCollum, immersing himself in a city isn’t just about his on-court performance. He takes just as much pride in his community work away from the gym to “leave a place better than we found it.”

On Thursday, he unveiled one of his most significant achievements yet with the CJ McCollum Dream Center, which is situated in the Boy & Girls Club in Gretna, La just across the Mississippi River.

With this new center, McCollum hopes to provide a safe place where kids can stay out of trouble and gain an even deeper appreciation for the power of education. McCollum has two other dream centers he opened in Portland, and this initiative also is a continuation of the work he’s done with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America over the years.

While putting this project together, McCollum has sought assistance from the Gayle and Tom Benson Charitable Foundation, Meta, Bose, Habitat for Humanity Americorps volunteers in New Orleans and several local New Orleans artists to liven up the space and provide some of the newest technology for kids to use.

“Education is something that was stressed in my household since I was a kid. In a lot of these communities, if you give people access to different places and different opportunities to gain education, it completely changes their trajectory in life,” McCollum said. “We want to open those doors up for people who don’t necessarily have access to all the tools they need.

“The Boys and Girls Club is near and dear to me. It changed my life,” he continued. “We want to find ways to keep kids out of trouble and put them on the path to reaching that next level in life.”

As much as McCollum has expressed a desire to stay in New Orleans as long as possible, the organization has been just as adamant about his importance to this current team and the culture it hopes to set for the future. People within the organization constantly point to McCollum as the example they hope everyone on the team follows — whether it be his work habits in the practice gym, his relationship with the media or his community work around the city.

“CJ’s a great representative for our team and the city of New Orleans,” Pelicans coach Willie Green said. “He’s a really genuine person and he’s very selfless in the way he does things. We’re lucky to have him as one of our pillars.”

On the court, as the Pelicans are putting together one of their most successful seasons of the past decade, McCollum’s willingness to alter his style of play and shot selection is another example of what members of the organization mean when they say his impact is bigger than his statistics.  He’s shown a willingness to do whatever it takes to make his partnership with Williamson and Brandon Ingram work, even if it ends his streak of eight straight seasons averaging at least 20 points per game. ( He’s down to 18.3 points per game with 17 games remaining on the schedule.)

“CJ’s shooting has been tremendous for us this season. The way he’s shifted some of the things he’s doing on the court has been extremely important for our success on offense,” Green said. “He’s a guy who’s had a ton of success in this league. So, to see him be so open to doing things differently, that sends the right type of message to everyone else on the team.”

It’s unclear how many years McCollum still has left in the tank. The 32-year-old said he doesn’t see retirement in his future anytime soon. Considering he’s shooting better than 41 percent on 7.9 3-point attempts per game this season, his highest conversion rate since the 2016-17 season, the Pelicans hope he won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.

Regardless, he’s determined to impact the city of New Orleans just as much as it’s already impacted him in a short time.

WEATHER ALERT

A river flood warning in effect for Brantley and Glynn Counties

Rats are high on marijuana evidence at an infested police building, new orleans chief says.

Associated Press

NEW ORLEANS – Rats have gotten into confiscated pot at New Orleans' aging police headquarters, munching the evidence as the building is taken over by mold and cockroaches, said the city's police chief.

“The rats eating our marijuana, they're all high,” Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick told New Orleans City Council members.

Kirkpatrick described vermin infestations and decay at the offices that have housed New Orleans police since 1968, saying officers have even found rat droppings on their desks.

The police department did not immediately respond to an emailed request Wednesday for more information on how they discovered marijuana was eaten by rats or whether any cases were impacted.

City officials are taking steps to move the department to a new space. That's been a priority of the police chief since she took office in October.

The chief said her 910 officers come to work to find air-conditioning and elevators broken. She told council members the conditions are demoralizing to staff and a turnoff to potential recruits coming for interviews.

“The uncleanliness is off the charts,” Kirkpatrick said, adding that it's no fault of the department's janitorial staff. "They deserve an award for trying to clean what is uncleanable.”

The city council is weighing a proposal to spend $7.6 million on a 10-year lease to temporarily relocate the police headquarters to a pair of floors in a high-rise building downtown.

The council's Criminal Justice Committee agreed Monday to advance the leasing proposal to the full City Council for a vote, The Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate reported .

Kirkpatrick says the rental agreement would give the department time to come up with plans for a new permanent headquarters.

Ron Harrison, global technical director for Orkin Pest Control, told The Associated Press he hasn’t encountered someone reporting rats eating their marijuana though the company has pest control contracts for some greenhouses that grow it.

Harrison said the New Orleans situation isn’t completely shocking since rats are omnivores, and that the rats may experience the same effects from the marijuana as humans, depending on what form it was in.

“From understanding the biology of the rat and how it’s somewhat similar to us, I would think based on the amount or concentration they take in, it would be somewhat similar to what humans experience,” Harrison said.
