However, there are other reasons that your car might be squealing. If it’s not coming from the engine area, but rather when you turn, your issue might be in the steering system instead. Or, if you hear squealing when you brake, you might need new brake pads.

2. Tapping/Clicking

There’s a distinctive sound that the car engine makes when the oil is low. It resembles a clicking, ticking or tapping noise. Thankfully, this condition is one of the easiest to diagnose; just take a look at the dipstick.

You can also resolve the issue easily by adding more oil. However, adding oil is a short-term fix. You still want to figure out why your car is low on oil in the first place. 

Low oil can be caused by a leak, either internally or externally, as well as conditions where it is being burned up.

3. Grinding

There are many different car systems that can make a grinding noise, but when just focused on the engine alone, it could be due to worn-out bearings. If this is the case, you will hear the grinding sound when driving or idling.

However, a grinding noise that occurs during shifting is likely a worn-out clutch instead. Grinding can also occur when taking a turn because of a bad CV joint or another suspension-related issue.

This occurs when the fuel and air mixture in one of the cylinders detonates at numerous locations simultaneously. It’s possible that you put the wrong octane fuel into the system, which can cause this problem. 

However, it can also be caused by a lean air and fuel mixture, poor timing, or a damaged knock sensor . All knocking noises need to be dealt with immediately before further engine damage occurs.

5. Loud Banging

6. Hissing/Sizzling

If you hear a sizzling or popping sound immediately after shutting down the engine, there could be a leak. Either oil or coolant is leaking onto a hot engine component. 

You might see the leak on the exhaust manifold, or it could be harder to find. It could also just be a vacuum line. Either way, the problem should be addressed immediately, especially if the engine is starting to overheat.

However, buying a new engine is quite expensive. For most people, it’s better to purchase a remanufactured engine. If you have a newer car, you will want the warranty that comes with a brand-new motor instead. 

A used engine and labor will still likely run $1,500 or more. New gas engines and installation are going to be $3,000 or more. A new Ford V10 engine costs $5,000 or more. However, there are some cars that don’t cost as much. For example, a new Ford Focus engine might only be $500 for the engine, not including the labor. If you have a diesel engine, you are looking at a much higher bill.

Wanted to know if a motorboat sound was normal from the CVT at highway speeds. Dealer said it was normal without driving it. Been hearing since I purchased and don't remember it from my 2017 Maxima. Is it normal drone CVT noise I'm hearing. Thanks in advance  

What year is your Murano? Is it AWD? Any chance you could post a sample of the noise? My 2021 sounds like a car, not a motorboat. There has been a discussion about a car sounding like a chainsaw or dirt bike or swarm of insects, etc. Maybe an outboard engine should be included... My Maxima is a 2021 maybe hard to record but definitely engine or Trans. Its slight and varies with speed 40 to 60MPH on highway. Could be drone bit I've heard a CVT drone before and I don't remember this. My dealer Mgr said they do drain and refill only on the CVT fluid at 60K. Everything I read shows a paper filter. Called another dealer and they confirmed gasket fluid filter all get replaced at 40K so I'll be speaking with my dealer.  

When i read the "between 40 to 60mph" part, wheel bearings come to mind.  

You might want to post in a Maxima forum just in case there are some mechanical or electrical differences with the CVT and drivetrain of the Murano and Maxima. I doubt they're apples and oranges, but you never know. For what it's worth, some of the failing CVTs and/or transfer cases in my 2003 started making some really loud, lawnmower-like sounds prior to being replaced. Probably related to the drum bearings wearing away.

It's more like a varying groaning sound.  

Just a thought here, FWIW. I have found that the tires I run can make a big difference in the amount of noise my car makes. Definitely not saying that’s what yours is, but just tossing it out there. You say it varies. I assume that’s dependent on speed. Try shifting manually into a lower “pseudo gear” and see if the pitch changes. If not, it’s got to be tires. Or, come to think of it, any of the propellor shafts. If it DOES vary in pitch, it’s the transmission for sure.

At least seven people were killed and another 21 wounded when a race car ploughed into spectators at a packed motorsport event hosted by Sri Lanka's army Sunday, police said.

A driver crashed into the crowd on an unprotected stretch of the track at the Fox Hill circuit, which is maintained by the Sri Lankan army.

A video shared widely on social media showed track marshals waving yellow flags to warn other drivers to slow down after a car overturned on the track.

The drivers are seen speeding past in clouds of orange dust until a red car slams into the crowd, and people are heard screaming.

"A total of 27 people were taken to hospital and seven of them succumbed to their injuries," spokesman Nihal Thalduwa said, adding that an eight-year-old girl was among the dead.

Shortly before the crash, army chief Vikum Liyanage announced that the gates had been opened to spectators free of charge to promote motorsports, with the event being held for the first time in five years due to the Covid pandemic and the island's economic crisis.

"Today is a very special day... we decided to allow anyone to come in free," Liyanage said, claiming that about 100,000 spectators were at the Fox Hill circuit, around 180 kilometres (112 miles) east of Colombo.

Sri Lanka's roads are among the most dangerous in the world. On average, eight fatalities are reported daily along the 12,500 kilometers (7,812 miles) of roads.

18-year-old driver killed, 2 others injured in 3-car crash in Macomb County

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, MI -- A three-car crash that happened Tuesday morning left one driver dead and two others injured, according to WDIV-Detroit. Police were dispatched to the area of Groesbeck Highway and Macomb Industrial Drive around 7:14 a.m. for reports of a crash.

Police determined that an 18-year-old man was driving northbound on Groesbeck Highway in a 2013 Chevrolet Impala, while another driver was traveling southbound in a 2023 Chevrolet Blazer. The driver of the Blazer merged into the center lane to turn left onto North Avenue when the Impala crossed into the center land and hit the Blazer. The Impala then hit another vehicle, a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado that was also traveling southbound.

The 18-year-old driver of the Impala was transported to a nearby hospital where they died as a result of their injuries. The drivers of the other two vehicle suffered minor injuries and received treatment following the crash.

The identity of the victim has not been released by police.

Lotus' first F1 race car heads to auction

The first Lotus Formula 1 car will be among the featured lots at a Bonhams auction scheduled for May 10 in Monaco.

The original Team Lotus dissolved in the early 1990s (other unrelated teams subsequently used the Lotus name), but it was once an F1 powerhouse, winning seven Constructors' and six Drivers' Championships with innovative cars designed under the supervision of legendary Lotus founder Colin Chapman .

This car—chassis number 353—is the one that started it all. A Lotus 12, it was raced by Team Lotus eight times between 1957 and 1959 in both F1 and F2, as the rules of the time allowed crossover between the two categories.

The car's outings included the 1957 BRDC International Trophy, a non-championship race for F1 cars at Silverstone. While not part of the official World Championship calendar, it marked the F1 debut of both Lotus and driver Graham Hill, who would go on to win two F1 championships and the " triple crown " of the Monaco Grand Prix, Indianapolis 500, and 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Chassis number 353 was also the first Lotus to race in the F1 championship proper, when Hill drove it in the 1958 Monaco Grand Prix. Historic significance aside, the car didn't have an especially good racing record, with its best finish being second, achieved in a pair of F2 races.

Exemplifying Chapman's philosophy of "simplify, then add lightness," the car is claimed to weigh just 700 pounds in racing trim thanks to a chassis made from aircraft aluminum. A Coventry Climax inline-4 makes 141 hp in F2 tune, which is sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed sequential gearbox with an unusual lefthand straight-line shift pattern.

Lotus sold chassis number 353 to privateer John Fisher after the 1958 racing season. Fisher raced it four times in 1959 before selling it to Australian Frank Gardner, who had plans to continue racing the historic Lotus but soon sold it. The car passed through a few more owners before being acquired by current owner Mike Bennett and a partner in 1991. Bennett acquired full ownership of the car in 1995 and had it fully restored.

Bonhams expects the first Lotus F1 car to sell for between $310,000 and $420,000 at auction. But to dedicated Lotus fans, it just might be priceless.
