8 Car Noises: What They Mean & If You Should Worry

  • Aug 17,2023

Woman with her ear tilted towards her car's engine, listening for what the car noise might be

Are you hearing a squeal, clunk, or clank? Don't put your headphones on, and tune out! Learn which car noises should have you headed to your technician as soon as possible and which noises are less than urgent.

Sound #1: Screeching Sound When Braking

  • What you hear : A high-pitched squealing coming from your tires when you step on the brake pedal.
  • What’s happening : The brake pad wear indicator might be rubbing up against the rotor.
  • Cause for concern? This isn't an emergency. The brake pad indicator is there to let you know when your brake pads have worn down and need to be replaced.

If this is indeed the problem, you're not in any immediate danger but you'll want to plan to have your brake pads replaced in the near future. However, most brake noises are signs of trouble, and some can be serious, so it is best to get it checked by a professional technician.

Sound #2: Squealing Noise When Driving

  • What you hear : A loud squealing noise coming from under the hood.
  • What’s happening : This is a classic sign of a loose or worn serpentine belt .
  • Cause for concern? Yes, because the serpentine belt powers many of your car’s major systems . A squealing serpentine belt is one that could be about to break or isn’t powering the engine’s accessories properly. When an old serpentine belt snaps, drive torque to all of the engine's accessories is lost, and you're left, well
" up the creek" with a car that won't go or it could even overheat.

Unless you want to throw down some money for a tow truck, scheduling an appointment for a vehicle inspection may be in your best interest. Your technician can help you understand how much life, or how little life, may be left in this essential engine component.

Sound #3: Loud Noise When Starting

  • What you hear : Sounds like a grumpy cat, "rur rur rur," when you start the engine.
  • What’s happening : Your battery is likely losing juice and is struggling to power the engine.
  • Cause for concern? This is less of a safety concern and more of a convenience concern, as your car could end up failing to start tomorrow, next week, or next month—it's tough to make an exact prediction. A slow engine crank paired with this unfortunate noise means your battery is on the fritz. It may be past its prime and in need of replacement.

Head over to your local Firestone Complete Auto Care for a free battery test and our car whisperers will let you know how much "life" is left in your battery. Or, give your car a virtual battery test online !

Sound #4: Roaring Noise When Driving

  • What you hear : A loud roaring sound coming from somewhere underneath the driver’s seat.
  • What’s happening : You probably have a leak or crack in your exhaust system . The roaring you hear is excess engine noise that would normally get silenced by the muffler. When your exhaust system fails, all of your engine's sound waves and vibrations get channelled into the car.
  • Cause for concern? The driver's seat is vibrating like a massage chair, which is kind of nice. And the noise isn’t too noticeable when the radio is cranked up. Maybe you can let this one slide? Nope. A malfunctioning exhaust system means that you could have poisonous carbon monoxide venting into the cabin.

Don’t delay—this is a sound you want to get checked out right away!

Sound #5: Flapping, Like a Fish Out of Water

  • What you hear: A flapping or slapping sound when you run the air conditioner or blowers.
  • What’s happening: A loose, misaligned or worn out ventilation flap is, well...flapping.
  • Cause for concern? No biggie. This might impact your airflow and the sound will likely drive you a little nuts, but it’s not a serious safety issue. Turn up the tunes, roll down your window, and feel free to get to it when you have time. Or, nip this annoying little problem in the bud by scheduling an A/C performance check .

Sound #6: A Giant, Groaning Yawn

  • What you hear: When you turn the steering wheel, the car groans and whines like it just woke up from a deep and pleasant slumber. The steering wheel may also feel stiff and unresponsive.
  • What’s happening: Something in your power steering system is causing friction. According to the folks at CarTalk , your power-steering pump could be about to say, "Farewell!"
  • Cause for concern? Yes. Have your power-steering system checked out. As the problem worsens, you’ll slowly lose control over the car’s steering. You could also cause further damage to the rest of the power-steering system.

This is a significant safety issue. Schedule a checkup at your nearest Firestone Complete Auto Care location as soon as you can. In the meantime, try not to make any fast or sudden turns.

Sound #7: Squeaking Noise When Turning The Steering Wheel

  • What you hear: The steering column squeaks when you turn the wheel.
  • What’s happening: Like a groaning steering wheel, this is an indicator of an issue with the power-steering system, but a light squeak is less concerning than a major groan. It's likely a symptom of low power-steering fluid.
  • Cause for concern? Not as big of a safety concern as Sound #6. If topping off your power-steering fluid fixes the problem, then there shouldn’t be anything to worry about. This fluid is the cheapest part of your power-steering system and changing it/keeping it topped off can help extend the life of the much pricier power-steering pump and rack, says CarTalk. If replacing the fluid doesn't squelch the squeak, you may have a leak in your power-steering lines. Keep an eye on it.

Sound #8: Are We At A Metal Show? Or Is That My Brakes?

  • What you hear: Loud, metal on metal grinding sound coming from your brakes.
  • What’s happening: You’ve worn right through your brake pads and now the calipers are grinding against the rotor.
  • Cause for concern? When it comes to your car, metal on metal grinding is almost always a cause for concern. In this case, your brakes won’t work properly until you get the pads replaced. What’s more, driving without brake pads is dangerous. According to a study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration , 25% of vehicle crashes can be attributed to brakes that were degraded or failing.

Accidents like these can be avoided with a little forethought and maintenance. When you hit the road, don’t let it hit you back. Schedule a  brake repair  service today and  stay ahead of brake problems .

When your car works, everything works. If your car is trying to tell you something is out of whack, listen. Then turn to your local Firestone Complete Auto Care location for all of your noise-related questions or repair needs. Schedule your appointment online or give your local technician a call today!

Motorboat sound on highway

  • Add to quote

Wanted to know if a motorboat sound was normal from the CVT at highway speeds. Dealer said it was normal without driving it. Been hearing since I purchased and don't remember it from my 2017 Maxima. Is it normal drone CVT noise I'm hearing. Thanks in advance

motorboat sound from car

What year is your Murano? Is it AWD? Any chance you could post a sample of the noise? My 2021 sounds like a car, not a motorboat. There has been a discussion about a car sounding like a chainsaw or dirt bike or swarm of insects, etc. Maybe an outboard engine should be included... The following link has a video excerpt of a buzzing-like sound. You might want to take a listen to see if it resembles what you're hearing. https://www.nissanmurano.org/threads/strange-noise-during-snowstorm.228267/post-782934

My Maxima is a 2021 maybe hard to record but definitely engine or Trans. Its slight and varies with speed 40 to 60MPH on highway. Could be drone bit I've heard a CVT drone before and I don't remember this. My dealer Mgr said they do drain and refill only on the CVT fluid at 60K. Everything I read shows a paper filter. Called another dealer and they confirmed gasket fluid filter all get replaced at 40K so I'll be speaking with my dealer.

motorboat sound from car

When i read the "between 40 to 60mph" part, wheel bearings come to mind.

You might want to post in a Maxima forum just in case there are some mechanical or electrical differences with the CVT and drivetrain of the Murano and Maxima. I doubt they're apples and oranges, but you never know. For what it's worth, some of the failing CVTs and/or transfer cases in my 2003 started making some really loud, lawnmower-like sounds prior to being replaced. Probably related to the drum bearings wearing away.

Thanks I will. My car has 27000 miles so I'd hope not but you never know about defects I have that luck. Thanks again.

It's more like a varying groaning sound.

motorboat sound from car

Just a thought here, FWIW. I have found that the tires I run can make a big difference in the amount of noise my car makes. Definitely not saying that’s what yours is, but just tossing it out there. You say it varies. I assume that’s dependent on speed. Try shifting manually into a lower “pseudo gear” and see if the pitch changes. If not, it’s got to be tires. Or, come to think of it, any of the propellor shafts. If it DOES vary in pitch, it’s the transmission for sure.

7 Engine Noises You Should Never Ignore

Engine Noises You Should Not Ignore

Does it ever feel like you need to be a sound expert to figure out what’s wrong with your car? With all the moving parts, there is a lot that can go wrong. From squealing to grinding, it’s important you know how to discern the different sounds your car engine is making.

One part you don’t ever want any strange noises coming from is the engine. Yet, it happens, and a quick diagnosis of the problem can help you save your engine. Today, I review seven common car engine noises and show you what each means.

Car Engine Noises You Should Never Ignore

1. squealing.

serpentine belt car

Is there ever a time that squealing is good, even outside of the automotive realm? If you hear a squeal coming from under the hood, it should cause alarm. Most times, this annoying sound is related to a loose or worn-out serpentine belt.

This belt is responsible for controlling all of the engine accessories, such as the alternator and water pump . Because of its importance, you don’t want to ignore the need for a replacement.

However, there are other reasons that your car might be squealing. If it’s not coming from the engine area, but rather when you turn, your issue might be in the steering system instead. Or, if you hear squealing when you brake, you might need new brake pads.

RELATED: 7 Symptoms of a Bad Serpentine Belt

2. Tapping/Clicking

engine oil level

There’s a distinctive sound that the car engine makes when the oil is low. It resembles a clicking, ticking or tapping noise. Thankfully, this condition is one of the easiest to diagnose; just take a look at the dipstick.

You can also resolve the issue easily by adding more oil. However, adding oil is a short-term fix. You still want to figure out why your car is low on oil in the first place.

Low oil can be caused by a leak, either internally or externally, as well as conditions where it is being burned up.

However, if you check the oil and everything seems fine, you might have a valvetrain problem instead. These are serious concerns that should be looked at right away.

3. Grinding

driving highway

There are many different car systems that can make a grinding noise, but when just focused on the engine alone, it could be due to worn-out bearings. If this is the case, you will hear the grinding sound when driving or idling.

However, a grinding noise that occurs during shifting is likely a worn-out clutch instead. Grinding can also occur when taking a turn because of a bad CV joint or another suspension-related issue.

Of course, the most notorious grinding sound occurs with the brakes when the pads are worn down. Once this sound occurs, you know that the brakes are down to the metal.

Whether you hear grinding from the engine or other car components, it’s a serious sound that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Get your car to a local service shop right away.

4. Knocking

knocking engine

The engine can make a distinct pinging or metallic knocking sound while driving. This condition is known as detonation knock.

This occurs when the fuel and air mixture in one of the cylinders detonates at numerous locations simultaneously. It’s possible that you put the wrong octane fuel into the system, which can cause this problem.

However, it can also be caused by a lean air and fuel mixture, poor timing, or a damaged knock sensor . All knocking noises need to be dealt with immediately before further engine damage occurs.

RELATED: 6 Causes of a Knocking or Pinging Car Engine

5. Loud Banging

noise from car

We’ve all heard it once in our lives – that distinctive explosion sound that reminds you of fireworks. This condition is known as a backfire. It occurs when the fuel wasn’t burned in the combustion chamber and escapes.

Once it moves beyond the combustion chamber, it combusts in the exhaust instead. Any time the fuel/air ratio becomes too rich or lean, a backfire can occur. Allowing your car to backfire only puts it at further risk of damage.

6. Hissing/Sizzling

car vacuum hose leak

If you hear a sizzling or popping sound immediately after shutting down the engine, there could be a leak. Either oil or coolant is leaking onto a hot engine component.

You might see the leak on the exhaust manifold, or it could be harder to find. It could also just be a vacuum line. Either way, the problem should be addressed immediately, especially if the engine is starting to overheat.

RELATED: 6 Symptoms of a Vacuum Leak & Causes

There are a number of conditions that cause popping sounds in the engine. Many of them will be accompanied by engine hesitation, affecting the performance of your car.

Some of the most common reasons for engine popping include a clogged fuel filter , ignition issues, fouled or dirty spark plugs, damaged plug wires or a faulty catalytic converter. Some of these fixes are simple and low-cost, while others, such as the catalytic converter, are going to be more expensive.

Repair Costs

Whatever noise you are hearing, it’s vital to have it diagnosed immediately. Otherwise, the problem could lead to irreversible engine damage. Luckily it is often enough with smaller repairs when you experience any engine noise.

If the engine becomes damaged beyond repair, you are going to need a replacement.

However, buying a new engine is quite expensive. For most people, it’s better to purchase a remanufactured engine. If you have a newer car, you will want the warranty that comes with a brand-new motor instead.

A used engine and labor will still likely run $1,500 or more. New gas engines and installation are going to be $3,000 or more. A new Ford V10 engine costs $5,000 or more. However, there are some cars that don’t cost as much. For example, a new Ford Focus engine might only be $500 for the engine, not including the labor. If you have a diesel engine, you are looking at a much higher bill.

why WHY does my car sound like a motorboat??

Re: why WHY does my car sound like a motorboat?? (Cheshire_Cat) you have an exhaust leak.

Re: why WHY does my car sound like a motorboat?? (TBT-PassatG60) can we strap a g-lader on this? http://www.hobbytron.net/Motor...00263

sure ... all is possible lol

»
you have an exhaust leak.

Re: why WHY does my car sound like a motorboat?? (Cheshire_Cat) start your car and let it run. put something over the tail-pipe to block the exhaust flow. If it doesn't stall, then there is a leak.

»

»

Hm...that could definitely be a possibility. I did just install a new TT exhaust with a high flow cat. It wasn't acting like this right after, but I also haven't driven my car for several months.
It's just far too simple for me to have thought of. I'll have to check it out.

Re: why WHY does my car sound like a motorboat?? (ntonar) retarded timing (distributor, timing belt jump, variable crankshaft) will result in farting/popping/richness. do a once over on all sensors and their wiring first. Could be a wire about ready to shear off causing all your troubles.

Re: why WHY does my car sound like a motorboat?? (mrkrad) Cuz you have a test bed motor that is a pile.

»
Quick question, why would you put money into an exhaust and not get a charger for the car first?

»
Cuz you have a test bed motor that is a pile.

Re: why WHY does my car sound like a motorboat?? (Dub or Die) Good way to find an exaust leak. Have a buddy that smokes come over and hit him up for a cig. Wrap a rag around a air hose and stuff it in your tailpipe, turn the air on. Run the cig ( lighted part ) around the suspect areas, it'll glow like a mofo when placed next to even the smallest leak.

Re: why WHY does my car sound like a motorboat?? (Pigsdofly) DO NOT TWIST IT TOO TIGHT OR IT WILL NOT STAY LIT

Re: why WHY does my car sound like a motorboat?? (Dub or Die) Well, it's not an exhaust leak. I tried checking it myself, but finally just took it to a muffler shop. The guy tested it real quick for free and said there were no leaks, but it sounded to him like it was running on only 3 cylinders. So I took it home and pulled the plug wires one at a time. Either the #1 or #4 cylinder (I don't remember which direction they're counted in, but it's the tranny side of the block) is not firing and my oil is filling up with fuel...again. So, super rich and only 3 cylinders. Now I know the reason it's running the way it is, but I still don't know why.

Re: why WHY does my car sound like a motorboat?? (Cheshire_Cat) well pull that spark plug out no spark --> wire may be bad distributor/rotor might be bad plug might be bad spark but no fuel -> injector bad injector wiring harness krusty bad also a lifter could not be opening it would be the intake lifter. no feul/air in nothing to burn. if it was the exhaust it would backfire like mad (think bout it)

Re: why WHY does my car sound like a motorboat?? (Cheshire_Cat) could be wiring harness. or the injector could be seized open. but you need to know if theres spark on #4. without spark on #4 you got fuel pouring into the cylinder washing the rings and oil fouling. check for spark ASAP. if spark, check the wiring harness going to the injectros its safe to say after 16 years they are krusty as hell.

Re: why WHY does my car sound like a motorboat?? (Cheshire_Cat) no kidding maybe it was a sale day, you sure you didn't splurge on the AP63 platinums lol. i had to run the coppers for nitrous. you can side-gap them (search) to get a better effective spark, and probably run 34 thous gap with no boost since you wont misfire and it could set off the flame more efficiently at low rpm. p.s. just clean off those w6dp0 and put them back on when you get the charger they dont look that bad.

Re: why WHY does my car sound like a motorboat?? (mrkrad) you don't have a chip in that car do you? i had a autotech chip in my old g60 and it was the worst chip you can buy 160 miles out of the tank of gas and winter time car wouldn't even idle because it was getting way too much fuel( fuel in oil)

Mustang GT Coupe

We love cars for more than just how they look and how fast they go. One of the core elements of our emotional attachment to them is the way they sound. Whether it's the gleam of sheet metal shining in the sun or the smell of warm leather baking in the heat on a summer's day, driving is a multisensory experience - and sound is just as important as the look and feel. Some of the best cars of all time earned their place in automotive history thanks to their spine-tingling engine note. If you're keen to drive the best-sounding car possible, read on for a few top picks that will sound like music to your ears, and let us know your favorites, too.

1. Ford Mustang GT

The 2024 Ford Mustang GT comes with the new version of the 5.0-liter Coyote V8, paired with a six-speed manual transmission or a ten-speed automatic. The accompanying soundtrack is a joy to hear, and the optional Active Valve Performance Exhaust turns up the enjoyment factor to 11, especially if you have made the wise choice to buy the convertible version and make the most of the intoxicating V8 noise. But it's not just about keeping your ears happy; the active exhaust also provides a small boost in power, bumping the Mustang GT up from 480 horsepower to 486. Cross-plane V8s aren't often considered the most musical, but we love the Coyote.

2. Audi R8 GT

The R8 GT is Audi's final goodbye to the era of V10 supercars, and as goodbyes go, it's a pretty amazing one. The GT takes the emotion and adrenaline factors to new heights, with exhaust sounds as shiver-inducing as you would expect from a car powered by a 5.2-liter, naturally aspirated V10. And for US drivers, that gorgeous soundtrack is even louder than in Europe, thanks to emissions regulations (or lack thereof) uncorking the engine's full potential. Producing 602 hp, the R8 GT is the most powerful RWD Audi ever made, and it certainly sounds like it. When we drove it around a track at the global launch, the noise reminded us why we love the V10 so much. It's simply incomparable.

3. Chevrolet Corvette Z06

The Corvette Z06's advanced exhaust technology (and its 650-hp, 5.5-liter V8 engine, the largest flat-plane crankshaft V8 on the market) result in a soundtrack that is quite unlike any other. With four exhaust modes (Weather, Tour, Sport, and Track) and two sets of valves controlling the exhaust note, the Z06 allows its driver to control the car's sound with incredible precision. And it's not just passers-by who get to hear it: the car is designed to reflect the sound coming from the exhaust back into the cockpit, so you can enjoy every bit of it sounding like a classic Ferrari at full song.

4. Lexus LC500

The Lexus LC500 has been carefully engineered to provide the perfect balance of peace and enjoyment, with a quiet cabin that insulates the driver from road noise and a spine-tingling soundtrack, courtesy of the 5.0-liter, 471-hp, naturally-aspirated V8 engine, which has been acoustically tuned by the masters at Yamaha. The exhaust noise is a main feature rather than an afterthought on the LC500, with Lexus engineers designing a system that enhances the car's soundtrack without resorting to synthetic additions. An "Inspiration Series" version of the LC500 is also available for those who want a road car that looks (and sounds) like a race car.

5. Gordon Murray Automotive T.50

The next car on the list is, well, not like the others. A modern-day incarnation of the legendary McLaren F1, the T.50 is Gordon Murray Automotive's first supercar, making its appearance in the automotive world in a very exclusive, limited run (only 100 examples were manufactured, with a $3 million price tag). The auditory experience of driving a T.50 is nothing short of unbelievable, with a system GMA has dubbed the "Direct Path Induction Sound" funneling the howl produced by the naturally aspirated V12 directly into the cabin. The V12 in question is a masterpiece, a 656-hp, 3.9-liter Cosworth-engineered specimen with one of the highest rev ceilings of any roadgoing car .

6. Jaguar F-Type

Jaguar is preparing to say goodbye to internal combustion as its electrification plans become a reality: the legendary carmaker is planning to become an all-electric brand in 2025. But how does an automaker known for some of the most sonorous engines, including a remarkable supercharged V6, say goodbye?

Well, it doesn't do anything with said V6, but instead, its bigger brother, the 5.0-liter supercharged V8 found in the F-Type sports car, and it immortalizes the V8's soundtrack in the British Library for decades to come. The F-type's supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine produces up to 567 hp in the high-performance F-Type R, numbers that belie its ability to make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

7. Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio

With its Ferrari-derived engine, the Giulia Quadrifoglio produces one of the best-sounding V6 engine notes in the automotive world. The twin-turbo V6 produces 505 hp at its peak, singing and shrieking its way along the road through a quad-pipe exhaust system that we'd wager is a match for the character of any true blue Ferrari model.

And in post-2019 Giulias, the full might of the engine soundtrack can be admired in all its glory in all driving modes, not just Race mode as, after strong demand from prospective buyers, Alfa announced new Giulias would be able to switch on the dual-mode exhaust even in Dynamic mode .

8. Chevrolet Camaro

It may have officially been declared out of production this month , but the Chevrolet Camaro is still one of our favorite muscle cars, thanks in no small part to its455-hp 6.2-liter LT1 V8, paired with a six-speed manual transmission or ten-speed automatic. If engine note is high on your list of priorities, the V8 is the one to go for: with a deep rumble that makes the Camaro exactly like an all-American, V8-powered muscle car should sound like, it's the best way to say goodbye to an iconic nameplate.

And you can turn it up even further with the Camaro ZL1, which adds a supercharger and bumps outputs to 650 hp and as may lb-ft of torque.

9. Dodge Challenger/Charger

2023 has brought the era of the ICE Challenger and Charger to a close, with a series of "Last Call" models produced before Dodge officially launches its electrification program. In a very on-brand move for muscle car stablemates defined by brutal, straight-line power, both the Challenger and the Charger are going out with a bang rather than a whimper: the Last Call editions get increasingly bonkers, each one of them providing an appropriately ear-splitting soundtrack, all the way up to the barely-road-legal 1025-hp Challenger SRT Demon 170.

The Hemi V8 is unique in a world of cookie-cutter engine configurations, with a unique rumble and deep, throaty bellow that instantly captures the imagination. It may lack the finesse of European V8s, but it's unashamedly American, and for that, we love it, in all its incarnations.

10. Audi RS3

It's not just V8s, 10s, and 12s that make up this list, but a rather unique configuration that only Audi still builds : the inline-five. In the RS3, it's a 2.5-liter five-pot with a turbocharger strapped on, but the tubo doesn't diminish the noise it makes, and the RS3 sings with such vigor that one could easily mistake it for the V10 in the R8 above if you weren't listening carefully.

Power is rated at 402 hp, and torque at 369 lb-ft, all routed to quattro all-wheel drive through a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic with a rear diff that enables a drift mode. 0-60 mph takes 3.6 seconds and the RS3 is limited to 155 mph at its top end.

11. Porsche 911 GT3

This list would not be complete without the 911 GT3's 4.0-liter flat-six, with its majestic high-revving wail really opening up from the 5,000 rpm mark and onwards, reaching a crescendo at a screaming 9,000 rpm. The 911 GT3 comes with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic or a six-speed manual, both of which are sublime partners to the GT3's flat-six. And if you're after something more track-oriented, the GT3 RS comes with a bit more power (518 hp, compared to the standard GT3's 502 hp) and additional aero elements to keep it firmly on the black stuff.

12. Aston Martin Vantage

The Vantage's 4.0-liter, AMG-sourced twin-turbo V8 produces a deep, satisfying rumble that's sure to turn heads, if the car's stunning looks hadn't accomplished that already. Not much is known about the upcoming revamped Vantage which is set to arrive in a matter of months, but early signs are promising, with chief creative officer Mark Reichmann promising the new car will be a "complete hooligan" characterized by a sportier look and F1-inspired styling cues.

Meanwhile, the final edition of the V12 Vantage was released last year with its own distinct - albeit slightly subdued for a V12 due to the presence of the turbochargers - engine note.

Regardless of which engine you pick, the Vantage makes a wonderful noise.
