Ulysses: 107m Kleven Explorer Yacht
by Preferred Publishing
The Heroic Explorer
Kleven’s 107 metre ice-class expedition ship ulysses is the most complete exploration superyacht currently on the market, arguably even afloat until the owners next and larger yacht is delivered..
I n June 2016, MY Ulysses, was handed over by the Norwegian commercial shipyard that built her to Graeme Hart her billionaire owner from New Zealand. Yet even before the ink was dry on the first page of the yachts log book came news that she was for sale for US$195 million and that a second and even larger yacht was being built to replace her. Cleary Mr. Hart enjoys building yachts as much as he does sailing in them.
He also likes to build them big. Measuring 107m, with a full 18m beam and spread over seven decks, the 6,000gt, MY Ulysses is amongst the 30 largest yachts in the world and as such everything is, quite simply, supersized.
In the main salon, a sculpture of glass bubbles in various shades of blue and mirror finish somehow encapsulates the lightness of the interior and how each individual element is part of a larger whole.
Below the Bridge Deck, the owners’ family enjoy a full deck to themselves. Accessed from the starboard lobby and via a private bar area, the deck’s forward section is devoted to an almost full beam office and salon area.
The interior décor, as throughout the rest of the yacht, comprises of a palette of muted neutral tones, the clean contemporary lines of flat panel joinery, but highlighted and accented with enriching details. In the owner’s suite gold is used to provide a heightened sense of luxury, with gold plated fixtures in the en-suites and textured golden insets in the cabin’s headliner recesses.
As for the larger yacht Mr. Hart has under construction at the same yard as built his first, we know little. What we do know is she is due for completion in 2018. Sporting a dark blue hull the new Ulysses will be almost 10 metres longer than her predecessor. Kyle Dick of New Zealand-based Oscar Mike Naval Architects styled the exterior lines and British designers RWD worked on her interior spaces.

107m Kleven explorer yacht Ulysses completes La Rochelle upgrade
The 107 metre Kleven explorer yacht Ulysses , commissioned by New Zealand businessman Graeme Hart, has completed a schedule of upgrade works in La Rochelle.
This project is the first to be completed at the former Atlantic Refit Centre site since its takeover by Compositeworks last year . Working in collaboration with owner's representative Manta Maritime, the yard completed the upgrades in three months.
The upgrades involved input from 130 workers and 40 crewmembers, with new handrails, crew quarters and VIP balconies added, as well as the obvious addition of a fully faired hull finish. Her tender fleet has also been expanded with the addition of a 2,500hp HydraSports 5300, which Manta Maritime describes as the most powerful centre console boat in the world.
Formerly known as Kleven hull 366, Ulysses was developed in collaboration with New Zealand naval architects Oscar Mike and Norwegian ship design company Marin Teknikk . Delivered in March 2016, she was hailed as the toughest toybox on the water .
Ulysses is designed for long-range passages in the most testing of sea conditions and has oceangoing capabilities fitting of the Ulsteinvik yard's heritage. Kleven said the 107 “blends a robust, hard-working character with luxurious added extras”.
Making use of its ample size and huge 18 metre beam, Ulysses can accommodate 60 guests over seven decks. It has interiors by British studio H2 Yacht Design and amenities include a helicopter landing pad, helicopter garage and a superyacht swimming pool .
Kleven has collaborated with Marin Teknikk on many of its offshore vessels, bringing his oceangoing yacht know-how to the new build.
Ståle Rasmussen, CEO of Kleven, said: “We have worked with Marin Teknikk for many years, developing numerous offshore vessels together, and the collaboration between us always works well. This vessel is a good example of our ability to develop and build specialised vessels and prototypes.”
Svein Rune Gjerde, CEO of Marin Teknikk, said: “This has been a different and interesting project for our design team.”
This robust type of yacht seems increasingly in vogue, as exemplified by the 76.6 metre Yersin , which is equipped to protect the planet as well as explore it .
Ulysses is currently the world's fourth largest explorer yacht , but will be overtaken by her big sister. The 116 metre version of Ulysses, Hull 370 , is due to be delivered this summer to the same owner.
