- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

I have a Mariner 40 ketch that I'm refitting. The original mizzen mast boom is about 5' in height from the deck. I am replacing the wooden mast with aluminum and want to add a foot to the height to get more walking room under the boom. Will this cause the boat to be unbalanced under sail and if so, what should I do to correct it? Thanks

The year is not really encoded in the serial, I pull it off a chart. It kinda breaks down like this -. 40E - horsepower/Electric start model. 6E9 - Yamaha production code for 40 horse motors produced in 1981-on (based on the design of Yamaha 40 horse motors produced between 1981-83) S - short shaft (for 15" transom)
That Mariner is a Mercury only painted GREY. The 4 cyl 40 to 50 hp motors are on of THE most reliable motors EVER built. Take along a compression tester and a spark tester set to a 7/16 inch gap. Test each cyl, once you verify each cyl has 110 to 120 psi or better and all within 10% each other.

"Dilwyn, that is a 1990 Yamaha built Mariner. 50:1 with regular unleaded (91 or 92 RON since I see you are on the other side of the big pond) and TCW3 rated Marine 2 stroke oil. Normally, the impellor should be replaced every 2 years. Personally, I will put in a whole kit (impellor/gaskets/seals) every 2nd service interval.
