The Linssen GS500 AC Variotop makes a trip to the UK for a test outside of its inland waterway comfort zone

There is a common perception that Linssen yachts are only suitable for navigating inland waterways. That certainly is not the case with the Grand Sturdy 500 AC Variotop (catchy name, huh?) lying before me on a hammerhead pontoon in East Cowes Marina .

The boat made the journey over to the Isle of Wight via the North Sea and swept along the English south coast to where it sits now; catching the evening sun, light dancing off its polished stainless steel. This is hull number one of the new GS500, the flagship of the range and, though it may not look like it, an all-new design.

Most of the work has been done below the waterline; above it the boat doesn’t look radically different to the 500s that have been coming out of the Maasbracht shipyard since 1996.

The hi-lo bathing platform is fitted as standard

Every tweak to the hull shape has been done due to a borderline obsessive attitude towards refinement and efficiency. New sterngear includes free-hanging propellers and rudders and P-brackets that are integrated into the hull construction to ensure the cleanest possible water flow for improved prop efficiency and less noise and vibration.

The engines are aligned closer to the keel again to facilitate better water flow and minimise cavitation. This forensic pursuit of refinement is crucial when designing a boat this quiet because every other noise is amplified, hence why the prop shafts are cocooned in seven layers of insulation and water-lubricated by an Aquadrive.

The engineroom is equally well insulated. The net result is church mouse decibel levels from the twin 5-cylinder Volvo Penta D3 150hp engines as we glide gently away from the pontoon and make a U-turn on the Medina. Nothing is hurried aboard a Linssen, especially not on one that weighs 30 tonnes plus fluids, a Williams 325 and cruising stores.

The GS500 is whisper-quiet on the move

I aim the bow downstream and noiselessly ease the throttles to 1,300rpm and a 6-knot trickle towards the Solent. The huge steering wheel spins effortlessly beneath my hands and the bow obeys obediently, nosing from port to starboard in a slow, controlled sweep.

The dashboard is a traditional mélange of leather and walnut punctuated by a pair of flush mounted Raymarine Hybrid Touch MFDs. They’re a stretch from the helm bench but Linssen has sensibly mounted the panel of soft keys on the flat area to the right of the wheel so that you can control both screens without having to lean forward.

It is a supremely comfortable driving position, which lends itself to the long lazy journeys that a Linssen owner must relish. You sit high, peering through a three-part windscreen over a long foredeck with excellent sight lines forward and back.

Beneteau Swift Trawler 47 boat test – 24 hours on board

Linssen grand sturdy 52.9 review.

Life in the slow lane, but with more space and more ingenuity than ever on the Linssen Grand Sturdy 52.9

£1270000

The layout of the raised deck means the driving position is also part of the socialising space thanks to a squishy sofa to port where guests can keep the skipper and navigator company. A nifty panel slides out from beneath the helm seat so that there is a place to rest drinks without the need for a bulky fixed table.

Wind the top down

It’s unfortunate that the Solent is as placid as the rivers that feed it for this test, meaning it isn’t possible to grasp how the GS500 would handle the rolling swell of a deep sea passage or even a short chop. The fact that it got here from the Netherlands under its own steam is testament to its ability and with a fuel capacity of 2,370 litres it has the range for serious cruising.

At 5.5 knots the range is nearly 5,000 miles with a 20% reserve and even at the more realistic cruising speed of 8.3 knots it will cover just shy of 900 miles.

linssen-gs500-review-variotop-credit-paul-wyeth

The steering is wonderfully light and the wheel itself a delight to handle

There’s a nagging feeling, though, that if you were caught out in really rough conditions things could get quite uncomfortable. The boat would get through it I’m sure and the stabilisers would take the edge off but shifting a boat this big and heavy out of troughs with just 300hp is going to test the skill and determination of any skipper.

As we enter the Beaulieu River we peel back the Variotop roof to allow natural light and a cooling breeze to fill the main deck. Developed and engineered by Linssen, this roof is one of the GS500’s finest features, transforming the beautifully insulated wheelhouse into an open-air mezzanine where you can absorb your surroundings in glorious exposure to the elements. The mechanism is a work of art, pulling the canvas as tight as a drum to ensure the roof is totally weatherproof when closed.

Passing Gins Farm on the lower reaches of Beaulieu River with the roof open it’s hard to think of a finer way to travel in this environment. The oh-so comfortable helm bench has a trick up its sleeve too: at the push of a button it doesn’t just raise up but ascends high enough for you to sit almost completely clear of the windscreen – it’s quite something.

linssen-gs500-review-helm-credit-paul-wyeth

The flush-mounted screens are very hard to read from the helm seat

We reach the slipway at Buckler’s Hard and perform another U-turn. The engines aren’t enormous but there is good bite from the propellers which, when combined with the 7.5kW bow and stern thrusters (so powerful they need to be run off the generator), you can make the boat pirouette with minimal effort.

Moving around the GS500 is more akin to navigating a building than a boat because everything is so substantial and heavy duty. The teak-lined decks are a dream to negotiate and wide enough for two people to pass each other safely. There is a lack of dedicated fender storage, though, something you really notice when the fenders are this big.

Below, the feeling of solidity remains as does the building analogy with standard fit central heating, including radiators and towel rails in the bathrooms, double glazing and a galley equipped to domestic levels, aside from a full-height fridge/freezer.

linssen-gs500-review-interior-credit-paul-wyeth

Huge saloon windows soak the comfortable interior in natural light

If part of what you use a boat for is as a floating apartment then the big Linssen is ideal thanks to its bright, single-level living space that incorporates the galley, dinette and a more relaxed lounging space aft, opposite the must-have coffee machine.

The point is, though, even if you are on the move you can use this area of the boat. At speed on a planing boat the last place you want to be is below decks, but here, with the excellent view and sedate progress, you’d be as happy sitting down here with a book and a drink as you would be in the aft cockpit.

Some customisation of the interior is possible but there are boundaries. Linssen offers 35 different décor combinations, including six different colour palettes and seven interior trim packages, so there should be an option to suit most tastes.

Home comforts

The accommodation layout has been drawing people to Linssens for decades and they have not attempted to fix what isn’t broken. On the GS500, guests are split between a comfortable ensuite VIP double and a slightly more basic twin cabin on the port side, while at the other end of the boat is the full-beam master suite accessed via a dedicated corridor flanked by storage.

linssen-gs500-review-aft-cabin-credit-paul-wyeth

The master cabin features a huge island double bed

It has a huge 2m x 1.8m island berth, a dressing table, breakfast dinette and ensuite bathroom and with so much distance between it and the guest cabins, the owner will never be disturbed by those at the other end of the boat moving around during the night.

This is a boat built with liveaboards in mind and that has a positive influence on everything from the amount of interior storage to the superb modular engineroom layout. A powered hatch in the saloon lifts up to reveal a spotless machinery space with the hilariously petite D3s mounted with acres of space around them.

Everything is accessible and easy to inspect or replace. The systems are grouped into individual modules so everything from the climate control module (heating and air-con) to the fuel module (tanks and filters) is easy to find and in the same locale.

linssen-gs500-review-engine-room-credit-paul-wyeth

Our test boat was fitted with twin 150hp Volvo Penta D3s

The installation throughout is exemplary and a particularly useful touch is an option that automatically closes certain seacocks when the engines are switched off so important ones aren’t accidentally left open when the boat is unattended for long periods.

Our verdict

The GS500 starts at over €1.1 million even before you add tax, but this standard of engineering and built-in redundancy comes at a price. Some big-ticket items are fitted as standard, too, like teak decking, central heating and the double-glazed windows. Really, all that needs adding are the thrusters, navigation equipment, stabilisers and potentially a hydraulic bathing platform and/or passerelle.

Even in our reasonably short jaunt across the Solent it is evident that the Grand Sturdy 500 is a marvellous boat to live with. Yes it lacks useable outdoor space and the dowdy looks and rope necklace don’t set the heart racing, but it is steeped in charm and simply a lovely thing to spend time on.

linssen-gs500-review-bucklers-hard-credit-paul-wyeth

As a tool for refined inland progress the GS500 is an absolute gem

To get the best from this boat you need to have time on your hands, it isn’t for those that can only use it at weekends as you aren’t going to get that far unless you cruise overnight. It’s designed to be used for weeks on end at a leisurely place where you can revel in its home-from-home comfort and waft quietly between destinations, forgetting the pressures of time restrictions and weather windows.

Our test may not have shattered the common theory that Linssens are best suited to inland work but whispering off down the Medina, with another jaunt across the North Sea and Holland in its sights, the Grand Sturdy 500’s offshore capability clearly passes muster.

New Linssen Sturdy 40.0 Sedan, 8-Knot Cruiser

' src=

Linssen just introduced its new Sturdy 40.0 Sedan Intero, an upgraded version of its 40 Sedan that was named the European Power Boat of the Year in the displacement category at the Düsseldorf show three years ago.

The new Sturdy 40.0 has larger windows, a redesigned engine room, an improved helm station (with a sliding door to the port side deck), and Linssen’s “softchine prestressed” hull. Powered by the standard single 110-hp Volvo, the boat still travels at a displacement speed of 8 knots, but it also delivers a range of 500 nm.

From its yard in Maasbracht, The Netherlands, Linssen makes steel-hulled displacement yachts with recognizable silhouettes. The 40.0 is a straightforward cruiser with a low profile that is meant to cruise Europe’s coastline and interior waterways, but it would be equally at home on the Intracoastal Waterway or the Great Loop. With only 8’ 7” of air draft, it would easily slide under most bridges along the way.

The 40.0 is a two-cabin, one-head cruiser with a large, light-filled salon and an open cockpit that’s protected overhead by a long overhang from the coach roof. The wide master cabin forward has a walkaround double bed, with large hanging lockers and lots of storage. Portholes and deck hatches let in natural light and air.

The single head, with separate shower, can be accessed from the master or from the hallway. The second cabin is a bit aft with two twin beds.

linssen yacht wikipedia

The main deck, from the cockpit to the helm, is all on one level, and sliding doors aft and a large sun roof overhead, plus the enlarged side windows, admit a lot of light and fresh air.

The cockpit has a lounge and a table; it can enclosed to become an extension of the salon. An L-shaped lounge is on the port side of the salon, next to the cockpit; the helm, with a two-person bench seat, is forward, and the fully-equipped galley is to starboard. A bow thruster is standard equipment.

In its new version, the interior of the Linssen 40 emphasizes light-colored material. The wenge sole has white caulking, and the furniture has a light cherry finish and leather upholstery.

Specs.: LOA: 42’1”; Beam: 14’1”; Draft: 3’9”; Disp.: 36,376 lbs.; Fuel: 198 gals.; Water: 116 gals.; Power: 1×110-hp Volvo D3.  See the video below and read more at:  http://linssenyachts.com

Steel Motoryachts by Linssen Yachts!

A business that began life as a small boatyard in 1949 has become a market leader in the steel yacht building sector within three generations. Linssen Yachts is a byword for steel displacement yachts of superior quality and for continuous innovative product and process development. In each decade since the company was established, Linssen Yachts has been the driving force behind innovative ideas for modernizing the yacht building process. And it remains so today!

Linssen yachts are built in a series of 16 models and of course, Linssen would be delighted to build your dream yacht to your specifications. In fact, they do this every day already – in series, that is! Logicam technology enables Linssen to specify mass-produced hulls in such a way that they eventually come out at the other end as individual yachts. You will be astounded by all of the functional details, things that go to make life on board a joyful experience. Thanks to their unusual chine-type hull, these boats are highly stable and their new shape below the water line combined with the shape of the keel and the rudder, and the rudder balance means that they are easy to pilot in reverse, even counter to the propeller’s direction of rotation.

The Linssen boatyard is an impressive complex with a surface area of more than 484,000 square feet. Production is divided between two locations (Maasbracht and Echt). All in all, a very impressive process that you can hardly do justice to here on paper. We have had the chance to inspect Linssen Yachts while working at European Boat Shows over the last 10+ years, and to visit the Linssen Yard 8 times. Linssen Yachts and the yard are very impressive to say the least, so much so, we bought a used Dutch Sturdy 320 Linssen Yacht for our own use, and now own a 2020 demo Linssen Grand Sturdy 35.0 Sedan! With our assistance your new Linssen Yacht will be every bit as unique as you are. You can make it just as exclusive and special as you like.

Linssen Yachts now builds 16 models from 30′ to 50′.

Charter yachts

Self drive boating holiday.

Hiring a Linssen motor yacht at one of the Linssen Boating Holidays® partners is a great way to start your boating adventure. Even if you have never been on a motor yacht before, you needn’t worry. The steel Linssen yachts, are ‘slow cruising’ displacement yachts. The charter-partner will instruct you how to handle your Linssen yacht and how the systems on board work. If you are unsure or doubt about your experience, a short lesson can be arranged.

With a comfortable cruising speed of around 6-8 knots or 11-15 km/h (depending on the yacht you choose), live goes by very slowly. You have time to enjoy the scenery, culture and surrounding from a position you have never seen: from the water.

linssen yacht wikipedia

What type of boat do I need?

The type of Linssen boat that that you can charter depends on the availability at the charter partner in a specific region. The boats they have come in different lengths and beams. The Linssen yachts are from 30 – 50 feet, or 9,70 x 16 meters. A bigger yacht will have more cabins (more sleeping berths) and will often have more living space and technical equipment on board.

AC or SEDAN?

Generally speaking, the yachts can be divided into two types: the AC yacht and the SEDAN yacht. The photograph and accompanying layouts below show two identical Linssen yachts, in terms of length. The yacht on the left is an AC type and the one on the right is a SEDAN. This example is for a yacht in the 40-45ft (13-14 m) segment and has three cabins (AC) or two cabins (Sedan). The Linssen 30 ft (10 m) and 35 ft (11 m) segment yachts have two (AC) and one (Sedan) cabin.

2. Second guest cabin* to port; toilet and shower to starboard. The toilet can be reached from the forward cabin and, for guests, from the corridor.

3. Saloon with the galley in the forward part to starboard and the dinette to port. Behind it is the seating area with a spacious bench seat and table to starboard and a large cupboard unit to port.

4. Aft cabin with large double bed, toilet and separate shower*. A lot of cupboard and storage space as well.

The captain stands outside – on top of the aft deck – to steer, protected against the weather by a folding roof or bimini*

You have excellent visibility of what is going on around you from the high aft deck. The excellent visibility makes manoeuvring especially easy.

To go inside, you go down the steps from the raised aft deck.

LBH uitleg layouts 40 sedan

3. Saloon with the helmsman’s position from where the yacht is steered in the forward part to starboard. The dinette is to port. Behind it is the seating area with a spacious bench seat and table to starboard and a spacious galley to port.

4. The Sedan section, also known as open cockpit. With a large bench seat, table and large hatch under the cockpit with a lot of storage space.

The captain stands inside to steer.

When steering inside, you are somewhat lower and closer to the water.

You can easily walk inside through the large outward-opening double teak doors from the large open cockpit, all on the same level. Even if you are steering inside you have excellent contact with family and/or friends sitting on the bench seats behind you in the open cockpit.

Living on the water means that you are completely free to go and stop where you like. However, you have to take account of a number of practical matters when underway:

Your Linssen yacht is provided with a water tank (between 220 and 660 litres, depending on the model). You use this water for washing yourself and the dishes, flushing the toilet and showering. At home, we use an average of about 120 litres of water per person per day. So you will have to be somewhat more economical when on board your yacht. If you have four people on board, you will quickly get through between 100 and 200 litres of water a day. It is therefore essential to always check the tank in the marinas you call in at and if necessary top it up.

Just like your car, your yacht also needs fuel, which is always standard diesel. The tank contains an average of between 240 and 840 litres of diesel (again, depending on the model). Your boat is fitted with particularly fuel-efficient marine diesel engines. A few comparisons:

A 9-metre Linssen yacht with a 55 HP engine consumes about 3-4 litres per hour at a cruising speed of 5.5 knots (10 km/hour) and can travel about 300 nautical miles (600 km) on a 240 litre tank. A 13-metre Linssen yacht with a 150 HP engine consumes about 6-7 litres per hour at a cruising speed of 7 knots (13 km/hour) and can travel about 800 nautical miles (1,450 km) on a 820 litre tank. You will therefore consume about 200 litres of fuel during a week-long charter trip in which you travel about 5 hours a day.

Electricity supply, 12 V, 230 V

A motor yacht has multiple power supplies on board. In general, a 12 V supply will be used for lighting and other small consumers. This electricity is produced by the batteries of the on-board power system which are charged by the engine’s dynamo, just like your car.

There are also 230 V power sockets (on most yachts*). You can use them, for example, to connect a coffee machine or charge your mobile device or laptop.

This all sounds very complicated, but you will hardly notice it in practice. The systems have been designed to switch on and off automatically as required.

This is a particularly impressive process, which cannot be properly explained on paper. You really have to see it to appreciate it. If you are interested in a Linssen yacht and are visiting the boatyard, one of our staff will be pleased to show you our production line. Product development

It starts with the design stage in which the designer is not just looking at the aesthetics but from the outset is considering the construction aspect and what is technically feasible and what is not. Next follows the engineering in which construction, technology and design are coordinated by means of advanced 3D CAD/CAM computer programs. Retaining, further developing and perfecting tried and tested technologies. Selecting, testing and integrating new technologies. Two basic principles which are the thread that runs through our company policy. At Linssen Yachts, product development is based on long-term strategies and clear objectives. So it’s hardly surprising that over the years, Linssen has set significant trends time and again. Linssen Yachts in Maasbracht has a motivated team of qualified experts working at their drawing boards and computer screens. Their combined knowledge of all aspects of the complex trade of yacht building and water sports is a driving factor behind the success of the Linssen brand. The result: Innovative yachts from which skippers often derive decades of pleasure.

It starts with the design stage in which the designer is not just looking at the aesthetics but is considering from the outset the construction aspect and what is and what is not technically feasible. The engineering then follows in which construction, technology and design are coordinated by means of special computer programs. All the details are fully worked out digitally before the data is sent to the hull construction department. There, all the components are cut out with great precision by CNC laser cutters and coded.

Shot blasting

Once the steel hull has been constructed it should be completely blast cleaned. This is the only correct method for blasting all the critical points -- for example, weld seams, grinding seams, angles, indentations and edges – and ultimately obtaining a completely clean, grease-free and fresh hull!

The Linssen spray booths have been positioned so that freshly blast cleaned hulls can be transported under cover to the spray booth. One spectacular detail of Linssen Yachts‘ new preservation halls is the underfloor heating system. An unimaginably long heating circuit has been laid involving a total of almost 3 km of heating lines in a mirror-smooth concrete floor 20 cm thick! The secret behind the Linssen Yachts application has always been the fact that throughout the entire coating process, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the hulls are kept warmer than the ambient air to prevent condensation from forming. Whenever coats of paint are applied to a hull which is colder than the ambient air the inevitable formation of condensation is likely to cause problems.

Furniture factory

Our interior construction department has been based in Echt, only a few kilometres from the boatyard in Maasbracht. There, a complete interior is produced for each individual yacht. Thanks to a sophisticated process, the various interior and exterior parts ‘run’ through the new halls and are finally transported to Maasbracht as ready-made modules.

The unique yacht of your dreams built in series!

LOGICAM® is a flow production system in which the yachts currently under construction – after the steel assembly and preservation stages – progress through the production hall to the next phase of construction in cycles lasting a certain number of days. To put it simply, the discipline doesn’t go to the boat, the boat goes to the discipline. LOGICAM® is a groundbreaking Linssen innovation, which not only relates to the efficient construction process but also definitely produces consistent product quality and a high standard of finish. Any optional components chosen by the owner are not improvised on the spot but are integrated into the basic design at the development stage. With this system, Linssen Yachts has developed production technology which is unique in the yacht building industry.

Engine room / Modules

Convenience and transparency are of great importance in terms of the installation of the technical equipment in the engine room. And we’re not just talking about the engine. This is where many components, pumps and installations do their work inconspicuously but reliably to ensure that each instrument, each electrical wall socket, each tap and each heating unit can operate faultlessly in each compartment. Here too, modular construction forms the basis of the overall concept. The easy-to-understand structure of all the systems makes maintenance a simple and efficient process. This not only makes it possible for service engineers to work in accordance with standard procedures, it also means that the owner doesn't have to be a fully qualified engineer to carry out simple routine checks. The FIS® (Floor Integrated System®) is a revolutionary Linssen innovation which ensures that the – prefabricated – cable trees and pipes can be installed and maintained safely and conveniently while remaining easily accessible.

Installing the interiors

Having arrived from the interior module factory, the interior modules are installed on the Logicam production lines. The first step is to lay the floors and fit the walls. The forward cabin, including toilet and shower and (in the case of 40 ft yachts and above) the guest cabin, are then installed. The next step in the production process is to install the aft cabin with toilet and (where fitted) shower (or the open cockpit) and this is finally followed by the centre section - the saloon, pantry and dinette.

All the cabling, pipes and drains that run under the floors through the FIS system emerge 'through' the floors, walls and ceilings in the right place to the outside to be actually connected up at a later stage in the finishing process. The last step is to give the complete interior several coats of lacquer, to provide the cherrywood with optimum protection.

The finishing process

The interior is now complete and the finishing phase begins. Most of the technical systems, i.e. equipment including the heating system, batteries, fuses, instruments, etc., are housed in the engine room, but some are also installed under the floors and behind the walls. Connecting all these components wherever they are in the boat is part of the finishing process. They include the drain from the toilet and shower, the water supply for the pantry, electricity to all the power sockets and lighting system and much more besides. The helmsman's position is also fitted out at this point. The cable harness with the labelled wiring for all the instruments is ready to be installed. All the navigation instruments, displays, switches, meters and handles are connected up.

The windows, having been made to exact dimensions outside the yacht, are mounted in the rebates. After being thoroughly inspected at the last workstation, the yacht is reported to be complete and is transported outside for the launch.

Commissioning, final check and test sailing

Our Travellift lowers your new Linssen into the water, after which the official commissioning process takes place. The engine or engines are adjusted and calibrated; the navigation equipment, depth gauge, GPS, etc. are adjusted and all the technical components are checked during a test sailing.

Your yacht is given a final thorough check before you come on board. The yacht is inspected in minute detail and everything is tested again. It is then thoroughly washed on the outside and the interior thoroughly cleaned and your dream yacht is ready to be handed over.

This handover of a new or pre-owned Linssen yacht always takes a full day, so that every detail can be explained, every question answered and every test completed – you can rely on us for that! We’ll never just thrust the keys of your new yacht into your hand without providing you with comprehensive information!
