This unique and amazing table is capable of automatically doubling its seating capacity whilst remaining truly circular in the process. Expansion leaves are stored within the table and are self positioning as the table changes from one mode and appearance to an entirely different one. Operation, which can either be manual or electronic, is simple and extremely quick.

Yacht Ilona Capstan Transforming Table

David Fletcher, from DB Fletcher Design , came up with a concept inspired by Robert Jupe, who in 1835 designed several radial dining tables. However, Fletcher’s Yacht Ilona Capstan transforming table represents an optimized version, in contrast to the ones made by Jupe. According to the designer, “Jupe’s tables could not store their own expansion leaves, were not always truly round, and were slow and laborious to operate.”

The upper layer, which is visible when the table is in compact mode, is made from 6 arrow-like leaves. When expanding the table, two other layers get lifted to the surface. As mentioned on the DB Fletcher Web site, “Its intricacy changes, according to the species of timber used, as the table metamorphoses from small to large, and vice versa.” In order to expand the table, users only have to unscrew a button and rotate the upper layer to the right. Screwing the button back to its initial position is necessary, to make sure that the layers do not move while using the table. In compact mode, the table offers enough space for 6 persons. While expanded, it can easily accommodate 12 persons.

Despite looking simple, there is a lot of work in creating such a table. Because of this fact, there is a limited number of Yacht Ilona Capstan tables manufactured every year. These pieces of furniture are made from solid wood, as well as aluminum and stainless steel. The weight of 220 kilos confirms the use of such heavy materials.

The entire table is shipped in one package. As people may find assembling this table a bit difficult, an expert installation technician from UK needs to be present after receiving the package, in order to put the pieces together. Yacht Ilona Capstan tables seem to be made with exclusivity in mind, as there are no showrooms for these products, nor are there any dealers. Customers order their transforming tables directly on the Web site of the design company.

​How do you get from four rooms to one Polyvalent (multi-purpose) room?

In your home, you probably have a kitchen, living room, dining room and family room. In your boat, you probably have one space that serves all four functions. See the video here .

The problem is, you have one table that has to serve all of these different priorities at different times and often, doesn’t perform any of them well.

The typical solution is a Hi-Lo table, or a choice of a cocktail table or dining table…

A more elegant solution…

Is there a simple solution? Yes there is. A convertible table. I don’t mean one that goes up and down to make a berth, but rather a unique, custom designed table…

What will it do?

Go down to make a berth.

Act as a full sized dining table whose edge is above the seating area so it acts like a real table

It also goes down part way to make a coffee table or serving table and then has a mechanism to allow it to move or fold up to be smaller so there’s complete walk around and leg room all around it. (Depending on the boat, maybe it makes into two distinct, independent tables–as shown in most of these pictures.)

It is operated electrically or with pneumatic pedestals.

Here are some proven solutions.

1. The Jeanneau 54 offers an elegant pair of tables on an electric lift. Each goes up and down independently, and the leaves fold over to make them more like a coffee table and easier to get around. We have a variety of manual and electric pedestals and a source for table tops in any wood or configuration. We can do this.Left, all open for a big table that can also be lowered to make a berth. Center: The aft leaf folds on top of the forward leaf to create a coffee table sized table. Left behind on the pedestal (Just on the edge of the picture) is a small base left over as an additional small table–easy to get around. Right: the full size table set up for business. Note both pedestals are electric and controlled from a control panel to the right. See the video resource to see it in operation.

2. Here’s my favorite solution. 2 pedestals (electric or pneumatic). 2 tables (custom made). Each has four triangular leaves. When the leaves are folded in you have a cocktail sized table with walk around space between the couch and table. Lower them to your favorite height for lounging and you can still get around. rotate the corners to the center, open the leaves and you have two square tables that make a full sized table–up, or a platform for an inflatable cushion to make a bed–down.  See the video here .

NOTE: These are pictures of tables on a different vessel. All components are off the shelf items– available from regional vendors that we use. Actually this concept is used in many restaurants as a space saving, flexible solution for diners (They don’t use the up-down feature, however.)

Don’t neglect the cockpit…

As a bonus, on catamarans–you can do something similar with the cockpit table and it too can be a high low making into a berth–in fact, our clients who have incorporated this feature report that they spend many of their evenings, sometimes overnight, snuggled up in this nest they create in the cockpit!

With the cockpit being so open to the main saloon, you end up with the feeling of one huge space with multiple functions.

All-in-One Transforming Capstan Table

Fans of the Fletcher Capstan Table might not have the money (or space) to afford a full-sized dining table, and may find this more recent variant from DB Fletcher even more versatile. This transforming table can be raised or lowered, and unlike its larger cousin the various leaves can be added or subtracted as desired, giving it versatility between sizing extremes. A simple assisted hydraulic system sits inside the steel core, allowing for manual lifting and dropping of the table top, while a likewise-simple lock-and-release mechanism lets each modular extension operate independently.

As opposed to the larger original version, this one “was designed to address the need for a metamorphosing table for smaller dining areas, patios, balconies or yacht decks. It is made to an exacting marine specification, allowing permanent siting in an exposed position if needs be.””

Scott Rumschlag Builds Amazing Wooden Expanding Table

You may have seen different kinds of expanding table designs before, but this wooden expanding table definitely takes the cake for its complex mechanism. This round table by YouTuber [Scott Rumschlag] is inspired by the famous Fletcher Capstan Table designed by British furniture maker Fletcher Burwell-Taylor.

Its tabletop consists of three parts that extend outwards, increasing the size of the table. When expanded, a star shaped configuration is formed in center of the table. The table can expand its diameter merely by rotating the top.

Scott has innovatively managed to maintain amalgam of both carpentry and genius engineering, which helps tabletop in expansion. This wooden expanding table is a great build that seems perfect for modern apartments where modular furniture is a necessity.

It appears as an 8-pointed star in the center only that drops down and pops up as the sections seperate and go back together around the perimeter of the table as it is spun. It doesnot look like the Oscarde la Renta tables in Century House Furniture Collection. Carpentry...wmv I hope this link comes through. Any help provided would be so appreciated. Thanks. Do you like this one? Maybe it's just me, but I have a feeling that who ever designed and engineered that first one, is not going to give the plans away for free. I could be wrong however. Some things found on "Yachts" money can't buy, or should be able to anyway! That one belongs right up there with the 7 Wonders of Wood Working in my book. I don't know what the other 6 are, but nothing I ever made or will made the list! So I don't know where you go from here fpor plans but I'll still try to find out.:thumbsup: bill here's the other 1 of 2 from deanopain:

I doubt you are going to be able to find plans or hardware for it anywhere. I searched some for their tables and their basic expanding table goes for $14,000 and the one in the video above goes for $32,000. Good luck. Edit: sorry, those prices were in British Pounds. That is an awesome read for any woodworker. The demonstration of applied thought to making a project come together is beyond belief. I encourage all of you to take the time to read this, it will inspire you to think outside the traditional box on a lot of projects.

The construction of that table was truly done by a superior craftsman. The person who had the imagination to make the original design was even more amazing. G  

A beautiful table indeed! I went to the gentleman’s website, and noticed that some of the articles were originally posted on The Oak Factory website….a very familiar name from the past. I used to visit there often back in the mid 90’s. Is it still around? I couldn't find it on Google. A little bit of insider knowledge----I just ended a four year stint as a Furniture Designer (the entire interior on a yacht is called furniture) at a prestigious yacht maker, and fancy mechanical Main Salon tables are the norm. They are used as a sales device at the boat shows in Florida and Monaco….. and in many cases money is no object. But you are very unlikely to see one on the web other than pictures of it in action. Designers where I worked are required to sign very strict non disclosure agreements. It’s too bad though, because none of the ones we built are patented, and they are never built twice. Gazillionairs do not like other peoples leftovers. They are also very expensive to build..... I have a few links to yacht stuff I designed on a brand new woodworking page on my website. There are also free plans for a plywood toilet (of all things), and a tutorial for modeling a 3D door as well (somewhat advanced). The plans need a little tweeking, so feedback would be welcome.:yes: Mark The Open Design Project

OpenDesignDude, your website doesn't show up properly in Firefox 3.0.14. All your frames are overlapping and it's very difficult to read. Also, none of your embedded links seem to actually work. (IE the link to your "Yacht Design Page" doesn't actually link to anything, it's just blue text.)

The page for the complete plans on how to build the Capstan table is no longer valid, I was wondering if anyone still had the info and could forward it to me. I have spent the whole day looking without any success. Thanks
