2021 Bayliner Element M15

  • By Alan Jones
  • Updated: July 30, 2021

Bayliner Element M15 cruising at sunset

The evolution of Bayliner’s Element Series continues with the introduction of the M15, a new entry-level deck boat that features a more open cockpit design and upgraded upholstery, with a starting price below $14,000 including a trailer. Despite being a foot shorter and nearly a foot narrower than the E16—the original Element—the M15 feels larger because it does away with the space-eating rear playpen and fiberglass dividers between seating areas. Moving the helm seat to the aft bench also creates more usable space in the cockpit. A major evolution is the integrated swim platform, which gives the boat a more graceful sheerline and creates a one-level back porch that’s perfect for key-off lounging facing rearward. Bring on that sunset!

The standard engine is a three-cylinder Mercury FourStroke 40 EFI, but upgrading to the four-cylinder Mercury FourStroke 50 EFI we ran during our test is a recommended option ($775) that pushed its top speed to a respectable 31.3 mph. The M15′s M-hull gives it admirable side-to-side stability, with 17 degrees of deadrise at the stern to help mitigate the chop. The hull also provides lots of lift, which helped it get on plane in 5.7 seconds and also allowed it to stay on plane at only 14.5 mph. The angular outer sponsons push back during hard turns to reduce inward lean.

Interior and Accessories

The few available options are bundled to make choosing a setup easy. Buyers could select the bare-bones E Package, but they should fork over an extra $1,050 to upgrade to the EX Package, which includes the choice of black or red hull color, a Jensen 120-watt AM/FM MP3 stereo, a 500 gph bilge pump, a mooring cover, and a Bimini top with boot. For another $525, the EXL Package builds on the EX Package by adding SeaDek padding to the cockpit sole and swim platform, a digital depth finder, and a bow filler cushion to create a sunning platform.

Bayliner Boats’ newest entry-level model accomplishes the mission of delivering great value and fun in an easily trailerable package.

The Heritage 15

Which heritage 15  is best for you.

  • Heritage 15 Classic
  • Heritage 15 Carbon
  • Heritage 15 Guide Boat
“It’s one of my all time treasured possessions. Every time I look at it, I feel good.” – Bill Parsons, former president of Palmer Johnson Yachts

Reminiscent of the romantic rowing craft which graced the waters at the turn of the century, the Heritage 15 is as much a joy to look at as it is to row. All of our rowboats are crafted using hand-laid fiberglass.

This row boat will probably stay in your family for generations. Its timeless lapstrake hull, blue teak swooping sheer and wineglass stern give her classic good looks. At first, one just wants to look at it and imagine the quiet streams and golden sunsets where a Heritage belongs.

15 foot yacht

What are her best features?

Versatility to fit your lifestyle. Take a partner to row, or pile in the kids.

Row hard or just drift. Clamp on a two-horsepower motor. Pack a lunch and go exploring. Strap it on the car for summer vacation. There are even great sailing options.

Take her anywhere. Really! Just ask the man who rowed across the Baltic Sea. Or the fellow who rowed the entire coast of Texas.

The possibilities are endless…

Built with a wider hull than rowing shells, the Heritage is terrifically stable. This allows the rower to stand while launching or even at sea. One can even stand and cast a fishing pole (pictured below). The Heritage also has a prominent bow enabling it to charge into the roughest seas. The deep-tracking keel and high stern will thrill you as you surf down-sea. This is the first truly “ocean-capable” sliding-seat rowing craft.

Designer Bill Larson has rowed in 5-foot seas, reporting not only was she dry, but she was fast and stable. The low profile sides prevents nasty windage issues, yet she is so buoyant she “bobs like a cork” in the rough stuff. There are built in passenger seats both in the bow and the stern. All Heritage’s come standard with a sliding seat monorail and a fixed seat bench, so you may row sliding seat for aerobic exercise, or traditional fixed seat just for the joy of it.

Newest to our Heritage line is the Guideboat. It is built on the same acclaimed hull shape and design as the Classic Heritage, but is lighter and is more economical. It is a single skin boat, which means it is made from a hull mold only, similar to a canoe. The inside has a gel coat finish. The Guideboat is available in the 12, 15, and 18 sizes. The 15 and 18 can be ordered as a Single or Double, or both! This economical, lightweight 15 is an incredable little boat, having undergone many generations to achieve the right balance of weight and strength at an affordable price. The Heritage hull is famous for its stability. One can even stand in it and cast a fishing pole. Most people looking for a rowing skiff do not need it to be as tippy as an 2′ wide shell.

15 foot yacht

Speed wise, the Heritage is certainly the fastest traditional design that can claim the ability to stand in. How fast is that? Between 25 and 30 feet per stroke. It’s inspiring. A recent GPS test found the 15 foot classic to be 7.9 knots top end and 7.2 knots sustained. Whether in a 15 or an 18, the Guideboat can be purchased as a single or a double. If you order the boat as a single, it can later be retrofitted into a double by ordering the seeking rowing station and adding the mounting brackets. The benches are wood for a touch of tradition without overwhelming maintenance. The sliding seat monorail sets on top of the bench just as in the Classic. One may remove the slider (or order it without a slide) to row in the traditional fixed seat way. For and aft are built in passenger seats, which function as the flotation compartments as well. The rigger design is fixed in the outboard position as in a shell. Top of the line Concept II oarlocks are standard.

With the rowing stations out, this boat can be fairly easily lifted overhead and carried to and from the car by an average man. Or it can be slid onto roof racks (never needing to lift but one end). The rowing stations can be folded (from a “t: shape to an “I” shape) to store or carry.

  • Drop-in Unit row station
  • Ideal for car-topping
  • Black or white rails
  • Sold as single but converts to a double by adding options
  • Built-in passenger seats bow and stern
  • Approx. Weight unrigged aprox 70 lbs
  • Approx. Weight for rig Add 16 lbs

Simplicity…

Thanks to our patented folding rigger, set up and launching is a breeze. Slide your Heritage off the dock, push off, swing out the rigger and go… it’s that simple. Little River is the only builder to offer the folding rigger system. The rigger folds in to act as a handle as you sit down. Another plus: it has a built in safety feature where the rigger will collapse should you accidentally hit something, with no damage to the oars or boat. In the Heritage, the seat is much higher than that of a shell so it is much more comfortable to sit in than shells. If you like, you can row out to your favorite quiet spot and just take in the beauty.

The Heritage 15 Choices

The Heritage 15 Classic can be ordered as a Single, or as a Double. If you get the double, it comes standard with the ability to convert it into a balanced single.

Additionally, you may choose three different Construction methods: the Classic, which we have been discussing on this page, or the ultralight classic carbon hull, or the new economical Guideboat. To see all the different construction methods at a glance click here.

The Other Heritage Models:

The Heritage comes in three sizes, the Heritage 12, the Heritage 15 and the Heritage 18. The Heritage 15 and the Heritage 18 can be rigged to row as a single or a double station. The difference is that the Heritage 15 is a lighter launch, and thus easier to handle, while the Heritage 18 has a longer water line, and thus a better rowing double. Which row boat is best for you? If you will be rowing mostly as a single, the 15 is probably best. If you plan to row mostly as a double (and occasionally as a single) then the 18 is your best bet. The Heritage 12 comes as a single only, but can carry passengers. It is a good choice where space is a concern, for to use as a tender to a big boat. Also, ladies tend to prefer it’s smaller size.

10 Best Small Sailboats (Under 20 Feet)

Best Small Sailboats Under 20 Feet | Life of Sailing

Last Updated by

Daniel Wade

December 28, 2023

Compact, easy to trailer, simple to rig, easy to maintain and manage, and affordable, the best small boats all have one thing in common: they offer loads of fun while out there on the water.

So whether you're on a budget or just looking for something that can offer ultimate daytime rides without compromising on safety, aesthetic sensibilities, alternate propulsion, and speed, the best small sailboats under 20 feet should be the only way to go.

Let's be brutally honest here; not everyone needs a 30-foot sailboat to go sailing. They come with lots of features such as electronics, entertainment, refrigeration, bunks, a galley, and even a head. But do you really need all these features to go sailing? We don't think so.

All you need to go sailing is a hull, a mast, rudder, and, of course, a sail. And whether you refer to them as daysailers, trailerable sailboats , a weekender sailboat, or pocket cruisers, there's no better way to enjoy the thrills of coastal sailing than on small sailboats.

There are a wide range of small boats measuring less than 20 feet available in the market. These are hot products in the market given that they offer immense thrills out on the sea without the commitment required to cruise on a 30-footer. A small sailboat will not only give you the feel of every breeze but will also give you the chance to instantly sense every change in trim.

In this article, we'll highlight 10 best small sailboats under 20 feet . Most models in this list are time-tested, easy to rig, simple to sail, extremely fun, and perfect either for solo sailing or for sailing with friends and family. So if you've been looking for a list of some of the best small sailboats , you've come to the right place.

So without further ado, let's roll on.

Table of contents

{{boat-info="/boats/hunter-15"}}

The Marlow-Hunter 15 is not only easy to own since it's one of the most affordable small sailboats but also lots of fun to sail. This is a safe and versatile sailboat for everyone. Whether you're sailing with your family or as a greenhorn, you'll love the Hunter 15 thanks to its raised boom, high freeboard, and sturdy FRP construction.

With high sides, a comfortable wide beam, a contoured self-bailing cockpit, and fiberglass construction, the Hunter 15 is certainly designed with the novice sailor in mind. This is why you can do a lot with this boat without falling out, breaking it, or capsizing. Its contoured self-baiting cockpit will enable you to find a fast exit while its wide beam will keep it steady and stable no matter what jibes or weight shifts happen along the way.

This is a small sailboat that can hold up to four people. It's designed to give you a confident feeling and peace of mind even when sailing with kids. It's easy to trailer, easy to rig, and easy to launch. With a price tag of about $10k, the Hunter 15 is a fun, affordable, and versatile boat that is perfect for both seasoned sailors and novices. It's a low-maintenance sailboat that can be great for teaching kids a thing or two about sailing.

Catalina 16.5

{{boat-info="/boats/catalina-16-5"}}

Catalina Yachts are synonymous with bigger boats but they have some great and smaller boats too such as Catalina 16.5. This is one of the best small sailboats that are ideal for family outings given that it has a big and roomy cockpit, as well as a large storage locker. Designed with a hand-laminated fiberglass sloop, the Catalina 16.5 is versatile and is available in two designs: the centerboard model and the keel model.

The centerboard model is designed with a powerful sailplane that remains balanced as a result of the fiberglass centerboard, the stable hull form, and the rudder. It also comes with a tiller extension, adjustable hiking straps, and adjustable overhaul. It's important to note that these are standard equipment in the two models.

As far as the keel model is concerned, this is designed with a high aspect keel as the cast lead and is attached with stainless steel keel bolts, which makes this model perfect for mooring or docking whenever it's not in use. In essence, the centerboard model is perfect if you'll store it in a trailer while the keel model can remain at the dock.

All in all, the Catalina 16.5 is one of the best small sailboats that you can get your hands on for as low as $10,000. This is certainly a great example of exactly what a daysailer should be.

{{boat-info="/boats/hobie-16"}}

There's no list of small, trailerable, and fun sailboats that can be complete without the inclusion of the classic Hobie 16. This is a durable design that has been around and diligently graced various waters across the globe since its debut way back in 1969 in Southern California. In addition to being durable, the Hobie 16 is trailerable, great for speed, weighs only 320 pounds, great for four people, and more importantly, offers absolute fun.

With a remarkable figure of over 100,000 launched since its debut, it's easy to see that the Hobie 16 is highly popular. Part of this popularity comes from its asymmetric fiberglass-and-foam sandwiched hulls that include kick-up rudders. This is a great feature that allows it to sail up to the beach.

For about $12,000, the Hobie 16 will provide you with endless fun throughout the summer. It's equipped with a spinnaker, trailer, and douse kit. This is a high-speed sailboat that has a large trampoline to offer lots of space not just for your feet but also to hand off the double trapezes.

Montgomery 17

{{boat-info="/boats/montgomery-17"}}

Popularly known as the M-17, The Montgomery 17 was designed by Lyle C. Hess in conjunction with Jerry Montgomery in Ontario, California for Montgomery Boats. Designed either with keel or centerboard models, the M-17 is more stable than most boats of her size. This boat is small enough to be trailered but also capable of doing moderate offshore passages.

This small sailboat is designed with a masthead and toe rail that can fit most foresails. It also has enough space for two thanks to its cuddly cabin, which offers a sitting headroom, a portable toilet, a pair of bunks, a DC power, and optional shore, and a proper amount of storage. That's not all; you can easily raise the deck-stepped mast using a four-part tackle.

In terms of performance, the M-17 is one of the giant-killers out there. This is a small sailboat that will excel in the extremes and make its way past larger boats such as the Catalina 22. It glides along beautifully and is a dog in light air, though it won't sail against a 25-knot wind, which can be frustrating. Other than that, the Montgomery 17 is a great small sailboat that can be yours for about $14,000.

Norseboat 17.5

{{boat-info="/boats/norseboat-17-5"}}

As a versatile daysailer, Norseboat 17.5 follows a simple concept of seaworthiness and high-performance. This small sailboat perfectly combines both contemporary construction and traditional aesthetics. Imagine a sailboat that calls itself the "Swiss Army Knife of Boats!" Well, this is a boat that can sail and row equally well.

Whether you're stepping down from a larger cruiser or stepping up from a sea kayak, the unique Norseboat 17.5 is balanced, attractive, and salty. It has curvaceous wishbone gaff, it is saucy, and has a stubby bow-sprit that makes it attractive to the eyes. In addition to her beauty, the Norseboat 17.5 offers an energy-pinching challenge, is self-sufficient, and offers more than what you're used to.

This is a small, lightweight, low-maintenance sailboat that offers a ticket to both sailing and rowing adventures all at the same time. At about 400 pounds, it's very portable and highly convenient. Its mainsails may look small but you'll be surprised at how the boat is responsive to it. With a $12,500 price tag, this is a good small sailboat that offers you the versatility to either row or sail.

{{boat-info="/boats/sage-marine-sage-17"}}

If you've been looking for a pocket cruiser that inspires confidence, especially in shoal water, look no further than the Sage 17. Designed by Jerry Montgomery in 2009, the Sage 17 is stable and should heel to 10 degrees while stiffening up. And because you want to feel secure while sailing, stability is an integral feature of the Sage 17.

This is a sailboat that will remain solid and stable no matter which part of the boat you stand on. Its cabin roof and the balsa-cored carbon-fiber deck are so strong that the mast doesn't require any form of compression post. The self-draining cockpit is long enough and capable of sleeping at 6 feet 6 inches.

The Sage 17 may be expensive at $25k but is a true sea warrior that's worth look at. This is a boat that will not only serve you right but will also turn heads at the marina.

{{boat-info="/boats/laserperformance-laser-sb3"}}

Having been chosen as the overall boat of the year for 2008 by the Sailing World Magazine, the Laser SB3 is one of the coolest boats you'll ever encounter. When sailing upwind, this boat will lock into the groove while its absolute simplicity is legendary. In terms of downwind sailing, having this boat will be a dream come true while it remains incredibly stable even at extraordinary speed.

Since its debut in 2004, the Laser SB3 has surged in terms of popularity thanks to the fact that it's designed to put all the controls at your fingertips. In addition to a lightweight mast, its T- bulb keel can be hauled and launched painlessly. For about $18,000, the Laser SB3 ushers you into the world of sports sailing and what it feels to own and use a sports boat.

{{boat-info="/boats/fareast-18"}}

As a manufacturer, Fareast is a Chinese boat manufacturer that has been around for less than two decades. But even with that, the Fareast 18 remains a very capable cruiser-racer that will take your sailing to the next level. In addition to its good looks, this boat comes with a retractable keel with ballast bulb, a powerful rig, and an enclosed cabin.

Its narrow design with a closed stern may be rare in sailboats of this size, but that's not a problem for the Fareast 18. This design not only emphasizes speed but also makes it a lot easier to maintain this boat. Perfect for about 6 people, this boat punches above its weight. It's, however, designed to be rigged and launched by one person.

This is a relatively affordable boat. It's agile, safe, well-thought-out, well built, and very sporty.

{{boat-info="/boats/chuck-paine-paine-14"}}

If you're in the market looking for a small sailboat that offers contemporary performance with classic beauty, the Paine 14 should be your ideal option. Named after its famous designer, Chuck Paine, this boat is intentionally designed after the classic Herreshoff 12.5 both in terms of dimensions and features.

This is a lightweight design that brings forth modern fin keel and spade rudder, which makes it agile, stable, and faster. The Paine 14 is built using cold-molded wood or west epoxy. It has varnished gunnels and transoms to give it an old-time charm. To make it somehow modern, this boat is designed with a carbon mast and a modern way to attach sails so that it's ready to sail in minutes.

You can rest easy knowing that the Paine 14 will not only serve you well but will turn heads while out there.

{{boat-info="/boats/wd-schock-lido-14"}}

Many sailors will attest that their first sailing outing was in a Lido 14. This is a classic sailboat that has been around for over four decades and still proves to be a perfect match to modern small boats, especially for those still learning the ropes of sailing.

With seating for six people, the Lido 14 can be perfect for solo sailing , single-handed sailing, or if you're planning for shorthanded sailing. While new Lido 14 boats are no longer available, go for a functional used Lido 14 and you'll never regret this decision. It will serve you well and your kids will probably fall in love with sailing if Lido 14 becomes their main vessel during weekends or long summer holidays.

Bottom Line

There you have it; these are some of the best small sailboats you can go for. While there are endless small sailboats in the market, the above-described sailboat will serve you right and make you enjoy the wind.

Choose the perfect sailboat, invest in it, and go out there and have some good fun!

Your Guide to Choosing the Best Yacht Tender

Your Guide to Choosing the Best Yacht Tender

A yacht tender is your ticket to freedom on the water. Once you drop anchor, it’s your ride to the fun and adventure that inspired you to buy a boat in the first place. Just imagine watersports, exploring, scuba diving, snorkeling and, of course, just relaxing in the warm sun!

Here’s a quick secret — your yacht tender is the most fun boat you’ll ever own.

We think a dinghy should not only reflect the beauty and precision of a yacht but also have the power and functionality to push fun to the limit. Is there any better way to celebrate dropping anchor than a cold drink and a zoom on the dinghy? Please, let us know if you find something.

Having the right tender lets you enjoy your boating experience to the fullest. There are a few things to consider when picking the best yacht tender for you, so we made this guide to help you through the process. We’ll go over:

  • The benefits of rigid inflatable boats
  • Pricing of small yacht tenders
  • How to pick the right dinghy
  • A brief overview of our models

There are lots of yacht tender options out there, and it’s essential to find the best one for you. Whether you’re looking for the best small boat or superyacht tender, we’ll give you the information you need to find the perfect dinghy for your life on the water. Read on to learn how to pick the perfect yacht tender.

The Benefits of Rigid Inflatable Boats

Rigid inflatable tenders have become the go-to choice for boaters. Here’s the deal.

Safety is always the first priority when you’re on the water. With the ever-changing conditions of an ocean environment, you need a tender that’s prepared to handle it all. There’s a reason the United States Coast Guard, military and police use rigid inflatable boats — they’re extremely seaworthy. The United States Navy describes rigid inflatables as extremely fast and buoyant. It employs them for Navy SEAL extractions and in intense ocean conditions.

Virtually unsinkable and super tough, rigid inflatable boats are hands-down the best choice for those who desire small yacht tenders.

What Do You Mean by Rigid Inflatable Boat?

Commonly called a RIB, a rigid inflatable boat has a hard hull and inflatable tubes for sides. This construction gives rigid inflatables the best of two worlds — they have the indestructible v-hull and tracking of a hard boat and the shock absorption of an inflatable boat. They’re as hardy as they are versatile. For example, we offer Navy-tough tenders with beautiful European craftsmanship that you can’t find anywhere else.

Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat

In addition to their durability, RIBs offer many other advantages. Here are a few more reasons why RIBs represent a smart investment.

RIBs Provide Stability

In a rigid inflatable tender, there’s little risk of tipping over because the inflatable tube and hard hull combination provide excellent stability, which is great for loading and unloading your family and your toys.

Also, the inflatable tubes significantly increase a tender’s capacity rating, meaning you can safely fit more passengers and gear on a RIB than on a hard dinghy. Known as the “Safe Working Load,” or SWL, this capacity is detailed by the manufacturer. To calculate the maximum number of people who should be aboard a small vessel, multiply a vessel’s length by width and then divide the result by 15.

RIBs Demonstrate Impressive Efficiency

Inflatable dinghies are much lighter than hard tenders. Weighing less means they’re much more efficient, and you can pack in a lot more adventure with the same amount of gas. Skip the line at the fuel dock, and head straight into your day.

RIBs Have Exceptional Safety

A great benefit of having an inflatable tender is you don’t have to worry about damage to your luggage or your precious cargo. We all have all experienced that awkward misstep aboard boats. When everything and everyone is moving around in the ocean, you may have trouble not fumbling every once in a while. It’s much nicer to catch yourself on the cushioned tubes of an inflatable than on hard fiberglass — we’ve tested this one!

Inflatable Tender Benefits

When you’re going fast and having fun on the water, you don’t want to worry about safety. Knowing you’re in the safest dinghy lets you relax and focus on your adventure.

The United States Coast Guard has specific safety requirements for all recreational vessels. Adhering to these not only keeps your tender legal, but it also keeps you and your family safe. You can follow a simplified list of requirements.

It’s Easy to Use RIBs

For everyday boating operations, having an inflatable-sided dinghy is the best. You don’t have to deal with fenders or worry about all the bumps and nudges like on a hard tender.

Getting a spot at the dinghy dock often means playing bumper boats. If you have a dinghy with inflatable sides, you don’t damage other vessels, the dock, or your dinghy. Not to mention if you’re dropping someone off or tying up on your yacht, you can leave your dinghy unattended without worrying about damage to your boat.

Sometimes, it’s easier to tow your tender than it is to put it away — like if you’re changing to a nearby mooring or going to a secluded cove for the day. And unlike a hard tender, an inflatable can bounce off your yacht without damaging anything.

Anyone Can Maintain a RIB

Rigid inflatable boats need a lot less maintenance than hard tenders, partially because they’re less likely to get damaged in the first place. Inflatables don’t have fiberglass siding that can get cracks or holes, and their parts are easily replaceable. We offer replacement parts through our website and also have free online owners manuals for every model we carry.

RIBs are also much easier to keep clean than the scuff-prone fiberglass of hard tenders. The tubes are made of high-quality non-absorbent material that lets you easily wash off or wipe down your dinghy to keep it looking nice.

RIBs Are More Comfortable Than Hard Dinghies

Inflatable dinghies are bound to be more seaworthy than hard dinghies. The inflatable tubes absorb shock from wind waves and swell when you’re going fast, which gives you and your family a better ride.

Inflatable Boat Tubes

Did we mention inflatable dinghies are just more fun? The incredible stability of the inflatable sides makes climbing out of the water a lot easier. And when you’re ready to cool off, the tubing makes for the perfect diving platform. You and your family can literally bounce off the walls.

How to Pick the Right Dinghy for You

Basically, choosing the best yacht tender comes down to three things:

  • What tender your yacht can hold
  • How many people will be aboard your tender
  • How you’ll use your tender

Tender Sizing

Determining the right-sized tender for your yacht is an important decision. People sometimes go for the first inexpensive option they see, without realizing just how much time they’ll end up spending on their tender — but keep in mind, tenders are the unsung heroes of the boating world.

It depends on how you want to use your dinghy, of course, but a good rule of thumb is if you can go bigger, go bigger. You don’t want to overdo it, but people sometimes underestimate the size of the dinghy they’ll need and have to upgrade later. Leave yourself some extra leg room and you, your family and your guests, including loyal pets, will be happier in the long run.

Here’s what to consider when choosing the size of your tender.

What Size Dinghy Can Your Yacht Carry?

The size of your storage area is often a good indicator of how large your dinghy should be. If you’re not sure what size dinghy is best suited to your yacht, measure the tender storage area or contact your dealer — they will give you the specifications of your dinghy storage and a suitable range of tender sizes.

Dinghy Storage Area

Also, keep in mind what the type of storage area for a dinghy on your yacht. If you have a dedicated dinghy garage where it will be out of the way when not in use, you don’t have to worry about getting the maximum size. But if your dinghy storage is on a hydraulic swim step, keep in mind you’ll need enough room to function around the dinghy while it’s aboard.

How Many People Will Be Aboard Your Yacht Tender?

If your yacht has room for a lot of passengers, you’ll probably want a dinghy that can transport a lot of people, too. When you’re doing ship-to-shore transportation for you and your guests, you don’t want to make five trips to the dock and back. Choose a tender that can hold enough passengers and cargo.

Again, assuming you have enough room to store it, we recommend assessing your dinghy needs and then considering the next size up to leave room for any extra guests, luggage or toys you may want to bring along. Extra space not only helps you operate your dinghy more safely, but it also leaves room for comfort.

What’s the Purpose of Your Dinghy?

That’s easy — fun! Pick your pleasure.

Are you all about watersports and exploration? Water skiing and searching for secluded beaches to relax the day away or scuba diving on beautiful reefs? Or maybe you’re just looking for a stable and dry ride to shore to shop, dine and discover. Whatever it is you like to do, a proper tender gets you into the mix.

Once you decide how you want to use your dinghy, you’ll have a better idea of which one you’ll want. If you like watersports, maybe a model with a little more size and power will suit you. If you just want a comfortable, dry ride to shore, maybe you’d prefer a model that’s smaller and quiet.

By the way, kids love dinghies — it’s a fact. Inflatable dinghies are awesome for towing the kids around on inflatable water toys, and they’re also a great way to teach the young ones how to drive a boat. But be careful — you’ll be asking “permission to come aboard” before you know it.

A Step-by-Step Review of How to Pick Your Yacht Dinghy

Follow these five steps to ensure you pick your RIB correctly:

  • Determine the size of tender your boat can handle.
  • Estimate the number of passengers and how much gear you’ll carry.
  • Figure out how you want to use your tender.
  • Browse and pick your favorite model .
  • Hit the open seas.

Tender Pricing Vs. Quality

There are cheap dinghy options out there, but you often get what you pay for. A proper tender is not only a representation of your yacht but an integral part of your boating experience. The yacht may do the heavy lifting on a voyage, but the dinghy is your transportation once you’re on anchor or a mooring.

If you work hard to create a luxurious atmosphere on your yacht, you’ll want a dinghy that reflects the same attention to detail that you expect from a precision watercraft. Our tenders are all about functionality without sacrificing style. We know a quality dinghy is essential to your yacht — that’s why we don’t cut corners. We pride ourselves on using the latest technology with only the best materials and precision European craftsmanship.

Andy Barry - Owner of Silver Streak Boats has been building a reputation for building the finest aluminum boats on the west coast since 1987. Find out for yourself why our aluminum boats are among the most sought after, both new, and used.

All Welded Aluminum Boats means there are no rivets or other seals or connections that weaken overtime, create leaks, and will eventually fail. Welded aluminum boats are among some of the toughest boats out there. Probably why they have become a staple of the west coast.

Our aluminum boats require very little ongoing maintenance. No carpets to maintain, no wood to replace and clean. High quality electrical connections mean minimal effort to maintain. Outboard motors mean a simple "end of life" switch, and protect your investment.

U.S. COAST GUARD MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR RECREATIONAL BOATS

Chris Riley

This is the current up-to-date list of the U.S Coast Guard’s minimum safety requirements for recreational boats with sizes of up to 65 ft (19.8m) in size. These requirements detail what boating safety equipment must be present on board, and other necessary features that must be installed to comply with federal laws.

It’s worth noting that these are only the minimum requirements, and we recommend that you exceed them if you can. Similarly, these USCG rules are only the federal requirements. Individual states may have additions to this list, with additional equipment and operating standards require on top of these minimum requirements. Check with your local authorities to find out the specifics.

Personal Flotation Devices

For boats smaller than 16 ft (4.9m): One approved Type I, II, III or V (must be worn) PFD for each person on board or being towed on water skis, tubes, etc.

For boats sized between than 16 ft and 65.6 ft (20m) : One approved Type I, II or III PFD for each person on board or being towed on water skis, etc.; and one throwable Type IV device. ( A type V PFD may be used in lieu of any wearable PFD if approved for the activity in which the boat is being used. A TYPE V HYBRID MUST be worn to be legal.)

Note: Check state laws for PFD wearing requirements for children and for certain water craft and sports. Federal Regulations mandate that states without child life jacket laws require that youths under 13 wear an approved PFD whenever a recreational boat is underway, unless below decks or in a closed cabin. States with existing regulations are not required to alter their status. Make sure you check your state regulations before getting underway with children onboard.

Bells and Whistles

For all boats smaller than 65.6 ft (20m): Every vessel less than 65.6 ft. (20 meters) in length must carry an efficient sound producing device.

For boats larger than 65.6 ft: On Federally controlled waters, every vessel 65.6 ft. (20 meters) or larger in length must carry a whistle and a bell. They must be audible for 1 nautical mile.

Visual Distress Signals

These visual distress signal requirements only apply for coastal waters, the Great Lakes and U.S. owned boats on the high seas.

For boats smaller than 16 ft (4.9m): They are required to carry approved visual distress signals for night-time use.

For boats above 16 ft but no greater than 65.6 ft: They must carry approved visual distress signals for both daytime and night-time use.

Fire Extinguishers

For boats up to 26 ft (7.9m): One B-I type approved hand portable fire extinguisher . (Not required on outboard motorboats less than 26 ft in length if the construction of the motorboat is such that it does not permit the entrapment of explosive or flammable gases or vapors, and if fuel tanks are not permanently installed.)

For boats between 26 ft and 40 ft (12.2m): Two B-I type OR one B-II type approved portable fire extinguishers.

For boats between 40 ft and 65.6 ft: Three B-I type OR one B-I type PLUS one B-II type approved portable fire extinguishers are required.

Note: When a fixed fire extinguishing system is installed in machinery spaces it will replace one B-I portable fire extinguisher.

Ventilation

Coast Guard requirements on ventilation differ depending on the date your boat was manufactured. The requirements don’t change depending on the size of your vessel, just the date it was built.

Boats built on or after 8/1/1980: At least two ventilation ducts capable of efficiently ventilating every closed compartment that contains a gasoline engine and/or tank, except those having permanently installed tanks that vent outside of the boat and which contain no unprotected electrical devices.

Engine compartments containing a gasoline engine with a cranking motor are additionally required to contain power operated exhaust blowers that can be controlled from the instrument panel.

Boats built before 8/1/1980: At least two ventilation ducts fitted with cowls (or their equivalent) for the purpose of efficiently and properly ventilating the bilges of every closed engine and fuel tank compartment using gasoline as fuel or other fuels having a flashpoint of 110 degrees or less. This applies to boats constructed or decked over after April 25, 1940.

Back Fire Flame Arrestor

One approved device on each carburetor of all gasoline engines installed after April 25, 1940, except for outboard motors. This regulation applies to all recreational boats.

Navigation Rulebooks

All boats over 40 ft in length must carry an up to date copy of the ISDOT ISCG International – Inland Navigational Rules book on board.

Other Things To Consider

It’s worth noting that some states have requirements in addition to the federal requirements. Make sure that you check your state’s boating laws for additional requirements. While these aren’t always mandatory, we’ve put together a short list of things that are essential to keep aboard, no matter what size your boat is.

First Aid Kit

A first aid kit should be kept on board. Make sure it has a selection of band aids and bandages, as well as range of medication.

Keeping tools on your boat can help you out in a bind. Don’t rely on pocket knives and multi-tools; having the right tool for the job will make minor repairs much easier.

No boat should leave the marina without some kind of practical communication device. While some boaters are confident enough to leave with just a cell phone, a portable VHF radio will be of far more use in an emergency .

Emergency Fuel And Water

Spare fuel is sensible to have on board. You don’t want to get caught out with an empty fuel tank. Similarly, extra reserves of drinking water should also be kept aboard.

While most large vessels will have bilge pumps as standard, we recommend traveling with a manual bilge pump to help bail out water in the event of a power failure. A bucket will also work, but a dedicated bilge pump is a better tool for the job .

Sun Protection

A bottle of sunscreen should be kept along with your first aid kit. There will be at least one occasion when you head out on the water but forget to bring some sun protection.

An anchor and chain may help in an emergency. If you can keep yourself anchored to a single point, it will be easier for authorities to find you. An anchor with enough chain should be kept aboard all recreational boats .

In Summary: USCG’S Required Boat Safety Kit

The U.S Coast Guard’s minimum requirements are just that: the minimum requirement. We recommend that you exceed these requirements where possible. There’s nothing wrong with carrying more PFDs than you need, or equipping more visual distress signals than the rule book says.

Don’t forget, these Coast Guard boat requirements are in place to keep you safe. Besides, if you don’t follow the rules and end up having an accident, your insurance company won’t pay you a dime if you didn’t take the necessary precautions.

For peace-of-mind, we recommend that you contact your neared branch of the U.S. Coast Guard or U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary for a voluntary Vessel Safety Check.

My boat is a ranger 2000 520 VX and the name plate rating on it say it’s only rated for a 225 hp motor but per coast guard and vessel over 20 foot is unlimited. Do this law override the name plate if the boat is dated older than the law. Bass Boats now that are over 20 all have 250ho motors. Could I get some info please.

' src=

Mike on September 7, 2023

I’m not sure who says it’s “unlimited”, but generally the transom was designed for a certain amount of power/ stress which is generalized as a HP rating for an engine. Although the legal requirements may vary, one can read the nameplate and know what the craft was designed for. Sure, you could probably mount a 450 HP outboard on a boat designed for a 25 HP engine. Is that a good idea? Probably not. And although it might make a funny video, it isn’t the smartest thing to do, hence why they specified a HP rating in the first place.

At the request of the shipyard Fountaine Pajot naval architect Daniel Andrieu and designers from Pierangelo Andreani Studio initially designed the MY5 marine catamaran exclusively as a power catamaran. Cat rightfully took its place in the line of motor yachts of the shipyard between MY 4.S and MY6. Like its older brother, MY5 (formerly MY 40) also collected a number of prestigious awards, one of which is “ Best Multihull Motor Yacht ” (up to 50 ft) by 2019 Asia Boating Awards.

It is a very stable boat, which makes it attractive for both family cruising and commercial cruising. The space of all decks is thoughtfully divided into zones of work, rest, and dining. Recreation options include the opportunity to sunbathe or swim with the whole family or in the company of friends - there is enough space for everyone.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

Even the participants of the charter will comfortably accommodate on the foredeck area of 8 m², in the cockpit, saloon and flybridge of 16 m², not to mention the cabins.

It is from the bathing platform that the entrance to the cockpit opens from two sides: one is wide, through which you can load products, equipment and gear, the other is narrower.

In the cockpit there is just a huge L-shaped sofa, in front of which you can install an additional table assembled to organize a meal in the fresh air. This is convenient, since a wide entrance to the saloon opens from the cockpit, and the galley is located there immediately on the starboard side.

The cockpit also has excellent access to both engine rooms through large hatches. In the center there is a place for storing life rafts.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

In addition to stability, the catamaran is as safe as possible for both adults and children: wide side decks, stairs and flybridge are equipped with grab bars, as well as railings, ladder steps are wide and covered with non-slip material.

On the foredeck is a beautiful C-shaped sunbathing area with two full-size reclining sun loungers. In the center of this living room, you see a trapdoor that opens up to a huge locker where fenders and water sports equipment can fit.

While we are still at the foredeck, pay attention to the anchor, which can be controlled from all decks, including control panels in the saloon and on the flybridge.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

The photo above clearly shows the sunroof, which protects those who are on the flybridge from the sun. Here all passengers of the cat can freely sit. For this, comfortable sofas and poufs are provided. It is equipped with a bar, refrigerator, ice maker and barbecue.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

The control panel is placed on a small elevation, from where an almost 360-degree view opens. The helmsman can see all parts of the floats, the port side is visible through the gangway leading to the flybridge. The helm of MY5 looks like a car steering wheel, the tilt of which is adjustable. Instrument panels and equipment control are displayed here: engine diagnostics, throttle, joystick, multifunctional marine display, etc.

This is the working area of the flybridge in addition to the lounge and dining area. But there are places for family members or friends so that the helmsman does not feel lonely. A very social decision.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

The saloon is also conditionally divided into several zones. With wide sliding doors it can be combined with the cockpit, which significantly expands the usable area in addition to the 16 m² of the saloon itself.

At the starboard there is the kitchen area: you get a well-equipped galley with microwave or oven, gas hob and dishwasher. Opposite to it a large refrigerator with a freezer is installed. The seating area, or dining area, is slightly raised compared to the level of the galley. This opens up a wider view through panoramic windows around the perimeter.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

A long sofa on the port side with upholstered seats, backs and poufs and an armchair make up the living room. And together with the table, which is transformed with the help of an electric drive, upholstered furniture makes up a dining area, where 6 people can freely accommodate, and actually even more if desired.

And here is the working area of the saloon - the skipper can climb down here in bad weather. It is equipped with a full-fledged control panel, exactly the same as on the flybridge. Although, the overview of the entire catamaran is not as good - the stern is not visible.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

Let's start the description of MY5’s the cabins by saying that they are two meters high, which is unusual for a 40-foot boat. The master cabin is just a small apartment with all the amenities that start with a double queen-size island bed. The porthole opposite the bed exceeds its width and has an opening part, so that the inhabitants are provided with natural light and fresh air.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

Before getting into the main cabin, to which the entire port side is given, you have to go through the foyer, where the main electrical switchboard and a spot for a washing machine are located. The master cabin is equipped with plenty of storage space too.

A separate huge bathroom with an open shower overlooking the sea and a separate closed toilet - a layout that is almost never found on cats of this size.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

Depending on the choice of equipment, you can have MY5 with three or four cabins. In the case of a three-cabin configuration, the master cabin remains the same, and two cabins are equipped in the starboard float with a shared bathroom and a separate shower.

Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47

  • Overall length, m: 13.94
  • Width, m: 7.7
  • Draft, m: 1. 2
  • Displacement, t: 14.7
  • Water tanks, l: 2 x 350

  • Interior design: Berret-Racoupeau Design
  • Mainsail type: Fully battened
  • Jib type: Furling genoa
  • Mainsail area, m²: 77
  • Jib area, m²: 52
  • Engines, hp: 2 x 50
  • Option engines, hp: 2 x 60
  • Fuel tanks, l: 2 x 470

Sailing catamaran Tanna 47 from Fountaine Pajot replaced the Saona 47 - the new model in the old case proved to be so striking and effective that we gave it the fourth place in our rating.

Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47

To the left and to the right along the side there are entrance ladders with wide comfortable steps. Between them there can be a platform, which is an optional element. It can be used to carry a dinghy or as a bathing area.

The layout of the cockpit differs little from its predecessor. The table on the port side can accommodate 8-10 people. A couple more vacationers can be accommodated on a sunbed on the port side or on a long sofa along the transom.

Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47

A gas barbecue is very convenient on deck: you catch a fish and fry it right there, and the smells will be carried away by the wind. Of course, here you can fry not only fish, but also meat, vegetables, etc. Refrigerator and freezer are also an option, there are spots for them in the cockpit.

From the cockpit we rise to the helm station. From the control post you can enjoy an excellent overview of the entire catamaran, the nose of the left hull is slightly blocked, but you can navigate by the railing. And to see the stern, you will have to bend down, but this procedure does not cause discomfort.

The helm area and the sailing area on of Tanna 47 are separated, but the winches from are within easy reach, just behind the helm.

Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47

The panel contains all the tools, the readings of which are important for the helmsman, additional to throttle controls, chartplotter , etc. The stoppers of all three winches are brought to one point. Below is a pocket for sheets and halyards.

The sailing equipment includes the classic genoa - Fountaine Pajot did not follow the new fashion for automation here either.

On the flybridge, manipulations with the sails do not threaten anyone if at this time they are located on one of plentiful sofas or sunbeds. There is room for a table and extra seats.

In the bow there is a large compartment for the anchor chain, where fenders can also be stored. On top of the hatch of this compartment and next to it, you can place several mats and organize a natural solarium.

There are also few changes in the saloon: the usual rounding of furniture, a luxurious corner sofa, a side ottoman, a sliding table - everything is very stylish and beautifully lit. Two more large skylights have been added to the panoramic glazing of the cabin.

A small hatch above the stove acts as a hood. The galley is equipped with all kitchen utensils. There are several refrigerators in the cabin. Above one of them is a large chartplotter, and the usual place of the navigator practically does not exist in this version.

Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47

Three and four cabin versions are available. In the 3 cabin version, the master cabin is in the port float. The bed is really big, with access from three sides. In the transition to a full-fledged bathroom there is a wardrobe, shelves, work and dressing tables.

Aventura 14

The flagship of STGI Marine, the Aventura 14 motor catamaran holds the record for the number of cabins among 44-foot yachts - there are six of them. At the same time, the catamaran has seaworthy characteristics for long-distance, almost oceanic crossings at a maximum speed of 22 knots, which can be developed by the Yanmar 2x400 hp engines installed on it. At a cruising speed of 16 knots, the cruising range can reach 1,300 nautical miles.

But in the engine compartment of the yacht, you can put engines with a power of 550 hp, then the cat will develop a cruising speed of up to 18 knots, and a maximum speed of up to 27. In two tanks plus one additional tank Aventura 14 can carry 1.5 + 1.5 + 1 = whopping 4 tons of fuel.

Aventura 14

Nova Luxe took a direct part in the creation of the vessel, offering to make it as environmentally friendly as possible. To do this, they have developed a powerful solar battery specifically for this model to be placed on the flybridge. Its capacity (more than 7 kW/h) will fully serve the needs of passengers. And additional electrical equipment will reduce the use of diesel engines on sunny days.

With such high performance, passengers and crew are provided with incredible comfort to work, rest and travel, which is the hallmark of the Aventura brand .

Aventura 14

A very wide hydraulic platform at the stern accommodates several motorboats, rafts or jet skis. There is also a spacious aft garage for a pair of folding bikes or equipment for diving, hunting or fishing.

There is a table in the cockpit, which can comfortably accommodate up to 16 people on soft sofas and side benches or chairs. And since the saloon and cockpit are separated by wide sliding doors, you get a huge common space, which is also located on the same level.

Aventura 14

Huge 26 m² flybridge has its own kitchen area, which includes a grill, sink and a compact refrigerator for drinks, ice cream and fruits. The dining area, that serves also as a relaxation area or a living room, includes a large table and sofas with backs, surrounding the table from 3 sides.

Aventura 14

A huge space below the working area can be equipped with a solarium or a SPA with a jacuzzi, some place gym equipment there. Of course, with a jacuzzi filled with water, you cannot develop maximum speed, after all, the additional weight is almost 3 tons.

Aventura 14

The working area includes a control post, as well as a comfortable seat in front of it for several people, the height of which is adjustable. The height of the steering wheel itself, made in the form of an automobile steering wheel, is regulated in the same way. The instrument panel displays the performance indicators of the equipment and its control elements, as well as a high-quality marine display with a chartplotter.

Aventura 14

The spacious saloon with electric table for 12 people has a full galley with all the equipment, a large double-door refrigerator with a large freezer, a wine cabinet, a microwave, a dishwasher and a washing machine, etc.

The working area is a control post, the dashboard of which is located behind the steering wheel and to the right of it. All the controls of the Aventura 14 are placed here – the automation of the yacht’s management is so advanced, that this vessel can be considered a “smart yacht” by analogy with a “smart home”.

In general, the motorboat seems as comfortable as a compact mansion on the water can be. This feeling intensifies when you go below deck and find that you can straighten up freely, straighten your shoulders, and there is still enough space above your head.

We have already said that the cat is designed for 6 cabins if you are going to use it for charters. But if you are looking to buy an Aventura 14 catamaran for personal use, you will definitely choose the option with a master cabin and 2, 3 or 4 guest cabins, depending on the composition of the family and the number of close friends you can invite on a cruise.

The master cabin will then take up the entire float and house a huge island double bed, table, sofa, lots of closets, shelves and hidden lockers. Of course, a separate bathroom with a rain shower, toilet and a furnished hallway.

Aventura 14

Private bathrooms in guest cabins differ from the master cabin only in size.

Every time you look at the new premises of Aventura 14, you really can’t tell whether you are cruising on a 44-foot power catamaran or picking a new house for permanent residence.

Of course, when ranking the best catamarans up to 15 meters in length, we could not help but place the Excess 15 fully electric cruising sailing catamaran in second place. This is a new brand of catamarans from Beneteau-Lagoon-Janneau, focused on performance, while having all the properties of a cruising catamaran, full habitability and build quality from a major manufacturer.

Excess 15

The catamaran is equipped with electric engines instead of diesel ones. It has become a kind of research laboratory used to study the effect of installing electric motors on serial yachts.

The boat has a very spacious saloon with open access to the cockpit through wide sliding doors. In this case, one of the tables in the L-shaped galley can serve as a bar in the cockpit. This allows you to combine two zones into a single space for organizing mass entertainment with refreshments and dancing.

In the saloon, a large soft sofa goes around the table on three sides, where up to 12 people can fit. The galley is equipped with all the most necessary kitchen equipment - stove, oven, refrigerator, etc. Around the entire perimeter of the cabin there is glazing that provides excellent visibility and natural light, and opening transoms in them provide natural ventilation.

Excess 15

The cockpit also has barbecue facilities and a fridge for drinks and ice cream. In the cockpit there are sofas with backs, one of which goes around the table on both sides, the other is on the transom, and the sofa opposite the table has a spacious locker.

Drop-down seats in front of the helms and a small bimini over the helmsman's head have already become a hallmark of this range. The helms with a control panel are located in the cockpit on both sides of the catamaran. The panel contains the tools to manage the equipment, in particular, electric motors, as well as control drives for some equipment and devices such as an autopilot and a thruster.

To the left and right of the steering wheels is the engine control knob. Near the steering wheels there are manual or electric winches, at the choice of the buyer. Above the cabin and part of the cockpit there is a retractable roof - also a trademark of the line. An automatic jib is included as standard.

Excess 15

An excellent view opens up from the helmsman's seat, in particular, due to the fact that the saloon is completely glazed and through it the bow of the catamaran is perfectly visible. When maneuvering, the helmsman does not have to crouch or stretch his neck - he has a full view of both floats both in the stern and in the bow.

Naval architects and designers abandoned the idea of flybridge. But on the foredeck, you can equip a large sunbathing area using a deck and two trampolines.

You get fairly roomy, but not overbearing, guest cabins fore and aft of the same float, each with its own porthole, large double bed and bathroom.

The master cabin completely occupies one of the hulls and is divided into bedroom, living room and bath areas. In the recreation area you will find a large island double bed, two portholes, shelves. Further in the corridor there are cupboards, sofas, several tables. And in the other part there is a huge bathroom that contains everything that is required for hygiene and water procedures: a shower, a washbasin, a latrine, etc.

If desired, you can choose a package for 4 cabins or with a separate cabin for the skipper in the bow of the vessel.

Under the engines, Excess 14 goes very quietly. And when sailing, the electric catamaran can recuperate water energy.

Fountaine Pajot MY6

  • Brand: Fountain Pajot
  • Overall length, m: 14
  • Width, m: 6.6
  • Draft, m: 1.1
  • Displacement, t: 16.3
  • Air draft, m: 4.25
  • Exterior design (Architect): Andrieu Yacht Design
  • Interior design: Andreani Design
  • Engines: IPS 500 Volvo 2 x 380
  • Option engines: IPS 650 Volvo 2 x 480
  • Fuel tanks l: 2 x 1000

The MY6 (formerly MY44) motor cruising catamaran is still one of the world leaders in the 13.4 m (44 ft) double hull boat market. Shipyard Fountaine Pajot Motor Yachts received all the most prestigious awards for this cat, including “Best Multihull Power Yacht”, “European Power Boat of the Year” and “Best Passagemaker”.

Daniel Andrieu and Pierangelo Andreani once again demonstrated their engineering and creative potential, as a result of which the catamaran received excellent seaworthiness and unique living spaces.

Fountaine Pajot MY6

The yacht is stable with a good draft (1.3 m), behaves confidently even at a speed of 25 knots.

With a length of 13.6 m and a beam of 6.5 m, there are 3 or 4 double cabins with three bathrooms, a spacious cockpit, company cabins, a flybridge, a foredeck solarium and a bathing platform. At the same time, as is customary in Fountaine Pajot’s catamarans, the entire space is divided into zones - working, relaxing, dining, kitchen, etc.

In the bow there are several spacious lockers where fenders and ropes can be stored. Anchor and anchor winch can be controlled using a remote control or from one of the control stations located in the saloon and on the flybridge.

Foredeck is transformed into a great place for a vacation - a sunbathing area or an evening bar - with reclining loungers and a portable table with recesses for bottles and glasses.

We climb the flybridge stairs with railings and wide steps. Here the distribution of zones is thought out to the smallest detail. Recreation area is also a dining area, with comfortable sofas and a large built-in table, a refrigerator for drinks and ice cream.

Fountaine Pajot MY6

Another very large folding sofa - a real rookery - is located on the port side. Friends or family members resting here will brighten up the skipper's stay at the helm, which has the shape of a steering wheel.

The working area is located on the starboard side, directly opposite this huge sofa. The control post is equipped with a very comfortable wide chair.

The control panel contains all the main instruments, as well as the controls for all helmsman actions, and a multifunctional marine display. The height of the steering wheel is adjustable. Management is simplified using the joystick.

Fountaine Pajot MY6

All this splendor is protected by a sun-protection curtain on the roof, which can be moved if you want to sunbathe.

The same control post is located in the cabin. Huge portholes located around the perimeter provide natural light and excellent visibility. The portholes have opening parts that allow you to ventilate the cabin.

Fountaine Pajot MY6

Incredibly large space, although filled with excellent upholstered furniture, leaves a lot of room for free movement. At the table-transformer, 10 people can fit without constraining each other. This table, if desired, can easily be converted into a coffee, dining or even an extra bed.

Corners of the table and galley furniture are rounded for safety. The galley is located on the port side - despite its compactness, it has all the necessary kitchen equipment, including a stove, refrigerator, etc.

Fountaine Pajot MY6

As you can see in the top photo, a wide sliding door opens from the saloon to the cockpit. This combines them into a single space, which allows you to throw grand parties with a large number of guests, turning one of the galley tables into a bar counter.

In the cockpit there is a comfortable soft sofa with lockers under the seats; a portable table can be placed here.

There is also a locker with a life raft, a gas cylinder and necks for refueling the tanks. Fresh water is connected to the shower in the cockpit.

Under the cockpit hatches there is a capacious engine compartment, which provides free access to engines and other technical equipment.

Using the wide steps from the cockpit you get to stationary platform, a real personal beach spot with an area of 9 m². The cockpit floor and platform are covered with natural teak.

Fountaine Pajot MY6

Maestro version includes a master suite that is completely dedicated to the owner. Surprisingly spacious, it has a real island bed, a table, an extra sofa and wardrobes for storing clothes and other things.

A huge porthole with a "window" provides the cabin with fresh air and natural light. The height of all the rooms of the catamaran MY6 is striking - even a regular cabin’s ceiling is at least 2 meters high.

Fountaine Pajot MY6

The master cabin has a private bathroom and toilet. Two double guest cabins located in another float are also provided with separate bathrooms with toilets.

There is a choice of 4-cabin charter version, two in each float, with shared bathrooms for each couple.

Fountaine Pajot MY6

The MY6 power catamaran is designed exclusively for IPS systems and has a cruising range of up to 1,000 miles. Safety and comfort on long journeys are provided for both passengers and crew of this magnificent vessel.

How Many People Can Fit on a Boat? [Capacity Chart]

Depending on their type and features, the person capacity of boats varies greatly. However, there is a noticeable correlation between a boat’s dimensions and capacities.

As a rule of thumb, you can estimate the person capacity of a boat by multiplying its length by its width and dividing it by 15. This formula works surprisingly well on smaller recreational boats with a length of up to 25 feet.

But keep in mind, the exact capacities of a boat are always clearly stated on its USCG Capacity Plate. Make sure to obey USCG’s regulations to stay safe and legal on the water!

If you want to find out more about the average passenger capacities of different recreational boats, this post is for you.

We at PowerSportsGuide have compiled all you need to know under one roof!

How Do You Know How Many People Can Fit on a Boat?

According to federal law, every powerboat less than 20 feet in length and manufactured after August 1, 1973, is required to have a Capacity Plate.

You can typically find this plate (a.k.a. Capacity Label) around the steering area.

As the name suggests, the Capacity Plate displays the maximum capacities of the boat; which are as follows:

  • Maximum horsepower
  • Maximum persons and/or weight in pounds
  • Maximum gross load (persons, gear, equipment, and motor, all together in pounds.)

The plate should also display that the boat complies with U.S.C.G. safety standards.

Boat Person Capacity vs. Weight

When it comes to a boat’s person capacity, you shouldn’t exceed either the maximum number of passengers or the maximum person weight capacity. Boat manufacturers typically consider the average weight of one passenger to be 150 pounds to calculate the maximum capacity, but the exact weight capacity is described on the Capacity Plate.

This is very important since people don’t have consistent weights, meaning that your passengers can weigh less or even more than 150 pounds.

This is why manufacturers detail maximum persons weight capacity as well, which is intended to limit the overall weight of the passengers regardless of their number.

The maximum weight capacity of the boat shouldn’t be exceeded either. This limit refers to the maximum overall weight including passengers, gear, and motors.

Boat Person Capacity Formula

Are you wondering how can you estimate the person capacity of a smaller motorboat?

This is where this “Boat Person Capacity Formula” comes into play:

[Boat Length (ft.) x Boat Width (ft.)] ÷ 15 = Maximum Number of People

In other words, you have to multiply the length and the width of the boat in feet and divide the result by 15.

  • Boat length: 17 ft.
  • Boat width: 8 ft.
  • Person capacity: (17 x 8) / 15 = 9 people

Note that this formula is only applicable for mono-hull motorboats 25 feet or less in length.

This calculation method has been around for a very long time and appears in various respected boating publications, including the US Coast Guard Boatbuilders Handbook .

When you use this formula to calculate the passenger capacity, don’t forget that this is only a rough estimate and not an official formula that boat manufacturers are required to use!

This is because many other factors must also be taken into account including the design of the hull and top deck, engine power, and overall weight of the passengers.

Make sure that the boat can handle the overall weight of the passengers and the gear as well, so that you can stay safe and legal.

How Many People Can Fit on a Boat [by Length]?

In this section, we’ve listed the average person capacity of different boats according to their length.

Please consider these numbers as ballpark figures, as the exact passenger capacity of a boat is dependent on many factors including its beam, displacement weight, hull type, and top deck architecture.

As an example, the 21-footer bass boat can only carry 4 persons, while deck boats of the same length can carry a crew of 10-14!

What is the Person Capacity of an 8-10-foot Boat?

The smallest 8-10-foot Jon boats are typically made to be one-person boats. This is no surprise since the weight capacity of these boats is as low as 150-400 pounds.

Even if they are rated for two people, you can hardly carry an adult passenger onboard if you want to take some gear with you.

  • Lowe L1032 JON (10’): 2 persons/180 lbs.
  • Alumacraft 1032 Jon boat (10’2”): 2 persons/375 lbs.
  • Marlon SP10 Jon Boat (9.84’): 3 persons

What is the Person Capacity of a 12-foot Boat?

What is the Person Capacity of a 26+ foot Boat?

Surprisingly, boats with a length of 26 feet and above don’t feature a Capacity Plate.

According to Boat-Ed.com , there are two regulations in force regarding the Capacity Plates of recreational boats, including:

  • Federal law requires Capacity Plates on single-hull powerboats less than 20 feet in length.
  • National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) requires a plate on all boats less than 26 feet in order to be certified by NMMA.

This means recreational vessels over 26 feet typically don’t have a Capacity Plate meaning that they have no specified passenger capacity either.

The number of crew on these boats must be determined by the captain.

Since safe operation is the responsibility of the captain, he/she must always carefully determine the number of passengers.

Boat Person Capacity Chart

For your convenience, we’ve compiled the average person capacity of recreational boats into one chart.

Note that these are only ballpark figures, but most production powerboats more than likely fall into these brackets.

Disclaimer: This chart is for informational purposes only! For exact information, please check your boat’s Capacity Plate.

How Many People Can Fit on a Boat [by Type]?

How many people can go on a jon boat.

Jon boats are among the smallest recreational boats available, and are typically rated for 1-8 people depending on the make and model.

The smallest 8-10 feet Jon boats can carry only 1 person while the extra-wide 20+ feet models can hold up to 8 people.

How Many People Can Go on a Bass Boat?

Most bass boats average between 17 and 22 feet. The smallest models can only carry 2-3 persons while the longest is rated for 4-5.

The reason behind this tight person capacity is the limited number of seats on these boats.

How Many People Can Go on a Bowrider Boat?

The smallest 16-18-foot bowriders can carry 4-5 persons while their 20-25-foot brothers are rated for 7-12 persons.

Interestingly, the largest bowriders can reach a remarkable length of 35-40 feet. As one may expect, these vessels can carry a very large crew!

How Many People Can Go on a Deck Boat?

As a rule of thumb, a deck boat can carry a crew of anywhere from 5 to 14 people.

Some of the smallest deck boats are the Bayliner Element M15 (15’) and the Tahoe T16 (16’), which are rated for 5 and 6 persons, respectively.

On the other end of the spectrum, you can find the largest deck boats with 22-25-foot hulls. The person capacity of these models is approximately 10 to 15 people.

How Many People Can Go on a Center Console Boat?

The majority of mass-produced center console boats can carry 6-15 persons.

The smallest models in this breed start at 17-18 feet and can carry 6-7 persons, while the 18-footers are often rated for 9-10.

The largest towable center consoles are 23-25 feet long and can carry 12-14 persons.

Believe it or not, the length of the largest center console boats can reach an incredible 65 feet.

Although these boats can even carry more people, these vessels are considered luxury motor yachts rather than standard center console fishing boats.

  • Scout 175 Sportfish (17’5”): 6 persons
  • Stingray 173CC (17’3”): 7 persons
  • Carolina Skiff 19 Ultra Elite (18’11”): 10 persons

How Many People Can Go on a Ski/Wakeboard Boat?

There’s no question that ski and wakeboard boats are built for large groups of friends and families.

Even the smallest models with 18-20-foot hulls can carry 9-12 people while 21-22 footers are typically rated for 14-15 people.

The largest, 23-25 feet wakeboard boats can accommodate anywhere from 16 to 19 persons.

  • HeyDay WT-1 (17’11”): 9 persons
  • Axis A20 (20’): 11 persons
  • MasterCraft NXT20 (20’): 12 persons
  • Heyday WT-2DC (20’6”): 12 persons
  • Heyday WTSURF (23’1”): 17 persons
  • MasterCraft NXT24 (24’): 16 persons
  • Centurion Fi25 (25’): 17 persons

How Many People Can Go on a Cabin Cruiser Boat?

Even the smaller cabin cruisers can accommodate anywhere from 4 to 9 people, while the larger models are often “Yacht Certified.”

Conclusion – How Many People Can I Take on My Boat?

As a rule of thumb, most recreational motorboats can accommodate 1 to 20 people depending on the make and model. These vessels typically feature 8-25-feet hulls and a single or twin engine configuration.

However, the passenger capacity of any boat smaller than 26 feet is clearly stated on its Capacity Plate.

Make sure not to exceed either this capacity or the overall weight capacity of the boat to stay safe and legal.

Boats longer than 26 feet have a ‘Yacht Certification’ plate, which typically doesn’t contain any capacity information.

On these vessels, it’s the captain’s responsibility to determine a safe number of passengers.

The island fantasy was brought to life in 2011 when Walker acquired a private island in Fiji’s Great Astrolabe Reef and named it Kokomo.

Here are eight unknown facts about one of the most game-changing sailing yachts on the water.

<p>When <em>Kokomo</em> was launched, she was the second-largest sloop in the world and carried the largest set of sails made by Doyle Sails in New Zealand. The 23,971-square-foot asymmetric spinnaker is half the size of a professional football field, while the 9,688-square-foot mainsail needs a crane to lift it. Because of the gargantuan size of the sails, the designers entered a new era of spar and winch design, having to “reinvent” the deck equipment—winches, mast, boom, rigging and sails—to cope with the 31.6-ton load on the genoa sheet and 32-ton load on the main sheet clew. The 244-foot carbon mast is the largest ever made by Southern Spars.</p>

<p>Kokomo can accommodate up to 10 crew in total, but theoretically it only takes two to sail—a helm person and a sail trimmer. That sounds almost impossible given the size and complexity of yacht. But all sails are controlled by joystick on the flybridge. And when the boat is in full-on racing mode, there are control stations on both sides, providing visibility of the sails. Thanks to the hydraulics system, the mainsail can be hoisted and lowered on a wireless remote control. Of course, maneuvers like stowing the massive genoa can never be automated. That’s a job for a half-dozen good sailors.</p>

<p>The mandate issued by Walker was to create a yacht that was a “quantum leap forward” from his previous yachts, with superior sailing characteristics and guest comfort. The mast’s height is too tall to sail through the Panama or Suez Canals, which meant it would have to be designed to sail around Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope to reach the Caribbean and Mediterranean. The maiden voyage took the yacht from the New Zealand shipyard to Australia, New Caledonia, the Solomon Islands, and Fiji. It also spent time at Walker’s private island (pictured above), also named Kokomo. The vessel has since spent many years exploring the Caribbean and Med. It’s based in both regions during the respective cruising seasons, with charters available through Cecil Wright.</p>

It’s based in both regions during the respective cruising seasons, with charters available through Cecil Wright.

Make Duracraft

Category Runabout Boats

Rare 1959 Duracraft 15 ft aluminum deep-V runabout project boat. We purchased this boat back in 2008 with the intent of restoring it (see pic #1). The former owners used it as a runabout and for river fishing. We started with the trailer and rebuilt it to like new condition. Then we started on the boat. We removed the two front seats, old wood decking and transom, the motor, controls, windshield and all hardware (see pic #s 2-4). The next steps are to install transom wood, strip and refinish aluminum, re-deck, and reassemble. The windshield is still with the boat, as is the original steering wheel and all steering and throttle controls. The original motor is a 1960 Evinrude 55 HP 2-stroke. It comes with the boat and ran when we bought the boat. We planned to install a new motor, but didn’t get that far. This is a project boat and still needs a lot of work. There is no title available. You will need your own plates for the trailer. Price is firm at $960 cash. Local pickup only. Bobby @ 614-403-2591 (text is best).
